THERE’S ALWAYS LOTS TO DO AT THORP PERROW There’s lots to do for all the family at Thorp Perrow. Covering 100 acres, the Arboretum boasts one of the largest collections of shrubs and trees in the North of England. The Bird of Prey and Mammal Centre offers fascinating flying demonstrations and the chance to meet meerkats, wallabies and Shetland sheep. There are seasonal trails, a fantastic adventure playground for the kids, open air concerts and expert led tours and walks, and when you’ve worked up an appetite there’s a licensed tearoom with a mouth watering selection of cakes. Sounds like just the place for a perfect day out. Have fun!

Bagpipes with attitude and drums with a Scottish accent, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers fusion of traditional Scottish music and rock/pop anthems, which they proudly call Bagrock, is a genuinely unique experience. They were the winners of the BBC TV talent show When Will I Be Famous and have performed at BBC proms in Hyde Park, T in the Park and major sporting events including the Rugby World Cup. Now they’re bringing the show to Louth Town Hall on Saturday 11th May and that’s a night not to be missed. For more MAY information and tickets go to www. louthtownhall.co.uk

In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live

Dinosaur World Live Brings The Jurassic Era To Grimsby Auditorium Every child loves dinosaurs and a fantastic new show on its way to Grimsby Auditorium in May will give your kids the chance to see what they were really like. Dinosaur World Live features Miranda, the daughter of palaeontologists, who grew up surrounded by dinosaurs on a far away tropical island somewhere off the coast of South America.

Using stunning puppetry to bring life like dinosaurs to the stage, the show presents a host of impressive prehistoric creatures including everyone’s favourite carnivorous giant, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, along with a Giraffatitan, Microraptor, Segnosaurus and Triceratops. If you’re looking for something unique and exciting to do with the family, then this is for you! It’s entertaining and educational and each performance is followed by a meet and greet where audience members have the opportunity to meet some of the dinosaurs in person. Dinosaurs Live is on Wednesday 22nd to Thursday 23rd May. Tickets are available now via the Auditorium website at www. grimsbyauditorium.org.uk

The family are in real danger as the threat of the Third Reich looms. Right from the beginning, with our sublime nuns’ chorus, through to Doh-a Deer and The Lonely Goatherd, the show is packed with some of the best loved of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s numbers. Occasional supergroup The Rutles - led by ex-Bonzo Neil Innes and drummer John Halsey will be bringing their Get Up And Go Again to the Grimsby Central Hall on Thursday 30th May. Widely known as the PreFab Four, The Rutles first arrived on our screens in 1975 via a sketch on Eric Idle’s Rutland Weekend Television. Three years later, the movie, All You Need Is Cash, expanded the satire and featured guest appearances by George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Bill Murray, Michael Palin, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, and many more. As a peer of The Beatles in the 1960s (The Bonzos appeared in the Magical Mystery Tour film and Paul McCartney produced a single for them), Neil Innes is well qualified to satirise the Fab Four and you can expect an evening of fine entertainment, featuring all the classic songs including I Must Be In Love, Cheese And Onions, Piggy in the Middle and of course Get Up and Go.

DO YOU NEED MORE DANCING IN YOUR LIFE? WHY NOT GIVE GRIMSBY MORRIS A TRY? Grimsby Morris have been dancing round North Lincolnshire (and frequently beyond), for more than fifty years, bringing music and happiness wherever they go and having a great time doing it. Their boar mascot,

Stanley, is a legend of the local folk scene. New members are always welcome so if you’re male, aged between 5 and 105 and have two feet, even if you think they’re both left feet, we can teach you to Morris

dance. Morris dancing is great exercise and great fun and gets you out in the open air or inside some great pubs (soft drinks only for under 18s). So If you’re even vaguely interested in having a go why not go along to one of their practices and they’ll get you capering in no time. Practice takes place most Mondays between 8pm and 10pm at Park Congregational Church Hall. Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. FINDING THE PERFECT HOLIDAY HOME FOR YOUR PET Claire at Barking Mad has the perfect job for any dog lover - arranging holiday homes for our four legged friends. An important part of her role is to make sure that the personality of the dogs is perfectly matched with that of the host. That means getting to know them both really well. It works so well many dogs establish long term relationships with their foster carers and visit them year after year.

HUMBER BELLES LADIES HARMONY CHORUS As well as the joy they receive from singing, Humber Belles support many local charities, including St Andrew’s Hospice and Women’s Aid. They also raised money for Breast Cancer Research with their ‘Sling a Bra and Sing’ evening. They are currently starting work on new repertoire so now would be a good time to pay them visit – you too might even get the urge to sing!

Sing for pleasure and let the music out! Why not come and join us! Do you love to sing and fancy a new challenge? Humber Belles Ladies Harmony Chorus welcomes prospective new members to their Thursday night rehearsals from 7.15pm -9.30pm at Wendover Hall, Humberston DN36 4HX. No formal musical knowledge is necessary. We can help you to decide which of the 4 harmony parts suits your voice the best and then provide you with good quality teach tracks to enable you to learn your chosen part. To arrange a visit please contact us by email. sing4parts@outlook.com or phone 01472 695836.

PEOPLES We’ve been hearing for years that the big superstores, (with a bit of help from the internet), have been killing off the traditional high street retailers, but this year there have been hints that perhaps the out of town bubble is about to burst. It seems that many people have grown bored with doing a huge once a week out of town shopping run and prefer to shop local and daily or every other day.

#propersh In recent weeks the major stores have announced that they’re making huge losses on their delicatessen and fresh food counters and they’re planning to start a programme of closures. Many retail analysts are now predicting a resurgence of the kind of niche retailers that made the high street a great place to shop. So in our next issue we’re planning a celebration of proper shops and we’re looking for butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, fishmongers (they don’t just sell fish, they mong it), greengrocers, toy shops and hardware stores, plus lots of others, to come on board and join us in a feature celebrating the best of specialist shops.

the power of the

t’s coming up for 13 years ago now that Chung Yeung opened the Oriental Express buffet in the former Bird’s Nest Cafe by the boating lake. The new venture was an immediate hit, immensely popular with locals and holidaymakers alike, with its sleek modern interiors and wide range of delicious Chinese and Indian dishes. Of course a lot of us dabble with Chinese cuisine at home but somehow it never tastes the same so we asked Chung to let us in on the secret of how to cook great Chinese food. “That’s easy,” he said. “It’s fresh quality ingredients, care and attention to detail and

the power of the wok. It needs to be so hot that when the ingredients hit the oil, the heat is sustained throughout the whole cooking process. In our kitchen we use fan assisted turbo gas woks for that special wok aroma.” So there you go and in the absence of a turbo wok in our home kitchen we think that in future we’ll leave it to the experts and head down to Oriental Express for our stir fry. We’ll see you there.

NATIONAL NUMERACY DAY ADDS UP TO MATHS EXCELLENCE Even if you hated maths at school there’s no doubt that a good grasp of how numbers work is a big help in many walks of life. National Numeracy Day is on the 15th of May this year and it’s all about recognising that numbers play a big part in all our lives and helping people to sharpen their skills and build their confidence. On the website, www. numeracyday.com you’ll find quizzes to test your own numeracy and if you’re a confident MAY mathematician there’s the chance to get involved in spreading the word. It all adds up to lots of numerical fun.

E

very parent wants their child to do well at school but sometimes it can feel like we just pack them off to school each day and hope for the best. It’s difficult to know what practical help you can give them to ensure that they reach their full potential but one practical step that can work wonders is to enrol them in the Kumon programme. Kumon originated in Japan and is now a wordwide educational phenomenon. The Grimsby Centre is at Healing Village Hall and is run by Sarah Prior. The aim of the programme is to help students become advanced learners with positive attitudes to study by boosting their self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges and problems by themselves. Check out the Kumon website at www.kumon.co.uk for more information.

Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Sarah provides the guidance and encouragement that students need to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Of course Kumon are aware that every child is different and their programme is not a one size fits all system, nor is it a quick fix. Their individualised programmes allow students to progress at their own pace and in addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind set and skills for learning. Sessions take place between 3.30pm and 5.30pm with students dropping in for about twenty minutes, once or twice a week. If you’d like to help your child reach their full potential give Sarah a call on 01472 884104

About Cancer Research UK Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Their pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has helped save millions of lives. Cancer Research UK receives no funding from the government for its life-saving research. Every step it makes towards beating cancer relies on vital donations from the public. The charity has been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival in the UK double in the last 40 years.

Today, 2 in 4 people survive their cancer for at least 10 years. Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress so that by 2034, 3 in 4 people will survive their cancer for at least 10 years. Cancer Research UK supports research into all aspects of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses. Together with its partners and supporters, their vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. RACE FOR LIFE 5k AND 10k WILL BE OPEN TO ALL THE FAMILY THIS YEAR

P

EOPLE in Cleethorpes are being encouraged to get the year off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Meridian Park Showground on Sunday 19th May and whatever your fitness level there’s an event to suit you. We spoke to Kay Patchett, Cancer Research UK’s Cleethorpes Event Manager about what makes the Race for Life so special and she told us: “Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients access to the latest treatments. And you don’t have to be sporty or superfit to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.” The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Cleethorpes with people across North Lincolnshire and the whole of the UK and raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Taking part in our Race for Life events enables people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now. Race for Life events have been women only since they started, over 25 years ago but from this year onwards they will be open to men and children which means that anyone who has experienced the effects of the disease will be able to join in. Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. To enter Race for Life today visit raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

GARDEN AID CARING FOR TWO COMMUNITIES Age Care Development is a local charity which has built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of western Uganda, and especially with the community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young), to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. Even basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. Our good friend Mark Howarth of Garden Aid donates 10% of his profit to funding projects aimed at helping the residents of Myukuntu, helping to provide much needed medicines, food, hospital equipment and school books which means that he really is helping two communities.

Petrol: Make sure that you have enough for the journey and plan refuelling stops along the way to avoid mishaps. Oil: Check it when the engine is cold and the vehicle is level. Also check clutch, brake, and power steering fluids. Water: Radiator and windscreen washer bottles should be checked while parked on a level surface. Damage: Check bodywork, wheels and fixtures, including the mirrors. Ensure windows are clean inside and out. Electrics: Check all lights, indicators and hazards are in good working order and clean. Also test the horn. Rubber: Check tyre pressures and tread depth, and look for damage to the tyres and wheels and wiper blades. If all that’s sorted then you’re good to go. Have a great time and maybe send us a postcard from somewhere nice.

FROM

he Call Of The Wild Festival, which takes place between Friday 24th and Saturday 26th May promises to be something rather special, a proper head-banging rock, punk and metal fest right in the heart of the rolling potato lands of Lincolnshire. The organisers have brought together an impressive line up of exciting and hugely entertaining bands including our favourites The Wildhearts who’ll be bringing a mix of old and new when they headline the Saturday night on The Kilmister stage and Macclesfield’s finest, The Virginmarys, who headline on the Friday. The Sunday night is brought to a thunderous close by legendary Swedish glam metallers Hardcore Superstar. There’ll be more huge rock hits than you’ll believe and there’s bound to be some fun with their 2006 hit We Don’t Celebrate Sundays. The line up has been strengthened recently by the addition of Welsh rockers Those Damn Crows and Hands Off Gretel, all the way from sunny West Yorkshire and well known in the Grimsby area for their regular appearances at The Yardbirds. I also ended up parked next to them at Camden Rocks last year. With three stages and plenty of great music on each it promises to be a fine weekend and with day tickets starting at £30 for the Friday and £40 on the Saturday and Sunday it’s great value too. There’s camping and glamping, great food, children’s entertainment, a craft fair and reenactments taking place too so you’re guaranteed a great weekend even if you go off music all of a sudden. As if. MAY MAY For more information go to www.callofthewildfestival. co.uk and get your tickets for what should be one of the musical highlights of the year. You can also get details through the Lincolnshire Showground website at www.lincolnshireshowground.co.uk.
