A FITTING TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED MAKE GRIMSBY ‘GREAT’ The new Cartergate Underpass mural is unveiled to the public
A
rtists, councillors and representatives of many of the area’s most illustrious names gathered in Top Town to celebrate the official unveiling of the new Cartergate underpass mural. It’s the work of Creative Start volunteers led by founder and organiser Sam Delaney. Many of those involved have never participated in an arts project before and some took part as an element of a programme of abstinence therapy. The design features famous faces from the area including motorcyclist Freddie Frith, Channel swimmer Brenda Fisher, top tennis player Shirley Brasher, motorcycle racer Guy Martin, dancers Kevin and Joanne Clifton, actor Sir John Hurt and players from Grimsby Town FC. There are also street scenes from the Top Town area including the Minster and 1940s Chantry Lane. The artwork certainly makes a huge difference to what has been, in the past, a somewhat neglected part of the town and it’s yet another step along the road to the renewal of the Cartergate area. If you’re not a regular user we’d certainly recommend taking a visit to admire the mural, especially while there are still pieces from the recent Urban Arts Festival to enjoy on the walls of St James House. Salmon with Sweetcorn Custard Ingredients: 4 salmon fillets 4 fingerling potatoes, boiled and cut in quarters lengthwise 12 pearl onions, boiled until tender 200g broad beans, boiled and shelled 250g swiss chard or spinach, wilted Sweetcorn custard 3/4 cup sweetcorn 1/2 cup cream 1 eggs Champagne vinaigrette 125ml fish stock 50g flaked hot smoked salmon 60ml champagne vinegar 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 chopped shallot 1/4 tsp chopped garlic Salt and pepper 2 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped 2 tbsp chopped chives
Method:
Sear the fish, skin side down in a hot pan Simmer the corn and cream for 10 in a very little oil for approximately 3 minutes then puree with the eggs and minutes, turn over and cook on the salt and pepper and strain through a flesh side for 1 minute, all depending sieve. Pour into 4 buttered ramekins, on the thickness of the fillets. cook in a Bain Marie at 160c for 40 Place a mound of Swiss chard in minutes or until just set. the middle of the plates, top with Whisk together all the vinaigrette the potatoes then the salmon fillets. ingredients except tomatoes and Warm a little of the vinaigrette with chives. the beans, tomatoes, and onions and Add the tomatoes, chives, and flaked spoon around the plate. surprise - so it’s time for our annual reminder to get your car checked out - either by yourself or by a professional (see page right for our favourites). And if the weather turns nasty and you’ve got no choice but to drive? Well there are some basic precautions you can take that will help to keep you as safe as possible. Check your lights, mirrors and windows are completely clear before you set off. Visibility is crucial. Top your screen wash up and use a proper additive. Check the latest traffic and travel information before setting off on long journeys to help avoid getting stranded in freezing conditions. Stock up for emergencies and long delays in cold weather. Prepare a kit with basic items such as coats, blankets, water, food, atlas or satnav and a torch. Also remember to keep a fully-charged mobile phone and in-car charger to report breakdowns and emergencies if necessary. Wear comfortable, dry shoes for driving. Cumbersome, snow covered boots will slip on the pedals. Check your tyres for adequate tread
and correct pressures. Ensure that your radiator has the right anti freeze levels. Check your manual to find out whether you’re in need of a top up. Keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel at all times to avoid running out if caught in long delays in bad weather. Use an ice scraper and/or de-icer spray to clear a frozen windscreen rather than using hot water, which
can crack the windscreen. Use the blowers and air conditioning to clear condensation on the inside. When driving in snow, use a high gear to avoid wheel spin. If stuck, keep the wheels straight and move forwards and backwards gently to get traction. Take care, stay warm and just try to remember that it’s only for six months or so.
