URBAN ARTS 2016 ‘THE 4 ELEMENTS’ IN ST JAMES SQUARE
S
t James Square was filled with music, dance and colour on Saturday 10th September when Our Big Picture Ltd and Lyns Urban Arts brought the second Urban Arts Festival - themed around the four elements of hip hop - to town. Eighteen graffiti artists took part including the amazing Odeith, all the way from Lisbon, whose piece of three dimensional corner art was a firm favourite with the crowd. There were also rap challenges, scratch battles and a breathtaking display of break dancing by the Blood Masterz crew from Leeds, who were joined by local young people who had trained in workshops in the weeks leading up to the event. Some of the artwork is still in situ so if you missed out on the day you can go and take a look or check out the festival’s Facebook page for more images from the day.

CYCLING
PicaRock the electric bike shop
E
lectric bikes can change your life! It might seem at first like an extravagant claim but once we’d spoken to PicaRock founder Richard Soulby we were convinced. Having been a fireman all his working life, Richard was used to keeping fit and it came as a shock to him when he was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease. Of course the illness brought an abrupt end to his career and for a couple of years he was happy to travel round Spain in a motor caravan, enjoying the sights and the weather. But it didn't take long for him to realise that he still needed to maintain his health and fitness levels and cycling, which had been one of his passions in the past, seemed like a good option. The countryside in Spain being frequently mountainous he found at first that he often had problems with the terrain - until he discovered the benefits of electric bikes! Within months he had set up his first shop, which operated successfully for many years and when he decided to move back to the UK to get married it was inevitable that before long before he would be in business again, sharing his passion for electric cycling with the world. "So what's so great about electric bikes?", we asked. "What you have to bear in mind," he explains, "is that these are not mopeds or scooters that you just sit and go. These are proper bikes. There's some welcome assistance available from the electric system if it's needed, but they still have to be pedalled and it's still first class exercise. Electric assisted cycling is great for weight loss, flexibility and enhanced mobility and what's more important it gets you out and about! My first electric bike gave me back my freedom. Now I want to help other people to have the same experience that I did. When people come in the shop for the first time they’re often slightly wary and a bit sceptical. Perhaps
they haven’t ridden a bike for years. Often they don’t see how such a small motor can make a significant difference to their riding. So we invite them to take a test ride and when they get back they’re hooked. Whatever kind of biking experience people are looking for we can partner them with a machine that’s perfect for their needs. We’re main agents for FreeGo, Batribike and Cyclotricity and we also customise to order. So if you don’t see exactly what you want we can probably build it for you. We’re always happy to give advice to anyone who isn’t sure that electric cycling is for them but you have to bear in mind that we’re not just retailers - we’re also enthusiasts, so you’ll have to forgive us if we get a bit carried away sometimes. And remember - an electric bike isn’t just for Christmas - it’s for life!”

STAY HEALTHY AND ACTIVE WITH MAN’S (&WOMAN’S) BEST FRIEND
A
s we get older it’s vitally important that we stay active and healthy and one of the best ways to keep ourselves in good trim is by keeping a dog. Dogs offer companionship and affection and for owners who live alone they can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase social interaction. So what kind of dogs will suit an elderly owner? There are lots of factors to take into account. How far and how fast can the owner walk? How much time will they wish to spend on grooming? How much space do they have in the house and garden? Size is clearly a factor to consider but energy level is just as important. Anyone who thinks small dogs aren’t tiring has obviously never owned a Jack Russell! Breeds with a reputation for being good, calm companions include Yorkshire Terriers, Boston Terriers and Corgis but if you’re looking for something more exotic try the Lowchen, the Japanese Spitz and the American Eskimo Dog. And if you don’t feel ready to keep a dog of your own why not sign up with Barking Mad (see opposite) who are always looking for people to provide perfect holiday homes for pets. That sounds just the job.

eeping active in old age is vital for health and happiness and at the Grove Care Home in Waltham they offer a wide and varied range of activities for residents to enjoy, from gardening to knitting and cooking. Many of these activities are made possible thanks to the help of local volunteers. Volunteers are very much part of the team at The Grove, supporting staff to enable people to continue to participate in their hobbies and interests. One of the longest standing volunteers is Brenda Danby who has been coming to The Grove for over 18 years. Brenda first visited when her mother-in-law became a resident, she started out by helping at the Summer Fair and other events. Following the death of her husband she continued to visit her mother-in-law. With more time on her hands Brenda was keen to increase her volunteering so agreed to get involved with the gardening club. She now helps at the fortnightly group, as well as supporting the Activity Co-ordinator with armchair exercises, dominoes, crafts, quizzes, games, church services, fair and trips – the only thing she doesn’t like doing is Bingo! Brenda explains - “Being part of a team, supporting the staff that looked after my mother-in-law and giving me a
sense of purpose are the main things that I get out of it. You’ve got to do it to realise how good and rewarding it can be”. Brenda thought that when her mother-in-law died she would stop coming to The Grove, but in fact has become more involved in life at the home. She used to be a nurse so is used to talking to people and enjoys feeling part of a team. “It’s rewarding, often residents with dementia don’t remember me or my name but it’s the enjoyment that they clearly get from the activity we’re doing - that’s the rewarding part.” The Gardening Club is run by Gavin Johnson from Enliven Therapeutic Horticulture, he works with a number of local care homes specialising in encouraging residents with dementia to enjoy gardening. During recent sessions all the residents in the group had a chance to create a display that will be part of the Waltham in Bloom competition which The Grove enters every year. Residents are encouraged to talk about their gardening experiences, name plants and flowers as well as get hands on with planting and watering. “I’ve enjoyed watching them grow and though how nice they looked” commented one resident following a recent Gardening Club session. And that’s what the Grove is all about.

Home Improvements W
ith the economy being how it is most of us know that the safest place to invest our savings is in property - but what about when you come to sell up? What's the best way of maximising the return on your investment, without taking risks and breaking the bank along the way? Some expensive upgrades can actually reduce the value of a home - so it pays to be careful when making your choices - to make sure you get the best possible value for money.
buyer will too. If your master bedroom can be updated to take an en suite that almost always repays its cost. And if everything is looking shipshape then you could always try adding space. Extensions are great but a conservatory will also add value and provided you don’t exceed half your plot size they’re exempt from many planning regulations. Nobody likes to come home to a freezing home so maybe consider a new fireplace. It can change the whole look of a room and there's a fantastic selection available (check out Inspirations on our back page for ideas and free advice). And what about improvements that cost a little less? Well in an online age having really great broadband can be a big advantage and simply spending some money on tidying up a property, repainting and repointing for example, can pay back its cost several times over. Maybe you could give the garden a makeover - maybe get rid of ugly trees that block light and nobody loves a leylandii! Lastly remember that whatever you choose to do if your house doesn’t sell soon you may have to live with it for a while. So don’t do something you’ll live to regret! Happy house hunting!
.... so the time has come to sell the dream home ....
Let's start with the essentials. Sound electrics and plumbing, a good roof with no leaks, central heating and freedom from damp and woodworm. If there's a problem with any of these your house is seriously compromised. Get them fixed first before you consider anything else. Double glazing is almost always a good investment but remember that PVC frames don't suit period properties and if you're in a conservation area they may even be forbidden. New kitchens and bathrooms can make a huge differences to the selling price of a property but play it safe - don't install anything too unusual. Just because you like something doesn't mean that a potential

For wonderful winter colour just go in search of berried treasure
t’s been a long hot flower filled summer but things are cooling down fast and if you’re looking for winter interest for your borders then you should consider investing in some berries. Berry bearing trees and shrubs come into their own in autumn, creating colourful displays that can last well into winter. From elder berries to rose hips, crab apples to firethorns, the addition of berry plants adds a new dimension to any garden and also provides home grown food for hungry birds and wildlife too, enhancing their appeal and value to any garden. Evergreen shrubs provide structure and form throughout the year, but many produce early displays of flowers followed by autumn berries. One of the best compact shrubs for borders or patio pots are Skimmia, with their glowing red berries. You should also check out Viburnum, a hardy shrub with distinctly veined evergreen foliage that produces the most unusual metallic looking blue black berries. For seasonal pots of autumn colour include a small Gaultheria mucronata carrying brilliant berries in pink, red or pure white. Combined with pansies and violas, trailing ivy, heather, carex or skimmia your pots will put on a display that lasts for months. Trained against walls and fences, firethorn or pyracanthus is a valuable evergreen shrub. Its thorny stems make it a great choice for producing secure garden boundaries, but don’t let the spines put you off. They provide valuable nesting sites for birds, flowers that attract bees, and red, orange or yellow berries to feed birds into winter. You should also consider the cotoneaster family, attractive ornamental shrubs with year round appeal. The arching stems with herringbone patterned stalks of Cotoneaster horizontalis make it an excellent choice to carpet banks and low borders or train up to cover bare fences. Birds love these berries, quickly stripping stems bare as they stock-up for winter. With such a rich and diverse range of plants to choose from it really is possible to fill your borders with berried treasure this autumn!

e all know that fashion can lead to some surprises on occasion but there can’t be many turnarounds in fortune to match that achieved by yarncraft in the past ten years. In that time we’ve seen knitting and crochet go from being something your granny used to do to being a young people’s craft de jour, bang on trend in a retro age. So what changed? Well partly it was a people thing, the arrival of a generation who were fascinated by the styles of the post war period, combined with a response to the era of austerity which brought home

Kate Roberts is the owner and she’s a dedicated knitter with a real passion for her craft who likes nothing better than helping newcomers to learn the basics and she’s very excited at the moment because A Good Yarn has been nominated in the Best Local Independent Yarn Store: North Of England category in the British Knitting Awards 2016! yarn styles and new modish patterns. Knitting and crochet were no longer guilty pleasures - they were hobbies that women - and men too - could enjoy in public, on the bus, in the park, even down the pub! So what are the new trends in knitting for the future? Chunky knits are definitely in, and super chunky on huge size 50 needles has arrived in style, and anything with long tassels - scarves, jackets, even dresses. Black and white looks set to be a colour scheme for 2017 and heavy cable looks and Fair Isle are set for a return. So don’t delay - get your fingers running and head down on the highway to your local yarnshop and see what they’ve got to offer. We think you’ll find some surprises in store.

We’ve pointed out before that Grimsby Sewing and Knitting is one of those TARDISlike shops that seem to be bigger inside than out – well now it’s even more true because proprietors Paul and Linda Haynes have expanded their empire to include the shop next door – giving them four shop widths of space to fill with top quality haberdashery. The new shop is exclusively devoted to woolcrafts and stocks a fantastic range of yarns from top names like King Cole, Stylecraft, Woolcraft, Cygnet and Sirdar plus needles, hooks, patterns and everything you might need to get the most out of your craft. They’re always happy to give advice too, so if you’re new to the world of woolcraft just drop in one day for a chat and they’ll sort you out with all you need to get started on a project that’s affordable and achievable too!

MOTORING
WINTER’S ON THE WAY SO DON’T FORGET THESE VITAL CHECKS Antifreeze
Check coolant level regularly and, if required, top up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.
Battery
The most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure.
Fuel
Keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.
Lights
Check and clean all lights regularly and carry spare bulbs.
Tyres
Should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight.
Windscreen
Reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades.
Screen Wash
Use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.
Locks
Stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals.
and don’t forget to carry a shovel!
