Taking good care of your leatherwork will help keep it supple and smart and, most importantly, make it last longer. Developments in leather care mean there are plenty of great products to choose from – we put a selection of cleaners to the test on a range of tack to see how they performed.

Soft-soap formula that’s kind to hands and leather.
Contains beeswax, carnauba and shellac natural waxes.
We say... Soft consistency, but this means application was tricker due to the consistency. We had to use quite a lot to get a good result, but it cleaned well leaving tack shiny, with no slipperiness or stickiness.
We say... Waxy but soft consistency, and not greasy. It was easy to apply, but needed buffing in to get a good result. A little went a long way. Tack was softer and shinier after use and it seemed to protect leather from the rain.

We say... Soft, jelly-like consistency that mixes into a bucket of water, but easy to apply. Little was needed to get a good result. It kept tack supple and moisturised, without slipperiness or stickiness. No need for conditioner after every use.
We say... Liquid consistency that comes out as a fine mist. Easy to apply with good coverage and a little went a long way. It cleaned and removed dirt and grease well, although needed soaking time for dirtier areas. A good preparation for conditioner.

We say... Creamy consistency that’s easy to apply with cloth, and provided good coverage. It removed mud, sweat and grease with minimal effort and tack felt softer without leaving residue. Bonus that it conditions the leather, too.
We say... Thin consistency that applied easily, with great coverage. It cleaned well, and did a good job of removing grime and grease easily with no slippery residue. Tack felt more supple and grippy than before.

Stübben Glycerin Leather Soap £13.90 for 500g A glycerine-based soap designed for deep cleansing. We say... Solid soap that was easy to apply with a damp sponge, giving good coverage. It cleaned well, and a little went a long way. It didn’t leave tack slippery, but it felt more supple than before and was shiny. Sponge provided is a bonus.
Oakwood Liquid Saddle Soap £12.07 for 500ml Glycerine-based, neutral-pH formula. We say... Fairly thick consistency that was easy to apply with a damp cloth. A little went a long way. It cleaned really well, especially on very sweaty tack, without leaving it slippery or dull. Great for daily cleaning.
Lincoln Superior Leather Cleansing Gel £14.50 for 500ml A pH-balanced formula to be used without water. We say... Good consistency and easy to apply. A little went a long way and it did a brilliant job at removing dirt, grease and sweat, leaving the leather soft and shiny with no sticky residue.

We say... Creamy consistency that was easy to apply, but a quite a lot was needed to get a good result. It cleaned and conditioned well with no stickiness, although leather didn’t appear as shiny, or grippy, as we’d hoped.
We say... Thicker spray-on consistency. A little went a long way. Removed dirt and grease well, leaving leather shiny with no slipperiness. Tack felt more supple and soft. Removable cap was helpful to prevent leaking.
