SUSTAINABLE AND SMART PACKAGING DRIVING F&B INDUSTRY

Green packaging, also known as sustainable packaging, needs no introduction. It has become essential today because it consumes the least energy and has the minimum detrimental effects on the environment. With growing environmental concerns, it is essential that companies— especially those handling food and beverages (F&B)—present products in sustainable packaging. Today, customers not only demand it, but the rules are also changing. To stay competitive, F&B companies have to embrace sustainable methods of packaging and selling their products.

Sustainable packaging uses recyclable materials rather than conventional ones, like plastic and Styrofoam. Besides, green packaging consumes less energy and emits less greenhouse gases. The long-term health of both humans and the environment is enhanced by green packaging since it utilises less carbon than normal synthetic packaging.

Following the pandemic, consumer behaviour has changed. People have drastically shifted to healthier ways of packaging, or sustainable packaging. Sustainability is not only about recycling; it is also about how sustainably a company sources the product which is also about food safety. Packaging works as a ‘vehicle’ that makes the products lightweight, durable, and safe to consume. Eco-friendly packaging is mandatory for the planet, but it is a challenge for businesses dealing in packaging.

Smart packaging, on the other hand, rides on the use of advanced technologies in packaging materials and containers to enhance the functionality, sustainability, and security of products. The market for smart packaging is being driven by increasing demand for environmentfriendly and sustainable packaging options, growing use of smart labels for product tracking and authentication, and rising demand for creative packaging concepts to increase consumer engagement

and brand loyalty. Since businesses strive to assure timely and secure delivery of products to customers, the advent of e-commerce and online retail also supports the smart packaging market.

Impact on Food Industry

The fundamental role of food packaging is to preserve food quality, reduce food waste and foodborne diseases, and to reduce the corresponding negative impact of producing and circulating inedible or uneaten food has on our economy. This means the functional properties of packaging, especially its mass transfer properties, must meet the

particular requirements of the food in question.

For beverages, in particular, new consumer trends are driving many companies to adopt more sustainable methods of packaging and selling their products. Water comes in boxes, beer in paper bottles, and recyclable plastic is being used in a variety of products. Designs such as the tethered cap are becoming more popular and all of this is a step in the right direction.

Green packaging uses raw materials and later returns them to their natural state, reducing wastage of valuable resources, such as water and energy,

used in their production. There are numerous benefits of sustainable packaging. Here are a few…

It increases the shelf life of F&B products

• It uses disposable raw materials which can be decomposed easily

• It reduces carbon footprints, a measurement of a product’s impact on the environment

• It can be easily recycled, reused, and reduced, implying that the F&B industry can make its packaging more durable with fewer materials

Continued on page no 9

8 April 2023 | Food And Beverage Matrix

• It uses fewer raw materials, thus reducing the cost of production

• It uses eco-friendly inputs which can make the component safer to consume

F&B Packaging Trends

The F&B industry is one of the most important aspects of our society, no matter where you happen to live in the world. This is an industry that keeps us all going—from local fruit and vegetable growers to major instant snack producers. Aluminium cans, plastic containers, and glass bottles are among the most commonly used primary packaging solutions in the beverage industry, and all three contribute to the future of sustainable beverage packaging.

Future of Packaging in the F&B Industry

Packaging for F&B companies has a bright future. This includes the

entire life cycle of a food or beverage product—from internal systems that improve bulk shipping or warehousing to retail packaging systems. All indications point to this expanding industry. Retailers and consumers are putting pressure on companies to reconsider their packaging methods to meet their demands. International regulations are putting pressure on global F&B leaders to meet the requirements for continuing to expand business into the 21st Century. These pressures and demands are met by emerging technologies that enable F&B companies to expand their operations at low cost.

Green packaging is a game-changer in the F&B industry and also plays a significant role in reducing environmental impact. Not only that, but it can also assist beverages companies in remaining competitive in the market and promoting a positive brand image for their customers. Sustainability has already become a compelling motivator for consumer purchase decisions, and some of the sustainable initiatives are being implemented throughout the drink industry and incorporated into their packaging.n

MANGO MIGHT LOSE ITS SWEETNESS DUE TO CLIMATE IMPACT

Ushik Gala (The author is chairman & managing director at Suumaya

The King of FruitsMango, is facing a royal threat from the changing weather patterns and increasing temperatures due to climate change. As the largest producer of mangoes in the world, India is feeling the heat of this threat.

The quality and quantity of mango production are being affected by the inconsistency in weather patterns, leading to a decrease in the sweetness and overall quality of the fruit.

India is responsible for over 40% of global mango production, with other countries such as China, Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, Pakistan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and the Philippines contributing significantly as well. Mango production in India alone averaged around 23.09 million tonnes (MT), annually, making it a significant contributor to the country's agricultural sector.

However, last year, due to various climate-related factors, the production was a bit low, standing at 21 MT. Unfortunately, the situation seems to be similar this year, and we might see a delay in the arrival of mangoes from Gujarat and Maharashtra, two of the biggest mango-producing states in India, to start with.

The changing climate has affected the taste of mangoes, making them less sweet and more sour. This might lead to a decrease in demand for Indian mangoes in the global market, affecting the country's export market. In the fiscal year 2022, the volume of mangoes exported from

India accounted for approximately 28 thousand metric tons.

Although there was an increase from about 21 thousand metric tons in the previous fiscal year, the inconsistency in supply this year might lead to a decline in exports. However, the export of mango pulp might see an upswing, compensating for the decline in fresh mango exports.

The major mango-producing states in India are Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Karnataka. Uttar Pradesh is the largest mango-producing state in India, catering to 21% market share, with most of it used for table purposes.

The processed mango varieties are

produced mostly in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat. The most popular varieties of mangoes produced in India are Alphonso, Kesar, Totapuri, Chaunsa, and Dasheri. Mangoes are an important crop for India, both for domestic consumption as well as for export. India exports mangoes to countries like United States, United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal.

The effects of climate change on the quality and quantity of mango production in India can be attributed to various factors. The higher temperature differential during the flowering season in December has led to a decrease in the number of mango flowers, which results in fewer mangoes produced.

The untimely rain during preharvest in February has led to the rotting of mangoes, reducing the overall quality of the fruit. Higher than expected temperatures during harvesting from March to May has led to premature ripening, affecting the sweetness and taste of the mangoes.

However, there is hope. By adopting sustainable farming practices and promoting research and development, we can improve the resilience of mangoes to climate change. The government and various stakeholders in the mango value chain must come together to develop and implement strategies that can mitigate the impact of climate change on mango production. Sustainable practices such as reducing water usage, increasing the use of organic fertilizers, and promoting agroforestry can help to increase the resilience of mangoes to climate change.

Mangoes are not just a fruit; they are a cultural symbol of India, enjoyed by people around the world. Imagine a world without the juicy sweetness of Indian mangoes. By taking action now, we can ensure that future generations can continue to savour the sweet taste of this King of Fruits. n

INDIA MUST FOCUS ON BREED IMPROVEMENT, CATTLE PRODUCTIVITY TO BECOME DAIRY

TO THE WORLD : RUPALA

India must focus on breed improvement and enhancing cattle productivity to emerge as the dairy to the world, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala and dairy industry leaders said at inaugural session of the Indian Dairy Association’s (IDA) 49th Dairy Industry Conference and Expo in Gandhinagar.

Taking place in Gujarat after a gap of 27 years, the three-day conference has brought together dairy experts and professionals from India and overseas, dairy cooperatives, milk producers, government officials, scientists, policymakers and planners, academicians and other stakeholders. The theme of the conference is ‘India Dairy to the world: Opportunities & Challenges'.

“The Indian dairy industry has grown at a remarkable pace and has the potential to ensure milk and dairy security for the world. The need of the hour is to focus on breed improvement. Even with an average milk production of 2.5-3 litres per cattle, we are the largest milk producer in the world. Imagine where India will reach in the dairy industry if we can increase productivity to 10 litres. We need to take up breed improvement on a mission mode to realise this goal and take the dairy industry to new highs in Amrit Kaal,” said Rupala.

RS Sodhi, president, Indian Dairy Association, said, “The last time Gujarat had hosted the Dairy

Industry Conference was at Anand in 1996. The progress made by the dairy industry since then is unmatched. At the time, India’s milk production was only 71 million tonnes, which has gone up to 222 million tonnes now. India’s milk production has gone up by three times, but in Gujarat, it has grown by nine times from 30 lakh litres per day to 270 lakh litres. The determination to become selfreliant, efficient supply chain, and investments in infrastructure have contributed to the growth of the dairy industry.”

A souvenir of the Dairy Industry Conference was unveiled at the inaugural session. The Indian Dairy Association’s awards to recognise individuals and organisations for their contribution to the

growth of the dairy industry were also presented on the occasion. Piercristiano Brazzale, president of International Dairy Federation (IDF), shared his thoughts about the world dairy scenario.

Professor Ramesh Chand, NITI Aayog member, said, “Milk and milk products are playing an important role in meeting the country’s nutrition needs. According to nutrition experts, a healthy person needs 380 ml of milk per day. Considering the spoilage, the per capita production should be around 420 ml per day. As a country, we crossed this important milestone in 2020-21 and our production is above the recommended levels. India’s milk demand has been growing at 6% but the population growth is only 1%.

To ensure sustained growth of the industry, we must look to develop markets for our milk overseas. We also need to focus on improving the quality of our milk.”

Delivering the keynote address, Meenesh Shah, chairman, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), said, “We have a blueprint ready for vision 2047 and it is time we all effectively collaborate synergies to achieve it. By 2047, we plan to increase bovine productivity by four times, increase Indian dairy exports to 15% of total global dairy export, and build sustainable green practices to achieve COP26 targets. I invite you all to actively participate in this transformative expedition.” n

INDIA TO WRITE A SPECTACULAR STORY IN AMRITKAL WITH SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURE SECTOR: PATHAK

Describing the coming together of Centre, states, industry and Civil Society organisation in the welfare of agriculture sector a healthy thing, Dr Himanshu Pathak, director general, Indian Council of Agriculture Research and secretary, Department of Agriculture Research and Education (DARE), under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India said that in the next 25 years, by the time India’s Amritkal is complete, India will write a better and spectacular story wherein agriculture sector will play an important role.

He was speaking at a seminar in New Delhi on “Unlocking the Potential of India’s Agriculture: Key to Unleash A Thriving Economy” organised by the Foundation for the Growth of New India or FGNI.

Dr Pathak who himself was a farmer in his early growing up years said that he feels the pain of India’s farmers, particularly the small and marginal farmers.

Citing the recent applauds India has received by Bill Gates and various countries, he said, “We have come a long way from begging bowl in hands to self sufficiency and second largest producer of food grains, however, if India is to be developed nation, most probably by 2047, it cannot happen without agriculture and contribution of small and marginal farmers.”

Dr Pathak was joined by Dr R. B. Singh, a hugely respected figure in India’s agriculture policy field, ‘Padma Bhushan’ awardee, chancellor of Central Agricultural University, Imphal and president & founding member of FGNI and R. G. Agarwal, advisor, FGNI.

Dr R. B. Singh strongly pitched for making growth inclusive, sustainable, symmetric, high-performing and in line with SDG goals of India.

Calling for making “New India” a truly New India which is equitable, prosperous and happy too, Dr R. B. Singh said, “World is looking towards India for direction, G20 presidency being one of such instances,

however rather than being complacent, we should empower our farmers and rural populace, who constitute about 50% of population with technology to increase their income from being one fourth in comparison to non-farmers to being equal to any other group. This can make the vision of $5 trillion economy vision true with at least $1 trillion contribution of agriculture sector.”

Agarwal spoke at length on a number of issues faced by

Indian farmers, including use of injurious pesticides imported from China which is damaging the soil and crops, lack of technology in hands of farmers, different treatment to fertilizer and pesticides by the government etc. and demanded free & competitive markets to maximize farmers’ income, time bound approval for researched based products used in agriculture, enabling policy initiatives & incentives for precision farming and advance IT tools for agriculture.

“India has a great potential to increase both production and export of food grains and crop chemicals. If we have a more enabling environment and policy support, India can easily be the leader in this space. Moreover, if we can done away with waste of food grains which is roughly 30%, which is possible through technology, we will be prepared to meet our requirements in 2050 too,“ said Agarwal. n

Deep rooted connections with flavours, stories and nostalgia, the brand now introduces gourmet ice creams in six unique and premium flavours. Each of the ice creams brings an irresistible mix of flavour profiles, set to satisfy every taste and inspire moments of everyday happiness. To match their yummy ice creams, the brand collaborated with Pure Waste to design a range of responsibly produced recycled t-shirts. These t-shirts are exclusively made to celebrate the brand's new range of nostalgic artisanal ice creams.

The icecream flavours are so unique that you might be spoilt for choices. “Honeycomb & Sweetcorn”, “Dark Chocolate & Olive Oil”, “Caramelised Chocolate & Cheese”, “Pineapple Energee” , “Avocado & Honey” and “Durian

coconut fumes and the forbidden Asian Durian Fruit known for its distinct taste and flavour churned into one-of-a-kind handmade ice cream exclusively available at Burma Burma.

Offering the yummiest ice creams in a variety of flavours for Indian homes is a new dimension added by the recognised multiple outlet brand. These delectable scoops are here to win your hearts with the best quality ingredients.

Commenting on the launch, cofounder Ankit Gupta, says, "The

recently introduced flavours are a reflection of the preferences of Millennials and Gen Z. We have played upon the nostalgia of ice cream rituals such as visiting parlours, birthday parties, bowls shared with families & guests which to an extent helped us in creation of each flavour. Thus making this new range accessible and enjoyable for all ages. These new flavours represent our passion and commitment to creating what’s ‘next’ on our menu. Our packaging is equally nostalgic and breaks through the monotony by encapsulating the feeling of vintage parlours and ice cream trucks.”

FOR STRENGTHENING AGRICULTURAL TIES WITH COUNTRIES AT MEETINGS WITH MINISTERS

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar recently held bilateral meetings with agriculture ministers of various countries participating in the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference. An MoU was also signed with the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations. Meanwhile, Tomar thanked the ministers for being a part of the global conference organised by India with the aim of promoting Shree Anna, under the International Year of Millets (IYM). He said that the International Year of Millets is being celebrated so that the Indian Shree Anna, its recipes and value-added products are accepted globally as a people's movement. He hoped to further strengthen India's agricultural ties with various countries.

In a meeting with Guyana's Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustafa, Tomar recalled the visit of the President of Guyana, Dr. Mohammad Irfan Ali, and Vice President Bharat Jagdev to India and said that agriculture is a very important area of cooperation between the two countries. Expressing happiness over the steady progress in India-Guyana relations, he hoped for concrete cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors. Tomar congratulated Guyana for the huge crude oil discovery, saying that this would enable Guyana to establish itself as a major energy exporter, which has the potential to transform the lives of its people. Expressing immense potential for cooperation in agriculture and agroprocessing industries between India and Guyana, he said that the two countries complement each other as Guyana has vast arable land and water availability and India has the technology, expertise and skilled manpower, which will mutually benefit both the countries. India is keen to share its expertise and experience in the development of agriculture and allied sectors in Guyana, for which an MoU is under finalisation. He assured that Guyana's request for deputation of

two experts to ITEC from India for three years to support the Guyana Sugar Corporation management and revive the sugar estates/plants in Guyana would be considered at the earliest.

Tomar, in a meeting with Suriname's Minister of Agriculture Parmanand Prahlad Sewdien, said that India and Suriname share close, warm and friendly relations, which have been strengthened by cultural and peopleto-people contacts over the course of 150 years. He wished success to the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in Suriname, and expressed confidence that the official visit of President Santokhi to India in January 2023 would take our bilateral relations to a new high. Expressing happiness and pride, he said that Hindi is spoken on a large scale in Suriname. Like India, Suriname is also a country of multi-ethnicity and diversity, where people live in peace and harmony. As per the discussion held during the second meeting of the Joint Working Group on Agriculture, Tomar hoped that the draft Joint Action Plan for five years (2023-27) would be ready soon and said that we will provide wood export facility from Suriname to India. India's exports of agri-related goods to Suriname in 2021-22 was US$4.34 million. There are more possibilities to increase trade and investment, especially in agro-food processing. Under India's flagship programmes, development partnership, India is committed to provide technical

assistance to Suriname as needed, contribute to capacity building and skill development of human resources. Shree Anna is the ideal solution to make countries selfreliant and reduce dependence on imported grains. India can start agricultural cooperation projects, if offered by Suriname, as well as depute agricultural scientists under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programmes to conduct studies for the cultivation of Shree Anna in Suriname.

In a meeting with Agriculture

Minister of Zambia Reuben Mtolo Phiri, Tomar said that India and Zambia have had cordial relations for a long time. The leaders of Zambia's freedom struggle drew inspiration from the leaders of India's freedom struggle, especially Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji continues to inspire its leaders and the younger generation in Zambia. Zambia is one of the few African countries that has benefited greatly from India's development cooperation programme. India provides scholarships for various higher education courses and ITEC training slots as well as special capacity building programmes under the India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) along with Exim Bank credit, Railway Wagons, Flood Relief Grant and Line of Credit. Zambia, with its rich natural resources, has become an important destination for Indian investments in various sectors. India is one of the leading investors in Zambia with committed investments

of over US$5 billion. Bilateral trade between India and Zambia has been growing steadily. In recent years, there has been renewed interest in India for trade and investment with Zambia, but again logistics and the small size of Zambia's economy remain the main constraints and limiting factors.

In a meeting with Mauritius' Minister for Agri-Industry and Food Security Manish Gobin, Tomar said that India shares close, long-standing ties with Mauritius for historical, demographic and cultural reasons. People of Indian origin comprise about 70% of the island's population of 1.2 million. Mauritius is one of the few important countries with which independent India established diplomatic relations even before the Independence of Mauritius in 1948. There is a high level of trust and mutual understanding between the leaderships of the two countries, which is reflected in continued highlevel political engagement. This special relationship has resulted in exceptionally close cooperation in maritime security, development partnership, capacity building and cooperation in international fora. The enduring cultural and peopleto-people relations between India and Mauritius are nurtured by the Indian Cultural Center in Mauritius (India's largest in the world) and the World Hindi Secretariat, a bilateral organisation for the promotion of Hindi. India is among the largest trading partners of Mauritius. Bilateral trade grew by 69% to reach US$786.72 million in 2021-22.

The topics of agriculture were discussed in the meeting between Tomar and Mahinda Amaraweera, Agriculture Minister of Sri Lanka. Tomar said that a significant proportion of the population in India and Sri Lanka depends on agriculture and both sides have very similar priorities for taking this sector forward. Thus cooperation between the two sides in the agriculture sector becomes natural. India has traditionally been one of Sri Lanka's largest trading partners and Sri Lanka is one of India's largest trading partners in SAARC.

METTLER-TOLEDO LAUNCHES 100% AUTOMATED LABEL INSPECTION SOLUTION SUITE

Mettler-Toledo

Product Inspection has launched a completely automated, full label inspection service for food manufacturers. The technology inspects 100% of products and shapes and identifies 100% of label data and quality challenges. This new portfolio, consisting of the V13 Flat Pack Label, CV and CMV Combination, is a cost effective way to exchange unreliable, manual spot checks with 100% automated label inspection in high speed production lines. The solution helps to achieve documented label inspection in line with industry guidelines such as the BRCGS to support consumer safety, prevent recalls and expensive retailer fines.

“We are very excited to be launching our new label inspection technology offering,” says Neil Gruettner, business development manager, vision inspection, Mettler-Toledo. “The 100% automated label inspection portfolio is fully flexible and offers solutions that can easily be integrated into existing production lines, either as installation kits, standalone systems or combined with other Mettler-Toledo product

inspection devices, such as checkweighers, metal detectors or x-ray systems. We are looking forward to demonstrating to new and existing customers how easy it is to replace manual spot checks with 100% label inspection. All help to reduce rework, recall risks and retailer fines”.

Many manufacturers struggle with label data and label quality issues. From common operator errors to equipment malfunctions, including torn labels or ink smudging, labelling has long been an issue for manufacturers that cannot be

effectively solved with manual spot checks. Whether it is checking the right product is in the right package, the codes are readable and the ingredients such as allergens are correct, the new label inspection offering from the company reliably detects every non conformity.

The new offering includes advanced smart cameras to inspect oriented products from the side and top. This unique new smart line scan camera effectively inspects labels or prints on the underside of products and offers a 360° degree inspection head for checking round objects. The

cameras can be mixed and matched to suit any production need and can also be used to inspect caps and lids. The software is particularly easy to use, featuring a dedicated tool set for label inspection that helps with product set-up. Additionally, it offers Software Tooltips which are inspection tools to intuitively guide operators through the image processing settings such as lights, shutter or focus to maximise image quality. The new technology can be retrofitted onto existing equipment offering considerable space savings. n

FIRST COMPACT MADE IN INDIA LPG VAPORISERS BY PUNE GAS

The sweating or freezing of LPG cylinders is a common problem faced by commercial LPG users, leading to a loss of fuel and leaking profits. To overcome this problem, many users resort to unscientific and inefficient solutions that are massive safety hazards. The best and most efficient solution to this problem exists in the form of LOT (liquid offtake) cylinders. These cylinders provide an efficient solution to this problem, but the requirement of a vaporiser poses a challenge due to space constraints and high maintenance costs. This poses a significant problem for many commercial users like restaurants, hotels, eateries, canteens, central kitchens, and other commercial food service establishments with space constraints.

As a solution to this, Pune Gas - India’s pioneers in providing modern solutions to heat and gas needs showcased India’s first high off-take compact LPG System in the 37th edition of Aahar. This LOT system is the country’s first

high-efficiency dry-type vaporiser and is a game-changing solution for various industries, offering the best and most efficient solution to India’s most hazardous practices. Made to perfection with extensive research, the LPG vaporiser is a German Engineering - Made in India solution for the everchanging gas needs of the country.

Jesal Sampat, executive director, Pune Gas, said, “We are thrilled to introduce the country’s first high off-take compact LPG system in the 37th edition of Aahar. The system will be a revolutionary model in the commercial foodservice and hospitality industries. Participating at Aahar has been an exciting experience

post-pandemic. We believe we will make a real difference in India across industries by providing them with a reliable, compact, and easy-to-use made-in-India solution.”

This technology is India's first compact LPG system that comes with a high-efficiency dry-type vaporiser. It is enclosed in a flameproof panel, making it safe for use, and best suited for users who offtake or use LPG up to 50 kg/hr. To make the installation process more easier and friendly for LOT cylinders, the skid-mounted unit or the panel enclosure with plugand-play functionality has been introduced. The LPG system is mounted on a heavy-duty fabricated MS structural skid and comes with cylinder manifolds with fittings. In the near future, the dry-type vaporiser will also come in two higher capacity models: 100 kg/hr and 200 kg/hr, providing flexibility to commercial users to choose the right size based on their LPG usage and requirements.
