Get the best out of your car with

Custom Engine Remapping at Kingsway Tyres

Kingsway Tyres of Immingham have an outstanding reputation for selling and fitting tyres but they do much more than that. Their qualified mechanics can service your vehicle to any level, using original parts if required and they also offer air-con recharging. The newest addition to their range of services is custom engine remapping and we had a chat to Regional Manager Tony Briggs to find out more. So what is engine remapping? Most modern car engines are controlled by computer but when they arrive new from the manufacturers they may not be set up to run at their best. A trained technician with the right equipment can adjust the settings to improve performance. What improvements in performance can a car owner expect from remapping? Remapping can change the feel and responsiveness of a car and at Kingsway we have invested in the state of the art equipment and training allowing us to remap almost

any vehicle with the options of either maximised economy or performance or a blend of both. Our maps are not generic – they’re individualised to suit the customer’s preferences and style of driving. Remaps are not all the same -we only offer quality and no short cuts are taken. We can also provide a full rolling road readout, (although you’ll need to make an appointment for that). How long does it take? Just give us a ring and book an appointment and we’ll have your vehicle back to you same day. And you’ll still be offering great deals on tyres, air-con and servicing? As always. You can count on Kingsway for top value and service same as always!

• • • • •

Why and when is it important to use original parts when servicing a vehicle? Once upon a time new car warranties were only valid so long as you used the dealer’s own garage for servicing and repairs but in 2002 this type of restriction was declared unlawful so now the work can be carried out by an independent garage as long as they use manufacturer approved parts and correctly follow the manufacturer’s service schedule. Of course if your car is no longer under warranty then you may well choose to save money by using generic parts, but you can be sure that either way Kingsway only use quality parts when repairing and servicing your vehicle.

Scartho Welcome to

part village, part suburb, but always a nice place to live

Hello and welcome to our Scartho feature edition, taking a look not just at the many shops and businesses in the area but also at the many community ventures which help make Scartho such a thriving community and a great place to live and do business. Scartho is one of the oldest and most historic parts of town. In 1086 the Domesday Book listed the village of Scarhou, which apparently means ‘the mound by the gap’ in old Norse, and St Giles’ church predates that by many years. The present church tower is Saxon and some experts have suggested that its stonework bears evidence of burning – probably the result of a Viking raid. Whether or not Scartho is still a village in its own right or a suburb of Grimsby is a matter of debate but Scartho was definitely a separate entity up until the end of the World War II until urban expansion throughout the fifties and sixties caused Grimsby to swell and absorb its smaller neighbour. With open country on either side, pathways to Bradley Woods to the west and Weelsby Woods to the east and a wide range of high quality shops, salons, cafes and restaurants clustered around the fork Scartho still retains the village feel, especially when the famous cherry tree is in bloom and you can sit outside Florence’s cafe in the Spring sunlight sipping a cup of tea or coffee and watching the world go by.

One thing that’s certain is that there’s a huge amount of community spirit in the area. The Community Centre on Waltham Road is testament to that as is the thriving Scartho Community Library, both examples of important local facilities that were faced with closure but which have been saved thanks to the efforts of determined residents. Because local people refused to let them disappear these two centres now play host to events ranging from diet and fitness classes to mosaic making sessions and from Alzheimers memory cafes to bingo and rummy clubs. If you add in the wide range of activities that take place in the St Giles church hall it’s clear that although Scartho might seem quiet, in fact there’s always something going on.

ith its smart new premises on Waltham Road, Scartho Community Centre is a testament to the community spirit and local pride that makes Scartho village such a nice place to live. The centre was formerly located round the corner in Springfield Rd and when it was scheduled for closure due to budget cuts in 2002 there was a public outcry and a volunteer committee was formed to take over the running of the centre. In 2006 they moved into their present premises to make way for the new medical centre and since then they’ve built up a programme of activities that means there’s always plenty going on with something to suit almost everyone. The business was established in 2013 by Graham and Karen Brown, both born and bred in the village, and they’re assisted behind the counter by their son Alex. In just over two years they have gained an enviable reputation for quality and value, winning gold at The Lincolnshire Poacher Awards for their gluten free Pork, Apple and Cider Sausages as well as nine silver medals and four bronze.

Proprietor Anne Fytche (picture above on the right) took over in 2013, naming her new venture after her mother, and set about creating the kind of cafe that she had dreamed of owning all her life, a welcoming oasis of calm and, of course, great cakes. There’s always a wide range of delicious sandwiches, panini on offer as well but the speciality of the house is the famous high tea which brings customers in from all over the area. adies and gentlemen welcome to the churchyard of St Giles as you’ve never seen it before. These pictures, taken soon after a heavy snowfall, are the work of photographer Mike Pounder who used to be a policeman and forensic photographer in Herefordshire before moving to Scartho. While in the police he became a member of the British Institute of Professional Photography and a Qualified Imaging Scientist with Royal Photographic Society. He also obtained a degree in commercial photography from Grimsby Institute. Mike’s main interest is now in infra red photography, using modified digital cameras to block light from the visible spectrum from entering the camera. The result is marvellously clear and sharp imaging with ominous dark skies, silvery white foliage, gleaming snow and dreamlike landscapes. Mike has been kind enough to let us use some of his images, including the shot above, looking across the churchyard towards the oldest building in Grimsby - St Giles Church, whose tower is believed to date from just before the Norman Conquest. You can find more of his work on his website at mikepounder.wix.com

“Scartho Gem”

It’s not every village that can claim to have a plant named after it but here is clematis ‘Scartho Gem’, a product of the famous Pennell’s breeding programme that ran from the 1950s through to the 1970s and gave the horticultural world some of its favourites including clematis ‘Walter Pennell’, ‘Bracebridge Star’ and the gorgeous mauve tinted ‘Vyvyan Pennell”. Scartho Gem was bred in 1962 by Walter Pennell and

it flowers in late spring. The sepals have a darker central bar giving the flowers a bicolored effect. The anthers and filaments are pinkish red. If you’re thinking of planting one in your garden you’ll be glad to here that it’s generally held to pretty easy to look after. Although it prefers full sun it is tolerant of shade and is also a good choice for hot areas. So come on Scartho. Get digging. Photo courtesy of Pennells

“A REAL HOME FROM HOME”

PERSONAL CHOICE AND INDIVIDUAL CARE MATTER “It’s a lovely place. There’s always lots to do and all the staff are wonderful.” - Edwina

“The Meadows is a real home from home - good food and excellent accommodation.” - Mac

T

THAT’S THE MEADOWS PHILOSOPHY

he Meadows is a thirty six bed care home on Louth Road, catering for those who require residential care and dementia care. It’s a warm, comfortable and welcoming environment, part of the Shire Care Homes Group, and like all of Shire’s homes it’s operated by a team who believe strongly that meaningful activity and respect for personal choice are the keys to a long and happy life. Manager Angela and Activities Co-ordinators Jeannie and Cheryl ensure that there are lots of activities for residents to take part in, including craft sessions, exercise classes (including the very popular Tai Chi sessions) and individual hobbies like painting and knitting. There are regular trips out, for shopping, restaurant visits or excursions to local places of interest and The Meadows regularly plays host to visitors ranging from singers and musicians to the

pet therapy team. There are several hairdressers who visit, a massage and Reiki therapist and a team from Grimsby College who come to provide beauty therapies. Above all the team at The Meadows make sure that they get to know every resident as an individual so they can ensure that their care programme is tailored to their own special needs. That’s the essential first step towards making a home into a home from home!

From books to bingo by way of tai chi, knitting and mosaic tiling - there’s a lot going on at ....

Scartho Community Library W

e’ve noted elsewhere that if there’s one thing Scartho has in abundance it’s community spirit, so we thought it would be good to draw your attention to another success story – the Scartho Community Library. Scartho Library closed on Christmas Eve 2014 but it reopened in November 2015, rescued thanks to the efforts of local charity Foresight as part of their Older Persons’ Project. It’s not just a library though. There’s much more than that going including Tai Chi, Dancercise, Chair Based Exercise, Feet Up Foot Care, Bingo and Knit and Knatter and they’re starting up a new local history memories project too. To set the ball rolling there’s a talk at 2pm on February 8th with Ron Borsberry exploring the history of The Streets Of Scartho. That’s highly recommended, as is their new mosaic workshop which starts on February 3rd and runs for six months with sessions on the first Wednesday of every month. There are two sessions on each day, and they cost £12 for one session or £15 for both. Oh yes, and they do a really good cup of coffee and there are some delicious cakes. I expect they do tea as well. You should pop in but you can also find them online at www.scarthoe.wix.com/scartholibrary and on Facebook and Twitter.

MOBILITY

Once upon a time, not so long ago, mobility products were just meant to do a job. It didn’t occur to anyone that they could also be stylish or colourful or a pleasure to own. But nowadays things have changed and if you know where to look you can find scooters with style and canes with charisma. And the place to start looking is Cleethorpes Mobility Centre where they believe that just because something is functional doesn’t mean it has to be dull.

Mobile In Style

with Cleethorpes Mobility Centre

Take the new Rollzmotion rollator/wheelchair pictured above. It’s available in bright yellow or deep purple and it switches between functions in seconds with just a couple of clicks. Ideal for those who like a stroll but may need to rest sometimes. Also new on the scene is the fantastic Solax Easylife auto folding scooter. An excellent vehicle for a comfortable ride, with a top speed of 4mph and a range of 10 miles on a single charge, it can fold itself as small as a suitcase for storage and carriage, all at the touch of a button on the remote control. How clever is that? Perfect for putting in the back of your car or taxi. And it’s not just new technology that can benefit from a makeover! Take a look at these canes from Classic Canes. Easy to use and fold away and also brightly coloured and patterned to suit your outfit (or your mood). Whatever you need by way of mobility or accessibility aids you’ll always find an excellent selection and good advice at the Cleethorpes Mobility Centre. They stock beds by Patterson Medical, furniture by Cosi Chair, slippers by Cosyfeet and many other products by top manufacturers. All under one roof and they always offer service with a smile!

ARMED FORCES DAY

The Peoples talks to Alex Baxter, Armed Forces Champion for NE Lincolnshire and the man in charge of preparations for Armed Forces Day 2016 You’ve been a councillor for Scartho and Mayor of NE Lincolnshire but for many people you’re best known as a champion of the rights of Armed Forces personnel and for your involvement with the Armed Forces Day event. Do you have a military background? I served in the navy as an intelligence officer and subsequently moved on to take positions with various global companies in the security equipment business. I spent some time in Rochester, New York as CEO of a company designing computer based training systems for operators of security scanning equipment. In those days security guards were starting to use high tech equipment like CT scanners, which were being applied to aviation and maritime security use for the first time. They were using the same technology as

a hospital consultant but while the doctor can take all the time they need and will usually only be concentrating on saving one life at a time the guard at the airport is protecting the lives of perhaps three hundred lives on a plane by scanning people and baggage and will only have on average twenty seconds to do their job, so it was very important that they were trained to a very high standard. There are still companies based in NE Lincolnshire who develop these kinds of technologies and they are recognised as the world’s leading experts at what they do. You then became involved in the development of the scanner equipment itself? I left the USA to become President of Smiths Detections’ UK civil business and Director of their UK military business. Our main business was body scanners and screening

and educational facilities and in my year as Mayor I was overwhelmed by the amount of talent we have. You’d have to go a long way to find that combination anywhere else and I think that is why businesses are increasingly being attracted here. You were very much involved with the implementation of the Armed Forces Community Covenant. What was your role there?

equipment for hold baggage and for cabin baggage. My head office was in Wiesbaden and I enjoyed every minute I was there. I then set up a global events team because there was a synergy between the production of the equipment and actually doing the screening. People would say to us “Yes, we know we need the equipment but how do we use it, where do we put it, how do we determine the threat level?” and we would go and help them.

Having worked all over the world what made you decide to settle down in Grimsby? My wife is a Grimbarian and I was very glad to come back here. NE Lincs, Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham are marvellous places. The people are outstanding and although I’ve visited lots of spectacular places if I had to choose one place to live I’d choose here. We have a different kind of warmth. It comes from the way people treat each other. It frustrates me that we focus so much on negative stories when those are such a small part of the whole. We should be promoting the positive elements. Our area is on a high right now. We have great skills

The Community Covenant is a very important thing, very dear to our hearts. It’s a promise that the country will not abandon the veterans who have done a very important job and done it well. They have put their lives on the line and that service deserves recognition. What we did in this area was to develop a set of pathways with respect to access to housing, welfare and health care, much of it based on the principle of no disadvantage. This is the premise that says that a member of the Armed Forces should never be disadvantaged by that status. These systems can help deal with major issues like health, housing and pensions but they will also look after things like issues with medals. To a civilian medals may just look decorative but they are very important to the people who have won them, particularly in the years after they have left the service and the various agencies can offer help to those who have lost or have not received their medals. This is important because irrespective of your political perspective you have to acknowledge that our forces do an amazing job and because of them we punch well above our weight as a country, with a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and respect all round the world.

24

ARMED FORCES DAY

You were councillor for Scartho for four years. What made you decide to go into politics? I wanted to understand how the political dynamic within the borough worked because that was essential to our work with the Covenant and I was pleasantly surprised to find that everyone agreed with the principles of the covenant and it was adopted unanimously and has been upheld by both parties ever since and I think I can say that we have exceeded expectations in delivery. How did you become involved with Armed Forces Day? When I came back I met an old friend from who was President of the Royal Air Force Association and I attended Armed Forces Day. Afterwards he asked me if I'd like to get involved with organising it because of my experience with event organisation. So we decided to work with the local authority to see if we could build of the profile of the event in this area. Where did the idea of bringing the national event to Cleethorpes originate? Well we had the organisational skills to pull it together but we could never have done it without the support of serving soldiers and veterans and their families. This is one of the few towns where poppies are put on street signs named after fallen service personnel. It’s about not forgetting. The National Armed Forces Day is the ultimate show in town. The eyes of the world will be on us. Members of the royal family attend because they always support the Armed Forces and this is a day when political

divisions evaporate. Because it isn’t about putting soldiers in uniform on the streets to be admired, it’s about gathering together so we can say thank you to them for the service they have done for the nation. Will the National event be much bigger than previous local Armed Forces Days? Well Hull has the City of Culture, and that’s supposed to be the best think since sliced bread but I can tell you that the National Armed Forces Day 2016 will be the biggest and best thing that this borough has ever seen. The biggest thing that has happened in town since Queen Victoria opened the Royal Dock in 1854.

In practical terms how do you plan to expand the event? It always seems full on the day already. We have a plan but before we can make it public we have to discuss it with the Ministry of Defence and others. We’re in a good position because this is the eighth National Armed Forces Day and we have a long history of organising the event. This was our third bid for the national event. The first time we bid it was tongue in cheek to a degree. We were full of enthusiasm but we lacked some experience, but we learned all the time. In particular we learned how to fund the event, because it isn’t government funded and it has to be self sustaining. We’ve had excellent support from local companies, like Dong Energy and the Ramsden’s Group, to name but two. Our job is to balance the books and make sure that everything is done properly to make sure that this is an event that will go down in history as the biggest and best day the borough has ever seen, which I can promise you it will be. We don’t doubt that at all. Many thanks for giving us your time.

WHY NOT TAKE A TEST DRIVE?

very parent wants their child to excel at school but sometimes it can feel like we just pack them off each day and hope for the best. It’s difficult to know what practical help you can give them to ensure that they reach their full potential but one practical step that can work wonders is to enrol them in the Kumon programme. Kumon originated in Japan and is now a wordwide educational phenomenon. The Grimsby Centre is at Healing Village Hall and is run by Sarah Prior (pictured left receiving an award to mark her first thirteen years as a Kumon instructor). The aim of the programme is to help students become advanced learners with positive attitudes to study by boosting their self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges and problems by themselves. Check out the Kumon website at www.kumon.co.uk for more information. Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Sarah provides the guidance and encouragement that students need to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Of course Kumon are aware that every child is different and their programme is not a one size fits all system, nor is it a quick fix. Their individualised programmes allow students to progress at their own pace and in addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind set and skills for learning. Sessions take place between 3.30 and 5.30pm with students dropping in for about twenty minutes, once or twice a week and there’s a free two week test drive available in February to see if Kumon can work for you and your child.

HOW WOULD KUMON FIT IN WITH YOUR BUSY LIFESTYLE? Take a two week free test drive in February and find out. Contact Sarah on 01472 884104 to book a place. Limited availability.

f you’re a dog lover with room in your life for an occasional canine visitor then you may well be just the kind of person that Claire Dutton of Barking Mad, the dog sitting experts, is looking for. “Our job is to bring together owners and hosts to ensure that dogs can be boarded with just the right people in exactly suitable homes”, Claire explains. “It may allow the owner to go on holiday or even into hospital and it’s so much friendlier and nicer than putting a dog into kennels. With Barking Mad owners can be sure that their beloved best friend will be really well cared for and exercised in a home from home environment.” So who can be a Barking Mad host? “The most important qualification for hosts is that they are real dog lovers”, says Claire. “Perhaps people who have been owners in the past but who are now unable to make the financial or time commitment required but who would enjoy some canine company from time to time.” Claire is a fan herself, owner of labradors Paddy and Isabelle (you can find pictures of them on the new website). She was first introduced to Barking Mad eight years ago when bereavement left her without anyone to care for Paddy while she went on holiday. She was so impressed with the service, a few months later she became their area representative. Claire visits all prospective owners and hosts and gets to know them and their animals, and the special needs and characteristics of each, so that she can find perfect matches for everybody. She also checks homes and gardens for suitability and security. Nothing is left to chance in ensuring that everything runs just so, because it’s the happiness of the guest dog that is of paramount importance. If you’re an owner looking for accommodation for your dog or if you’d like to be a Barking Mad host call Claire on the number below and find out what’s involved. Have fun and enjoy the walkies!

Do you miss the joy of pet ownership? Here’s just the thing to make you feel better. With Barking Mad you can look after someone’s dog while they’re away.

COLLECTIBLES

Time for a clear out? Tired of the clutter? Maybe you should realise some of the value you’ve got stashed away. But what to sell and what to skip to make the most of the ....

CASH IN YOUR

attic?

The tin plate toy robot reached its heyday in the 1950s and models from that era are very collectible. Big names include the Japanese Horikawa company but US models are collectable too, especially Ideal’s remote control Robert the Robot with light-up eyes, swinging arms and the ability to walk and talk.

Vintage clothes are super cool right now, just ask our good friend Jodie at I Luv It I Really Do in Wellowgate. If you’ve got a stash of 70s shirts that threaten eye damage, or some chic 50s swing skirt dresses then drive those moths off and turn them into cash!

Retro guitars are big business. Go for the famous names and the classic styles and be wary of modern reproductions. Bob Dylan’s sunburst Fender Stratocaster sold at auction for nearly a million dollars so get searching!

Everybody loves teddies. It’s the law. Look for long limbed, snouty, hump backed, straw filled examples and famous names like Steiff.

Same every year. You haul the tree and the decorations back up to the loft and while you’re up there you start to wonder Just where and when did I acquire all this stuff? If your house is like ours you probably have boxes and cases packed with old clothes that you secretly know you’ll never wear again, unwanted Christmas pressys, technology and gadgets that went out with the dinosaurs, books you never could be bothered to finish. Some books you couldn’t even start. Time to get up there and start your spring clean early with a really good chucking out session but don’t just send it all to the tip because there may be gold in them there hills of junk. Here are a few suggestions for how to strike it rich.

It’s good to sell books because it’s so much easier than reading them. A first edition Harry Potter can be worth thousands if it’s in good condition but a mint condition 1902 Hound Of The Baskervilles will fetch anything up to £100,000! The original 1937 edition of The Hobbit is worth about £25,000 but it casts an evil spell on everyone who owns it and has to be thrown into a volcano.

New or old, vinyl is cool again. The most valuable record of all time is That’ll Be The Day/In Spite Of All The Danger by the Quarrymen which could be worth in excess of £100,000 but more realistically The Sex Pistols 1977 God Save The Queen/No Feelings is worth about £10,000.

And just to prove that the world has gone a little mad - VHS cassettes. It’s the genre fans who drive the market here - horror and sci-fi are what sell and the worst films tend to be the rarest and therefore the most valuable. Tales From The Quadead Zone, a 1987 straight to VHS horror about a zombie clown is the most sought after tape of all simply because it’s so awful. And for the record there are also big prices paid for old computer games, rare Lego bricks (really) and even for 1970s cereal boxes and their contents. Yuk.

Take care of your roof and save money!

oof repairs don’t come cheap so it makes sense to take a few minutes to have a good look at the state of your tiles. If there are any problems you may be able nip them in the bud and save yourself a pile of cash. So what should you be on the look out for? Most importantly check for missing or damaged tiles. It's relatively inexpensive to get one or two replaced and left unattended these things only get worse. Check for signs of fungus or algae. If your roof is starting to look a bit green then copper control strips or gutter guards may be called for. Look out for debris on the roof. Sticks and leaves can damage tiles, encourage algal growth and clog gutters. Trim any branches that are hanging over the roof to prevent damage and keep squirrels away. Examine the flashing to make sure it's solid. If not, re-caulk and scrub the area clean before resealing. Look out for cracked mortar or caulking around joints and chimneys. If there are signs of deterioration, they need to be dealt with as soon as possible. If you see any signs of leaking, like dark spots on the ceiling, mould or damp in your attic, take action immediately. And if you don’t have the skills to take all of this on yourself then get in touch with a reliable roofing expert like our good friends at Saxby Roofing as soon as possible. Leaks get worse, not better, so it’s better to spend a few pounds on roof maintenance now rather than a lot on a big repair later on.

Would you know what to do in the event of a gas leak? Gas is dangerous. No prizes there, we all know that. But perhaps we don’t all know what to do in the event of a leak. So here’s some good, straightforward advice from the nice people at Gas Safe Register.

• •

• • • •

35

Get fresh air immediately. Open all doors and windows to ventilate the room Switch off the suspect appliance and do not use it again until it has been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer Turn off the gas supply at the mains Call the National Gas Emergency number. In this area it’s 0800 111 999 If you’re feeling ill visit your GP or the hospital immediately Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to check and fix the appliance Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on gas appliances, (including of course our good friends CA Norman and Ian Dalton). By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. It has replaced CORGI registration. So before you let anyone work on your gas system ask to see their Gas Safe Register card and keep yourself safe.

EASTER

Sweet teeth at the ready! Time for some

Easter Eggcelence!

E

aster is on its way and the shops have been full of chocolate eggs since the day after Christmas - so you’ve had plenty of time to choose what you’ll be giving to your nearest and dearest this year, although of course we’d recommend that you take a look at what’s on offer down at Sweet Indulgence in St Peter’s Avenue before you make a final decision. Eggs have been a part of Easter festivities for a long time and they were popular even in preChristian times. Decorated ostrich eggs more than five thousand years old have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs and some examples from Africa are thought to go back tens of thousands of years! In the Christian tradition the giving of eggs at Easter celebrates new life, recalling that Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the dead. The empty shell is said to represent the empty tomb from which he emerged. There is a wide variety of decoration techniques in use around the world. In the Orthodox church eggs are usually dyed red to symbolise the blood of Christ, while in Eastern

Europe a batik wax resist process is use to add bright colours to the shells. And once you’ve decorated your eggs what to do you do with them? In Germany they tie them with ribbon (easier said than done we reckon) and hang them from trees. Can’t see that catching on round here. In many countries parents tell their children the Easter Bunny has hidden their chocolate eggs and they race to find them round the house or garden. Meanwhile the parents sit in the house eating all the eggs themselves and laughing deviously. In the United States egg rolling is a popular Easter game and one of the most well known events is held annually on the White House lawn with children and parents pushing their eggs across the grass with wooden spoons under the watchful eye of the President.

In many countries there is a tradition of egg battling where children hold the eggs and smash them together with the least damaged egg being declared the winner. In the North of England this is called egg tapping or egg jarping and the eggs are called Pace eggs. There are also dancing celebrations where eggs are scattered on the ground and children and adults attempt to dance through them without causing any damage. If you fancy pushing the boat out this year you might care there are plenty of claimants to the title of World’s Most Expensive Easter Egg. Most are really jewellery but the priciest real chocolate egg is the Giant Golden Speckled egg by William Curley, priced at £7,000 and full of chocolates with flavours like Japanese black vinegar, and juniper and cassis. And if that’s not enough there’s a hand carved $66,000 Easter Bunny with diamond eyes. Sounds perfect, we’ll have two.

VALENTINES

Flowers, chocolates, romantic evenings with the one you love. That's what Valentine's day is all about, right? Well, maybe not because the origin of this holiday for the expression of love really isn't that romantic at all. St Valentine was a third century Roman priest who was executed on the orders of the Emperor Claudius II. Very little is known about him other than that, and the hagiographers, (good word that - people who know about saints) just say that he is “revered by men but his deeds are known only to God” which is a posh way of saying he's a

saint but we don't know why. His saint's day is now February 14th but he has had several others along the way. Valentines Day is now celebrated all round the world, mostly due to the initiative of enterprising chocolate manufacturers. In Japan and South Korea it's mostly a giving gifts to men by women day (which is nice) with a wide range of chocolate gifts available to convey different messages to all the men in your life. In Taiwan however it's the men who do the giving. In Scandinavia it's traditional for men to write poems for all the

women thy know and then the recipients have to guess who wrote which poem. Fraught with danger that, but possibly not as much as the French ‘loterie d'amour’ which involved men going into all the houses that lay opposite their own and either laying claim to the women there or rejecting them. Later in the evening the rejected women gathered round a bonfire and it's hardly surprising the government banned the practice altogether. Whatever you're planning for have a good one and be nice to each other because that’s what really matters. That and the chocolates.

A new exhibition is on the way to the Fishing Heritage Centre, which will feature artefacts, images and video from the team’s work and bring people up to speed with progress so far. Grimsby’s Lost Ships will be at the Cafe Gallery from July 5th to September 25th and as well as looking at the exhibits there’ll be the chance to become involved with the project, which is still seeking volunteers. You can find out more at the group’s website www.shipwrecksoftheriverhumber.co.uk or via their Facebook page.

This includes vessels such as steam trawler Fittonia (pictured above right), a British registered steam fishing vessel owned by the NE Steam Fishing Co which was mined when 27 miles off Spurn Head on the 2nd September 1914. She sunk with the loss of seven lives. The steam trawler Nellie Bruce (pictured top) was sunk by submarine off Beru Fjord Iceland in October 1916. Since 2014 a group of dedicated divers from the Humber Vikings BSAC, backed up by a team of shore based researchers have been engaged in searching for and investigating the wrecks of many of these vessels and they’ve had some remarkable successes already including the discovery of the wreck of The Alberta, lost in 1916. The group hopes to locate 300 of the missing trawlers and are also searching for the wreck on HMS Cobra, one of only two specially designed, new turbine powered Torpedo boat destroyers built in 1899 which sank after

Showtime will be Saturday 19th March at 2.30pm and 7.30pm with tickets at £5 (£3 concessions and £15 for a family ticket). ROLLER DERBY

Fancy a spot of organised mayhem? Roller Derby may be just what you need!

I

f you're not familiar with Roller Derby then it can seem somewhat confusing at first. You have two teams, with a maximum of fourteen players each, who participate in groups of five, skating the same way around an oval track. One person from each team is designated a jammer and they're identifiable by the red star on their helmet. Their job is to lap all the other players. The other four on each team are blockers and a pivot (but I’m not sure about the difference there), and their job is to help their own jammer while attempting to hold up the opposition jammer by use of body contact and changing positions. It all sounds pretty straightforward right? Right. Then you have to add in some mayhem. Just a pinch. Well quite a lot actually. This is definitely not a sport for the faint hearted. It’s scary just watching. In the 1950s to 70s it was a big bucks spectator sport in America but it fell out of favour until a grass roots revival in recent years, led particularly by female skaters. Our local teams are ladies’ side the Grim Reavers and a recently initiated men's team - the Brothers Grim. If you think roller derby might be just the bone crunching sporting experience you need here are some pictures from their recent invitational tournament at Grimsby Leisure Centre to help you decide. It was named The Big Block Theory and featured teams named after characters from the TV show. I do have the scores but to be honest with you it wasn't about the scores. It was about the mayhem. You can get in touch with the Reavers via their website - www.grimreavers.com - or through social media. Take your mayhem boots.

motoring Look after your battery this winter and it’ll look after you!

W

inter can be tough on auto electrics and when your car won’t start it’s usually an issue with your battery. Cold and damp weather plays havoc with batteries because electrical systems have to work a lot harder at this time of year and starter motors require all the current they can get to turn over the engine on these cold mornings. Cold temperatures affect the chemical process inside the battery, slowing it down and reducing the battery’s ability to hold the charge. Older, weaker batteries will often already have reduced performance and cold temperatures will reduce this further, to the point where the battery will go flat very quickly. To avoid trouble remember to switch off lights, wipers and heater before stopping your engine at the end of your journey. This prevents any unnecessary drain on the battery the next time you start up but still check again that everything is switched off before turning that key. Avoid using heaters, heated screens and heated seats for longer than you have to as they all put high demands on the vehicle’s battery. Check that no interior lights, including boot lights are left on and no accessories such as phone chargers have been left connected. Some SatNavs, DVD players and iPods can also drain the battery if left connected. Park your vehicle in a garage whenever possible and get your battery tested, particularly if it is over three years old. And make sure you have some jump leads in the boot, just in case the worst happens. Maybe some bus fare too just to be on the safe side.

Memories of old Grimsby on display at the Heritage Centre

A

rtists can take inspiration from all kinds of things. For some it's rolling countryside or the open sea or scenes from antiquity but for artist Carol Morton, whose new exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Centre, (entitled Then and When, Here and About - open until April 3rd) it's local history and memories of her childhood that spark her imagination.

FROM

Carol's street scenes depict everyday Grimsby life from Victorian times through to the early post war years and although no one could accuse her of having rose tinted spectacles it still seems that she is painting images of time when people were friendlier and communities stronger. In her paintings children skip in the street, Riverhead carters draw water for tired horses, a chimney sweep passes on his way home from what looks to have been a busy day, his brushes on his shoulder. Raked funnelled steam trawlers take on ice, jostling alongside the last of the tall ships. There are lost buildings to be seen too. The Bull Ring, Chambers, the Maltkilns that stood around the docks, all evoke memories of the town’s past. Carol grew up in Grimsby in a fishing family. Her father and grandfathers and eight uncles were fishermen. They lived in Havelok Street, part of the network of streets where the Grimsby Tesco's now stands and they played on the Alexandra Dock and around the New Market, beneath whose clock the unemployed men of the town would gather to gossip and pitch pennies. Later they were one of the first families to be rehoused in the Broadway development and she attended the brand new Chelmsford School. Although she always had an interest in art it wasn’t until three years ago that she took up her brushes, inspired by an image in the paper that reminded her of incidents from her childhood. After that she began to seek out images of the town on which to base her paintings. She has exhibited at Abbey Walk Gallery and at the Discovery Centre, where she has a current exhibition as well.
