M
y secret to interior design: find a special piece, favorite color, inspiration or family heirloom and design around it. In our home, the design aesthetic seemed to effortlessly transition from “art to our soul.” The paintings in our home were created by local artists from various places we have lived, where our wonderful children were born and our favorite vacation destinations. It has taken many amazing and exciting years to complete our home’s canvas with these unique pieces that are priceless reminders of the special meaning that the word “home” evokes. Our art is a timeline of our lives. Much of the artwork in my home came from China and Vietnam, where our children were born. As my husband and I walked through remote villages in each country, we quickly discovered that interpretations of art and beauty, while distinct in each culture, have a universal appeal to ones’ heart. In China, on the outskirts of Beijing, we found an art supply store that doubled as a gallery for students. Here we purchased a few paintings on canvas, which began our collection. In Vietnam, the streets are filled with small homes tucked away in a labyrinth of incredibly long and narrow corridors filled with artists doing interpretations of famous artists but our search led us to a group of young and talented artists that were inspired to paint what they wished and not open to imitation of others. We feel very fortunate that we happened upon these spectacular artists. One day soon, we hope to bring our children back to these places and add to our collection of art and memories. These paintings have inspired the style and feel of our home and depict the beauty of our children’s heritages.
“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” — Pa b l o Picass o
This idea of art being our focal point made me curious to ask my neighbor what inspired her home design which so beautifully depicts her Iranian heritage. She told me an enlivening story about her favorite piece of art in her home. In the late 1950’s, her mother traveled to San Francisco to study. While there, she fell in love with a rendition of the painting “ The Misunderstood” by Man Ray (1938). She returned to Iran with her treasured artwork. When the revolution occurred, she left with her children to England and left most of their belongings behind, including the Man Ray. In 1990, my friend traveled to Iran where she rediscovered the artwork that had such meaning to her mother still gracing the family homes walls. It has remained as a timeless memory for her as it now hangs above the hearth of their home. The dictum for District Home Magazine is “Every home has a story. We help you tell it.” We truly believe this and anticipate that our designers and homes will inspire our readers to create their own unique style of “Art and Soul.” I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the support and patience you have given me while starting DHM Philadelphia. This has been a collaborative effort and I could not have done this without the support of my family and friends. Thank You. Please enjoy the magazine!

A Tour of Northern Liberties with Hollis Thompson
InsIde
PersPecTive We were given a tour by Hollis Thompson of the Philadelphia 76ers of the neighborhood he calls home, Northern Liberties. Known as perpetually up-and-coming area that has now arrived it has everything a creative, young professional is looking for in a neighborhood. Located just north of Center City, Northern Liberties is one of the most sought after sections of Philadelphia. The streets are lined with trees and historical character. And the population of students, artists, designers, and young professionals creates a suave and cultured atmosphere. he real estate market is better than ever in Northern Liberties right now. The revitalization projects and neighborhood improvements have helped to increase real estate values in recent years. It is currently one of the most coveted spots for both residential and commercial real estate. Compared to the same period a year ago, the median sales price has increased about 32%. Featuring row houses, apartments, condos, and luxury homes, there is something perfect for everyone.
Bar Ferdinand
We visited on a beautiful sunny day in early May and were able to see why Northern Liberties has become such a popular neighborhood. The streets of NoLibs, as many residents call it, are lined with quirky and quaint restaurants, gastro pubs, and boutiques. If you’re looking for activity, take a stroll down Liberties Walk. The four blocks are filled with independently-owned shops and restaurants, and it’s a great place to people-watch. Across the street, check out The Piazza. It’s a beautifully landscaped, 80,000 square-foot, open-air plaza with free events year-round.The square is surrounded by three buildings, including 35 artists’ studios, boutiques, and restaurants. Here are a few of our suggestions.

Located in Northern Liberties, Bar Ferdinand specializes in traditional tapas, modern tapas, and other small Spanish dishes. Founder Owen Kamihira founded the restaurant in order to give residents a local meeting place where they could enjoy tapas and wine together. Kamihira has lived in the Northern Liberties community for the past 28 years and has worked in the restaurant industry for fifteen.
Named one of the “Best of Philly” by Philadelphia Magazine in 2010, Rustica describes its cuisine as a mixture of “unusual pizza and sandwiches.” The rustic Northern Liberties pizza parlour has a unique combination of pizza and other Italian inspired dishes. The menu also includes a vast selection of wines to complement the Italian cuisine. the Blind Pig
This local pub, which is open for both brunch and dinner, features over 60 canned beer options and serves comfort food to local
neighbors in the area. Owner David Hentz buys his ingredients from local markets and his recipes often reflect seasonal trends. One of the pubs most famous dishes, the “Thanksgiving Bites,” consist of small balls of turkey, which are covered in mashed potatoes and stuffing and then deep fried. Along with the “Thanksgiving Bites,” the pub serves a variety of comfort food in a typical bar setting. standard taP
The Standard Tap maintains strong ties with the Northern Liberties and greater Philadelphia community by serving local beers and buying all of their ingredients locally. Their diverse draft selection comes from breweries in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware while their food comes primarily from local farmers and vendors. The Standard Tap has also received a variety of local awards and was named one of the “Top 50 Bars” by Philadelphia Weekly and one of the “50 Best Restaurants” by Philadelphia Magazine.

Center City + rittenhouse sq. Luxury Condo Market
Reid Rosenthal of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach, REALTORS® takes us into this hot market that has been moving quickly over the past year. ising real estate prices, low interest rates, and a low inventory of homes for sale is making 2014 a good year to sell your home. Sales are increasing year-over-year, and the Philadelphiaarea housing market continues to be strong and home buyers remain aggressive. these factors taken together will make this year a great real estate year. Price your property right and it will sell. Pricing real estate right the first time is the only way to maximize what you’ll make in the end. In this market, it’s the only way you will receive multiple bids and more money in return. Living in reality is much more profitable than pricing with emotion. Bountiful Blues
30 ISSU E N O. 2
in 2014
we
have already seen some of the 2014 color trends hit the runways of Paris this past October—but how do these translate to your home? Well, the key industry tastemakers and influencers have spoken and blue is stealing the scene this upcoming year. From soft, neutral chambrays to dazzling and rich cobalt blues, the possibilities are endless. At the quieter end of the spectrum, the calming, lighter blues will be a source of optimism and tranquility in any space. The beauty of these neutral-toned blues lies in their ability to seamlessly pair with a variety of other colors. They can serve as the palette of an inviting and soothing bathroom, or work perfectly in the living room as a muted hint of color on a linen couch. On the other end of the spectrum for 2014, we have the scintillating, deep blues that are inspiring designers across the globe. Slightly muted, yet still vibrant and enticing, these blues are the perfect splash of passion for throw pillows or an elegantly dramatic accent wall. These deeper blues are rich and expressive—perfect not only on a chic gown, but also in your home. The crème of the 2014 blues are those that are calmer, and more neutral by nature when compared to their companions on the color wheel, but still packed with emotion, elegance, and life. This coming year, it seems that blue will in fact be the new black not only in the world of fashion, but in homes across the Philadelphia area as well. How do these hues of blue inspire you?

rinceton, new Jersey, tucked between Philadelphia and new york, is most famous for its prestigious Ivy league university. Known for its old shopping villages and parks, it is the ideal college town. however, beyond Princeton’s allure of academics and historical charm, it is in the center of the garden state’s lesser-known horse country.
Spanning over green fields, pastures, and farms, New Jersey is home to thousands of horses that are raised for racing, breeding, and the hugely successful recreational riding industry. Within this expanse of success, Princeton shines brightly as a hub for equestrian competition and instruction. It has become a destination for national champions and competitive riders who seek out new Jersey for the top qualifying venues. for these riders, hunter farms is among the best for competition. founded in 1982 by andrew Philbrick, a competitive veteran himself, hunter farms has become a world-class horse facility. once a bankrupt and broken riding stable, Philbrick has transformed the space into a success. there is no one better to take on the job, as Philbrick himself is no stranger to achievement. having won seven show jumping grand Prix cups and as a member of the u.s. equestrian team, he has the passion and skills to bring his vision for hunter farms to a reality, serving as both an instructional facility for all levels and a showcase for elite professionals. the balance between novice instruction and top competition preserves the magic and purity of the sport. today, the farm is located off of great road with an additional facility in skillman. the additional 110-acre space is 2.5 miles away from hunter farms and has become home to the Princeton show Jumping event where spectators have the chance to be up close to olympic gold medalists and some of the world’s best horses each year. they experience elite professionals ride, train and compete. Just 6 miles from Princeton, it is a perfect weekend activity for any new Jersey horse lover or family. In addition, every sunday at the skillman location is “family Day” where there are free pony rides, petting zoos and face painting for children. Philbrick and hunter farms have something for everyone in horse country, from children to riding professionals. hunter farms and places like it keep the fantasy of horseback riding alive for all members of the community. by engaging with the people of Princeton, it will continue to be an important draw within new Jersey’s horse country. St. Michaels takes all of these features and scales them down to create an intimate, tightknit community. Inns housed at the legendary Perry Cabin and the renowned Five Gables allow guests to simultaneously engage with historical landmarks in the area and enjoy the industry standard in comfort. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum offers anything a boat enthusiast could desire, including an on-site boat builder and a working sailing club. Annapolis quietly sits at the helm of much of American history. The United States Naval Academy calls the city by the bay home, as do several commemorations of African-American history and achievement. The city carries a rich sailing tradition and a potpourri of culinary experiences. For the former, one can look to City Dock (naturally the hub of the city) perpetual entertainment. Everything from boat tours to weeknight races can be found around the dock. As a part of Maryland’s famous Chesapeake Bay, lofty expectations are put up against Annapolis’ food culture; it passes, in graceful fashion. Fine dining establishments litter Main Street. Lewne’s Steakhouse lightly sizzles the taste buds and wows residents with time-tested pairings. In a traditional manner, O’Leary’s Seafood calls to vacationers with promises of sated stomachs. Annapolis’ murmur includes some of the nation’s best wine; in retrospect, enjoying wine and commanding the sea is an intuitive pair. Whichever you visit for, Annapolis proves a perfect getaway.
