Dear Division 23, I hope you all are enjoying your summer so far! I know that I certainly am having a great time. Your Kiwanis Clubs have said many great things about what you have been doing this summer. Don’t forget to keep up the good work! This is the edition of The Key of 23 where I get to tell you all of my ICON experience at the beginning of July. There are some pictures included here for it as well. Also, there are some messages from Executive Board members! As you all begin the school year yet again, do not forget about Key Club! There are so many great opportunities coming within the next year and many new experiences for you all to take advantage of! Please grow your clubs to the best of your ability; it is very important to Key Club as a whole, it will help you in the long run, trust me. Finally, please send in those Monthly Report Forms! March-July forms are due for most clubs, so please send those in! Let me know if you have any questions! Yours in friendship and service, Josh Hill Lt. Governor

Greeting from Josh

Governor’s Address Hello New York District Key Clubbers, This is Governor Daniel Ivan Lin and I hope you are all having an amazing summer. Just a few weeks ago, I had the honor of representing the New York District with more than fifty other Key Clubbers at this year’s International Convention. The experience was nothing short of great as we celebrated the merits of our organization and all that we have accomplished in a service year. With the election of our new international board, I would like to congratulate Jack Vielhauer in his election as international trustee. If you haven’t done so already, please subscribe to the district mailing list. You can do so through the district website. There’s more to come. Yours in the Spirit of Service, Daniel Ivan Lin District Governor daniellin.gov@nydkc.org

Secretary’s Memo Hey New York District Key Club, The New York District has just come back from having a great and memorable time in Orlando, Florida for the 2012 International Convention. It was not only a memorable experience, but also an acknowledging experience as I brought back so many wonderful ideas to share with all of you. I will soon be releasing a video on the ICON experience within next month. With that said, I have a few reminders for everyone, especially club secretaries. All election report forms are due on August 5th, 2012. Please speak to your Lieutenant Governor about this or contact me. Also, all monthly report forms are due the seventh of each month. Please do not forget to submit those; Key Club does continue during the summer. I have recently released a newsletter for secretaries, welcomed to be read by all Key Clubbers. It is called “The Secretarial Periodical” Please refer to this link: http://tinyurl.com/c2bhmbm. Secretaries should be on a lookout to be invited to a Google email group based on their election report form so if you don’t want to miss this out, don’t forget to submit them. Don’t forget to be on the lookout for new minutes and videos! Hope you are all having a wonderful summer. Yours in the spirit of purity and service, Amber Lee 1-347-653-3656 amberlee.sec@nydkc.org

Editor’s Post Hello New York District Key Clubbers, I am your District Editor Holy Cheong and I am thrilled to say this summer has hit off to a good start! Although I would like to be bombarded with emails of service spotlights and articles I am glad to say I received several for the summer issue of The Empire Key. Be prepared fellow Key Clubbers! This newsletter may knock you off your socks. Keep in mind that service spotlights are very important. They give key clubbers the chance to tell everyone what they have done to help their community and we want to acknowledge and thank them for their hard work. With that said, please send me service spotlights! Not only will they be published in the newsletter but they will also be posted on the District website. Yours in the Spirit of Service, District Bulletin Editor Holy Cheong holycheong.editor@nydkc.org

Service Spotlight: Webster-Schroeder & -Thomas On the night of the Fireman’s Parade for Webster, Webster Kiwanis and their SLP’s marched down Main Street to the Fireman’s Carnival to help spread the name of Kiwanis, K-Kids, Key Club and Builder’s Club within their community. During the two mile walk, the Key Clubbers held the banner at the front, KKids tossed candy to the crowd and Kiwanians rode in the truck waving to everyone as they passed by. It was very fun and a great time for the Kiwanis Family Branches to bond together. It has taken the two Key Clubs one step further to building better relations with their Kiwanis Club. It was a good time filled with laughter and smiles from all. The Kiwanis Club was very thankful everyone came out and the SLP’s were glad to be there.

Don’t forget to send in Service Spotlights to get yourself recognized for the great service your club does! Let Josh know if you have any problems or questions!

International Convention 2012 Key Club’s International Convention this year was held in Orlando, Florida, and it was hot and humid the whole time we were down there! But lucky, all the Key Clubbers there were able to beat the heat by staying indoors and attend one of the many workshops, dances or activities that the conference had to offer. International Convention (ICON) is a gathering of Key Clubbers from all over the world for a few days each year at a set location where they interact, grow as leaders and learn new service project ideas and share their own experiences with others. It truly is a magical experience! The New York District took a little “tour” before the start of convention around Disneyworld. And on July 4th at the Opening Session, the convention was well on its way! While there, I met so many amazing people and made memories that will stick with me for the rest of my life (you can check out some of those memories on the next page!) I attended many workshops and have learned many new leading techniques and new skills to bring to you all in your own clubs. I hope that next year, some of you may be able to join me as ICON 2013 will be in Washington, D.C.! Jack Vielhauer ’12-’13 International Trustee from New York New York District
