Following his intuition all the way to Meridian Park this summer ....

CRAIG DAVID WITH SUPPORT FROM SIGMA MERIDIAN SHOWGROUND FRIDAY 14TH JULY 2017!

I

t’s not too often that we get genuine A-listers in town so it’s really exciting that this summer Cleethorpes Meridian Park will play host to UK Garage pioneer and multi-million seller, Craig David. The Southampton born singer has achieved a lot in his ten year career. With over 13 million record sales, 2 number ones, 14 top ten hits, huge success in America and sold out shows across the world, Craig David is one of the UK music scene’s most successful male solo artists, and somehow he has managed to achieve all this commercial success without ever losing his professional credibility. Years before Disclosure, Rudimental or Clean Bandit arrived on Radio 1, Craig brought everything from UK garage, to stripped back acoustics and electro-edged R&B to the UK charts. His 14 top 10 singles, include Fill Me In, 7 Days, Walking Away, What’s Your Flava, Hot Stuff (Let’s Dance), and the incredible duet with Sting, Rise And Fall. They established David as an indisputable commercial success, and proved that British urban music had the power to go pop. He’s also a UN Goodwill Ambassador was part of the celebrity Desert Trek team who walked 100km across the Northern Kenya desert to raise awareness and money for Comic Relief in February 2011. 2016 saw David make a return to the charts. His recent single, When The Bassline Drops, a collaboration with grime artist Big Narstie entered the Official UK Top 10 six weeks after release and has now sold over 300,000 copies, remaining in the top 40 singles chart for over 3 months. With the release of his first studio album in seven years, Following My Intuition, Craig is back out on the road this summer, playing major festivals and gigs up and down the country and he’ll be in Cleethorpes at the Meridian Showground on Friday 14th July with support from DJ and producer duo Sigma. It’s going to be a great night and definitely not one to be missed! For tickets go to www.seetickets. com, for more information go to the Meridian Park Facebook page.

The Council’s decision to turn a car park into a designated traveller site has cast a shadow over the future of one of the town’s most important cultural amenities. We offered our friends at The Caxtons the space to explain why their venue must be saved.

HELP US SAVE OUR THEATRE

T

he 75th Anniversary of The Caxton Theatre is approaching and in that time our little theatre has seen many changes and faced many challenges. Mostly they have been the inevitable ones such as maintaining audience numbers, attracting new members, maintaining the building and ensuring we comply with all the rules and regulations related to the running of the theatre but our latest challenge could potentially bring about the demise of the theatre, ironically at a time when we are in our best position for some time, with audience numbers and membership increasing and our standards of performance consistently high. The threat we face comes from a surprising development which threatens the loss of our parking facilities. Our theatre is situated close to Riby Square, in an area of town that has become very run down and consequently unattractive. The on street parking is insufficient for our audiences but there are two car parks in Orwell Street, without which our patrons would have nowhere near the theatre to park. To enable our patrons to park their cars securely, and at no cost to them, we provide a security guard to patrol Orwell Street car park during main house productions. This car park has recently been ear marked as a potential stop over site for travellers and whilst we fully understand the need for such a site and the Council's obligation to provide one, the loss of this facility will

cause huge problems in this area, not only to the theatre but also to other local businesses.

It is not a suitable place for a stop over site, and irrespective of the harm the loss of car parking will cause to the local businesses, the unsuitability of the proposed site is something the traveller's local representative also feels strongly about. We are not alone in feeling the Council has chosen this site, out of the five possible options, as the one least likely to cause objection, given the area it is in. We understand a decision will be made on this matter in June and with your help we hope to be able to persuade the Council that Orwell Street is not the most suitable location and show them that taking the easy option, without prior discussion or even notice to the local community affected by the loss of the car park, is not the way to proceed. We have had meetings with our local councillors and have been canvassing the support of the general public and already have a petition with over one thousand signatures. Please add your name to the petition, which can be accessed at Haines Watts, Hanover House, 117-119 Cleethorpe Rd, Grimsby DN31 3ET. You can find further information at www.caxtontheatre.com or via the Caxtons Facebook page.

I

t's always time for a party down at Twinkles Fancy Dress so when their 23rd anniversary came around it was bound to be a cause for celebration. To mark the occasion they're offering a 25% discount on hires to all their Facebook friends and they've got a whole host of new and super trendy costumes to choose from. The business began on Ward Street as a dress agency called Take That, but changed its name to Trendy Togs and moved to its present location at the foot of Isaac's Hill. That was at about the time that the 70s and 80s nights were taking off in Cleethorpes so they extended their range to include more and more fancy dress and they've never looked back! Favourite costumes are pop stars and cartoon characters but they’re always changing so keep your eyes on their famous window displays and we’ll wish a very happy 23rd to Kath, Melanie and Tiffany. See you same time next year for your 24th.

There’s a total of six official languages at the UN and each of the others (Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French and Spanish) have their own days too, so it’s all perfectly fair. It’s a great excuse to revisit a favourite novel or poem or maybe even do a little bit of writing yourself, and it doesn’t have to be too arduous. Go on treat yourself People can argue about most things. It’s what we’re good at. But if there’s one thing that unites the world more than most it’s the belief that the best food in the world is definitely, almost certainly, probably ..... CHOCOLATE. Nothing else comes close really and it’s high time that chocolate had some recognition in the form of a special day all of its own. Well now it does.

W

ho’d have thought that the humble seed of an unremarkable looking tree could have such an impact on the world? Cocoa has been cultivated for thousands of years and was first encountered by Europeans when Columbus seized a canoeful on his fourth voyage to the Americas in 1502. Nowadays the average Briton eats nearly 20lbs of the sweet stuff every year and you can even buy chocolate coated crisps! Why do we love it so much? Some scientists believe that chocolate consumption triggers brain waves which cause us to relax. Others think it just tastes good. Most of the world’s chocolate now comes from West Africa - and they need to produce a lot because it takes four hundred beans to make one pound of finished product. So make sure you treat yourself to a nibble or two on World Chocolate Day and if you’re looking for a special treat then remember that our friends at Sweet Indulgence have a huge selection on offer, including sugar and dairy free varieties, and of course lots of other classic sweets to really make your day.

YARNCRAFTS

Nowadays yarn crafts are social activities. So grab your wool and needles and let’s get

Knitting Together!

Y

ou might expect the world of yarncrafts to be a bastion of traditionalism where nothing ever changed but in fact it's one of the most vibrant and up to the minute parts of our culture and in particular it's noticeable how sociable an activity knitting has become. There are lots of clubs and societies, knit and natters and classes and courses on offer and it's pretty clear that knitting has gone from being something that people did in the privacy of their own homes to something that is done in groups and among friends. Two important days in the social knitting calendar - Yarn Shop Day on Saturday 6th May and Knit In Public Day on Saturday 10th June - are on their way soon and together they show the extent of the change that has taken place in the sector and how well the shops in our area have risen to the challenge of the new knitting. Knit In Public Day is part of the Big Woolly Weekend (of which the other part is Yarn Bombing Day on Sunday 11th June so expect to wake up to some brightly decorated street furniture).

At A Good Yarn they’ll be marking Yarn Shop Day with competitions, mini trials, special offers, free patterns and goody bags. “We’ll be busy all day and it will be exhausting but a lot of fun. Hopefully we’ll see lots of new faces but also some old friends will come along to share their love of knitting”, says Kate Roberts. A Good Yarn will also be participating in Knit In Public Day with two events running from 11am until 3pm), one in Grimsby and one in Cleethorpes, both at branches of Riverhead Coffee, (Victoria Street and St Peter’s Avenue respectively). IN THE KNOW

Time To Get Your Head Down For National Bed Month!

M

arch is National Bed Month, a time to think about the importance of sleep and to consider if we are getting enough. Good sleep is essential for keeping us healthy and well but lots of people don’t get enough. So what can we do to make sure that we get the rest we need? The first essential step is to establish a healthy bedtime routine. Going to bed and getting up at the same time every day will help a lot, lowering stress and making it easier to nod off. You should also avoid naps, especially in the afternoon, and exercise every day. It doesn’t have to be a major workout. Even light exercise is better than no activity at all. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening. Eating spicy food can cause discomfort from indigestion that can make it hard to sleep. It is good to finish eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Wind down properly before you try to sleep. Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading.

Brigg Beds Your bed isn’t just the place where you sleep - it’s where you finally unwind after a long day. It should be welcoming and comfortable, lulling you easily into slumber and helping you to forget your worries. If your bed isn’t doing any of these things, it’s probably time for a change. But which bed is just right for you? There are lots of factors to be considered including size, springing and hardness, but

25

If you have trouble sleeping, avoid electronics before bed or in the middle of the night. If you can’t sleep, go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. It is best to take work materials, computers and televisions out of the sleeping environment. Next you should evaluate your room to see if it’s suitable for sleeping in. Your bedroom should be cool and free from any disturbing noise. This includes a bed partner’s sleep disruptions such as snoring. Consider using blackout curtains, eye shades, ear plugs, white noise machines, dehumidifiers, fans and other devices. Most importantly make sure you sleep on a suitable bed with good quality mattress and pillows. Your mattress should be comfortable and supportive. If you’re in any doubt about what type of bed and mattress you need ask an expert like our friends at Brigg Beds. They’ll be glad to advise you about what’s available to suit you exactly. Life expectancy is about ten years for most good quality mattresses. Have comfortable pillows and make the room attractive and inviting for sleep but also free of allergens that might affect you. If you’re still having trouble sleeping, don’t hesitate to speak with your doctor. You may also benefit from recording your sleep in a Sleep Diary to help you better evaluate common patterns or issues you may see with your sleep or sleeping habits. Sweet dreams and keep counting those sheep!

fortunately at Brigg Beds they don’t just have a vast range of beds, mattresses and bedroom furniture - they’ve got years of experience too! Their staff are happy to leave you to browse at your leisure but if you’re not sure about which bed is right for your needs you can be sure that they’ll give you advice you can rely on. Their aim is help their customers to find the bed that suits their needs perfectly so that they’re sure of a great night’s sleep. Sweet dreams!

Le Tour de Yorkshire ANOTHER FANTASTIC RACE IN PROSPECT FOR 2017

F

or the past couple of years the Tour de Yorkshire has been one of the highlights of the sporting calendar, with more than 2 million spectators visiting the starts and finishes and lining the route and that looks set to continue this year when the third edition of the race takes place between 28th and 30th April, encompassing all four corners of the county and taking in Yorkshire’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Fountains Abbey and Saltaire. This year’s tour will be the biggest yet with a record 36 men’s and women’s teams competing and for the first time the number of women’s and men’s teams taking part will be the same. The event starts in Bridlington and the first stage covers 173 miles ending in Scarborough.

Day two runs from Tadcaster to Harrogate over 122.5km and the third and final day takes the riders from 194.5km from Bradford to Sheffield. If you haven’t visited the Tour before then you’ve missed out on some great entertainment. Spectators at the start of each stage get to see their heroes preparing for the day and the mechanics working hard on their bikes. There’s always a special buzz when the major stars are in the paddock area, and of course the finish line is always the place for drama and excitement. So if you’re looking for a great day out over the bank holiday weekend you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Tour de Yorkshire. For more information visit www.letour.yorkshire.com

FINE LOCAL FOODS Hundreds of local exhibitors will be joining the action at the Lincolnshire Showground for the return of the much-loved Lincolnshire Show on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd June, to celebrate the best of rural Lincolnshire with a mixture of entertainment, food, shopping, music and farm life. Attractions include Broke FMX, the UK’s top ranked freestyle motocross riders who will be jumping up to 35 feet in the air whilst pulling acrobatic stunts over 100 feet gaps on both days of the event. A new attraction is the machinery parade, Man and Machines in Motion. The narrated display will demonstrate how farmers use machinery in modern farming, showing off the newest and latest machinery from harvesters to mowers. Advance tickets are £19 for adults, children are £6 and under fives go free. Family tickets, admitting two adults and up to three children are priced at £40. Car parking is free on both days. Go to www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk for more information and tickets.

INDEPENDENCE

“The most important thing is to ensure the independence and dignity of our clients.”

I

f you’ve ever had to search for residential care for a relative then you’ll know how stressful and worrying the process can be. It’s hard to know where to start and how to make a decision but we’d recommend that you put The Grove Care Home in Ings Lane, Waltham at the top of your list of premises to visit. Nestled in leafy Waltham, The Grove offers both comfort and independence for residents. It has 52 well appointed rooms each with an ensuite walk-in shower and well equipped kitchenette to allow maximum independence. Recently renovated throughout The Grove has a large, bright sitting room that looks out over extensive landscaped gardens and with its brightly coloured leather sofas you could mistake it for the reception area of a chic boutique hotel. The food is good too and relatives and other visitors are always welcome to join their loved ones for meals.

So what makes The Grove such a special place? For recently appointed manager Amanda Griffiths it’s the excellence of her staff and the contribution of the home’s many dedicated volunteers that makes the difference. “When I arrived one of the nicest surprises I had was the level of the staff commitment to caring” she explains. “And we’re very lucky to have so many volunteers. Many are relatives of past residents who are fond of The Grove and have chosen to keep coming in. It’s that kind of place – somewhere where people build new, happy memories.” “The most important thing, for myself and for the staff, is to ensure the independence and dignity of our clients. We also positively encourage visitors at any time of day, no need to make an appointment. That’s because we know that this is a good place and we don’t worry at all about surprise visitors.” If you’d like to look around The Grove then feel free to pop in for a chat. You’ll always be made welcome and they’d relish the chance to show you around.

Create Space And Order By Decluttering Your Storage! We all live cluttered lives - too much stuff and too few places to keep it all - and often our furniture does little to help. Standard cabinets can make for inefficient use of space. Shelves that have been installed by the builder are often spaced too far apart, leaving wasted space. One answer may be to add versatile expandable shelving. A free-standing stacking expandable shelf will give you two shelves, where before you only had one. When organising cabinets try and make your packets easily accessible, group similar items together in small bins that are see through, for quick identification. Canned food in a cupboard can often be forgotten because they have been stored at the back and are out of your view. Choose a tiered shelf organiser that provides you with a full view of your canned goods. Don't neglect the wasted space on the back of kitchen cupboard doors. Racks designed to fit onto the back of a door will provide you with useful storage space. For great ideas about creative storage visit www.theholdingcompany.co.uk and you’ll have all your stuff stashed away in no time and there’ll be lots of empty space for you to fill by going out and buying even more stuff. Say Hello To Lagom - It’s The New Scandinavian For Stylish Living

L

ast year saw many of us striving to reach the pinnacle of cosiness, by buying into the Scandinavian trend Hygge. Now there's an even better, more sustainable and gratifying lifestyle that we will all want a slice of in 2017. Lagom translates to “not too much, not too little,” and the idea is to be frugal, fair and lead the perfectly balanced life, allowing you to fully appreciate the things you already have, and what you can do with them. It isn't about buying items to create a way of living, it's about making the most of what is already in your home, embracing both happiness and frugality. In this way you can avoid the shops and use a little creative flair and imagination to bring those old pieces back to life and to appreciate your décor once again.

Try Low Maintenance Gardening - Get More Pleasure For Less Work

T

he perfect low maintenance garden has become one of the holy grails of gardening over the last few years and if you’re unable to get the most out of your patch, whether for reasons of health or age, or shortage of time then it may have the solution to your garden problems. No garden will ever be completely maintenance free of course but for most jobs there’s an alternative and easier way. Raised beds can make digging easier for example, weed suppressing membranes can help reduce the workload and look great when covered with a suitable mulch and choosing your plants carefully can reduce the amount of care and pruning required. Avoid having too many pots and containers - they need a lot of maintenance - and let the lawn grow a bit long. Maybe don’t collect the clippings. Maybe get someone in to do the mowing. You can also choose slow growing hedge plants like yew or plants that look good even when they’re a bit ragged, clematis and wisteria for example. Clever use of alternative surfaces like decking, tiles or gravel can also help to cut down on the amount of time needed to keep things looking smart. There are lots of styles and colours available and they can really brighten things up. If it sounds like it might be for you then give one of our experts on these pages a call and see how they can help and with a bit of care and planning you can have a garden that looks great but takes less of you time and hard work, leaving more time to put your feet up and admire the view.
