EDITORIAL

The Key Challenges in ICT Integration with Education Today everyone is talking about enhancing the scope of modern education through the use of ICT, but it is also true that ICT is by itself a quite recent phenomenon. Most of the landmark developments in ICT that we see around us have been popularised during the last five or ten years. Even something of as much proven value as the Interactive Whiteboards was relatively rare in our educational institutions till about five years ago. We at digitalLEARNING know about the struggle that the education entrepreneurs had to wage for having their ICT solutions accepted by the broader education establishment. The magazine has been in print for last 8 years; 8 years ago, it was only the avant-garde thinkers and the intrepid entrepreneurs who could visualise the magnificent role that ICT could play in education. Now it is an established fact that ICTs greatly facilitate the acquisition and absorption of knowledge, offering developing countries like India unprecedented opportunities to enhance educational systems, and promote literacy in all sections of the society. However, it is not as if all the hurdles in the path of digital education have been overcome. For instance, when students are using the digital tools and the Internet to access educational material, they can be confused due to the multiplicity of resources from which they can gain information. So the role of teachers becomes important. It is teacher who can guide the student to the best possible repositories of education. The current issue of digitalLEARNING is the Annual Resource Guide. The focus of this issue is to celebrate the rise of ICT in education space. We have endeavoured to cover entire array of ICT entrepreneurs who are playing a stellar role in the education space. You will find their profiles and learn about their key achievements. Any talk of ICT in education cannot be complete without having the opinion of the leaders of our schools and higher education institutions. We carry a range of interviews and write-ups that shed light on the progress and also the lack of progress in the implementation of ICT in education. The coverage of Ryan Group of Institutions might be of particular interest to you. We have covered this institution from different angles and we have managed to distil some amazing perspectives on education in general. A key highlight of the issue is the exclusive interview with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit. The provisioning of quality education to all the youngsters in the nation’s capital is a key priority of the Sheila Dikshit government. She has presented a range of ideas through which her government is planning to make the concept of “education for all” a reality. Let me also remind you that the eINDIA, India’s most prestigious ICT event, is scheduled for 15th and 16th November 2012 in Hyderabad. One of the key attractions of the event will be eINDIA education summit, where all the leading stakeholders in the education space will gather to discuss and debate the value proposition that ICT is bringing to the education space. You can even think of the Annual Resource Guide as a precursor to the prestigious eINDIA 2012 event. We hope to see you there rubbing shoulders and exchanging ideas with other thought leaders.

Leader Speak

Digital Roadmap for Education Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi, spoke to Dr Ravi Gupta, Manjushree Reddy and Rozelle Laha, on the major initiatives taken by the Delhi Government to enable children from every section of the society to gain access to quality education

During the past few years many new initiatives have been taken by the government to bring about an improvement in the quality of education that is being offered in our institutions. Please tell us about the nature of the initiatives that have been taken by the Delhi government. Please also shed light on the way you see the actual impact of these initiatives. We have taken several steps. The right to education has served as a big boost to the education. It is enabling many youngsters from financially weaker sections of society to access quality education. We have also made a study of why government schools are doing badly. The pass percentage of students is fairly low, even though we are spending reasonable sums of money on the education of every child. We have setup the Vidyalaya Kalyan Samiti (VKS), a School Welfare Committee, which caters to the needs of the children in the neighbourhood who are going to government run schools. The Committee ensures that the teachers are present in the classrooms and the students have access to quality reading material like textbooks, and that their uniforms are clean. The Committee also receives funds from the government to take care of minor renovations of the classroom infrastructure like repairing of windows, toilets etc. We are also having schemes for providing children with free uniforms, free books. There is also a scheme for providing scholarships to students of SC/ST background.

12

education.eletsonline.com

You midday meals scheme is also leading to many positive outcomes, please tell us about it? The midday scheme is a great success as it has resulted in lot of poor students joining our schools. Midday meals are given to children up to a particular class after that they are not given. However, in a city like Delhi, the fact that our schools teach English and provide new avenues for the students to get good jobs, once they become adults, is the major force attracting students.

Tell us about the schemes that Delhi Government has started for girl children. We found that the girl children were not coming to schools as often as the boys. The government of Delhi has launched the new scheme for protection of the girl child. It is called the ‘Delhi Ladli Scheme.’ The scheme aims to enhance the social status of girl child in the society as well as in the family, ensuring proper education to make the girls self-reliant, ensuring

her economic security and protecting them from discrimination and deprivation. The Ladli scheme has resulted in lot of girls coming to the schools. We have also started the Kishori Shakti Yojna to encourage and facilitate personal hygiene and other qualities in girl children. The Yojna is now serving more than 7 lakh girls in the National Capital Region, and I am glad to say that the number of girl students in our schools is on the rise. Many children from poor families depend on the government run institutions for all their educational needs? What steps are you taking to bring about an improvement in the quality of education being offered in such institutions? We have several monitoring mechanisms in place to ensure that the quality of education in our government aided or run institutions is up to the mark. It is not necessary that the poor students should depend only on the government schools. We have arrangements in place to ensure that even the best schools have to have certain number of children from poor families. The government is also giving aid to some schools to enable them to cater to the needs of poor children.

14

education.eletsonline.com

Can you enumerate the reasons due to which the ICT infrastructure in government schools is not quite up to the mark? I agree that the infrastructure can be made much better. The Delhi government is funding the deployment of ICT in schools, but we are not able to achieve the best possible results as the teachers are not well trained. So we are now trying our best to educate the teachers in the usage of new technologies. We are working hard on this issue, and we are going to succeed in creating the best possible ICT infrastructure for our children. The Delhi government is also trying to rope in private companies through PPP models for the installation of ICT in our institutions. It is a good thing that the number of students in our schools has gone up. However, after passing 12th, the same students start aspiring for higher education. But the country continues to face a great crunch of higher education seats. How are you planning to solve this problem? Also when it comes to teaching vocation skills to the students, what is your strategy? The government is focused on enabling many more higher education institu-

tions to come up. It is also true that not every student wants to go to the university. Many of them want to do courses like Hotel Management, Tailoring, Electrician training, and much else, so vocational education is also the need of the hour. We already have lot of universities and vocational training centres in the city, but they are clearly not proving to be enough, because as you have said in the question, the demand for quality education is rising all the time. Many States like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have opened their gates for private universities. Is there any strategy for doing the same? We are definitely trying to encourage private investments in education. We already have Amity University. Lot of private schools are also there. The Delhi Government is totally dedicated to fulfilling the educational needs of all the boys and girls who live in the national capital region. If private investments can lead to the creation of quality institutions for learning, then such institutions have to be encouraged. Our major agenda is to reform the system of education so that our students are able to reap the full benefits of latest technologies, courses and teaching techniques.

Education and Social Responsibility

Dr Augustine F Pinto Founder - Chairman, Ryan International Group of Institutions

“A nation will be known by its people and the people will be known by their education and culture.”

G

lobalisation has brought sweeping economic and technological changes in society. This has had seminal impact on the education system around the world. Over the years education has undergone tremendous changes, however today there is a growing demand for quality Holistic Education. Every educator therefore has a great responsibility to integrate the internationally recognised and well researched concepts and trends in curriculum to equip students for the future that is unexplored. Educators must understand that there is a need to develop global citizens for more humane and sustainable world. Education should not merely prepare the young generation for employment, it should also equip them for life. Students must learn the art of becoming lifelong learners and to be catalysts of change in the world. The educational experiences must provide young generation the information and tools to understand what is happening in the world and how it affects lives. Education should develop students with global consciousness needed to support human rights and ecological sustainability. There are numerous issues such as

16

education.eletsonline.com

global warming, environmental degradation, war, conflicts, terrorism, racism and so forth in the world today. Education therefore at all levels has a significant role to play in preparing young minds to promote peace, to prevent conflict and to bring about human development. Educators and policymakers have to find ways and means to translate these aspects into curriculum to provide the students competence and skills to understand the global issues and be the agents of peace and harmony in society and world at large. The scope for growth is tremendous. However, the progress of our nation will largely depend on the quality of education, which must be of global standards to bring about economic and social development. India is one of the biggest human resource suppliers in the world and if we as educators want to create world class global organisations to produce application-career oriented world class citizens, we first need to create an environment that encourages strong emphasis on hands-on-projects, experiential learning, problem solving, and critical thinking through collaborative and cooperative learning. Collaborative approach that includes academic rigour combined with strong experiential learning is the key and integration of ICT is deemed necessary for future employability and successful careers. Our generation of children should be helped to grow intellectually, emotionally, physically, spiritually and socially. The Biblical proverb rightly states, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he shall not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). As educators we need to make every possible endeavour for developing responsible and employable global citizens for a better world.

tudents of Ryan International School, Greater Noida participated in the Global Point Of View Project organised by Green Contributor and University of Erlangen, Nuernberg. The project was on the topic climate change in your region with participants from three countries i.e India, Germany and U.S.A. The project was conducted in three phases: 1. Getting to know each other- Students from the different countries prepared introductory videos and interacted on Facebook. 2. Working on the problem- Students identified the climatic problems in their region and figured out the causes for the problem and put the matter in a power-point presentation. 3. Discussing the problem worldwide- After preparing the presentation, the students exchanged their presentation and discussed the problems over the online discussion portal ‘Lo-Net2.de’ 4. Planning concrete actions- Students from the different countries after going through the Climatic problems of all regions together formulated some steps to be implemented to eradicate the problems. The students of Ryan International School, Greater Noida always had a realisation about the deteriorating condition of the Global environment and they enthusiastically participated in the project with a desire to make a small positive change in the environment. The key idea was to sensitise students to look at global problems from various perspectives. The project involved studying issues, discussing/debating them, understanding differing perspectives/concepts of cooperation and brainstorming for solutions. Living in the National Capital Region, Ryan students found that the most prominent climatic problem was the flooding of the river Yamuna and shared their presentation with the students of other participating countries like Zambia and together formulated some measures to eradicate the problem. They realized that the main cause was increasing global warming. As an extension to this project the students also participated in a project called the ‘Marine Project’ with a motive to save the water bio-diversity. Shrishti Gupta of Ryan International School, Greater Noida got the opportunity to visit the Algalita Marine Center, California, USA as a part of this project. ryan group interview

Creating Socially Responsible Leaders At Ryan, we follow a very simple, profound philosophy – excellence in education and all-round development. We manage to make a ‘difference,’ because besides being spiritual, and value-based, we also have a commitment to ensuring child-centred pedagogy. We believe in providing holistic development to the child... Please tell us about the growth story of Ryan Group of Schools. What motivated the Founder Chairman, Dr Augustine F Pinto, to start this venture? Nearly three decades ago, our Founder Chairman, Dr A F Pinto, was motivated to begin a school. He was pas-

sionate about enabling every child in the country to have access to quality education. He was also inspired by the fact that there was a growing demand for schools in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. The whole idea was to equip children with life skills, which enable them to face challenges of a chang-

ing world and empower them to be socially responsible leaders, who stay focused in spite of the many trials on various fronts. Joining him on this learning journey was a natural progression considering it is hardly possible to be untouched by his visionary leadership.

ryan group

Future plans of Ryan Group • Integrate technology appropriately to facilitate the teaching learning process. Invest in leadership and teacher development and training. • Focus on pedagogical leadership in our schools for better learning outcomes. • Support the cause of sports, social service and love for the nation. • Be the prime choice for parents who aspire for better education for their students.

and act ahead to enable preventive action as far as possible. Like all segments, education also has its positives and areas of concern. Today as the education sector has been privatised, there is a whole lot of competition. It is becoming increasingly important to stay ahead in this segment of education and innovate and be progressive in approach. The approach has to be fine tuned with the changing trends in global education and leadership.

The last three decades, the Ryan Group has grown to be a large network of over 120 K-12 institutions in 15 states of India and overseas. We began our first CBSE School in Delhi region in 1991. While we acknowledge our LORD, we are also grateful for the people He blessed us with – the various stakeholders both within and outside of our school community, starting with our dear students, the staff, our parent community, those behind the scenes, and our well-wishers. We are a testimony of His grace being sufficient, as we have sought doing our best in offering quality holistic education to the children of our nation. What were the key challenges that you faced while setting up the brand? Challenges are meant to strengthen character and as such the nature of the challenges we have faced have only caused us to stay grounded and rooted in values and our faith. The challenges were varied and complex in nature and largely a result of misperception. It has been a good and humbling experience to be in the lifelong learning mode- “learning from and for life” while in leadership. Apart from that the key for us to succeed has not just been to learn from our experiences, but also to anticipate

What are the opportunities that you found and what are your strengths? We have learnt firsthand that every challenge presents an opportunity to learn and grow, and learn again. Every experience whether good, bad or ugly has posed as an opportunity for us to learn anew and march forth. Since the vision is clear to us, we aspire for our efforts to be aligned with the vision of encouraging “all round development.” Thankfully perception about what truly constitutes education is evolving and we are grateful to our parent community for embracing change over time and being more receptive to arts being integrated in the educational process. Our activities reflect the understanding that the key task in imparting quality education also involves pursuing sustainable development in the economy, ecology and social well being of all. Although an incredibly challenging journey, the opportunity of meeting the educational needs of the nation has been humbling experience. However, we can say that we have achieved a lot within a short span of time as we now cover a large part of the country and have also spread our wings globally. Our strength is Christ and the hope He offers each day to enliven and make a difference to every person, thus investing long term in the nation’s wealth (our students). What distinguishes Ryan from the other group of schools? At Ryan, we follow a very simple, profound philosophy – excellence in education and all-round development. We manage to make a ‘difference,’ because besides being spiritual, and value-based, we also have a commitment to ensuring child-centred pedagogy. We believe in providing holistic development to the child. Our objective is to nurture children, so that they not only excel academically, but become empowered citizens with life skills to thrive. schools, encouraging sports and extracurricular activities at the state, national and international levels. Ryan Group has been recorded more than 8 times in the Limca Book of Records in various academic and extra-curricular activities. We have launched world-level events like Indian Model United Nations (INMUN), International Children’s Festival of Performing Arts (ICFPA) and IAFA (Iceplex Ad Film Awards) amongst many others which provide international exposure to our students. Since our approach is also to provide hands-on learning experience for children, especially in sports we have collaborated with the best in the industry like Mahesh Bhupathy for tennis, Baichung Bhutia for football and Vishwanathan Anand for chess to bring world-class coaching to our children. Transcending the territorial limits, Ryan has opened wide the doors for exchange of ideas and multicultural learning experiences to our future citizens to explore the potentials of an international interface. Values with sound knowledge and the wisdom to use it constructively provide the differential factor to our students at Ryan. The Indian government has come up with the policies like Right to Education (RTE) & Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE). What are your perspectives on this? While there is reasonable focus on higher education, there is dire need for systemic reform in the area of secondary and primary level education. Moreover, teacher and leadership training and development deserve attention if the lives of our future leaders and global citizens are going to be shaped by them. The well being of millions of children who are waiting to be brought under the influence of education largely depends upon the easy access to their Right to Education (RTE) while studying the most feasible way to do so. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, which has been introduced in recent past is getting implemented across all streams of School Education, and it covers all aspects of student’s development with both Formative and Summative Assessment. CCE helps in improving

Transcending the territorial limits, Ryan has opened wide the doors for exchange of ideas on multicultural learning experiences. The idea is to enable our future citizens to explore the potentials of an international interface

student’s performance by identifying his/ her learning difficulties at regular time intervals right from the beginning of the academic session and employing suitable remedial measures for enhancing their learning performance. CCE has already been implemented in all our schools. Introduction of ERP in the school will definitely improve the CCE system at large. This also empowers students with selfassessment. Our schools have been at the forefront of adopting innovations and modern practices to ensure that there is a continuous enhancement in the overall quality of teaching and learning. Over the last three decades Ryan has been serving the cause of providing quality education and it will continue to spread quality education in all corners of the country. The traditional system of education is undergoing a change by introducing digital methods of teaching. So how proactive has the school been in accommodating such methods of teaching? ICT has in fact attracted attention of academia, business, government and communities to use it for innovative profitable propositions. 21st century is characterised by the emergence of knowledge based society wherein ICT plays a pivotal role. As the importance of digital pedagogy in school education is being highlighted, and being aware that children are very comfortable with modern tech-

nology, we have already incorporated the ICT tools to enhance the learning experience amongst our students. Most of our schools are affiliated to ICSE, CBSE and IB-IGCSE and understandably ICT is part of the academia. Besides ICT being one of the regular subjects, we have facilitated and partnered in the creation of various technology platforms like myschool.in.com to enhance communication and learning experience. We are in the process of working with some leading entities in this space to enhance the usage of digital methodology in our schools. Ryan was among the first group of schools to include computer education in the curriculum, way back in the early 1990’s. We in the process of understanding the feasibility of digital books for our staff and students and believe in embracing change, using it to make education more engaging and meaningful. Our schools are established to develop academic and overall development of the students and encourage any effort that helps us do this effectively. What is your vision for the Ryan Group of Institutions? Ryan has been at the forefront of changing the paradigm of education. We are now gearing ourselves up for the next level of growth. We hope to leverage technology in offering quality education to inaccessible parts of India and enable the children to benefit from high quality English medium education.

he Indian education system is one of the largest systems in the world. It caters to the need of more than 190 million students of different socioeconomic backgrounds in pre-primary to primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary to college and university level. Though rapidly improving, India still has a long way to go. To provide our students with the talents necessary to compete in this marketplace, we must recognise and accept the challenges before us today. Ryan way is defined as KASSM — Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, Social and Morals. Values with sound knowledge and the wisdom to use it constructively is what provides the differential factor to our students at Ryan. Teachers are no longer the only source of knowledge. We have moved on from teaching to facilitating. Teaching today in India is not what it used to be. There is a fundamental change in the way teaching works today. Teaching is about enabling learning from a conceptual point and its application in real life. The methods of imparting knowledge are no longer confined to a chalk and board but have extended to advanced technology and virtual learning. The gap between students and teachers has narrowed giving learning a totally new perspective. The need of the hour is to build the social infrastructure of the country, hence people should give more importance to academia, healthcare, education while other career options could be mass media, finance, legal and compliance and arts. There is a wide gap between what is taught in schools or colleges and what is actually required in the real world. This gap needs to be closed and institutes should only focus on imparting relevant education. In other words pedagogy and the tools for pedagogy both have to be reviewed from time to time. digitalLEARNING / october 2012

Beyond

Several National & International events like the Indian Model United Nations (INMUN), International Children’s Festival of Performing Arts (ICFPA) and IAFA (Indian Ad Film Awards) amongst many others are regularly organized at Ryan to provide opportunities for leadership and all round development

Indian Model United Nations Fast facts: Inception: 2001 Participants: Over 800 student delegates from about 120 schools from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia

The level of debate and hard work, exhibited by other student delegates, is very high. The entire experience is highly encouraging and memorable

Sampurna Basnet, Ritambhara Parcyuli & Garima Golcha (Students), Rato Bangala School, Nepal, Kathmandu

The Concept of Indian Model United Nations was initiated by the Founding Chairman, Dr. Augustine F. Pinto and Managing Director, Madam Grace Pinto, Ryan International Group of Institutions through their sustained efforts and commitment towards rich quality education. Their vision has provided a platform to the young citizens to debate on various issues that plague the world. The MUN concept is a student run simulation of the United Nations. Students delegates representing various UN member nations address specific issues of importance in the global arena. Through debate and negotiations, student delegates attempt to resolve regional and international problems.

26

education.eletsonline.com

They are expected to do this in a conciliatory manner to the fullest of their nation’s interest. They learn to embrace the spirit of the UN charter. MUN conferences provide students with the opportunity of playing the role of diplomats involved in decision making and conflict resolution at the UN. Students not only learn about the UN system, but also find out about economic, social and environmental issues pertinent in today’s world. Students learn to resolve these problems through negotiations and compromise. In order to do this they are expected to develop skills of independent research, oration, resolution writing and collaboration. As students take on the role of inter-

national diplomats, they have to put their own views on one side and embrace the foreign policy of the nation which has been assigned to them. It gives the students an opportunity to develop critical thinking and to know the current state of the world, and also of future possibilities and solutions. Students also learn about the conduct of foreign meetings and the use of parliamentary procedure. The Ryan International Group also encourages its students to attend such conferences organized by other countries. Ryan Students have been attending Colombo Model United Nations, Sri Lanka, Model United Nations of the Far West San Francisco, USA, Iberian Model United Nations, Portugal & National Model United Nations, New York, USA. Students have attended MUN sessions at New International School of Thailand, Bangkok, Garden International School, Malaysia and The International School of The Hague, Holland.

yan believes that performing arts is a sensitive, creative and liberal medium of expression for children and it helps to establish a bond of friendship and cooperation among nations. Politics and religion divide people, but art and culture unite them – the truth of the statement is brought home through varied theatrical performances. Irrespective of language, performing arts has a universal understanding through body language and facial expressions through which actors express various human emotions like indignation, ecstasy, envy and excitement. The main aim of International Children’s Festival of Performing Arts (ICFPA) is to create an international platform for young people to perform, unite, exchange ideas and explore the medium of dance, drama, puppetry and various other genres of performing Arts. The focus is interaction, improvisation, play and discussion among the participants. The festival spread its roots far and wide, with more Asian, African and European countries joining us year after year. “Our School Gives Great Importance to Teacher Development” In 1957 an ageing lady decided to acquire the small estate of an erstwhile Nawab to start a boarding school for young Indian girls. There were no funds, no staff, and no school buildings. Yet Miss Oliphant refused to give up her mission. She entrusted the task of setting up and running the school to Miss Grace Mary Linnell who became the Founder-Principal. ‘Nasreen’, the large bungalow of Nawab Saiduzzafar, was transformed into Welham, named after a Welsh village. Over the last 50 years, the school has added to its campus piece by piece and has come to symbolise independence, high standards and a progressive attitude. At the same time, from its inception, Welham has focused on developing in its students pride in Indian culture and awareness of national and global issues and concerns.

The CCE consists of Formative Assessment (FA) and Summative Assessments (SA), which are conducted throughout the year and it has received mixed response from the teachers’ community. What is your opinion on CCE in schools? One good effect of CCE has been that schools are compelled to look at their children a bit more holistically than merely as numbers and marks. I am a believer in formative assessment, though I do not know if I agree with summative evaluation of personal qualities and achievements. After all, each child is a work in progress. I believe that evaluation is worthwhile only if it is accurate, thought-through and sincere, and leads to change and improvement in the identified areas of weakness and strength. Here again, we cannot put the cart before the horse. First of all, all schools must be able to provide opportunities to the children to develop in all curricular and extra-curricular areas, only then is it worthwhile to assess their abilities and attainments in these areas. This means that schools must first have the teachers and the spaces to provide these opportu-

42

nities for learning and growth. Certainly, a brief assessment and suggestions on how to improve can help a child to grow well. But it is both difficult and artificial to have to assign a value (a mark or a grade) to each quality and talent and effort over so many years of a child’s stay in school. Must we have the tyranny of marks and grades for everything? In our country, it is the large numbers which prove to be daunting and systems which are introduced with the best of intentions can become mere formalities, through no one’s fault. Given the huge numbers in day schools, this means that the teacher is largely reduced to doing endless clerical work. How has training being imparted to the teachers on a continuous basis? Our school gives great importance to teacher development. We have an annual programme for teacher development. Teacher workshops are held at the beginning of each term on different areas of education, and the school invites trainers both from India and abroad. We also encourage in-house workshops where teachers share their own learn-

ing methods with colleagues in a formal setting. The school is affiliated with the Dehradun Teachers’ Centre at the Doon School and teachers attend and conduct workshops there. Teachers also attend the subject-related workshops conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate to which we are affiliated. Senior staff has also conducted workshops for the Council from time to time. Teachers are encouraged to apply for schemes such as the Fulbright Teaching Exchange. They are given considerable freedom in the classroom for developing their own methods. Teachers are a completely involved and are an active component of the school’s outward-bound programmes (tours, treks and visits in India and overseas) and communityservice programmes. These offer a great learning for teachers too. How do you see the role of Information and communication technology (ICT) in pedagogy and administration? No one can deny the impact of ICT in education. It can be a very effective tool in pedagogy and of course, it is very useful in administration – one hardly needs

interview

to elaborate on that. You have asked about the level of ICT implementation in our school. Well, we are all linked on a LAN, we have 24-hour fast broadband internet, we are all computer ‘savvy’, our laboratories and subject rooms are all smart classes, our daily operations are automated, we have a working ERP, students and teachers are quick and efficient with multimedia and we work off a central server on a Student Information System customised for our school. It helps the people within a school and within the education community to be in quick touch with each other and share global resources and practices at the click of a key. However, I feel that an electronic interface must never be the medium of choice where a human interface is essential. In the lives of school-going children and their teachers and parents high-tech must not replace high-touch. It can best be an add-on to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

of matter. Generally many students do not fare very well in these tests. If they are administered in the correct way, then they could be introduced at the higher secondary level only. However, they have to be very well thought out and the assessment and outcomes also need to be worked out in detail. Otherwise they will be of little benefit to students. Given that there exists a wide variety of textbooks being used by students all over the country, I cannot see that these tests can be implemented very soon. If only one book is studied by all, the system will become self-limiting. What is your vision for the school 2020? The school will continue to upgrade itself in methodology and infrastructure in line with the requirement of the times, yet endeavour to retain its basic principles of Indian-ness, which can be expressed in these three words - Equality, Simplicity and Service.

Teachers need to constantly upgrade themselves. ICT has made this easily possible. As I said earlier, Teachers and Thought-leaders can share research and learning and methodologies and information very easily. Audio-Visual presentations make pedagogical transactions attractive and meaningful. However, increasingly I find that children can visually recognise much more than we could in our childhoods, but they have less and less vocabulary and expression in which to speak about what they have seen! Language skills have definitely declined. Children can make a good video, but they can’t write an essay that well. Inspired from US and UK, the Indian HRD Ministry is planning to introduce open book examination system for class X and class XII CBSE students from next year with the objective to do away the rote learning system. Please share your view of the new emerging trend. Open book tests all over the world are generally much tougher than regular tests. Given that the basic information is with the students, they test much higher order thinking skills than regular tests, than mere understanding and assimilation

Fusion of

www. fusioninternationalschool.org

Technology, Teaching and Innovation Recently Shri Ajay Maken, Sports Minister, released the report on National Physical Fitness Programme (NPFP), under which school children across the country get rated for physical fitness. What is your opinion of the role that sports and physical education play in the overall development of a child? It is important to introduce physical education as a part of our curriculum. Fusion International School has already been doing this. We have a specific programme for physical education in our school. The height and weight chart is maintained for all the students and marked in the progress card. The obese students are given exercise schedule for a period of ten minutes during the lunch break. Healthy snack and lunch is advised and the Tiffin boxes are monitored. Parents have appreciated our programme and the 15 percent students have fallen in to the acceptable weight category weight within two months of time. The programme draft released by Shri Ajay Maken is very important and feasible enough to be included in the schedule. The term Physical Training is well to be replaced by the term Physical Education. There should not be a second thought about introducing this program into the curriculum. In your opinion what are the advantages of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) over traditional practices? This is an excellent way of evaluation, because it facilitates education through

involvement of the child into the education process, rather memorising. Traditional practice allows a student to score better where he can memorise with ease. Memory plays a vital role in traditional processes of education, however, in CCE, an understanding of the subject is the key. Teachers have to ensure that their students are firmly grounded in the subject. To make the implementation happen, the leaders in schools have to play a vital role and guide the teachers in planning their work. Duplication of work can be avoided if the teacher develops a format to grade the students. The lesson plans can suitably be prepared to give enough space for grading the students according to CCE. How do you see the role of Information and communication technology (ICT) in pedagogy and administration? Many students find it easier to understand their curriculum when they have access to technologies like Smart Boards, YouTube, and Internet. It is necessary that we adapt new technologies for better tomorrow. However, every field has a loophole. We must endeavour to make ICT user-friendly and a subordinate, rather than being a bad master. For using a technology or a programme, the lesson plans should not become a mere paper work but reflect the teacher’s vision in the classroom. What is the level of ICT implementation in the school? There are smart boards, which facilitate

better connectivity for the students and teachers. However, the smarts boards are only a teaching aid, they cannot be a substitute for teaching. When teachers are committed to their work, teaching becomes a great inspirer for students. Great team work and planning is needed to club up the classes for a common module. Emails to the parents have always been there, but this has made the curriculum very transparent. How has training being imparted to the teachers on a continuous basis? Every Saturday, workshops are conducted on micro matters, like preparing the question papers, vetting them along with the teachers, guiding them while giving presentation to the parents during orientation programs. In line with CCE, teachers also have to continually upgrade their programmes and work. What are the future plans of the school? We see ourselves as a school of tomorrow. Our school has started implementing the Multiple Intelligence Theory. We are trying to understand the emotional aspect of content. We are constantly upgrading the ICT infrastructure at the school. Students will have access to a range of devices and systems for accessing knowledge and information from all parts of the world. We wish to be the part of the creative world; we wish to have vibrant exchange programmes with students from other countries. digitalLEARNING / october 2012

Share with us the idea from which the concept of Genesis Global School has germinated. The culture of the holistic residential schools has been brought to Delhi through Genesis School. The residential schools are known for the variety of sporting activities that they provide to children. In this regard, Genesis provides a choice of 21 different sporting activities to the children. Special emphasis is laid on the laying of the surfaces on which these activities are done. The school has turf pitch for cricket, maple wood sprung floor for squash, clay and synthetic courts for tennis. The school has two swimming pools of 50 metres and 25 metres. The school has paid utmost attention to detail so that the sporting facilities provided by the school are of international standards. The school has proper coaches and trainers for teaching all sports activities so that the children learn the right techniques and have a thorough understanding of the sport that they are learning. Various academies in association with the best sporting institutions have been set up in the school. Genesis also employs industry experts to teach all kinds of co-curricular activities to the children. Please provide us with your opinion on the ways by which ICT is brining benefits to the students and teachers in the school? The school believes that the teacher cannot be replaced in the schools as she is the provider of education to the children. ICT tools are the medium to help teachers provide better education. The school has smartboards in all classes and content has

64

been taken from various vendors and the best and useful content has been used to deliver education. Genesis also provides an opportunity to students to actively participate in robotics and astronomy activities. The next big change in Genesis will come in the form of usage of tablets in classrooms. The school is all set to replace books with tablets. Please highlight the Genesis School’s collaborations with foreign schools The school has collaborations with Clifton School in UK and the Ermitage School in France. The teachers from these schools come to Genesis School and conduct teacher training programmes. Teachers are also sent to these schools so that they can see and learn the working of these schools. The teachers then come back enriched about the methodologies of these institutes. Children are also encouraged to visit these foreign schools. Modern United Nations has also become an important forum where children participate and enrich their knowledge. The school is a member of the Round Square, which is a group of about seventy schools. The children go and participate in various Round Square meetings. Various exchange programmes are set with schools in the USA and Australia under which children from Genesis School visit the schools in these countries to gain vivid experiences. How much emphasis do you give on training of teachers? The school is registered for the IGSC and teachers are going through online training conducted by Cambridge University.

The teachers fulfil the requirements of the training and submit the assignments online. The teachers then get certifications for this training from Cambridge. Please throw some light on future Plans of Genesis School There are four new buildings under construction in the school. A dining hall that can accommodate 1500 children, a six hundred sitting hall for 600 students and a boarding house that can accommodate 500 children in the school will be ready by December 2012. A new junior school is also being constructed separately. There are plans to construct a middle end school in Mohali and another low-end school in Wave City, in Ghaziabad. How do you see the role of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) in improving education? CBSE has done a commendable job in improving education by introducing CCE pattern of evaluation. The pressure of achieving percentages has been relieved and this is something that enables children to enjoy their childhood. The government has implemented RTE but the level of education available in government schools in the rural areas does not provide quality education to children. Only a few schools in metros can help in achieving the quality of education that the government wants the children of this country to have. The government should take their role seriously in providing primary education by ensuring that good quality teachers remain in rural schools.

Society Should Grow as a Whole and not in Segments “The dividend of large population can only be harnessed through vocational training and skill development,” says Dr Veera Gupta, Secretary, Central Board of Secondary Education in conversation with Rozelle Laha

Please give us an overview of your ideas on learning environment. Learning consists of acquisition (input) and disposition (output) of concepts through written or non-written work. The best method for acquisition of concept is experiencing it. Most of the times, it is not possible to expose an individual to these concepts for acquisition through experiential methods. Similarly, it is not possible for an individual to translate the acquired concept into action. Therefore, most of the learning situations are not real. Learning environment is based on symbols of concepts. The most popular symbols are language. Language became a medium for acquisition as well as depiction. It has been found that symbol acquisition is arduous and also inadequate measure for acquisition as well as disposition. The educationists tried to include real world situation but did not have any other means for teaching and learning besides the use of paintings, drawing, sculpture and drama. What is the impact of ICT on education? With the advent of ICT, the concept ac-

quisition and delivery has been made easy. With the help of ICT a person can acquire concepts without converting them into symbols. Besides that, ICT also makes it possible to acquire unlimited concepts which cut across space, time and subjects fields. It is believed that society has to grow as a whole and not in segments. If only one segment of the society is developed, but rest of the segments are not, it cannot be called developed society. It is believed that all the segments have to reach a particular level of growth for the betterment of the society. What kind of benefits can ICT bring to the education sector in India? The use of ICT makes it possible to deliver the concepts to larger segment of society in less time and cost. The benefit of ICT over traditional method are manifold and beyond any doubt. The use of ICT would help educational planners to achieve target of universal education and enhanced enrolment in the institutions. The ICT would help teachers to impart knowledge with less effort. The use of ICT would help evaluators with accurate and speedy as-

sessment of learning. The ICT is part and parcel of educational environment. What is the lacunae in vocational training and skills development sector in India? The dividend of large population in our country can only be harnessed with the help of vocational training and skill development. There have been plans/ schemes for upscaling vocational education in the country. Most of the schemes have focussed on increasing enrolment in vocational courses, designing new curriculum, developing learning material and training teachers. The need is to certify the acquisition of vocational learning. The certification process requires ‘certified certifiers’. At present vocational training is not a part of formal system of education. Most of the acquisition of vocational skills is happening outside the formal structure of educational system. There is an urgent requirement to consolidate this learning by way of providing credits equivalent to formal education system. What is the biggest challenge before educationists today? The biggest challenge before the educational planners is how to recognise credits given outside the education system. Who is authorise to give such credits? One of the strategies to meet this challenge is to focus on certification of credit givers. The educational planners and administrators have to venture out of the boundary of formal education system for doing so. The work should focus on recognizing the skill provider, his tools, processes and certification method. The focus needs to change to acknowledge and ‘Certify the Certifier’ for growth of vocational education in the country. The ICT can play an important part by way of standardising tools, maintaining assessment data and in transfer of credit. digitalLEARNING / october 2012

A Digital Paradigm for Higher Education

The Way Ahead By Rozelle Laha, Elets News Network (ENN)

S

olutions from ICT are emerging as the answer, largely because stakeholders in the education space see such technologies as an efficient and cost-effective way of enhancing the scope, reach and also the relevance of education. When it comes to the actual implementation of ICT in our institutions, there is lot of debate happening about the best way forward. It will take lot of time before textbooks are entirely replaced by their digital versions. There are issues like absence of motivation in some teachers regarding new technology, lack of basic infrastructure in the institutions. The digitisation of

72

education.eletsonline.com

textbooks is also an issue, it will take time before texts are replaced by digital versions or are supplanted altogether by courseware aggregated from a variety of online and off-line resources. However, despite all the pitfalls, we are moving towards a world where students will learn at their own pace through Internet-connected devices. The teacher will serve as a guide, instead of a lecturer, and wandering among the students, he or she will inspire the students to learn at their own pace. To take account of the real impact that ICT solutions are having on the education system, digitalLEARNING

spoke to several CEOs, managing directors and professors who are playing a stellar role in several higher education institutions in India. The goal of the exercise was to have an unbiased outlook on the actual contributions that ICT is having on education. We also learned about the level of implementation at different institutions. In addition to ICT, the stakeholders we interacted with were also quizzed about the benefits of the National Knowledge Network (NKN). In the pages that follow we persent the insights that we have collated from higher education...

ICTs are Tools of Change Dr Hari Krishna Maram, Managing Director and CEO, Imperial Group (Imperial College of Business Studies). He is also the Governing Council Member of AIMA, Chairman with AIMS Karnataka and Kerala Chapter and the Treasurer at EPSI -Karnataka & Kerala Chapter The information society demands workforce that can use technology as a tool to increase productivity and creativity. The job sector requires skilled pool of talent. ICT plays a crucial role in information dissemination to enhance the skills of the students and increase their employability prospects. ICTs are powerful enabling tools for educational change and reform. When used appropriately, different ICTs help expand access to education, strengthen the relevance of education to the

workplace, and raise educational quality by creating an active process connected to real life.

Implementation at Imperial Group ICT tools currently being used at our institutions include video conferencing, video lectures, online presentations and case studies, voice enabled and animation content, cloud computing, Apple and Android applications, etc.

NKN Will Put India Ahead of the Developed World Prof M J Xavier, Director, Indian Institute of Management (Ranchi)

I cannot imagine as to how we can teach without ICT. At the school level Geography can be taught by showing the places using Google maps. Even rural schools can benefit from the best teachers in good schools. Blended learning will get adopted in schools and colleges around the world. Cost of education will come down drastically. We have to move to a guru-centric model where best teachers will be able to reach thousands of students.

Implementation at IIM Ranchi At IIM Ranchi, we have a studio for recording of lectures. In our Executive MBA, the recorded lectures are made available in our LMS. Classes are used

74

education.eletsonline.com

for case discussion and exercises only. We have facilities available to stream the classes live over broadband network. We have developed an LMS with Edusoft that is social media integrated. It has built in assessment tools for evaluating posts and the learning diary. The reporting tool uses a OLAP where students can drill down and see their performance vis-Ă -vis the rest of the class in terms of each of the components. We are having a separate academic module for class scheduling and students management. We also use biometric attendance system. We are going to install security cameras to monitor students during exams. We are also going to implement ERP and CRM. We are evaluating tools

like Webex and Blackboard Connect for the distance education planned during the next academic year.

Success of NKN Success so far has been limited as the Institutions are still caught up in the industrial age mindset. For example, the 13 IIMs have more than 520 faculty members. Still there is a shortage. We need to migrate to information age models that use collaboration and networking. For a change, the so-called thinkers (academicians) are lagging behind the planners (politicians and bureaucrats). NKN will surely put India ahead of the developed world in the field of education if the IITs and IIMs start sharing resources with each other.

ICT is a Game Changer Prof V S Rao, Director & Senior Professor, BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad Campus The Indian education system will get a major boost with the implementation of ICT tools for enhanced delivery. It is going to be a real game changer for improvement of quality, access and inclusive growth. It would be a harbinger for the great revolution in teaching/ learning process.

Success of NKN National Knowledge Network will provide a plethora of opportunities for collaboration, cooperation in the field of academics. It would be really difficult to visualise the benefits and the successes that it can bring about. It is going to be great opportunity for all tiers of education and would bring down the costs tremendously and improve efficiency.

Using ICT Effectively Prof Dr. Firdos Temurasp Shroff, Visiting Professor, Institute for Technology and Management (ITM), Kharghar, Mumbai. He is also a Professor/Mentor, University of Mumbai/Mgt Institutions; SEBI Certified Trainer in Financial Education; Fellow, Indian Institute of Banking & Finance; and Senate Member, Pune University And so, they are a mixed bag and it is necessary that we recognise both their strengths and weaknesses, before planning to use them in our adult learning setup. It is more important that we recognise because if we use a technology thinking it to be ideal one, but fail to recognise its limitations, we are likely to fail in our efforts. Then we will develop the wrong notion that all ICTs are useless and inadequate for serving the goals of education. However, much needs to be done to fill up the gap for sharing of information/knowledge and to take full advantage of the ICT system in the years to come.

Like all innovations that we have come to accept, ICTs also have strengths and weaknesses. We should list these because it is important to know what they are especially if we are to plan and use them effectively.

76

education.eletsonline.com

Strengths for delivery: • Individualisation of learning • Interactivity • Low per unit cost • Distance and climate insensitive • Can serve multiple teaching functions and diverse audiences • High speed delivery, wide reach at low cost • Uniform quality

Weaknesses: • High infrastructure and start up costs • Tend toward centralized uniform content in economies of scale • Are not ideally location and problem sensitive • Problems of reach, access, remain

Level of Implementation at ITM, Kharghar, Mumbai The level of implementation at the Institution (ICT tools) is quite good. State of the art technologies have been adopted. Wi-Fi campus and 24x7 internet facilities have been provided. All students are computer savvy and provided with laptops to enable them to make best use of learning while at home and travelling. Latest Research Modules/Packages have been put to use as also links to national and International e-Journals of repute, which help researchers to upgrade, learn and utilise information on case studies. In short, our Institution has grown in strength and is equipped with a hightech campus. It ranks among Top 25 Management Institutions in India.

Quality Education through ICT Dr R S K Lakhshmana Prabhu, Managing Director, PSNA College of Engineering Technology Prior to the advent of the ICT’s those groups of people who were excluded from higher education due to social or cultural reasons were denied all opportunities to enjoy the advantages of education. But, at present, the rural populations and the ethnic minorities are able to get the full benefits of ICT. The students who want to undergo higher education and enjoy the benefit are now able to pursue their education without

going to the classrooms. In the past, the students of technology could not update their knowledge. But new technologies make it possible for us to have access to research work done by their fellow scholars at Boston or Philadelphia. Academics are able to offer education of higher quality through the use of ICTs. Independent and active learning is set to revolutionise the higher education in India.

The introduction of ICT at school level has had the beneficial effect of involving the parents in the learning of their sons and daughters. The computer and the Internet have brought about a complete change in the learning poem.

ICT Reaches out to Masses Prof S S Prasada Rao, Dean & Director, Hyderabad School of Business wide web. Our website provides access to online national and international journals, magazines, reports and projects. It subscribes to a large number of journals through Springer link (Business & Economics Journals) EBSCO, Capitaline (Capital Market), Emerald Management Xtra 150, Proquest, Free Access Journals, Ebrary (10,70,000+ Titles). Digital Engineering and Video Libraries are also accessible to students. The teaching faculty makes their teaching-learning material available on the website. All these resources make it convenient and pleasurable to learn for an aspiring student. With one of the largest youth populations in the world, India is ready to reap the benefits of demographic dividend. But for that the nation has to equip its students with better education. Unless ICT tools are utilised to deliver the educational content, we cannot aspire to reach out to all youth spread across regions and sections of population of varied degrees of development. Fortunately there is an emphasis on the part of the governments for developing ICT tools and making the same available for educational purposes. If the mass implementation of these tools attains a professional

standard, Indian can become the most important knowledge hub in the world.

Implementation at Hyderabad School of Business At GITAM University in general, and at Hyderabad Business School in particular, the website performs multiple roles. It is a gateway for the students, researchers and the teaching faculty for getting access not only to administrative information and material, but also to journals and books across the world-

Success of National Knowledge Network National Knowledge Network simply multiplies our chances of attaining excellence, especially in the field of education. The active sharing of knowledge at various stages of its creation will facilitate quality output and helps us avoid duplication, plagiarism and substandard work. The cumulative effort of scholars across the country will lead to overall improvement in the quality of our scholarship.

We have done exactly that in the case of methodology for training in English. Since ages, the same old methods of training prevailed and dominated the arena of skills training. Station-e decided to make a difference, and a fundamental one. Every one of our technological tools, learning material provided by us, and activities designed are directed at one single goal-reinventing the concept of skills training. Technology is another dimension to our Project Innovation. We belive that the smart use of technology has a magical quality. It can transform the nature and character of everything we do. It is proverbial in the case of everything else in our lives but it had remained aloof from the education environs. We invented ways to change this and bridge the divide. We evolved training programs with a vision to incorporate technological tools into the core practices of training. We have audio-visual aids in place, a Plasma TV and other gadgets which complement and supplement the whole training exercise. Each and every aspect of learning at Station-e is linked with technology and which means with, the seamless, efficient mode of functioning. Our training methodology emanates from our unmatched dedication to innovative methods for transforming skills training into a totally, completely new concept. In all, Station-e’s true accomplishment lies in conceptualizing the vision for skills training, finding ways to bridge the skills gap and emerging as the leader in skills training in the country.

Inculcating

Global Perspective in Higher Education

His Excellency Lyonchhen Jigmi Y. Thinley, Hon’ble Prime Minister, The Royal Government of Bhutan receiving a momento from Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS in the presence of Shri Prasanna Humar Patasani, Hon’ble M.P.,Bhubneshwar, Smt Saswati Bal, President, KIIT-KISS Society and Prof. N.L. n today’s age of exposure and value addition, KIIT has been able to live up to society’s expectations. Its unique focus on quality education with humane touch has resulted in its transformation from a small technical institute to a world class University within the shortest span of time. The growth of KIIT as a world-class University spreading over 25 sq. km. of prime land in 20 lush green sprawling campuses in a built-up area of 7.5 million square feet in Eastern India is incredible indeed. It was declared a University (u/s 3 of UGC Act of 1956) in 2004, within only six years of commencement of Degree programmes, thus earning it a place in the Limca Book of Records. KIIT, now a multi-disciplinary University with 23 constituent Schools offering diverse programmes, has proved itself to be the much sought after higher education centre of the country. With 17000 students pursuing both graduation and post-graduation studies, KIIT stands out as a class of its own both in quality and quantity. Student community of the University is highly disciplined due to its student friendly policies, setting it apart from other institutes. Even though it is a self-financing institution, KIIT is a well structured and decentralised organisation. It is perhaps the only self-financing institution in the country where top functionaries,

including Chancellor and Vice Chancellor, are renowned academicians. Excellence of KIIT is reflected by the performance of its very first passing out batch of students of KIIT School of Law in 2012. All 41 eligible and interested students of the batch were absorbed by 16 legal firms, chambers of top Supreme Court lawyers and companies that visited the campus. KIIT School of Law, which was established in 2007 on the pattern of National Law Schools, is now regarded as at par with the best law schools of the country. Similarly, the first batch of M.B.B.S. student of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) also passed out this year. Even though KIMS is only five years old, it features among top 30 medical colleges of the country, according to a survey published in The Daily Pioneer on its 16th May 2012 edition.

From Unknown to Well-Known The story of KIIT University, from a modest Vocational Training Centre in 1992 started with Rs. 5000/- to a sprawling University, is the story of indomitable spirit of its Founder, Achyuta Samanta. He converted his childhood struggle and hardship into his strength and went on to script this incredible success story. Emerging from obscurity, Samanta is now well known

interview

Addressing Academic Issues by Tech based Initiatives Prof G Tulasi Ram Das, Vice-Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada (JNTUK) is specialised in Power Electronics and Drives. He has 42 publications of national and international level under his name. In an interview with Pragya Gupta, he talks about various initiatives taken by JNTUK

Please share with us the ideas that have led to the creation of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. The erstwhile unified Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University established on 2nd October 1972 was a multi-campus state-wide university. Its constituent colleges and affiliated colleges were spread all over the State of Andhra Pradesh, in all the three regions - Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana. JNTU has been reorganised into four independent universities based on the geographical jurisdiction by Act No.13 dated 20 August 2008 passed in the State Legislative Assembly. JNTUK is one of the most reorganised universities located in Kakinada with 8 Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh under its jurisdiction. These eight districts are - Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam, which we call

as Eight District Zone of Excellence (EDZE). JNTUK Kakinada is one of the best universities in the country to achieve the vision, mission and goals effectively. JNTUK, in its pursuit of establishing high research and academic standards, is in the process of implementing innovative and effective technology enabled solutions to continuously produce engineering professionals to fuel our national growth. How do you address the key academic issues by initiating technology based solutions for quality assurance? Thrust areas for the university this academic year include setting up of Centre of Excellence for e-Resource development and deployment to implement knowledge repository and enhance teaching-learning effectiveness, Technology based Online Evaluation System for a transparent, error-free and accountable evaluation and swift

processing of results, and implementation of e-Learning and Assessment Solution to improve student employability skills. Please throw some light on the workings of Centre of Excellence for e-Resource development and deployment (CoEeRD). CoEeRD has two major components, E-learning modules of engineering courseware and bi-directional HD conference system. CoEeRD will continuously improve the academic excellence in all the engineering colleges affiliated to JNTUK from eight districts of its jurisdiction. E-learning modules of engineering courseware as per the university syllabus are developed both for faculty and the student. Faculty is empowered with the classroom teaching modules comprising of lecture material, animations, image gallery, and quiz to make teaching-learning effective. ICT enables faculty to use read-

ily available images and animations, so that there is lesser chalk work, and thus enhancing the productivity and providing faculty more time for interactions with the students. Faculty can augment the e-resources by adding their own content. Thus the content is continuously updated and made available to all the colleges across JNTUK. A Quality Assurance team reviews and audits the content before the same is made available to the colleges. What is your view of the impact that such systems are having on the learning outcomes of the students? Students in a classroom are heterogeneous in nature. Their learning abilities vary widely , some understand the faculty lecture in a single go and some may need to go through multiple iterations to understand. Students can play the classroom lecture archives, study different modules and self assess their understanding by taking quiz in respective concepts. This reinforces student learning and they can learn at their own pace. Guest lecturers in the areas of engineering and technology by eminent academicians and practicing engineers will be beamed live using a bi-directional HD conference system for the benefit of the learners. This platform will also be used for delivering lectures on industry trends, personality and leadership. Video lectures are archived for future reference. Online/Offline services of CoEeRD enable 24x7 accesses to the total set of knowledge resources for faculty and students from the studio located at JNTUK. In your opinion how does the new tech-based Evaluation System compare with the traditional one? The university has over four lakh students enrolled in different programmes and the numbers are increasing year on year. Through Pre and Post Examination Automation and Online Evaluation System solution, JNTUK wishes to automate pre and post examination and adapt to digitisation of answer script for onscreen marking system in its effort to achieve transparency in the evaluation of answer scripts and declaration of re-

90

education.eletsonline.com

JNTUK has been closely working with relevant industries. To name a few: • Infotech has established a control and Instrumentation Lab for MTech (Avionics). Infotech is supporting a Professor of Avionics by sponsoring his salary for three years. • BEL has established a laboratory for Optical Communication Laboratory • Honeywell has established a laboratory for Process control and Instrumentation for petroleum and petrochemical Courses. • Tejas has established a laboratory for Fibre optics. • Texas Instrumentation is going to establish Embedded Systems Laboratory

sults. This initiative will enable error free and accelerated examination processing, evaluation and result declaration by reducing the redundant laborious activities and processes. Pre exam automates student registration, centre allocation, hall ticket generation, etc. Answer scripts are digitised, without tampering the booklet and archived for evaluation by markers. Markers performance is monitored through moderated answers at regular intervals. Answer script digitisation is done in the University examination centre under controlled environment. Infrastructure for scanning, servers for answer script storage and computers for onscreen evaluation will be established. University evaluators will be trained in the onscreen marking process. All the data pertaining to the examinations from student data to marked scripts and student scores are archived and stored in university data centre with stringent data security norms. What kind of systems are you employing for online evaluation? Online evaluation system follows a stringent and much needed quality control features to enable the university for better evaluation of answer scripts, audit and administration of the marking system to ensure effective evaluation of answer-scripts and error free marks generation. The digitised answer script is in a dynamic mode. Selected question wise evaluation is carried out across the scripts to maintain uniform evaluation. This solution enables a transparent mechanism and accountability and the evaluated digitised answer script can be stored forever for any future references.

Any student will be able to access and review his answer script online for his satisfaction. Please share the role of e-Learning and Assessment Solution to enhance employability skills? Objective of the JNTUK is to be the preferred destination for the companies for their entry level talent acquisition. To enable JNTUK college students to acquire skills sought by the industry, we have launched e-Learning and Assessment Solution (eLAS), which is a robust and comprehensive online learning and assessment mechanism. eLAS is being made available to all the colleges, it can be accessed both through Intranet (the college LAN) and Internet. eLAS follows a scientific approach including, pre-assessment to reflect student strengths and areas of improvement, learning through a combination of online resources and face-to-face Mentoring at their campus, a final assessment is administered and student scores along with the academic performance is made available to the companies through a career portal. Companies can access the talent pool to shortlist the right-fit. Annual talent profile for individual college and the university are generated. JNTUK monitors the progress of key performance indicators at regular intervals to take needed action for continuous improvement. Industry Academia Meets are conducted to strengthen the Industry Institute Interaction. Cluster-wise job fairs facilitate colleges to showcase their talent and companies to interact with students to select suitable candidates.

The school’s vision is set with a futuristic view that students are the leaders of tomorrow. They are the ones who would not only lead their family but also the country to the path of progress. A progressive and developed country is the one which has its foundation strongly built upon with citizens who are not only intellectually but also socially and spiritually developed. Being Mathematics teacher to Principal, how has your journey been? I started my career as a mathematics teacher and hostel-in-charge way back in 1977. As my grandfather and father were teachers, we are the third generation in the family who took up teaching as a profession. Though there was no monetary gain but this profession is definitely the most prestigious one. My journey in the educational field has been an enriching experience from being Vice-Principal from 1995 to 2000 at Jay Jyoti School, Jaypeenagar and 2001 onwards as a Principal of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan (Tripura), Central Model School (Kolkata), Singhania Public School (Gujarat), Podar International School (Jalna), Arunodaya Public School (Thane) and Ram Ratna Vidya Mandir at present. How does Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) practice, according to you, caters to holistic development of students? CCE Pattern is a marvelous achievement of CBSE. It caters to the holistic development of the students thus making education an exciting journey rather than a burden. This pattern has been positively accepted by the teachers as well as the students. For the teachers, it gives an opportunity to evaluate students at various levels rather than what they memorise. For the students, it gives them an opportunity to portray the best in them albeit

The ICT has become an indispensible part of the educational institutions in the modern times without the pressure of rote learning or learning without comprehending. How you utilise the potential of ICT in the school? Education today has undergone tremendous change. The ICT has become an indispensible part of the educational institutions in the modern times. In the teaching process. ICT is actually addon experience that enables the teachers to take their students beyond the classroom experience. Administration obviously has become hassle free with ICT. In my school, we have an AV room well utilised by the teachers and we are in the process of installing Smartclass solutions. How has training being imparted to the teachers on a continuous basis? I believe that teaching profession is such that it should never be stagnant. Knowledge is ever growing and ever flowing. I make various arrangements for in-house as well as external experts’ training to my teachers. They are also sent to various seminars, conferences and workshops as per their subjects, so that they are constantly upgrading themselves. The teachers and students are also sent for exchange programmes to other schools for knowledge sharing. Please comment on the success of open-book examination system in Standards X and XII proposed by CBSE? Open book test is a system, that needs to be researched upon. It also involves val-

ue inculcation in the students. Focused efforts are required to bring this system into practice, which if implemented properly would definitely make this system a success. Please share the innovations done by the school in last five years. What are the future plans of the school? We have child centric educational system which involves activity based teaching that goes beyond classrooms. Subjects that are abstract like science, maths and social science have well developed laboratories that make learning fun and realistic with hands on experience. The school also has its Eco club with a difference, unlike the regular clubs which are inside the school building; this is a botanical park which has all rare and exotic plants. The gardening work is carried out by the students with the help of teacher in charge. Various other clubs like English literary, music, art and painting are in place to bring out the hidden talents in children. These are reflected through the competitions and exhibitions that take place throughout the year. Individual differences are taken well into account. The school has a good supportive Sports Department which caters to sports like Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Handball, Table Tennis, Swimming, Chess, and others. The students participate in various district, state and national as well as international level sports competitions. What is your opinion on the role of sports and physical education in the overall development of a child? Being an ardent follower of Swami Vivekanand, I believe that education should cater to character formation, strengthening of mind and expansion of intellect which will enhance the personality of a student and enable him to stand on his own feet. As I am a post graduate in Sports management from Kolkata and NIS certificate holder in football from NISS, I have experienced the significance of sports in one’s life and believe that it helps in the overall development of a child.

IT Enabled Classrooms offer Effective Learning “Real learning is ability to think laterally and developing the power to apply your thoughts in a rational manner,” says Shanthi Menon, Principal, Deens Academy, Bengaluru. In an interview with Amriteshwar Pathak, she shares her insights on various aspects of education and the role of ICTs

How has your journey so far been as a Principal? It has been a good experience. A rather fun filled journey, full of discovery and innovation. I have had the chance to explore children’s learning patterns, parents’ psychology, the diverse theories of pedagogy, various government policies in education, and also the accreditation related issues.

through this continuous assessment, gives a clear path for the child to succeed. It is motivating the child to progress and is not at all demoralising. There is no longer ‘a size fits all’ system, we are having individualised programmes for each child’s development. The continuity of the assessments also sustains effort from the child, thus taking away the last moment pressures.

In your opinion how effective is Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) as a new evaluation practice? CCE fosters sustained overall development of the child. Learning is not an isolated academic activity, it encompasses all aspects of the child – his academic/non academic activities and personality traits and skills- all of which are ever developing and need to be nurtured. A continuous assessment and modification is required to achieve this overall development. CCE offers an opportunity for flexibility in the strategies that the teachers can use to leverage learning and development; latitude for a quantifiable understanding of a child’s ability and skill; more scope to engage with each child according to his potential or aptitude, involving them in their own learning. CCE has also provided opportunities to the teacher for innovation. The constant feedback on the different aspects of the child’s development

Information and communication technology (ICT) has taken up great role in pedagogy and administration. Your opinion on the potential of ICT in education? ICT has opened up a whole new space by transforming the teaching/learning process for both learners and teachers. Teaching styles have changed, as teachers embrace IT within the curriculum through networks and internet access – providing for whole class or part of the class teaching, aided by technology supported by tools like wireless networking, notebook computers, e-books, iPad’s, etc. For students, there has been an explosion of possibilities, with information access through online resources, which use a powerful combination of video, multimedia, text and graphics, prepared by specialists. Technology also assists students to learn through ways which suit his own individual learning style and provides access to

individualised curriculum pathways and individualised diagnostic testing and assessment. Technology has therefore a direct impact on motivation and creativity of the student. It provides a greater disposition to research and problem-solving focused on real social situations, through a more comprehensive assimilation of knowledge. On the administrative levels, ERP systems effectively manage information flow about students, curricula, teachers, activities, transport, accounts and budgets. With the distinction of being the first school in Asia to have 100 percent interactive board enabled classrooms, Deens has IT at its core. All communication, record keeping, pedagogical practices and processes have technology at their crux, developed indigenously by the School. How has training being imparted to the teachers on a continuous basis? Deens believes in fostering a learning environment for its staff as much as for its students and therefore there is a structured process of continuous goal setting and learning to achieve this, through a 360 degree appraisal procedure. An inhouse training department undertakes large group sessions, while a process of mentoring through designated colleagues assists up gradation of systemic requirements. Training is two-fold – transition management, which is at the beginning of the academic session and

in-service, based on observation, reflection and feedback. How do you see the proposal of the Ministry of Human Resource Development for open-book examination system in Standards X and XII in Central Board of Secondary Examination Schools? Real learning is ability to think laterally and developing the power to apply your thoughts in a rational manner. Open book examinations will therefore, steer students away from rote learning into application, investigation, innovation and creativity. This will then be the real test of the country’s education system and genius of the people of this country. This is the path to creating global innovators and thinkers. Please share the innovations done by Deens Academy in last five years. What are the future plans of the school? At the Deens Academy, we believe that each child has his/her own potential and abilities. With our comfortable class strengths of 25 or less, the teachers are able to create differentiation in every aspect of school life. From curriculum, to classroom activities, to home work/class-work, to assessments and also projects and hands-on activities- there is innovation. IT supports this endeavour, through interactive customised modules and internet based group learning initiatives. We also endeavour to attain grade level ability for each child within a class. There is therefore a scheme of individual learning programmes for every class and in every subject. This programme assesses the starting level of the child and creates a plan which will, over the period determined, bring the child to the desired level of proficiency. At senior school level, the curriculum is dealt with parallel by an additional teacher in the same period as the mainstream class, at a more basic level. This innovation has ensured that all students attempt assessments with ease and confidence. Again the IT enabled classrooms offer effective learning. Deens follows a very innovative online admission process. The system enables instant automated interaction with prospective parents with regard to status and other information sought for admission to the School. We are now exploring the use of iPads instead of text books. We are also developing a Facebook type of interface for student learning. This, we hope, will generate discussions and comments, while teachers moderate the proceedings.

Education for Brighter Prospects has established itself as a premier institution in a very short span of time in Indore. Recently, I joined Billabong High International School Indore as Founder Principal, which is an upcoming school of the town.

Billabong High was created with the aim of firing the imagination of children. The ultimate goal is to create a funfilled and rewarding learning experience. The school aims to develop a system of learning that allows children to become thinkers, innovators and problem solvers. Shyam Agrawal, Principal, Billabong High International School, Indore, in conversation with Amriteshwar Pathak shares his insights

Please share your remarkable journey from being an educator to being a principal. It has rightly been said, “The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have.” I have always heard that great strength comes from undertaking of great responsibilities, but in my case it went in a very different way. The great

responsibilities that I shouldered on became my great strength. As a person I was exposed to all the genres of this field. I had worked as Vice Principal at Imperial Academy and as Sr Vice Principal at Queens’ college, Indore, for 14 years and then I began my journey as a principal at Advanced Academy in the year 2005. Today the school has reached the pinnacle of success. It

What are your views on the new evaluation practice like continuous and comprehensive evaluation of children over the traditional practice? Change does not necessarily assume progress but progress definitely requires change. Education is essential as education has the unique ability of creating both, new wants and the ability to satisfy them! Everything has its pros and cons, but being an optimist and a visionary let’s begin with positive aspects. This is a tool through which every child can be evaluated as a unique individual. Traditionally we used to declare result on the basis of question papers, without considering the performance of the child throughout the year. With CCE, the child is assessed not only through marks on external subjects, but also on basis of overall attitude. In this system there are no formal examinations till class eighth and continuous assessments through worksheets, projects, discussions and oral evaluation conducted externally reduce the stress, and discourage rote learning tendency amongst the students. Every child individually shows his potential and calibre according to his ability and understanding in various skills. Every change needs time to be absorbed, so the parents should understand this first and support the system by seeing development of their children and teachers to motivate their students by seeing their growth in a particular skill.

interview

Challenges being addressed by these technologies over the next few years: • Complementary contributions of formal learning structures and informal approaches to learning. • The rapid changes and the need for stability. • The tension between our social status on demand of industrial era and the new styles of learning, emerging with information technologies in knowledge societies. • The need to ensure the use of technology for learning to enhance our opportunities and empower us and not to dominate our lives or completely take over.

How has training being imparted to the teachers on a continuous basis? The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change. Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. As a human, the learning never stops and I strongly and affirmatively believe in it. I try my level best to train my teachers by various interactive activities. I believe that every teacher must receive proper training to instil fundamental values and capabilities in his or her students. The teacher must serve as a facilitator for learning and be a role model for children and the community at large. The centre of any educational endeavour is the teacher. All teachers are constantly trained on the latest techniques and lessons appropriate for their classroom. How do you see the role of Information and communication technology (ICT) in pedagogy and administration? What is the level of ICT implementation in the school? Please share the challenges that are being addressed by these technologies? The current world is undergoing significant and rapid changes and the teach-

ing and learning styles will need to evolve. Transformational technologies such as ICT have profound implications for learning and learning systems. With the help of ICT academic discipline and the teaching and learning process can be done at a higher level. We need to continuously enrich and improve our learning systems through experience, innovations and research. We have to advance ourselves with advancing era of technology. The level of ICT implementation in the school needs to improve upon relevance of curriculum, learner friendly textbook contents, innovative transaction strategies, implementation of technology driven classrooms, teaching learning to learn, continuous and comprehensive assessment techniques of testing and continuous empowerment of teachers. CBSE has announced proposal for open-book examination system in Standards X and XII Examination? Where school examination ends real life begins. In school, we were taught a lesson and then given a test. In Life, we are given a test that teaches us a lesson.

Academia k-12 interviewSpeak

Proposal of open-book will lead to better student involvement in the creation of syllabus. The students will be informed about this, months earlier so that they will have enough time to go through these areas and prepare the answer to analytical questions rather than mechanical queries. With this method there is less emphasis on rote learning or getting the coursework completed through the use of guide books. Students learn to navigate with skills and practice. The current proposals for education reform aims to boost the second, by undermining the first. In an openbook exam, the student has diminished incentive to familiarise himself with the subject matter ahead of time, as it is available for reference during the exam. To implement this system, it should be tested on various parameters from the administration point of view. Please share the innovations done by the school in last five years. Where would you like to take your school in near future? Billabong High International School has 24 branches in India and in Maldives and Dubai. The institution is constantly endeavouring to bring about improvements in its curriculum. It is the first, unique LRQ model, which is based on Learner-Centric Approach in which all teachers are empowered with strategies so that they can cater to different styles of learning. An optimum teacher-child ratio supports the learner-centric programme. We have research based curriculum in which a team of instructional design experts along with a team of educationists design the curriculum to cater to the needs of 21st century learner. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and theme based to help students grasp complex concepts and to encourage long term retention and understanding. We use Bloom’s Taxonomy to foster higher order thinking skills like application, exploration and creativity in students and superior quality standards in which all the five domains that is Teaching, Learning, Administration, Environment and Leadership of the schools are maintained.

interview K-12

“I Love to be a Principal” “Our School began its journey with the vision of creating a social culture where every child is educated with a concrete set of values for intellectual, scientific and spiritual development of our nation,” says Niyas Chirakkara, Principal, Progressive English School, Kannur, Kerala, in conversation with Amriteshwar Pathak How has your journey been as a Principal? Even though the job of a principal is challenging, I really enjoy it. It has been three years since I have become a principal. When I compare the other positions I have handled I can say without doubt I love to be a principal. As a principal you have to take care of many children. You have to manage the teachers and you are also involved in many other matters. In a CBSE affiliated school the principal has to deliver very high standards of work. You need enough training to be a better principal. I am trying my best to be a better one. What are your views on the new evaluation practices like Continuous and comprehensive evaluation of children over the traditional practices? I have no difficulty in empathising with CCE. It is the best practice available to help students achieve a lot. The problem is that many of the teachers do not use CCE properly. If it is used properly, it will

bring great benefits. I know from personal experience that students are in favour of CCE. They can show whatever abilities they have through this. Moreover they will benefit by getting extra grades based on their performance in co-scholastic areas. The most important thing is that class 10 has become less tensed now. How do you see the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in pedagogy and administration? Information and Communication Technology has an eminent role to play in the field of education. With the advent of digital classroom, schooling has become more interesting for students. The students now live in a world of technology. They like it very much. So if the teachers are not able to use ICT in their classroom, the students may consider them to be outdated. Moreover, it will be easy for a teacher to help their students’ internalise difficult concepts through ICT. ICT can also bring about a positive revolution in school administration.

How has training being imparted to the teachers on a continuous basis? We provide training to staff on specific issues that they may face when they teach students. In the beginning of the academic session there will be a week’s rigorous training for all teachers. That helps teachers get updated with the current trends and developments in the field of education. We have a system of evaluating teachers systematically. After the evaluation, if any area is found weak we provide specific training. Now we have finished two full-day workshops for math teachers at different venues on different days. Next week we are planning to take the entire K G teacher to one other place for whole day training. This process goes on throughout the year. How do you see the proposal of open-book examination system in Standards X and XII in Central Board of Secondary Examination? If it is practiced positively, it will cater to the concepts of exam. But open book exam will be more difficult for students to answer because they will have to be very clear about all the concepts and theories they have been taught. Getting all questions and answers will not be enough for students. Please share the innovations planned by the school in the coming years. This is my fourth year in this school. We have prepared a priority list for 2017. By 2017 we have decided to reach international standards. The priority of this year is on academic excellence. We plan to reach our students to the top positions in the country. The project will officially start by the end of October 2012.
