It’s Not Charity, It’s an Investment in DC
Real Estate Success Lets These Influential Women Give Back By Lisa Cain, for The Mandy & David Team For these influential women in Washington, D.C., real estate is more than a business. It’s about building a community. Thanks to their success, they are giving back to the city they call home.
Mills serves as co-president of the board of directors at DC WISE, Inc. (D.C. Women In Solidarity for Empowerment), which raises money for local nonprofits that serve women and children. “We’ve all found a lot of success in real estate,” said Valerie Cline, a loan consultant with Caliber Home Loans and treasurer of DC WISE.
DC WISE Co-Presidents, Mandy Mills and Kymber Menkiti, at last year’s annual fundraiser, hosted by Studio Theatre
“The city has been good to me and I want to be good to the city in return,” said Mandy Mills from the Mandy and David Team at Compass Real Estate. “It’s not charity; it’s an investment. We’re investing in our community.” The D.C. real estate market is hot, with prices rising for the last eight years. To give back to the city that has given them so much, these women are turning their attention, and their money, to women and children who haven’t been as fortunate.
“ W h e n we c r e a t e d DC WISE, we realized that it was time to turn it around and do something good, especially for homeless women and children,” Cline continued. “There shouldn’t be people in our city that don’t have homes.”
Valerie Cline, Caliber Home Loans
Mills also serves on the board of directors for Fair Chance, which partners with local nonprofits that serve children to improve their operations. “For me, Fair Chance is an opportunity to use my business skills to help,” said Mills. “I get to see that organization broaden its impact across the city.”

Additionally, Mills advocates for the arts, including Studio Theatre, and education. In particular, Mills supports Bancroft Elementary, the neighborhood public school that her children attend. “Schools anchor neighborhoods,” said Mills. “It’s so important to have good schools that serve everyone in the community.” Anna Kahoe, co-owner of GoodWood, the beloved U Street retail store, has designed several projects for S2 Development. She sees community building as more than just charitable giving. “In my shop, we employ two people full time,” said Kahoe. “We teach them the skills to run a business, and they teach us in return. We have lots of homegrown talent. We owe it to them and to ourselves to develop it.” Claudia Vitale, a settlement attorney with KVS Title, had the idea to start DC WISE because she kept seeing the same women in real estate at the same charity events. “It occurred to me,” she said, “that if I could bring a group of really influential women together, consolidate our efforts, we could make a bigger impact.” Indeed, DC WISE donated $100,000 to the Homeless Children’s Claudia Vitale, KVS Title Playtime Project last year, the largest single gift they’d ever received. This year, DC WISE is benefitting Crittenton Services, which serves at-risk girls in low-performing middle and high schools in the area. Pam Jones, executive director of Crittenton Services, applauded the group for their philanthropic efforts: “They set an example of how powerful collaboration is. They are wonderful role models for the girls and young women that Crittenton serves.”
Tiffani Whittaker, Monarch Title
Tiffani Whittaker, a title attorney with Monarch Title, finds personal reward in supporting causes that connect to her life, like Imagination Stage, where her children take classes, and The Links, Inc., which focuses on issues that impact African-Americans.
“Washington has so much wealth but so much need,” said Whittaker. “If you’re going to live here and take advantage of the richness of the city, you pay your rent, so to speak, by serving those who don’t have access to those resources.” “Being able to support people in need is a privile g e,” s aid Jennifer Landgraff, a sales manager with Caliber Home Loans who serves on the board of DC WISE. In addition to their personal giving, these women are proud that philanthropy is a core part of their businesses.
Jennifer Landgraff, Caliber Home Loans
“I feel really proud to be part of this group of women in D.C. real estate who all feel like this is part of their work,” said Vitale. “It’s not optional to try to help people who are being left behind.” “If everyone has a fair chance, that helps build a stronger community,” said Mills. “And that’s better for everyone.”

with Jill Schwartz
What would you like homeowners to know about you as an individual?
The success of the Jill Schwartz Group has for the most part been kept a secret. I am constantly asked the question, “How did you begin your career in real estate and become an overnight success? Is it luck? What’s your magic formula?” I would like homeowners to know that as an individual, I absolutely love my career. I live the life of a luxury real estate professional seven days a week, and 24 hours a day. It’s an old fashion formula, but it’s not unique. It is good, unedited, nonphotoshopped raw hard work. It is essential that I have a repertuar of data and statistics of current listings and sales. I make it a point to tour most listings so I can have the knowledge of all the on and off-market inventory.
Where is your favorite place to escape in the District?
I love to relax and network on the rooftop at The Graham Hotel.
What is your favorite restaurant? Bar? Coffee shop?
Quite honestly, I am at Starbucks three times a day. I love the app, the in and out, and they always know what I want to order.
What are your hobbies and/or passions?
I follow the stock market and read all of the news e-blasts and try to form my own opinion and analysis, between news, fake news, facts, and Twitter.
What TV show are you currently obsessed with?
I am a Luxury Tiny Homes fan. I watch every episode. It is very calming to me. Most of the properties I list are over 10,000 square feet on multiple acres. I love how the millennial generation finds a way to pack it all into less than 300 sq feet and be digital and portable nomads exploring the country.
Do you currently support any community nonprofit projects?
Currently I am helping raise money on behalf of Fundacion Bechara for Hurricane Maria relief efforts in Puerto Rico. All funds collected will go directly to the people affected. No overhead costs. Every dollar will be put to work. To Donate Please Visit: www.fundacionbechara.org
What is your favorite vacation destination?
I love Beaver Creek and Aspen, Colorado. There is great food, great weather in summer, skiing in winter, and there is a Compass office for me to work remotely.
What is your favorite home design/decor trend?
I’m all about the trend of everything looking elegantly sleek. There has to be clean lines and seasonal pops of color for personality. I am not afraid to go outside the trendy decor and be bold. I am immaculate and love to decorate and try new pallets. It’s a fun way to be expressive, minimalistic, and edgy all at the same time.
What do you love most about DC?
The things I love most about DC are the four seasons, the people, the restaurants, theater and arts, politics, energy, and the transformation of the city, which is our team’s coined name, “Transitioning Bricks to Brownstones.” Most importantly, after 30 years of living here, it’s where my home, friends and family live.

What would you like homeowners to know about you as an individual? I’m a hard working, big-hearted Washington native. I love the city, seeing how it’s evolving, and how new mixes with the old – particularly because we work with some lovely renovations.
Where is your favorite place to escape in the District?
Rock Creek Park – all that green in the middle of the city can always relax me. The boathouse, the stables, Carter Barron, and the zoo! I love it all.
What is your favorite restaurant? Bar? Coffee shop?
My favorite restaurant is Barcelona on 14th St NW. I can’t get enough of the tapas! District Winery near the Navy Yard has the best drinks and views in the whole city.
What are your hobbies and/or passions?
I am a goalie on a women’s ice hockey team for 5 years now! My passion is traveling. I have taken my two children to China, and I’ve been to Tibet . The Babbington Team enjoys going to launches of new Compass offices. The most recent ones we’ve been to are Boston and San Francisco.

What is your favorite home design/decor trend? Barn doors, accent walls, and mid-century Modern
What are you looking forward to most about the fall season? Changing leaves, fires in the evening, and football

Welcome TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD
CONGRATULATIONS! Whether it’s a condo in Dupont Circle or a Colonial in Chevy Chase, moving into a new home in DC is an exciting time. Once the boxes are (mostly) unpacked, it’s time to get out an explore your new neighborhood. If you’re in the DC area, there are bound to be dozens of activities and charming spots to check out, so it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Here are a few tips for diving into your new ‘hood!
KEEP A L O O KO U T
WEB WISDOM
BIRDS OF A F E AT H E R
GO WITH YO U R G U T
It’s easy to be glued to your phone when power-walking to Metro, but this is the time to observe and learn. Keep your eyes peeled for concert flyers, pop up shops, local comedy shows, and more. Looks like you’ve got a busy weekend planned with zero effort!
As always, the internet is making our lives a little easier. Check out websites, blogs, and social media accounts dedicated to keeping tabs on the DC scene. Classics like Thrillist or Washingtonian are great starting place, and dive into Instagram with searches for hashtags like #dcnightlife, #dcmusic, and #dceats.
Found your *perfect* coffee shop for Saturday morning cold brew? Odds are other regulars will have the same taste as you in local spots. Pick their brains for inspiration on what bar to check out if you like the same book store, and what boutique to hit if you love the same music venue.
When all else fails, don’t be afraid to just go in! If you’re passing by a place that looks right up your alley, don’t waste time trying to plan a specific outing (then forgetting and rescheduling said plan). Take the time to stop, check it out, and text whoever needs to come back with you for next time! I SSUE N O. 6 21
