RACE FOR LIFE 5k AND 10k WILL BE OPEN TO ALL THE FAMILY THIS YEAR

P

EOPLE in Cleethorpes are being encouraged to get the year off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Meridian Park Showground on Sunday 18th May and whatever your fitness level there’s an event to suit you. We spoke to Kay Patchett, Cancer Research UK’s Cleethorpes Event Manager about what makes the Race for Life so special and she said: “Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients access to the latest treatments. And you don’t have to be sporty or superfit to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.” The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Cleethorpes with people across North Lincolnshire and the whole of the UK and raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Taking part in our Race for Life events enables people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now. Race for Life events have been women only since they started, over 25 years ago but from this year onwards they will be open to men and children which means that anyone who has experienced the effects of the disease will be able to join in. Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. To enter Race for Life today visit raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Madness On The Way to Market Rasen Racecourse Over the past few years we’ve seen some fantastic big name performers at Market Rasen Racecourse including the Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Jones and Jess Glynne - and 2019 is shaping up to be even bigger and better than the rest because, following on from the announcement of Craig David, who’s scheduled for Saturday 17th August, The Jockey Club Live and Market Rasen Racecourse have announced a visit from the legendary Madness on Friday 7th June.

Combining ska, reggae, Motown, rock’n’roll and classic pop, and with charismatic frontman Suggs on vocals Madness have become one of the best loved British bands and their sense of humour and ability to find poetry in everyday reality, has led them to hits including Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, Our House and the 1982 #1 House of Fun. The event takes place from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st March and swimmers of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in the world’s biggest annual swimming

Swimathon agreed, adding, “It has been a real joy to see Swimathon develop and mature over the years into the great event it is today. Swimathon gives everyone a chance to get active with friends and family, whilst doing some good at the same time. I am so proud that Swimathon gives so many people the chance to enjoy the water, get swimming and set themselves a challenge.” Wanda Stockdale, a swimmer who has previously participated in Swimathon, said: “I really enjoy taking part in Swimathon - it's a fabulous event, with great atmosphere. Without swimming my life falls apart,

Swimathon began in 1986 with a London only initiative, to encourage more people to get swimming. The launch of the annual event was in 1988 and since then Swimathon has seen more than 700,000 participants at over 1,200 different pools across the UK, getting involved, swimming for the challenge and raising money for charity. Swimathon attracts swimmers of all levels, from experienced Swimathon participants to complete novices and this is reflected in the different challenges available to those taking part. Swimathon has raised funds for many charities, including Comic Relief, Macmillan, NSPCC, The British Heart Foundation and, most recently, Cancer Research UK & Marie Curie. Last year, Swimathon raised £2.1million, and it’s aiming to raise plenty more this year.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT 2019 AT THE CAXTONS! The Caxtons were founded during the early days of the Second World War and over 75 years later they’re still going strong, offering eight varied productions a year in their own 180 seat theatre and running an extremely successful Youth Theatre group. They hold a regular once a month get together called Keep In Touch Thursdays (or KITT nights for short). New members are always welcome and KITT nights can be a great way to find out if Caxtons is for you. Check the website or social media for further details. The theatre enjoyed a fantastic 2018, celebrating their 75th anniversary with a year of excellent productions, including the newly commissioned Smother by local writer Ben Parfrement Parkes and a riotous version of The Hound Of The Baskervilles, and they’re looking forward to continuing their winning streak into 2019!

EXCITING TIMES IN PROSPECT AS GRIMSBY IS AWARDED £3.2 MILLION IN ARTS FUNDING

T

he last year has seen a wide variety of exciting and innovative arts events in and around Grimsby town centre with events taking place in the Minster and the market, (some of which are illustrated here), and there’ll be plenty more on the way following the announcement by the secretary for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport that Grimsby has been awarded over £3million for a programme of culture works. The money will be matched by further public and private sector funding from the Humber LEP and other partners. The town is one of five locations in the UK to receive the funding for cultural related activities, following a bid for the money by North East Lincolnshire Council. The funding will go towards building a programme of new international events to be hosted in our area, attracting new visitors and investment and creating new public art and cultural spaces to help regenerate historic parts of the town. Support will be on offer to local businesses in the cultural sector and for individuals with a business idea wanting to start their own venture, ensuring that no creative industry initiative is left out. It is hoped that the funding will boost the town over coming years, generating new jobs, new businesses and increasing town centre footfall. Announcing the funding Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Wright MP said: “Creativity, arts and heritage make our towns and cities unique and our communities better places to live. With clear plans in place, this funding provides an incredible opportunity for Grimsby to fully realise the potential of its local heritage and history to create a programme of events to engage the local population, while also creating a sustainable future for local creative businesses.” Councillor Gaynor Rogers, portfolio holder for Tourism, Heritage and Culture at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “We’re thrilled to have been awarded this money. We’re on the cusp of a very exciting time for our area, with the pioneering Great Grimsby Town Deal looking to regenerate our area. Combined with this funding, the potential of our heritage and culture can finally be realised. This funding will help us attract more people to our area, increasing audience and community involvement in cultural activities, creating new major international events, new art and more creative spaces for people to enjoy.”

GRAHAM FIRTH: CAPTURING THE LIFE AND PEOPLE OF THE MARKET The Art On The Market initiative gave us some really exciting events last year (check out the images opposite if you’ve forgotten) so it’s good to know that there are more in the pipeline including, from late January through to May, artist Graham Firth who will be working on Top Town Market to capture the routine of market life and uncovering the characters of the market - the stallholders and customers who make it our favourite place to do our shopping. Graham, who spent most of his career as a lecturer at Doncaster College, specialises in printmaking, including lithography, etching, screen printing and lino printing and he will be working on the Market most Thursdays and Saturdays using his own homemade press and there will also be a programme of workshops, demonstrations and a final exhibition in May.

IT’S ANIMAL MAGIC! X-FACTOR WINNER MATT TERRY IS A ROARING SUCCESS IN MADAGASCAR AT GRIMSBY AUDITORIUM

I

f you’re in the mood for a great family night out at the theatre then we’ve got some good news for you because there’s a riot of music and colour at Grimsby Auditorium this week when Madagascar, an adaptation of the 2005 Dreamworks animation, comes to town. With oodles of energy, great tunes and a dash of high camp, it rattles along at a gallop as it progresses from one set piece to the next. Kids will love it and adults will have a great time too. The choreography is superb, with each animal character expressing themselves through their own unique dance moves, costumes are magnificent, particularly for Jamie Lee Morgan’s endearingly solemn Melman the hypocongiraffe and Gloria the swaying hipped hippo, (voiced superbly by Timmika Ramsay and with some marvellously funny moves). Large parts of the narrative are performed by puppets, including penguins and lemurs. It’s one of those shows where the puppeteers simply walk on stage behind their characters with no attempt to hide themselves and somehow they’re so good at bringing them to life the operators just vanish into the scenery. Highlights inevitably include I Like To Move It, Move It, sung by King Jeremy of the lemurs, (Jo Parsons comes close to stealing the show from under the snouts of the four leads here), but there are lots of great moments, including Gloria the hippo’s neat way of knocking the wind out of opponents, unseen in these parts since the heyday of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks, the slightly menacing but undeniably charismatic penguin gang and a marvellous sequence on board ship when the animals are forced to communicate through the panels of the crates in which they have been imprisoned. Kids will love every brightly coloured moment and their adults won’t be bored either. The whole show is a knowing nod to the flamboyance of 1970s New York counterculture and even proposes an answer to the thorniest of problems facing fans of classic animation, why does Donald Duck have a half eaten roast chicken in his fridge? In other words, in a world populated by talking animals why are the normal rules of predation and consumption suspended? In modern times it has evolved into the Pepper Pig/Mr Wolf/bacon sandwich conundrum. In Madagascar the central character Alex the lion, (an excellent performance from 2016 X Factor winner Matt Terry, who knew he could sing that well?), struggles to suppress a dark craving for the ample haunches of his best friend Marty the conflicted zebra (played with street smarts a plenty by Antoine Murray-Straughan). It’s a love that dare not speak its name, controllable in captivity where there is a plentiful supply of the red stuff, but liable to break out into tragedy when the animals are in the wild and the absence of butchers and keepers means that Alex may have to take matters into his own paws. Of course, carnage is averted, you knew it would be so it’s not really a spoiler, but not before the cast have sung and danced and puppetted their hearts out, saved the lemurs from their principle predators and learned that in the end true friendship is worth more than steak, however hungry you might be and that sometimes a life in benign captivity is better than eating your best mates. It’s a great show and highly recommended and it runs until Saturday 2nd February. Tickets are available via grimsbyauditorium.org.uk or call the box office on 0300 300 0035.

THE ØRSTED GREAT GRIMSBY 10K 2019 SET TO BE THE GREENEST EVER

T

he Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k is much more than just a road race, it also raises thousands of pounds for charity and creates a wealth of volunteering opportunities. A £1 donation is made from every race entry into a fund shared between the event’s charity partners – Harbour Place, RNLI, Marie Curie, St Andrew’s Hospice, Grimsby Rotary Club, The Health Tree Foundation and Inspire TCI. Last year’s event helped raise around £15,000 directly for the seven charities from race entries, fundraiser places and other initiatives. The total amount raised for charity is believed to be much higher after the many people taking part on

behalf of charities of their own choice are taken into account. This year’s event is set to be the greenest ever, as race organisers, working with headline sponsors Ørsted and North East Lincolnshire Council, take steps to reduce its environmental impact. This includes ditching plastic goodie bags for race finishers, handing out half as many plastic bottles and introducing paper free race information. Other measures also include cycling and lift sharing initiatives, and park and stride, encouraging people to walk and reduce their carbon footprint on race day. This year’s race takes place on Sunday 21st July and entries are already open but you’d better get a jog on if you want a place on the starting line because they’re going fast! You can sign up now at www.greatgrimsby10k.com for just £17 or £15 for affiliated running club members. Speaking at the race launch this week Matthew Wright, Managing Director at Ørsted UK, said: “We’re very proud to call Grimsby our home here

on the east coast. There’s a real community spirit which drives the success of the Great Grimsby 10k each year and we are delighted to be a part of it.” Councillor Jane Hyldon-King, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing at North East Lincolnshire Council, added: “I had a brilliant time at last year’s race and I can’t wait to do it all again. It was wonderful to see so many people, especially local disability groups, taking part in the fun run last year. This is a totally inclusive event that really brings people together and has become something I look forward to every year.” You can follow the Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k using #GY10K on social media for news and race photos at Facebook: Tape2TapeEvents, Instagram: @tape2tapeuk or Twitter: @Tape2TapeEvents

ROSS CASTLE GLOWS RED TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE

O

ne of Cleethorpes’ best known landmarks was bathed in red light on Friday 1st February to mark Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness Day. The display was the result of a campaign by local mother Michelle Aslin whose son Reggie, (pictured left), was born with half a heart. He had to endure open heart surgery at just four days old and although he survived these initial problems he is not expected to live beyond eighteen years of age. Because of the surgery Reggie has already had and will continue to have in the future, he may not qualify for a transplant because his heart is so damaged. “It was heartbreaking, something no parent should have to go through,” Michelle says of Reggie’s treatment. “You do have to kiss your baby goodbye because you don’t know if they’ll be coming back out.” She tries not to think the worst but fears she may never get to see Reggie at his prom, getting married or having children, but the Grimsby mum says she is overjoyed Ross Castle will be lighting up red for Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day. “There are more children living in North East Lincolnshire with CHD than people realise,” she explains. “Lighting up Ross Castle raises awareness that people need to ask questions during pregnancy to see if their baby is affected by the disease so that plans can be in place at birth.” Councillor Kath Wheatley, portfolio holder for children commented, “We’re always keen to support awareness days such as these. My heart goes out to the families who are affected by congenital heart disease and to those whose lives may be cut short because of it.” To find out more and to keep up to date with Reggie’s story go to his Facebook page at REGGIE’S HALF A HEART JOURNEY HLHS.

A TOWN CALLED HOME: EXHIBITION TELLS THE STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE COME TO MAKE THEIR LIVES IN NE LINCOLNSHIRE

A

new exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Centre paints a fascinating portrait of the lives and experiences of people who have moved to the Grimsby since the 1950s. A Town Called Home is organised by Jill Wilson and Tracy Todd of The Equality Practice Ltd with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The exhibition is the culmination of eight months working with members of a wide range of cultural minorities who shared their stories of otherness, of triumph over adversity, of hope, and of the belief that a better future for themselves and their families could be and has been found in our community. Many speak of the warmth and good nature of the people of the town, how beautiful this part of the world is and how much it has to offer and how their impression of their new home town changed as they came to know it better. There are always plenty of negative stories about migration to be found in the media but the stories behind this exhibition offer a powerful counter narrative of hope and industry and of people who arrived in our area with a range of experiences and skills, from welders, engineers, teachers, doctors, business owners, fish factory operatives, carers and more. The stories on display, alongside cultural artefacts and original artwork, are fascinatingly diverse and present the memories of local residents who came to the town from areas as diverse as Zimbabwe, India, Turkey, Cyprus and many others. We went along to the opening on Friday night to meet many of the subjects of the exhibition and to enjoy some fantastic food and dancing. Opening the exhibition, local entrepreneur Andy Green stressed the importance of migration for economic prosperity and looked forward to the contents of the exhibition becoming a vital part of the local history archive. It’s certainly an illuminating collection of personal histories, particularly in a town which has its roots in the story of Grim and Havelok the Dane and definitely well worth a visit and an hour or two of your time. A Town Called Home launches to the public on Saturday 2nd February from 10am-4pm in the Muriel Barker Gallery at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre and runs every day except Mondays until Sunday 30th June. Admission is free.

BRAVING THE COLD AT THE THE YMCA SLEEP EASY

M

ore than 150 people braved sub zero temperatures on one of the coldest nights of the year on to raise money for and awareness of local rough sleeping and homelessness when the YMCA Humber Sleep Over was held in Freshney Place car park on Friday 1st February. In the ten years that it has been running the Sleep Easy has raised more than £150,000 and it is hoped that this year’s event will add another £25,000 to that total - which is divided between various local charities helping the homeless in our area.

Participants were helped by the Freshney Place team who provided security and the all important cardboard for shelter building and there were some highly impressive pieces of architecture, from the relatively simple Toblerone to a fully featured mediaeval castle. To find out more go to www.ymcahumber.com and if you’d like to make a donation to support the YMCA and other charities in their work with homelessness then head for mydonate.bt.com/events/ ymcahumbersleepeasy2019/476609.

A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO GET EXCITED ABOUT – CHINA HERE WE COME!

f you love a big adventure then why not really inspire yourself by setting a different kind of goal for 2019 that will give you the excitement you need and raise money for a fabulous cause at the same time by signing up to take part in one of Marie Curie’s amazing China treks! Marie Curie’s Great Wall of China Trek is a nine day trip with five day’s trekking. It will take you to the 15th Century Ming Dynasty hard rock wall, before descending on local trails to experience the rural life of people in the Hebei Province. Then you can explore bustling Beijing, visiting Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City – as well as the silk market. Marie Curie Treks are designed to provide participants with a sense of achievement, new friendships and the opportunity to raise serious sponsorship for your local Marie Curie services. With a little training, this trek can be within everyone’s capabilities and it doesn’t take place until 19th September 2020 so you have plenty of time to get ready and into shape. Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Lincolnshire Lauren Alexander is full of enthusiasm for the trip. “Not only will you feel the buzz of the outdoors but, by taking part in a sponsored trek, you will also be enabling Marie Curie to continue caring for people living with a terminal illness and their loved one through the local Marie Curie nursing service. In Lincolnshire, we have more than 83 nurses and this is thanks to the general public helping us to fund them each year”, she explains. Your Marie Curie trek place will include training guides to help you get going, a fundraising pack, a Marie Curie T-shirt and access to a private Facebook group

just for your trek so you can chat with fellow trekkers beforehand, sharing tips and training stories along the way. Registration is only £299.00 with a minimum fundraising target of £3,400. If you are up for the challenge then you should contact Lauren on 07525 80531 or lauren. alexander@mariecurie.org.uk . Have a great trek!

A VERY HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR TO YOU! Chinese New Year’s Day, also known as the Spring Festival, is an important date in the traditional Chinese calendar. The date varies but this year it falls on February 5th. It is the high point of a celebration which lasts for fifteen days, from New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival and by tradition it is a day for families and will often feature a reunion dinner. Houses will be cleaned and decorated with red paper cutouts and scrolls of poetry and after the meal is done firecrackers will be set off and gifts of money exchanged in red envelopes. The years of the calendar are named after the twelve animals who make up the Chinese zodiac and their order is drawn from the legend of the Jade Emperor’s great race. This year is the year of the pig. The pig came last in the race and it’s year is therefore twelfth in the calendar cycle. In Chinese tradition the pig represents luck, wealth and honesty. Those born in the year of the pig are believed to be hard working, truthful and sociable with a great sense of humour and quick wittedness.

A WORLD OF FANTASY AND ADVENTURE COMES TO THE CENTRAL HALL

G

rimsby’s Central Hall echoed to the clatter of lightsabers, the squawking of macaws and the occasional heartfelt expelliarmus on Sunday 3rd February when local event organisers Secret Keepers staged Febcon 1, their first comic book and sci-fi convention. There were some fantastic costumes on display, signings by actors from the telly and the silver screen and lots of memorabilia and collectors items to be bought. Our favourite was the magnificent Lego townscape belonging to ten year old Kendra Theaker-Gregerson who has created a magical world of bricks to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital which she attends for treatment. It certainly makes for a spectacularly colourful display with lots of hidden detail to be discovered. Secret Keepers have lots more events on the way and you can find them on Facebook, so take a look and see what’s on the way!

e’re back in the late 1980s and down in LA they’re knee deep in the hoopla and getting deeper all the time. A wicked father and son team of property developers have persuaded the mayor that what the city needs is to rip down the strip, including the legendary Bourbon Room (based on the real life Whisky A GoGo) and the bulldozers are ready to move in. Protestors are chaining themselves together on the streets and things are looking bad for the city built on sex (some of it with llamas) and drugs and rock and roll. And booze of course. Don’t forget the booze. This is the era of Motley Crue and Quiet Riot we’re talking about here. Wannabe actress Sherrie, a small town top as possible - there are no tinkling girl living in a lonely world, (invested pianos and gentle ballads here and with just the right blend of brass and you probably don’t want to be taking vulnerability by Jodie Steele), has the kids with you because this is arrived in town just in time to get definitely adult themed entertainment. mugged and has no choice but to Of course the star of the show, take a job waiting tables for bar owner especially with an audience this Dennis, played by the gloriously over partisan, is local hero Kevin Clifton as the top and surprisingly acrobatic the thoroughly debauched lead singer Kevin Kennedy, (that’s Curly Watts to of rock gods Arsenal, Stacee Jaxx. you and me). And for those who aren’t overly stressed hobbies are a good way of putting some excitement back into your life. Many hobbies also offer a social outlet, particularly those that lend themselves to group activities: golfing rotations, knitting circles, and creative writing groups are good examples. Hobbies that connect you with others can bring the added benefit of social support because the friends you have fun with can become some of your best friends, so hobbies that bring you closer to others are well worth your time. And most importantly (but sometimes forgotten) in all that stresstalk - hobbies bring us pleasure, increasing the amount of joy in your life. And we all need a bit of joy! Researchers have also found beneficial links between hobbies and lower blood pressure, weight and fatigue so it’s pretty clear that on a number of levels a hobby, be it knitting, singing or dog walking, is good for you!

A REQUIEM AN OUTRAGEOUS PRAYER FOR PEACE THE ALAN BARNES OCTET WITH JOSIE MOON AT THE CENTRAL HALL FRIDAY 15th FEBRUARY 2019

T

here was an excited buzz at the Central Hall on Friday night when the Roy Kemp Hall was the venue for the first performance of A Requiem, a new collaboration between Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy and poet Josie Moon Subtitled ‘A suite of music and poetry to commemorate a century of war and to call for peace in our time’, it’s powerful stuff, with Josie Moon’s storytelling more confident and emotional than ever. She’s not afraid of taking on a big theme and telling it her way and she deals with the causes, nature and history of the century or so since the Great War, via the Second World War and up the present day with the proxy wars of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and coming right up to date with the carnage of Aleppo, Baghdad and Basra. The battle between war and peace, light and dark, is played out over changing landscapes and in shifting light, but there are always those who seek to gain advantage from the hostilities, appearing in the text as crow men, carrion eaters who derive their wealth and sustenance from carnage. The Alan Barnes Octet were on excellent form as ever and with a line up including some of the best of contemporary British scene, including Mark Nightingale and Neil Yateson on horns, Gilad Atzmon and Robert Fowler on reeds, Pat McCarthy on guitar, Dave Green on bass and

Seb DeKrom on percussion and of course Alan Barnes himself there was some virtuoso playing and excellent composition on display. What was particularly nice to hear, for those of us who can’t help approaching the whole event like an essay and who sit there trying to follow the argument, was that there was a much stronger connection made between the music and the words than was the case with their previous collaboration, A Fish Tale, making both words and music easier to follow and much more compelling. Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy have created a set of pieces of chamber jazz, infused with elements of cool jazz and bebop, with a breadth of imagination and colour to match the range of the poetry. The overall effect is not just sadness but also a righteous and bright burning anger. A recording of the work will soon be forthcoming and there’s an extensive tour planned for later in the year. The Alan Barnes Octet will return to this area for another performance of A Requiem on July 8th at the auditorium as part of a special summer concert with MAPAS.

TOP TOWN TEENAGE MARKET SET TO RETURN One of our favourite events of 2018 was the visit of the Teenage Market project to Grimsby’s Top Town Market, giving student traders the chance to put their business skills to the test by running their own stalls. The Teenage Market is part of a national initiative offering young people a chance to showcase their entrepreneurial talents and organiser Paula Denton of ourbigpicture has announced that the event will return to Top Town on Saturday 23rd March. So make a note in your diary and pop down to support our local business people of the future and maybe pick up something special. ONE FOR THE BOOKS: THE HAUNTING DELIVERS SOME GENUINELY CREEPY VICTORIAN HORROR AT THE CAXTON THEATRE

A

stranger arrives at a tumbledown mansion on a wild and windswept moor. As night falls a storm sets in and lightning fills the night with strange and disturbing shadows. Doors slam for no reason. Inanimate objects seem to have taken on lives of their own. Birds assault the french windows. Strange voices and the sound of bells fill the air. Welcome to The Haunting, a classic antiquarian ghost story in the style of Dickens (who gets a credit) or MR James, which tells a sombre and at times genuinely creepy tale of the visit of a London bookseller to the home of a long standing client of the family firm and of the strange events which occur. At first the atmosphere is merely uncomfortable, with the present owner of the estate, a younger son who has no love of the house or his deceased father’s library, brusque and unwelcoming but as time passes events grow stranger and the tension builds to almost unbearable levels. It’s a brave thing to do, putting horror live on stage. Whatever makes us scream also has the potential to make us laugh and there’s nothing more depressing for actors and directors than hearing an outbreak of sniggering in the stalls at what is supposed to be a moment of terror. No danger of that here though because director Nigel Stolworthy and his cast of Keiron James and Ruairidh Greig succeed in investing the piece with a sense of dread and foreboding that has the audience on the edge of their seats and builds to a riveting climax that is triumphantly terrifying. With a combination of excellent staging, lighting and sound effect and first class performances from both members of the cast the production hits exactly the right note and is pretty much guaranteed to draw you in. In the preview that I saw a relatively small audience managed several small shrieks, plenty of sharp intakes of breath and a heartfelt expletive which was testament to the level of tension that had been established and thee hard work and talent of all concerned. The Haunting runs from Saturday 19th to Saturday 26th January and if you love a great ghost story then this is a show definitely not to be missed! For tickets visit www.caxtontheatre.com or call Grimsby & Cleethorpes TIC on 01472 323111

Garden Aid offer gardening services including landscaping, fencing, weed control, lawn care, general maintenance and all types of tree work . We also donate 10% of our profits to Age Care Development Uganda, a charity which takes care of elderly people in the Kyenjojo district. So when you use Garden Aid not only does your garden look great but you really are helping to care for two communities.

GARDEN AID CARING FOR TWO COMMUNITIES Age Care Development is a local charity which has built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of western Uganda, and especially with the community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young), to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. Even basic medicines like paracetamol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. Our good friend Mark Howarth of Garden Aid donates 10% of his profit to funding projects aimed at helping the residents of Myukuntu, helping to provide much needed medicines, food, hospital equipment and school books which means that he really is helping two communities.

But it’s also a good time for reassessing our lives, making decisions that we’ve been postponing for too long and giving the old bricks and mortar a check over to make sure it’s in good nick. So here are a few of the local tradesmen and retailers who we trust with our homes - if you need work done then we’d say you can’t do better! Now put your feet up and relax until summer.

FIVE GOOD REASONS FOR HAVING YOUR CHIMNEY SWEPT REGULARLY 1. AVOIDING CHIMNEY FIRES At this time of year the fire service responds to large numbers of domestic chimney fires. Don't become another statistic. Regular sweeping drastically cuts down the risk of chimney fire. 2. AVOIDING SOOT FALLS Even a small amount of soot can create a whole load of mess resulting in big cleaning bills for carpets and upholstery. And if the opening of a stove door and the disturbance to airflow causes such a fall the result can be flames shooting out into the operators face. Better safe than sorry.

3. PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT Many modern solid fuel installations use flexible stainless steel liners within the existing brick chimney. Warranties on these liners are normally state which fuels you can use and how often you must have it swept. A typical liner that is not swept regularly burning smokeless fuel will have a life expectancy of as little as 3 to 5 years. Check your warranty to find your sweeping interval and what types of fuel your liner is suitable for. 4. TROUBLE SHOOTING A qualified Sweep will assess all aspects of your appliance and chimney system. He will be able to inform you of any problems and potential dangers, usually long before they become a major issue. 5. PEACE OF MIND Should you be unfortunate enough to suffer damage because of a chimney fire your insurance company will almost certainly want to know that you have taken precautions to avoid the chimney fire in the first place. A certified chimney sweep will issue you with a sweeping certificate that insurance companies recognise as proof that your chimney has been swept to the national standard. So there you go. Look after your chimney and it will look after you in return. It’s got to be good value!

We’ve been pretty lucky up to now but according to the forecasts things are about to change so if you haven’t taken cold weather precautions yet then now’s the time to do so. Best advice? Stay at home. Don’t unless you have to. Buy a box set and hibernate. But if you’ve got no choice but to drive? Well take some basic precautions to keep you as safe as possible. Check your lights, mirrors and windows are completely clear before you set off. Top your screen wash up and use a proper additive. Check your tyres for tread and pressures. Ensure that your radiator has the right anti freeze levels. Keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel at all times to avoid running out if caught in long delays in bad weather. Take care, stay warm and just try to remember that it’s only for six months or so and then we’ll see the sun again.

What is it like switching from Strictly Come Dancing training sessions, and the high of winning the show with Stacey Dooley, to taking on the role of Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages? It’s really exciting because I’ve wanted to do musical theatre for so long. I’ve talked about it quite a lot over the last couple of years, but everything has been very dance and Strictly focused, so when this opportunity came up I wanted to grab it with both hands. What made you want to be involved with Rock of Ages? I first saw the show in 2009 on Broadway, when I was in New York with Burn The Floor, and Rock of Ages was on the next street over. I just loved it and went back and saw it two or three more times on Broadway and then saw it again when it came to the West End. I’m a big fan! I’ve always been a massive rock fan anyway, and before I was on Strictly I used to fancy myself a bit of a rock star. I used to have long black hair and eye makeup and black fingernails and used to swan about thinking I was the Jim Morrison of the ballroom! How was the audition? I think it went well! It was a bit daunting to be auditioning as a musical theatre performer, rather than as a singer. I was in Dirty Dancing The Musical before but that was primarily a dancing role. However, the director and choreographer, Nick, has an amazing ability to make you feel immediately comfortable. I didn’t feel like I was being judged so I just went for it! Could you tell us a little about the show?

All set for a bit of villainy. Kevin Clifton as flamboyant megastar Stacee Jaxx

It’s the story of two wannabes that have headed to California to make it as stars, with the help of amazing 80s power rock songs. Drew wants to become a rock star, and Sherrie wants to become an actress. They both end up working at this bar, waiting tables and falling in love. However, in walks this guy Stacee Jaxx who is the front man of a rock band. He’s the over the top, flamboyant megastar that all the girls want to be with and all the men want to be but at the same time he’s a bit of a villain – he’s pretentious and self obsessed, thinking he’s God’s gift to everything and ultimately he disrupts everyone else’s lives!

Rock Of Ages opens at the Auditorium from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th February and it promises to be a great show! We got to talk with the star of the show and winner of Strictly 2018, the one and only ....

Kevin Clifton Will it be quite fun playing someone a bit villainous?

large amounts of air quite quickly and from quite low down.

Oh yeah. I can definitely tap into the pretentious nature of him – I think I used to be a bit like that, thinking I was a rock star when I was just a ballroom dancer, everyone goes through that sort of phase a bit though! I used to think I was really rock’n’roll when I am the least rock’n’roll person in the world!

What was your first experience of musical theatre?

What are you doing to prepare for the role? I’m taking singing lessons to make sure my voice is strong enough to sing the role, particularly to be able to maintain it. It’s one thing to be able to sing in an audition but it’s another to do eight shows a week and belt out these amazing 80s tracks. Do you have a favourite song you look forward to performing? My first big song is Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive, that’s Stacee’s big moment and I love that song. It’s his big opening in the show and you’ve really got to come on and make a massive impact with the audience, really get them going and show what kind of character Stacee is. It should be fun! What are the challenges of performing this style of music? I’ve spent a lot of time learning how to breathe differently as a singer than I do as a dancer actually. As dancers we take shallow, short bursts of air as we move, whereas when you’re singing and hitting these big notes you want to take in

Do you have a go-to karaoke tune?

My karaoke song is Are You Gonna Be My Girl? by Jet. I love doing that at karaoke but I used to really scream it out and not be able to talk afterwards!

One of my earliest memories is me and my sister sat in front of the TV watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. We used to get the fire guard from the fireplace and put it in front of us, pretending it was the car. We would sit there one behind the other singing! We used to get my Dad’s snooker cue out of the garage and do Me Ol’ Bamboo! When we were really young we came down to London to watch Cats and I remember being so blown away by the whole spectacle of it all. I remember sitting there and thinking this is amazing. Mum and Dad bought us the soundtrack on cassette, and I used to sit and listen to it all the time.

Have you ever been given a piece of advice, or some words of wisdom that have stuck with you?

You’ve toured before with various shows, is it something you enjoy, or do you find it a challenge?

Finally, what can audiences expect when they come to see you in Rock of Ages?

I love it actually. I don’t have a problem with tour life, I quite enjoy it and find it exciting. When you’re on tour with a cast you really get to know them and you build a sense of family. It all feels like a bit of adventure. Do you have any ‘must-have’ items you take with you? My podcast app on my phone, I’m constantly listening to podcasts on my phone, lots of motivational ones. My iPad too, so I can catch up on Match of the Day and stuff!

I can’t remember who said it to me, but I took it on board, “it’s not about doing nothing wrong, it’s about doing something magical”. I think people make the mistake of thinking to do a good performance they’ve got to be technically perfect, but there are some brilliant performers who can hold a crowd in the palm of their hands but they’re not always necessarily the best dancers, singers or actors. However, they can create magic and make people feel something.

Don’t expect ‘Kevin from Grimsby’ as they call me on Strictly Come Dancing! It’s me in a completely different light, probably being a bit raunchier than you’re used to! I’m going to look completely different, but it will be a lot of fun and you should expect to have an amazing time. It certainly sounds like it. We’re looking forward to it already. See you there!
