In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live AREA’S FIRST FAMILY URBAN FESTIVAL

STREET ART AND DANCE COME TO TOP TOWN

VIBRANT COLOUR AND COOL VIBES!

T

here’ll be plenty of urban culture on display in Town Hall Square on 19th September between 10am and 5pm when ten top professional street artists visit Grimsby to create live artwork and showcase the best of UK urban street art alongside local talent. Nationally acclaimed professional street artists with a diverse range of styles including Brave, Girls on Top, Mr Zee, Tens and Dime1 will allow the public the chance to experience a unique art form created live on the day before their very eyes. Taking place in the centre of Grimsby at St James House, in the under croft area and in and around the Minster, this new event will see the professional graffiti artists create aerosol art on canvases such as walls, boarding and on packaging wrap. Entertainment will be provided by Hip Hop DJ, live music, MC artists and Blood Masterz a breakdance crew from Leeds. There will also be street food stalls and the Minster will host a digital graffiti booth, urban arts and crafts stalls, children’s art activities and exhibitions of historical Grimsby graffiti as well as more contemporary work. Once regarded as criminal and vandalism the work of street artists such as Banksy and Grimsby’s own Lyns Powles (whose work is on the left of this page) have taken street art into the mainstream.

IN THE KNOW According to Paula Denton of Denton Associates - “This festival is about celebrating and showcasing a form of art that has progressively become mainstream, professional and enhances urban spaces across the world. Our festival is about the public and especially children and young people experiencing and engaging with the creative act of street art alongside music and dance in a family friendly event” Lyns Powles of Lyns Urban Art adds - “The festival is a showcase event of the four elements of the hip hop urban art scene both locally and nationally. Graffiti art will be produced by high quality artists in a variety of styles showing what can be produced with a spray can and a lot of dedication. Great Taste 2015: Big Fish Brand Is A Multiple Winner!

I

f you’re a bit of a foodie then you won’t need us to tell you that the Great Taste Awards are something special. They’re the world’s most coveted blind tasted food awards, presented by The Guild Of Fine Foods, and they’ve just announced that our good friends at Big Fish Brand have been awarded stars for five of their products which will now be able to carry the prestigious gold and black Great Taste logo to show that they are among the winners! The awards were judged by hundreds of top food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers including Masterchef judge and restaurant critic Charles Campion, TV presenter and cook Aggie Mackenzie, Great British Bake Off winner Frances Quinn, Masterchef the Professionals finalist, Adam Handling, and food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer.

The Big Fish Brand products awarded stars were their Organic Salmon Fillets and four products from their marinated range - Salmon Fillets in Thai, BBQ, Mint and Sweet Chilli marinades. It’s the second year that the Eastern Thai Salmon has been selected for an award a fact of which the team behind the products are especially proud. The awards will be presented on Monday 7th September at a ceremony held at The Royal Garden Hotel, London which will be attended by two directors of the company, husband and wife Andrew and Louise Coulbeck (pictured right), who are very excited that their family run business has been recognised for its excellence. So congratulations to Big Fish and JCS from all of us here at The Peoples and we look forward to bringing you further news of the company’s success because after all, frozen is the new fresh!

here’s always a special buzz about the Auditorium when there’s a big name in town and they don’t come much bigger than the mighty UB40, who will be taking to the stage on October 12th when they bring their Getting Over The Storm tour to town. Taking their name from an unemployment benefit form, UB40 formed in Birmingham in 1978, and released their debut album Signing Off - considered by many to be one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band - in August 1980. That was the start of a career that has since seen them have over forty UK Top 40 hit singles including Red, Red Wine, Can’t Help Falling In Love and Kingston Town and achieve sales of over 100 million records, making them one of the most successful British groups of all time. Their latest album, Getting Over The Storm, was awarded BBC Radio 2’s Album Of The Week accolade and received 5 star reviews from the UK’s music press on its release in September 2013. Should be a great night - we’ll see you there! To purchase tickets go to grimsbyauditorium.org.uk or atgtickets.com or ring 0844 871 3016 for further information.

IN THE KNOW ANOTHER GREAT LINE UP FOR

JAZZ PROM 2015 AT GRIMSBY MINSTER

F

FROM PANS TO PIAF AND MORE!

ollowing on from the huge success of Jazz Prom 2014 Grimsby Jazz have announced another great line up for this year’s event which takes place on Saturday 17th October starting at 2.15pm at Grimsby Minster. Leeds band Pan Jumby will open the show in the afternoon, playing a blend of modern calypso, Caribbean rhythms, rumba and chacha, all channelled through the versatile vocabulary of jazz. The band is led by Dudley Nesbitt who is an exceptional and unflagging advocate of the art and culture of the steel pan, with Richard Ormrod on saxophones, clarinet and flute and Barkley McKay keyboards and guitar, Kenneth Higgins electric bass and Sam Hobbs on drums. NEL Hub Youth Choir will be taking part in a vocal workshop led by Tina May (pictured right) during the day and will then perform in the afternoon. Tina is currently visiting professor at Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music in London. After the interval Tina May Sings Piaf brings a performance by Tina and Nikki Iles. These two exceptional performers have a rapport that takes the partnership between singer and pianist to a level far beyond mere voice plus accompaniment and together they will recreate iconic Parisian cabaret bar Le Boeuf sur le Toit and Edith Piaf’s greatest hits, with Karen Street on accordion and Julie Walkington on double bass. Sounds like a real treat for ears young and old, so don’t delay, book today jazz fans!

Tickets £10 adults and £5 for children, including high tea. Adult tickets £5 and free for accompanied children without food. Available from gill.wilde49@gmail.com or Cleethorpes TIC on 01472 323111.

Still Beachy After All These Years Tracey Edges visits the Beachcomber (twice) in search of poptasticness

I

drive past The Beachcomber regularly, en-route to dog walks on the beach, and have fond memories of walking there, along Buck Beck, and spending hot summer days by the lido. We had shorter legs by the time we trekked all the way home, slurping ice-creams so, with full mouths, we couldn’t moan too much. It’s rather a while since I was five though and I will admit that I have never been to an event there in all the years since. I suppose I associated the venue with the dinner dances my parents used to go to. And I was always a Winter Garden’s girl but we won’t mention that now... So when I happened to see the Beachcomber events on Facebook, complete with some pretty good shows I just had to give it a try, and in many ways it felt like stepping back in time to the heyday of the Gardens. Not identical of course but remarkably similar in style, from the kitschy piano and guitar at the entrance to the gloriously named Starlight Room (please never change that). There’s plenty of room for dancing, a good long bar with plenty of staff and a good size stage with a smart new lighting rig.

All in all it’s well worth investigating www.beachcomberholidaypark.co.uk because with such a varied programme, there is bound to be something for everyone. Just recently they’ve hosted the likes of comedian Chrissy Rock from Benidorm and reality shows fame and The Real Thing. Without meaning to I won two tickets to go and see The Real Thing – yes, THE REAL The Real Thing. I just shared the event on Facebook. I hadn’t noticed that doing so put you into a draw. In fact they do that for most events so worth giving them a like and seeing what’s coming up. Support to The Real Thing were 70’s Revamp. They’d been down to the fancy dress shop and got togged up to the nines in as much 70s gear as they could find and they cranked out plenty of disco hits such as It’s Gonna be A Lovely Day, Feel The Need In Me and Carwash, to name but a few. With an audience made up mostly of mums and dads I felt a bit like I was in a Beryl Cook painting but it was great fun and everybody was clearly up for a good night of dancing (especially the dads).

MUSIC

19

The Real Thing formed in Liverpool in 1970 and three of the original members remain: brothers Chris and Eddie Amoo and Dave Smith. Eddie joined the band just before they had chart success with songs such as the number one You To Me Are Everything and the follow up Can’t Get By Without You which reached number two. Eddie is now 65, Chris and Dave are 63 and the newest member, James Lane is the baby at 46, but they can still bounce around the stage and they seemed to be having a really great time. This was infectious and throughout their set there was plenty of dancing and singing along from a happily entertained audience. It was a fun night which got people moving, singing and smiling. The Real Thing are a fun band - you should go see them next time they’re around. Having not been to the Beachcomber for few decades, I then went again, this time to see The South. The Beautiful South were formed in Hull, in 1988 by former Housemartins, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway. Both sang lead and backing vocals. Female vocals came first fom Briana Corrigan, then Jacqui Abbott was brought in in 1994. In 2003, after Abbott’s departure, Alison Wheeler took over. The band split in 2007 after twenty years, ten albums, thirty four singles and fifteen million record sales worldwide. The official reason was “musical similarities!” In 2008, Dave Hemingway, Dave Stead and Alison Wheeler reunited as The New Beautiful South, a nine piece band which included long time band associates and live members, Damon Butcher, Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson. They shortened the name to just The South in 2010. As The South, they have written new material and released a debut album, Sweet Refrains. I didn’t know what to expect from The South, not being The Beautiful South. Someone asked me if they were a cover band of themselves, but they’re much more than that. Sometimes when a band no longer contains their most famous member it can feel empty – not the real McCoy. Paul Heaton, frontman and songwriter missing and not in action – would this be a problem? I thought it would. Turned out not to be and, judging by the packed venue, it certainly isn’t for their fanbase. What makes the South different from cover bands is the quality of their new material. Not necessarily in the sound, which is gentler, with less of the dark humour and biting observations than the Heaton written lyrics but aside from the hits I did stumble when trying to distinguish the older material from the new, in the tracks that were unfamiliar to me. Right from the second The South appeared on the stage they had their audience going and

20

clapping away. They played two songs back to back with the second showcasing the lively sax and trumpet section and after some well deserved applause, Dave Hemingway stopped for a bit of a chat. Turns out that he came to The Beachcomber on holiday forty seven years ago! The first well known track was one that Dave had been the original lead singer on, albeit with Briana. A Little Time. Lots of whistles after that one. It was a big set and the audience got its money’s worth with twenty two songs. The stand out of the new songs, was the catchy Pigeonhole. The stage was dominated by Alison for the cover track, Dream A Little Dream, with a lovely trumpet solo and Dave joining in later on. The audience loved this and used the lights on their phones as lighters to wave in the air. Alison had joked about pretending to wave lighters in the air for this one so that was quite funny! The well known hits were all there with their first chart single in 1989, Song For Whoever (I love you from the bottom of my pencil case), Woman In The Wall, Rotterdam, Don’t Marry Her and Perfect Ten. How did they go down with the audience? Well the guy standing next to me said, “Please give them 5 stars. They are absolutely brilliant”. He had been a huge fan of The Beautiful South, from the beginning and thought that The South were great. The band all worked well together and the varied tracks gave them all a chance to shine whether it was sax, trumpet, drums, bongos, guitar, bass or keys, At various times I picked out them all, distinctively. It was a good set from the get go but it kept getting better

as the band seemed to find their feet. They were going for it, especially the bongos and they just rose with each song. A tsunami of hits and the final encore just crashed down with Carry On Regardless which really got the audience jumping and left them exhausted but happy. Whether you wish you revisit your youth, the 70s, the 80s or the 90s, nostalgia is alive and kicking and it’s all happening at The Beachcomber!

Laurence Jones has been described by Walter Trout as “a cross between Eric Clapton & Buddy Guy ... a genius” and Classic Rock - Blues Magazine called him “the future of the blues” and the “next big thing”. His reputation as a live musician is second to none and he’ll be bringing his band to The Yardbirds on October 2nd with support from up and coming blues outfit Red Butler, winners of the Best Newcomer Award in Blues Matters Magazine, who have been brewing up a storm with their riveting performances over the past couple of years including a sensational performance at The Great British R&B Festival in Skegness in January 2015 since which their star has been firmly in the ascendant. A busy summer for One Voice and there’s lots more to come!

T

hey know how to have a party in Immingham and they don’t let a little bit of rain put a damper on things so it’s no surprise that this year’s I-Fest (pictured right), which took place at the Blossom Way Club on August 1st was such a great success - thanks in no small part to the generous sponsorship of ABP and the hard work of Elaine Norton and everyone at One Voice. Based in the Immingham Resource Centre, One Voice is a Community Engagement Group, formed in 2009 to work within the communities of Immingham, Habrough and Stallingborough alongside partners such as the Police, Health, Education and Fire & Rescue, to promote and contribute to the physical, social and economic regeneration of these communities. If that sounds a bit of a mouthful then just check the list of their successes which includes the opening of the new skate park, the founding of Studio 1 Community Cinema and a wide variety of youth and community projects and events. Most recently they’ve organised Immingham’s Got Talent (won by 8 year old hoop artiste Olivia (continued on page 18)

A warm and friendly welcome, beautiful surroundings and great food! Whatever the reason for your visit you’ll be glad you chose the ....

Stallingborough Grange Hotel

A

s soon as you drive in through the gates of Stallingborough Grange Hotel you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. Built around a fine 18th century thatched house and set in beautifully landscaped grounds with lawns, an orchard and a lake, the premises have been tastefully extended to provide 42 top quality rooms plus extensive function facilities and the famous Thatcher’s Bar and Restaurant. It’s the perfect venue for a candlelit dinner for two or for weddings and corporate events, just right for weekending or as a base from which to explore the Lincolnshire Wolds, but it isn’t just a business – it’s also a family home. Why does that matter? Because it means that as one of the area’s few remaining

independent hotels Stallingborough Grange can offer guests a personal touch that will make a stay there a real ‘home from home’ experience. The fact that the hotel is outside of town and surrounded by open fields means that very few customers arrive by accident. People who come to the Grange do so by choice – either as return visitors (they get a lot of those) or because of recommendations. So if you choose Stallingborough Grange you can expect top quality service, an excellent night’s rest, restaurant food of exceptional quality and the very warmest of welcomes – all in a setting that’s modern and comfortable while retaining the period charm of the original grange. Lovely.

Situated on the A1173 on the outskirts of Stallingborough village, just 8 miles from Humberside International Airport, 5 miles from the ports of Grimsby and Immingham, 40 mins from Hull and 50 minutes from Lincoln.

STALLINGBOROUGH GRANGE Head chef at Stallingborough Grange is Daniel Blow. Born in Kirton Lindsey and trained locally he started at the hotel fifteen years ago as a sous chef. He’s a passionate advocate of Great British food and his menu reflects his belief that there’s nothing better

than locally sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. “Grimsby fish, Lincolnshire beef and vegetables and Norfolk duck” he explains. “There’s nothing better? We like to take traditional British recipes and put our own distinctive, modern twist on them. Our customers seem to approve.”

Method Boil and mash the potatoes with butter. Combine basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmesan and olive oil in a blender to make a smooth pesto. Season to taste and add some to the warm mash for flavour and colour. Season the peppers with salt and cayenne pepper, drizzle with oil and roast on a tray with the tomatoes. When cooked, blend to a puree and pass through a fine sieve to remove seeds and skins. Drain the cooked crab meat and remove any pieces of shell. Mix in chilli, lime, paprika, chives and enough cream cheese to bind. Season to taste. Place in the fridge to chill until needed. Make a simple beer batter with dark ale and self raising flour. Form crab cakes and coat in seasoned flour. Dip in the batter and deep fry for 1 minute at 200ºC until crisp and golden. Heat up a non stick frying pan on medium heat, add oil, season the fish on both sides and fry for a minute each side or until coloured and place in the oven to cook through for another 3-4 minutes (depending on the thickness of the fish). Add a knob of butter at the end and baste the fish. Season and char grill the courgettes and plate using them as a base. Top with the fish followed by a crab fritter. Place the pesto mash alongside and garnish with fresh pea shoots. Swipe the plate with pepper pesto and serve. Serves two.

The library was initiated in 1996 for preschool children in Sevier County, Tennessee, USA, hometown of country legend Dolly Parton, to guarantee access to books and to inspire parents and carers to read to their children as much as possible. Shhhhhhhh .... it’s Goldilocks the Thief Urban Arts Festival at Grimsby Minster on September 19th. The show which is VERY loosely based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a devised piece of ensemble theatre that FYT’s youth trainees have created from scratch under

the guidance of their artistic director Emma Middleton and dramaturg (it’s a real word, honest, and it’s not rude) Josie Gray. The piece explores issues of food poverty and food theft and the ideal of the Robin Hood figure and is suitable for all ages.

There’s a fascinating autumn of exhibitions planned at Abbey Walk Gallery, concentrating on self portraiture, especially by female artists. The centrepieces of the season will be two iconic photographic self portraits by Sarah Lucas created in the 1990s as part of the then emergent Young British Artists movement, including SelfPortrait with Fried Eggs. The main exhibition will examine how female contemporary artists use self portraiture to examine the shifting nature of female identity and will be accompanied by a display of self portraits by Lincolnshire artists at the Fishing Heritage Centre as well as an installation by Annabel McCourt at Abbey Walk. here’ll be some fantastic skills with the filleting knife on display on August 30th when the British Fish Craft Championships take place in the grounds of Cleethorpes Leisure Centre. Fish Craft Matters! We asked event organiser and former president of the National Federation of Fishmongers Gary Hooper to give us the low down on what the Fish Craft Championships are about. The Peoples: Tell us about the Fish Craft Championships. This year is our 63rd Championships - the Federation celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2012. It’s an important event in our calendar because the skills on display are ones that people often take for granted. Frequently they’re back room skills but when they’re brought centre stage the public are mesmerised by the levels of speed and skill on display. It’s an important event for introducing people to the fishmongering trade, particularly young people. Did you enjoy your visit to Cleethorpes last year? We certainly did. It was a great success and we’ve had lots of good feedback. The Council were superb especially Councillor Mick Burnett who will be much missed. Why do these skills still matter in an age of mechanisation? They matter because there is no substitute for a skilled fishmonger with a knife. Preparation of quality fish just can’t be done by machine. A good fishmonger will know how to prepare over forty species for the table. The public are terrified of bones in fish and it’s our job to use our skills to reassure them. Is there any danger of these skills dying out? The skills will survive so long as there are fishmongers’ shops but we do need more young people coming into the trade. My son George is a fishmonger and we need more like him. I think there’ll be fishmongers for a long time yet to come - and because of that confidence we’ll be opening a new shop in Bedford this month, the first proper fishmongers in the town for a decade. We hear a lot about the need for people to adapt to sustainable fish stocks. What are the fish of the future? People tend to look to premium species like cod, haddock, salmon, tuna but they are often endangered or quite expensive. We need to teach people to switch to more sustainable species like gurnard and dab. You’ll see these species more and more at your local fishmongers. If you were entering one of the competitions at the Championships this year which would be your category? Halibut and shellfish for sure. They’re my specialities - and my favourites too! Thanks very much for your time.

Make the most of sustainable fish!

Crab - one of our favourites and usually caught by low impact methods like potting - we buy ours from Fastline on the North Wall

We’re often told to switch to sustainable fish stocks but just which species are sustainably caught? Here are a few to choose from - all eco friendly and all delicious!

Mackerel - grill it, smoke it, fry it, full of Omega 3 oils, great for barbecues - super tasty and it’s good for you too! Coley, Pollack and Saithe - also called coalfish, once upon a time this was cat’s fish but nowadays top chefs love it - use as an alternative to cod and haddock

Gurnard - they’re not going to win any beauty prizes but they have firm white flesh that holds together and are great for soups and stews

Specialist fish suppliers If you’re looking for top quality fresh fish, then pay a visit to our Wharncliffe Rd shop and you won’t be disappointed! GAS SAFETY WEEK They don’t call Carbon Monoxide the silent killer for nothing. National Gas Safety Week is here again and that means it’s time to give some serious thought to asking yourself ....

Is my home G

Gas Safe?

as Safety Week is an annual safety week to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe. •

• •

• •

• •

• • • •

Check your gas appliances every year. They should be safety checked annually and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tenants – make sure your landlord arranges this. Set a reminder so you don’t forget at www. staygassafe.co.uk Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered. You can find and check an engineer’s registration at www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500. Check your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card. Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly eg. lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. Have an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home. For advice or to find an engineer visit www. GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call the free helpline on 0800 408 5500.

Celebrating the release of their new EP, Moneymaker ......

Sewer Rats

Live at The Matrix 01/08/2015

S

ewer Rats have been making quite a name for themselves lately. They’ve signed for Fluffer Records, played some well reviewed shows at the Shacklewell and other cool venues and now comes the release of their new EP Moneymaker. They’ve already had a London launch party but this is the local version at The Matrix. There’s a great undercard including boisterous hungry hippos kind of pit, Ruby And The Knights, the unboxably crouched low over his bass, fending vitreous See You In Tijuana, Darma off incoming traffic or else climbing up and Cult Mentality and by the time the speaker stack to perch grinning Sewer Rats arrive the crowd is well while it threatens to topple down. stoked and up for the main event and Dean Robbins on drums is inevitably they’re not disappointed because less peregrine but he looks like he’d Sewer Rats deliver a set of the dirtiest, heaviest, most psyched out stonerism that you’ve heard in a long time, songs that start slow and uncoil themselves with deliberate menace, loaded with feedback, searing guitar riffs, huge drums and basslines that set the room vibrating. Luke Morris’s vocals are just about the rawest I’ve ever heard. Imagine the love child of Lemmy from Motorhead and a grizzly bear, kept in the dark for years, fed on broken glass and Scotch Bonnets and that particularly horrible cheap kebab meat that smells like sewage. Stub a few cigarettes out on it. Kick it occasionally. Give it a microphone and tell it to sing. be up and bouncing off people and The show that features considerable walls given half a chance. levels of raw energy and male torso. Sometimes words seem a bit small. Granted it’s warm in The Matrix This one of those times. The Sewer but there’s clearly something about Rats sound like something being Sewer Rats that’s best appreciated born, growing and crawling out of a shirtless. They certainly have an primeval swamp, developing limbs impressive gallery of tatts to show and vocal chords, and of course off and their ink photographs rather acquiring guitars and drum kit along well, especially since they are a band the way. They are very loud, but that incapable of staying still for more than doesn’t tell you much and they play thirty seconds at a time. Luke Morris on with a sweat drenched frenzy that guitar prowls his end of the stage like makes them gleam in the stage lights he’s looking for a gap in the fence while and rapidly infects everyone in the Iain Morrison spends most of the show room. I spend most of the set hiding getting stuck right in to an extremely behind the speakers (except when

they’re being used as a climbing wall), because I’m a coward and because I can’t afford to replace my cameras but when they finish I feel like I’ve been punched in the face with a music clad fist. Moneymaker, whose entry into the world we are here to celebrate is an equally invigorating thing – five tracks of bile and blues, menace and caress, guaranteed to annoy the neighbours, damage the foundations of your house and make your eyeballs bleed. My favourite track is Devil’s Blues which has them paying homage to Sabbath and Zeppelin but every cut is worth a listen – this is a band that’s going places fast. At the end of the show the band are mobbed by the assembled company and it’s pretty clear that they are now officially world famous in Grimsby. Just the rest of the planet to go then and that shouldn’t be too hard. When I roll in at home with the remains of my chips and half a can of Vimto I’m just in time to catch the last half of The Meat Loaf Story on some channel I’ve never heard of before. Talk about serendipity. I switch on just as our hero, suffering one of his periodic outbreaks of bankruptcy, is laid across his bed with his two children, Vegetable Roll and Nut Cutlet. “The trouble is,” he says to the adorable golden haired moppets, “nobody likes Daddy’s music.” “I do” replies Nut Cutlet. “It’s loud.” So there you go. I’m not going to take notes at gigs anymore. I’m just going to submit the first thing I hear on telly when I get home. Sorted. Sewer Rats. I like them. You will too. They’re loud.

The generational differences are clear but although their tastes are different they don’t clash but rather complement each other. John is a perfectionist and sees his work in terms of a series of problems that have to eliminated until he reaches a point at which he can say “that's it, it's finished.” When we talk about gigging it is clear that his self-criticism is a powerful force. Japanese Anemone

a burst of white and pink blooms to light up a shaded corner September’s flower of the month from the Horticultural Trades Association are the Japanese Anemones, also known as Windflowers. They’re clump forming herbaceous perennials that bloom in late summer and autumn producing pink and white flowers, about 5cm across with sculpted sepals and golden yellow stamens Japanese is a misnomer really because, as the plant’s scientific name Anemone hupehensis indicates their place of origin is Hupeh province in China, but they have been popular plants in Japanese gardens for many hundreds of years, which probably gave rise to the confusion. They’re an adaptable plant, happiest in light shade but amenable to sun as well but they won’t tolerate badly drained soil, so dig in plenty of organic matter, (farmyard manure is ideal), to keep the roots aerated and moist in summer but dry in winter. With their multitude of flowers they’re great for lighting up a dark corner of the garden and the bonus is that they often spread by themselves, creating new clumps which can be lifted and planted elsewhere, rather than having to divide the parent plant. Because of this propensity to spread they are regarded as invasive in some areas but they are slow growing and shouldn’t be a problem in most gardens. Japanese anemones are a particular favourite of plant photographer Jason Ingram who says of them “Japanese anemones are extremely photogenic flowers which brighten up the garden in late summer or autumn, producing simple saucers in white and various shades of pink. They are a ‘must have’ border plant for the Autumn and put on a fantastic display in the period where most gardens are starting to look tired and over. I love that their beauty adds a whole new dimension of colour and texture to my garden.” So if your garden is starting to look a little bit tired now that summer is past try taking a look at the Japanese Anemone - they could be just what you need to make the most of the autumn garden.

IS YOUR CAR ABOUT TO BECOME A LIVING ROOM?

WHERE WILL YOU PUT THE GOLDFISH?

C

ars have been around for a long time and while the outsides have changed a lot over the years the interiors have been remarkably static. Two chairs in front, a bench at the back, dashboard, wheel, gear stick if needed, hand brake, they’ve been in the same positions pretty much since dinosaurs first learned to look in the mirror and signal before moving out. But in an era when it looks as though cars are soon going to drive themselves and steering wheels will

be a thing of the past – what will your car interior look like then? Well the chances are it’ll look a lot like your living room. After all if you don’t have to bother concentrating on the road you might as well have a comfy sofa, a television, wifi and facilities for making a nice cup of tea. Otherwise what are you going to do on those long journeys? Read a book and talk to each other? I don’t think so. The way of things to come may well be that displayed by the ExhangE vehicle developed by Swiss motor innovations team Rinspeed and British flexible work space providers Regus. As shown in the images on this page the vehicle features front seats that swivel to face the back and enough gadgetry to keep even

the most tech hungry passenger satisfied. In fact it turns the humble car into a mobile office - you can work on your devices, teleconference and give presentations all without leaving the comfort of your seat. If that doesn’t sound like something you’d fancy then you’d best beware because this isn’t just a piece of science fiction. This is stuff that’s coming soon, probably within the next ten to fifteen years. After all, many of us choose to pack our cars with gadgetry already. Quite apart from music systems that threaten to deafen anyone within 20 feet there’s an amazing range of things that you can buy to plug into your cigarette lighter socket. Mobile phone chargers and SatNavs of course but also massage cushions, kettles, heated blankets, HDTVs, internet routers, cookers and even fridge freezers! Why would anyone bother going home at all? You could just live in your car - as suggested by Charlie Harper of the UK Subs, whose image you’ll find, by pure coincidence, overleaf. So much for the plugins, but of course there’s a whole other category of tech that we fill our cars with – the handheld stuff, chiefly the ubiquitous smart phone. So dependent are we on our palm top communications devices we would never think of going for a drive without them, and it seems as though many of us can’t resist using them either. Recent research by the Institute of Advanced Motoring reveals that ten percent of drivers have taken a selfie while driving within the past month. For younger drivers this rises to twenty percent, with men worse offenders than women. It’s not just being snap happy though. Eight per cent of drivers admitted to driving while using a video calling application such as FaceTime and Skype to make and receive video calls, rising to 16 per cent among 18 to 24 year olds. 15 percent of young drivers admitted to watching TV catch up at the wheel and 35 percent of drivers had accessed the internet. And if all that doesn’t scare you then this might - the number of drivers given penalty points for using a phone at the wheel fell by more than 40 per cent in 2014! All of which goes to prove that our relationships with out vehicles are already undergoing a revolution and it’s a process that’s only going to accelerate as new technologies emerge and become first popular and then essential to our lives. Where will it all end? Anybody’s guess. After all who would have predicted twenty years ago that we would be driving around under the guidance of a woman that sounds like a slightly annoyed alien or that we’d ask our phones to remind us where we left our car keys? Welcome to the future.

From computers and phones to mirrors always something to distract us at the wheel!
