David Gest - Not Dead And Headed For Grimsby!

aving been the subject of a greatly exaggerated death scare in the Big Brother house recently you might think that producer and friend to the stars David Gest might be content to put his feet up and just enjoy his survival but that’s not the case. Instead he’s headed back out on the road with a new stage show that features many of the biggest stars in the history of soul music and he’ll be bringing it to the Auditorium on Sunday 3rd July. On the bill will be 90s soul diva Dina Carroll, original Stylistic Russell Tompkins Jr, and Deniece Williams (Let’s Hear It For The Boy and Too Much, Too Little, Too Late). If that’s not enough for you there’s Billy Paul (Me & Mrs Jones), Band Of Gold singer Freda Payne, Anita Ward (Ring My Bell), Fern Kinney and a very special guest star the legendary Rose Royce, whose hits include Car Wash, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore and Wishing On A Star. t's no secret that the arts have had a tough few years lately. Theatre audiences have fallen, galleries are half empty, recitals and concerts struggle to break even. But somehow dance, once the Cinderella of the arts world, has bucked the trend, increasing in popularity year after year, and that's not just Strictly viewers! Audiences at Sadler's Wells and the Royal Opera are rising, films like Street Dance have set box office records, leisure centres echo to the sound of freestyle competitions every weekend and up and down the country dance schools are full. The breakout success of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing is widely credited with sparking the current dance boom. The programme first ran in 2004 and was won by Natasha Kaplinsky with Brendan Cole but it was 2005’s third series (won by Darren Gough and Lilia Kopylova and series four (Mark Ramprakash and Karen Hardy) that really set the nation’s feet a-shuffling. By that time the weekly audience was approaching 12 million people and dance schools and clubs were already starting to see the programme’s popularity being reflected in their enrolment figures.

DANCE So what’s the secret of success of dance? Well first and foremost it’s fun, but it’s also good for you and it’s sociable. There aren’t many places where you can enjoy getting fit and meeting new people but your local dance school, (our favourite is of course the Mayfair Dance Academy in Scartho), is just such a place. Dancing can increase aerobic fitness,improve muscle tone and strength, assist with weight management, build stronger bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and many people find that as their dance skills improve so does their self confidence, which can lead to benefits in many other areas of life. As well as physical health benefits dance is also good for your mood providing an opportunity to get away from the daily grind and just concentrate on being one with the music. Let your mind wander as you trip the light fantastic. Depending on the style you choose, a dance class can be a pleasant trip down memory lane, or a stimulating voyage into new musical realms. And let’s not forget the sense of achievement you’ll feel as you master new moves. It’s small wonder really that so many people are making dance an important part of their lives and feeling healthier, happier and more confident as a result!

here’s an exciting day in prospect at Cleethorpes Station on Saturday 11th June when 60103 Flying Scotsman, one of the most iconic locomotives in railway history, steams into town to pull a train full of enthusiasts to Newcastle and Morpeth.

Built in 1923 and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the LNER, the engine left the factory in 1923 and was named after the London to Edinburgh service. In 1934 she was clocked at 100mph, officially the first locomotive in the UK to have reached that speed. Newly restored and repainted in her BR colours Scotsman will leave Cleethorpes Station at 7.30am and pass through Grimsby Town Station at about 7.40am. All seats sold out long ago unfortunately but the engine will still make a fabulous sight for train lovers of all ages. everley Folk Festival is one of the highlights of the music calendar and over the past few years it has brought the likes of Billy Bragg, Hayseed Dixie, Seth Lakeman and Thea Gilmore to the racecourse for some stunning concerts, fine beer and good times. This year promises to keep up the high standard with an eclectic mix of traditional English and Celtic music, combining current favourites and emerging acts with Folk Rock legends from earlier years and a liberal dose of Americana. Headliners at Beverley Racecourse from June 17th to 19th include multi-award winning Kate Rusby and her band, the ever popular Steeleye Span, “musician’s musician” Tim Edey and current must see trio, The Young’uns. Attractions under the legends banner will also include Acoustic Strawbs and The Lindisfarne Story, featuring founder member, Ray Laidlaw, and former lead singer, Billy Mitchell who will be appearing with the Lindisfarne Story Band for a live performance of the iconic album, Fog on the Tyne. They’ll be joined by Geordie legends, Animals & Friends, and Durham born singer songwriter, Jez Lowe for a special “Tyne Treasures” show that should be a highlight of the weekend. Americana is represented by Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters, Wild Ponies, The Goat Roper Rodeo Band, The Durbervilles from Leeds and King Courgette from York! nternational Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s celebrated on March 8th every year and offers an opportunity for celebrating women and their achievements all around the world as well as making a call to action for accelerating gender parity. More than five hundred guests, including MPs Melanie Onn and Martin Vickers attended the event and were treated to some delicious Chinese food followed by a stage show featuring dragons, opera, dance and martial arts, singing and zither playing. Communities Together formed over twenty years ago to address issues of equality for those in minority in the local area.

They hold a range of events aimed at increasing community cohesion through the sharing of traditions including events to mark Diwali, Indian New Year and Holocaust Memorial Day. More than 3000 turned up to their Multicultural Sports Day last year. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be keeping an eye on their calendar to find future events and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll keep you posted and hope to see you there!

“Don’t worry, it’s just a chimney fire” Paul Baker of Brushed Up explains just how wrong you can be ....

omehow or other they’ve acquired a reputation for triviality, hardly worth calling the fire brigade out for, but chimney fires shouldn’t be underestimated, not least because they can often burn undetected for a long time. Nobody who has seen one would describe a chimney fire as a hidden danger. They often announce themselves with a noise like a freight train and sputtering clouds of flame and smoke, but some fires, lacking the fuel or ventilation to burst into flame, will smoulder unnoticed for long periods, and they’re capable of reaching temperatures as high as 2000F and causing massive structural damage to your home, melting mortar, cracking tiles, and causing liners to collapse. In the worst case scenario the fire can cause the chimney to block which will force smoke and flames back down into your home, causing damage to your property and possibly endangering lives.

The only certain way to avoid the conditions which lead to chimney fires is regular sweeping by an experienced professional sweep. Why so? Well the first thing to remember is that sweeping doesn’t just remove soot. Your fireplace and chimney act as an exhaust for the waste products from your fire and as they rise away from the heat and into the cooler parts of the chimney, condensation can occur, taking the form of sticky black creosote. This creosote is flammable and likely to ignite if allowed to gather. A properly trained sweep is also likely to spot potential problems with your fire, appliance or chimney before they become an issue and can advise on a range of related matters such as ventilation, carbon monoxide detection or installation problems. Primula care is fairly straightforward. Plant in spring so plants develop strongly to establish and bloom well this summer. Don’t let them get too dry, deadhead regularly and if they’re in pots lift them off the ground on feet to avoid them drying out. So don’t be shy. f you're one of those people who clean the car only once a year, "whether it needs it or not" then now's the best time to do it. A thorough clean will help to maintain the car's value and reduce the risk of long term corrosion damage. Inside first! Remove all the mats from the car, check for signs of damp and then shampoo the carpets. Clean

interior surfaces and upholstery. Now for the outside. Remove winter grime from paint work with warm water and a suitable car shampoo. Start on the roof and work your way down and around the car. Attend to minor areas of corrosion or stone chips as they will only get worse. And don't forget underneath! The underside of the car takes the worst of the winter weather. Hose down the entire underside of the car, paying particular attention to the front and rear wheel arch areas to remove all dirt and salt build up. Check your tyres carefully for tread and general condition. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm but 2mm is better.

GRIMSBY’S NEW SWIMMING POOL OPENS AT THE BURNETT LEISURE COMPLEX

t’s nice to celebrate a bit of local good news so it was a real pleasure to head down Cromwell Road to the official opening of the new swimming pool.

The £8.4m state of the art facility includes a 25 metre, eight lane swimming pool with learner pool, sauna, steam room and associated wet changing facilities. There's also a sixty station gym with new Matrix equipment, studio space and associated dry changing facilities. The whole area, including the Auditorium and the existing Leisure Centre facilities have been renamed the Burnett Leisure Complex, as a mark of respect to the late councillor Mick Burnett who served in local government from the 1980s until his death just days after being re-elected for a third term as Labour councillor for the Croft Baker ward in Cleethorpes. The ceremony was attended by members of Cllr Burnett’s family and after introductions by the Mayor Cllr Cliff Barber and Council Leader Cllr Ray Oxby. the unveiling was performed by Mick Burnett’s wife, Ann Burnett.

The major events kick off on Sunday 24th April with Modified Live, an action packed day featuring modified performance cars from some of the best UK clubs around. There’s something for everyone, including F1 cars, motorcycle and drifting demos, plus the awesome spectacle of round 1 of the 2016 MSA Time Attack Championship. The weekend of Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th June sees the arrival of cars from motorsport’s pioneering age, at the Wolds Trophy meeting, where Edwardian era machinery can be found alongside sports and racing cars from the interwar years, and the post-war era. There are more cars on July 24th with the Classic Sports Car Festival and then it’s time for the bikes! Bank Holiday Weekend Saturday 27th - Monday 29th August brings with it the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship - one of the highlights of the motorcycling year. Fans will flock to the circuit for a weekend of two wheeled fun with many heading straight to the Mountain to watch their heroes leap into the air on their way to another fast lap. Expect a packed grid of riders from many nations battling wheel to wheel and plenty of excitement and drama. The MCE BSB action will be supported by a top class support bill which includes the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship, Pirelli National Superstock 1000 and 600 Championship and British Motostar.
