Organization in relation to the Street Sumatraplantsoen Playground

Jacob Thijsseplein Playground

Dijkstraat Playground

Adventure Playground

Axis of the playground aligns with the street and all sides of the playground touch the street

All sides of the playground touch the street

One side of the playground touches the street

Axis of the playground aligns with the street

All playgrounds try to establish a relationship with the street my maximizing the contact area with the street or by aligning one or more sides with the steet to enhance visibility and accessibility. The elements within the playgrounds try to move away from the points of contact with the street to address safety issues.

If the context is a void, then the playground offers mass and if the context has mass the playground offers a void. The playgrounds always try and provide contrast to their surroundings context via massing.

Same space for active and passive users

Programme differentiates the active and passive users In this case the active users are the ones who engage with the equipment and the passive users are the observers or the passers by.

Around a linear axis

Follows Flooring & Shade

Determined by placement of mass

Along a linear axis and periphery

There are two types of circulation-one by active users and one via passive users While the passive users meander around play elements or take the shortest path the circulation of passive users is directed towards play elements Shade, Flooring and Volumetric mass become determinants of circulation

Part to Whole Sumatraplantsoen Playground

Jacob Thijsseplein Playground

The play elements act like the parts. It is the plinth that binds them together

The play elements and their segregated flooring act like the parts. It is the plinth that binds them together.

The play elements act like the parts. It is the plinth that binds them together

The play elements act like the parts. The plaza thus created by them and the external boundary act as the whole

Although each element in a playground can co-exist on its own, the relationship between those elements only comes into play when there is a binding element present which brings the elements together. This binding element makes the experience of the whole greater than its sum of parts. In most cases the binding element is the plinth or the barrier.

Repetition of Circles

The repetition in geometry reinforces the idea of the whole, bringing the playground together. One can feel a rhythm because of the repetition in geometry while navigating through the playground.

Squares (a) The repetition of the square geometry 16 times makes up the length of the playground (b) The trees present divide the playground into equal parts. Further centres of each of the elements coincides with the center of trees/ midpoint of the distances between two trees.

Dijkstraat Playground

Adventure Playground

Triangle The line passing centres of the circles on one side and the vault and handlebars on the other side meet at a point that passes through the center of the triangular sandbox

Circles (a) The centres of the circles that constitute the boundary lie along the axis of the channel (b) The coming together of smaller circles constitues the periphery

7x 2x 2x 5x

Circles (a) The placement of trees creates a grid. The circles lie on the projections of that grid (b) The dimension of one of the circles comes from inscription in the grid. The differences in dimensions of circles is relative to one another by a multiple of x
