Solo ieri, ovvero nel 1957, Orazio Spada dà vita alle sue prime creazioni artigianali ottenute forgiando con abilità metalli grezzi. Lo slancio verso la ricerca ci porta nel tempo a focalizzarci sul design e a cercare l’equilibrio tra tecnica e qualità del prodotto. Si passa dal laboratorio all’azienda e nel 1977 nasce il marchio Metal Spot. Agli inizi degli anni 2000 esploriamo nuove potenzialità creative: nascono collezioni che sanno unire funzionalità a spiccato contenuto decorativo. Il 2008 apre un’ulteriore fase evolutiva: la inauguriamo con il marchio rinnovato e con l’idea di proiettarci verso una longevità che passi trasversalmente attraverso mode, gusti e generazioni. Per i prossimi 50 anni.

2000TT0 It seems yesterday, when in 1957, Orazio Spada gave birth to his first handmade creations, forging with great skill raw metals. The urge for a continuous research brought us with the passing of the years to a final focus on design and to a balance between technique and product quality. We have passed from being a simple laboratory to a company, and in 1977 we created the Metal Spot brand. At the beginning of the 21st century we started to explore new creative opportunities: new collections arrived, where functionality was perfectly blended with strong decorative features. 2008 opens a further evolution: restyling of the logo and with the idea of projecting ourselves towards a long life that may cut fashions, tastes and generations transversally. For the next 50 years.

DELIGHT La fusione tra design e luce per noi è diventata “DeLight” e l'abbiamo trasformata in un nuovo progetto con cui ci proponiamo di lanciare, da quest'anno e per gli anni a venire, una collaborazione strutturata con designers noti o emergenti. La sfida è di mettere assieme le loro idee e la nostra capacità realizzativa. Abbiamo l'ambizione di pensare che tutti i prodotti nuovi o semplicemente aggiornati che nasceranno nel cantiere “DeLight” si imporranno per la loro personalità. Ma sapranno anche dare piacere e arricchire la vita di coloro che li utilizzeranno.

The fusion between design and light has become for us "DeLight" and we turned it into a new project aiming to start, from this year on, a structured cooperation with famous and emerging designers. The challenge is to put their ideas and our manufacturing skills together. We have the ambition to think that all the products, new or simply restyled, that will come out from the "DeLight" workshop, will attract the attention thanks to their personality, bringing pleasure and enriching the life of the people who will use them as well.

PIERO CASTIGLIONI EMANUELA PULVIRENTI REFLEX non è stata tanto la ricerca dell’ennesimo vestito per un oggetto dal comportamento ampiamente collaudato, quanto il superamento dei suoi limiti. Con REFLEX orientiamo la luce non il proiettore, grazie ad un piccolo specchio quadrato, articolato all’interno di un telaio mobile. E riusciamo ad intervenire sulla luce, modificandola, esaltandola a piacimento: possiamo allargare, allungare o colorare il fascio spot. REFLEX si pone con una diversa funzionalità per un modello concettuale nuovo ed originale. Nella più pura tradizione Metal Spot. REFLEX is not the usual new jacket for a well known object, but rather the overcoming of its limits. With REFLEX you can position correctly the light not the floodlight. Thanks to its little square mirror positioned inside of its mobile frame. You can set the light, modifying it, according to your desires: you can widen it, make it longer or change the colour of the spot light. REFLEX offers a different functionality for a new and original conceptual model. But remaining in the purest Metal Spot tradition.

Low-tension floodlight available in the wall/ceiling, Shock system light source and tri-phase rail track light source versions. Painted aluminium body. Electronic ballast included. The pointing of the light is secured by a mirror placed in front of the lamp, inside a mobile frame. Keeping the lamp’s position fixed, either horizontal or parallel to the rail, the mirror still allows the reflection of the light in all directions. Avoiding, in this way, the messy look, created by traditional floodlights, when positioned all in different directions. Comfort and easy use are guaranteed by a spill-ring inside of the cylindrical body eliminating any danger of dazzling; mirrors help avoid touching high temperature parts, when positioning the light; mirror rotates 180° in order to see in real time both effects of lighting (spot/flood, horizontal beam/vertical beam) without having to mount and dismount filters, or replace the lamp, as with any other kind of floodlight.

Lo specchio consente di indirizzare la luce in qualsiasi direzione dello spazio mantenendo fissa la posizione dell’apparecchio, orizzontale e parallelo al binario, evitando, dunque, l’effetto di disordine creato dai normali proiettori posizionati sui binari con orientamenti tutti l’uno diverso dall’altro. Diversi accorgimenti assicurano il comfort e la semplicità di utilizzo: uno spill-ring interno al corpo cilindrico elimina la possibilità che il filamento della lampada possa abbagliare l’osservatore; l’orientabilità della luce attraverso lo specchio evita che l’utente venga in contatto con parti ad alta temperatura; la rotazione dello specchio di 180° consente di osservare immediatamente l’effetto opposto (spot/flood, fascio orizzontale/fascio verticale) senza dover montare e smontare filtri, o sostituire la lampada, come avviene per qualsiasi altro proiettore.

Il fascio spot che fuoriesce dalla lampada ad alogeni con riflettore dicroico non viene solo orientato dallo specchio ma anche modificato: può essere allargato attraverso lo specchio satinato, può essere allungato in senso orizzontale o verticale attraverso lo specchio rigato. Gli specchi, inoltre, sono bifacciali: quello standard ha un lato concentrante e uno diffondente mentre quello “da scultura” ha un lato che allunga il fascio in verticale e un lato che lo allarga in orizzontale. The spot light that comes out of the halogen lamps with dichroic reflectors is only directed by the mirror, it’s also modified by it. It can be widened with a satin-finish mirror or it can be made vertically or horizontally longer using a striped mirror. Furthermore, mirrors are double-face: the standard version has a spot side and a flood side, while the “sculpture” version has a side that stretches the light vertically and the other one that stretches it out horizontally.

EMANUELA PULVIRENTI Luce… che concetto indefinito! La luce, infatti, esiste sotto forma di una infinita varietà di espressioni. E diverse atmosfere di luce si possono sommare, unire, accoppiare, per esaltarne le rispettive specificità. Diverse ma pur sempre unite. La luce attorno alla luce... CIRCUM vuol dire proprio “attorno”, vuol dire che un anello che diffonde una morbida luce in tutto l’ambiente circonda un nucleo di luce stretta e concentrata da puntare come uno spot. Un nucleo con il suo anello che danzano nell’aria, che possono oscillare e ruotare reciprocamente, come un pianeta coi suoi anelli, come un atomo con le orbite dei suoi elettroni. Infatti in questa sospensione dalle forme concentriche e dai volumi piatti le inclinazioni del nucleo e dell’anello giocano un ruolo essenziale, che è funzionale ma anche estetico. Per degli effetti che riservano continue sorprese. Sarà per questo che il nome assomiglia molto anche a “circo”? Light…what a generic concept! Actually light exists under a great variety of expressions. You can sum, join, couple different atmospheres of light in order to exploit the peculiar characteristics of each one of them. Different but always linked together. Light around light….CIRCUM means “around”. A diffused light ring surrounds a heart made by a spot type light. A nucleus with its ring that dance together in the air, that can fluctuate and rotate reciprocally, just like a planet and its rings, or an atom and its electrons. In this suspension light made up by concentric shapes and flat volumes, the real protagonists are the endless different inclinations of the nucleus and of the rings. These inclinations have at the same time a functional and aesthetic reason why. For their continuously surprising effects. Maybe it’s for this reason that its name is so similar to the word “circus”?

LEO DE CARLO Gli oggetti che circondano la nostra vita sono spesso molto complicati. Le lampade non fanno eccezione: devono produrre luce, indirizzarla in maniera precisa, non abbagliare, disperdere calore, risultare sicure. Per questo si tende a costruirle in maniera macchinosa. COB cerca di risolvere questa complessità. Un solo guscio trasparente diventa protezione, riflettore, diffusore, bloccaggio, estetica. L’intelligenza della materia, mescolata all’immaginazione ci aiuta a cogliere il senso profondo degli oggetti. Most of the times, everyday objects are too complicated. Lamps are no exception: they must give light, direct it in a precise way, they most not dazzle, disperse heat, or be dangerous. For this reason they tend to turn out a bit complicated. COB tries to resolve this difficult situation. A one and only transparent shell serves as protection, spotlight, diffuser, blocking and aesthetics. To pick up your eyes and dream a bit. Only by exalting our imagination we can catch the real meaning of any object. This is what I tried to do, but I don’t know if I succeeded in my attempt…

ENRICO MARCHETTI Un modulo che si ripete, si aggiunge, si integra a piacimento. Un sistema che per la sua flessibilità aggiri gli ostacoli, superi i limiti in altezza ed estensione. Questo è stato il punto di partenza. E il traguardo è stato SLALOM, se posso dire di nome e di fatto. Nel nome evoca la sua forma dall’andamento sinuoso; nella sostanza è un sistema a bassa tensione che abbatte i paletti e libera la fantasia nel suo impiego. La prima configurazione è quella della tesata, che nasce assieme al “gemello diverso” della tenda, che è separazione, decorazione, innovazione. Le dimensioni della tesata sono modulabili in lunghezza con differenti integrazioni. E differenti sono anche le estetiche delle sorgenti: il sistema offre un vestito dallo stile classico (pirex), o casual (tegola in PC), o raffinato (decoro di Strass). Io ho previsto un tracciato: a voi di percorrerlo con la massima libertà. A module that repeats, and adds to itself, and that can be integrated as much as one likes. A system that can bypass any difficulty with its flexibility, that can overcome any limit of height and width. This was the starting point. The final goal was SLALOM, if I may say it, in name and in deed. Its name evokes its sinuous shape; in its essence it’s a low tension system that can be used freely. First there is a tightened cable configuration, together with its “other twin” tent, which represents separation, decoration, innovation. The length of the tightened cable is changeable with different possible integrations. You can also choose between different source aesthetics: the system offers a classic version (pyrex), a casual one (a PC tile), or a fashion one (decorated with Strass). I’ve marked a route: now it’s up to you to freely go after it.

ALESSANDRA GIPPONI Rimango sempre affascinata nel vedere realizzato qualcosa che inizialmente è un pensiero… La mia bacchetta magica è il segno grafico, che interpreta i miei pensieri e fissa il rincorrersi delle mie idee, trasformando il mio mondo astratto in un oggetto per tutti. ORIGAMI è un foglio che, con pieghe e tagli, crea pieni e vuoti che si inseguono fino a materializzare la terza dimensione, senza aggiungere o togliere la materia. Il movimento che governa di nascosto ogni materia e la flessuosità latente del metallo diventano lo spunto per plasmare una forma semplice e dare vita alla mia NASTRO. Infine OLIVIA che nasce dall’idea di illuminare con una forma pura, un oggetto che abbraccia la luce e la circonda, disegnando uno spazio luminoso. I’m always terribly fascinated to see an idea come true… My magic wand is my graphic line. It reads my thoughts and fixes down my fluctuating ideas, turning my abstract world into a tangible object that everybody can use. ORIGAMI is a piece of paper, that with cuts and folds, creates full and empty spaces that chase each other realizing a third dimension, without adding or removing material. Motion that secretly rules all materials, and the latent suppleness of metal, become the hint for creating NASTRO. At last, OLIVIA, coming from the idea of using a pure shape for lighting, an object that embraces light and surrounds it, thus designing a bright space.

SERGIO MENTI L’ispirazione spesso parte dai contrasti e tra i più suggestivi ci sono quelli che solo la luce sa creare. SOFFIO nasce da questi contrasti. Nelle geometrie, in cui un cerchio è iscritto in un quadrato; nei volumi in cui si alternano vuoti e pieni; nelle simmetrie in cui alto e basso, sinistra e destra idealmente si ribaltano. Tutto si genera da un unico elemento di alluminio, materiale docile e dolce, che sviluppa linee, forme e, appunto, contrasti. Come animato da un soffio che lo riempie e arrotonda. Forse SOFFIO combina sapientemente estetica e funzionalità, forse gioca un ruolo che si spinge oltre la funzionalità, con la sua alternanza di luce e di ombra. Sicuramente questo è l’effetto che mi proponevo di ottenere: l’illuminazione che diventa atmosfera. Contrasts frequently generates inspiration, and light can create some of the most evocative ones. SOFFIO is born from these contrasts. Geometrical arrangements of circles and squares; volumes that alternate empty and solid spaces; a symmetric layout where up and down, left and right ideally take each others place. An aluminium element generates it all. It’s a malleable and tender material, that can create lines, shapes and as I said before, contrasts, as if animated by a filling and rounding breath. SOFFIO may skilfully combine aesthetics with functionality, or perhaps with its alternation of shadows and light, it may even go beyond mere functionality. This was exactly my intent: a lighting that becomes atmosphere.

ORAZIO SPADA Le idee non hanno peso. Sono leggere e volatili. Sanno però produrre risultati ed effetti anche molto consistenti, come dimensioni, volumi o pesi. Nella mia vita professionale so bene cosa significa dare concretezza alle proprie creazioni visto che sono partito, ormai cinquant’anni fa, da un laboratorio artigianale nel cuore di Milano in cui venivano forgiati metalli grezzi. L’effervescenza di CRISTAL è un po’ il simbolo dell’ebollizione delle idee. E anche della loro leggerezza. Le sfere trasparenti si inseguono ed evaporano quando scocca la scintilla della luce. ZERO invece è inconsistente nel nome ma non certo nella forma. Oggi si arricchisce di una versione ancora più imponente e spettacolare. Con la possibilità in più che il gioco delle piccole fonti luminose si moltiplichi grazie agli inserti di Strass. La leggerezza delle idee è un vantaggio. A distanza di tanti e tanti anni dagli inizi e delle tante e tante idee realizzate, il peso non lo sento per niente.

Ideas have no weight. They are light and volatile. But they can give tangible effects, such as dimension, volumes or weight. In my professional life I know exactly what this means, since I started off fifty years ago, in a small laboratory in the heart of Milan where raw metals where forged. The effervescence of CRISTAL is the symbol of these restless ideas and also of their lightness. Transparent globes chase each other around evaporating when a sparkle of light strikes out. ZERO has a very inconsistent name but a great consistency in its shape. Today’s new version is even more grand and spectacular. Strass inserts multiply the effects coming from small light sources, creating endless opportunities. The lightness of the ideas is a real advantage. After so many years and so many accomplished ideas, they still don’t weigh on me.

Cosa si può fare di tanti archetti di metallo? Li posso mettere uno accanto all’altro… due, tre, quattro… Aspetta che guardo attraverso… Sembra un casco, un elmo… Me li metto sulla testa, davanti agli occhi… Me li metto sulla zucca… Una ZUCCA! Tanti archetti di metallo che formano un struttura tonda, uguale a una zucca, illuminata da tante luci puntiformi all’interno … i suoi semi! Una lampada molto leggera, ma dalla forma corposa e tonda. Interessante! Un’unione di stile tra uno chandelier e una lampada tradizionale giapponese. What can you do with a metal arch. You can turn it up like two arms, you can turn it upside down like a tunnel… And what can you do with lots of little metal arches? You can put them one in a row…one, two, three, four….wait a second, I can give a look through it, it looks like an helmet or even an elm… I’ll put it on my head, in front of my eyes… but wait it looks like a PUMPKIN! Lots of little arches create a round shape very similar to a pumpkin, with lots of small dot lights inside it… just like seeds! A very light, fitting, but with a round and solid shape. Very interesting! The perfect union between a chandelier and a traditional Japanese lamp.

MARCO SPADA Amo le forme pulite, semplici ma decise. Linee che determinano e fissano lo spazio e ciò che contengono: il quadrato rappresenta per me la sintesi di questi concetti. Così è nata la serie QUADRO: un insieme di prodotti che coniugano il rigore di una forma essenziale in concetti differenti tra loro per finitura, caratteristiche tecniche e possibilità di utilizzo. In fondo le cose semplici sono quelle che durano per sempre. Un piccolo segreto: l’ho vissuto sulla mia pelle. I love clean, simple but strong shapes. Lines that determine and bind space and its content. In my opinion, the best way of synthesizing this concept is using a square shape. This is how the series QUADRO was born. A group of products that combine the severity of an essential shape with different finishings, technical characteristics and use, transforming each object in a different concept. Simple things are the ones that last the most. A little secret that I’ve learned by experience.
