1. THESIS 2

Energy Awareness Centre

Biomass Research Generator, Profession Transition Accelerator, Visitors’ Attention Activator. Former Coal Mine ‘Jan Kanty’, Jaworzno, Silesia, Poland

Active coal mines in Poland; before and after the restructuring of the industry in the 1990’s. Over a half of the mines was closed due to being unprofitable and resources depletion.

1. Research and Analysis. Every design process should start with a thorough analysis and research. As all the projects are different, each time different conditions need to be considered. Site, background, figures, requirements - they are all unique for each project, and therefore they should result in unique designs. I believe that this processes are inevitable in order to create powerful designs.

The site in 1990’s. The coal mine was still running in the 1990’s however the planned restructuring of the industry had a great impact on Jan Kanty Coal Mine. Due to Sulphur compounds as well as wrong management the coal mine was closed entirely and sold. The new owner demolished most of the buildings including the sorting and storage units, administration buildings and quality testing units.

The site nowadays. City communication

City relationships.

The diagram is a visualization of communication between the industries and residential areas.

Jaworzno is located on the suburbs of Silesian Agglomeration - The combination of 15 - 20 cities in Silesia.

Today there is only a couple of buildings that remained after the sorting unit demolition in 2004. Of these are the upcast and downcast shafts, the workers canteen, reception and one of the administration buildings. The owner of the site left the buildings without care and apart from the downcast shaft and the canteen that are still being used by miners testing water levels, the buildings are slowly falling apart.

2. Conceptual Design. There is nothing more helpful in the design process than a good idea. In my personal opinion the ideas should come from the analysis and take into account the outcomes of the research. Ideas are a response and the first step into the design. Personally I prefer collages of mixed computer and hand-drawn origin, and simple sketches.

Visitors’ awareness. The 3rd use of the building relates to persons visiting the building. 1. Visitors entrance is located on the side of the railway. 2. While going up the ramp to the visitors’ entrance, visitors experience the building through views towards the planting area, greenhouses and power plants.

3. Process. The analysis and ideas come together in the design process. In the design of the Energy Awareness Centre solutions are based on the known parameters such as overshadowing and requirements such as ventilation and lighting strategies or energy policy. I believe that the design process is a careful continuation of the analysis.

The building is located in Cape Canaveral in complex 34, which was used as a launching point for the rockets. The site is located in a hurricane area.

The lights on the disc are strictly related to the spacing of weather stations and buoys in the sea. Those data collection points are the first stage of hurricane prediction. The collected data is later sent to the technological tower and sent through the disc and read in the human tower

Single family house, Jozefin, Poland. The house has been inherited by a young couple with a child. The aim was to transform the house so that it suits the needs of the new tenants in terms of medern style and comfortable living conditions. Main refurbishements removed some of the interior walls to create an open living space. The porch was added in order to add some entrance space and the terrace was designed. Currently being refurbished.
