Foothills Golf Course is one of the Denver Metro Area’s most popular public courses. However, the original clubhouse, built in 1974, was no longer serving the needs of daily golfers and the nearby community. In turn, the Park & Recreation team sought a new design with an expanded restaurant and terrace (including an indoor-outdoor bar), events space to accommodate various tournaments, and storage for a new fleet of golf carts.

The Colorado Golf Expo, presented by BMW Championship, will be held Friday through Sunday, February 16-18, at the Colorado Convention Center, Hall C. Kevin Morton, Owner of the Colorado Golf Expo, says “This year’s Expo is better than ever with exciting new features for golf enthusiasts and professionals alike.” Highlighted this year is a 90-foot-long putt challenge, where participants of all skill levels can compete for prizes. With over a hundred exhibitors, this celebration of golf offers attendees opportunities to discover the latest products and services in the golf industry, from equipment and apparel to training and technology. Key partners include Lenny’s Golf, PGA-Colorado Section, Colorado Golf Association, and over a dozen manufacturers. “To add to the excitement,” says Kevin, “we are proud to announce that Ryan French will speak on the PGA Seminar Stage.” Ryan, founder of Monday Q, a golf media company with over 41 million monthly views, will share insights on upand-coming pros and underdogs, as well as relate Cinderella stories. Since it is important to give back to the community, the Colorado Golf Expo will partner with Ryan French and donate golf clubs to a local high school golf team in need of equipment. This contribution will be presented by legendary sports broadcaster Vic Lombardi on Saturday the 17th at 11:00 a.m. “Plus,” continues Kevin, “this year’s Expo will feature performances by rock/country musician Kimberley Dahme.” Kimberley is a singer-songwriter best

known as a former member of Boston, a rock band. Since there will be live music throughout the event, attendees can enjoy a variety of musical genres while exploring the exhibit hall and networking with other golf enthusiasts.

Getting There... Known for the big blue bear statue in front of it, the Colorado Convention Center, is located at 700 14th St.—between Stout and California streets in Denver’s Theatre District. It is accessible by RTD Light Rail and car.

RTD Light Rail Avoid parking altogether! Denver’s light rails D, F and H lines all stop at the Colorado Convention Center, although the F line remained suspended (as of Jan. 14) due to COVID-19 restrictions. Visit www.rtd-denver.com/app/plan to chart the easiest way to get to the Expo. Make sure to wear a mask on all RTD transportation!

BY CAR The Colorado Convention Center does not offer free parking, but does have a parking garage located at 1104 Champa Street. Up to eight hours costs $12. The garage features 665 spaces. The Expo averages roughly 3,000 attendees daily. There are other lots in the area, and street parking is available but limited to two hours. 8

Let's take a realistic look at both sides to determine if living on a golf course is right for you:

Advantages There are many great advantages to living on a golf course. Golf course living offers a lifestyle that isn’t found anywhere else, and it could be a perfect fit for your lifestyle: Recreation at Your Fingertips Every course offering is different, but many offer benefits like clubhouses, saunas, gyms, swimming pools, tennis courts and regular community social events. Plus, you can often go tee off at just about any time you choose. Improve Your Game Living on a golf course means that you can play any time you want and improve your game. Professionals recommend that a beginner golfer play at least twice a week to see improvement in their game.

Stay Active In the Denver Metro Area, many courses offer nearby access to trails for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, running, birdwatching and picnics. Sometimes, communities have complimentary membership agreements with other facilities, as a bonus. Safe Community Living Some golf communities have gate guards and surveillance equipment. This will give you peace of mind and assurance that you and your property are well looked after. Network and Make New Friends Many golfers prefer, and tend to spend time, with other golfers because they enjoy the same passion for the game. Disadvantages Golf course living comes with endless benefits but it’s also important to be realistic about potential disadvantages of being part of a golf course community. Knowing about these issues in advance helps you decide if it’s a good community choice for you: Noise Maintenance, like mowing or sprinklers, is an inevitable part of golf course living. You might also hear golf carts and groups of golfers walking past and chattering loudly. However, noise issues could exist in any neighborhood. Did you get a new putter for Christmas? Good for you! Did you get a gift card to pick one out? Double good for you! Many of those precious flat sticks are truly gorgeous from the paint fill to the red dots to the headcover. They all claim to be better than the array of others. They’re incredibly striking and attractive until you look at the price tag. HOLY UNDERWEAR! Some of them are a house payment! You may have to consider taking out a 2nd mortgage to afford one. OUCH!

Without the opportunity to see this firsthand makes it hard to understand. Having the equipment to see the actions of the ball upon impact is crucial to putter fitting.

Destination unknown... The sun rises on a new golf season in Colorado!

With a few days of pre-holiday rounds of golf played in December 2023, Fossil Trace Golf Club wrapped up its 20th season of golf. For 2024 and beyond, the golf course continues to offer something for everyone that either lives in or travels to the historic city of Golden. The golf course is one of the many options in this region for award-winning local recreation, a mix of western roots, mining spirit and prehistoric remnants. It is those remnants of plant and animal life that inhabited this area 65 million year ago that gave them the namesake. The famed triceratops footprint, which was discovered up the path from the 12th green was moved recently to the Golden History Museum, where it is now on display for visitors and safe from the weather elements. Teri, a replica triceratops skull which can be viewed inside the Clubhouse, was the inspiration for the club’s popular new alternate logo introduced as part of the 20 year celebration. Fossil Trace is situated at the base of the foothills of the Front Range, surrounded by Lookout Mountain to the west, and Table Mountain to the north. Built on the unique topography of the Foothills, Jim Engh’s clear design intentions were to inspire the 24

imagination, and encourage players to have fun in a soulful and vibrant atmosphere. The course features a variety of amenities including an award-winning Golf Shop and restaurant, Footprints at Fossil Trace. In 2023, Fossil Trace was featured by a prominent national golf publication as one of the “Most Fun Golf Courses in America,” highlighting the golf course layout alongside the preservation of natural features and materials like clay, and brick. The clay featured throughout the back 9 draws inspiration from the natural beauty and history of the site. The often photographed chimney in the lower fairway of #1 is scheduled for renovation in early 2024. Many Denver-area and mountain golf courses are now top destinations for those traveling to Colorado. Groups of players are setting their sights on Denver, and making travel plans and tee times further in advance than ever before. Golf in Colorado is set against a backdrop not easily found anywhere else in the world. Fifteen Golf Challenges For You To Try In 2024 By Kieran Clark DIVOT Contributing Writer The Christmas tree is little more than a distant memory, the chime of the New Year bells faded long ago, all of which means that we have now embraced 2024 and both the challenges and opportunities that it will bring. For golfers, the beginning of each season can be an effective reset button, where you establish goals for the months to come alongside hopes and dreams for what you can derive from the game. Many of you are likely working away at the range or keeping yourself ticking over with routine winter rounds, but once springtime makes a welcome appearance, the excitement will be palpable. But what should you desire to achieve this year? Here’s a few objectives for you to give a try - some of which are more testing than others, but I’m pretty sure that conquering a few of them would qualify the 2024 golf season as being a resounding success.

Shoot Your Lowest Ever Score Thousands of you keep track of your score, but what is your lowest ever score? Whatever that may be, try and better it this year. I know realize this sounds like an obvious golf goal, but really attempt tomake this your year to post your lowest score ever!

Improve Your Stats If you are one to keep a record of your statistics round-by-round, season-by-season. Take a look at them - set a few benchmarks - and aim to improve on them this year. Whether you want to enhance a strength or defeat a weakness, hit more fairways and greens and hole more putts!

Play More Rounds Than 2023

This is (hopefully) the simplest one to have on your list. However many rounds

you're not making catastrophic errors on the golf course. Have a new box of Titleist Pro V1s or Callaway Chrome Softs? Let's see how many rounds you can get by without losing one! If you manage to get through multiple days, then we reckon that is probably a sign that you've played solid, consistent golf.

Play 18 Holes Without a Three-Putt Arguably the most frustrating way to lose strokes is on the greens, especially when you three-putt from a relatively modest distance. Work on your pace control and line reading and set yourself a target of getting through your round with no worse than a two-putt. If you manage to accomplish that, then you'll save yourself plenty of squandered shots on the card!

Take on a Longest Day Challenge Looking forward to June, the longest day of this year will technically be on the 20th of that month, but anything in the vicinity is relevant for this discussion. You often see golfers taking on challenges to play 72 holes a day - regularly for charity - but how bout you have a go at one yourself. Play at your pace, even if it's just two rounds, and make the absolute most of the long summer daylight!

All golfers love to improve. The acid test is whether your handicap is lower than it was at the beginning of the season. Become more consistent, shoot better rounds, and maybe even finally accomplish that one-established handicap goal. If you've always wanted to reach single figures - then make this the year!

Play With Only a Handful of Clubs Likewise, another thing worth trying is playing with a reduced number of clubs. This could be in competition, a fun match with friends, or even just on your own. Using fewer clubs will enhance your imagination and shot-making skills. Channel your inner-Lee Trevino or Seve Ballesteros and just see what happens!

How many different golf courses did you play in 2023? Whatever the number, endeavor to play more! You could return to old favorites or even - most excitingly - check off some new ones.
