WELCOME

WELCOME TO TRE 2018 O

n behalf of The Running Event team and Diversified Communications, we welcome you back to Austin and look forward to an exciting and productive

show. We are very proud of this year’s event and the many exciting programs we have planned to celebrate the specialty running channel. This year’s event would not have been possible without the vision of our colleagues and friends Mark Sullivan and Troy Leonard. They have been extremely generous in sharing their long-time relationships with exhibitors, store owners and thought leaders. They have shown us many times what makes The

Bill Springer EVP, Diversified Communications bspringer@divcom.com

Running Event so special. In the past six months, I’ve had the good fortune to meet with a number of key players in the industry. It was a busy summer, but I certainly enjoyed meeting so many passionate people committed to their customers’ health and wellbeing. These meetings have only enhanced our desire to continue to deliver an outstanding event to all stakeholders. As you may have heard, we are bringing some exciting new features to this year’s event. Last year’s bra salon was a success, so we’re expanding it to include a full athleisure storefront. We’re adding the Trailhead Stage, devoted to the growing, changing trail business, with support from the American Trail Running Association. And I hope to see you at the Annual Indie 5K — run this year at Hancock Golf Course, one of Texas’s oldest and most historic courses. It

I’ll be sure to say “hello” as I walk the show floor or when I’m in the Show Management Booth #449, or contact me at bspringer@divcom.com. Parker Karnan has worked with hundreds of business owners and learned the inherent challenges entrepreneurs face as they work to create a thriving business. To Parker, it’s less about what you know now and more about what you will figure out next. CIAO, AUSTIN. BOOTH 1131

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS How To Green Your Race Presented by Recover Brands Make your race environmentally sound. Learn from races that have done it, including The Big Sur Marathon. Mark Cucuzzella

Back to the Future: Lydiard Principles for the Modern Runner and Retail Store Presented by Mark Cucuzzella MD, FAAFP, and Lorraine Moller, 1984 Boston Marathon Champion, 1992 Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist

Lorraine Moller

Pain free, healthy and sustainable physical activity is essential for what JFK described as “the vigorous life.” During the same era and born out of cardiac rehab, the Lydiard Principles became the foundation for modern elite running endurance training and, more importantly, introduced “jogging” to the world. The seminar will re-introduce the Lydiard Method and share the essentials to best help your customers meet their performance and fitness goals.

Connecting Communites, Customers and Categories Blaine and Robin Lewis

Presented by Blaine and Robin Lewis of Fleet Feet Roanoke, Moderated by Darren Brown, OOFOS Learn how to grow your business with add-on sales.

How Walking Across America Affected my Retail Sensibility Presented by Tom Griffen Darren Brown

Tom Griffen

In 2018, Tom walked across America. Wore out seven pairs of shoes and ate way too much pizza between Santa Monica, CA and Coney Island, NY. Covered 3410 miles in 205 days. Set out to achieve a personal goal, but quickly learned the walk wasn’t about him at all. It was more about the people he genuinely connected with along the way — a detail he couldn’t help but liken to what it means to be a good retailer.

Understanding Customers Better to Personalize Messaging and Marketing Presented by Dean Gill, Upper Quadrant

Dean Gill

As a passionate runner himself, there are few things Dean enjoys more than helping running stores grow their businesses, and he has always kept his philosophy simple: Listen to the client. While that may sound simplistic, Dean knows there is nothing more important than getting a feel for the cause of a specific challenge or issue. Dean helps companies combine their data to use it in new ways do drive business forward.

Modern Marketing for Races Presented by Tim and Jessica Murphy, BibRave

Tim and Jessica Murphy

Learn from top races — how they are cutting through the clutter and spending money in the most efficient ways.

RUNNING COMPANIES MAY LIE. RUNNING DOESN’T.

So many shoe companies. Dishing out so many marketing claims. It’s exhausting. But we don’t make promises, we make shoes. For runners. And runners need shoes that actually perform. Which is where our foam comes in. Don’t believe us? Try on a pair, and let the running do the selling.

THE BEST STORE INDIVIDUAL AWARDS The Ubuntu Award

Sound Mind, Sound Body

Presented by Balega Sports

Presented by ASICS

Awarded to a store that makes a tremendous difference in its community.

ASICS believes that the key to a healthy and happy lifestyle is through a sound mind in a sound body. ASICS is an acronym, Anima Sana In Corpore Sano — a sound mind in a sound body. The winner of the Sound Mind, Sound Body Award embodies these values on a daily basis in both their personal and professional life. In honor of ASICS’ founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, a donation of $1949 will be made to the winner’s charity of choice.

The culture of Balega draws its inspiration from the humanistic philosophy focusing on people’s allegiance and relationship to one another. It is the relationship to our communities that resonates with store owners every day in their home towns. Changing lives, helping to improve the lives of those living in our communities.

This individual always has a positive attitude, dedicated work ethic, and is a total team player — going the extra mile to help both customers and fellow staff. A cheerleader for their store and its culture, this individual inspires an active lifestyle and personifies what Run Happy means.

At Saucony, a good day is when we get to run; a great day is when we inspire others to run. And now, more than ever, that must include our kids.
