eldom can we hold the antinomy of past and present together in an elegant fashion; when we do navigate that landscape properly, we arrive at pure exquisiteness. A challenge that comes with touching up one of the area’s few remaining nineteenth-century large estates lies in maintaining that very identity which makes it so unique. From the foyer to the study, from the sunroom to the grounds, each space requires the utmost attention to detail, in both restorative and entertaining efforts. As one walks through each room, intriguing features are revealed effortlessly. Each room exists not as a void, but as an unturned moment, brimming with potential. Replete with 10,000 square feet of completely impressionable space, the house is meant to both properly host and humbly impress guests with a quietly handsome appeal. By maintaining elements of yore and introducing the days to come, the property guarantees a special sort of longevity, additionally engrained in the history and location.

“ Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.” — Dr. Seuss
‘Tis the Season ith the holidays in full swing now, the thought of gifting surges back to the front of minds across the area. No one can deny the importance of charity, but remember, money isn’t our lone resource. Time and laughter stand as shining examples of the human element of giving. Even though time becomes a precious resource during the holiday season, you can always find a way to brighten another life by slowing down and taking the time to listen.
W
Despite the economic downturn of the past decade or so, the District has stayed more than afloat. Business across the city has continued to boom; in a way, we live in a bubble that largely failed to pop when the going got rough. Fortune and opportunity both smile upon Washingtonians, and with this, we have a duty to bring equal joy and happiness to others. We each have something to be thankful for, from good health to good company; we must continue to pay it forward. If you find your passion in helping animals, reading to children, or any of the other innumerable opportunities across the area, we invite you to follow up and make some time to help someone in need over the holidays. In the end, our responsibilities lie outside of ourselves. Gifts can be as brief as a smile to a stranger; no matter how you want to give this season, make sure to put warmth in another person’s heart. Thank you. We hope you enjoy the magazine!

Up & Coming
Thomson & Cooke Architects After navigating the industry as a young architect, Neal Thomson decided to begin a boutique architectural firm with another industry figure. After more than a decade of collaboration with Patrick Cooke, Thomson & Cooke Architects has emerged on the scene, ready to cater to a Washington landscape that craves redesigned spaces and fresh buildings. Neal Thomson talked to us about his path to the helm of his own firm and the excitement of “being on the come up.” District Home Magazine: What’s it like to head your own firm now? How does that compare to past experiences? Thomson & Cooke Architects: Last year was a really exciting year. We decided to take the leap and start Thomson & Cooke Architects, fulfilling a long-time goal for both of us. As owners, we feel a greater responsibility to our clients as trusted advisors and we’re personally invested in the success of each of our projects in a way we never were before. We’ve always worked for full service architecture firms—those that provide feasibility and concept design through construction documents, interiors and move-in. It is important to us that our own firm offers that same level of service. It helps
us maintain our design standards and allows us to remain involved from start to finish. DHM:What are the benefits of working with a boutique firm, from a client’s perspective? TCA: For us, as a newer firm we bring a lot of energy and spirit to our projects, and it’s important that we’re accessible to our clients. We prefer the small scale of our office so that we can both be directly involved day to day in the project work. That provides our clients with a lot of comfort and trust. We emphasize quality and craftsmanship and create custom designs for each of our clients. Getting the clients involved in our process is critical in our design development; we don’t dust off old drawings and reuse
them, rather we take the time to listen to our clients’ needs and design a home that works for them. DHM:What are some upcoming projects for Thomson & Cooke Architects? TCA: We have a broad portfolio of work on the boards both geographically, from Capitol Hill to Arlington to Chevy Chase, and project type, from interior renovations to new homes and to historic condo conversions. The mix is what excites us and keeps us on our toes. A few projects on the boards include a new house under design with an incredible team in the Palisades neighborhood of DC and a historic restoration in Chevy Chase, MD. DHM:What are some of the fun projects you’ve done since starting the firm? TCA: We’ve worked with a developer to design three new homes in Arlington that are now under construction. This was new for us. We had never designed on spec before and found the process exciting for different reasons than our client-focused work. In Chevy Chase, MD we designed renovations for three families who are neighbors. It was fun to get to know the families and the proximity made scheduling meetings easy!

Look all you want, but you won’t find a city with more opportunities for sheer joy. Given all of the iconic chances for laughter and smiles, New York extends a well-intentioned reception to the entire world, inviting everyone to come and play. Of course, crowds don’t supply the perfect fit, and luckily the city sits chock-full of boutique family experiences.
THE CITY
F
In the spirit of the season, start off the day with a nostalgic cup of hot chocolate from Le Churro; the kids get their fill of rich cocoa while you prepare for the day with a dose of espresso. With the rest of the day ahead, the family can head over to the Art of the Brick exhibit at Times Square; for a reasonable price, the group can view some of the world’s most elaborate and famed LEGO® art. While it deviates from the theme of intimacy, it serves as guaranteed fun, for children and adults alike. After such an engaging activity, lunch looms in the horizon; no matter which borough you choose, the city has nearly limitless dining options. inding an appropriate hotel for the family can prove difficult, especially in one of the world’s most popular cities. Scattered across the concrete kingdom, you find quite a few boutique hotels that extend the same quality service of a chain, yet retain a clear element of personality and satisfaction. As soon as you set your luggage down in traveler favorites like the Casablanca Hotel and the Library Hotel, you immediately feel at home. Both venues come furnished with places to eat, assuring that the children are never too far away from food.

of Hell’s Kitchen holds as a favorite, and with their wide selection of doughy delights, it’s difficult to argue with. Both the venue and menu are perfect for kids, with options and distractions that are sure to induce the obligatory post-lunch nap. Just over the bridge in trendy Williamsburg, Juniper offers up one of the city’s best burgers, as well as a slew of down-home favorite like sweet potato fries and baked mac and cheese. Operating on a full stomach, it’s time to find some more activities. The Children’s Museum of the Arts, quietly nestled in South Village, provides the rare opportunity for parents to relax and let the kids roam freely. The museum features pieces done by children, and even gives a space for kids to create new artwork (an added perk comes with not needing to clean up). If the Museum Mile proves too daunting for the family, you can seek out entertainment elsewhere in some of the smaller museums, like the Museum of Math, the American Folk Art Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum. After a day of exploring the city, make sure to enjoy a wonderful dinner at Forgetmenot, an American eatery situated near the tip of the island. They serve up exquisite bruschetta and they know their way around a panini; their venue merits a try. If traditional Italian piques your interests, give Luzzo’s a try. Their authentic selections include a diverse array of pasta and pizza selections, enough to sate refined palates, yet still friendly enough to make any child smile. No matter where dinner is served, make sure to smile fully in the presence of your loved ones, to savor every morsel of the city. Story by Fahad Abdul

Waterford & Phillips Farm
39715 Old Wheatland Road, Waterford, Virginia ~ $1,599,900
Visitors to Waterford often admire the scenes of meandering creek, broad floodplain & green hills to the west of the village. Less often appreciated are the many historic ties between the farm & village, strong links forged over some 275 years of shared peril and prosperity. These bonds between Waterford & the Phillips Farm typify the once-common interdependence of thousands of early American farms & villages. Elsewhere growth & progress have destroyed the old ties. Here, for now, they can still be seen & felt. Here lies the Thomas Phillips Farm in historic Waterford; 74.11 acres overlooking open rolling hills adjacent to Waterford Foundation Parklands, Waterford Historic Village & Catoctin Creek; offering a Quaker built stone bank barn; corn crib; pond; several outbuildings; circa 1700 stone house; a quaint cottage & the Victorian main house all with original floors & windows waiting for your special renovation. 3 divisions are permitted on this conservation easement property.

Brookland
A Warm Welcome
Stories of integrating, fusing, and inviting change fill the pages of the Brookland history book. Since the middle of the 20th century, the area has made incredible strides to generate one of the city’s most sought-after neighborhoods. We spoke to the leading real estate agent in Brookland, Kymber Lovett-Menkiti, who has been based in the neighborhood since 2005. She provided insight to the neighborhood they’ve been calling home for quite some time now. » »

The vivid authenticity of Menomalé, a gourmet pizza venue equipped with a full list of top beers and wines, invites residents in and supplies them with a fresh experience. The neighborhood will also see the addition of several new restaurants: Busboys and Poets, &Pizza, Brookland’s Finest Bar and Kitchen (by the owners of the Pug), Steel Plate (owners of Rustik), as well as new restaurants by the owners of Meridian Pint and the owners of Smith Common on H ST. While the community offers a full plate of delectable eateries, it gets in touch with aesthetics with two niche art galleries. Wohlfarth Galleries, a two-decade remnant of the area’s history, specializes in the American Impressionist tradition. Further down the way, Art Enables provides individuals with mental disabilities the opportunity to express themselves through art; they both display and sell the artwork, mediating what becomes a valuable relationship between patrons and these impeccable artists. Also, venues like Dance Place, the Edgewood Arts Center, and the renowned arts walk at Monroe St. Market all make artistic expression a little more public than usual. In recent months, the neighborhood has witnessed the trending of “yarn bombers”—artists who have taken on the task of adorning public objects with decorative knit-ware. This gives residents a chance to express themselves and learn more about each other, as well as the neighborhood.
Brookland’s streets seem lined with memoirs and recollections. Often one will hear the phrase “Historic Brookland” thrown around, and without peering around the neighborhood, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Houses of the likes of Robert C. Weaver and Ralph Bunche, as well as many other American heroes, dot the area’s layout; a plethora of Catholic institutions, of which reached their peak in the 1940’s, add to this preservation of history. How the neighborhood manages the relationship between thriving business, settled suburbia, and rich history, will always serve as a testament to the wonderful chemistry present in the heart of Brookland. Story by Fahad Abdul Photo courtesy of Arianna Christensen
O
ver the past few years, development has sat on the horizon. With quaint restaurants like Little Ricky’s, a self-dubbed “American paladar” that serves up fresh Cuban cuisine, it’s no wonder why Brookland has begun to surge as a real estate market.

A Tour of Brookland with the Menkiti Group
Inside
The Menkiti Group has had the top sales in Brookland since 2007, and has seen the neighborhood flourish in that time. Their presence and ties to the community are visible; their commitment and comprehensive knowledge of the area makes them the premier group when considering owning in Brookland.
Perspective ike any major city, DC splits up into a plethora of neighborhoods and sects, each with a distinct identity. The Brookland neighborhood, which sits in the northeastern corridor of the limits, exudes a unique appeal that has gained quite a bit traction over the past decade. A quick tour of Brookland with the Menkiti Group provides some insight into how the neighborhood has recently developed and why it is now attracting so many residents from across the city.
L
For starters, there have been an influx of major real estate developments—Chancellor’s Row, 901 Monroe, Monroe St. Market, Rhode Island Row, to name a few. Even though this has mostly happened in the past few years, it has led to a lot of new residents and young families moving in. With the fresh additions of restaurants and retail, seemingly popping up every week, the neighborhood’s growing population has anchors for years to come. Brookland also offers up visual and mental relief. Downtown, chock full of massive concrete buildings and people rushing from corner to corner, can become overwhelming after a certain point. Brookland
shines because it allows convenient transportation to downtown; it also stands out because of its tree-lined streets, relatively large homes with spacious, rolling yards and its diverse array of architectural stylings, from bungalows and Victorians,Tudor- and farm-style houses to modern architecture and even a round house. With all of the recent developments, the neighborhood has seen 18.98% appreciation year to date over last year’s average sales price according to a recent report by RBI (Real Estate Business Intelligence). The neighborhood still offers an attractive price point with most homes selling between 500k-750k. As the new restaurants, shops and amenities open up, the Menkiti Group has found that more and more home buyers and investors from across the city and the surrounding suburbs are focusing in on Brookland for their home search. What Kymber Lovett-Menkiti finds most special about Brookland is the strong sense of community, as shown by the neighborhood monthly happy hours, an outdoor summer movie series, countless kids’ playgroups, an esteemed garden club and civic association and so much more. Story by Fahad Abdul

whites with Nestor Santa-Cruz Selecting gifts can prove tiring for some, or tremendously enjoyable for others. As an interior designer, I often have to like it even more than the person receiving it. It comes down to “reference and themes,” and I use a certain design discipline to achieve gift giving success. In the end, what makes the process worth it for me is the anticipation of the joy it will bring to my friends and family; each time I select a gift, I see myself creating another design story.

Giving gifts to ourselves is a luxury; however, buying for the home can become a very personal dilemma. I decided to go virtual shopping around the District and generate for myself an imaginary “home vignette” with the coveted finds. In these searches, I always look for the unexpected, and the “theme” becomes the key. Red, green, silver and gold are the classic tones of the season. But having spent a week in early November in Madrid, I found the city unexpectedly warm and full of light—it was so inspiring. The theme was found, and I decided to base all of my selections on winter whites. Here are my most coveted decor pieces for the vignette I wish to propose. From light grey to ivory and off-whites, to stark gesso-white and textured creams and beyond, these pieces bring a little luminous warmth inside for the cold winter holidays. Be inspired…

we
have already seen some of the 2014 color trends hit the runways of Paris this past October—but how do these translate to your home? Well, the key industry tastemakers and influencers have spoken and blue is stealing the scene this upcoming year. From soft, neutral chambrays to dazzling and rich cobalt blues, the possibilities are endless. At the quieter end of the spectrum, the calming, lighter blues will be a source of optimism and tranquility in any space. The beauty of these neutral-toned blues lies in their ability to seamlessly pair with a variety of other colors. They can serve as the palette of an inviting and soothing bathroom, or work perfectly in the living room as a muted hint of color on a linen couch. On the other end of the spectrum for 2014, we have the scintillating, deep blues that are inspiring designers across the globe. Slightly muted, yet still vibrant and enticing, these blues are the perfect splash of passion for throw pillows or an elegantly dramatic accent wall. These deeper blues are rich and expressive—perfect not only on a chic gown, but also in your home. The crème of the 2014 blues are those that are calmer, and more neutral by nature when compared to their companions on the color wheel, but still packed with emotion, elegance, and life. This coming year, it seems that blue will in fact be the new black not only in the world of fashion, but in homes across the District as well. How do these hues of blue inspire you?
