International Zero-Carbon and CAM Visit Programme
2–6 September 2024
London and Bedfordshire, UK
Introduction
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is delighted to be a supporting partner of CENEX Expo 2024. The electrification of transport is accelerating across the world, with many countries capitalising on the economic opportunities. The UK is at the forefront of this transition, supporting advances in diverse technologies such as AI, power electronics, lightweighting and battery technology.
The UK automotive industry is at the heart of the new Government’s mission for green economic and industrial growth. To support this, DBT are leading work on a new Industrial Strategy to drive long-term sustainable, equitable and secure growth for all regions of the UK. It will support the Government’s growth mission: to drive the highest sustained growth in the G7, aligned with our missions to increase opportunities for all and make Britain a clean energy superpower.
The automotive sector has a long, proud history in the UK and a bright future. The new Government sees the automotive industry as the jewel in the crown of our manufacturing sector and recognises its integral role in delivering innovation, net zero and helping to drive economic growth. This Government is determined to build on our heritage and continue to secure international investment in the technologies of the future, positioning the UK as one of the best locations in the world to manufacture zero emission vehicles.
Last year was a strong year for UK automotive. The UK manufactured over 1 million vehicles in 2023, the best year since 2019. According to SMMT £23.7 billion of private and public investment commitments were announced including by Agratas, BMW and Nissan. JLR has also committed £15 billion over next 5 years to accelerate their path to electrification, making one of their UK plants and next generation medium size luxury SUV architecture, fully electric.
For those not yet at large scale production, the UK also has innovative programmes at national and local level to develop worldleading technologies in EVs, connected and autonomous vehicles and light weighting. Our R&D ecosystem is famously collaborative –bringing industry, academia and government together to solve the next generation of challenges. Our R&D programmes in the UK deliver world leading results, which has earned the UK a first-class innovation reputation amongst overseas companies. Underpinning all this sector specific support, the UK offers a stable and globally competitive business environment – with access to incredible talent through housing four of the global top ten universities, as well as competitive tax offers such as Freeports and Investment Zones.
This industry is supported by the UK government through dedicated teams in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) that bring sector, market and regulation experts together with world-class trade negotiators and business-support teams across the UK and overseas.
DBT is responsible for the sector’s R&D funding mechanisms, helps businesses to export and invest, negotiates market access and trade deals and champions free trade. We support businesses at every stage of their business planning cycle – giving automotive companies advice as well as practical support with expertise and contacts through our network of specialists in the UK and across the world. The strength of our sector and our global network also gives us opportunities, where we can encourage UK business to grow internationally by showcasing the best of British innovation at key events such as CENEX Expo 2024.
As part of this showcase, the DBT Automotive International Trade and Investment Team is pleased to bring to CENEX Expo an international delegation from around the world. Our international guests are keen to explore opportunities to collaborate with UK companies and organisations, whether it is creating new partnerships or securing new supply chain relationships in zero emission propulsion, vehicle lightweighting or in connected and automated mobility.
For UK companies at Cenex Expo, visit us at the DBT International Business Lounge or the UK Government Pavilion, both in Hall 3, to discuss your international trade ambitions. You can see the details of the international companies visiting Cenex Expo with DBT by clicking here, where you will be able to see a bio of the international companies taking part.
For our international delegation, you will see the fantastic achievements of this sector over the next few days which I hope will create exciting opportunities for you and the UK’s automotive industry. I wish you all a very successful visit and look forward to meeting all of you in the coming days.
