about
“Architecture, and design in general, has always fascinated me. I perceive architecture as the ‘sangam’ of technology, art, science and the most fundamental aspect - empathy and human understanding. In this journey, I am trying to explore and understand all these various aspects and how to bring them together to create something that will do good for the world around me.”

PERSONAL ENCLOSURE DESIGN DESIGN STUDIO EXERCISE (2ND SEMESTER) THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A PERSONAL ENCLOSURE IN AN AREA OF 30 SQ.M. THAT REFLECTED OUR PERSONALITY.
Movement
Form Evolution AS IS VISIBLE IN THE FORM EVOLUTION, I HAVE TRIED TO SPREAD THE SPACES OUT FIRST IN THE HORIZONTAL PLANE AND THEN IN THE VERTICAL PLANE, IN ORDER TO HIGHLIGHT THE ‘EXPLORATIVE’ ASPECT OF MY PERSONALITY. ALSO, I HAVE TRIED TO CREATE MINIMAL, COZY ATMOSPHERE INDOORS.

RESIDENCE DESIGN DESIGN STUDIO EXERCISE (3RD SEMESTER)
THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A RESIDENCE CUM HOMESTAY IN A GIVEN SITE IN ROORKEE, UTTARAKHAND.
THE REQUIREMENTS IN TERMS OF ROOMS, NUMBER AND AREAS WERE PROVIDED FOR A GENERAL IDEA.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
FIRST FLOOR PLAN
SPACE DISTRIBUTION
THE SEGREGATION BETWEEN PRIVATE AND GUEST SPACES WAS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE, BUT, STILL CREATING A COHESION OF SPACES USING COMMON DINING AREA, AND CONNECTING WITH SEMI-COVERED WALKWAYS.
SITE PLAN
EFFORT TO CREATE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE INTERIOR AND THE EXTERIOR, HENCE, CREATING A COURTYARD-LIKE SPACE ACCESSIBLE FROM VARIOUS PARTS OF THE HOME. USE OF GLASS FACADE TO ADMIT NATURAL LIGHTING AND REDUCE ARTIFICAL LIGHTING LOAD IN THE COMMON AREAS.
SUSTAINABLE TOWNSHIP DESIGN DESIGN STUDIO EXERCISE (5TH SEMESTER)
THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A SUSTAINABLE TOWNSHIP IN ONE OF THE WARDS (WARD NO. 19) OF RANCHI, JHARKHAND. THE PROBLEM ALSO INCLUDED THE DESIGN OF ANY THREE HOUSING TYPOLOGIES TO BE USED IN THE TOWNSHIP WHICH, IN OUR CASE, WERE : ROW HOUSING FOR MIG, HIGH-RISE APARTMENTS (HIG+MIG) AND DETACHED HOUSING (HIG). THE DESIGN WAS DONE IN A GROUP OF 5 STUDENTS.
HOUSING TYPOLOGIES
MIG (SEMI-DETACHED ROW HOUSING)
THE DESIGN WAS BASED ON THE STANDARDS AND TWO FLOORS WERE DEVELOPED HAVING 1 MASTER BEDROOM WITH ATTACHED TOILET AND A BEDROOM, A KITCHEN,DINING AREA COMBINED WITH LIVING AREA, INNER COURTYARD WHICH IS USED FOR PERFORMING RITUALS AND AS A REFRESHING SPACE.
A BASIC RECTANGULAR MODULAR BLOCK WAS CREATED. ON THIS PLOT, AN L-SHAPED PLAN WAS WORKED UPON. THIS ALLOWED US IN GIVING A PERSONAL SEMI-COVERED COURTYARD TO EVERYONE. THE PLAN FOR THE NEXT HOUSE WAS FLIPPED ALONG THE LONGER SIDE OF THE RECTANGLE GIVING A SHARED COMMON WALL AND A GOOD AESTHETIC FORM OF THE COUPLED MODULAR UNIT.
HOUSING TYPOLOGIES
HIG (HIGH-DENSITY APARTMENTS)
INITIALLY A SINGLE UNIT OF RESIDENCE WAS DESIGNED. FOR HIG GROUP OF PEOPLE 3BHK FLATS WERE THOUGHT AND FOR MIG 2BHK FLATS. VENTILATION, LIGHTING AND CIRCULATION WERE THE THREE FEATURES THAT WERE LOOKED UPON CLOSELY.
THE UNIT THAT CAME AS A PRODUCT WAS ALSO VERY SIMPLE AND INTEGRABLE. IN THE UNIT WE COULD REMOVE ANY BEDROOM TO MAKE IT AN MIG GROUP HOUSE. THIS MADE THE NEXT PART OF DESIGN, THE CIRCULATION OF THE BUILDING AND ARRANGEMENT OF DIFFERENT UNITS WITHIN THE BUILDING CONVENIENT AS WELL AS INTERESTING.
THERE WERE 2 MIG AND HIG HOUSES ON EACH FLOOR WITH A COURTYARD COMING IN BETWEEN 2 BUILDINGS. THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNED FOR 10 (G+9) STOREYS SO THAT THE COURTYARD THAT IS FORMED BY THE NEGATIVE SPACE OF TWO BUILDINGS GELS WITH THE BUILDING IN SENSE OF PROPORTION.
HOUSING TYPOLOGIES
HIG (DETACHED HOUSING)
DETACHED HOUSE WAS DEVELOPED BASED ON THE STANDARD FOR HIG USERS WITH A MODULE OF ATLEAST 120 SQMT OF CARPET AREA DIVIDED INTO 1 MASTER BEDROOM WITH MASTER TOILET ATTACHED,2 BEDROOMS AND 2 TOILETS,AND A LIVING AREA,STORAGE SPACE,KITCHEN AND A CAR PARKING. THE REFERENCE BOOK SHOWED THE DENSITY OF 6 UNITS PER ACRE OF LAND AND HENCE DENSITY WAS NOT AN ISSUE AND SO TRADITION AND FORM WERE GIVEN THE PRIME FOCUS WHILE DESIGNING IT.
MASTER PLAN DEVELOPMENT THE SITE PROVIDED WAS IN RANCHI, JHARKHAND. 6 DIFFERENT WARDS WERE IDENTIFIED TO BE REDESIGNED, OUT OF WHICH, OUR GROUP WAS GIVEN WARD NO. 19. A COMMON ROAD NETWORK WAS ALSO DESIGNED AND THE CHALLENGE WAS TO PRESERVE THE EXISTING UNKNOWN BUILT FORM AND ACCENTUATE AND HIGHLIGHT THE PRESENCE OF THE SACRED GROVES WHILE MAKING IT ACCESSIBLE AND OF IMPORTANCE TO THE LOCAL BUILT ECOSYSTEM.
OUR MAIN IDEA THROUGHOUT THE CONCEPT WAS TO ACCENTUATE THE PRESENCE OF THE SACRED GROVES, IT BEING AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE LOCAL CULTURE. HENCE, WE TRIED TO REFLECT THAT IN OUR PLANNING BY PROVIDING THE ROAD HIERARCHY RADIALLY WITH THE FOCUS BEING THE SACRED GROVES. WE ALSO PROVIDED THE LOCAL AMENITIES AS PER THE URDPFI GUIDELINES, ENCOMPASSING THE VARIOUS NEEDS OF THE RESIDENTS. OUR PRIMARY FOCUS WAS ALWAYS KEEPING THE NEEDS AND COMFORT OF THE RESIDENTS IN MIND, HENCE, WE ALSO CREATED PEDESTRAIN PATHS FOR EASY ACCESSIBILITY WITHIN THE SITE.
RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL RECREATIONAL AND OPEN SPACES GREEN SPACES
WE PLACED THE HOUSING CLUSTERS AS SUCH, SO AS TO PROVIDE A HEIGHT GRADIENT IN THE SITE AGAIN, WHICH PROVIDES TWO BENEFITS: A) ACCENTUATES THE PRESENCE OF THE SACRED GROVES IN ELEVATION B) PROVIDES VISUALS OF THE GREEN AREAS TO ALL THE RESIDENTS.
BUS STATION DESIGN DESIGN STUDIO EXERCISE (6TH SEMESTER)
WE HAVE TRIED TO SEGREGATE THE MOVEMENT OF ALL MEDIA OF TRANSPORTATION - BUSES, 4-WHEELERS AND 2-WHEELERS, AND PEDESTRIANS. THERE WAS AN ABUNDANCE OF TREES ON THE SITE, WHICH WE HAVE MANAGED TO PRESERVE AND HENCE, CREATED SOME INTERESTING INTERPLAY OF “NATURAL” AND “MAN-MADE” SPACES. THE DESIGN WAS DONE IN A GROUP OF 2.

G-SEN TROPHY 2019 THE BRIEF WAS TO CHOOSE AN ALREADY EXISTING URBAN CENTER OF INDIA (OUT OF 53) AND SUGGEST DESIGN INTERVENTIONS TO MAKE IT ‘HYPER-RESILIENT’ IN FACE OF A FICTIONAL DISASTER THAT WOULD LEAD TO A MASS INFLUX INTO THE CITY. (WOEKED IN A TEAM OF 5)
NUCLEAR DISASTER THE STORY
G-SEN TROPHY 2019
The scene is set in the 2030’s where the world has shifted from using renewable sources of energy like WIND, THERMAL AND NUCLEAR ENERGY. One such facility has been set up near the town of Vyara, which is about 80 kilometres from the city of Surat. Population affected = 51,000(approx.) as per the census 2011.
HYPOTHETICAL LEAKAGE IN REACTOR’S COOLANTS One evening, alarms in the reactor go off suggesting a malfunction in one phase of the fusion units. Trying to cater to the problem, engineers and safety consultants led the investigations in what the problem was and how it could be solved. Investigations showed that the alarms were triggered due to the leakage of the coolant in the premises that held the radioactive material. An imminent danger, people within a radius of 10 kilometres (basically adjoining areas) were asked to relocate by the Government of Gujarat to Surat, which is about 80 kilometres from the reactor. Thus it brings us to our choice of selection of Surat being a hyper-resilient city in the future.
W H O W IL L B E AF F E CT E D ? Effect On Society Effects of long, but low-intensity exposures include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of hair, bruises due to subcutaneous bleeding. Long-term exposure or exposure to high amounts of radiation can have far more serious health effects. Radioactive rays can cause irreparable damage to DNA molecules and can lead to a life-threatening
W H Y SU R AT ? Every town and village in the 30-40 km radius is uninhabitable and the closest safe urban agglomeration which can sustain the incoming population is Surat approximately 70 km away.

Effect On WIldlife When soil is contaminated by radioactive substances, the harmful substances are transferred into the plants growing on it. It leads to genetic mutation and affects the plant's normal functioning. Both terrestrial and aquatic radioactive contamination can culminate in human consumption, the process being termed as Eutrophication. Economy Crisis Drinking water costs Nitrate-removal systems costs from 5-10 cents per 1000 gallons to over $4 per 1000 gallons. It can also cost billions of dollars to clean up polluted water bodies. Every dollar spent on protecting sources of drinking water saves in water treatment costs.

Surat was the world's 4th-fastest growing city in 2016 according to a study conducted by the City Mayors Foundation with an annualised GDP growth rate of 11.5% over the seven fiscal years between 2001 and 2008.. Surat was awarded "best city" by the Annual Survey of India's City-Systems (ASICS) in 2013.
NUCLEAR DISASTER ANALYSIS OF CHOOSEN CITY
Surat is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It used to be a large seaport and is now a center for diamond cutting and polishing. It is the eighth largest city and ninth largest urban agglomeration in India.
ECONOMY Surat ranked 10th in India with a GDP of 2.60 lakh crore in fiscal year 2016 ($14 billion in 2010). Surat GDP in 2020 will be around $57 billion estimated by The City Mayors Foundation, an international think tank on urban affairs. The economy of Surat is

DESIGN
“ Our design philosophy captures the spirit of resilience in a city, the same being incorporated into our DNA, right from the evolutionary stage. “
The core of the Octagonal like cluster sees amenities like that of Administrative Zone (Police facilities, etc), a centralised Storage, Water And Electricity Sub-stations that allow for the genesis of a society.
PHASE 1 PHASE 2 PHASE 3 G R E E N B E LT CONTROL CORE
BLOCKS AVAILABLE FOR ACCOMODATING MIGRATED PEOPLE
INSTITUTIONAL CORE
Institutionalized Radial Planning Radial planning has been adopted with its core containing Institutional Framework of the Block
PHASE 1 includes GENERIC MODULAR HOUSES made out of GFRG panels that are procured from manufacturers in Surat itself. Bifurcated into various zones via arterial roads, PHASE 2 caters to the needs of recreational and commercial demands that are instilled within a societal construct. PHASE 3 instills within the design, parameters that are ESSENTIAL BUT NOT CRITICAL like that of Industries and other employment generating opportunities.
When viewed superficially, the entire layout of the city resembles that of the model proposed by the sociologist Ernest Burgess. Our design consisits of 2 types of building units: 1.) One BHK (Single-Storeyed Dwellings) 2.) Two BHK (Multi-Storeyed Dwellings) This is entirely dependent upon the number of members in the family and their economic status. Open spaces are provided so that the resident does not feel claustrophobic and ensures sufficient sunlight within the interiors. BASIC REPETITIVE MODULAR UNIT
Individuality of spaces is upheld due to the symmety attained by the alterante built and open spaces within the basic module. A simultaneous sense of openness along with that of privacy is inculcated within the design, keeping in mind the sociological needs of the influx of people admitted into Surat. Expansion can be done VERTICALLY and is inspired by the design of the Pritzer prize winner, Alejandro Aravena. It provides an employment opportunity for the newly admitted immigrants who are in search of a trivial job opportunity.
G-SEN TROPHY 2019 The fundamental approach to the hyper resilience apart from the technical aspects of functionality, health-care, etc is a much more humane trait of empathy. Understanding and catering to the psychological as well as the sociological demands of the inux of a diverse group of people is of utmost importance and should not be neglected. GRIHA TROPHY 2018 THE BRIEF WAS TO DESIGN A GREEN OFFICE BUILDING, A MULTIPURPOSE COMPLEX AND BANQUET HALL IN A GIVEN SITE IN GURUGRAM, INDIA AS PER GRIHA GUIDELINES.. (WORKED IN A TEAM OF 5)
The design approach is based on the c2c principle- cradle to cradle - which play on the phrase "cradle to grave", implying that the c2c model is sustainable and considerate of life and future generations. Emphasis is laid on sustainability, views to every single individual workplace, maximum daylight , lower solar heat gains, natural ventilation, & comfortable working environment.

PRECAST CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY
INDIAN STONE FLOORING
Precast Concrete Technology is a process through which concrete is cast into a reusable mold, cured in controlled environment, then transported to the construction site by suitable arrangement (i.e. on tailors, long trucks) and hoisted and assembled into a complete structure. Precast technology is going to be used in making stucture of the building rather making it with conventional RC Frame structure.
Durability Of Stone: Quite high as it is made from hard rocks of mountains. Unique Pieces: Because sandstone is formed from nature itself the colors, patterns, and hues found in any individual piece are completely unique and different. Textures: sandstone comes from the mountain naturally craggy and jagged. Natural and Eco-Friendly: Because sandstone flooring is a product of the earth, it is all natural, and biodegradable. Qualities: Advantage of easy handling and availability with resistance to abrasion, environmental weathering, acid and alkali. Examples: Dholpur Beige & Agra Red from Karauli district, Rajasthan ha an Jodhpur Red from Jodhpur district Rajasthan Teak Wood from Nagaur District Rajasthan
ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL RC FRAME STRUCTURE:
FLY ASH BRICKS
ETFE( ETHYLENE TETRAFLUORO ETHYLENE )
Fly Ash Bricks is a building material espicially masonry units. Main ingridients of these bricks are fly ash, water, quick lime or lime sludge, cement, aluminium powder and gypsum. Infill walls and partition walls are to be made from fly ash bricks.
ETFE foil is a high translucency fabric which is extremely practical and economical.
ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL CLAY BRICKS: Fly ash bricks are produced with or without frog. The bricks are uniform in shape and size, therefore, therefore require less mortar in brickwork. Embodied energy of fly ash bricks is 70% less than conventional clay bricks. Plaster thickness required will be less compared to clay bricks, thus saving of cement mortar. These bricks are environment friendly as: It uses fly ash, which is by-product of thermal power stations. Saves agricultural land which is used for manufacturing of the clay bricks. Can be manufactured at construction site also.
LOW VOC PAINTS Low VOC paints has water based solvent rather than oil based solvent. Paints having oil based solvent release Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) which are harmful to our environment and sometimes carcinogenic. Therefore, Low VOC paints are environment friendly and sustainable.
FSC CERTIFIED TIMBER The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC does this by setting standards on forest products, along with certifying and labeling them as eco-friendly. FSC certified wood come from sustainably managed forests. Its main aim is to lower the environmental impact i.e. to maintain or restore the ecosystem, its biodiversity, resources and landscape. Maintenance of high conservation value forests - to maintain or enhance the attributes which defines such forests.
BIS RECOMMENDED WASTE MATERIALS FOR CONSTRUCTION Replacement of portland cement and aggreates from Plain as well as Reinforced Cement Concrete. Replacement is of the order of 35% to 70%
BENEFITS OF ETFE: ETFE is extremely lightweight in comparision to glass approximately 1% of the glass weight. It is a very great replacement for glazing as it transmits upto 95% of natural light and weighs a fraction of the mass. It helps to control solar glare and by adding additional layers it helps to control light transmission and solar heat gain. ETFE foil is unaffected by UV light, environmental weathering and pollution, and does not become brittle or discoloured over time, ensuring it is a buiding material for longer term. It is a low flammability material and self extinguishing. Therefore, it is a good option when health and fire safety is a specific concern.
CONCRETE CURING COMPOUND Concrete curing compound is a compound which helps to prevent the loss of moisture content from the concrete. It helps in saving water which is used for hydrating concrete on the construction sites. Acrylic Curing Compound seals the concrete in good manner. It is having property of adhesion to the subsequent plaster. No need to wash the surface of acrylic with hot water if we want to provide plastering.
SOLAR PV CELLS
Fly Ash - A waste product from thermal power plants. Blast Furnace Slag - A waste from steel industry.
ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR PV: Fly Ash
TiO2 CLADDING Nitrogen oxide is a poisonous gas—it's released into the air by both gasoline powered vehicles and coal burning power plants—when it reacts with other chemicals in the air, smog ris formed. In this new technology, titanium oxide (a naturally occurring oxide of titanium), a material that has been previously known to absorb nitrogen oxide is used with normal concrete to create photocatalytic blocks. With Gurugram facing threats of high smog and the office exposed to high ammount of smog, this new technology of treating smog can be very helpful for the local environment of the building.
Blast Furnace Slag
No harmful greenhouse gas emissions thus environmentally friendly. Especially appropriate for smart energy networks with distributed power generation. Highly promising future both for economical viability and environmental sustainability. Low operating and maintenance cost. Have no mechanically moving parts, have far less breakages or require less maintenance than other renewable energy systems. Produce no noise at all. Because solar energy coincides with energy needs for cooling, PV panels can provide an effective solution to energy demand peaks – especially in hot summer months where energy demand is high. Glass Cover
Ultraviolet Light
Anti-reflective sheet Cell Pollutants adsorb to surface
Adsorbed pollutants break down under UV light
Final products (CO2 and water) desorb
NIGHT FLUSHING
Night flushing or Night Purge Ventilation is a technique that involves keeping windows closed during the day, but opening them at night to flush warm air out of the building and cool thermal mass for the next day. Night flushing is only suitable for climates with a relatively high temperature range from day to night, like the desert.
LOW ODP SUBSTANCES The ozone depletion potential (ODP) of a chemical compound is the relative amount of degradation to the ozone layer it can cause. Compounds like CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons), CTC (Carbon Tetrachloride), Methyl Chloroform etc. which are widely used in refirgerators, air conditioners, fire extiguishers and in dry cleaning as solvents have a high ODP. Avoiding the use of such substances is important considering the ecological impact.
GREEN WALL A single façade (south oriented) with a vertical greening system can reduce the energy demand for air conditioning With respect to the energy savings for heating, due to the increase of the insulating properties with greening systems, the additional thermal resistance is assumed to be 0.09 km2 W. This value is used for both the direct and indirect greening systems analysed due to the fact that there is a stagnant air layer in and behind the foliage Vegetation has a positive effect on the well-being and residential satisfaction of the city’s inhabitants and has a great aesthetic value associated with it. It improves air quality, helps in carbon reduction, creates a good habitat and hence has a lot of benefits in social costs.
Frame and panel backing
Catalyst(TiO2) Reactor Surface
TERRACOTTA CLADDING Durable and resistant to ultraviolet radiation. It does not fade in sunlight. It is a recyclable, sustainable and eco –friendly material. Allows fast and easy application. It has low water absorption properties and is weather resistant. It has energy saving properties and prevents absorption of heat into the interiors. Good acoustic properties by reducing the level of sound absorption. It is a non-flammable material and has a very good fire resistance. Gives a very good aesthetic appeal. It is used in both modern buildings and in heritage buildings.
