Mariculture - Increasing the Value of Your Seafood Business

Electronic Monitoring of Commercial Fisheries: Challenges and Opportunities

Several options exist for increasing the value of your seafood business: 1) get more money for your seafood (marketing), 2) fully utilize 100% of your catch (product development), and 3) catch/ produce more seafood (mariculture). This panel will focus on how to catch and produce more seafood through mariculture – specifically, through enhancement of wild fisheries. The Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF) is spearheading an initiative to grow a $1 billion mariculture industry in 30 years. The panel of speakers will discuss examples of successful mariculture industries around the world, the obstacles and success stories of developing mariculture in Alaska, and ideas for how to effectively move forward in the future.

The National Marine Fisheries Service has been fast tracking electronic monitoring (EM) to augment at-sea monitoring of commercial fisheries. The US West Coast Groundfish IFQ and Alaskan Groundfish fixed gear fleets have been leaders with large scale EM implementation projects with a total of over 50 vessels carrying EM systems in 2015. These studies have provided a valuable opportunity for learning about the implementation of EM. The panel discussion will address both programs, and the real-world challenges and opportunities that fishers encounter when moving into an EM program

The Future of CFEC: As We Know It Main Stage The Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission (CFEC) has served the commercial fishing industry in Alaska well for over 40 years, and now stands at a crossroads. What does the future hold for CFEC, and what role do fishermen have to play in shaping this future? Petersburg public radio KFSK reported on November 2nd that, “Deputy Commissioner [of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game] Kevin Brooks said the . . . department . . . is also looking at cost savings that could come with a proposed reorganization or elimination of the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission, the organization in charge of vessel licensing and permits for commercial fisheries.” With their license fees, Commercial fishermen more than pay for the cost of operating CFEC, and the additional revenue goes to Fish & Game for management of Alaska commercial fisheries. Falling oil prices and reduced oil production have left Alaska state government in fiscal crisis. In these times of change, the panelists will share what information they have and attempt to answer questions from those in attendance. Design and engineering innovations: Detailed 3D laser scanning processes of subject vessel. Scan data is imported into CAD software, allowing the creation of 3D computer models, allowing for very precise design and engineering calculations to be performed. Construction innovation: A dedicated mold system allows sponsoning to be undertaken in a more “Production” atmosphere, resulting in cost and duration efficiencies. (Although sponsoned steel vessels are common, fiberglass sponsoning is seldom undertaken, being a costly and time consuming, custom “One-off” process).

This presentation will offer ideas on providing a lower risk, healthy and entertaining environment for children on family commercial and recreational vessels.

Industrial Mining In Transboundary Watersheds Main Stage A modern-day gold rush is underway in British Columbia (B.C.). Numerous existing and proposed large-scale B.C. mines are located in the “transboundary” Taku, Stikine and Unuk watersheds that straddle the northwest British Columbia/Southeast Alaska border. Because these mining projects involve some of the world’s largest open pits and tailings dams in some of Alaska’s most productive salmon rivers, Alaskans are concerned about the impacts of this large-scale mining on water quality and fisheries in the region. Speakers will screen a ~7-min. film on this issue, and then further discuss the need for the U.S. Department of State to take action under the Boundary Waters Treaty to ensure real policy changes and protections occur in these watersheds shared by the U.S. and Canada. Fishing for Alaska History Main Stage Few topics are more important to the identity of Alaska than the history of the seafood industry. In this group presentation, Bob King will talk about the history of fishing in Bristol Bay, director of the Kodiak Maritime Museum Toby Sullivan will talk about Kodiak fishing history, and Anjuli Grantham of the Alaska Historical Society will talk about efforts to document and preserve the history of seafood processing in the state. Not only will the audience learn something, but they might even have something to share. Beyond Fatalities: Injuries and Injury Prevention in the Dungeness Crab Fleet Concourse Level Stage Everyone says the Dungeness crab fishery is the most dangerous on the west coast. But is it? Truth is, we don’t really know. Until now, we haven’t known much about non-fatal injuries, which can keep fishermen from working, shorten careers in fishing, force a vessel to return to port, and leave a crew shorthanded. Dungeness crab fishermen are helping researchers identify ways to prevent injuries. What do you do to be safe on the water and in port? Come to this discussion at PME 2015 and make your voice heard.

Alaska’s Coastlines at your Fingertips Video and still imagery is available to the public for more than 86% of the Alaska coastline from the Arctic to Southeast Alaska. The public can access and view this video imagery for free as well as download the high resolution photos and access the corresponding database with corresponding habitat mapping data for the coastline. This free product is referred to as ShoreZone. The ShoreZone dataset includes both low-tide coastal imagery and habitat mapping data. Over four million images of the Alaskan coastline are web-posted, georeferenced and down-loadable at: http://alaskafisheries.noaa.gov/ mapping/szflex/. Imagery is also available on-line for Oregon Washington State’s coastline (by fall 2015). This presentation is intended for all boat owners and operators including commercial, charter, and pleasure boaters who operate vessels in the Pacific Northwest.
