Switchback 2025 Event Guide

JUNE 16-18, 2025 NASHVILLE, TN

JUNE 16-18, 2025 NASHVILLE, TN
Built with intention, Switchback Spring will be a space for the outdoor industry community to do business, build relationships, learn, and get inspired—all with the goal of advancing and supporting outdoor retailers, brands, media, non-profit organizations, and more. The Switchback team, with support from our partners and the industry, created this gathering from the ground up. As an inaugural event, there are no set traditions or processes carried over from previous editions, which is both an opportunity and an exciting challenge. With that, we’re thrilled to share a preview of all that’s ahead this June in Nashville! The purpose of this guide is to share what the outdoor community can expect at Switchback Spring. From the exhibiting brand list to education sessions and networking events, this will be your comprehensive resource to learning more about the gathering and preparing for three days in Nashville.
As we eagerly anticipate the debut of Switchback Spring in Nashville, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation for your support and the confidence you've placed in our vision. The collective energy surrounding this inaugural gathering is inspiring.
We’re committed to the outdoor industry. We're not just creating another event—we’re building a hub for business growth and community. And because of your support, Switchback Spring will be exactly that.
More than a profession, being part of the outdoor industry fosters a powerful sense of community, bound by a shared passion and a unique culture. We support each other, stand together when challenges arise, and celebrate the collective wins.
As we all know, the outdoor industry is at a critical turning point, facing significant shifts. While we've navigated uncertainty before, our strength has always been in our unity and ability to work together, and Switchback is designed to be the place where that vital collaboration happens.
In developing this gathering, we moved beyond the traditional trade show model. We are cultivating meaningful connections through dedicated networking opportunities and community-focused spaces. We are actively amplifying the narratives of emerging brands by providing platforms for their stories and innovations. We are facilitating dialogue and delivering actionable insights through impactful education.
To maximize your experience at Switchback Spring, we encourage you to:
• MEET SOMEONE NEW: Say hello, start a conversation. You never know where it might lead.
• JOIN THE EDUCATION SESSIONS: There’s a lot happening in our industry. Let’s learn from each other.
• SHOW UP FOR THE IN-BETWEEN MOMENTS: That coffee line? It might be where your next big connection happens.
• WALK EVERY AISLE OF THE EXHIBIT HALL: These brands support and believe in the outdoor industry, and you might just discover the next big thing!
If we haven’t met yet, I hope we do in Nashville. Thanks again for being part of Switchback: We’re building something great—together.
Sincerely, Christina
Business is at the core of Switchback, and nothing can replace face-to-face meetings and real-life discovery. From meeting with existing suppliers or customers to stumbling upon an emerging brand, in-person gatherings spark business and innovation.
Switchback Spring will feature a lineup of leading and emerging outdoor brands spanning hard-and soft-good categories, including footwear, apparel, hiking, camping, trail running, hydration, nutrition, accessories, technology, and first aid. With a sold-out exhibit hall featuring 170+ brands, attendees will have two full trade show days to connect with exhibitors, discover products, and get a glimpse into the industry’s future.
A key driver of Switchback’s growth has been from the encouragement of our cornerstone exhibitors, retailers, and industry partners, as they’re eager to see the energy and engagement around this style of event continue. We’re inspired by the opportunity to build a bridge between the known need for discovery – of new brands, new relationships, and new ways to grow.
– CHRISTINA HENDERSON, SWITCHBACK DIRECTOR
At Switchback, we believe inspiration happens when people and communities come together. That inspiration might be found during a conversation with a new friend, an education session, or a newto-you product. While it can be difficult to find inspiration in uncertain and challenging moments, that makes it all the more important. Wherever you find it, we hope it creates ripple effects through your team, your business, and ultimately, the outdoor industry.
We’ll say it again: Nothing quite compares to face-to-face connection. Something special happens when people come together: ideas are sparked, friendships are made, and experiences are shared. Often, the most valuable education comes from your peers—the people who understand your customers and day-to-day challenges. Everyone at Switchback Spring will access intentional opportunities to connect, whether through show floor happy hours, evening receptions, off-site adventures, or serendipitous meetings in the hotel lobby. Share your successes, discuss your challenges, reminisce on old times, and make new friends. A successful, thriving industry is built on the collaboration and connection of those who comprise it.
For any industry, education is key to progress—which is why outdoor retailers and brands will find a thoughtful lineup of sessions and speakers at Switchback Spring.
The 2025 education program is built around the outdoor industry’s current goals, needs, and challenges. Built in close collaboration with Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), the program will cover outdoor trends and consumer behaviors, innovative business and marketing strategies, public lands advocacy, change management, and more.
Specialty retailers and other industry members will access targeted insights relevant to their business and career and will leave Switchback with ideas and strategies that can be implemented right away.

– KENT EBERSOLE PRESIDENT, OIA
Jim Weber, former CEO of Brooks, in conversation with Melanie “Mel” Strong, founding partner at NEXT VENTURES, will share the formula that re-founded and transformed Brooks from a business on the brink of bankruptcy into a $1.4B global powerhouse and industry leader able to stand tall against world class brands. From leading with purpose and driving innovation to cultivating customer obsession and building more trusting workplace cultures, Weber will reveal the key decisions that fueled Brooks’ success. His keynote will offer outdoor retailers and brands powerful takeaways on strong leadership, adapting to change and disruption, and building an organization that can sustain—and thrive—through challenges.
Melanie “Mel” Strong Founding Partner, NEXT VENTURES
Mel started her career as a first grade teacher and journalist. A chance meeting at the Boston Marathon led to an interview for an entry level job at Nike. She spent 17 years there, where she led businesses including Nike Women and Nike Skateboarding, and worked on the launch of the Nike Running and Training Club apps. In 2019 she left to co-found venture capital firm NEXT VENTURES, focused on early stage investments across health and wellness in companies like Oura Ring and Outside Inc. She serves on the boards of Cofertility, Ramble Campgrounds, Sage Hospitality, Outdoor Afro, and USA Cycling, and when she’s not traveling you can find her mountain biking on the trails in Hood River, Oregon.
MONDAY,
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Gaylord Opryland
As former CEO of Brooks Running, Jim Weber took the company from the brink of bankruptcy to a billion-dollar global performance brand—earning the backing of Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett along the way.
Jim’s strategy centered on focus, innovation, and culture, transforming Brooks into a company built on purposedriven leadership and customer obsession. By investing in cuttingedge technology, biomechanics research, and sustainable practices, he positioned Brooks as an industry leader in both performance and brand loyalty. His ability to navigate economic downturns, market shifts, supply chain disruption, and fierce competition proved instrumental in the company’s long-term success.
In 2017, Jim was faced with a new personal challenge—he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, with complications leading to the loss of the use of one lung. He emerged from the experience cancer-free, and the life-altering experience gave him an even deeper perspective and focus on making the most of life’s journey every day.

Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is a member-based collective and passionate group of business leaders, climate experts, policy makers and outdoor enthusiasts committed to sustainable economic growth while protecting – and growing access to – the benefits of the outdoors for everyone.
The number one request I hear from both long-time veterans of our industry and the rising next generation is ‘give us a great place to gather.’ The Switchback team has a proven track record of success, and we’re excited to collaborate with them on growing an event that can deliver multiple benefits to a wide range of outdoor industry members.
– KENT EBERSOLE, PRESIDENT, OIA
In 2024, Switchback and OIA formed a strategic partnership to strengthen the impact and effectiveness of the twice-annual gathering.
Debuting at Switchback Spring 2025, the year-round partnership will be a key tool in supporting industry connections and growth. Switchback and OIA will work together to welcome specialty retailers, brands, organizations, and media with a vested interest in foundational outdoor experiences – time on the trail, at the campsite, and as part of the year-round outdoor lifestyle.
As the Official Event Partner, OIA is collaborating with Switchback to:
ENHANCE the event with key learnings from leading outdoor industry data, legacy knowledge of essential and emerging issues, and deep connections throughout the outdoor industry community.
BUILD and recommend education sessions and speakers, host special events, and support industry initiatives.
PROVIDE OIA members with discounted exhibitor rates at Switchback events, in addition to the broad range of benefits already included in their annual memberships.
Partnership and collaboration are essential to the success of the outdoor industry, as well as Switchback.
Trusted for their expertise, experience, and leadership, Switchback partner organizations will guide initiatives, education, and more at the debut gathering. These organizations represent a wide range of outdoor focus areas, including conservation, participation, education, leadership, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

American Trail Running Association (ATRA) was formed in mid-1996 as a Colorado not for profit corporation to serve the mountain, ultra & trail (MUT) running community. Our mission is to represent and promote mountain, ultra & trail running. We offer individual, club, race and corporate memberships. One of our primary benefits is our quarterly newsletter, Trail Times. Our newsletter includes a national events calendar, thoughtful articles, and timely information about our sport.
Black Men Run-TURF is for the runners that like to get off-road, occasionally put in super long miles, and don’t mind busting their asses every once in a while. Trail and ultrarunning requires a special kind of crazy, and we want to continue to build upon this amazing community.

Founded Outdoors: Entrepreneurs need specific skill sets, industry knowledge, and professional connections to drive business growth. Historically, however, access to these resources has been limited based on demographic, geographic, and socioeconomic factors. Alongside our partners, we’re building support – programming, community, mentorship, and financing – to make it possible for entrepreneurs from all different backgrounds to build successful companies.
The Futurist Project is the leadership and education hub for the outdoor industry. Its premier program, the Leadership Academy, was born out of The Skip Yowell Future Leadership Academy which started in 2015. The organization relaunched in 2022 as The Futurist Project and quickly expanded to offer other programs aimed at meeting the needs of more people in the outdoor industry.
Leave No Trace (LNT) accomplishes its mission by providing innovative education, skills, research and science to help people care for the outdoors. By working with the public and those managing public lands, LNT focuses on educating people—instead of costly restoration programs or access restrictions—as the most effective and least resource-intensive solution to land protection.
LGBTQ Outdoors’ mission is connecting the LGBTQIA+ community to the outdoors and to one another. We strive to create a national network of inclusive outdoor spaces and community-based chapters that foster environments of safety, connection, and belonging. By promoting and advocating for queer inclusion in the outdoor industry, we aim to increase representation and support, strengthening connections within our community and fostering a love for the outdoors.
The Nashville Food Project was born from the idea that ALL people should have access to the food they want and need. We know that one in seven people in Nashville lacks access to enough food to sustain a healthy lifestyle. But we also know that more than 40% of all the food in our city goes to waste. Solutions to hunger take much more than simple handouts. Poverty, unemployment, low wages and escalating housing costs all contribute to the challenges that the most vulnerable residents of our city face. The Nashville Food Project embraces a vision of vibrant community food security in which everyone in Nashville has access to the food they want and need through a just and sustainable food system.
Outdoor Diversity Alliance helps outdoor companies grow with purpose and move from selfdriven, internal diversity, equity and inclusion work to shared, collective action. We bring best practices forward and work together to build a prosperous and thriving industry.
Outdoor Foundation is dedicated to getting people outside for their health, the health of communities and the health of the outdoor industry. Running Industry Diversity Coalition, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was founded in October 2020 as an educational organization with a mission that extends beyond running. Dedicated to championing transformative change within the sport, the RIDC partners with brands, race events, retailers, and run clubs to ignite unparalleled advancements for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color in the running industry.
Trust for Public Land is a national nonprofit that works to connect everyone to the benefits and joys of the outdoors. Quality parks and green spaces are fundamental to sustaining equitable, resilient communities. Access to nature and the outdoors—close to home, in the cities and communities where people live—is a matter of health, equity, and justice. That’s why we work alongside communities across the country to create, protect, and steward the naturerich places that are vital to human well-being. We’re driven by four commitments: equity, health, climate, and community.

Many retail experts refer to merchandising as the “silent salesperson.”
A store’s layout, fixtures, signage, and overall atmosphere trigger customer behavior, often before shoppers interact with employees.
When people walk into a store, they make a wide range of judgments and decisions based on what they see and how they feel in the space. To win over customers and convert sales, outdoor stores need a solid merchandising scheme that sends the right message. We asked the merchandising gurus at 3 Dots Design to share tips on how outdoor specialty stores can improve their shops and incorporate new retail trends. You can see examples of these tips by visiting the Retail Innovation Space - presented by 3 Dots Design – in the Switchback Spring exhibit hall.
One challenge we often see in outdoor, run, and bike shops is too much product on the floor. The retail trend in other channels is to have fewer products on the floor for easier shopping and a better overall merchandising presentation. A sales floor packed with products can overwhelm customers and cause them to lose focus. Plus, some people feel anxious in tight spaces, and they might abandon their shopping trip due to that discomfort.
Many outdoor, run, and bike stores hesitate to integrate mannequins into their merchandising for fear of taking up too much space. Also, some shop owners feel that mannequins are reserved for more “boutique-like” fashion stores. Unfortunately, these store owners also complain about poor apparel sales and say clothing never sells in their stores! The two points are most certainly related. Displaying outdoor clothing on mannequins will bring the clothing to life and allow shoppers to see full outfits, which enables them to more easily incorporate pieces into their wardrobe. Also, mannequins give apparel form and shape, which greatly improves the “curb appeal” of the clothes and provides an added dimension that hanger displays can’t convey. Investing in some torso forms, leg forms, and full-body mannequins is critical for selling apparel.
If you’ve purchased a phone or computer at an Apple store, you’ve experienced their mobile checkout system, which works exceptionally well. More retailers are adopting similar checkout systems, because they allow customers to complete their purchases quickly and easily while avoiding long lines. Also, a mobile checkout system opens up retail square footage for products and displays.
Even stores without mobile systems are reducing the size of checkout counters. At Fleet Feet Youngstown in Cleveland, OH, 3 Dots Design created a checkout area significantly smaller than what you encounter at most Fleet Feet stores. The checkout area also serves as a tech bar to save space and streamline customer interactions. 10 to 12 years ago, retailer counters measured 8 to 10 feet long; however, in recent years, they’ve measured 5 to 8 feet in length.
Retailers are finding creative ways to make shopping a more interactive experience for customers. Some stores have added digital touch screens, while others have taken GPS watches, headlamps, and massage products out of the boxes so that customers can touch and feel them. Some shops even offer samples of the food and beverages they sell for backpacking, trail running, and mountain biking.
Another big retail trend is to incorporate modern seating areas that allow customers to relax and linger longer, which can lead to additional sales. Some shops are even installing beverage services, cafes, and beer taprooms, because these elements not only invite shoppers to hang out for a while but also create social gathering spaces. For example, Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder, CO, partnered with Ampersand Coffee Roasters, who designed in-store cafes for free. In exchange, the shops sell the coffee Ampersand roasts. It’s a great partnership that ensures stores use proper equipment and an effective layout for the coffee shop.
In Portsmouth, NH, people shopping at Treeline Outfitters can relax at the in-store taproom and enjoy locally crafted beers. By giving locals a place to gather, the taproom helps store owners Cody and Emily Whelan fulfill their mission to make their shop a community hub rather than just a retail store.

Retailers, manufacturers, reps, nonprofits, and media members have traditionally spent valuable time together hiking, running, climbing, paddling, skiing, and more. These experiences have forged strong relationships that were reinforced at conferences and other national gatherings.
“The outdoor industry is more than just business; it’s a shared passion and a powerful community,” says Christina Henderson, Switchback Director.
Over the last few years, though, the COVID-19 pandemic and other market forces have frayed connections in the outdoor industry. The pandemic reduced the number of face-to-face gatherings, and new economic pressures made it more challenging to travel and share time on trails and show floors.
While the industry has become fragmented, it’s important that we, as a community, meet face to face.
If we stay in our silos and only communicate digitally, we lose the ability to connect on a more personal and meaningful level.
The outdoor industry has always been unique compared to other parts of the working world. More than a collection of companies, it is a constellation of people who not only share financial ties but also find common ground in a love of exploring wild places. Continued
At industry gatherings, you can interact with peers you don’t normally encounter and gain insight from their experiences. National shows offer access to business leaders you wouldn’t see or meet otherwise. While walking the aisles, you can discover new brands, products, and organizations that benefit your business. And networking events and education sessions provide learnings into issues affecting the industry beyond your own backyard.
One of the chief benefits of attending an industry event is the chance to step outside your world, meet with peers, and gain a fresh perspective on the market. For Brian Mildenstein, owner of Fin & Feather in Iowa City, IA, industry gatherings provide an excellent opportunity to meet people he wouldn’t see otherwise. He’s looking forward to meeting another shop owner who wrote an article about the relationship between retailers and manufacturers.
“His shop is in Idaho, so I’m never going to run into him, and I’m not going to fly out to Idaho and just sit down and have a coffee,” says Mildenstein. “But I can do that at a national show.”
Mildenstein says he gets valuable information by talking with retailers from other parts of the country. “Our shops might be different, but we have things in common,” he says, adding that a show is a non-threatening environment where “people gladly share information.”
Retailers commonly feel isolated and wonder if they’re making the right moves to address national trends. At events, shop owners can consult with peers to better understand the market. “The most educational part of going to a trade show is talking to somebody else with the same experiences as you,” says Whitney Connell, owner of Hays Co. Outfitters in San Marcos, TX. “You can talk with someone who is not necessarily trying to sell you something.”
Another advantage of attending an in-person event is that it provides retailers access to a variety of company representatives. Mildenstein says his suggestions and concerns for manufacturers don’t always make it past the reps to reach people higher in the chain of command. A show like Switchback Spring lets him talk directly with executives and other brand leaders. “You can have a meaningful conversation with a marketing person or maybe a sales manager and tell them things that would really help,” says Mildenstein.
Many Switchback exhibitors are staffing their booths with a range of personnel, such as brand managers and marketing team members, so they can highlight various aspects of the company and share a variety of product stories.
With the outdoor market becoming more competitive, retailers must differentiate themselves. To do this, dealers can attend a show like Switchback Spring to discover new products and emerging brands.
“There’s great value in being able to walk an aisle and see something that jumps out at you,” says Kerri Olson,
outdoor apparel senior buyer for Piragis Northwoods Company in Ely, MN.
People often pack their schedule with appointments to make the most of a show, but it’s wise to set aside time to explore the show floor. You might discover something intriguing. Plus, you can quickly get an overall sense of design and style trends.
While Switchback Spring helps dealers stay current with product trends, it also provides a forum for people to discuss significant issues impacting the outdoor industry.
The education program, which spans over all three days of the event, includes presentations and panel sessions covering timely, critical topics, such as threats to public lands and the forces affecting relationships between retailers and manufacturers.
It’s one thing to read news stories about these issues or view reactions on social media, but only by being in the room can you get a real sense of how people feel—and what they’re actually doing.
“The way you create community is not by having a Zoom meeting,” says Mildenstein. “You do it by coming together and talking.”
As event organizers, the Switchback team knows firsthand the importance of gathering industries in-person. The team was asked to share what they’re most looking forward to at Switchback; below are some of their answers:
