David Gest - Not Dead And Headed For Grimsby!

H

aving been the subject of a greatly exaggerated death scare in the Big Brother house recently you might think that producer and friend to the stars David Gest might be content to put his feet up and just enjoy his survival but that’s not the case. Instead he’s headed back out on the road with a new stage show that features many of the biggest stars in the history of soul music and he’ll be bringing it to the Auditorium on Sunday 3rd July. On the bill will be 90s soul diva Dina Carroll, original Stylistic Russell Tompkins Jr, and Deniece Williams (Let’s Hear It For The Boy and Too Much, Too Little, Too Late). If that’s not enough for you there’s Billy Paul (Me & Mrs Jones), Band Of Gold singer Freda Payne, Anita Ward (Ring My Bell), Fern Kinney and a very special guest star the legendary Rose Royce, whose hits include Car Wash, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore and Wishing On A Star. It should be a really special night and you can find out more at the Auditorium website - grimsbyauditorium.org.uk or via their social media.

t's no secret that the arts have had a tough few years lately. Theatre audiences have fallen, galleries are half empty, recitals and concerts struggle to break even. But somehow dance, once the Cinderella of the arts world, has bucked the trend, increasing in popularity year after year, and that's not just Strictly viewers! Audiences at Sadler's Wells and the Royal Opera are rising, films like Street Dance have set box office records, leisure centres echo to the sound of freestyle competitions every weekend and up and down the country dance schools are full. The breakout success of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing is widely credited with sparking the current dance boom. The programme first ran in 2004 and was won by Natasha Kaplinsky with Brendan Cole but it was 2005’s third series (won by Darren Gough and Lilia Kopylova and series four (Mark Ramprakash and Karen Hardy) that really set the nation’s feet a-shuffling. By that time the weekly audience was approaching 12 million people and dance schools and clubs were already starting to see the programme’s popularity being reflected in their enrolment figures.

DANCE So what’s the secret of success of dance? Well first and foremost it’s fun, but it’s also good for you and it’s sociable. There aren’t many places where you can enjoy getting fit and meeting new people but your local dance school, (our favourite is of course the Mayfair Dance Academy in Scartho), is just such a place. Dancing can increase aerobic fitness, improve muscle tone and strength, assist with weight management, build stronger bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and many people find that as their dance skills improve so does their self confidence, which can lead to benefits in many other areas of life. As well as physical health benefits dance is also good for your mood providing an opportunity to get away from the daily grind and just concentrate on being one with the music. Let your mind wander as you trip the light fantastic. Depending on the style you choose, a dance class can be a pleasant trip down memory lane, or a stimulating voyage into new musical realms. And let’s not forget the sense of achievement you’ll feel as you master new moves. It’s small wonder really that so many people are making dance an important part of their lives and feeling healthier, happier and more confident as a result!

UK DANCE BOOM: THE ESSENTIAL NUMBERS 10 % of the UK population participate regularly 4.5 million people take dance classes every year 10 million people watch Strictly The UK has 200 dance organisations 30,000 people are employed in the UK dance industry

INTERVIEW

“My mother was called Wei Wei Nani and my grandmother was Poo I was always very fond of Poo Nani ....” The Peoples talks to

David Gest S

howbusiness legend and friend to the stars, producer and reality star David Gest brings his snappily titled new show, David Gest Is Not Dead He’s Alive With Soul, to the Auditorium on July 3rd. With a star studded cast including Dina Carroll, Russell Thompkins Jnr, (the original vocalist from the Stylistics), Deniece Williams, Billy Paul, Anita Ward and Fern Kinney it should be a fabulous night of classic soul and if that’s not enough for you then there’s special guest star Rose Royce featuring Gwen Dickey as well. For those who have failed to keep their basic reality TV knowledge up to date the show’s title is a reference to an incident during the recent series of Celebrity Big Brother when confusion resulting from Angie Bowie being told that her ex-husband had died left some housemates under the impression that the spirit of David Gest had departed in the night. Fortunately for us and for the entertainment industry, rumours of his death were exaggerated. We got the chance to speak to him at the Auditorium when he came over to talk about the new show and about the fascinating story of his life and he was on great form, wickedly funny, utterly deadpan, frank and entertaining and clearly still in love with the world of showbusiness.

INTERVIEW

11

The Peoples: Thank you very much for finding the time to speak to us. I’ve spent most of the morning watching you on YouTube and I have to say that I haven't laughed so much in a long time as I did watching you explaining to Richard and Judy about your uncle Dick and Aunt Fanny Hertz and their nut farm. So can I ask you first of all, have you always had this mischievous streak that makes you spin yarns with such outrageous plausibility?

him” and we all took a trip to San Francisco in a coach and we went the wrong way and we almost went off a mountain and we had such a great weekend he said “Yes”. When we started rehearsals for that show and they played The Love You Save I couldn't believe that we’d actually done it and got them together. I remember watching the show later at home with Liza Minnelli and we sat on the couch and we both said “This is really good.” Because sometimes when you do something you don't know if it's good or not, but there we David Gest: They’re not yarns. It's all were watching it on CBS and the next true. These are my family stories that day when they said it was the highest I’m sharing. I've had an extraordinary rated show of all time, I was so proud. life. I wasn’t born in the United States. I was stunned. Usually when you do I was born in Taiwan. My father was a something you think that you could one legged fisherman and my mother do it better if you did it again but the was a trainee nun. My real name was Michael Jackson show is a really Hoppity. Why you laughing? good show. I'm sorry. It's a very moving story. It is a moving story. I was adopted when I was five and I've never seen my birth family again. During your theatrical career you’ve produced some remarkable shows including the Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary Concert, Dionne Warwick’s 45th Anniversary Spectacular and the Legends Ball starring Whitney Houston. Is there any one show that you think of as being the highlight of your career, the one you’re most proud of? The Michael Jackson show is probably the highlight. I knew the Jacksons because they were my neighbours when I was growing up and I used to go round to their house and they’d come to mine and at the time I was living in California and one morning I put on the radio and I heard the song The Love You Save which is probably my favourite Jackson 5 song and I said to myself “I'm going to reunite them just to hear that song”. So I called Michael and he said “no” but I said to him, “This is going to be special. It's your thirtieth anniversary and you're going to be reunited with your brothers”. I called his assistant Franklin and said, “You gotta help me convince

I designed all the numbers, like Whitney, Usher and Mya doing Wanna Be Startin’ Something and Liza singing You Are Not Alone and each one was tailored to the performer. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Do you ever watch it now? I haven't watched it in about eight years because I don't like watching myself or my shows on television. I've never even seen myself on Big Brother. Going into the jungle made you into more than just a celebrity. It made you into a much loved popular figure in this country. Do you feel the love from the British public? I feel it all the time and it makes me feel very lucky. Earlier today we were in Hull and when we came out of the theatre and walked along the street all the builders and the passers by said “Hello” and stopped us for photographs. I have seldom known this happen in this way to anyone. I live in this country now, have done for the past nine years, in York, and I love it. My heart is here. There's a big difference between British people and American people. British people never talk about their money or what

12

INTERVIEW

they have or what they do. There's a refinement and reserve to the British and you’re so well educated. Kids know Shakespeare and your school system is so much better. I love the British people I have never felt so at home. The way they react to me is wonderful. They come up to me and say “‘Ello, ‘ow are you?” and I say “‘Ello, ‘ow are you?” back in my bad Dick Van Dyke cockney accent. It's great to put a smile on people's faces and I'm humbled by it but I never expected it. I didn’t want to do I’m A Celebrity. I was forced into it. I’d been injured and had a head injury and I said “No” but my former security man said “You have to do this”. I had only ever seen one clip of the programme, with Carol Thatcher eating a bug, and I thought “I could do that”. And I’m glad I did because it was the greatest experience of my life because I love nature and animals and snakes and I remember that I put a lizard on my hand and said “I'm going to call you Bonnie Tyler” and I started to sing It’s A Heartbreak to it and it turned blue and died. The people on the show were great too. I was the only American and I didn't know most of theme or what they did, but they were all lovely and I made lots of friends and had a great time.

Let’s talk about your new show. I’ve seen you described as a new Ziegfield. Do you see yourself that way, as a master showman? And is that reflected in David Gest Is Not Dead?

Some of the towns you’re playing are quite small. Many of them have never even had a star studded Hollywood comedy named after them. Do you like playing small towns and relatively small venues?

I’d love to be thought of that way. I don’t think I’ve made it yet but this is a big show. It’s starts with my funeral and then everybody shouts “David Gest isn’t dead, he’s alive right here in Grimsby” and then we go into a big gospel number. And I am actually an ordained minister and when you hear me going crazy and shouting “Praise God, Praise Jesus” (at this point he slips effortlessly into character and his stage voice echoes around the room, causing everyone else present to stop talking and look sheepishly round the room as if to say “It wasn’t me, I was whispering”), well everybody listens. I have the little people of David Gest with me and they bring me luck.

I love it. I love it that as I come in there's a huge car lot with miles and miles of cars. It's great to come to a town where the port is still a part of your community.

Do you ever get tired of being a reality star and start to crave privacy? Well I don’t do reality shows as much as I used to. I like the quiet life. I've been a celebrity and I’ve been to the expensive restaurants and nowadays I am just as happy going to a hog roast and having some meat and Yorkshire pudding as going to a restaurant and paying £80 or £100 for a meal.

I noticed that you do a lot of work for charity. Do you enjoy that? I do because sometimes people fall on hard times and it’s not because of their own fault but because their lives are out of control and if you can help people to make their own lives better that's a wonderful feeling. And you make yourself a better person that way. I think you'll like it here at the Auditorium. It's a lovely venue and a great acoustic and the audience will be buzzing. Do you have a message to the people of Grimsby and Cleethorpes about why they should come to the show? I think they should come and see my show because I'm absolutely nuts and because they're going to see eleven soul legends and they're all absolutely fantastic and if they come they’ll have a wonderful night. Thank you very much indeed.

HOLD VERY TIGHT NOW

here’s an exciting day in prospect at Cleethorpes Station on Saturday 11th June when 60103 Flying Scotsman, one of the most iconic locomotives in railway history, steams into town to pull a train full of enthusiasts to Newcastle and Morpeth.

Built in 1923 and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the LNER, the engine left the factory in 1923 and was named after the London to Edinburgh service. In 1934 she was clocked at 100mph, officially the first locomotive in the UK to have reached that speed. Newly restored and repainted in her BR colours Scotsman will leave Cleethorpes Station at 7.30am and pass through Grimsby Town Station at about 7.40am. All seats sold out long ago unfortunately but the engine will still make a fabulous sight for train lovers of all ages. If you’d like to ride on a future Flying Scotsman event you can find details at www.railwaytouring.net and there’s also a fantastic programme of Scotsman related events running throughout the year at the National Railway Museum in York – far too many to mention here so go to www.flyingscotsman.org.uk and remember to check which days the engine will be on show.

everley Folk Festival is one of the highlights of the music calendar and over the past few years it has brought the likes of Billy Bragg, Hayseed Dixie, Seth Lakeman and Thea Gilmore to the racecourse for some stunning concerts, fine beer and good times. This year promises to keep up the high standard with an eclectic mix of traditional English and Celtic music, combining current favourites and emerging acts with Folk Rock legends from earlier years and a liberal dose of Americana. Headliners at Beverley Racecourse from June 17th to 19th include multi-award winning Kate Rusby and her band, the ever popular Steeleye Span, “musician’s musician” Tim Edey and current must see trio, The Young’uns. Attractions under the legends banner will also include Acoustic Strawbs and The Lindisfarne Story, featuring founder member, Ray Laidlaw, and former lead singer, Billy Mitchell who will be appearing with the Lindisfarne Story Band for a live performance of the iconic album, Fog on the Tyne. They’ll be joined by Geordie legends, Animals & Friends, and Durham born singer songwriter, Jez Lowe for a special “Tyne Treasures” show that should be a highlight of the weekend. Americana is represented by Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters, Wild Ponies, The Goat Roper Rodeo Band, The Durbervilles from Leeds and King Courgette from York! TALES FROM NARNIA AT ST MARTINS

FUSION CREATIVE BRING ASLAN ROARING BACK TO LIFE AND NOT A WARDROBE IN SIGHT

I

t’s been a busy six months (or so) up at St Martin’s on Scartho Road but with their new production of Tales From Narnia on Saturday, Fusion Creative showed that they’re now fully settled into their new premises and that they’re prepared to make the most of the extra opportunities it affords for more sophisticated and ambitious drama than was possible in their previous home at St James’ House. Drawing together elements of the whole Narnia multiverse, including Prince Caspian, The Horse And His Boy and The Silver Chair, Tales brought together a cast of young people and adults, assisted by stilt walkers, an orchestra and a choir to bring CS Lewis’ magical world to life. Performances were universally excellent and since it seems invidious to single out any one performer from such a fine ensemble we’ll avoid doing so. Suffice it to say that everyone involved, from principals to chorus and including all the backroom assistants and volunteers without whose help a show like this would be impossible, acquitted themselves superbly and we’ll be looking forward with anticipation to see what their next production will be. Next on the agenda for Fusion is their Look Up Festival which runs from April 7th – 9th. The festival features poetry, crafts and music and culminates with a performance by legendary cabaret artist Barb Jungr. For more details check out the Fusion website or their Facebook page.

IN THE KNOW A practical response to the problem of homelessness The Peoples pays a visit to

The Rucksack Project M

ost of us put a few pennies into a charity collection tin now and again. It gives us a nice warm and virtuous glow, but sometimes it’s good to do something more practical and personal, something that helps us connect with others who are in a position less fortunate than our own and that’s where an initiative like The Rucksack Project is so valuable.

Facing page - images from the Rucksack Project’s Corporation Bridge event Top: Roger Bentley and other organisers of the local branch of the project

The Project began in 2013 in Bristol as a practical response to the hardship of homelessness and its basic idea is so simple you wonder why it hasn’t been done before. All you need to do to support the project is to go to your favourite local charity shop and purchase some or all of the following items: a large rucksack, a sleeping bag, a woolly hat, gloves and scarf, some underwear and socks, a fleece jacket, a thermos flask. A few tins of soup, preferably the ring pull kind, would be good too. Then then contact the Rucksack project via www.rucksackproject.org or through Facebook (rucksackprojectgrimsbycleethorpesandlincolnshire). They’ll advise you where to take your purchases for distribution or how to get more involved if you’d care to do so. Volunteers are always welcome. The local branch of the project held an awareness raising day on Saturday 19th March at Corporation Bridge, which was attended by Melanie Onn MP and we went down to talk to the organisers. They told us that although we often see homeless people around town, the true level of homelessness in the borough is much greater than one might think, especially if one factors in the many people who sleep on their friend’s couches and floors. The forthcoming loss of more than seven hundred homes with the demolition of the Freeman Street flats will also contribute to the local housing shortage and lead to more people living on the streets. Local organiser Roger Bentley explained to us how perilously close to homelessness many people are, even those who have good jobs and supportive families, and that six years of austerity have led to the removal vital safety nets which many of us assume are still in place. Many of those who sleep on the streets are among the most vulnerable in society, including people with mental health or substance use issues. any others are young people driven from home by intolerable circumstances. “Whatever the reasons it’s clear that we can’t turn a blind eye to so much hardship and suffering right on our doorsteps. If people want to help then The Rucksack Project is a way of making a small contribution that can have have a major effect.” If you’d like to donate items or get involved with the project in other ways you can contact them via Facebook.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

I

nternational Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s celebrated on March 8th every year and offers an opportunity for celebrating women and their achievements all around the world as well as making a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year’s theme is Pledging For Parity, which means that everyone - women and men - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias.

It also means that each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to taking action to accelerate gender parity. Here at The Peoples we’re aware that many of the local businesses who advertise with us are led by women and we think it’s a perfect occasion for celebrating their achievements. So here are just a few of the amazing women who make such an important contribution to our local economy – each with a piece of good advice for young women seeking to emulate their successes. You can find out more about International Women’s Day at www.internationalwomensday.com

Marcie was inspired to set up her business by a visit to the furniture show at the NEC in Birmingham, nearly sixteen years ago. At first she had to balance child care and running a household with running her own company but it’s a lot easier now the kids are grown up. She is a firm believer in excellent customer care so, for example, her beds are delivered properly, right into the house, not left in some awkward place. She has even been known to go round and put the sheets on the bed and to deliver a duvet to a house bound customer.

WELCOME TO THE KUMON WAY

HELPING CHILDREN TO EXCEL AT LEARNING

WITH GUIDANCE & ENCOURAGEMENT

E

very parent wants their child to do well at school but sometimes it can feel like we just pack them off each day and hope for the best. It’s difficult to know what practical help you can give them to ensure that they reach their full potential but one practical step that can work wonders is to enrol them in the Kumon programme. Kumon originated in Japan and is now a wordwide educational phenomenon. The Grimsby Centre is at Healing Village Hall and is run by Sarah Prior (pictured left receiving an award to mark her first thirteen years as a Kumon instructor). The aim of the programme is to help students become advanced learners with positive attitudes to study by boosting their self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges and problems by themselves. Check out the Kumon website at www.kumon.co.uk for more information. Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Sarah provides the guidance and encouragement that students need to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Of course Kumon are aware that every child is different and their programme is not a one size fits all system, nor is it a quick fix. Their individualised programmes allow students to progress at their own pace and in addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind set and skills for learning. Sessions take place between 3.30pm and 5.30pm with students dropping in for about twenty minutes, once or twice a week. A Night With The Orchestra MAPAS/NEL Music Hub Ensembles at the Whitgift Film Theatre reviewed by Sue Baker Sunday 20th March

W

hitgift Film Theatre was the venue for the MAPAS Easter Celebration Concert on Sunday 20th March, entitled A Night With The Orchestra and it certainly was a night to remember with over a hundred fine young musicians performing together in the finale of Mars from the Planet Suite by Gustav Holst. This wonderful evening of music making was attended by the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Cllr Cliff Barber and he commented on how pleased he and his wife were to be able to attend. The aim was to give the North East Lincolnshire Youth Orchestra (known as NELYO) and two of its feeder ensembles the opportunity to showcase some of the excellent music they have been learning over the last few weeks. The first half began with confident and enthusiastic performances of Penny Lane and Bohemian Rhapsody by the Grimsby Youth Band under the leadership of Adrian Clarke. This this group of more than thirty five young brass players have progressed from Brass Roots to Grimsby Youth Band and some of the members also play in the Youth orchestra. They’ve certainly been working hard in rehearsals and this shone through in their performances, especially of the Queen piece which Adrian introduced as being the most difficult piece they had ever worked on. Following this performance North East Lincolnshire Training Orchestra took to the stage and under the direction of Ian Booth and they chose to play A Spanish Sketch, which was written for the individual players by Ian Booth and then into a rousing performance of Star Wars. The NELYO Wind section then performed three contrasting pieces which not only demonstrated strength within each section but also some excellent soloists. Isabella Goodwin played beautifully the solo soprano saxophone beautifully in an arrangement of Rodrigo’s En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor. Other soloists were Dylan Heywood and Sam Garbutt on drums , Emma Northern on Eb Horn and Jacob Wilding narrating for War of the Worlds all did an excellent job.

The NELYO String section gave a passionate and exciting performance of Serenade For Strings by Tchaikovsky. This piece tested all players as it demanded a great deal from them both musically and technically but these wonderful young string players rose to the challenge with great vigour. The strings were confidently led by Ellie Robey. The second half of the concert showcased the constantly growing NELYO which now has over sixty members. They performed arrangements of seven of the BBC 10 Pieces which included classics such as the first movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, and Night On Bare Mountain by Mussorgsky. All of the sections of the orchestra were featured and this certainly provided a varied and hugely enjoyable programme. The musical director of NELYO is Adrian Clarke and he is supported by some inspirational teachers who constantly encourage and drive these young musicians forward. This concert was supported by Soundboard which is the fundraising body for the MAPAS ensembles. Following the success of Sunday evening’s concert they are providing an Oscars presentation evening for all of the members of the ensembles. Judging from Sundays performance they will need many awards! Congratulations to all involved.

INTERVIEW

43

an interview with

Joe McElderry Hi Joe, thanks for joining me today. Tell me how you got involved with the show and what was it about the part that attracted you to it? It was last summer and Bill Kenwright came to me and asked me if I was interested and would I like to have a meeting about possibly playing Joseph. And it all went from there really and here we are! It’s such an iconic role, everybody knows it and the nice thing about it is, and this is just from talking to people, it’s seems to be a lot of people’s first experience of musical theatre. A lot of people have told me it was the first musical they saw as a kid. And it passes down the generations. And out of all of the things I’ve done in the last few years, there’s a real buzz around this. I’ve never had so many people come up to me and tell me how excited they are that I’m going to be Joseph, so that’s really nice. So you were familiar with the show when the offer came up, have you seen any previous productions? I saw it a couple of years back with H from Steps and he was great. I wasn’t that familiar with the show when I saw it and when this came up, I had forgotten it but as soon as I heard the songs again, I remembered and I am more than familiar with it now! The good thing about it is that it’s all songs and I’m used to learning songs very quickly so I’m not too panicked. Even the colours - I’ve done it! And I did it on national television this morning, live on air! And I got it right!

44

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

45

Philip Schofield, Jason Donovan, Donny Osmond have all starred as Joseph, you’ve got some big shoes to fill! I am feeling the pressure a little bit because it’s such a famous role, that’s the thing about it. And people have a big attachment to the show, people who have seen it many times before, they have certain expectations. So I am a little anxious, but I always get like this before I do a show, whether this or this X Factor or even my own tour, but then once I get into rehearsals I’m fine. It’s before that that I get a little apprehensive because I don’t know what to expect. But once I get told where to stand and what to do and when to sing, I’m absolutely fine. Have you already got a favourite song? I love Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do of course. I also love Pharaoh’s Dream Explained, I enjoy singing that, it’s quite bouncy. Winning the X Factor in 2009, it’s what most people will know you from – is it a badge you still wear proudly? The thing with the show is, and I know it’s had a bit of a decline recently and people have been slating it in recent years, but without the profile it gave me, a lot of the things that I have done, including Joseph, probably wouldn’t have happened if it hadn’t been for the X Factor. The X Factor led to one thing, which led to another, which led to another, so I’m glad I was able to be a part of such a big show. Because I think it is an iconic show and it’ll probably go down in British TV history as one of the biggest watched shows in the country. So I’m proud to say that I did and I was a part of it and I won it! You’re also the third X Factor contestant to star in Joseph after Lloyd Daniels and Amelia Lily were on the tour last year – do you think TV talent shows are a great platform for singers to branch out into other musical fields? The thing is for me, I’ve done this for six years now, I’ve made four albums, had my own tours, and the nice thing I feel I’ve been able to do with my career, especially in the last two or three years, is to have a bit of diversity, which challenges me as well, something different to what people expect me to do. And that way, I don’t get bored, and I don’t think the audiences that come and see my shows do either, because I always try and do different things. And sometimes I do things that people wouldn’t think I would do, which is a nice thing. Do you think being cast as Joseph has taken people by surprise then? I thought people would have been quite shocked but everyone has been telling me how perfect I am for the role, and that they’ve been telling me for years to do this (laughs). But that might just be because I’m called Joseph (laughs). Are you still in touch with anyone from the X Factor? Oh yeah. I mean, we’re not on the phone to each other every day but we see each other every now and then. And in this industry you bump into people all the time at events and parties. And I do hear from Cheryl (Fernandez-Versini – who mentored Joe on the X Factor), we have kept in touch, and while we don’t speak on the phone all the time, it’s nice that we’ve managed to keep the relationship. We’re from the same neck of the woods after all, opposite sides of the river, but same part of the world.

INTERVIEW So you won that, then Popstar to Operastar, and then The Jump – we all know about your X Factor journey but how did you get involved with the last two? The Jump was a last minute thing really, I actually stepped in for someone and I was on holiday at the time in a nearby place, so that all happened by surprise. And I am a skier, I’ve skied for years, but half the things they make you do on there, well, it’s not all about skiing. Half the things we did I’ve never done before, like speed skating and tobogganing. And then Popstar to Operastar was really nice because I got to learn a different genre of music. I actually though I’d be so bad at it that people would think it a bit of a joke, so I saw it as a fun project. And then it just went to another level! Everyone was asking me to sing Nessun Dorma at my concerts! And then I signed a classical deal with Decca and it spiralled from there, it was completely unexpected. You’re on the road with Joseph until July, but you’re used to that having toured both with X Factor Live and your own concerts – how do you find being on the road? I find that the first two weeks on the road are a bit out of sync because your body is all over the place just trying to get into some sort of routine. Certainly when I do my shows, and the same may apply with Joseph, it takes a good couple of weeks for your voice to settle into the material. But then after a while it just becomes second nature and then your body just goes with it and you find your routine. The nice thing about Joseph is, I’m normally in a different place every night, which is exhausting. But with this show, we’re in places for a week so that allows you to settle for a bit, you’re not getting up at 8am the morning after a late show to do a six hour drive on the bus to the next venue. And also, there are breathers in this. When I do my shows, I’m normally on stage for a couple of hours with no break, but with this, although I have some big numbers, I’ll have moments when I’m off stage to take a breath, get myself together before the next scene, give myself a slap (laughs) and then I’m back on! Is there anywhere on this tour you’ve not visited and are looking forward to seeing? I’ve never been to Southampton before and I’ve heard that’s a brilliant venue. I’m looking forward to Manchester because although I’ve been to the city before, I’ve never performed in the Palace theatre, so that’ll be exciting. And of course, Sunderland, I’m looking forward to going home and seeing the family. They are excited and a lot of my friends really are too. It’s funny because having been in this industry for six years now, they’re all used to what I do and me doing different projects. Sometimes they don’t even mention anything and they’ll wave me off with a “see you when you’re back.” But with this, everyone has mentioned it and how excited they are, there’s a proper buzz around it which is really nice.

I

t has been a busy few months for Fusion Creative as they’ve moved into their new home at St Martin’s Church on Scartho Road but all the hard work of is paying dividends as the church has played host to a string of successful events that have included poetry and music sessions, a sold out production of Tales From Narnia and, during the past week, their inaugural major event, the Look Up Festival, which came to a stunning climax last night with a performance by internationally renowned singer Barb Jungr. Inspired by the Japanese Sakura Matsuri which welcomes the arrive of the cherry blossom each spring, the Look Up Festival has seen a blend of poetry, music and craft that has celebrated the interdependence of the social and natural worlds. Highlights have included a workshop with poet Maria Garner, a young people’s poetry and music recital and an invitation to submit haiku which brought more than 140 entries (nearly 2,500 syllables), each of which was displayed in the church on a piece of blossom on the cherry trees in residence. Friday night saw a performance by Coritani Taiko of a new work by Josie-Anne Gray, Thirteen Moons, an account in poetry and percussion of a year in the life of the moongazing hare, a figure from both Japanese and European folklore, followed by a set of fine americana and folk from The Life And Times Of The Brothers

Hogg and the festival was rounded off on Sunday night with Barb Jungr’s visit. Her show, featuring a selection of songs from the collected works of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, was played to an almost full house and saw Jungr tease new shapes and resonances from classics such as Blowin’ In The Wind and It’s Alright Ma as well as introducing the audience to lesser known works from both songwriters such as Cohen’s Land Of Plenty and Dylan’s Things Have Changed. Upcoming events at Fusion include an Evening with Henry Priestman on Saturday 11th June and a Circus Spectacular weekend from Friday to Sunday July 1st - 3rd. Young’s announces its sponsorship of The Mariners for 2016/17 season

W

ith this season building to a terrific climax, play off places at stake and a trip to Wembley already booked for the FA Trophy Final on May 22nd, you might think everybody at Blundell Park would be too busy living in the present to be planning for next season but of course that’s not the way these things work. Behind the scenes the club is a hive of activity making sure that everything is in place to give the team the best possible chance in the next campaign so there was an air of anticipation about the ground this week when the announcement was made that Young’s will be continuing as the Mariners’ major sponsor for the 2016-17 season. Young’s have been the club’s official sponsor for thirteen years and this year will see the renaming of the upper and lower stands to the Young’s Upper and Young’s Lower stands. We went down to see the announcement and afterwards we got to chat with Pete Ward, Chief Executive of Young’s Seafood Limited, about the sponsorship and why he feels it is vital for Young’s to be actively engaged in the community, through its support of Grimsby Town and also via sponsorship of local community groups and events such as the Carnival. “I’m very happy to announce Young’s Seafood Limited’s continued support for Grimsby Town Football Club,” he told us. “We’ve supported our local team for over a decade now and the partnership is incredibly important to us. As part of our Fish for Life Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, Young’s Seafood is committed to playing a positive role in the communities in which we are based and our relationship with the club is a key part of this commitment. As our award winning Corporate Social Responsibility Programme reaches it’s tenth anniversary this year, we’re thrilled to celebrate by opening the newly named Young’s Upper and Young’s Lower Stand at Blundell Park. We look forward to proudly watching our team continue on the path to success next season.” John Fenty, Director, Grimsby Town FC, said “Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted that Young’s Seafood Limited will continue to support the Mariners for season 2016-17. We are honoured to have such a well known brand give their support to the club and the wider community.” The announcement follows the successful partnership between Young’s Seafood and Grimsby Town over the Christmas holidays when the club players stepped in to support the Young’s Seafood Cleethorpes Winter Wonderland stall. At December’s first ever Cleethorpes Winter Wonderland, the two helped to attract over 30,000 people to the volunteer led event. Young’s Seafood ran a hugely successful stall with the help of local volunteers and GTFC’s top players who met with local fans and raffled off signed shirts and other prizes.

Carousel Bustin’ Out All Over

The Auditorium In June

Silhouettes Musical Theatre to present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel at The Auditorium in June

W

ith unforgettable characters like Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, great songs and one of the most moving and surprising plots in the whole of musical theatre, Carousel remains one of the best loved shows in the Broadway musical canon. Opening on the midway of a travelling fairground as it visits a small Maine fishing port, the show has songs like You’ll Never Walk Alone, Clambake and June Is Bustin’ Out All Over with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein. It was their second collaboration, successor to the enormously successful Oklahoma, and many in the industry thought that after such a debut their second work was bound to struggle in comparison. How wrong they were. It was first performed in 1945 which makes it four years younger than the Silhouettes Musical Theatre, who celebrate their 75th anniversary this year and who will be bringing Carousel to life at the Auditorium between Wednesday 1st and Saturday 4th of June. Formed in 1941 under the Chairmanship of Arthur R. Fenner, a Director of Watmough’s (which later became the United Biscuits Factory at Great Coates) the Silhouettes Operatic Society’s main aim was to bring a little light relief to the people of Grimsby and Cleethorpes during the Second World War. Because of the shortages imposed by the war, the society was unable to put on lavish stage shows and so for seven years they created and produced the Silhouettes Review which was performed at the Theatre Royal, Cleethorpes.

70

THEATRE

THEATRE

The society’s first stage musical, The Student Prince was produced in 1948 by Florence Lucas. The company performed at the Theatre Royal until 1964, when they had to move to the ABC (Ritz) Cinema in Grimsby Road. In 1973 the Silhouettes moved again, back to the sea front and on to the Pier Pavilion where they opened with Fiddler On The Roof and there they stayed until the pier closed in 1983. From there the Silhouettes moved to the Ice House in Grimsby until the opening of Grimsby Auditorium in 1996 where they performed until 2010. Since 2010 they have performed at the Grimsby Institute and Grimsby Central Hall, but are delighted to be returning to the Grimsby Auditorium this year. We were lucky enough to get an invitation to meet the cast at their press call at the Fishing heritage centre and judging by the enthusiasm of all concerned it should be a great show. Jordan Carlton stars as Billy, in his last Silhouettes role before he heads to the Royal College of Music in London to continue his vocal training and Kate Prior, a maths teacher at the Tollbar Academy, who is in her twelfth year with the company is Julie, and they’re both feeling excited and perhaps just a little daunted by their roles. “It’s a fabulous show”, says Kate. “It’s more than just a musical. It’s got drama, comedy, loss. It really does have everything.” Jordan is concentrating on his own role. “Billy is a complex character” he tells us, “which means there’s a lot of acting involved. And the music is difficult too. The whole thing is a real challenge but it’s a great show.” It sounds like something to really look forward to and tickets are available from the Auditorium website at www.grimsbyauditorium.org.uk The Silhouettes can be found at www.silhouettes. moonfruit.com

A Dazzling Coat Of Many Colours Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Grimsby Auditorium April 12th 2016

I

t was a splendid night at the Auditorium on Tuesday as a new revival of Joseph, directed and produced by Bill Kenwright, came to town, bursting with energy and full of great tunes, holding the audience spellbound and building to a terrific climax with almost the whole Auditorium up and dancing.

Left - Joe McElderry as Joseph

The first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly Joseph isn’t a perfect piece of work but it has enough original melodies among the pastiche, and enough dry wit to show that the fledgling team had the potential to be something special. In a show whose main schtick is wilful anachronism Rice cracks some great jokes, not just with an Elvis Pharaoh and calypso Canaanites but also with sharp wordplay like Joseph’s explanation of the fat cows thin cows dream “All these things you saw in your pyjamas, Were a long range forecast for your farmers.” Got to love that. Joe McElderry approached the role of Joseph with huge enthusiasm and if anyone had any doubts about the vocal qualities of TV talent show contestants they were settled right from the start, both by his opening rendition of Any Dream Will Do and by the arrival of Lucy Kay as the narrator. (Note for those who don’t watch McElderry won the X-Factor in 2009, seeing off Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon in the final while Kay is a classically trained singer who was runner up in last year’s Britain’s Got Talent.) Special mention too to Emilianos Stamatakis who made the most of his scene stealing role as The Pharaoh and to Henry Metcalfe who doubled up as Jacob and Potiphar.

Staging, costumes and choreography were all excellent and a special mention should go to the sixty or so young performers from Stagecoach Theatre School who had worked hard for three months under the direction of Diana Whitworth to be ready for a show whose set they didn’t see until the afternoon of the showday! How did it feel to be on the stage with Joe McElderry? Fantastic seemed to be the universal response. “It’s been great” said Maisie Bebbington, 14, “and it’s made me much more confident. It’s something I shall remember forever.” It’s not the longest musical in the world but that was more than made up for by the willingness of the cast to perform a high energy reprise which seemed to include most of the songs from the show and had the entire audience up and dancing. Great fun all round and if you’ve got a free night this week we’d highly recommend you pay this excellent show a visit. Joseph is at Grimsby Auditorium until Saturday 16th with matinees Wednesday and Thursday, two shows on Friday and three on Saturday. Go to www.grimsbyauditorium.org.uk for more details and to book tickets.

ensway Classic Blinds are in their fourteenth year of supplying and blinds for homes and businesses and in that time they’ve served more than more than twenty thousand customers! At a time when running a successful small is getting more and more difficult it’s a remarkable achievement but proprietor Ken McQuoid puts their success down to one simple motto - “Look after your customers the best you possibly can.” “That’s the golden rule because at a time when people often turn to the Internet and the big corporates first, it’s excellent service with a smile that will bring them back to local firms they can trust.” “Not everybody has the time or the capability to fit their own blinds,” he explains, “and many customers like to deal with someone approachable that they can speak to directly. They know that when they ring Kensway they will always find a friendly person to talk to, who will arrange for one off our team to go and see them at a time to suit them. That way they can see what their options are, with no pressure, in the comfort of their own homes.”

“There are so many types and styles of blinds on the market today and for their own peace of mind our customers need to be sure that the choice they are making is the right ones. They need honest help and advice to ensure that the blinds they choose are suitable for their purpose and they need to know that they have the security of an excellent back team to install them and deal with any teething problems.” Ken is upbeat about prospects for the business in 2016. “We’ll be expanding our range of roller and vertical blind materials with lots of exciting new colours and patterns and our range of fashionable wooden venetians, which are now more popular than ever, will be growing too with colours to suit everybody. Customers old and new will appreciate the changes and we’ll have some fantastic deals which will offer the best possible value for money.” He sounds like he means it too, so if you’re thinking about switching to a new blind system or upgrading the one you have already, better make Kensway Classic Blinds of Pasture Street your first port of call and see what they can do for you!

“Don’t worry, it’s just a chimney fire” Paul Baker of Brushed Up explains just how wrong you can be ....

S

omehow or other they’ve acquired a reputation for triviality, hardly worth calling the fire brigade out for, but chimney fires shouldn’t be underestimated, not least because they can often burn undetected for a long time. Nobody who has seen one would describe a chimney fire as a hidden danger. They often announce themselves with a noise like a freight train and sputtering clouds of flame and smoke, but some fires, lacking the fuel or ventilation to burst into flame, will smoulder unnoticed for long periods, and they’re capable of reaching temperatures as high as 2000F and causing massive structural damage to your home, melting mortar, cracking tiles, and causing liners to collapse. In the worst case scenario the fire can cause the chimney to block which will force smoke and flames back down into your home, causing damage to your property and possibly endangering lives.

The only certain way to avoid the conditions which lead to chimney fires is regular sweeping by an experienced professional sweep. Why so? Well the first thing to remember is that sweeping doesn’t just remove soot. Your fireplace and chimney act as an exhaust for the waste products from your fire and as they rise away from the heat and into the cooler parts of the chimney, condensation can occur, taking the form of sticky black creosote. This creosote is flammable and likely to ignite if allowed to gather. A properly trained sweep is also likely to spot potential problems with your fire, appliance or chimney before they become an issue and can advise on a range of related matters such as ventilation, carbon monoxide detection or installation problems. For coal fires sweeping twice a year is recommended (once a year for gas fires) but you can find out more at www.guildofmasterchimneysweeps.co.uk. You’ll find that a proper sweep probably costs a lot less than you think and it could save a small fortune or even your life!

Get some colour into your kitchen

with Schuller! T

hey say that first impressions matter, and of course they’re right, but the saying that doesn’t just apply to people. It applies to rooms too! Have you ever noticed how, the first time you enter a room, the furniture and the decor affect your feelings about the occupants? Even if you try not to it’s inevitable. You judge the owners by it and that’s especially true of kitchens and especially related to your choice of colours. At Schuller they believe that kitchens are much more than just rooms for cooking in. They are also spaces for living, for playing, for working, for being a family, for entertaining. And Schuller believe that what your kitchen says about you matters. And when it comes to kitchens, Schuller are the colour experts. They know that just a little colour here and there can transform a kitchen from a purely functional space into a feel good area for the whole family and that’s why they invented the colour concept system. It’s made up of 24 different satin lacquer colours, available for fronts, open shelf units, support panels and plinths – to mix and match as you please. You don’t always need to cover large areas, even small coloured highlights can produce a strong effect in an otherwise neutral kitchen. A coloured open shelf unit, a couple of coloured wall unit doors, details like this can liven the room up hugely. And don’t forget that wood tones are also colours, ranging from grey through yellow, and reddish-brown to black. They can be perfectly and exquisitely combined with high gloss lacquer surfaces to create the space that’s exactly right for you and your family. So don’t be shy - head down to your local Schuller showroom at Kitchen Discount and see what they’ve got to turn your kitchen into the kitchen of your dreams!

Paul Stocks is used to people being surprised when they first enter the Kitchen Discount showroom in Wood Street (off Freeman Street, next turn down after Wellington). There’s a tardis effect in operation because the building (it’s the purple one) doesn’t look big from the outside but when you step through the door it just seems to keep on going - fifteen full kitchens on display over two floors and these are not just any kitchens. Kitchen Discount specialise in kitchens by Schuller, famous for their superb German design, style and engineering. They also offer the British made K Range, and provide a full design and project management service, taking care of everything from plumbing and electrics to plastering and tiling. The business was founded by Paul’s dad Norman in 1973 and Paul takes evident pride in the fact that while others have come and gone Kitchen Discount are still in the same place as when they were founded. So how do they compete against the multiples who dominate the market? “Most of our business is repeat business and personal recommendations” Paul explains. “People know us and trust us. In the time we’ve been here we’ve seen Freeman Street change beyond recognition and fashions in kitchens have changed too.” “When I started working with my dad the farmhouse style was all the rage but nowadays it’s all about clean lines, bright colours and minimalism. But some things don’t change. People still want quality, attention to detail and personal service. That’s what we provide and so far it seems to be working, so we aim to keep it up for at least another forty years.”

GARDENS

THE VIEW FROM THE

GREENHOUSE

IS YOUR GARDEN

READY FOR

SPRING?

I

t's that time of year when the mornings are just a little lighter, the birds are singing, buds are budding everywhere and the green fingers of the keen gardener are itching to get out in the fresh air and put fork to earth. But before we can start on gardening properly there are the essential maintenance tasks yet to be done. So just in case you've forgotten anything here's our list of the top essential jobs for the springtime gardener.

Clean your greenhouse Soon your greenhouse will be home to trays of seedlings and cuttings but right now it's full of sleeping pests and diseases. Sweep it out and disinfect with Jeyes Fluid. Ventilate thoroughly.

Fix fences, gates and trellises Time to get those niggly little jobs out of the way! Any broken structures or tools are best fixed now so you have more time to spend in the garden during spring and summer.

Hunt down garden pests Time to be ruthless. This is when the blighters are at their most vulnerable. Search the crowns of your perennials for hibernating slugs, snails and aphids.

Clean your tools Caring properly for your garden tools not only helps preserve them so they work better, it saves you money in the long run and helps prevent the spread of disease.

Move deciduous shrubs If you have a badly placed deciduous shrub then now is the time to move Clear up flower beds and borders it whilst it’s dormant. Choose a still day and try to take as much of the Remove leaves and debris. Cut back dead growth of grasses and herbaceous root ball as possible for the quickest perennials. Dig some well rotted manure establishment in its new location. or compost into borders or else mulch.

Primulas

F

or versatility and colour in spring and early summer nothing to beat a gorgeous display primulas. They offer great value, flowering for weeks and filling your borders, even the shaded and damp corners, with masses of brightly coloured blooms. Primulas come in a wide variety of shapes and colours. Single coloured flowers are popular but look out for bicolours, double and rosebud types. Bold blocks of primulas always look striking but they can also be combined with other spring bedding, flowering bulbs and foliage plants too. Small pot grown plants are perfect for creating instant displays in any garden, patio or courtyard and for damp or shady sites and boggy or poolside gardens try the Asiatic primulas like Primula japonica. Primula care is fairly straightforward. Plant in spring so plants develop strongly to establish and bloom well this summer. Don’t let them get too dry, deadhead regularly and if they’re in pots lift them off the ground on feet to avoid them drying out. So don’t be shy. They’re in the shops now including of course our good friends at Pennells - and if you want some spectacular colour in your garden this year then you need look no further than perfect primulas!

The first exhibition Deities At The Bottom Of The Garden features the work of artist Richard Bartle and is brought to the town by ‘our big picture ltd’ in partnership with Grimsby Minster and 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe. sculptures, installations, videos and paintings about society, current affairs, religion and politics. Originally created to respond to the former church building housing 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, the piece consists of twelve scale model garden sheds, each with an interior modelled on the worship place of a different world religion. Each sculpture has been extensively researched and is lovingly hand crafted, wherever possible using the same materials that would be used in their life size counterparts. Details include hand woven rugs, painted ceilings, hand turned furniture and glass light fittings. The work reduces the usually grand architecture of churches to a more private space, inviting the viewer to make their own minds up about what it is to have faith and the differences and similarities between differing beliefs and cultures. Deities at the Bottom of the Garden runs until 21st May, Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am to 2.30pm in the Lady Chapel in Grimsby Minster. Admission free.

December 2016 to January 2017 THE CHANDELIER OF LOST EARRINGS by the artists Sagar and Campbell The chandelier stands 2.5m tall a sculpture made from over 3,000 single earrings donated by owners who have lost the other half of the pair. The women who contributed items to the project also shared, via letters, the story attached to it, revealing why the earrings were so meaningful to them and these stories have become part of the artwork’s legacy.

March to April 2017 ORDINALIA by the artist Tracey Holland Tracey works with photography, film and collage to create site specific installations that explore the links between science, mythology, religion and history. Ordinalia is a film triptych shown in three large maritime lanterns surrounded by seven smaller film loops on a variety of boat and train lamps.

f you're one of those people who clean the car only once a year, "whether it needs it or not" then now's the best time to do it. A thorough clean will help to maintain the car's value and reduce the risk of long term corrosion damage. Inside first! Remove all the mats from the car, check for signs of damp and then shampoo the carpets. Clean

interior surfaces and upholstery. Now for the outside. Remove winter grime from paint work with warm water and a suitable car shampoo. Start on the roof and work your way down and around the car. Attend to minor areas of corrosion or stone chips as they will only get worse. And don't forget underneath! The underside of the car takes the worst of the winter weather. Hose down the entire underside of the car, paying particular attention to the front and rear wheel arch areas to remove all dirt and salt build up. Check your tyres carefully for tread and general condition. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm but 2mm is better.

Vintage Lincs Expands To Offer Retail Spaces For Local Traders

t's a busy time down at our favourite classic style emporium, Vintage Lincs, as they expand their premises to create an exciting new retail environment.

Sarah Brown is already well known for her recycled second hand furniture and upholstery, and as the Lincolnshire agent for Frenchic furniture paint, but with her expansion into what was formerly the offices of Graham Chapman Classic Cars on Wilton Road, Humberston she's got plenty of room to expand her stock and to offer retail spaces for local traders and craftspeople. It certainly looks like being an exciting venture and we’ll keep you posted on progress and if you think you might be interested in selling through Vintage Lincs then give Sarah a call for more information.
