HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

There will be a Hands On Jan. 16th at 10am at the club. There will be classes on Flint Knapping, Intarsia, Cabbing and Wire Fusing. All of the classes sound fun and I am looking forward to learning more myself. I am looking forward to serving as your President in 2010! My goal is to do the best I possibly can for you, the members and for the club. 2010 will be a fun and great year for all!! Best wishes~Deborrah Pursifull

A Note from LaVon and Mike We will be in Arizona until about the 20th of February. So far in December, Quartzsite had a tornado that blew down 400 tents, awnings etc., and Tucson had a dust storm with zero visibility. If you are down that way, stop by and see us. I will rustle up a cup of coffee for you. Jan1-27 we are in Tyson Wells, I-23, in Quartzsite. Mike and Ken are doing the QIA the 20th-27th. Jan. 28-Feb. 16th we will be in Tucson RV Electric Park. If you haven't visited either of these places at this time of year, it is alot of fun and there is LOTS of rock. Ask Dana and Paul, they visited us last year. See you in February, LaVon, Mike, Ken and Cheri

Looks like a lot is going on this month with the various meetings and hands on activities. I didn’t get any info regarding a field trip, so more than likely one isn’t planned for January. NEW INTERACTIVE WEB SITE FOR CLUB MEMBERS This site is to add your helpful hints, upload photos, blog about your field trip, and just find out all the upcoming information about the club including meetings, hands on and field trips. Here is the web address: http://puyallupgemclub.ning.com/ Sign up today. Obviously you don’t have to sign up to see what’s going on, but in the future I may limit access to only club members and if you aren’t signed up then you will not be able to access it. We will still have our official web site with more static information for visitors. So far on the site I have updated that hands on activities for January, uploaded various club photos, created an events calendar and Paul has even started a Club Show group to keep club show volunteers abreast of what’s going on with the show committee. I’m still trying to figure out how to upload this newsletter and show flyers, so this is a work in progress and it will only get bigger.

If you would like to submit a letter to the Editor, an article, pictures from a recent field trip, poem, recipe or anything at all that club members might fine interesting, please send to E-mail address: djames50@nventure.com, or mail to 5044 S. Park Ave., Tacoma, WA 98408.

Hands On Activities for January 16th For January the classes offered will be Flint Knapping, Intarsia and Wire Fusing. I have included sample pictures of these activities, so come and have some fun. The only class with a fee will be the Wire Fusing at $35.00 unless you bring your own .999 fine silver wire 16 gauge (1 ounce), small torch and fire brick.

Wire Fusing jewelry is made using .999 fine silver wire. The wire is heated with a torch on a fire brick and fused together to form rings that are then linked and fused again to create a secure chain.

Intarsia or Pietra dura is the process of inlaying cuts of gemstone in a pattern such as a mosaic and then cabbing to create a pendant for wire wrapping, belt buckle or bolo tie.

Knapping is the shaping of flint, obsidian, or chert stone into spears, arrow heads or knives.

AFMS Rockhounders Code of Ethics

I will respect both private and public property and will do no collecting on privately owned land without permission from the owner. I will keep informed on all laws, regulations or rules governing collecting on public lands and will observe them. I will, to the best of my ability, ascertain the boundary lines of property on which I plan to collect.

I will use no firearms or blasting material in collecting areas.

I will cause no willful damage to property of any kind such as fences, signs, buildings, etc.

I will leave all gates as found.

I will build fires only in designated or safe places and will be certain they are completely extinguished before leaving the area.

I will discard no burning material - matches, cigarettes, etc.

I will fill all excavation holes which may be dangerous to livestock.

I will not contaminate wells, creeks, or other water supplies.

I will cause no willful damage to collecting material and will take home only what I can reasonably use. I will practice conservation and undertake to utilize fully and well the materials I have collected and will recycle my surplus for the pleasure and benefit of others. I will support the rockhound project H.E.L.P. (Help Eliminate Litter Please) and will leave all collecting areas devoid of litter, regardless of how found. I will cooperate with field-trip leaders and those in designated authority in all collecting areas.

• •

• • • •

• •

I will report to my club or federation officers, Bureau of Land Management or other authorities, any deposit of petrified wood or other materials on public lands which should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations for public educational and scientific purposes. I will appreciate and protect our heritage of natural resources. I will observe the “Golden Rule”, will use Good Outdoor Manners and will at all times conduct myself in a manner which will add to the stature and Public Image of Rockhounds everywhere.

Every year at this time I reprint the Code of Ethics in the newsletter. I think that all of us need to be reminded from time to time. Dana James

How To Corner by Dana James For all you beaders out there, I found this great tutorial on the Fire Mountain Gems web site. Looks easy enough that I might even be able to make it.

Lariet seed beaded Necklace Materials Needed: Seed Beads, Matsuno, #11 Seed Beads, Czech, #11 Pearls, Swarovski crystal, 12 mm Thread Needles Scissors

Step 1 Using ladderstitch, weave 1 Czech Jablonex seed bead, 3 Matsuno 11's and one Czech Jablonex seed bead. The 2 beads at each end must be smaller than the 3 in the middle. You could try using size 8/0 and 6/0.

Step 2 Brickstitch means you attach your beads to the thread used in the previous row, not to the beads themselves. SKIP the first thread on this side of your work.

Step 3 Add the same beads to the base you just made, ie. 1 Czech, 3 Matsuno and 1 Czech. Note: It is important to pull tight when adding beads on both end-sides of the work. If you do not pull tight on each side when adding the Czech seed beads, the ribbon will not curl.

Volume 50, Issue 1

January 2010, Page 11

Step 4 On your way back, DO NOT SKIP the first thread.

Step 5 Continue until you reach the desired length.

Finishing Touches

You Are Invited to a Smash of a Party

Step 6 At each side of the ribbon, make diminutions as shown. There will be only two Czech seed beads left at each end.

Step 7 Attached the extremity of the ribbon to a matsuno bead in the middle of the ribbon adding one 12mm Swarovski crystal pearl on one side, and making an empty loop on the other size of the work, wide enough for letting the part with the crystal pearl pass through.

Step 8 Always secure your thread carefully. For more great ideas and tutorials visit the Fire Mountain Gems Web site. http://www.firemountaingems.com/beading_howtos/default.asp
