CONFERENCE PROGRAM
STRUCTURE & HULL
The best engineers, builders, and fixers all share a common belief: something good – and even something great – can always be better. This series brings that search for better solutions to the area of structure & hull maintenance. Learn strategies to optimize the quality of your welding, paint application, corrosion prevention, and more. Because there’s always room to improve.
STRUCTURE & HULL SESSIONS 9:45-10:30 | Custom Weld Techniques Learn how to increase efficiency and decrease downtime by using the latest custom weld techniques. Shipyard welding is a lot more challenging than other forms of industrial welding, but the newest innovations and techniques can help. Join top professionals from welding schools, manufacturers and shipyards as they discuss how to reduce time and money spent on welding procedures while increasing productivity and quality.
failure. These consensus-based industry standards support a vessel owner’s goal of obtaining or exceeding the expected service life of the protective coating. The discussion will walk the audience through a paint project, explaining which consensus-based standards should be specified and which testing practices should be followed at specific hold points during surface preparation, coating application and coating cure to assure a quality paint project. 2:00-2:45 | Understanding Corrosion
10:45-11:30 | Physical Asset Management Strategy According to an industry study, only 12 percent of equipment failures can be attributed to wear and tear and only 4 percent to age. The remaining 84 percent occur due to human-induced defects: the way assets are designed, installed, operated or maintained. This session will introduce a set of proactive reliability tools vessel operators can build into their physical asset management strategy to minimize human-induced defects and maximize reliability. Learn how preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance and precision maintenance can be leveraged for better performance and lower total costs. 1:00-1:45 | Quality Paint Applications through the Use of Standards This presentation will focus on how industry standards for surface preparation, coating application and quality control inspection can vastly improve quality while minimizing the risk of premature coating
On the topic of marine corrosion, professionals need to stay abreast of ever-evolving standards. In this session, we’ll discuss what those standards are while also reviewing the various types of corrosion, the causes of corrosion-related failure, and how to choose the right materials for marine environments. We’ll also discuss leading methods of protection against marine corrosion. 3:30-3:45 | Reducing the Cost of Maintenance & Repair through DFM Owners continue to face escalating costs of designing, building, operating and maintaining vessels over their full life cycles. And when maintenance budgets are reduced, owners can struggle to afford the inherent costs built in by designs that don’t consider how the ship will operate and be maintained over its lifetime. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) can reduce these costs. This presentation will showcase proven DFM methodologies and lessons learned and provide tools and templates that can be used to cultivate DFM thinking.

CONFERENCE PROGRAM
POWER & PROPULSION
The technology that powers America’s commercial fleets is changing faster than ever – presenting a unique challenge to the crews in charge of maintaining vessel motors and fuel systems. Join WorkBoat and the leaders in fuel and propulsion technology as we discuss the most effective ways to prevent equipment failure and maintain a reliable, high-powered, high-tech fleet.
POWER & PROPULSION SESSIONS 9:45-10:30 | Improve Your Bottom Line through Condition Monitoring Companies pour millions of dollars each year into vessel maintenance programs in hopes of preventing costly or catastrophic outages. Condition monitoring systems including vibration analysis and online monitoring can help control those costs. This introductory presentation will use real-world case studies from industries like oil & gas, where condition monitoring has been widely adopted, to demonstrate the latest methods, models, trends, and applications. 10:45-11:30 | Dual Fuel Systems According to a DNV forecast, roughly 50 percent of new OSVs built in 2020 will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), and even as soon as 2016, 10 percent of the world’s fleets will be outfitted for dual fuel consumption. This presentation will highlight ways to overcome the maintenance-related challenges unique to dual fuel vessels, including: the cost of outfitting a vessel for LNG-diesel operation (redundant systems with tankage and piping); design and planning for bunkering a cryogenic liquid for storage at -260°F; loss of cargo capacity below deck (LNG storage requirements can reduce a 300’ dual-fuel vessel’s below-deck capacity to that of a 250’ OSV), and more.

WorkBoat Maintenance & Repair 2015
1:00-1:45 | Vibration Monitoring This presentation will complement the Condition Monitoring session by exploring in greater detail how vibration monitoring can help lower your costs per maintenance hour and help prevent equipment failure. We’ll look at systems in general; specific products on the market; and how vessel operators are implementing the practice with success. 2:00-2:45 | Using Technology to Lower Maintenance Costs and Decrease Downtime and Costly Repairs Join as Leslie Bell from Caterpillar details how technology products and connected services can help marine customers to lower operation and maintenance costs, increase productivity, avoid downtime and costly repairs, adhere to increasing regulatory requirements, and work more safely and sustainably.
CONFERENCE PROGRAM
REGULATORY ISSUES
If there’s anything you can count on changing as quickly – and as disruptively – as technology, it’s government regulation. EPA Tier 4, Coast Guard SubChapter M, and other new industry rules mandate fundamental changes in vessel equipment and operations. Fortunately, there’s time to plan and prepare. These sessions were designed to bring you up to speed on the regulations you need to work with, and how to do so in a way that keeps your business moving full steam ahead.
REGULATORY SESSIONS 9:45-10:30 | New EPA Tier 4 Regulations
1:00-1:45 | SubChapter M and its Impact on Maintenance
EPA emissions standards vary by year and by level based on engine size and power, and everyone who works to maintain and repair a vessel needs to understand how they apply to their specific case. With Tier 3 coming online this year, it’s now time to prepare for Tier 4 standards. Join industry professionals as they explain the new requirements and the most efficient ways to comply.
The long-anticipated Subchapter M is almost here. When it’s finalized and rolled out by the Coast Guard, the rule promises to elevate safety in the inland barge industry by requiring a Towing Safety Management System (TSMS). The proposed TSMS requirements say, “Procedures must be in place to ensure safety of property, the environment and personnel.” But what procedures must be in place, and how will those who maintain the vessels meet the requirements? This session will seek to answer those questions.
10:45-11:30 | Ensuring Compliance in Spare Part Procurement Spare part procurement sounds easy: you need a part, and you order it. However, today’s increasingly complex and global supply chains present a number of potential issues. For example, if you don’t order directly from a manufacturer, how can you confirm you’re getting the right part? Can you trust the quality? Will the part arrive on time? Does it meet regulations? Attend this session to learn how spare part procurement methods can ensure you get the exact parts you need, when you need them, to keep your vessels in service and in compliance.
2:00-2:45 | Regulations on Lubrications There are many industry terms or names for EAL’s on the market today. Unfortunately these names are confusing to the consumer. Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants, Environmentally Friendly Lubricant and Environmentally Considerate Lubricants are all acceptable names. The key factor is the standards set by the EPA not the generic name. No matter what the name of the lubricant we are all trying to meet the same standards. The EPA has chosen Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants “EAL’s” as the term for the Vessel General Permit. There are pros and cons for each base oil technology. There are also maintenance related issues which are affected by the EPA VGP record keeping requirements in Section 4.2 of the Permit. This session will address some of the findings to ensure the proper materials are being used.
