UB40 HEADLINE MERIDIAN PARK SHOW IN JULY
I
n our last issue we featured the visit of Craig David to Meridian Park but since then we’ve had further announcements including a second fantastic day of music featuring the mighty UB40, All Saints and the deeply dippy Right Said Fred who play on Saturday 15th July. Since forming in Birmingham in 1978 UB40 have had more than fifty singles in the UK charts and have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. Their concerts have earned them a reputation for being one of the best live acts in the country and fans are assured of a great show featuring all the hits and more, including the likes of Red Red Wine, Kingston Town and Can’t Help Falling In Love. 1990s girl band All Saints had a string of hits including Lady Marmalade, Bootie Call and Never Ever before splitting in 2001 but they’re back together and better than ever and they’ll be bringing their own unique style to the event as will Right Said Fred who are sure to be way too sexy for the Prime Meridian. It certainly promises to be a great weekend and you can get more details by visiting the Meridian Park Facebook page.

So many wonderful things to see and do at the Lincolnshire Show 2017! The clock is ticking and soon it will be time for the Lincolnshire Show 2017 with loads to see and do for all the family. It’s a celebration of everything that’s great about our historic county and as always, highlights will include shopping, food, gardening exhibitions, fairground rides, music, farmyard animals, competitions, displays and countryside pursuits. This year there will be displays of
apiary, (that’s bee keeping to you and me, no apes involved), farriery (we think that’s shoeing horses) and chain saw sculpture as well as canine obedience, and a visit from the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club. That certainly sounds like
something for everyone so let’s hope that the weather stays fine and we’ll see you there for one of the best days of the Lincolnshire year! You can get more information and tickets at www.lincolnshireshow. co.uk.

f you’re a gardening enthusiast then the chances are you’ll be considering attending one of the big garden shows this summer. Chelsea is the queen of them all of course but the trip to London can be a tiring one (not to mention expensive) so you might like to consider other options for getting your flower fix this year. At Hough’s of Lincolnshire they run trips to many of the major events in the horticultural calendar and they’re always great value and much less tiring than driving yourself! Even more so since they took delivery of their new 2017 Scania touring coach offering 57 reclining seats, hot drinks facility, WC, air con and 3 point seat belts. It’s the height of luxury and simply the perfect way to travel to see what’s new in the gardener’s world.

PENTATHLON CENTRE PROPOSED FOR ST JAMES SCHOOL As part of the Mayor’s Charity Challenge St James School held an invitational duathlon, consisting of running and pistol shooting, and it was certainly an event that was enjoyed by all who took part. The shooting discipline was organised using laser pistols by representatives of Pentathlon GB and they told us that the school is under consideration to become a pentathlon centre of excellence for training young people to compete for the UK. We certainly had a terrific afternoon at the event and we’ll look forward to seeing more pentathlon and triathlon on the local sporting calender in the near future.
THE MODERN PENTATHLON The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport made up of five different events: fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, show jumping, and a final combined event of pistol shooting and a 3200m cross country run. It has been a core sport of the Olympic Games since 1912. A world championships for modern pentathlon has been held annually since 1949. The discipline was devised by the Baron de Coubertin, creator of the modern Olympics, to simulate the experience of a 19th century cavalry soldier behind enemy lines who may have to ride an unfamiliar horse, fight enemies with pistol and sword, swim, and run to return to his own soldiers.

T
he year is 1217. It’s May. King John has been dead for six months and although Henry III has been crowned he has been unable to secure his hold on the country. The Baron’s War rages and much of England is under the control of an invading French army. Lincoln Castle is one of the only remaining strongholds for the King, holding out for the royalist cause under the command of a formidable lady constable, Nicola de la Hay and supported by William Marshal, Guardian of the Realm and regent to King Henry. So the scene was set for the Battle of Lincoln, one of the most important ever fought in England. If the Royalists had lost, England would have become part of France and our king would have been Louis VIII. Instead the Plantagenet dynasty ruled for another 250 years. To commemorate the battle the City of Lincoln has organised the Knights Trail, a self-guided trail with 36 unique sculptures across Lincoln city centre. It takes you through the story of this pivotal moment in history following the locations of the Battle of Lincoln through the city.

Business It's probably true to say that most of the businesses that you'll see in The Peoples are consumer orientated but it's important to us to be aware that there's another sector that's just as important to our local economy - and that's the many firms that supply the needs of local industry. Whether it's haulage or accountancy, machining or engineering these are firms that keep out local economy turning and create our local prosperity.

GAS SAFETY
GAS SAFETY
How gas safe is your home?
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CARBON MONOXIDE DANGER BY FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE STEPS: • Trust the Triangle - only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances • Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year • All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card. Before any gas work is carried out always check the card and make sure the engineer is qualified for the work you need doing • Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm • Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. • Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames or black marks and stains
Gas Safety Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It’s co-ordinated by the Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas.
Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.
around the appliance. This could be an indication that your appliance is not working correctly and you should get it checked. • If you suspect anyone is carrying out gas work illegally, report them to Gas Safe Register. Remember to always ask to see a Gas safe register card before you let anyone work on your gas appliances! It’s also useful to know that if you’ve had gas work done in your property in the last six months, you can nominate it for a free gas safety inspection. For more information and to find and check a Gas Safe registered engineer go to www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.

An impressive range of three and four bedroom homes is now available to buy at Westleigh Homes’ Humberston Meadows development, with a Part Exchange option available to existing homeowners on selected properties. Westleigh’s Part Exchange scheme, which offers buyers a respite from the headaches of selling their own home removes the need to pay agents’ fees and ensures the purchaser secures a home of their choice without the hassle of finding a buyer for their own home. Among the properties still available at Humberston Meadows is the four bedroom Wainwright style home, offering contemporary family living over three storeys. The Wainwright boasts a spacious living room and impressive dining kitchen to the ground floor, whilst the first floor provides three bedrooms, two of which are doubles and one of which has an en-suite shower room, alongside a sizeable family bathroom. The second floor master bedroom is the jewel in the Wainwright’s crown and is also complete with a further en-suite shower room. Three bedroom homes are also available, including the Mayne style home, a modern take on the traditional townhouse. The Mayne’s major selling point is an airy, open plan ground floor with a generous dining kitchen complete with stylish French doors opening onto the rear garden, perfect for the summer months. This home is on the market from £174,950, or £139,960 at the 80% Help to Buy price. Lisa Morris, a member of the Sales team at Humberston Meadows, said: “Humberston Meadows offers the best of both worlds – an idyllic, aspirational suburban lifestyle, with straightforward access to the larger towns nearby. This development offers a great option for families looking to escape the hustle and bustle and settle down. “Humberston offers everything a growing family needs, with schools catering for ages 4 - 18 and a fantastic range of local amenities including shops, bars and restaurants, while Cleethorpes beach is only a short drive away.” For more information on Humberston Meadows, visit the on-site marketing suite, open daily 10:00 to 17:00. Alternatively, visit www.westleigh.co.uk/ humberston-meadows for site plans, prices and a virtual tour of the four-bedroom Buttermere style property. You can also keep up to date with the latest from Westleigh on Twitter and Facebook.
The event began at the Prime Meridian with the launch attended by local MPs Melanie Onn and Martin Vickers and local councillors as well as the ATC wheelbarrow display team The Red Barrows and the Scrubs the Bear, mascot of the Health Tree Foundation. Challenges included carpet bowls in Humberston, swimming in Immingham, curling at the Leisure Centre and squash at Millfields Hotel in Bargate. There was also a visit to the Grimsby Islamic Centre on Weelsby Road before the journey came to an end at The Discovery Centre.

British style and German quality at a surprisingly affordable price
Continental Style Do you have a big stack of interior design magazines on your coffee table? Do you spend your weekends hauling round design superstores, gazing in awe at the displays? Do you have a collection of catalogues and brochures that you love to get out and pore over when you think that no-one is looking? If you answered yes to any of the above then the chances are you're a design junky, just like us, and you're probably a fan of all things continental too. There was a time when NE Lincs was a bit of a backwater when it came to up to the minute design chic but fortunately that has changed and there are plenty of local suppliers who can help us fulfil our cravings, including Kensway Blinds, with their fantastic range of quality window furnishings and Style Bathrooms with their superb Italian chic. Not forgetting Kitchen Discount of course - superb German craftsmanship combined with top British design. Which means that whatever room you’re thinking of upgrading, you don’t need to look out of town - because there’s so much superb style right here on our doorsteps!
