t’s not too often that we get genuine A-listers in town so it’s really exciting that this summer Cleethorpes Meridian Park will play host to UK Garage pioneer and multi-million seller, Craig David. The Southampton born singer has achieved a lot in his ten year career. With over 13 million record sales, 2 number ones, 14 top ten hits, huge success in America and sold out shows across the world, Craig David is one of the UK music scene’s most successful male solo artists, and somehow he has managed to achieve all this commercial success without ever losing his professional credibility. Years before Disclosure, Rudimental or Clean Bandit arrived on Radio 1, Craig brought everything from UK garage, to stripped back acoustics and electro-edged R&B to the UK charts. His 14 top 10 singles, include Fill Me In, 7 Days, Walking Away, What’s Your Flava, Hot Stuff (Let’s Dance), and the incredible duet with Sting, Rise And Fall. They established David as an indisputable commercial success, and proved that British urban music had the power to go pop. He’s also a UN Goodwill Ambassador was part of the celebrity Desert Trek team who walked 100km across the Northern Kenya desert to raise awareness and money for Comic Relief in February 2011. 2016 saw David make a return to the charts. His recent single, When The Bassline Drops, a collaboration with grime artist Big Narstie entered the Official UK Top 10 six weeks after release and has now sold over 300,000 copies, remaining in the top 40 singles chart for over 3 months. The Council’s decision to turn a car park into a designated traveller site has cast a shadow over the future of one of the town’s most important cultural amenities. We offered our friends at The Caxtons the space to explain why their venue must be saved.
HELP US SAVE OUR THEATRE
T
he 75th Anniversary of The Caxton Theatre is approaching and in that time our little theatre has seen many changes and faced many challenges. Mostly they have been the inevitable ones such as maintaining audience numbers, attracting new members, maintaining the building and ensuring we comply with all the rules and regulations related to the running of the theatre but our latest challenge could potentially bring about the demise of the theatre, ironically at a time when we are in our best position for some time, with audience numbers and membership increasing and our standards of performance consistently high. The threat we face comes from a surprising development which threatens the loss of our parking facilities. Our theatre is situated close to Riby Square, in an area of town that has become very run down and consequently unattractive. The on street parking is insufficient for our audiences but there are two car parks in Orwell Street, without which our patrons would have nowhere near the theatre to park. To enable our patrons to park their cars securely, and at no cost to them, we provide a security guard to patrol Orwell Street car park during main house productions. This car park has recently been ear marked as a potential stop over site for travellers and whilst we fully understand the need for such a site and the Council's obligation to provide one, the loss of this facility will
cause huge problems in this area, not only to the theatre but also to other local businesses.
It is not a suitable place for a stop over site, and irrespective of the harm the loss of car parking will cause to the local businesses, the unsuitability of the proposed site is something the traveller's local representative also feels strongly about. We are not alone in feeling the Council has chosen this site, out of the five possible options, as the one least likely to cause objection, given the area it is in. We understand a decision will be made on this matter in June and with your help we hope to be able to persuade the Council that Orwell Street is not the most suitable location and show them that taking the easy option, without prior discussion or even notice to the local community affected by the loss of the car park, is not the way to proceed. We have had meetings with our local councillors and have been canvassing the support of the general public and already have a petition with over one thousand signatures. It’s a great excuse to revisit a favourite novel or poem or maybe even do a little bit of writing yourself, and it doesn’t have to be too arduous. ollowing on from the success of the Armed Forces Day National Event in 2016 the organisers of the 2017 NE Lincolnshire event are hard to work to make it a weekend of colour, pageantry and celebration. The event will run from Friday 30th June until Sunday 2nd July with the traditional parade on the Saturday. It is also hoped to include a visit from the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight team and other celebrated aircraft. ou might expect the world of yarncrafts to be a bastion of traditionalism where nothing ever changed but in fact it's one of the most vibrant and up to the minute parts of our culture and in particular it's noticeable how sociable an activity knitting has become. There are lots of clubs and societies, knit and natters and classes and courses on offer and it's pretty clear that knitting has gone from being something that people did in the privacy of their own homes to something that is done in groups and among friends. Two important days in the social knitting calendar - Yarn Shop Day on Saturday 6th May and Knit In Public Day on Saturday 10th June - are on their way soon and together they show the extent of the change that has taken place in the sector and how well the shops in our area have risen to the challenge of the new knitting. Knit In Public Day is part of the Big Woolly Weekend (of which the other part is Yarn Bombing Day on Sunday 11th June so expect to wake up to some brightly decorated street furniture).
At A Good Yarn they’ll be marking Yarn Shop Day with competitions, mini trials, special offers, free patterns and goody bags. “We’ll be busy all day and it will be exhausting but a lot of fun. Hopefully we’ll see lots of new faces but also some old friends will come along to share their love of knitting”, says Kate Roberts. A Good Yarn will also be participating in Knit In Public Day with two events running from 11am until 3pm), one in Grimsby and one in Cleethorpes, both at branches of Riverhead Coffee, (Victoria Street and St Peter’s Avenue respectively). Time To Get Your Head Down For National Bed Month!
M
arch is National Bed Month, a time to think about the importance of sleep and to consider if we are getting enough. Good sleep is essential for keeping us healthy and well but lots of people don’t get enough. So what can we do to make sure that we get the rest we need? The first essential step is to establish a healthy bedtime routine. Going to bed and getting up at the same time every day will help a lot, lowering stress and making it easier to nod off. You should also avoid naps, especially in the afternoon, and exercise every day. It doesn’t have to be a major workout. Even light exercise is better than no activity at all. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening. Eating spicy food can cause discomfort from indigestion that can make it hard to sleep. It is good to finish eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Wind down properly before you try to sleep. Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading.

Most importantly make sure you sleep on a suitable bed with good quality mattress and pillows. Your mattress should be comfortable and supportive. Le Tour de Yorkshire ANOTHER FANTASTIC RACE IN PROSPECT FOR 2017
F
or the past couple of years the Tour de Yorkshire has been one of the highlights of the sporting calendar, with more than 2 million spectators visiting the starts and finishes and lining the route and that looks set to continue this year when the third edition of the race takes place between 28th and 30th April, encompassing all four corners of the county and taking in Yorkshire’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Fountains Abbey and Saltaire. This year’s tour will be the biggest yet with a record 36 men’s and women’s teams competing and for the first time the number of women’s and men’s teams taking part will be the same. The event starts in Bridlington and the first stage covers 173 miles ending in Scarborough.
Day two runs from Tadcaster to Harrogate over 122.5km and the third and final day takes the riders from 194.5km from Bradford to Sheffield. If you haven’t visited the Tour before then you’ve missed out on some great entertainment. Spectators at the start of each stage get to see their heroes preparing for the day and the mechanics working hard on their bikes. There’s always a special buzz when the major stars are in the paddock area, and of course the finish line is always the place for drama and excitement. Smoked Haddock and Spinach Frittata Ingredients: 200g skinless smoked haddock 50g Cheddar cheese, grated 10 fresh chives, chopped 1 x 15ml spoon sunflower oil 50g bag baby spinach, washed 4 large eggs 50ml milk
Method: Cut the haddock into chunks. Beat the eggs with the milk and chives. Gently fry the haddock for 2 minutes, turning it over. Add the spinach and allow to cook for 3 minutes, until wilted. Preheat the grill to medium. Pour the egg mixture into the frying pan, and make sure it spreads evenly
around the fish and cook over a low heat for 3-5minutes, until egg is set around the edges. Sprinkle over the grated cheese and grill for a further 3-5min until the egg is cooked and cheese is golden and bubbling. Perfect for a summer lunch.

anagers and staff at The Grove Care Home in Waltham are delighted with their recent overall ‘Good’ rating following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission. During the unannounced inspection the CQC inspectors spoke to residents and family members, as well as members of staff. The report quoted a resident who spoke of the staff saying, “They’re lovely and kind”. Commenting on the approach staff took with her mother one relative said “Staff helped to build up her confidence and got her to take a few steps.” Adding “Staff are very persistent in making sure she takes her medication when it’s required. I am very happy and have no concerns”. Manager Amanda Griffiths said “I am very proud of the whole team here at The Grove Care Home. The report’s findings are testament to the excellent care they consistently deliver every day.”

Find The Mice At Immingham Museum There’s lots to see and do at Immingham Museum and now they’ve introduced new way of encouraging young visitors to look more closely at the exhibits. Hidden around the displays are several clockwork mice and children can have loads of fun finding them all. Immingham Museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. Try Low Maintenance Gardening - Get More Pleasure For Less Work

he perfect low maintenance garden has become one of the holy grails of gardening over the last few years and if you’re unable to get the most out of your patch, whether for reasons of health or age, or shortage of time then it may have the solution to your garden problems. No garden will ever be completely maintenance free of course but for most jobs there’s an alternative and easier way. Raised beds can make digging easier for example, weed suppressing membranes can help reduce the workload and look great when covered with a suitable mulch and choosing your plants carefully can reduce the amount of care and pruning required. Avoid having too many pots and containers - they need a lot of maintenance - and let the lawn grow a bit long. Maybe don’t collect the clippings. Maybe get someone in to do the mowing. You can also choose slow growing hedge plants like yew or plants that look good even when they’re a bit ragged, clematis and wisteria for example. Clever use of alternative surfaces like decking, tiles or gravel can also help to cut down on the amount of time needed to keep things looking smart. There are lots of styles and colours available and they can really brighten things up. Petrol: Make sure that you have enough for the journey and plan refuelling stops along the way to avoid mishaps. Oil: Check it when the engine is cold and the vehicle is level. Also check clutch, brake, and power steering fluids. Water: Radiator and windscreen washer bottles should be checked while parked on a level surface. Damage: Check bodywork, wheels and fixtures, including the mirrors. Ensure windows are clean inside and out. Electrics: Check all lights, indicators and hazards are in good working order and clean.
