e’ve had a fine time the past few weeks, researching and putting together our fish docks feature. We met a lot of nice people, got a lot of help and we learned a lot. We’ve also been out and about at gigs and events – congratulations to Jack Smith who had his locks shorn for charity and to Phil Stocks who made such a roaring success of BOG Fest. We’ve also been investigating the world of sweeping and finding out why keeping your chimney clean is not just a luxury - it’s a basic safety precaution.

In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live FROM THE VALLEYS TO THE WOLDS
SIR TOM JONES TO ROCK MARKET RASEN
I
YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HATS ON
t’ll be a big night for music fans in August when the legendary Welsh singer Sir Tom Jones makes his debut visit to Market Rasen racecourse to perform songs from his repertoire of hits that includes Kiss, Delilah, She’s A Lady and It’s Not Unusual. In a career spanning more than half a century Sir Tom has won many accolades including a BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, a Silver Clef Award for Lifetime Achievement and he was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in 2006. He has amassed thirty six top 40 UK hits and has a continued reputation as one of the world’s best vocalists, earning the nickname ‘The Voice’. Aptly, he has been a coach on BBC1’s The Voice since 2012. Sir Tom has always worked to remain contemporary. He’s sung country, soul, rock and blues and in the late 1990s he embraced the new wave of pop with his duets album, Reload, featuring performances with Cerys Matthews, Robbie Williams and many others. His most recent albums, 2010’s Praise & Blame and 2012’s Spirit In The Room have seen him branch out into gospel as well as covering songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. And if you’re in any way unconvinced then just check out You Tube for an amazing clip of Sir Tom singing with Janis Joplin on his TV show in the late 60s. Put simply, the man is music royalty. You should be there. For tickets go to the racecourse website at marketrasen.thejockeyclub.co.uk. To book via phone ring 0844 5793009.

It Is, It Is A Glorious Thing (to be a pirate king) Pirates Of Penzance at Whitgift Film Theatre live streamed from the English National Opera May 19th 2015 Review by Josie-Anne Gray I have to admit that I’ve been giddy with excitement looking forward to seeing this production over the past few weeks. I first saw Pirates when I was 19. It was at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and it gave me a longstanding love of this silly, clever opera. I was hoping not to be disappointed tonight and I was not. The Whitgift live streams are a wonderful opportunity for those of us in places just that bit too far from London and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden or The Coliseum to see these great productions. Ticket prices are a factor as well so the much reduced cost of £15 is a bargain. The Whitgift Film Theatre provides a comfortable and intimate venue and the streams give the theatre an opportunity to share great art and hopefully make some money for investment in the future. Mike Leigh’s set for the production is spectacular. It is huge, modern and bright painted in sea blues and pea greens with a great, jutting red pirate ship cutting
through at what looks like quite a precarious angle for the lively opening section that contains one of the show’s great songs I Am A Pirate King. Joshua Bloom gives this pirate king verve and humour. The glorious rich boom of his voice elevates the song to a truly joyous anthem, setting the vocal standard high. The singers with the greatest control and clarity in the opening are Bloom and Robert Murray as easily addled Frederic the apprentice. Rebecca de Pont Davies as Ruth is also spectacular in the opening with crystalline diction. I found her performance poignant and touching. As an older woman, cast out and deemed unlovable she is the shadow in a show of light and frivolity and Davies brought that very much to the fore in her performance. I wanted the Major General (Andrew Shore) to deliver his tricky show-stopper with panache but alas it seemed to outface him and he stumbled and was just behind the music throughout rendering this notoriously difficult patter song rather shambolic. He was much better in the second half where he seemed more comfortable in his role. Pirates has the silliest of plots and is famous for its humour, it paradoxes and its all round rollicking sense of fun. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the delicious With Catlike Tread which the company performed with gusto. If ever there was a song to lift the spirits then surely this is it. The second half truly belonged to the Sergeant of Police (Jonathon Lemalu) whose face was obscured by the most ludicrous comedy beard and whose paunch was so pronounced he looked in danger of toppling over but his delivery was faultless and joyously absurd. He gave his role all the burlesque delight it deserves and outshone everyone except the Pirate King, which is as it should be. In that long ago production in Newcastle, I remember being reduced to crying with laughter at the Sergeant of Police and having aching sides. The effect was not quite the same but his performance was wonderfully enjoyable. I tripped out of the theatre, not quite with catlike tread but certainly well entertained. If opera is not your thing or not something with which you are comfortable and familiar, then dipping your toe in the water with Gilbert and Sullivan is probably an excellent place to start. If you feel bold and fancy something a little darker and sexier then the Whitgift Film Theatre is streaming ENO’S new production of Carmen on Wednesday 1st July. If the trailer is anything to go by, you may need to lie down in a darkened room with a flannel on your head afterwards!

CARNIVAL

In 2012 the Cleethorpes Carnival Parade was officially over. Funding had disappeared and it looked as though the event would be consigned to history. Fortunately Young’s Seafoods had other ideas and they stepped in and rescued the event and the past few years have seen the parade go from strength to strength. We spoke to Marina Richardson, Marketing Controller at Young’s Seafoods about their role in saving the carnival. How long have you been involved with the Carnival? I’ve been with the team since Young’s started to support it in 2013. How did the Young’s link up with the carnival come about? The carnival began in the 1970s and is part of Cleethorpes and Grimsby’s heritage. At Young’s we believed that the carnival was vitally important to the local community and we didn’t want to see it end because of a lack of funding. So we decided that we would step in and support the event and in doing so we would be giving back something to the community that has been our home for many years. How have people responded to Young’s as carnival sponsors? We have had some great feedback and had nearly 100 entries last year with around 30,000 coming out to enjoy the carnival. People come from all around the country to visit the carnival and local people look forward to it every year so we’re delighted that we are able to be a part of it.
Was the Carnival an important part of your childhood? I lived in Yorkshire but I remember coming to Cleethorpes for the Jubilee and watching the carnival. We had a wonderful day and it’s been a fond and abiding memory. What is your role in the planning process? I help co-ordinate the Young’s support. We start planning in August for the following year. There is a team of twelve at Young’s plus the Clee Events team and around a further 60 Young’s employees and their families come and help on the day. What is your favourite memory of last year’s carnival? I was on the Young’s float with my 10 year old son who had a fantastic time! Just seeing everyone waving and looking happy, really enjoying the atmosphere of the carnival was amazing. It’s brilliant seeing the whole community come together and have a fun filled day. What are you looking forward to most this year? Hopefully even more people supporting and enjoying the carnival – plus we’ve got some amazing surprise acts planned this year! It’s going to be very special indeed so keep watching out for further news nearer the date!

s anyone who’s a regular reader of our web edition (and if not why not, just go to our Facebook page, give us a like and dive in) will know, the Whitgift Film Theatre offers a fantastic range of films, from big box office hits that you may have missed to art house movies that wouldn’t come to town otherwise. What people may be less aware of is that they also offer an extensive programme of live streams. That’s nothing to do with Ghostbusters - it’s the name for a live broadcast of a play, ballet or other major cultural event from a theatre to viewers all over the country (or even the world), and it means that at long last we provincials can get to see some of the great performances that London theatregoers enjoy, without all the travel and expensive overnights. Fabulous events they are too. Our reviewers have been privileged to see performances by The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Royal Ballet without ever having to leave sunny Grimbo and every performance we have reviewed has been first rate. The new season has just been announced and there are some fantastic shows on offer including the ENO’s Pirates of Penzance directed by Mike Leigh on Tuesday 19th May, Puccini’s La Bohème live from the Royal Opera House on Wednesday 10th June 2015 and the RSC’s Merchant Of Venice on Wednesday 22nd July 2015. Later in the year there’ll be David Suchet in The Importance Of Being Earnest, Hugh Quarshie as Othello and Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet. There’s even the great Andre Rieu live from Maastricht on Saturday 18th July. Definitely something to please everybody there. Go to www.whitgiftfilmtheatre.co.uk for more details and make the most of these wonderful opportunities to enjoy some of the great performances of our time, right on your doorstep.

CHIMNEY SWEEPS
We all know that if we have a real fire we should have our chimney swept regularly, that’s just common sense. But perhaps we’re not entirely sure why it’s so important. It’s got something to do with soot and Mary Poppins and not getting your Christmas presents dirty, we know that much, but further than that we probably can’t go and because of that it’s one of those essential pieces of home maintenance that often get postponed almost indefinitely,. And that’s when problems can start because your chimney is a vital safety device for your home and ....
A clean chimney is a healthy chimney!
D
id you know that people with a flame effect gas fire in regular use should have their chimney swept once or twice a year? No nor did we but even with gas fires an unswept flue can sometimes create hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. Your chimney is the exhaust pipe for your home, getting rid of the toxic by products of combustion and it needs to be clear of blockages and obstructions. Soot build up, birds nests and debris from damaged brickwork can all stop your chimney from working properly and cause dangerous gases to leak back into your home. They also increase the risk of chimney fires and long term smoke damage to your furniture and to the fabric of your home. So how often should a chimney be swept? Usually once a year for light use and twice a year for fireplaces in regular use. A professional sweep will be able to advise you more exactly because some fuels, particularly wood and coal, burn dirtier than others. Doesn’t it take ages and make a horrible mess? Probably much less of either than you think. With modern techniques and equipment most professional sweeps work quickly and with minimal mess. So how much will a sweep cost? That’s one of those how long is a piece of string questions but prices start from about £35 to 40 for an open fire. If you need to have the integrity of your chimney seal tested, or any remedial work done, then your sweep will quote you a price.
How can we go about finding a reliable chimney sweep? That’s an easier question. There are two trades associations for the industry, The Guild Of Master Chimney Sweeps and The National Association Of Chimney Sweeps, and you can make a start by going to the websites of one or the other or both, and searching for their members in your area. In a spirit of fairness you’ll find one sweep from each organisation on the page opposite and we’d suggest that having a word with them would be a good place to start. So there you go. Chimney sweeping - more important than you realise, cheaper than you think and if you give one of our sweeps a ring you can be assured of first class service and minimal mess. So why not give your chimney a bit of TLC soon, because a healthy chimney makes for a healthy home!

THE DARIUS BRUBECK QUARTET Grimsby Jazz @ The Old Clee Club May 6th 2015 Reviewed by Josie-Anne Gray There are not many bigger names than Brubeck in modern jazz so what a thrill it was to have Darius Brubeck come to town on May 6th. Alongside his long-standing rhythm section, Matt Ridley (bass) and Wes Gibbens (drums) Brubeck was also joined by Dave O'Higgins on saxes. Kicking off the first set with a summery number, Ravely Street was like a pleasant walk on a spring evening. I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You followed; a lovely, smoky piece from 1933 in which Brubeck offered a bright solo full of choppy notes that weren't quite staccato but which seemed filled with mischievous intent. Brubeck comes across as an urbane and charming man with a sweetness about him that reminded me of Leonard Cohen. He is generous in crediting his fellow musicians and keen to share his knowledge of the history of the music he makes. It must be quite difficult at times to have the name of Brubeck but he seems to wear it lightly. When introducing In Your Own Sweet Way he talked of the tradition of playing covers so marked in the jazz world. So many musicians draw on the canon of work, reinterpreting pieces in new ways. This version was a very engaging work that took the listener on a journey but did not risk losing them. It seemed to grow in depth as it progressed before coming to a super-warm and somewhat sexy finish with some darkly dramatic tones colouring the final bars. Brubeck explained that this gig was the first together for the band in a few months and that might have explained why the first set felt a bit uneven, as if they were playing themselves back into the groove. The opening of the second set, Blue Rondo a La Turk banished any anxiety that they might not be quite on form. From the first to the last note it was exquisite both in its detail and its mood and movement. Rich in flavours and tones the piece was truly exciting to listen to with the drums producing a punctuation effect to mark the changes in direction that it took. The bass was better when it was part

of the whole in my view. I wasn't mad keen on Matt Ridley's solo slots. They seemed to move too far from the pieces, to disconnect in a way that I personally did not enjoy but as an ensemble player he was remarkable. I also loved Flamingo in the second set. This arrangement was first played at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival by the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Its movement and shape evoked that of flamingos in take off and flight and of all the pieces had the strongest sense of narrative and purpose. To me it felt like Brubeck's piano was controlling the flight path throughout, with diversions from the sax but with the piano providing a clear trajectory. The second set built beautifully with the band creating a tangible frisson that had promoter Gill Wilde dancing with some abandon at the back of the room. Brubeck concluded with Take Five, probably the most well known and well regarded single piece of modern jazz. It isn't hard to see why it's so popular and enduring; it encapsulates the dynamic spirit of what modern jazz was originally all about. The band gave it the panache and polish it deserves and left the stage and the audience dazzled and delighted.

Out of Town M
ost of us live and work within walking distance of the town centre, whether that’s Grimsby, Cleethorpes or Immingham, and while we don’t live life at quite the feverish pace of big city dwellers it can be a stressful and noisy existence. Everyone has somewhere to go, things to do, stuff to shout about. You can’t escape the sound of busy people working hard. So it’s refreshing to get away from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle every once in a while and get out into one of the
villages that surround our major towns. For many of us the weekend wouldn’t be complete without donning our walking boots and peculiar looking shorts and setting out across the fields. What do we do it for? Well, for the peace, and for the tranquillity and of course to hear the sound of busy people working hard. Because out of town doesn’t mean out of touch with day to day realities of life and there are plenty of people who make their living away from the centre. Take Scartho as an example. It first appears in history in 1086 in the Domesday Book and its name implies Norse origins much older than that. In recent years it may have become a suburb of Grimsby, but its unique village status is proclaimed by the lovely little church of St Giles and you only have to step slightly off the path to find yourself crossing the fields to Bradley and Dixon’s Woods and beyond. Here you’ll find Ouch Pouch Childcare, based in the grounds of Springfield Road School and providing first class child care before and after school and in the school holidays. BUSINESS PARKS based in the grounds of the school, and providing individuated learning for children to help them achieve their full potential, and to continue with the rural theme we could mention Market Rasen (pictured page 14). It’s a market town, an industrial centre, home to a racecourse which hosts not only racing but music and sports as well and a chocolate producer, courtesy of Special Edition Chocolates at Willingham Hall. Not all the commercial activity that takes place out of town is based in villages however. The area is dotted with industrial estates and business parks which provide modern, purpose built facilities for a wide range of industry. An aerial view On Woodside Park, Tetney, (on Station Road, just opposite the Golf Club) you’ll find our good friends Lincs VWA, where Will Toyne, who offers repairs, servicing and engine remapping, often gets visits from the local deer population. We don’t get that in Top Town. To the west is Stallingborough, a village which has become synonymous with industry and commerce. It’s home to two power stations and extensive industrial estates, and it’s where you’ll find GL Commercials. Graham Lockington, has established

And if we’re talking about business parks then we can’t ignore the biggest of all, the South Humberside Industrial Estate, (aka The Pyewipe) which marks the western approaches to the town and the start of the heavy industries of the Humber Bank. It’s a vital commercial hub, home to a wide range of businesses, including cold stores, car dealerships, high end kitchens and of course a place where you can enjoy all the thrills and spills of kart racing at Karting World. A special mention goes to Pyewipe Estate our good friends at Sample Sped on Estate Road 6, couriers for both frozen and ambient goods and specialists in the delivery of eBay parcels. They’re always on the look out for new contracts and they take a pride in giving first class service. Over the past few years it has sometimes seemed that whenever anyone talked about the fishing and fish processing industries most of what they had to say was heavily laced with gloom and despondency. So when we came to research our fish docks feature it was good to meet people who knew what they were talking about and had a lot of optimism about the future of the town’s most iconic industry. Adaptability, sustainability and traceability were phrases we kept hearing, coupled with investment in quality. Because, as FMA Chief Executive Steve Norton reminded us

so lets get some proper Grimsby fish on that barbie! with the help of some delicious recipes courtesy of Seafish - the number one authority on seafood Barbecued Cod with a Cumin and Black Pepper Crust Ingredients: 14 x 175g cod fillets, skinned and boned 2 tablespoons olive oil 210ml (3/4 cup) toasted cumin seeds 3 tablespoons sea salt 4 tablespoons freshly cracked black pepper 2 lemons, quartered Method: Heat a dry frying pan over medium heat and pour in the cumin seeds. Move them around in the pan so that
they toast evenly. The seeds are ready when they begin to smoke lightly. Remove the seeds from the heat. Lightly coat the cod with the oil. Combine the spice rub ingredients and grind to a rough powder. Press about one tablespoon of powder into each side of the fish. Press the spices into the flesh so that they form a crust. Heat your barbecue until hot and then allow it to start cooling down. Place the cod fillets on the grill and allow to sizzle for about two minutes per side. Serve with lemon wedges and/or a tomato and onion salsa.
Salmon Parcels with Chilli and Rosemary Grimsby is one of the UK’s leading centres for the processing of salmon, so here’s a good, simple but delicious recipe to celebrate. Ingredients: 2 x 170g salmon fillets 2 tbsp olive oil 2 chillies, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, sliced 2 slices lemon 2 sprigs rosemary (or another herb of your choice) Method: Heat the oven to 200˚C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. Cut two large tin foil squares (they need to be big enough to hold the salmon fillets and be folded over.) Place the salmon in the centre of the
foil and drizzle over with oil. Top with the chilli, garlic, lemon and rosemary and a grind of black pepper. Wrap the foil around the fish to form a secure parcel and place on a baking tray. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until the salmon is cooked through. Serve in the foil or transfer to a serving plate with the juices poured over.

“THIS IS STILL EUROPE’S FOOD TOWN”
STEVE NORTON: CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE FMA
S
TALKS TO THE PEOPLES
teve Norton is Chief Executive of the Grimsby FMA, the body that represents fish merchants in our area. He’s been in the industry since starting with Ross Fish in 1966 as a management trainee. His career also took him to Findus Nestle and Young’s and he has been in his present role since 2001. He was good enough to give us a tour of the Fish Market and to answer some questions. The Peoples: What’s the role of the FMA in the seafood industry? Steve Norton: The FMA is a trade association. We exist to represent our members, to lobby on their behalf and to get the best possible deal for them. We help our members in many ways, from providing advice about business law to helping to sort out problems with utilities companies or banks. We are also on very good terms with members of the Government especially the Fisheries Minister and with the fisheries ministers from other
countries such as Iceland. I like to think that we give our members good value for money. You’ve recently started an organisation called Seafood Grimsby and Humber. What’s the purpose of the new brand? Seafood Grimsby and Humber involves some of the most important people in the local industry along with representatives from NE Lincs Council, their strategic partner Cofely and academics from the Grimsby Institute. We are engaged in planning the best possible future for the cluster of seafood related industries on both banks of the Humber. We tried to bring together all sectors of the seafood industry from catching to processing and distribution. Sadly, the catching side is not as big as it was but this town is still a major seafood hub. If you are in the seafood industry, you will have business with Grimsby. Either you will be based here or you will send
your product here or you will purchase from here. The seafood industry is worth 2.5 billion pounds a year to the local economy. This is still Britain’s Food Town and 70% of Europe’s chilled fish is produced in this area. The FMA celebrated its centenary in 2011 but we felt that it was time for renewal. We needed a more cluster inclusive body to take over some of the work of the FMA and so Seafood Grimsby and Humber was conceived and developed in conjunction with Simon Dwyer and Liz Baghurst of the Seafox management consultancy. Has the processing industry in this area adapted and become more diverse in response to changes in the industry? Most certainly. There is a wide range of processing going on locally. We are one of the biggest salmon processing areas outside Scotland, producing quality products for both retail and the catering industry. We have crab, lobster and shellfish specialists like Fastline on the North Wall. At Cawood’s fish curers on the Pyewipe Industrial Estate they produce salt fish, or bacalao, and we also have firms who process by products. At the Fish Meal Factory UFI have a very high tech operation producing animal
FISH DOCKS
feed and there is a company called JHS at Stallingborough who buy fish heads and freeze dry them for export. We are in the process of commissioning some research into possible medical by products which is a very promising line of enquiry. How important to the industry is European protection for traditional Grimsby smoked fish? Grimsby smoked fish is one of our most famous products, cured in the traditional way, over smouldering wood shavings, without artificial colours or flavourings. Now it has the same protection as Parma Ham, Champagne and Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. It’s a superb product. We’re very proud of it. What’s the future for the Grimsby fishing industry cluster? Obviously the industry has changed. Fewer boats, fewer merchants but still as much fish processed in the town as there ever was. I think we will be a major centre for many years to come and I hope that both the FMA and Seafood Grimsby and Humber will have played a major part in achieving a sustainable industry. That would be a good legacy for me and for the organisations.

TOP QUALITY FRESH CAUGHT LOBSTER, CRAB & WHELKS FROM FASTLINE SHELLFISH
f you like shellfish then you’ll know that it’s a case of the fresher the better – that’s why you should pay a visit to Fastline Shellfish. Fastline catch and sell lobsters, crabs and whelks to the restaurant trade, wholesalers, fishmongers and also to the public from their premises on the North Wall and it’s a real family business, with Darren Kenyon doing the catching on his boat, the MV Sweetwaters, while the factory and shop are the domain of his wife, Jenny. Darren sails on the morning tide each day to get an early start on the journey to the fishing grounds. He usually fishes in the Humber Mouth between two and four hours out although in winter he may go a lot further. He usually has about 1400 pots out on any given day, strung together in fleets of 40 or 50 each and they have to be hauled up and emptied, rebaited and replaced. It’s hard work, especially in bad weather and of course you have to be careful to keep your fingers away from harm – those claws can give a nasty nip. Meanwhile Jenny has been at work since 6am getting ready for the arrival of the vans that will take their produce to shops and markets all over the country. Later she divides her time between serving customers who call in and taking orders on the phone. It’s non stop but with such a reputation for quality they’re always in demand. So if you’re looking for the very best shellfish, look no further than Fastline.

FISH DOCKS MORE THAN JUST A TRADITION
ALFRED ENDERBY’S SMOKE HOUSE WORLD CLASS SMOKED FISH
I
t’s not hard to find Alfred Enderby’s smoke house on Fish Dock Road – you just head for the distinctive row of cowlings on the roof. They swing with the wind and ensure that the weather doesn’t disrupt the process of producing the traditional smoked haddock, salmon and cod for which the firm is famous. This is not the bright yellow, slightly chemical tasting stuff you’re used to but a pale, shining, subtly flavoured delicacy. What makes it so superior to industrially made products are the slow, relatively cool, smoking process, the use of top quality fillets, and scrupulous attention to detail. Fish is bought fresh on the market every day, filleted on the premises, brined and then hung to cure overnight on stainless steel speats above a smouldering bed of wood shavings. Grimsby traditional smoked fish is one of the town’s proudest exports – which is why it has been awarded the coveted Protected Geographic Indication by the EU. At Enderby’s they have people come from all over the country to buy and to see genuine food craftsmanship at work, so next time you’re in the mood for a bit of smoked for tea why not treat yourself to some traditional Grimsby smoked haddock? You’ll love the difference!

Once you’ve bought your fish don’t just simmer it in milk! There are lots of delicious ways to cook Grimsby smoked haddock Here’s a new twist on a Mediterranean fish risottos courtesy of our friends at Seafish.
Smoked Haddock and Green Herb Risotto Ingredients: 1 large smoked haddock fillets, diced 100 grams Arborio rice 25ml olive oil Half a medium onion, diced 1 garlic clove, finely chopped Half a glass of white wine 300ml fish stock 25 grams cream cheese 12 grams finely grated parmesan Small bunch (any selection of) parsley, tarragon, dill and chives Half a lemon Salt and pepper to season
Method: In a saucepan, sweat the onion in the olive oil. When soft, add the rice and stir constantly for around five minutes. Add the garlic and stir for one minute, turning the heat up full. Add the wine and gradually add the stock, 200ml at a time stirring until absorbed. After about eight minutes, taste the rice for consistency - it should have a little bite but not be crunchy or chalky. Add the diced smoked haddock, cream cheese and parmesan and stir through. Add the chopped herbs, a squeeze of lemon juice and season to taste. Cook for another three or four minutes and serve with bread and butter.

The new traceability regulations mean that all the fish we sell will carry a label saying where and when it was caught and by what vessel and where and how it was processed, so the customer can be sure that the fish they’re eating was sustainably and legally sourced and has been processed under the strictest hygiene conditions. We think that customers should think twice before buying fish that doesn’t carry the traceability labels.” If all these changes can be put in place Chris sees a bright future for the seafood industry in this area. “It’s about adaptability,” he says. “This industry has a vibrant dynamic and the town is a centre for skills and knowledge and excellence. right flowering Pelargonium, commonly referred to as geranium, are the perfect May flower to brighten up your garden. They like a sunny aspect and provide instant colour for pots, window boxes, containers, hanging baskets and borders and will flower from spring right through to late autumn. Pelargonium fan Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE says “When I see Perlargoniums my heart sings with joy. They are one of my favourite plants and they are such an easy patio plant to grow. I particularly love the vibrant
flower colours that look stunning against their dark green foliage. Their scents are irresistible and fill the air with hints of rose, lemon, and spice. When they are in full flower they are spectacular and amazingly beautiful. Every year I can’t wait for summer to arrive when my patio is full of large tubs overflowing with Pelargoniums”. Pelargoniums are great to grow in pots and are ideal for novice gardeners. They flower from spring right through to late autumn and if protected from frost during the winter months they will thrive for many years.

ARTS
Short of Stature, Huge of Heart. Mike Harding at Barton Ropery Hall May 16th 2015 Reviewed by Josie-Anne Gray
ARTS
I
expected Mike Harding to be funny last night. He has always been funny. I wondered whether he might be a bit flat and sad in response to the election or even bolshy and cross. But he was not; he was genial, warm and quietly hilarious. The time flew as he moved seamlessly between tales, jokes and readings of his poems and extracts from his forthcoming autobiography, The Adventures of the Crumpsall Kid, a must-read when it comes out on the basis of last night's nuggets. Harding gave an intimate glimpse into his life and times mainly through his anecdotes, some of which were hilariously funny but some of which were heartbreaking. His skill is in the way he moves between the joys and sorrows of life. His stories are tangible and touch the audience because of the common ground. Like many of his generation (he was born in 1944) he grew up fatherless. His twenty-three year old father was shot down and killed a month before his birth leaving his nineteen year old bride a widow and a mother within thirteen months of their marriage. Harding's moving poem Photo Father told of how he constructed his father from his image over the years. He spoke matter-of-factly about his mother's grief, of how in spite of re-marrying she never truly recovered from the loss of her first husband and never spoke to her son of his father. Off-setting what might have been a very sorrowful childhood was the presence of Irish Catholic grandparents who clearly adored the young Harding and he them. He brought his grandmother's Catholic fervour to life in the poem The Devil's Bible. She believed in the devil as a physical entity rather than as a concept of evil and terrified the young Harding with tales of how the devil would incarnate. His more earthy, atheist republican socialist grandfather would counter with constant criticism of the church and all its doings. On balance there is probably more of grandpa than grandma in the Harding of today although he is no tubthumping firebrand, more a witty and wry commentator on the parlous state of political affairs as he sees it. Harding read from the autobiography his account of his first day of school and all the attendant horror and trauma it entailed. The audience was rapt, no doubt many of them remembering similar traumas. Harding is all about common experience and a shared past. The demon infant class teacher Miss Worswick is a familiar figure to those who know his work. She is a character known to me and my family because of our shared love of Harding's telling of the school nativity story You can see the angel's bum Miss Worswick when one of the angels did indeed reveal all to the audience in a too-short tunic. However, Cissy Worswick was given humanity last night in a new poem about her, Cissy Worswick Waltzes. Harding took away that steely, martinet persona long associated with her and presented a lonely woman, a post-war spinster locked into a servile relationship caring for elderly parents, bound by routine which was broken once a week when after Sunday dinner, Miss Worswick would take advantage of her parents' napping, close the parlour curtains, strip naked and waltz alone in the dark for an hour. The poem is almost unbearably sad as Miss Worswick comes to represent that generation of women who lost so much as a consequence of the Great War and who had limited, locked down lives. Harding took the audience on a tour of his life from the brutal Catholic boys' grammar school run by psychotic priests, through skiffle and youth rebellion to the gentle west of Ireland where he has a small cottage, a place of peace for him and his family, particularly his adored grandsons. I had to wipe my eyes more than once as he read The Running Boys of Summer a poem about missing the boys once they go home but also about so much of love and loss, awareness of getting old and that there is so much more behind than in front these days. Harding is a seasoned performer and there was never an awkward pause or a dull moment last night. He has the dry humour of a curmudgeonly northerner; a Lancastrian who lives in Yorkshire and cracks jokes about selling trinkets to the natives with a twinkle in his eye all the time. He is a down to earth, pint of ale everyman, a chap who

ARTS
would not do you a bad turn if he could do you a good one with a strong sense of social justice. It bothers him greatly that women can go to prison for benefit fraud totalling ÂŁ2000 but no one is in jail for the libor scandal that has led to the impoverishment of millions of people. Harding is, like my parents and all of that generation, carrying a deep seam of sorrow from the Second World War, not so much from direct experience, they were babes in arms when it ended, but from what it did to their parents' generation and what it meant. It touches everything and informs the very essence of their personhood. As that generation gets old and frail and dies away so does that sense of shared adversity and common purpose. There is nothing like it in the generations following them and that is clearly in evidence in the way the current alpha elite is stripping away at all that was achieved in the years post 1945. They have no sense of its value. Harding is old fashioned. His jokes and stories are old fashioned. But they belong to a world that is better, braver and more honest than the one that calls itself modern and metropolitan. I did not want to leave the world Harding built on the stage last night. It was imbued with kindness, compassion, humour and values worth holding on to. I hope he doesn't plan to retire any time soon.

PYREX a one hundred year success story
F
rom humble beginnings in 1915 to the international household name it has now become, Pyrex has earned the trust of millions of cooks and bakers throughout the past 100 years. As their centenary approaches it’s interesting to look back at one of the original kitchen brands. Pyrex is made of borosilicate glass, originally developed as battery housing material. The cookware was invented by Jessie Littleton of the Corning Glass Works in response to complaints from his wife that her earthenware pots kept shattering in the oven. The new glass was given the distinctive blue tint that Pyrex still has to this day and was an instant success. Over the years the range has varied to suit changing fashions. Brightly coloured opaque pots were in demand in the 1950s, freezer safe cookware was wanted in the 1970s and today it’s microwaveable crockery that’s a household essential. The Pyrex product range today reflects the evolution of cooking and baking methods during the past 100 years and key changes in demand. With the introduction of a comprehensive top of stove range, cast iron SlowCook products in light of the trend for low temperature cooking methods and a precision measuring collection for experimental cooks, Pyrex offer a product collection which provides a solution for almost any kitchenware problem. To find out more about Pyrex and the entire product collection, please visit www.pyrexuk.com.
There’s even a special limited edition measuring jug to celebrate the Pyrex centenary available nationwide from mid-January until December 2015, RRP £6.99.

Heath & Hygiene expand with new vehicle and equipment to take on bigger office cleaning contracts Local cleaning specialists Heath & Hygiene are on a roll as major new contracts (partly a result of The Peoples we’re pleased to say, so hats off to us) mean that they’re expanding with new staff, a new vehicle, (decked out in their distinctive colours of course) and a new high tech cleaning machine that’s more effective and greener than its predecessor. Proprietor Heath Johnson has spent the past nine years making Heath & Hygiene into an overnight success and he’s delighted with the development. “Having an extra man on the team will mean not only more contracts but also that we can do a quicker turn round on major jobs”, he explains. “We clean domestic,
commercial and industrial premises but sometimes with offices people need you to be in and out in a weekend. An extra pair of skilled hands on the job will make a huge difference.” “Having the right machine for the job is important too. A professional carpet or floor clean can transform your home or business. There are lots of do it yourself options but often they not only give poor results, they can cause permanent damage such as carpet shrinkage. When you choose Heath & Hygiene you’re choosing the experts and you know the job will be done just right.”

LEARNING
Individuated learning that’s the Kumon way Children learn better when they’re enjoying themselves but how do you persuade them to enjoy maths and English? One person who knows the answer is Sarah Prior of the Grimsby Kumon Centre so we thought we’d ask her to share the secret. What are the main benefits that parents and children can expect to see from using Kumon? Children who study with Kumon improve their maths and English in order to catch up and move ahead of school level. They also improve their study skills and concentration as well as gaining self confidence and self belief. Your Kumon class always seems like a really happy place. Is that important to the Kumon system? We try to motivate children with positive praise and encouragement at Kumon in order that they can reach their full potential. I think it is very important that the class is a low stress working environment and that children enjoy coming to the centre. What’s the secret to making students enjoy learning the Kumon way? Kumon is individualised study and so children move through the programme at their own pace. They aren’t competing with anyone or
being compared. It is my task, as the instructor, to set appropriate work so that they make good, solid progress and the work is manageable. They also practice topics until they feel confident with them – this can make a real difference. Can students start at any time of year or is it best to wait till the start of a term? My centre is open all year , unless closed for my own holidays. The classes run through the school holidays and children can start at any time. Students start when the time is right for them. What’s the most satisfying thing about running a Kumon centre? It’s such a rewarding job. First and foremost I love to see how Kumon can help children improve their maths/English and grow in confidence. Secondly I really enjoy working with children. Third, I love being an instructor and guiding and motivating children through the Kumon programme.

IN THE KNOW
IN THE KNOW
something amusing something amazing Tracey Edges finds something for everyone at The Warehouse
T
he Warehouse is down Freeman Street. Some people probably will read that and then go no further. That would be a shame. This venue already has a battle on its hands, just to get people through the doors. It is a community project so the second battle is always going to be funding. Combine the two and what do you have? Actually, you have a great venue with lots of potential. Two years down the line from its opening maybe that potential could have been slightly more realised but there has been quite a turnover of staff, which is never helpful for growth and consistency, and a bank of volunteer staff, which is always a balancing act to manage. So, hats off to them for their efforts to date I have been to two events there, a few days apart, and had two totally different experiences. The first event that I attended was in association with The Official Comedy Club: “3 Top Stand-up Comedians as seen on TV”. Unfortunately, they found that they turned up to entertain a rather small audience of about 30 people. Such a shame, especially as it was only £6 in advance for a ticket. To their credit all three comedians took it in their stride, especially as I would think that they feed on a much larger atmosphere. The Warehouse auditorium (think large lecture theatre size) has a good third of the space dedicated to tiered flip down seating. It was comfortable enough for a few hours. To make for more of a club atmosphere, some round tables had been placed in front of the stage, with white, paper tablecloths and round glass balls filled with lights. This made for a more intimate setting. A large
party, celebrating a birthday, sat right at the front and the cake was the star of quite a few running gags. The host/compere/warm up comedian number one, Bryan Lacey, bantered and chatted with the closer members of the audience and was very personable. A nice touch was that he had been before and recognised some people. Bryan also remembered one member of the audience, an older gentleman, who delighted in heckling all of the comedians. To their credit they all managed him very well, without things turning nasty. That showed their professionalism. I also liked the fact that Bryan got some local observations in. For example questioning the necessity for a dedicated sunblind shop in a northern UK town. Do we really have that much sun? “Must be a front for something else then....!” He also went through the Grimsby Telegraph, picking out local oddities. Bryan had a relaxed, unpretentious, natural style. The middle man was edgier, fast talking, Irishman Ryan McDonnell and one of his stories centred about raceism, religious prejudice and, as he is, ginger-ism. As a fair proportion of the audience were of the red persuasion, myself included, it was easy to empathise and laugh along. The third act, and presumably the headliner, comedian was Tim Clark. I don’t know whether it was his accent or

IN THE KNOW just the manner in which he constructed his sentences but he reminded me of a mix of Jo Brand and Martin Clunes. His intelligent confidence owned the stage. Humour is subjective and I laughed enough, at all three. They were a good mix as all very distinct personalities and styles. My main criticism was that by the time the final act finished we had had oodles of smut and I was bored and feeling that they were all better than that. Student humour is lazy and I often feel that ‘adult’ is a misnomer in ‘adult humour’. They got laughs, I laughed, but I did start to do a bit of eye-rolling by the third variation of that particular theme. I probably wouldn’t have gone to this show, as I was unfamiliar with these three comedians but they were all decent guys and I think most of the audience found something to laugh about – which is useful for a Comedy Club night out! If you see one on again, September will be the next time, go and try it. Just because you may not know who the performers are, doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy it. For a reasonable price you may well find you have a fun night out. Decide on your comfort level of participation though and book your seat in accordance. If you want to be in the thick of it – go for the front. Otherwise hide towards the back. There was nothing nasty but a 19 year old, who was there with his mum, got a fair bit of near to the knuckle ribbing from all three. My second evening of entertainment, provided by The Warehouse was Chris Good - Comedy Hypnotist “The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have In Your Sleep!” Once again, this show was only £6, or £8 on the door and once again, wasn’t something that I would have normally gone to. Up for anything though .... except volunteering to be on the stage .... Uh oh. No! Happy to watch. This had a bigger audience, but still plenty of room left for more people, and I wondered if Chris Good – Comedy Hypnotist would have enough volunteers to fill the row of chairs, spread right across the stage. Much to my surprise, when the call went out, the chairs were all filled. These volunteers were told that they wouldn’t be made to take off any clothing and they wouldn’t do anything
they really didn’t want to. However, I’m still really pleased that I remained, bum firmly glued to seat. I can’t say too much without spoiling the show for further audiences, but we’re not talking contemporary Derren Brown or magician, Dynamo here. Local
man, Chris Good has been a hypnotist for 30 years and his set is of the more traditional variety. Not suitable for under 18s though due to some swearing and ‘adult humour’. (Pre-booked shows can be tailored to the audience and family versions are available). Some of his subjects were more resistant to his suggestions and the row of volunteers were slowly whittled down to the more entertaining ones.
IN THE KNOW There were a couple who didn’t feel comfortable and Chris didn’t make them feel bad for leaving. We were talking to Chris before the show and he is a really nice guy. His daughter was his assistant for the evening. I was watching the show on
my own but I can imagine that it is far more entertaining if you are with a crowd and some of your party volunteer to be hypnotised. Better for Chris, as well, if he has several groups ‘joining in’ with the banter and upping the atmosphere for all. Chris and his daughter were really nice and it’s great to see local people entertaining more local people in a local venue.
The Warehouse has a lot to offer behind its white facade. Previously a carpet warehouse, now renovated to provide a multi-purpose entertainment centre suitable for all types of events, it also has a good sized bar area and a gym. All prices are very reasonable, from the ticket prices to the drinks. So would I go back to The Warehouse? Most definitely especially since on my second visit the bar had been totally rearranged to become a much more welcoming space. Tables and chairs had been placed in front of the bar and the lights had been turned right down. The tables, complete with bowls of lights, were occupied and there was quite a buzz of activity. Two very simple changes made for one massive improvement. Also, when I first arrived and handed in my ticket I was welcomed by Toni, who asked if I knew where I was going. The first time I didn’t know but wasn’t asked. A welcoming smile makes a big difference – it says ‘thank you for bothering to come’ and tells you that you are entering a friendly place. Later on, after the show, Toni handed me an evaluation sheet and we had a chat about the show and later she sought me out to give me a flyer for an upcoming show that she thought I may be interested in. Toni got the gold star for customer service, from me, that night. She was one of the volunteers from Foresight and she was genuinely pleasant and helpful. There will be a greater range of events coming up such as One And Only Direction, a One Direction covers band and a range of dance classes. The new events manager, is aiming to liven up The Warehouse whether it is with local band nights or contemporary performers from further afield so watch this space .... After the spectacular success of UK cyclists over the past few years and the enthusiasm which greeted the Tour de France when it set out from Yorkshire last year it’s no surprise that cycling is more popular than it has ever been.

hether you’re already a keen cyclist or you’re just thinking about taking it up then one place that ought to be high on your list for a visit is the new JC Cook Ltd showroom on Jackson Place (down Wilton Road, take the first left and follow the signs). When you enter and the doors glide shut behind you it’s like stepping into a big city prestige store with hundreds of bikes, massive displays of clothing and equipment, a repair centre, changing rooms and a first rate coffee shop. It’s the kind of place that makes shopping for your new bike a real pleasure. JC Cook Ltd is a well known local name of course. Founded by Jack Cook in 1954, present owner Adrian Blow took over twenty years ago. As an ex-army mechanic and keen cyclist he had a special interest in the repair side of the business and that department is still going strong both at the new showroom and at the firm’s shop in Ladysmith Road. Cycling has been enjoying a boom in popularity lately following the UK’s Olympic success and every weekend finds hundreds of local people out on the Wolds roads or enjoying the thrills of off road riding or cyclo-cross. Cooks carry a range of excellent machines by the likes of Cube, Orange and many others to meet the needs of the most demanding of sports cyclists but they also offer ranges suitable for commuters and beginners and a great range of kid’s machines. There’s even a selection of electric bikes for those who like to let the battery take the strain. All of which means that if you’re in the market for a new bike or if you just fancy a leisurely look at what’s available and a great cup of coffee, you couldn’t pick a better place to start than the new JC Cook Ltd.

It’s been a long, tough winter and your poor old car got you through, in rain and snow, sleet and hail. Time for some TLC as a well deserved reward for all its hard work and with any luck it’ll get you through the summer and into autumn.
Now’s a good time to give your car a complete clean inside and outside. Patches of grime and dirt collected over the winter can cause corrosion so wash the exterior thoroughly and take it to a car wash that specialises in under-side cleaning to get rid of all that nasty salt and grit build up.
motoring holiday time is on the way - time to get ready for summer! Check your lights and wiper blades are good and make sure the tyres are not damaged or worn. Replace if necessary. Keeping a spare pack of car bulbs in your boot is also a good idea - you never know when one may go.
If you’re allergic to pollen then hay fever can affect your driving especially if it starts suddenly. Use a pollen filter or the air con to help purify the air.
Tree sap dries tough as nails so wash it off regularly with hot water and a clean sponge. If it has hardened use a colour restorer and an electric polisher. Use specialist cleaning pads to buff the car paint but never use household cleaning pads as these ruin the paintwork.
Check fluid levels. Don’t rely on the warning lights! If you’re not confident take the car to a good mechanic - a service at this time of year is no bad thing anyway!
Always keep a pair of sunglasses with you; these will come in handy when dealing with glare from early morning and evening low sun.

MUSIC
W Waves was the place to be on Saturday 4th of April as Avenue 44 Music took over the venue for the first ever BOG (Best Of Grimsby) Fest. We went down to listen to some of the best bands in the area giving their time and talent to raise money for Alopecia UK and get some pictures and Amy Naylor took her pencil and paper. A really excellent day and hopefully the first of many!
aves was ALIVE this weekend for the highly anticipated B.O.G Fest and it really did show the best of Grimsby (and Cleethorpes, don’t forget Cleethorpes). It also raised a massive £800 plus for Alopecia UK. This charity hit close to home for Phil Stocks, the organiser of the event and it showed in the crazy amount of dedication and effort put into the day’s gig. There was eleven hours of non-stop live music from a huge diversity of musicians and bands and Phil and his team of volunteers were on top form all day. Starting out with some chilled sets from the likes of local stars Lucy Everatt and Hattie Cattell along with acoustic alternative covers duo Through The Cracks and the legendary Les Wood, the crowd came and went with each act and slowly but surely the atmosphere grew from that of a relaxed enjoyment, to an eager anticipation for the second half of the day… The bands!

LIVE IN CLE The drinks were flowing, the music turned up a notch and as the first band set up the room filled to bursting. 70s style rock band Grenade kicked off the night with a storm of a set, playing a mixture of crowd pleaser classics and catchy originals. Following them was a huge change in tone as Reversing Destiny took to the stage with their heavy riffs and boundless energy. The crowd rotated between sets as new fans and supporters arrived for the upcoming bands but the room was always full and alive with excitement. We were treated to sets from Ruby and The Knights with their ace new lineup and popular rock band Lost By Eleven before Zak Rashid took to the stage with his crazy good band and won the first encore of the night from the

Keeping the energy up, Sewer Rats jumped up with their banged up instruments and belting tunes, wearing the Alopecia UK t-shirt signed by all the bands so far. And the night just kept getting better and better. There was a sneaky juggling performance from Jack and Ilze of The Earthbound Misfits and the final two bands The Laws and The Finest Hour rocked it in an awesome finale to an awesome day. But much to everyone’s surprise and delight the Carnival was rescued, Leanor explains, “To my astonishment three weeks later I had a call from Young’s Seafood Limited asking if we
support the parade and to put more back into the community. It was wonderful to know the parade had this kind of support! And ever since then the partnership between Young’s Seafood and the Cleethorpes Carnival has thrived!” We asked Leanor how she was feeling about the upcoming Carnival. “I’m really looking forward to this one. I always have, since it started 40 years ago, but I think this will be one of the best ever. I have so many memories and I love seeing the reaction on the children’s faces when they see all the colour, and noise and bustle. This year we have so many exciting things planned, with amazing new acts and a few old favourites coming to join in the celebration, I really can’t wait!”

eanor Pidgen has for many years been a pillar of the Cleethorpes community, tirelessly volunteering for local groups and organisations including the Girls Brigade, the Haverstoe Park committee, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards organisation and many others. She is also governor at three schools and thanks to many hours spent helping to organise and run the Cleethorpes Carnival with sponsors Young’s Seafood, she is often described as the face of the Carnival! In the run up to this year’s Carnival, which takes place on Saturday 18th July, Leanor will be writing a fortnightly diary to give us a glimpse of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of this wonderful community event! First Leanor told us about her own history with the Carnival. “I’ve so many connections with it, from my children entering the very first one to my son organizing it when he worked for Cleethorpes Council”. However, she explained, in 2012 the Carnival’s future looked uncertain, “I had exhausted all avenues in looking for funding and eventually we had to take the tough decision that 2012 would be the last ever
