December 3, 2023. On that day, she would close the chapter on a life well-lived as a faithful woman of God.

Eva was the firstborn to her parents, the late Gaston Flowers, Sr. and Gladys Davis Flowers, on October 29, 1942, in Oak City, North Carolina. Eva’s father was an officer in the Army until his retirement, which was the catalyst for their relocation to New Jersey. Her time in New Jersey was short-lived, as the transition of her father and the maladjustment of her mother would lead Eva back to North Carolina in 1956. Eva, alongside her siblings, worked on a farm with their grandparents as sharecroppers. There, her grandmother, Lilly, instilled respect and the fear of God amongst her grandchildren. Life proved difficult for Eva, who had to navigate the demands of secondary school and dismal means of residing in the slave quarters she knew as home. Despite the harshness of her reality, Eva was a stellar student, admired by her siblings, and possessed an infectious smile that bettered days and hearts. After her graduation, Eva moved to New York in 1961 to work as a live-in for the Cameron family. A new life in a new city would open a world of possibility, especially that of love. A night out, a club brawl, and a few croons later, Eva would meet the promise of love, Clarence Hall, Sr. Their union was born on March 4, 1963, and went on to abound in the lives of their five children: Denise, Dorothea, Clarence, Jr., Matthew, and Danielle. The declining availability of employment and the growth of her family encouraged Eva to seek entrepreneurship in the hospitality sector. After receiving an invitation to come to church from her neighbor, Lois Arrington, Eva became a member of the Progressive Holiness Church in the fall of 1970 and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. It was there that her late pastor, Bishop H. L. Brown, encouraged her to apply for an L.L.C. which aided her in becoming the CEO of her own business. Eva was not a stranger to praising God or service, which she offered during her time as a member. During her years of faithfulness, Eva served as the secretary of the Progressive Chronicle, a missionary, an usher, and sang in the choir. On Mother’s Day of 2022, the title of ‘Mother’ was bestowed upon Eva by Pastor Fate Simpkins. Yet, while Eva’s impact in ministry spurred the prophetic, the ministry of her home was of the most resounding. As the extensions of her family grew, so did her love. Eva’s love for her family was both visceral and radiant. Her constant encouragement over her children fueled the belief that anything is possible. Eva’s home was the ultimate overnight camp filled with love, food, and free cable for her grandchildren who adored her. Her kitchen table was the haven for which she shared late-night talks and a side of dessert (most likely the chocolate kind!) with her son-in-law. The laundromat is where she taught lessons about decisionmaking, and her garden is where she demonstrated God’s ability to break something before making it beautiful. Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Hall, Sr.; sister, Marguerite Flowers; and brother Gaston Flowers. With deep gratitude and love, Eva leaves to cherish her memory five children: Denise Sawyer, Dorothea (David) Wise, Clarence Hall, Jr., Matthew (Regina) Hall, and Danielle Hall; sisters: Gloria Flowers and Catherine Flowers; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
