Hello, I’m Richard and I launched PicaRock - the electric bike shop - nearly a year ago. We have one important rule at PicaRock and that is that we won’t sell an unsuitable bike to any customer so before you buy we insist that you come down to the shop and take your favourite machine out for a proper ride - not just a quick spin - to make sure it’s exactly perfect for you. The first step towards buying a bike from PicaRock is to come down and talk through exactly what your needs are, what kind of riding you plan to do and whether you have any balance or mobility issues. Then we’ll show you the cycles from our range that match your requirements and we’ll get your favourite out, give you a demonstration and then release you into the wild together. Afterwords we’ll have a debrief and discuss any adaptations you may need. We’ll custom fit the bike to you, swapping parts round to ensure your bike fits you perfectly. And finally it’s up to you to make a decision. We know it’s a big commitment so we won’t pressure you. It’s your call. Thank you for taking time to read this letter and we’ll hope to see you soon Richard Soulby PS We currently have a number of bespoke builds on chopper bikes double battery,1000w hub and a fantastic trike kitted with the highest specification of paint, indicators and individuality stamped all over it.

PicaRock the electric bike shop Do you feel like you'd like to take up cycling but you're not sure that you're fit enough? Maybe you're an excyclist looking to get back in the saddle again but you're a bit worried about some of those hills? If you'd like to experience the joy of cycling without all of the hardships then PicaRock, the area’s leading electric bike specialist, is just the place for you. They stock a range of pedal assisted bikes by Freego, Viking and Cyclotricity, many of which have a top speed of 15mph and a range of 50 miles on a single charge and if you don't see what you're looking for that's no problem! Just tell them what you need and PicaRock will custom build the electric bike of your dreams.

Well it’s coming to the end of the year and it’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas. Time to get the tree down out of the loft, put the paper chains up and restart the endless arguments about turkey or beef for dinner on the big day. We’ve got some good ideas about things to do during the holiday period in this issue plus a guide to the year at the Caxton Theatre - lots of great shows on the way there. So have a great Christmas and we’ll see you again in the New Year.

COME AND SEE BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE CAXTON THEATRE

H

ave you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a busy regional theatre? Did you know it takes three months from the first reading and hours of rehearsal and planning before the production is ready for opening night. And it’s not just the actors that work hard to get everything perfect. Stage managers have to be meticulous about fine detail, like getting the presidential portraits in our recent production of Same Time Next Year all correct.

JAN

And just how did we create the sound and smoke for the trains at King’s Cross in The Ladykillers? Who makes the costumes? Who builds the sets and how do they do it? To discover the answers to these questions and more why not head down to the Caxton’s Open Evening on Thursday 12th January 2017 where you’ll have the opportunity to speak to members about their roles, go backstage, have a look at the props room and wardrobe and

12

enjoy drink in our Theatre Bar. The main entrance in Cleethorpe Road will be open and free security controlled parking will be available in the Orwell Street Car Park. We also have a flourishing Youth Theatre catering for youngsters aged from 7 to 18 who are looking to either develop their stage skills or try something new. Being a member is very rewarding. It’s not just about acting or learning the technical theatre skills of lighting, sound and set building but is also about developing selfconfidence and social skills. If you’re interested in joining the Youth Theatre please e-mail caxtonyouththeatre@gmail.com giving your name, address, age, and contact details. Or come down to the Open Evening. Everyone welcome, age is immaterial and admission is free.

Sir Cliff Richard Announces Lincoln Castle Gig for 2017 There’s a big day in store for Lincolnshire music fans on 24th June next year when the UK’s most successful hit maker, Cliff Richard, who is spending the summer on a tour of the UK’s most beautiful castles and historic locations brings his show to Lincoln Castle. They’ll be erecting a special temporary arena for this fantastic event and it’s all to celebrate the release of his incredible new album Just…Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll. The album sees Cliff return to his roots for an album of his favourite songs from the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll including Roll Over Beethoven, Great Balls of Fire, Sweet Little Sixteen and his very own debut single, Move It. The album also features a duet with fellow idol Elvis Presley on Blue Suede Shoes. This has been a career long dream of Cliff’s, which now becomes reality. The new release follows the huge success of his last studio album, The Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll Songbook in 2013, and the celebratory 75 at 75 – 75 Career Spanning Hits in 2015. Cliff released his debut single Move It in August 1958. It is credited with being the first British rock ‘n’ roll hit, bringing what had previously been an American genre across the Atlantic, for the first time. Just… Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll will, astonishingly, be his 102nd album. Tickets will go on general sale on Monday 14th November from www. livenation.co.uk

BANG ON! AUDIENCES APPLAUD THE FIRST HUMBER TAIKO FESTIVAL

L

ocal drumming group Humber Taiko are celebrating the success of their first regional festival, which took place in the first week of November at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe. The festival launched with a performance from Taiko Meantime whose Legend of Dojoji told the story of Kiyohime, a young woman who falls in love with monk Anchin. It’s a tale of love and desire, which quickly transforms into rage and ruin, portrayed beautifully by Kodo’s Chieko Kojima, supported by a powerful performance from Taiko Meantime whose intense drumming contrasted with the ebb and flow of the instrumentation from various Japanese flutes and

17

shamisen (a three-stringed instrument). The show was narrated by Rev Shunjo Ono, head monk of the Dojoji temple in Japan, who is visiting the UK for the first time to join Meantime on their tour. The festival was also visited by two members of Scots group Tsuchigmo Daiko who gave a fascinating workshop and also appeared on the Friday night at The Balls Hall. This was certainly a night to remember with hundreds of young taiko players from across the Humber region taking to the stage to deliver an incredible show with a special guest performance by Kaminari Taiko from York. There was also an appearance by Scunthorpe based Tetsu Taiko who performed their community devised piece Steel Town Song which involved song, traditional Obon style dance, drum and percussion to celebrate the town’s heritage. The festival was supported by Arts Council England, North Lincolnshire Music Centre and Arts Development North Lincolnshire and of course all the parents, funders, local supporters and all those who helped make the event a resounding success.

CARE

Making the move to a care home is always a big decision. Amanda Griffiths, manager of The Grove in Waltham offers some advice on .......

How to choose the right care home

M

aking the move to a Care Home is a big decision. For some it may be a bit daunting, but for others it can be a relief that they are no longer on their own and can enjoy being cared for in the company of others. Some people may have the luxury of taking several months to choose the right care home, but for others it may need to be a quick decision following a spell in hospital. Many people arrange their own care independently and others will be led by their Local Authority or Social Worker. It’s always a good idea to do your own homework in either situation. A good tip is to know what category of care you will need - don’t assume that all homes offer all categories of care. You may need Nursing Care, Dementia Care, Nursing Dementia, or a home that caters for specific conditions or disabilities. The age group of the residents in the home may also be an important factor, as not all care homes are for the elderly. CQC and Local authority reports are a good starting place to start. On the CQC website (www.cqc.org.uk) you can search all the care homes near where you live.

Want to make life more comfortable? A lift or stairlift can increase your

It is a good idea to ask the manager of the home further questions about their report if you have any concerns or need clarification and also to visit a potential home unannounced. The staff at the care home should be happy to offer you a viewing at any time. This way you will see everyday life at any time of the day you visit. Have a list of questions ready you would like to ask. For example ask to see a copy of the menu and ask what activities are provided. Most importantly ask yourself if the staff seem friendly and the residents you see look happy. Ask to speak to one of the residents to help make up your mind about the home’s suitability. It is always a good idea take the prospective resident to visit the home before a final decision is made. This will allow you to gauge their reaction. For confidential help and advice, you can contact Amanda at The Grove Care Home at thegrove@ countrycourtcare.com. For more information about The Grove itself, you can visit www. countrycourtcare.com.

ABOUT

From time to time we hear people rattling on about how there’s never anything happening in Grimsby and Cleethorpes but we beg to differ and by way of evidence here are some pictures of just a few of the events that we’ve been fortunate enough to cover in our most recent web edition. From top left and clockwise they are as follows - Same Time Next Year at The Caxtons; The Spirit In The Machine presented by the YMCA at The Pier; Alexandra Rex, a Fusion Creative production at St Martins; The Barb Wire Dolls courtesy of Anarchy Entertainment at The Yardbirds and the We Shall Overcome Food Raiser at The Minster, featuring The Fusion Community Choir among many others.

T

he everyday task of parking in a car park has led to two thirds of motorists suffering damage to their vehicles according to new research with more than a third of drivers reporting that they had experienced this once and an unfortunate 31% saying they’d had it happen on several occasions. Nearly a quarter have seen it more than five times! The number one place for a motorist to have their car damaged is a supermarket car park, with half saying that this was where their car had picked up a scratch or dent. Public car parks such as those in town centres, shopping centres, leisure centres and libraries were frequently named too but work and privately operated car parks were mentioned by less than 10% of drivers. In the majority of cases the extent of the damage is small – but that doesn’t mean that it was cheap to fix. Major damage is a lot less common but while the cause of car park vehicle damage is usually accidental, the chances of someone owning up to it is small. Only in a tenth of cases does anyone leave a note owning up for their error. RAC Insurance director Mark Godfrey said: “It’s frightening to think that so many motorists suffer damage to their vehicles in car parks and that the people responsible hardly ever leave a note. We all use car parks every day so the chances of your car picking up a dent or scratch are pretty high, especially as vehicles have got wider over the years while parking spaces generally haven’t. “The best advice to motorists has to be to pay careful attention to where and how you park. Always try to leave a good gap either side so you limit the chances of

someone accidentally opening their car door onto your vehicle’s bodywork or scratching it as they walk past. If you are worried the gap is too small it might be best to take a couple of extra minutes and try to find a wider space. Not many motorists who find their vehicle has picked up car park damage go on to claim however, presumably because they are fearful of a combination of things including having to pay their policy excess, losing their no claims bonus or making their premium go up at renewal. So parking carefully and keeping your fingers crossed seems to be the best policy!

Always park centrally within the white lines and as straight as possible Get into the habit of reversing into parking spaces – it gives you greater control and it will be easier exiting Look for spaces at the end of a row and wider space offering more room Fold in your wing mirrors if need be In supermarket car parks steer clear of the trolley park Open your doors slowly and carefully Encourage your children to be ‘car smart’ when they are getting in and out of the vehicle Park next to smarter looking cars – they tend to have more careful owners Be courteous and considerate to other drivers and hopefully they will treat you in a similar way Best of luck with that one the
