Architecture is basically a container of something. I hope they will enjoy not so much the teacup, but the tea. Yoshio Taniquchi
Afgang Semester:VESSEL Lotion:Thy,Denmark Laozi was a philosopher in ancient China. In his Tao Te Ching from the 6th century B.C. he wrote: ”We shape Clay into a vessel, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want. We pierce doors and windows to make a house; but it is the inner space that makes it livable. Therefore, just as we take advantage of what is, we should recognize the utility of what is not.” The emptiness inside the vessel becomes the main interpretative entry point here; the emptiness becomes the stage for a new set of potential relationships and spatial compositions. As an act that creates a void, the aims might be to violate or reveal specific spatial qualities of matter, but the void - free of any previous definition - and thus unable to be defined, is also capable of telling something different or new about its surroundings. Chinese Yin-Yan philosophy considers that in all things on earth contrary forces of nature opposite each other yet also complement each other. Without black, white could not be identified, without solidness, the voids would become meaningless. The most basic expression of spatial design is perhaps the tension between inside and outside, between center and edge, between container and being contained. Beginning with a series of case studies of projects which challenge our understanding of container and being contained in space. My analytical tools have included drawing, mapping, models and film. I have explored the quality of vessel towards a definition which have allowed me to construct architectural space by absence and movement. Based on the material produced in the initial stages of the assignment, I have synthesized the sketching phase work of investigation and experimentation parallel in drawing and model with development of a proposal of an architectural structure in a smaller scale in Bullberg, Thy, Denmark. My site is situated in the dunes by the west coast of Denmark. I have considered the site in regard to human activity, landscape and topography in order to approach the notion of “vessel”. The function of my architectural structure is based on among other things my readings of the site.I have relyed on architectural experiments... on non-stop architectural experiments and phenomenological readings and let these readings become my driving force in my process of my project. The result of my investigations is interpreted in drawings, models, text and other suitable types of representations.

Intention I try to create a sense of place, where the landscape becomes an integral part of the work, where visitor can explore the essence of "Vessel" form previous cases study. It is a walking passage. An exploration passage should house a series of adaptable spaces which would archive and exhibit the transformation, history of the physical geography and local conditions (human and environmental) and culture in Bulbjerg. A-A Section 1:100
It manifests the transition between land and sea. It frames the experience of landscape by movement, you can hear the sound of the distant waves, but you can not see them. You can hear the harsh wind, but you are not exposed to it. The passage is a narrow path that runs along the contour of the dunes and serves both as a course ‘through’ the structure and an organizer of its functions. By multiplying the interfaces between the spaces, the shape I took from the site becomes more functional, catering the needs of structure, an adaption that results in more fluid and organic shapes, in osmosis with its environment. A fluid space and unifying matrix creates links between all of the programs.
B-B Section 1:100
It has an open and light roof, placed on a solid foundation of space dividing concrete walls. It becomes a place for endless exploration, of endless opportunity to see landscape under the notion of "vessel" in different way. A vessel with the capacity to contain and project our experience at the two basic positions (outside in, inside out) by which we

We learn simply by the exposure of living, and what we learn most natively is the tradition in which we live. David P Gardner
Workshop Mapping and Register:TU LOU location:Fujian,China The Fujian tulou displays the local people’s tradition of living together based on blood ties as a big family. It is the only type of large rammed earth buildings in the world, and has “outstanding universal value. These structures are exemplary of sustainable architecture in that they are built of local, natural materials with simple techniques. They have good thermal attributes, with the massive earthen walls to help buffer temperatures. They are obviously built to last, and house many of the necessities for life. And they embody a communal life style that conserves energy and resources; these represent a form of ancient co-housing. A tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified earth building, most commonly rectangular or circular in configuration, with very thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three and five stories high and housing up to 80 families. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these huge peripheral walls which can contain halls, storehouses, wells and living areas, the whole structure resembling a small fortified city. To gain an awareness of the Tulou and its context through multiple lenses,in order to preserve this special space and building culture to future generations. The result of my investigations is interpreted in drawings, models, text and other suitable types of representations. The position of the apartments also allows for good light and ventilation. Resulting from extensive research into the original earth houses as well as the social dynamics of current urbanisation trends in China, the Tulou Collective Housing is a unique experiment in low-income housing and the transformation of ancient heritage to suit contemporary living environments. The parking area needs to be connected to the street, and the homes require sunlight, fresh air and views, thus all apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, amazing views.

Being an architect isn’t only about construction, it’s about creating wide spaces with small spaces. Yannick Heywang
7th Semester:Hybrid Residential Location:Aarhus,Denmark The project of this semester was a hybrid building sited at the aarhus old railway area ,a neighborhood with an extraordinary place of a multi-faceted reality. The building was to consist of 50 % housing were individual units for a created character. Fore the last 50 % each team proposed a program related to the previous site findings and mapping. The building is made of a long tube that is folded upwards, held by two elevator towers. This tube contains Micro units with sizes between 25 to 35 square meters on the inside while it also acts as a surface of a linear park located on its roof. This park has different elements connecting it to the community enter/restaurant in the basement of the building. Moreover does this building act as kind of a parasite taking over the spaces on the roofs of its neighbour buildings incorporating them into its design. By choosing these mentioned public functions the building becomes some sort of a meeting point for the whole community creating spaces where the users can stay longer periods meeting their neighbours and spend time with them. Even though the community centre is situated in the basement, it still connects to the rest of building. The space of community centre stretched up to 12 meters above the ground being confined by a glass box of those dimensions. Social sustainability occurs when the formal and informal processes; systems; structures; and relationships actively support the capacity of current and future generations to create healthy and liveable communities. Socially sustainable communities are equitable, diverse, connected and democratic and provide a good quality of life

Sustainable urbanism Competition:Farm Vertically Location:Beijing,China Vertical farming is cultivating plant or animal life within a skyscraper greenhouse or on vertically inclined surfaces. The modern idea of vertical farming uses techniques similar to glass houses, where natural sunlight can be augmented with artificial lighting. The Mission Vertical Farming Project aims to bring urban agriculture to local communities, adding much needed green space and providing food production education. The project design prototypes are scalable, flexible vertical systems that may be replicated around the world in order to grow food where space is scarce. While the vertical farming wall does not intend to replace traditional farming, it fills a void by bringing food production to sites in communities where there is no ground available to farm. The vertical farming wall will act as a hands-on way to educate the urban community about food production, with the potential of transforming individuals view on fresh produce and where it comes from. We proceed from the principle of the colony, hoping to use a simple method and the least energy to complete the indoor temperature and humidity control, the entire building become a breathing body and provide a suitable environment for the growth of plants and animals actively. Vertical farming 8 main monomers, combined with several small monomers, in order to activate the entire community. New features, new opportunites, scattered throughout the block, through the improvement of the local regions, the whole district can be recovered.might be a potential solution for future!
