Letter From the PRESIDENT

As the President of the Board of the Citizens Association of Georgetown (CAG) I want to welcome you to the 12th season of the Concerts in the Parks. For me, the first concert marks the official start of summer, and it is my favorite way to reconnect with friends and neighbors in our beautiful parks after a long winter and busy spring! Concerts founder Elizabeth Miller had a vision to gather friends and neighbors together to enjoy live music in our wonderful Volta and Rose parks – our virtual backyards! Since that first concert the program has grown and expanded in wonderful ways – bigger audiences, growing families, more activities and now food trucks! These events showcase what Georgetown is all about – its energy, charm and small town feel. This year, we have a great line-up of bands including our favorite singing songwriting Georgetowner Rebecca McCabe performing with Human Country Jukebox, plus the southern funk sounds of Dixie Power Trio, and lively Pop/Americana Style of Laura Tsaggaris. This year’s concerts will take place on Sunday, May 18th – keeping Georgetown Green! Sunday, June 15th – celebrating Father’s Day, and Sunday, July 13th – patriotic parade! As in previous years there will be plenty of fun family activities, and sweet and savory treats for all concert-goers, especially the children. The amount of work that goes into putting these concerts together is enormous. The Board and I extend a huge THANK YOU to the Concerts Chair Hannah Isles and the Concerts Committee for all of their efforts. I’d also like to thank all of our sponsors. Although these concerts are free to the public they cost quite a bit to produce and we couldn’t do it without your help. CAG is the oldest civic association in Washington, DC. For 130 years, the organization has worked to preserve the historic character of Georgetown and improve the quality of life for all members of the community. Now with over 1300 members, our association is addressing a myriad of important topics and issues. If you are not a member of CAG, please consider joining. More information can be found at www.cagtown.com. But, for right now, grab a cupcake, kick back, relax and enjoy the show! Pamla Moore President

GYPSY SALLY’S PRESENTS Rebecca McCabe with Human Country Jukebox

Rebecca McCabe’s musical roots started early and run deep. She began playing piano at age 4, was the church pianist where her father pastored in Brooklyn, NY by third grade, and studied piano at the renowned Chautauqua Institution in New York in high school. She continued to study through college receiving her bachelor's degree in music. After graduating she moved to Nashville, TN. Now Rebecca divides her time between DC, where she raises her two children, and Nashville where she collaborates with legendary writers such as Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby Braddock (wrote George Jones' hit, "He Stopped Loving Her Today"), Fred Koller ("Angel Eyes") and Rory Bourke ("The Most Beautiful Girl"). Rebecca is represented by two major Nashville publishing companies, and composes and arranges for film and TV in her home studio in Georgetown. She has performed live at such renowned venues as the Kennedy Center, Bluebird Cafe and Douglas Corner. A taste of Texas in the nation's capital, a bit of Dixie in the District, The Human Country Jukebox plays the best classic country and western songs by the likes of Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and more. If these songs don't get your hands clapping and your feet stomping you should probably see a doctor. And don't say, "I don't like country music." If you like great singing, expert playing, soulful, bluesy, "I'm so sad I could drink, so happy I could drink some more" music then you'll enjoy The Human Country Jukebox (www.humancountryjukebox.com).

ZACK SMITH and Dixie Power Trio

The Dixie Power Trio (DPT) is a four-piece group dedicated to the music and sounds of Louisiana. Formed in 1992, the band (led by tubist Andy Kochenour and cornet/ accordionist Zack Smith) has spent the last decade performing for audiences in clubs, concerts, and schools. The group is based in Fredericksburg, VA and has toured extensively throughout the United States in support of their seven independently produced recordings. “Zydeco Dog” is the band’s most recent release and was recorded in 2007. DPT plays a gumbo of different styles including zydeco, Cajun, New Orleans jazz, funk, street parade, and rock. The songs are a mix of Louisiana-flavored originals and covers—all with a unique, happy-go-lucky attitude. The band’s music has been featured on NPR’s “All Thing’s Considered” and on several WB television shows. Over the past few years the DPT has shared the concert stage with many Louisiana music luminaries including Wynton Marsalis, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Terrence Simien, Chubby Carrier, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Olympia Brass Band, and Beausoleil.

LAURA TSAGGARIS and her band

My early life in suburban Pittsburgh gave few indications that I would end up being a musician. I didn't start playing guitar until I was 16, and I had serious stage fright that limited me to solo performances in the bathroom. But, I found a way to get over that and recorded my first album, Proof, on my own record label in 2005. Right around this time, my older brother, Jason, was very ill with cancer and did not win the battle. My brother gave me an incredible gift by showing me how precious life is at such a young age. I went back to work in the studio to make Keep Talking in 2009. It was rewarding to feel like a lot of people got where I was going with the album. Things were great musically, but I was left frustrated on the business side of things. Alas, these are the times when it's great to be a songwriter. I channeled the full spectrum of my feelings into what I think are the most captivating melodies on EVERYMAN. Just another example of what happens when the ordinary becomes extraordinary. In taking on a life of their own, these songs have re-energized me. I hope they do the same for you.
