We learn simply by the exposure of living, and what we learn most natively is the tradition in which we live. David P Gardner

Workshop Mapping and Register:TU LOU location:Fujian,China The Fujian tulou displays the local people’s tradition of living together based on blood ties as a big family. It is the only type of large rammed earth buildings in the world, and has “outstanding universal value. These structures are exemplary of sustainable architecture in that they are built of local, natural materials with simple techniques. They have good thermal attributes, with the massive earthen walls to help buffer temperatures. They are obviously built to last, and house many of the necessities for life. And they embody a communal life style that conserves energy and resources; these represent a form of ancient co-housing. A tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular or circular in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 80 families. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these huge peripheral walls which can contain halls, storehouses, wells and living areas, the whole structure resembling a small fortified city. To gain an awareness of the Tulou and its context through multiple lenses,in order to preserve this special space and building culture to future generations. The result of my investigations is interpreted in drawings, models, text and other suitable types of representations. The position of the apartments also allows for good light and ventilation. Resulting from extensive research into the original earth houses as well as the social dynamics of current urbanisation trends in China, the Tulou Collective Housing is a unique experiment in low-income housing and the transformation of ancient heritage to suit contemporary living environments. The parking area needs to be connected to the street, and the homes require sunlight, fresh air and views, thus all apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, amazing views.

What makes cities great is their difference and variety. For me the best public spaces are eccentric, unique and of their time, and they don’t tend toward bland populism. James Corner

Master Plan:water front park Location:Fujian,China The site on the waterfront of Min river at the Fujian Prov. It is primarily influenced by freshwater tidal in the river. The proposed site has been used as refinery far more than one hundred years by degrading the lands history. The entire site needs to be cleaned, decontaminated, and reconstructed to a healthy natural resource. The master plan is redevelopment and remediation design program that addresses environmental, social, economic and aesthetic impacts on the frontage of river to adjacent communities. My goal is to integrate cultural and natural heritage, and provide ecological and scoocial services for citizen, the connection between people and nature by bringing nature, culture, and community together in the city.Fresh water tidal wetland restoration. The restorative plan addresses re-establishment of the frontage of the river as a natural resource by rehabilitation of the pre-existing Natural habitat.Furthermore, mixed manufacture and agriculture transform the economic development type. Extended the existing urban network, connected to the local community.Reuse the local materials as part of the design to save naturla resource. Refinding the frontage river as fresh water tidal marsh.Integrated culture and natural heritage, transfromed the industrical land as solar form, vegetable gardens, ogriculture.Refined the facility as amphitheater to provide outdoor space for public activity.Restore the tidal marshed, daylighing and perennial grassland.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi

Master Plan:valley CITY Location:Yuan,China Hani Valley with a population of close to 1.5 million inhabitants, it is nestled in a narrow and striking Valley at an elevation of 2,000 feet. During the last four years, Hani has experienced one of the greatest environmental and civic transformations. It has become a unique reference of how urban changes can occur despite the most adverse of conditions. We explored new concepts, tools, geometries, and aesthetics for the making of urban landscapes; We also try to explore the symbioses between the treatment of open space and the nature of the built components that bind it; and the value of contextual and cultural nuances as inputs for the design process. we gained a comprehensive understanding of the contextual and cultural conditions of the region of Yuannan during a site visit in February. There, we were able to analyze successful interventions carried out in recent years, evaluate recent design moves, their social impact, and means of implementation.
