Reviving 1920’s Craftsman Style How I maintained Chevy Chase Charm By: Steve Agostino

Like so many real estate agents, I am a bit of an armchair architect. . Building this house allowed me to scratch that itch. It's also fun to think about leaving something behind that will be in the neighborhood for many years to come. The design was inspired by homes in the area built in the 1920's. They typically feature high ceilings, big windows and millwork with simple lines. More specifically, we took exterior design cues from three neighboring homes. One feature shared by this house and the ones nearby is the clipped "shoulders" of the roof line. It’s a distinctive look that is fairly common in homes from the 20's.

The house has three features that are very uncommon; the wall of doors between the family room and the screened porch completely retracts which gives you a 12 foot opening to the

outdoors. This is fabulous for entertaining as it brings the outside in without any of the bugs. On the third floor there is an open air covered porch which provides a lovely rooftop view and sightlines all the way to Rock

Creek Park when the leaves are down. The feature that is most fun is the secret playroom on the third floor. What kid doesn't want one? We did make a few changes after the start, specifically the master bedroom was to have a juliet balcony which we decided against. In general, our architect, GTM, really nailed the design so we pretty much followed their lead. We borrowed lots of design ideas from homes in the neighborhood. The overhanging eves, shingle exterior and detailing are all common throughout Chevy Chase DC. I always admired the curved third floor dormer on a house on Morrison Street, so we worked that design feature into this house. While it is clearly a new home, efforts were made to have it fit in with its neighbors.
