July DCM Hey, turtles! I am so excited to invite you to the July DCM, which will serve as a prep rally for Portland Area Rally. There, we will learn cheers and make signs to promote the turtle squad at PAR! Hope to see you there!

Sharing Our Story After retiring as a track coach in 1999, I decided to simply focus on teaching my classes at Mountain View High School. That was until a student asked if I would volunteer as the Key Club faculty advisor. I had never heard of Key Club, but agreeing to serve was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Cascade Park Kiwanis offered to pay my dues, so I simultaneously became a Kiwanian and a faculty advisor in 2000. As an English teacher, I found that guiding students in expressing their ideas through writing and in discovering literature which resonated with them were both incredibly rewarding. Many students joined Key Club initially because they knew it would look great on their resumes. Soon they discovered the intrinsic rewards of helping others, and they began to look at being in Key Club differently. Once any of view the world through the lens of how we can assist others, it changes us for life. Watching this paradigm shift truly was a highlight of my career as an educator. When I retired in 2008, I became secretary of my Kiwanis Club and still hold that position. In early 2009, I became the Key Club Area Administrator for Divisions 44 and 45. Working with several extraordinary young leaders like Lt. Governors Ishu Poudyal and Jinhee Kwak has been a truly positive experience. Visiting our thirteen local high schools and serving on the adult team of the District Board allow me to spend time with young adults who are truly making a positive impact on the world. I became a teacher because I love kids and hoped to someday help students in the same way my teachers helped me. Being partners in service with Key Clubbers and fellow Kiwanians really is a positive way to live. Watching Key Clubbers thrive as young adult leaders and still being part of their lives as they enter college, secure their first jobs, marry, and have children has been invaluable. The final benefit is what all Key Clubbers intuitively know--participating in diverse service projects and making friends of all ages is simply fun! Patty Downey Area Administrator and Kiwanian
