Urban area Peri-urban area Rural area
We chose Nansha as an exemplary area for strategy building because saw it had several potentialities for development thanks to the bridge that is being constructed and new opportunities created with it.
We could consider Nansha as “tabula rasa” where everything can happen. We chose it to show how evolutionary resilience could be built, how to smartly develop the area considering the challenges and the mistakes that were made for instance in Shenzhen. We want it to become an example for other areas.
We identified three characters of the area: urban, peri-urban and rural to better address the challenges and propose more accurate strategies. The main issue which urban area faces is flooding and lack of green spaces, which is why we built strategies around these problems. The peri-urban area is threatened by urban sprawl and loss of identity. Here, we preserve the existing fish ponds and propose regeneration and restructuring of the three olds. In the rural area, on the other hand, we propose development next to the main infrastructure axes preserving the existing agricultural land and fish ponds. Some of the farmlands would be transformed into parks to improve the quality of living in the new settlements.
