IFE SHOW PREVIEW 2016 3
FLORAL EDUCATION OVERVIEW
Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2016 International Floriculture Expo in beautiful Chicago. We’re excited to bring you our best show yet, with three days of education, exhibition, interactive events, networking, and access to the top thought leaders in the industry. Here, you’ll find all the resources you need to stay on the cutting edge of the floral, produce, supply chain and food retail categories. Once again, we’re partnering with United Fresh and FMI Connect, and this year we are introducing a partnership with the Global Cold Chain Alliance by co-locating with the Global Cold Chain Expo. We’re bringing back all the sessions, exhibits, and features that past attendees have told us made a big impact on their business. And we are pleased to introduce brand new presentations and exhibits that explore the latest global and European trends in the industry. Highlights include Education Day and a keynote luncheon with Doug Stevens, founder of Retail Prophet and rated one of the Top 50 Retail Influencers in the world. We’ll also be featuring our annual Toast to the Industry Reception, brought to you in partnership with burton + BURTON; and the Merchandising Awards of Excellence, Flower Naming Ceremony, the always-popular Iron Designer Competition, and much more. Please reference the schedule in this program for a full list and details of all show events. We’re looking forward to an exciting and successful show, made possible by all your continued support and contributions to the industry. Thanks for all you do in the floral community.
See you in Chicago!

IFE to bring mass-market global trends to Chicago The International Floriculture Expo June 20-22 in Chicago will offer education sessions on European floral merchandising, touch upon other global floral programs, and deliver content targeting local florists. “Europe is ahead of the curve and an international panel will discuss the latest trends and in-store promotions that set Europe apart from the rest of the world,” IFE’s marketing manager Justin Childs told The Produce News. “These trends and predictions will undoubtedly drive consumer purchasing in other markets, like the United States. Additionally, Rene Van Rems will present on how supermarket floral can gain a competitive advantage by learning about the global trends. ” Co-located with the United Fresh Produce Association’s convention, FMI Fresh Connect, and the Global Cold Chain

Alliance, the three-day exhibition is for all segments of the floral trade, from farm to distribution to the supermarket. This year will also incorporate education sessions targeting independent and multi-unit florists and wholesalers. One of the more popular events at the expo each year is the Iron Designer competition. This year’s theme is “Still Life: Fusion of Produce & Floral,” where designers will compete against a clock and other designers on a mission to create the best display inspired by 17th century European still life paintings and produce items. “Unknown to the average consumer, for several centuries floral designers incorporated produce into their displays,” said IFE event manager Christine Salmon. “We integrated produce into our competition last year as a celebration of a new-formed partnership with United Fresh, but this year we’re stepping it up a notch.” While there are several other education programs in store for both mass market and florists, show management advises that time should be allocated wisely to ensure buyers and suppliers are optimizing exhibit hall hours to take advantage of the many opportunities available. With 225 exhibitors showcasing everything from cut flowers to containers in over 60,000 square feet of exhibit space, IFE is considered North America’s largest business-to-business trade show for the floral industry. More than 5,500 floral and produce professionals attended the shows last year and this year’s edition is anticipated to be even bigger and better.

Join Frederique as she discusses her journey to starting her own floral brand, Frederique’s Choice, and learn how she spreads floral inspiration with her new TV show, Homegrown Makeover. Frederique van der Wal is the Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Frederique’s Choice, a lifestyle e-commerce and content brand centered around all things flowers. As one of the most recognized faces in the modeling world, she has taken her phenomenal global success in fashion and beauty and translated it into a career that spans the worlds of fashion, film, television and business. Frederique has appeared on the covers of beauty and fashion magazines worldwide, including Vogue and Cosmopolitan; in prestigious campaigns including Revlon, Guess?, MCI and Victoria’s Secret, and has been profiled in such varied magazines as Forbes and InStyle. In 2005, Frederique’s native Holland bestowed the great distinction of naming a lily in her honor. The Frederique’s Choice Lily was unveiled at a ceremony in Amsterdam, and inspired her to develop, produce and host a television program called “The Invisible Journey” with the Discovery Channel, which traced the route a flower travels from the growing fields of Africa through the markets and auction houses in the Netherlands to a special event in New York City. “The Invisible Journey” led Frederique to create a lifestyle brand within the flower industry, Frederique’s Choice. Flowers have always played an inspirational role in Frederique’s life. Since its launch in Europe, Frederique’s Choice has been featured internationally to great acclaim. She has produced and hosted numerous television shows for multiple broadcast and cable networks, and is currently Host and Executive Producer on Homegrown Makeover on AETN’s newest network FYI for a 10-episode TV series that uses flowers as a vehicle for home transformations.

Q&A
with Ahold USA Category Manager of Floral
Kevin Prill is responsible for the cut flower category for more than 750 stores, spanning New England, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. What does he look for in a vendor? In a product? How will millennials play a role in the future?
Q
Tell us about your history in the floral category:
I am the cut flower category manager for Ahold USA, parent company of retail divisions Stop & Shop New England, Stop & Shop New York Metro, Giant Carlisle and Giant Landover. I am responsible for all aspects of the cut flower category for more than 750 stores, spanning New England, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. I have been in the supermarket industry since 1985 and in floral for more than 25 years. I started my career at Finast Supermarkets which eventually became Stop & Shop Supermarkets and during this time I have held the positions of floral manager, floral specialist and floral buyer for Stop and Shop.
What do you look for in a vendor and in a product?
I look for a vendor that wants to create a true partnership in support of our Reshaping Retail Promises, and in particular “Better Place to Shop.” Our goals must align – to sell top quality product that shoppers want. I need to know I can trust a vendor to do the

Q
Have you ever had to balance price, sustainability, and responsible sourcing?
Ahold requires that all vendors be certified, so sustainability and responsible sourcing aren’t so much of a balance but a requirement.
Q
Additionally, for 7 years I worked at A&P Supermarkets as a category manager of floral, running the day to day operations of the floral business for over 350 stores. I returned to Ahold USA in 2014 where I am the current category manager of cut flowers.
Q
right thing including giving us the best price, great quality, great freshness, and service. We seek vendors that are innovative, creative and flexible. Additionally, we ensure the vendors we use are socially compliant and certified.
How important are shows like IFE to your role?
These shows are very important because they are a great opportunity to concentrate on the product. Pictures do not always do the product justice so it is good to have the opportunity to see, touch and smell the product in person. Shows like IFE offer great interactive, educational opportunities with informative speakers about important topics in the industry and they help us stay on top of NEW ideas. Not only is it great to see new items, programs and vendor partners but it is also helpful to see how the product can be merchandised/displayed and to collaborate with the vendor to see if we can find a way to come up with a combined program.
Q
Where do you see the industry heading?
In my opinion I think the industry will only get stronger. The technology is getting better and better every day and vendors are doing more thinking outside the box to come up with new and interesting ideas and concepts. Customers want new and different products, and it’s our job to deliver.
Q
How are millennials playing a role?
Millennials are an important group and are projected to be one of the largest demographics in 2017. This group engages through social media and I think they are looking beyond traditional products and are challenging us to be more creative and innovative – all at a good price.

IFE partners with Global Cold Chain Expo, United Fresh and FMI Connect in Chicago After the International Floriculture Expo’s successful colocation with the United Fresh Produce Association show and the Food Marketing Institute’s Connect last year, the Global Cold Chain Expo has been added to the growing partnership. The three-day multi-event will take place again this year at McCormick Place in Chicago, June 20-22. “Last year, we established great momentum as a result of our partnership with the United Fresh Produce Association,” Justin Childs, IFE key buyer manager, said. “It truly ignited a renewed sense of energy at our show, where produce and floral teams could visit together. We’re thrilled to welcome the Global Cold Chain Expo, featuring 25,000 square feet of exhibits including material handling, warehousing, construction, supply chain and logistics solutions, and transportation providers. Undoubtedly the addition of Global Cold Chain will be an attraction for visitors and our floral exhibitors alike. The partnerships hold true to our promise of covering every aspect of the floral
industry, from supply to retail.” IFE is considered the largest trade show for retail floral in North America, with 225 exhibitors in over 60,000 square feet of exhibit space. “We offer products covering every segment of retail floral, not only in our vast exhibit hall, but also in our meaningful education program,” said Childs. Childs believes the education program is a highlight of the show. “We cover a wide range of topics, and our sessions are very interactive and collaborative,” he said. “We’ll have experts on sales and customer service staff training, postharvest care, and of course merchandising and trends.” This year’s edition of IFE is anticipated to be even bigger and better than 2015. “Last year, 5,500 attendees visited the IFE and United Fresh. We are in great shape this year, engaging our audiences early, so we expect an increase in attendance over last year,” said Childs.

FLORAL EDUCATION OVERVIEW
Software developed exclusively for the floral industry looks to increase efficiencies and nurture vendor relationships
Komet Sales is a software as a service platform that has been developed from the ground up exclusively for the floral industry. The platform provides all of the necessary tools that allow flower growers, importers and wholesalers to efficiently manage their operations. Its team of 40+ individuals is constantly improving the system based on the suggestions from its worldwide user base of 3,000+ flower industry professionals. By having a strong focus on the sales and purchasing aspects of the
business, Komet Sales allows each of these areas to operate faster and more efficiently. Users spend less time working on their daily tasks and are able to spend more time on value added activities that strengthen the company’s customer and vendor relationships. The system provides order entry, prebooks, purchase orders, standing orders, accounts receivable, inventory management, scanning, bar code labeling, business intelligence, e-commerce, and pricing among other capabilities.
Nowadays the company is focused on developing new technologies that provide tighter integration capabilities between floral companies aiming to facilitate and increase business to business transactions. Komet Sales’ ultimate goal is to become the standard in the floral industry.
