Danny (Dong Woo) Kwak ‘Architecture’ without landscape becomes just a building and ‘Landscape’ without architecture becomes wilderness. The relationship between the two is significant yet the two fields neglect each other by thinking architecture as house and landscape as tree. By taking both courses my definition of this relationship can be described as ‘Axes’, Architecture is vertical axis where Landscape is horizontal axis. The horizontal site (background) needs to conjugate with vertical structure (foreground) and the art of this negotiation is where urban design is born.

URBAN CONTEXTUALISM
1 (RMIT Masters Thesis Project) Semester 1 2020
Why has the relation between architecture and context been so antagonistic? This project begins by revisiting architecture’s affiliation with the idea of context. It attempts to unpack the complexities of context to find aspects that are often overlooked by the profession. The project explores alternate methods to revaluate, critique and expand the bubble of Contextualism, it suggests that perhaps the answer lies not in the traditional architectural attitude, rather looks to that of other professions which also associate with the notion of Contextualism. For further details, click here: Urban Contextualism
PROJECT DE-SCALE
1 (RMIT Masters Design Studio) Semester 2 2019
Project De-Scale is located at the south edge of the Melbourne Airport development. De-Scale is primarily a car park, supporting people towards the sports stadium, convention centre and other offices. There are layers of offices and education program above the car park. De-Scale’s boundary is slightly wider but shorter than the RMIT New Academic Street Precinct. De-Scale is to primarily charge the entire master plan, thus it needs to become a point of interest, a landmark, and have physical and visual connection to other developments. For video presentation, click here: Suburban Realism
NEO-GUILD HOUSE
1 (RMIT Masters Design Studio) Semester 2 2018
+Can architecture of contemporary office typology transform into Neo-Guild House? How can the public realm be merged with office environment, bringing clients and business together, in order to create and develop relationship between the two? The key concept of NGH is about creating connection between clients and workers as well as each other and the architecture is acting as a physical hub/platform where you work and communicate and congregate. Yarra Floats?
+The lower Yarra River was the source of life of Melbourne but has been abandoned as the city grew and river polluted. My design is to re-connect people to this place by designing a floating pool on the river. The pool looks like a ship hull with two main compartments, lower tranquil pool and upper party pool. The two contrasting spaces allow connecting with the Yarra in different aspects, under, on and across the river.

Forum Superblock
3 (RMIT Design Studio) Semester 2 2017
+Roman civilisation practiced democracy by using the urban platform called The Forum. The speculative educational campus was designed with this roman tool and on top of this, to make this campus as whole, I’ve used the technique of Superblock. The Picturesque Artifice, meaning that it is a closed form segregated from the rest of the world, by Rowe in Collage City was the main theme driver for this project. This campus is essentially a theme park, where students as citizens and translating public buildings as Urban Artefact, mentioned by Aldo Rossi. In the contrast, classrooms and faculty buildings become private area flexible for transforming into needed function. For further details, click here: Forum Superblock

This park is a public domain cover over the train track, similar to how Federation Square functions. ‘West End Park’ is a place to gather, move through, drawn into and pass around. +Landscape/Architecture design is about spatial design, however, this is only the outcome of more complex non-tangible elements of decision making. What kind of park should this area have? Why are there restrictions on planning permits in this master planning? These are the questions which needs to be solved not only by the stake holders but coming up with mutual agreement with the general public is important and designers can help this by setting up platform of gathering through spatial design.

9 (TU Delft Exchange Program) Theatro Urbano Semester 2 2014
+Landscape architecture is not only about designing open parks but also retrofitting nature element into the urban architecture. ‘Blue Mile’ is node project driven from ‘Put a ring on it’ masterplan and how individual open space can be design to fit into the vision of the overreaching masterplan. A stretch of circulating water/ green park fitted into abandoned prison in Rotterdam ready to change into student apartment.

NH Architects & RMIT University (Practice Research Elective) Semester 01 2019 Urban Metrics: Internal Thoroughfare This project focused on researching the Urban Metrics of internal thoroughfares. Initially we acknowledged there are four hierarchy of movement network typologies in Melbourne CBD, and we are most interested in the bottom tier which is the internal thoroughfare. Our team has undertaken mapping exercise to firstly observe how these thoroughfares create web of pedestrian walkway network within the CBD and ultimately decided on the eight precedents. These are then studied and analysed with the six spatial characteristics to understand what makes a healthy thoroughfare and what to avoid. Lastly, through comparing one precedent with another, our team has come to a suggestive conclusion that can be used to advise the future developers in order to continue the porous terrain of Melbourne CBD.

Landscape Architect at Conzept Landscape Architects Jan 2016 - Mar 2017 +
As a landscape architect, my role was to design landscape and help the client to successfully lodge their application (DA, CC, Construction Tender, S96, S34, Planning Proposal and many more). For this, I had to firstly to communicate with the client and setup a design brief.
+
Then to research the local council’s DCP and try to satisfy the client’s need as much as possible and express my landscape spectrum in the design at the same time.
+
As a working technique, I learned the skill to liaise with clients, architects, engineers, council and others and maintain communication for any amendments needed.
+
My design field in Conzept includes; Public Domain, Apartment, Residential, Commercial Office etc. Development sites are scattered all around NSW region.
