Craig David brings the TS5 party experience to Market Rasen
T
here aren’t many people who could throw a party in their apartment that would be so popular it would become a global brand, but one man who can (and did) is Craig David and he’s bringing the TS5 show to Market Rasen Racecourse on Saturday 17th August as part of the Jockey Club Live series.
The TS5 brand began life in Craig’s Miami apartment and grew organically into a thousands-strong party around the legendary Ibiza Rocks pool. Last year every single party sold out in advance and it’s off to a similar start for its return in summer 2019. The really incredible thing is that it changed clubbing, turning the whole Balearic hedonism concept on its head from all-night clubbing to all-day. Craig is looking forward to playing Market Rasen because he played Newmarket and Aintree last year, he can’t wait to bring the noise back to the final furlongs. As Craig himself describes it -“The feeling and passion from the racing crowds was amazing and I can’t wait to do it all again this year!
I love watching and playing all sports, but my biggest passion is Southampton FC, and one day soon they’ll be playing in Europe up there with the best where they belong, I have no doubt of that.” Having sold over 15 million albums, achieving 16 Top Ten hits and multiplatinum status in more than 20 countries, Craig has packed a lot into his career - but staggeringly it’s 20 years since he burst on to the scene with Artful Dodger and Rewind, the earth-shattering hit that essentially made speed garage a thing. It’s also 20 years since his subsequent debut solo album Born To Do It. “I am so blessed to not only have amazing fans but to have worked with some very talented people in my career. Working with the Artful Dodger guys was life changing for me and I have amazing memories every time the intro to that track comes on. I hadn’t realised it was that long ago, it seems like yesterday to me.” And it’s not all about the history of course, as Craig’s new album last year, The Time Is Now, was his fifth UK top 10 long player, hitting number 2 in the UK chart. Reality Royalty Brendan Sheerin To Star In This Year’s Auditorium Panto Aladdin
G
rimsby Auditorium have announced that this year’s panto will be Aladdin and the starring role of emperor Confucius Pong will be taken by none other than coach trip reality royalty Brendan Sheerin who will be swapping control of warring holidaymakers for a more exotic role to lead the glittering pantomime cast on the a Coach Trip through old Peking. The Leeds born entertainer and veteran travel expert became a household name as host on Channel 4's hit reality programme Coach Trip and Celebrity Coach Trip and he’s currently in Spain shooting the new series of Coach Trip and Celebrity Coach Trip, which will be aired later this year. He has featured in the popular series, since it first broadcast on Channel 4 back in 2005, including all the spins offs.
We are looking forward to seeing the international travel guru’s famed big personality, charm and wit on the Grimsby Auditorium stage! We spoke to Brendan soon after the announcement and asked him if he was looking forward to visiting Grimsby and he told us – “I’m delighted to be performing in the Grimsby Auditorium pantomime this winter, also looking forward to exploring the local area and its coastal heritage. But, what I’m really looking forward to is indulging in some good old fashioned East coast fish and chips, meeting the fine people of Grimsby along the way. So where can I find the best fish and chips then?” Answers on a postcard, but not to us. The show also stars Robert Aitken as Aladdin, Charlotte Maclachlan as Princess Jasmine, Ian Norton as Widow Twankey and Stuart Wade, (Biff from Emmerdale), as her son Wishee Washee. Aladdin is produced by Three Bears Productions, who staged last year’s hit pantomime Beauty and the Beast, which broke pantomime box office records and tickets are already on sale. Moonsongs The Peoples chats to poet Josie Moon about her current tour and plans for the future The Peoples: You obviously have tremendous enthusiasm for poetry. What makes it a special art form for you? And what can it offer to communities and individuals?
A Requiem was inspired by a cold wet night in November just before the annual remembrance commemoration. It was 2017 and there was much anticipation heading towards the centenary of the end of WW1. I had many questions about how meaningful a commemoration can be when there is so much global conflict, so much warfare and suffering raging everywhere. I had an idea that a war requiem raising questions about the perpetuity of war would be a bold project. So I asked Pat McCarthy and Alan Barnes if they wanted to do it and they said yes. It's been very challenging and moving to write.
JM: For me poetry is the writing medium in which I can best find my voice and explore the ideas that interest me. I think Coleridge was right when he said poetry is the best words put into the best order. In our local area I have seen over the past couple of years how poetry has built a community, a fellowship of writers who trust and support each other and who have grown together and as artists in their own right. And what sort of reaction have you been getting from audiences? We've had some great guests here in Grimsby over the past year. Our current program ends in July with a showcase performance from the Hull Women of Words collective. The plan is to launch a new poetry initiative in the autumn with our local writers front and centre. There are poets I'd like to bring to Grimsby in 2020 as we've built a great reputation for hospitality and enjoyable events. I'd also like to thank the local poets and audience who've made Best Words and Words and Pictures so joyous and exciting over this past year. It's been truly collaborative and a real shared experience and I am proud of everyone who has taken part. And finally, how did you feel about the appointment of Simon Armitage as poet laureate? I think it was a good decision. He is a humane, urbane and decent human being. And his work is accessible but also learned and deeply felt. I think he will prove excellent in this role. Thanks for your time, we know how busy you are. Best of luck with all of your projects.

Super easy and delicious summery crab cakes Ingredients: 750g cooked brown crab meat 300g mashed potato four spring onions, chopped 1 egg 50g plain flour 100g breadcrumbs oil (for frying, optional) Watercress Tartare sauce Method Mix the crab meat with the mashed potato and spring onion. Refrigerate for 30 minutes then shape into four roundish shapes. Whisk the egg.
Dust the cakes with flour and shallow fry in oil over a medium heat for about 5 minutes each side or until
golden brown. Serve with pinches of watercress and a dollop of tartare sauce. Method
Salmon and pea frittata Ingredients: 85g cooked salmon 4 eggs 1 tbsp milk

salt and coarse black pepper 1/2 onion, finely chopped 50g chorizo, peeled and sliced 2 tsp olive oil 1 large potato, cooked and sliced 50g Cheddar cheese, grated 100g frozen peas
Beat the eggs with the milk, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Heat the grill to medium. In a medium-sized frying pan, fry the onion and chorizo in the oil over a low heat. Add the sliced potatoes and cook for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onion is soft. Take the pan off the heat, and pour off any excess fat from the chorizo. Stir in the egg mix, cheese and add the fish and peas. Return to a low heat for 10-12 minutes until all but the very top of the frittata is set. Flash the fritatta under the grill until golden. Alternatively try adapting the recipe to replace the salmon with crab, crayfish, langoustines or lobster. Serve with a lovely fresh salad of mixed leaves, including rocket and endive.

THE GROVE CARE HOME HOSTS A SUCCESSFUL ANTIQUES VALUATION DAY

are Home Open Day, held on Friday 8th June, was a great success at The Grove Care Home in Waltham. The residential care home hosted an antiques valuation day with local people, residents and family members bringing their car boot finds and family heirlooms for valuation. Visitors to the home enjoyed refreshments, home made ice creams and a tour of the home and its facilities. Terry Dean of Unique Auctions in Lincoln gave a talk about his time in the antique trade and some of the amazing finds he's made over the years. Terry has featured on BBC1's Antiques Road Trip and has many years of experience in the trade. Terry and team then spent the afternoon valuing many items from candlesticks to jewellery and paintings. One of the first to have their items valued received a £100-£200 valuation for a necklace found for £3 in a charity shop! 102-year-old Molly, a resident at The Grove took pieces from her Clarice Cliff coffee set to be valued and was delighted with the £125 valuation. “I’m pleased with that” Molly said, “it’s quite chipped, but then we’ve enjoyed using over the years so that’s the important thing”. Everyone had a great afternoon and residents loved the opportunity to welcome local people to their home. "We had a great day." said Manager Kelly Lofts. “The sun came out and we made the most of the Bensley’s homemade ice cream van that came to us for the day too." The event was part of National Care Home Open Day an annual event designed to encourage homes to open their doors to celebrate a different them each year, with the key values of friendship, making connections and celebrating older and vulnerable people. armed forces day 2019
It was the hottest day of the year so far but that didn’t stop several thousand people lining the streets of Cleethorpes to pay respect to members of our armed forces, veterans of previous conflicts and to the many young people whose service in the cadet forces of the armed services confers so much good, both on them and on their community. The highlight of the day’s events was the appearance of the mounted section of the Royal Lancers Association, who looked magnificent on their black chargers as they made their salute in front of Knoll House but there was plenty going on elsewhere including an air display featuring famous aeroplanes like the P47 Thunderbolt, Tucano and a twilight display from the FireFlies Aerobatic Display Team. It was certainly a day to remember so congratulations go to all those who participated and organised the event and we look forward to many more in the future!

GARDEN AID CARING FOR TWO COMMUNITIES Age Care Development is a local charity which has built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of western Uganda, and especially with the community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young), to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. Even basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. “Running has changed my life. Now I’m hoping it can help me do the same for others!” The Peoples talks to Taiko drummer and runner Emma Middleton about her plans for the London Marathon.

Sometimes running is about more than just running. It can be about fitness, or weight loss, or testing yourself by pushing to the limits. Or it can be about raising money for good causes or being a good role model for your kids. Sometimes it’s just about getting out of the house and into the fresh air. Usually there’s a mixture of motivations at play, particularly when someone goes from being a non athlete to being a regular participant, doing ten milers and multi peak challenges like they were walks in the park. One person who has used running as a way of changing their life and raising cash for a great cause is our good friend Emma Middleton, Taiko Drummer, Youth Theatre organiser and now committed runner who has completed several remarkable challenges and is now setting her sights on the London Marathon 2020. We spoke to her and asked her what made her want to take up such a demanding discipline and effect so big a change in her life. The Peoples: Hi Emma. Tell us a bit about yourself. Emma: I run an organisation called Humber Taiko and I perform and teach Taiko drumming as well as other music & creative projects in the area. Taiko is Japanese style drumming which incorporates catchy rhythms, voice & choreography so it has helped me become
fairly fit. I work in local schools, for the music service, at international festivals and I also perform - we have performed across Europe and I’m performing in Portland, Oregon this summer for a huge Taiko Festival. I have a very full on and active job so all of my training recently has enabled me to keep up with it all, as well as parenting! The Peoples: We've watched with interest on social media as your running career has developed from tentative beginnings to exuberant enthusiasm to fully fledged obsession. How long have you been running now and what got you started? Emma: I started in 2014, I’d never run before in fact I was the kid at school that would always have a note to excuse me from PE! I have a few friends from years back who have found it very surprising that I’m actually running now and enjoying sports & fitness, it’s quite funny how things change. I went down south to train with a company called Taiko Meantime whose members are all into fitness and endurance, they run every morning of the training so I knew that I would have to run with them. I did a couch to 5K plan but I only dared run late at night when no one could see me as I wasn’t confident. I managed to do all of the runs with the guys at the training though so I achieved my goal and tried to keep my running going after that. I did break my leg at one point though so had to put it all on hold at one point.
The Peoples: What has been your biggest achievement so far? Emma: I said I was never interested in running further than 5K as I get bored but my ego soon got the better of me! The North Lincs Half Marathon in May was my first Half Marathon and I loved it so I ran the Doncaster Half Marathon a month later and shaved about 5 minutes off my time. The Yorkshire Three Peaks was an incredible achievement due to my awful fear of heights but it was great training to get strength and stamina in my legs. I also run with friends at sunrise in Cleethorpes several times a week which I think is an achievement every time we do it!
The Peoples: What made you want to do it? Is there a tradition of running in your family? Emma: My dad ran the London Marathon in 2004 so I think he’s pretty pleased I’m giving it a go. I have vague memories of finding it quite amusing that he was going to run but I’m ashamed to say I actually didn’t pay much attention to him doing it at the time! My uncle ran with him dressed as Bob The Builder - there is no way I could get through a marathon in a huge costume so hats off to him for that. I will say that I’m pretty sure I’ll beat both their times though haha! My 9 year old daughter is far too cool to get too excited for me but I’m going to guess she actually is quite proud! I’ve heard her telling people about it and she has asked to go running with me. The Peoples: Is it something you completely enjoy or is working through the pain an important part of why you do it? Emma: I gradually started to enjoy it in the early days but then started to find it quite tricky and other than the Taiko training I never ran with anyone else. I joined the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Biggest Losers Fitness group because I wanted to get stronger. The group is run by Mike Burton who started the project as a weight loss competition, they raise loads of money for charity. The group has developed into a huge Health & Wellbeing team. Loads of people at the group met up for running regularly and I was encouraged to join in last summer, I soon got back into it and got fully hooked in a completely new way! I lost quite a bit of weight by training with the group too so I was soon running faster & further thanks to all of the brilliant coaches, mentors and friends at the group. We have taken on awesome challenges together such as the Lunacy 10K - an adventure & obstacle race, as well as the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge recently which was the hardest thing I’ve ever done (I am terrified of heights!)

The Peoples: And your long term goal? Emma: My long term goal is just to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle but I’ve been focused on the 2020 London Marathon to keep me going. I don’t know what happens after that. I’m aware that my running could be cut short at any moment if I get an injury or if I just get fed up! I think my back up will be learning to swim well, I’m not very good! So far I’ve been lucky that my body has been happy to run, I’ve had regular training and sports massages to check everything is ok. Back in April I was watching clips from the London Marathon and then just decided I had to do it, me and my partner both signed up for the ballot but then we decided to pursue charity places and just fully commit to it. He is running for the Meningitis Research Foundation in memory of his friends and I am running for Whizz-Kidz as I was so keen to support a children’s charity. The Peoples: What makes Whizz-Kidz a special charity for you? Emma: I applied to lots of different charities, I work in schools, we are keen on making music accessible for all children, and I wanted to raise money for children. I’ve been offered a couple of charity places but Whizz-Kidz actually phoned me after my application and we had a great talk about all of the work they do, transforming the lives of disabled children. I have found that by blogging and using social media I can connect with other runners, those who have done similar challenges and people who inspire me, motivate me. It’s a great way to share the journey. The Peoples: Well best of luck from us (not that we think that there’s a lot of luck involved) and we’ll be keeping an eye on your progress throughout the year and right up to next year’s main event!
The UCI Road World Championships 2019 Come To Harrogate
Harrogate will be celebrating the championships throughout the year with a season of events and celebrations including the Harrogate Welcomes the World programme which will countdown to the championships with colour and flair as the town prepares to share the glory of Harrogate with a global audience. Harrogate will be the centre of the sporting world in September 2019 when the best cyclists of the world travel to Yorkshire to compete for the highest accolade road cycling can bestow – the title of World Champion, and the iconic Rainbow Jersey that accompanies it. The Championships take place from 21st-29th September with races starting in towns and cities across Yorkshire, and every race will make its way around the county before heading to one finish line in Harrogate. Races will come to Harrogate through the towns of Boroughbridge, Masham, Pateley Bridge, Ripon and across the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and will include some of the most popular roads and climbs from the previous five years of elite cycle races in Yorkshire In Harrogate a challenging and technical 14km finishing loop will ensure that the racing is far from over for the riders, with sharp turns, steep climbs and plenty of opportunities for the race to be won, or lost before riders cross the line.

madness at market rasen
“It’s raining again ...” That got probably the biggest cheer of the evening although there was plenty more because Madness had come to all the way to Market Rasen and nobody was going to let a little bit of precipitation dampen their spirits. With a back catalogue of hits that includes favourites like Our House, Baggy Trousers and House Of Fun the boys are one of the most popular bands in the country and remarkably there are still six members of the classic Madness line up still playing together. Does this matter? It certainly seems so, because the band seem so at ease and happy in each other’s company on stage it feeds into the show, creating an atmosphere that’s seldom equalled by any other bands I’ve seen. Certainly the Rasen crowd, all fezzed up and nowhere to go but still dancing had a great time at what must surely be one of the most popular of the Jockey Club Live events that we’ve enjoyed in recent years. Next up is soul guru Craig David, who plays the racecourse on Saturday 17th August. It’s definitely not a show to be missed and tickets are available via www. thejockeyclub.co.uk.
