When I first introduced the concept of Destination Jeddah, many were skeptical. The most common claims revolved around Jeddah’s limited attractions and recreation activities. But as a native Jeddawi, living most of my life in this city, I knew all along that Jeddah has a lot to offer, and what better prove than Destination Jeddah’s monthly packed issues. To this day, I keep discovering new fascinating things about Jeddah. From History to culture, Jeddah is the melting pot of the Middle East. Diversity is what makes us unique. The mixed cultures and backgrounds of Jeddah’s residents is the result of years of pilgrimage to Makkah and we are proud to be the stopping point for Pilgrims from around the world. Most people agree that Jeddah has immense potential to be an economic center and tourist hot spot among the best in the Middle East. The question is whether we are heading towards that goal. Personally, I believe we are. Looking at the past 10 years, Jeddah has grown rapidly. Destination Jeddah is here to document that change in the years to come and Jeddah will always have something new to offer. There is so much to see and do in Jeddah. Our team has been doing their best to provide accurate and useful information to our readers. From reviewing new openings around town to rediscovering the old, we strive to be the first to cover it. Nevertheless, we welcome your suggestions, comments, and opinions. We are trying to please you, the reader, so please write to us: info@destinationjeddah.com

Cruise Ships bring Tourists to Jeddah
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
by: Nada Al-Mojdedi and Motaz Bahri Photography by: Motaz Bahri & Yasser Anan
Jeddah is becoming a new destination for cruise ships. During October 2008, two ships transporting visitors from around the world docked in Jeddah’s Islamic Port, and passengers were led on a tour of the coastal city.
Passengers of cruise ships Hanseatic and MV Deutschland docked at the Islamic Port of Jeddah on October 12 and 25, respectively. Jeddah was one stop on their cruise tour of the Middle East and Mediterranean. The tourists represented Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, Britain and even Brazil.

Friendly tour guides from the Supreme Commission of Tourism greeted them at the port dock. Visitors were encouraged to wear light clothes, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, and women were given abayas to wear before entering the port terminal and beginning their tour of many local sites.
Abdalraouf Khalil Museum: Both groups visited Abdalraouf Khalil Museum, which presents three phases of Saudi Arabia’s archeological history: ancient heritage, the Othman Empire and European development. The architecture of the museum is reminiscent of traditional Hejazi buildings, and the different types of items displayed inside tell the history of the region over time. Abdalraouf Khalil Museum

Jeddah’s Street Arts: In air-conditioned buses, visitors drove along Jeddah’s south cornich and took in the view of sculptures along the coast and at famous roundabouts. Many were surprised to learn that international artists designed many of the public works of art. They saw Jeddah’s famous bicycle, one of the largest in the world, as well as the giant setsquare, dividers and protractor, and the solar system. Local Food: The first group enjoyed classic Middle Eastern cuisine at Byblos Restaurant. Most could not finish the full-course meal because the appetizers alone were so filling. Nevertheless, they loved the food and enjoyed coffee and Arabic sweets afterwards.
Naseef House, Main Square
Bangala Fish Market: Tourists had the chance to see the fish, lobster, shrimp, shark and other seafood available from the Red Sea at this local fish market. Before returning to their ship, tourists shared their impressions of Jeddah. Many expressed interest in revisiting and spending more time in the port city.
Naseef House
Al-Balad: Visitors also explored Al-Balad (old Jeddah). Tour guide, Khalid Khafaji, showed the visitors to historic buildings previously owned by Jeddah’s most famous families, pointing out the wonderfully preserved architecture. They also visited Naseef House, the most famous house in Al-Balad. Owned by Naseef family, this five-story building is a traditional hijazi piece of art. Gold Souk: After visiting the Naseef House, the tourists were given an opportunity to walk around Balad’s gold souk. Eager salesmen greeted them, excited to see such a large crowd on a Sunday morning. Some women in the first group bought saffron instead of gold, pleased to find this special spice not available in their home country. 8

Rosa Maruhn, a German tour guide said she felt very welcome in Jeddah. She was happy to find the locals very kind and easy going. She thought Jeddah, especially Al-Balad, was really interesting and the tour was well organized and conducted professionally. Viola Hoss, who works in advertising, and her father Hermann Joseph Hoss, a retired member of the board of directors at a large German company, also enjoyed the tour. They wanted to visit Jeddah to see for themselves if what was presented to them on television was really the right image. They knew about the city’s modern side, but they were really surprised to see the old town and learn about Saudi heritage.
Rainer Rossi, a dentist, thought Jeddah was a very special city, and that its citizens are “very nice people.” He reads a lot about Islamic countries and their history. The main reason he visited Jeddah was to learn more about the world he always saw on television and read about in books. As the city where the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lived and taught before his triumphant return to Makkah, Madinah is central in Islamic history. Millions of pilgrims visit Madinah each year. The Destination Jeddah team met at 8 o’clock one October morning, dressed comfortably in sturdy walking shoes and ready to enjoy the cooler weather in the mountainous region. DESTINATION JEDDAH 11

THE ROAD TO MADINAH-We headed out on our four-hour minibus ride from Jeddah to Madinah. There are few rest stops along the way, but the scenic desert highway is beautiful. You will see jagged mountains protruding from the sand, extinct volcanoes surrounded by expanses of black volcanic rocks, and the occasional oasis of green palms. Herds of camels graze near the camps of their Bedouin owners, and we even spotted some baboons basking in the sunlight near the road. 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Entering Madinah
FIRST STOP: QUBA MOSQUE-At Quba Mosque, we were greeted by Mohammad A. Kutbi, a native Madini and certified tour guide from the Supreme Commission of Tourism. Madinis are known for being friendly and hospitable, and our tour guide fit that description perfectly. Quba was the first mosque, and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself laid its foundation. Praying here is the equivalent of completing Umrah with the prophet. We drove past the Mosque of the Cloud (Masjid Al Gumamah), where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would pray for rain and clouds appeared overhead. The prophet also prayed here during Eid.
VISITING THE PROPHET AT MASJID AL NABAWI-The group prayed in Madinah’s largest mosque, the Mosque of the Prophet (Masjid Al Nabawi), and visited Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) tomb. This mosque’s domes cover skylights that flood the mosque with sunlight during the day. Next to the mosque is a the cemetery Baqeea’ al Garqad, where more than 10,000 of Muhammad’s (PBUH) friends and relatives were laid to rest. Tour Guide Mohammed Kutbi talks about The Ohud Battle to Destination’s team
LUNCHTIME: A BLESSED ABUNDANCE We enjoyed a traditional Madini meal, including boukhary (chicken and rice) and savory mantu (dumplings) from a local restaurant. Prophet Muhammad prayed special blessings on the food in Madinah. Our tour guide Mr.Kutbi, pointed out that although the few small bags of food he ordered may not have looked like enough to feed our group, we all ate until satisfied. We even had leftovers. JABAL OHUD AREA-Our tour guide Mr.Kutbi, led us on a hike up rocky terrain to the cave where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed and recovered from battle wounds. We took pictures inside the narrow cave, and breathed in the mysterious, distinctive scent that has lingered in the spot since the prophet was there. Within walking distance from that small cavern is another rocky crevice where the prophet once rested his head on a boulder, and the imprint of his head is believed to have remained on the rock. The imprint has been cemented over to deter tourists from the site, but our tour guide showed us where it was. THE MARTYRS OF OHUD-At the battle site of Shohada Ohud, we visited the graves of 70 martyred Muslim soldiers. Visitors can climb the hill where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed his soldiers to wait through the night after a battle, but the soldiers disobeyed and were killed by enemy army. The tomb of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) uncle, Hamza ibn Abdul Motalib, is also located here.
PALACE OF SA’AD-We pulled off the highway to explore Dar al Sa’ad ibn abi Al Wakkas, a partially preserved palace that belonged to one of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) companions. The building’s architectural beauty is still evident after 1,400 years, and the view from the roof at sunset was stunning. Above and right: Ruins of Sa`ad ibn Al Waqqas Palace

LEGENDS OF THE PALMS- We took lots of pictures at Ka’ab ibn Al Ashraf, one of the city’s oldest palm groves. Madinah is renowned for more than 150 varieties of dates. Although Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed blessings upon all food in the city, dates are particularly famous. Some believe that to keep a Madinah date pit in your wallet means never running out of cash. We drove past a site that was once a famous palm grove. Mr.Kutbi told us that a slave named Salman Al-Faresi converted to Islam after his owner challenged the prophet to grow date palms on the previously barren land. The prophet succeeded in growing fruitful trees in less than one day, and Al-Faresi was freed and became a faithful follower of Islam. Until recently, a single date from the grove sold for 1 Riyal. Now there is not one palm tree in sight. Four years ago they built a school on the land, which happens to be right next door to the home of Mariah Al-Qibtiyya, one of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) wives.

The station is part of a recreational park with activities, snacks and local crafts. LEAVING TOWN-No trip to Madinah is complete without sampling the city’s famous food. In addition to the famous dates, loaves

of sesame seed bread called shriek from the famous Kaki Bakery or bags of mint and green tea make tasty souvenir gifts. On the long night drive back to Jeddah, we decided that next time we would prefer to fly or take a larger, more comfortable tour bus to Madinah. It also would have been nice to stay two days to see more sites and enjoy the nightlife in Madinah. Our day trip to Madinah was an enriching experience, especially for the first-time visitors in our group. The city is well worth touring for those who are interested in its peaceful, sacred atmosphere and fascinating history. Tour Guide: Mr. Mohammed Kutbi. +966-500931931 16 DESTINATION JEDDAH

EVENTS & HAPPENINGS
umerous events take place around Jeddah, keeping up with all of them is a challenging task, therefore in this section we highlight some of the important ones, and please do not miss our calendar section to check on the upcoming events in Jeddah.
World Sight Day observed in Jeddah: World Sight Day, an annual event to increase global awareness of blindness and vision impairment, was observed in Jeddah by a four-day event organized by Ebsar Foundation for Low Vision and Blind Rehabilitation.
This year’s World Sight Day was on Oct. 9, and it focused on the aging eye and preventing vision impairment. The Ebsar Foundation hosted a celebration titled “Eyes on the Future: Fighting Vision Impairment in Later Life” in Jeddah Oct. on 18-21. Opening ceremonies took place at the Sheraton Hotel. Eye doctors, researchers, healthcare professionals, and vision impaired individuals and their families were among those in attendance. The event included programs, workshops and activities designed to raise
awareness about visual impairments, prevention and treatment methods. Ebsar co-founder and general manager Mohammad Towfik Bellow said people in the Middle East are at a high risk for visual impairment and eye diseases. “In order to avoid preventable blindness in our country and in the Middle East, we should take advantage of this international event and spread knowledge about the dangers of eye diseases,” Bellow said. Bellow himself was diagnosed with a degenerative vision condition 20 years ago. After traveling to the United States for evaluation and rehabilitation to cope with blindness, Bellow was inspired to establish a similar service back home. Dr. Akef AlMaghrabi, chairman of Magrabi Eye and Ear Group co-founded the center with Bellow at Jeddah’s Magrabi Eye Hospital in 2001. Within three years, the center expanded to become the first Arab foundation to train specialists to serve the visually impaired. World Sight Day is the main advocacy event for “VISION 2020: The Right to Sight”, a global effort by the IAPB (International Association for the Prevention of Blindess), part of the World Health Organization.

EVENTS & HAPPENINGS
Arabian Trophy 2008: The Arabian Trophy is the successor the Abha Trophy that was held successfully in the Aseer province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia until 2007. Relocated to the area around Taif the first edition of the new competition was held for over six days from 26th to 31st October 2008. This is my personal reminiscence. The first two days were desert stages starting from Shagshan Mountain to an overnight bivouac in the Seydar Desert and continuing to the Camel Race Field the following day. The course profile for both these days showed gently rolling terrain after a short descent from the mountain but there was nothing easy about these stages. Many sections of the track were covered in deep sand making pedalling a serious challenge particularly on the second day. The terrain was quite featureless which made it quite mentally challenging in that there were no landmarks to aim for. It was very interesting to bivouac in the desert and we enjoyed a stunning sunset from a neighbouring rocky outcrop before being entertained by local musicians and dancers. After a comfortable night back at The Intercontinental Hotel in Taif, the third day was a beautiful transitional stage from and back to the Tamalah School, whose children saw us off. 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The fourth day was the first truly mountainous stage from Jalardah to another bivouac at Bagrana. Although the stage predominantly featured long climbs and descents, ten kilometres of sandy tracks from the start reminded us that we were in the Desert Kingdom.
A quick trip back to the hotel to wash and pack and we were off to Jeddah to a poolside reception hosted by HRH Prince Khaled Al Faisal at the Hilton Hotel to recognise the achievement of the winners and thank the sponsors.
The second bivouac was more beautiful than the first and an abiding memory will be falling asleep zipped into my mountain bag watching shooting stars.
A day of sightseeing followed in Jeddah, giving us the opportunity to see the Old Town and a fascinating museum of Saudi Arabian culture, before beginning the journey back to Paris.
The fifth day started before dawn in order to get the next stage under way from Al Shaiera in good time. This was a serious mountain stage of 55 kilometres of long descents and steep climbs in a stunning mountain location that unfortunately proved too much for my bike not to mention my body. So, I decided to abandon at the second feed station. After a good night back at the hotel my spirits were restored and the sixth day was the best day of the competition for me. The technical climbs, descents and fast tarmac sections gave great variety to a relatively short stage.

RELIGIOUS TOURISM
However, according to officials in the Saudi Hajj Ministry it is likely that the fees charged by Tawafa establishments on foreign pilgrims are expected to make the religious ritual more difficult as they increase for the first time in 30 years. As for local Hajj operators, fees are to remain the same with little or none of them offering special packages this year. The reason, Uthman Ali Uthman Aghili, from Al Ferdaus Company, a Hajj and Umrah operator in Jeddah’s Safa District said is that inflation in the Kingdom has practically made its mark in terms of price increases on everything this year from food and water to hotel accommodations, to transportation costs. “Instead of raising fees in light of added costs like international Hajj service providers we are trying to keep regular prices while keeping in mind that we are serving the local community, but at the same time we are trying to offer comfort, convenience and improved services as part of our packages. This year we are offering air-conditioned transportation, large gathering tents with available media services such as satellite TV and Wi-Fi internet connections. This allows pilgrims to stay in touch with family back home during the religious journey, in addition to educational 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH

On the subject of improvements, the Kingdom’s Hajj Ministry, aware of the needs of millions of pilgrims coming from both domestic and international destinations to visit the Kingdom for Hajj this year has been in the process since earlier last year in carrying out the largest ever expansion of the Masjid Al Haram in Makkah. In spite of the fee increases, this year’s pilgrims will enjoy more space and a speedier implementation of Sa’y, which is the re-enactment of the seven times Hajjar, wife of Prophet Ibrahim, ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa in search of water for her son Zakariah amidst the dry desert sun. The area is being expanded from 29,400 square meters to an astonishing 87,000 square meters which will increase the number of pilgrims performing Sa’y from 44,000 pilgrims per hour to 118,000 per hour – a three-fold increase. Among other new improvements to this year’s Hajj is the upgrading by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah of air-conditioning to not only the rebuilt portion of the Haram as was the order during the reign of King Fahd but to the entire built –up area of the Haram, an added comfort and convenience to the Kingdom’s honored guests.

Also according to a statement issued last week by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Minister of Health Dr. Hamad bin Abdullah al Manie announced the allocation of SR 100 million for medical services during the Hajj season this year and the mobilization of more than 10,000 male and female employees of the ministry for providing medical services to pilgrims. In addition, a new Hajj service which allows patient inquiries to be made through the ministry of Health website or by a toll free number is being offered at 8002494444. To help combat fraud against pilgrims they have also set up a Hajj service center in Jeddah to allow pilgrims to check on the legitimacy of Hajj operators before allowing them to book services. The service can also be accessed by toll-free nu mber at 8002444480.

FASHION & SHOPPING Once more, the Saudi fashion designer, Fawzeya Nafea, introduced her new collection “The Rose” for Fall 2008, and Winter 2009 to ladies and fans in Bayal Hall, Beirut. Nafea went deep inside the woman’s identity by using plain strong colors like reddish brown, dark brown and gray. Single color designs distinguished this collection and accessories almost disappeared to emphasize more on the sophistication and the simplicity of the garment. Adding a touch of elegance and attractiveness to the feminine look, she worked on cutting out fabrics like silk, satin and diaphanous fabrics, in addition to tucking the waist and chest areas. Most of her dresses had belts because Nafea has always observed the woman’s waist as an important factor to reflect femininity. She worked really hard to introduce variety of designs balanced with her identity and style, and to reflect the different personalities & backgrounds of a woman. 46 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Fishing is one of Jeddah’s oldest industries, and the Red Sea still fuels the port city’s landmark fish market. Bangala fish market is located south of Corniche, across the harbor from the Islamic port of Jeddah. Each morning before dawn, boatloads of fresh fish are delivered to the market’s auction blocks. Fish is auctioned in mass to restaurants, hotels and other local businesses, or sold throughout the day by vendors in the market’s many booths.

Munch Bakery
NEW
by Molly Morris
When Jeddah local Myriam M. Ghandour decided to start a business with her best friend last year, the pair were inspired by hip, funky bakeries in New York and London. Adding their own flair to those business models, the two women opened Munch Bakery on Arafat Street November 3.
Chocolate boxes and books are among the gifts available at the boutique bakery. The new boutique-bakery mixes the charming style of a classic French bakery with the cool decor of modern cafés and boutiques. The glass display cases at the front of the store are packed with a colorful array of fresh-baked goods prepared in the store’s open kitchen. Tables and shelves around the store are stacked with gift boxes and bakery-related books, accessories and knick-knacks. Ghandour said blueberry-raspberry cheesecake and red velvet cupcakes are Munch Bakery specialties, though customers can’t go wrong with any of the shop’s delectable selection of cookies.

Mystery Diners Dining out with family and friends is a weekend tradition for many residents in the Kingdom. Locals have their favorite spots where they gather on Thursdays and Fridays. In this section, we visit and review many favorite restaurants as regular customers. Dining out is a form of entertainment and socializing. We all have our favorite spots. Our Mystery Diner briefs are one way to share what we like and comment on what we would like to see improved. Some places have fantastic ambiance, but the service is less than expected. Many restaurant-goers who leave with less than a good experience pass along that information to others and never return. Our Mystery Diners’ review should help. *This month’s pick is The Manhattan Fish Market on Al Andalus Street. It is a casual dining seafood restaurant, perfect for families. Four of us went for dinner with a healthy appetite. Since the restaurant is elevated over its own open-air garage, parking was a breeze and we got right in.
68 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Ambience - The interior decor was warm and inviting, although the singles section looked small and less appealing than the family section. The restaurant staff was very welcoming and our friendly server offered recommendations as we browsed the menu. We ordered the Manhattan chowder (SR17), fried calamari (SR32), and the Manhattan sampler (SR44). We savored the appetizers with delight, and they disappeared quickly. Food - Our main dishes arrived quickly. We ordered the Manhattan Seafood Platter for two (SR116). The dish included a deepfried fish fillet, calamari, mushrooms and fried shrimp served with chips and garlic rice. The sweet, sticky sauce complemented the sliced prawns. The garlic rice was delicious: non-greasy, firm and very tasty. Although the menu specified that is was a two-person course, three of us shared the meal and ended up overstuffed. This is a must-try for seafood lovers who would like to sample a variety of items.

The Waiter’s Suggestions- Another tasty main course we enjoyed was the perfectly cooked Alaskan pollock and chips (SR46). We also tried the Flaming Platter (SR60). HEALTHY LIVING 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH
General health precautions
during your holy journey
Health plays a major role in fulfilling the requirements of Hajj as the pilgrimage can be physically demanding depending on circumstances prevailing at the time. Sparing no effort in providing all requirements and needs for pilgrims the Saudi Ministry of Health has ensured availability of over SR100 million worth of medicines and medical equipment to seven hospitals and 153 primary health care centres in Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites, as well as a phone-in service — ‘Sahha Zuyuf Al Rahman’ (Health of the Guests of Allah) — to provide Hajj pilgrims with instant health advice. DESTINATION JEDDAH 73
HEALTHY LIVING
However, the pilgrims who are too busy preparing for their journey or immersed in worship, may neglect a very important item to bring along: their health and wellbeing, according to Dr. Assem Itani of Bupa Arabia the leading health insurer in Saudi Arabia.
“Asking one’s doctor or a discussion with someone who has recently performed hajj can help a lot. Advice pertaining to specific health needs is essential to help take preventative measures like getting vaccines against diseases. Moreover, preparations such as bringing one’s medications along are also very important”, said Dr. Itani of Bupa Arabia. “There are many illnesses that hajjis can be exposed to, but there are also many precautions they can take to avoid those illnesses. For example, sufferers of chronic ailments such as a heart or chest condition or diabetes, visit their doctors regularly. In any of these visits, they could inform and discuss with their doctors of their intention to undertake this journey and ask their advice on any special need for them and how to reduce chances of becoming ill.” More than two million people from over 140 countries converge on Saudi Arabia for the Hajj, the journey to the Sacred Mosque in Makkah, a once in a lifetime obligation for all adult Muslims who are physically and financially able. Due to the large number of people at this gathering, certain diseases and respiratory viruses such as meningococcal, influenza and gastrointestinal infections may be more easily spread between people. Travellers may also face a greater risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and physical injuries. All these are preventable.
“The risk of infectious diseases is also important. To prevent outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis among pilgrims, the Saudi authorities now insist that all pilgrims must be vaccinated.” says Dr. Itani of Bupa. “Meningitis is one of the most notorious diseases. I would call it a dreadful, deadly disabling disease - with a very high risk of mortality and disabilities. Pilgrims also need to be aware of the risks of important blood borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C, especially as one of the rites of Hajj is for men to have their head shaved. With sensible precautions, most of these problems should be prevented. Dr. Itani praised the efforts of Saudi health authorities who make very good efforts for spreading information in many channels and languages and providing health facilities to the guests of Allah. The reward of Hajj is great. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that pilgrims should prepare physically for this rewarding but hugely demanding holy journey.

Jeddah’s
Marinas by: Mohannad Sharawi
Luxury real-estate projects are undergoing rapid development in the Middle East, especially among seafront developments and man-made islands. In Jeddah, scores of marinas and waterfront real-estate projects are already underway. Rapid marina development is generating greater numbers of marine sports enthusiasts, and fueling demand for new boats. Private resorts along Jeddah’s northern coast offer the best access to the sea for diving. Visitors to Jeddah can book weekend diving packages with local hotels, most of which offer access to northern beaches by bus. Popular beaches include Al Nakeel Beach, Blue Beach, Sheraton Beach and Al Bilad Beach. At Durrah Marina, there is a half-mile of beach diving available, as well as a harbor through which 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH
boats can reach the outer reefs. Durrah Marina also hosts live entertainment, bazaars, and other activities during Eid and other festivals. The Jeddah Yacht Club is an exclusive marina located in Al Nakheel Village. It is a small marina in south Obhur that hosts some of Jeddah’s most luxurious yachts. Club members take their yachts out on weekends for fishing, diving, or just for cruising and relaxing.

Al-Ahlam Marina is another lavish seafront marina. Al-Ahlam director Abdul Rahman Al Hazmi said the marina boasts the most luxurious moving restaurant on the Red Sea, featuring a beautiful, air-conditioned dining hall with room for 250 guests and often providing live musical entertainment. Boat trips begin at 11:00 p.m. every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Guests are advised to reserve their seat or table at least 30 minutes before departure. Al-Ahlam’s other aquatic recreations include the Dream Falcon, Saudi Arabia’s first and only operating parascending boat. The marina’s floating Crazy Bus is also the first of its kind in the Kingdom, and the DreamMaster boat seats up to 30 passengers for dive trips. Smaller local marinas offer floating dock services for boats and jet skis located along Jeddah’s northern coast, especially on Obhor Creek, 30 kilometers from Jeddah’s city center. The Comeback Kingdom International airlines return to a runway near you as Saudi tourism takes off by Molly Morris
Pack your bags, Saudi globetrotters. International airlines long absent from this region are making a comeback, anxious to take you wherever you want to go, and promising to get you there faster than ever before. DESTINATION JEDDAH 81
TRAVEL TRENDS
It has been about 15 years since Austrian Airlines ended its services in Saudi Arabia. It left the region along with several other airlines after the Gulf War, when the turbulent political climate delayed many flights indefinitely. Now airlines like Austrian are returning to the Middle East, one of the world’s fastest growing regions both in population and tourism potential. Austrian Airlines recently began servicing Riyadh and Jeddah with seven total flights per week. Is this a trend that will take off with other carriers? Definitely, says Amro El-Ghandoor of Attar Travel. Many other airlines have already returned to the Kingdom or will soon. For more than a decade, large airlines like Air France have transported 90 percent of passengers to and from Saudi Arabia, El-Ghandoor said. The arrival of new and returning airlines is great news for customers in the Kingdom, providing more options and encouraging healthy competition between carriers.
“Prices won’t differ much between airlines,” said El-Ghandoor. “But service will. Each airline is trying to provide new and better services to attract customers.” He cited Austrian Airline’s promotion of business class lie-flat sleeper seats as one such service. “The more carriers, the more choices,” he said. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Ernst Leitner, Austrian Airlines’ country manager for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, said his airline has seen an increase in Middle Eastern customers traveling to Eastern Europe. Leitner said the return of airlines like Austrian will benefit not only outbound Saudi travelers, but also local businesses by encouraging tourists to visit Saudi Arabia.
Attar Travel is already flooded with inquiries about tourist attractions here. There is definitely a demand to see Saudi Arabia now that it is increasingly open to tourism, El-Ghandoor said. Many come to see historic sites like Abha, Mada’in Saleh and Taif. In Jeddah, Red Sea diving alone might be enough to keep the tourism industry afloat, but visitors also enjoy the city’s museums, old town (Al Balad), and other attractions. Religious pilgrims will also benefit from the expanding flight options to Saudi Arabia. Especially during Hajj, more flights mean more convenient and comfortable options for travelers to the gateways to Mecca and Medina. Many European Muslims will be able to fly directly from their nearest international airport as more carriers become available to serve them. Everyone benefits from the expanding air service to the Kingdom. Travelers will have more options, airlines will improve through competition, and Saudi Arabia may soon build a reputation as a modern, safe and attractive destination in the world tourism scene.
