PM lauds engineers’ role in nation building as extremely vital

To fast track the assessment and accreditation of Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs), the IITs and IIMs along with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and National Board of Accreditation (NBA) will be roped in, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar has said. He said that the NAAC and NBA will be expanded and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will all together form an accreditation agency to expedite the process. Currently, only 15 percent of all the higher educational institutes across the country are accredited.

Lauding engineering fraternity for “several path breaking innovations”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently described their role in national building as “extremely vital”. He also paid rich tributes to India’s pioneer engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya whose birthday is marked as the ‘Engineers Day’. Extending his greetings on Engineers Day, the Prime Minister in a tweet said: “On #EngineersDay, best wishes to all engineers, whose intellect, dedication & curiosity have led to several pathbreaking innovations.” “On #EngineersDay, I congratulate our hardworking engineers and appreciate their dexterity as well as dedication. Their role in nation building is extremely vital. I also pay tributes to the noted engineer, Shri M Visvesvaraya, on his birth anniversary,” said the Prime Minister in another tweet. Describing Visvesvarya as a pioneering engineer, the Prime Minister tweeted, “We salute with pride & joy Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary. He is remembered & respected as a pioneering engineer.” Every year the Engineers Day is celebrated on 15 September as a tribute to the first and one of the greatest Indian Engineers Visvesvaraya. Fondly called Sir MV, he was literally the builder of India, the builder of dams and water systems. It not only boosted irrigation facilities but also saved a large number of people from floods. He was an engineering pioneer of India whose genius reflected in harnessing of water resources and building and consolidation of dams across the country. Born on 15 September in 1861 in Mysore, Karnataka, Visvesvaraya died on 12 April, 1962.

IITs, IIMs to help in Higher Educational Institutes’ accredition: Javadekar

september 2018

“We have asked IITs and IIMs to come together and create an agency which we can use to expedite the process of accreditation,” the minister said. Describing about the deciding factors for any institute’s accreditation, Javadekar said, “From now onwards learning outcome and quality of education will be the key parameter for determining the standard of an institute. 80 percent of the weightage for accreditation will be given on learning outcome and peer reviews, while the physical verification of the campus and infrastructure could be done through the use of satellites.” “An institute which maintains quality will only survive and those who fail to do so will be out of business,” he added. In August, the University Grants Commission (UGC) cleared a proposal to allow more accreditation agencies to enhance the existing capacity.

UP Govt to appoint retired professors to meet shortage of teachers The Government of Uttar Pradesh has given a go ahead for appointment of retired professors of government medical colleges on contract basis to meet the shortage of senior teachers for upcoming super-specialty blocks in four hospitals. The teachers will be appointed at the under construction paediatrics hospital at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur and the Super Speciality Cancer Hospital in Lucknow on a monthly remuneration of Rs 2.30 lakh which is equivalent to that of AIIMS. The super speciality blocks are to be established at four medical colleges in Gorakhpur, Meerut, Jhansi and Allahabad under the Prime Minister Swastha Suraksha Yojana. In addition to that an indoor patient facility is also proposed at the Super Speciality Cancer Hospital at CG City in Lucknow this year. A 500-bed paediatric hospital is being established at the BRD Medical College to cater to encephalitis-affected regions of Purvanchal and Terai. The proposal was made considering that medical teachers in Uttar Pradesh retire at the age of 65 while the Medical Council of India allows 70 years as the retirement age. In an another significant decision, the proposal to implement 7th Pay Commission benefits for employees of Industrial Development Authorities in the state from January 1, 2016, was also cleared.

Is Your Kid’s Preschool

Safe & Secure?

Watching one’s child going to preschool for the first time is an emotional experience for many parents. But many of us turn so overwhelmed at times that we tend to ignore many critical aspects related to the preschool – safety, security, and hygiene being some of them, Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN) underlines all this and much more.

Not only clean food or water but neat and clean premises results into healthy learning among students. Water clogging must be avoided within the premise as it causes many diseases

preschool usually lays the foundation stone of child’s educational career. Learning how to ride a bicycle or tricycle or use roller skates or even participating in various day-to-day activities be a fun. But all of them need a constant attention. Such activities at preschools lead to laying of the foundation for kids’ holistic development. But, it is important to take care of kids’ safety during the activities so that their participation becomes a joyful learning experience. As preschools act as the foundation of a child’s education ahead, it is important that the safety, security and hygiene are among the key focus areas and not limited to activities. 3 key methods to evaluate a child’s safety and security at preschool: Physical Safety: Is the preschool environment, its staff and infrastructure can protect its student from any physical harm within and outside the premises? Emotional Safety: What kind of treatment are students getting? Do they feel empowered to express themselves?

Cognitive Safety: Is the teaching, pedagogy and curriculum are appropriate as per the kid’s age? It can be observed that safety and security is a very broad term in respect of preschools. The age when kids enter a preschool is so tender that any mishappening with them may affect their life ahead. Not only parents or teachers but also the staff and administration has major role in ensuring the kids reach school safe, remain safe within the premises and reach their homes safe. It is important to understand the issues first and then possible solutions, to avoid any awkward situation. Challenges of Physical Safety Injuries: Young children do not understand the effects of playing rough which may accidentally cause injuries to them or their friends. Fire Safety: It is important for every preschool to pay attention to fire safety guidelines as consequences of overlooking fire proofing and fire drills can be severe. Transportation: Bus drivers and conductors and drivers may not always be able to take care of

Emotional safety: Major challenges Corporal Punishment:  In 2010, The Ministry of Women and Child Development issued a new set of guidelines to ban any kind of punishment, which includes beatings and even making children stand for hours. Preschools also ensure teachers not try to punish students in this manner. Molestation and Abuse: Kids in preschools are often at risk of assault from the staff responsible for their care, which can cause trauma and injury. Very few such cases come to light as young children hesitate to talk about the issue. This makes it more important to have preventive safeguards in place. Learning/Emotional Problems:  It is important to figure out different psychological issues among young children like problems at home, learning disabilities, social problems, and others. In case of these issues not addressed, they can hamper a child’s development. Safety Measures Individual attention: It is one of the most important measures to ensure the emotional safety of all students. Not only teachers but parents as well has a very important role in it. Friendly communication with kids and monitoring change in their behaviour may help parents to find out the problems and help them in resolving it. Cognitive safety: Major Challenges Academic Pressure:  Preschool isn’t meant for putting academic pressure on kids rather it is about nurturing them in a positive and amiable

Safety Measures Preschool premises: The premises of the preschools should be well guarded, have walls and proper fencing wherever required. The entry and exit of the preschool must ensure security against those who may harm the children. Staff: Every staff’s personal and professional background must be checked and police verification must be done. It helps in keeping people with criminal backgrounds away from school premises. Teaching and non-teaching staff must be trained to respond in case of any emergency. Identification: Along with Identification cards to every student, authority cards must also be issued to every person including parents who will pick and drop students at the preschool. Classrooms: It is necessary that electrical cords and switch boards are kept out of the students’ reach. Every electrical outlet should be covered with childproof materials. Cleaning supplies and medicines should be locked away. Toys and furniture: All materials (toys, mats, furniture etc.) should meet regulatory standards. Suitable fall surfaces should be present around any play equipment and furniture to avoid any accident. Observation: CCTV cameras should cover all classrooms and the complete premises. Consistency: Daily safety checks should be carried out to ensure that maintenance is up to date. Mock drills must also be carried out on regular basis to make student and staff ready

for any emergency.

environment to handle pressures of future. Any kind of academic pressure from parents or teachers may not let them reach developmental milestones in time. Safety Measures: Teaching materials: All teaching materials including toys should be age appropriate. They should be made of child safe material. Syllabus: The syllabus should be structured in a manner that doesn’t stress out children. Role of the teachers and staff : Teachers are kind of children’s second parents and have responsibilities that span physical, emotional and cognitive safety issues. They must take care of certain points so that the students don’t face a situation that may hamper their growth ahead. Physical presence: Teachers should maintain attendance records and do regular head counts to ensure that none of the students is absent. Supervision: Individual attention must be paid to every student all time monitoring their behaviour and activities. Reporting: Teachers should maintain reports of accidents and incidents. Illness prevention: Teachers should be trained to identify illnesses and take measures to contain infection. Medical needs: Teachers should be aware of each child’s allergies and medical issues. Emergency contact: The staff should have the contact information of the parents or other emergency contacts for the child Hygiene: An important aspect of kids’ safety We have often heard about the personal hygiene habits that every preschooler should maintain. These habits include washing hands, sneezing or coughing etiquettes, short nails and many others. But what if the students are cleaning their hands with contaminated water? What if a teacher or staff is not following the coughing or sneezing etiquettes taught to students? What if the toilets in preschools are not properly maintained? If all these and other issues are not handled well in the preschools, there is no point how clean our students are. There are many chances of students falling ill if any of the aforementioned problems is there. Certain points that every preschool must take care in terms of hygiene along with that of students: Contaminated water: If kids spend four to five

hours a day in preschools, any kind of bacteria in the water may infect students with diseases that will hamper their studies. It is necessary for school administration to get the water tanks clean on regular intervals. They must also be checked for any kind of infection time-to-time. Contaminated food: Some of the preschools offer food to their students. Like water, it is important to ensure cleanliness while cooking or even purchasing the vegetables or food items. First of all, it must be ensured by the school administration that food items bought from the market must be of good quality. In addition to that, every vegetable must be washed and cleaned thoroughly. The serving dishes and utensils must also be thoroughly cleaned. Maintaining good quality standard of food will help the children to remain healthy. Clean premises: Not only clean food or water but neat and clean premises results into healthy learning among students. Water clogging must be avoided within the premise as it causes many diseases. At the same time, the lavatories used by Kids must be cleaned exhaustively as dirty toilets may cause various types of health related troubles among the tiny tots. It must also be ensured that the kids’ toilets are not used by any of the staff members or teachers. Hygenic Staff: Teachers and staff member come in direct contact of students. They must wear clean clothes. In case a teacher or staff member is infected with any kind of disease, they must avoid at all cost to be in contact with students. In all, it is important that the students remain safe and secure within the preschool premises. Along with various other measures, hygiene is also an important issue that must be addressed by the preschools for healthy and holistic learning among the young children. In brief, though a lot needs to be done to provide a safe, hygienic and secured environment, there is much that just needs parental and schools’ attention to ensure that the kids enjoy their stay at preschool and feel like being in a well secured and interesting environment for long hours.

Teachers are kind of children’s second parents and have responsibilities that span physical, emotional and cognitive safety issues. They must take care of certain points so that the students don’t face a situation that may hamper their growth ahead.

Educational Conclaves’ Key Role in Building Robust India With numerous conclaves being organised every other day across India, there is a growing sense of curiosity to know different aspects that may define such summits’ importance. Sandeep Datta and Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN) chose to underline how these mega-events are facilitating things in various ways and sometimes even in exploring answers to perennial problems.

Be it seminars, conferences or conclaves, they come up as such useful platforms that may lead to high-level policy changes or rethinking on major issues

s part of collective endeavour, these summits or conclaves are actually organised to understand, highlight, and discuss any set of issues that influence a sector in various dimensions. Created as platforms for deliberations, arguments or pondering upcoming or existing challenges and their possible solutions, these summits are vital outlets to establish dialogue among all key stakeholders of a mission or contributors giving shape to a vision. At a time when India is on its way to be a leader in various sectors, conferences and seminars can support the nation in its efforts in innumerable ways. But how? Let’s look at the Indian education sector and scope of such conclaves in paving the way for a big transformation.

The World of Education and the Conclaves — the New-Age Knowledge-Exchange Forums The education landscape is transforming at a rapid pace to impart quality education to every child. At the same time, a lot of countries across the world are embracing innovative methodologies to

improve their teaching-learning processes as well as to nurture their young citizens as the future global leaders. With a lot of innovation taking place and modern technologies existing in the market, there is a strong sense of desire in a major section of educational organisations to improve and grow holistically. These organisations and their visionary leaders wish to share and understand the best and latest practices at frequent intervals. Be it seminars, conferences or conclaves, they come up as such useful platforms that may lead to high-level policy changes or rethinking on major issues. They also help stakeholders to talk about or observe the challenges, reforms, innovations, latest practices, pedagogical changes and future prospects of the education sector.

Changing educational scenario and surge in usage of technology In case of school education, there was a time when most of us used to look upon it as something confined to merely the study of some common subjects (i.e. Mathematics, Science, English or regional language) to be eligible to earn livelihood or acquire higher education later. But perceptions have changed due to globalisation and hence the education sector has acquired a new meaning with its own set of challenges and scope of financial benefits as well for various stakeholders. Due to technology and new career opportunities, a growing number of schools like parents do not wish their students or children to be restricted to thinking of becoming an engineer, doctor or lawyer. They want them to explore something distinct. They are supporting the youngsters to pursue hobbies as

[ dl.eletsonline.com ] The Largest Portal on Innovation in Education in Asia and the Middle East

Reality Check – Are stakeholders aware about latest innovations? As a lot is happening in the education sector nowadays in terms of innovations, there is a huge need to fully discuss and understand all possibilities by all stakeholders from end user (public) to service providers (educational institutes and industry). As in India, a big section of schools continues to rely upon the traditional chalk-and-talk method to impart education, there is a huge scope to propagate about latest technologies and innovations. In various regions, schools or colleges can benefit tremendously, provided they are familiarised about latest innovations. It is probable that irrespective of government or private sector, looking at elementary or higher education, or even skill education may require a transformed perspective. It is possible to discuss such challenges or scopes of imparting new skills to trainers and trainees and even their organisations through participation in educational conclaves i.e. Elets World Education Summits. These platforms can serve as useful forums for obtaining detailed information of the latest practices and accordingly bringing the change in goals and approaches.

Conclaves – A Multi-Dimensional Solution of Common Challenges While the Government is taking lot of initiatives

and schools want to adopt every innovative and successful practice and parents want their children to study in a globally competitive environment, various challenges exist. The major challenge is of communication gap. There is still a big scope and need for a majority of stakeholders of the education sector to properly understand and explore about the Government or private sector initiatives, latest methodologies, technological tools. But the information is not getting delivered from source to end user at an expected pace. Here, summits or conclaves play a vital role.

Ultimate Solution to Bridge the Communication Gap Every day, there are new innovations related to lecture delivery methodologies, curriculum and pedagogy. These innovations and ICT are supporting schools, colleges and universities to deliver the knowledge swiftly and precisely. As a platform, which brings policymakers, preschools, schools, higher education institutes, edtech corporate and edu-leaders, a conclave serves as the best medium to facilitate things as a comprehensive communication channel about the most recent developments in the education sector. There is a need to duly recognise genuine and reputed conclaves that involve conferences, expos, and networking opportunities between the buyers and sellers, or for the innovators, experts, and policymakers. This is because these are needed as quintessential platforms of open and all inclusive knowledge-exchange. Also, because they initiate highest level of engagement for all irrespective of place. These conclaves also continue to influence the decision makers and experts, even months after they actually take place with the help of social media as well. Summits such as being organised for about oneand-a-half decades by Elets Technomedia in the field of education, smart city, e-governance, and the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI). In case of educational conclaves, the annual events like the World Education Summits are helping the educational institutes and teachers to take the meaning of imparting education to a new level. The summits hold an unprecedented significance in redefining the objectives and approaches to perceive meaning of literacy, knowledge, and skills in sync with the modern-day trends and making them relevant as per market demands.

career options such as in dance, music, theatre, sports. In brief, there is an overall change in society and growth opportunities for all. The changing scenario and inclination of parents are among the reasons that the Central and State Governments are now emphasising on skill development of students from a very young age. The Governments have launched various schemes, programmes and initiatives to boost creativity and make Indian youth skilful as per the present industry needs. Another most important factor for transformation in the education sector is more use of technology. The technology has now moved beyond the smart board or smart classrooms. Educational institutes are using technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to provide their students real-time learning experience of different concepts. These technologies are helping the students to understand topics of different subjects through info graphics, videos, audio-visuals, and presentations.

Metacognitive Skills & Early Learners 16

Developing Metacognitive Skills among Kids: Trends and Implications Metacognition is important to learning and knowledge transfer and also preparing students to be lifelong learners. The engagement of young students in metacognitive thinking is considered necessary, writes Amita Bhardwaj, Director – Curriculum, Footprints Childcare, for Elets News Network (ENN).

M

etacognitive knowledge signifies what each person knows about themselves. This knowledge helps them learn better, solve problems, make decisions and much more. Metacognitive strategies points to the ways and methods used to aid students understand the way they learn; in other words, it means procedures designed for students to improve their learning processes. John H Flavell (1979) an American development psychologist further divides metacognitive knowledge into three categories: • Person variables: What one comprehends about his or her own strengths and weaknesses • Task variables: What one knows or can figure out about the nature of a task and the processes required to complete a task • Strategy variables: The strategies a person has “at the ready” to apply in a flexible way to successfully accomplish a task Implying this to early childhood education may sound to be a very tactful task but it is indeed very beneficial. Most of us do metacognition everyday but we just don’t coin the term for it. Children not just produce good performance results, but by using these strategies they turn out as satisfied, able and happy human beings. With the use of metacognition in their day to day lives the risks of mental setbacks, depression, anxiety and challenges in decision making are drastically reduced. “Metacognition ensures a shift in the mind-set of a child starting from their early education years. Children instead of finding excuses or ways to avoid the task which is challenging, engage in the process to resolve it. One of the most powerful by-products of metacognitive thinking is increased self-regulation,” says Marc Gladstone, Former Director-Learning support, Trinity School and Berkeley Carroll School. A child who is regularly told how talented he/she is and is used to being complimented for his/her performances is likely to get frustrated and overwhelmed at the sheer thought of performing badly or not meeting expectations. But if we talk about a child high on metacognitive skills, who is complimented for his/her ability to work hard and persevere when faced with a challenge, can use the skills to figure out a way of rehearsing that works better for him/her. In order to help children develop metacognitive skills, it is imperative

they are given space to think. Let children reflect on what they think about themselves; reason it with them to understand where the thinking arises from. Ask them when display difficult behaviour, if they can think of an alternate better way of handling the situation. Encourage children to move their thinking in the direction to comprehend how they can use their understanding and interpretation skills to find better solutions to their problems.

‘’When you teach young children to think about their behaviour differently, they begin to behave differently,” says Tamara Rosier, a PhD in Leadership and Learning, and has successfully worked with organisations to develop stronger teams, healthier cultures, and more effective leaders. While a lot of hard-work and perseverance is expected from a child to go through this process to achieve metacognitive skills, the parents here need to display a lot of patience.

Such enriching environment created with the support of teachers takes learning to a new level making it a life-time experience for students. Each positive or negative word creates a person’s image in children’s mind. By acknowledging efforts of a child, teachers can help him/her improving their learning or refining their skills. Scolding is not always necessary to make students realize their mistake but a strict yet calm explanation of the difference between good and bad gains respect for teachers. It also helps them to control students’ undesirable behaviour easily. When a child is not listening remember that hitting them is not at all acceptable rather than teacher should take this as an opportunity and understand why they are showing such behaviour. After finding out the real cause of student’s such beaviour, teacher must rectify that reason and mould students’ towards the right path. Such practices make even undisciplined students think that “I can also do it”. An enriching environment with wellplanned developmentally appropriate activities, encouraging coach and last with motivating words can do miracles for our children. Children have unlimited potential and we need an attitude to see that.

Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: Role of Parents and Teachers According to a report in 2017 by National Crime Records Bureau, a child is sexually abused every 15 minutes in India. It is important that both parents and schools are aware of their responsibilities to avoid such incidents, observes Dr Swati Popat Vats, President, Podar Education Network, for Elets News Network (ENN).

C

hild sexual abuse exploits and degrades children and can cause serious damage to cognitive, social, and emotional development of a child. As a society, we have a collective responsibility to prevent child sexual abuse. To accomplish this, we must initiate and support services, policies and programmes that enhance children’s development, health and safety.

What is child sexual abuse?• The standing committee on sexually abused children (Bajpai, 2003) has defined Child Sexual Abuse as ‘Any child below the age of consent may be deemed to have been sexually abused when a sexually mature person has by design or by neglect of their usual societal or specific responsibility in relation to the child engaged or permitted engagement of that child in any activity of a sexual nature which is intended to lead to the sexual gratification of the sexually mature person. • This definition pertains whether or not it involves genital or physical contact, whether or not initiated by the child and whether or not there is a discernible harmful outcome in the short run.’ • The NSW Child Protection Council definition states, ‘child sexual assault occurs when an adult or someone bigger than a child uses his power or authority over the child and takes advantage of the child’s trust and respect to involve the child in sexual activity.

Some myths about child sexual abuse1. Only strangers abuse kids sexually-Fact- Danger from strangers is only a small part of the problem. Research evidence world over indicates that in a majority of cases, (up to 85%) the child’s relatives, family, friends, or someone known and trusted by the child is involved. 2. Only men sexually abuse children-Fact- An overwhelming majority of those who sexually abuse children is men although women are the ones who spend most time with children. Only a small minority of women report to have abused children. 3. Child sexual abuse happens only in poor or problem familiesFact- Child sexual abuse cuts across classes, caste, religious and educational barriers and occurs irrespective of what the background

of the abuser and the child is. 4. When children say they have been abused, it is often a figment of their imagination or fantasyFact- Most times, children are unable to disclose or talk about abuse. In rare instances, when they do talk, it is not their imagination or fantasy but very real; children need to be believed and supported if they talk about any sexual touching or if they express any reservations about interacting with particular adults. 5. We can tell if a child is sexually abused-FactChildren are experts at hiding their pain. It is difficult to say from external appearance if the child is sexually abused. 6. Boys cannot be abused-Fact- Although more girls are reported to be sexually abused, (one in every four) research indicates one in

An important law POCSO – Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012:

Key steps to safeguard child: 1. Conduct regular good touch bad touch sessions with children 2. Conduct trainings of all staff and sensitize them on what body parts can never be touched by males or staff not related to toilet duties. 3. Conduct regular checks of the cctv footage 4. Ensure that they have at least 30 days of CCTV footage for retrieval. 5. Do not leave children alone with any male staff member. 6. Get police verification done of all support staff and in case of doubt get it done for teaching staff too 7. Make all teaching and non teaching staff sign a prevention of child abuse policy which states that they will not abuse a child or mishandle physically or emotionally. In case of a complaint then strict actions will taken against them. 8. Read the POCSO act because child sexual abuse is not just about ‘penetration’ or ‘rape’. It starts with tickling, fondling, showing obscene material etc. and then moves to other levels of abuse. All staff should be aware of the POCSO act.

Understand the importance of reporting child abuse cases – as per the POCSO act: • Any person, who fails to report the commission of an offence under sub-section (i) of section 19 or section 20 or who fails to record such offence under sub-section 2) of section 19 shall be punished with imprisonment of either description which may extend to six month or with fine or with both. • Any person, being in-charge of any company or an institution (by whatever name called) who fails to report the commission of an offence under sub-section (1) of section 19 in respect of a subordinate his control, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year and with fine.

Important for parents and schools to understand why are young kids easy targets of child sexual abuse Kids are easy target of sexual abuse because… • Young children thrive on touch, touch is one of their most important senses in the early years and naturally they show and accept love using this sense the most • Early experiences at touching and being touched are incredibly important—not only for molding later tactile sensitivity, motor skills, and understanding of the physical world but also for her very health and emotional wellbeing. If your child associates touch with a traumatic experience then it will impact overall development. So it is important to keep them away from all kinds of bad touch • Kids thrive on touch and seek it from everyone, this makes them easy targets • They do not understand what bad touch is unless

• The Act defines a child as any person below the age of 18 years and provides protection from the offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography. • This is the first time that an Act has listed aspects of touch as well as non-touch behaviour (e.g. photographing a child in a obscene manner) under the ambit of sexual offences. • The Act incorporates child friendly procedures for reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and trial of offences • The attempt to commit an offence under the Act has also been made liable for punishment for up to half the punishment prescribed for the commission of the offence. • The Act also provides for punishment for abetment of the offence, which is the same as for the commission of the offence. This would cover trafficking of children for sexual purposes. • The media has been barred from disclosing the identity of the child without the permission of the Special Court.

Danger from strangers is only a small part of the problem. Research evidence world over indicates that in a majority of cases, (up to 85%) the child’s relatives, family, friends, or someone known and trusted by the child is involved

explained to recognize it • They lack the communication or vocabulary to share with you about what they experienced • Many parents think kids are imagining this behavior and thus tend to ignore the child’s attempts to talk about it • The abuser is usually someone you trust and he is confident that you will not suspect him and it will be his word against that of a small child • Abusers know that most parents are afraid of the social stigma and will thus not bring any action against the abuser and he can move on to the next child

Tips for parents in keeping their child safe from child sexual abuse: 1. Look for safe schools, daycares and crèches rather than ‘sought after ones’, or ‘cheap ones’. 2. Check the following before enrolling your childa. Do they have a prevention of child sexual abuse policy? b. Do they make staff sign a zero tolerance policy? c. Are all the support staff police verified? Check the documents. d. Do they have CCTV coverage of important areas and those areas that have nooks and crannies? e. Do they check the CCTV footage every week? f. Do they store CCTV footage for 30 days? g. Are they aware of the POCSO act? 3. Conduct regular good touch bad touch sessions with your child, don’t leave it only to the school to conduct. 4. Regularly speak to your child and listen for

instances of any adult playing with your child alone. 5. Always respect your child and never say - you are lying. 6. It is your right to file an FIR in the police station. 7. Police should come to your house in plain clothes to interview your child. A woman officer has to be sent. 8. Child sexual abuse is on the rise, especially in India. Apart from ensuring that we know where children are all the time and with who they are all the time, parents should also ensure that ‘people’ who look after their children respect children. Increase in the easy availability and accessibility of porn on mobile phones etc. has led to young children being easy targets for ‘fulfillment’.

Some dos and don’ts for parents1. In most cases of sexual abuse the family knows the abusers. So ensure that you really ‘know’ people before trusting your child in their care. 2. Working parents especially find it difficult to keep children in a safe environment, so make the rules clear to the daycare or person who takes care and to your child. 3. Some children keep quiet about being abused because the offender threatens them. This is why parents should not threaten children. When you threaten children, it makes them soft targets of all kinds of threats. And then makes them susceptible to danger. 4. Read the POCSO Act because child sexual abuse is not just about ‘penetration’ or ‘rape’. It starts with tickling, fondling, showing obscene material etc. and then moves to other levels of abuse.

Some children keep quiet about being abused because the offender threatens them. This is why parents should not threaten children. When you threaten children it makes them soft targets of all kinds of threats. And then makes them susceptible to danger.

They should always opt for a clean and hygienic place which is surrounded by nature as hygiene is very important for children. It is necessary to know if the curriculum involves all kind of activities that are better for the development of a child. Thus, a parent’s preference should be towards systems which provide best education and moral support. Montessori education offers child’s participation with hands-on learning experience; whereas in traditional preschool learning children are expected to get everything with the help of teacher. The most important reason for choosing Montessori education is its nature of curriculum as it is adaptable to student needs. It can be changed if it suits the need of the learners but, in traditional learning, the curriculum is predetermined and is not customised as per the need of the students. The ideology of Montessori education differs from traditional preschool education in various ways. The environment here is prepared in advance to facilitate child’s consideration. It goes along with the working capability of facilitators as they are responsible for all the activities that take place within the school environment. Cambridge Montessori Preschool has a strong focus on best international practices, inhouse research on academics, highly educated and trained human resource and leveraging on technological enhancements. Parenting in Preschool Education

Parents as Partners in their Kids’ Development Parental encouragement and support for learning activities at home combined with parental involvement in preschooling are critical to kids’ education, writes Hazel Siromoni, Managing Director-South Asia, Maple Bear, for Elets News Network (ENN).

Parents cannot absolve themselves from their responsibility having sent their child to a preschool, rather all of us have to work together in providing a facilitative environment which is engaging, filled with care, love, learning and growth.

P

arenting is becoming complex with each new day though the emotions behind parenting remain the same irrespective of generations. At Maple Bear, we are very clear in sharing with parents that they are equally important in their children’s academic and nonacademic development. We find that it is extremely important that a child doesn’t get confused by receiving two sets of messages one in his/her school and the other at home. It is a well proven fact that the communication and partnership between the school and parents is imperative for the child’s holistic development. We have observed that parents’ engagement in early childhood education impacts their child’s development positively. Parents cannot absolve themselves from their responsibility just by having

sent their child to a preschool. Rather all of just have to work together in providing a facilitative environment which is engaging, filled with care, love, learning and growth. Enough science and research has proven in all spheres be it psychologically, academically, emotionally or physically that these early years are the most important years for our children and young learners. This investment is also the basis to strengthening our children to be able to handle both success and failures. Emotional Quotient (EQ) of children is equally more important as of Intelligence Quotient (IQ). One may find nowadays that our young people are getting overwhelmed with challenges and responding to opportunities wherein they find themselves ill-equipped in making choices, decisions without getting stressed. All this is linked to the experiences in the early years and if we all want to have a generation of sensitive, empathetic, resilient, innovative, excellence demanding leaders, it is important for parents, teachers and school administration to work together without creating lines that are more divisive than collaborative. One very significant outcome is that this kind of parent engagement as partners allows the children to see the most important people of their lives working together, providing them a sense of comfort, confidence and ability to focus on learning.

Technology and Preschool Education

Technology’s Role in Imparting Early Childhood Education Technology should be seen as catalyst to widen the horizon of learning, rather than an antidote. More and more teachers are open to using technology in classroom to make learning engaging and fun, writes Jitendra Karsan, CEO, Safari Kid India, for Elets News Network (ENN).

Jitendra Karsan CEO, Safari Kid India

T

he key to a successful learning experience and any early childhood education lies in the interaction and bond formed between a child and his/her teacher. By taking students beyond their textbooks or immediate surroundings, technology enables a teacher in explaining various concepts in an interesting manner using videos, apps, online quizzes and other interactive content. For example, before a trip to a local zoo, teachers can ask students to visit zoo’s website and thus asking children to discover about different animals by going through the educational videos, info graphics or animations. Using technology enables teachers to design unique learning environments for their students. This enables a positive and comforting environment along with a stronger teacher-student bond which can be used to enhance students’ learning outcomes and foster strong interactions with them. Early learners aged 1 to 8 are always interested in using newly learnt skills, whether it is speaking, writing, drawing or using numbers. Children at this age are also very active and curious. For them, it is difficult to sit for long, which is why they need frequent changes the way they are being taught. Teachers often include dance, play, sports or recitation to keep them engage and technology helps them take their efforts to a next level. Exploration of technology, whether is in the form of a computer, tablet or a new tool can effectively help them expand, enrich and individualise the overall curriculum. Technology is not only limited to interaction within the classrooms only but also helpful in documentation, assessment, instructions and support that enable teachers to create a more effective teaching-learning environment. For instance, teachers can share their students’ progress with parents online or use specific apps to plan lessons and at the same time explore new examples while using interactive media. For example, at Safari Kid, we have an app that enables the parents

24

september 2018

to see their children’s progress and actively engage with their teachers to understand the progress on coursework or any other queries. While the role of technology slowly percolates to education and learning of early learners, it is a must to equip and train teachers to share content that is developmentally appropriate, non-racist, non-sexist, non-biased towards religion or any community. Furthermore, not all education related apps are beneficial. Teachers should be able to differentiate between that and provide only the best content to their students. The best learning tools integrate multimedia features in a way that flows smoothly with the topics and learning goals. Too many bells, tabs or whistles can distract children and may interfere with the learning process. A good quality educational app/website/technical tool will present content in a meaningful context that actively engages with the child and allows for creative exploration. The percolation of technology and media is essential in our lives. Education in that sense too should use technology as a catalyst to widen the horizon of learning, rather than being seen as an antidote to it. New approaches to design learning experiences help in personalising learning for every child as they have individual learning curve. Additionally, information about interactions, preferences as well as collaboration (records of how learners can find concepts more enriching with the help of technology, how much time they are spending on which module, etc.) can create new streams of database that enable institutions and teachers to understand learners in contextualised manner.

n his famous article “Software eats the world” which turned out to be quite prophetic, Marc Andreesesen, creator of Netscape browser, predicted that more and more physical world services and goods will turn digital as the technology will progress. Think of anything that you do daily; a tremendous amount of digital technology is involved with it. Some of them are tangible like Google Maps, Email, WhatsApp, smartphones, computers, TVs and pictures that you use daily.

26

september 2018

Some are not tangible but, the food you buy at super market, the flight you take, the news you read and full body health check-ups are only possible because of the advent progress of digital technology behind them. The integration of technology in every field is accelerating with aggressive adoption of machine learning, artificial intelligence and smart and IoT enabled devices. A vast majority of Indian parents and educators started their life in pre-computer, preinternet era. Their education was based on text books, hearsay and parents’ wisdom. They saw the arrival of TV, cable TV, computers, internet, and smart phones. Remember the hue and cry when TVs first made it to homes and Doordarshan introduced Chitrahaar and Sunday movies? A lot of parents thought that was going to spoil their kids and it would affect their young minds. Then came the cable TV with different channels related to news, entertainment and music etc, TV became a 24X7 phenomenon and once again parents and educators struggled how to live with this phenomenon to regulate the TV time

educators around the world are curating and creating educational content for kids to learn and explore on their own. There are thousands of amazing learning tools, millions of how to do videos and hundreds of millions of kids are online around the world to form groups, develop interests and create amazing stuff that was not possible just a decade ago. Once again, parents, educators and society in general have widely diverse views on whether kids should allow to use an iPad or a Smartphone. Irrespective of our views and apprehensions, the kids have already embraced these devices. It is their tool to build their future and the future is only getting more digital and more technologically advanced. The good news is, there are several best practices that can be easily implemented both at school and at home. Government agencies, NGOs and peer funded focus groups all over the world are studying the impact of mobile in a child’s life and are coming with simple guidelines to mitigate the negative effects and to make the best use of it. As guardians, it’s our job to educate ourselves and to educate our children about how to use these devices with discipline and structure. for children. Today, almost every household has television as an essential appliance. It has become a part of our lives. Computers were lucky. Initially they were tools for coding and were revered. Then they were connected to the Internet. Internet opened a world of unlimited online gaming to comics to music and to movies. Once again, there was a huge resistance in allowing kids to browse Internet. Today, a laptop or a desktop connected to Internet is essential in any household and nobody can imagine not letting children use a computer. When we look back, on introduction of new technology, the generation comfortable with the technology’s previous versions was always apprehensive of the modern technology. But the new generation figured out a way to harness it and to invent the new set of tools for using new versions of technology. Today, we are living in a smart phone era. Assessment in Preschool

Importance of Assessment to Impart Quality Education to Young Learners

28

Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students to know about their learning levels. But, how do assessments help young learners in their holistic development, explores Elets News Network (ENN).

E

arly childhood education, which emerged only in the last few decades, comes with a horde of benefits ranging from better socialising skills, exposure to diversity, greater coordination skills, and increased level of confidence and creativity. However, we must never underestimate the power of early learning systems and programmes and we also need to understand how critical assessments are when it comes to evaluating and improving these very programmes so as to suit the different developmental needs of children. This is where the concept of regular assessments comes into picture. Why are assessments important when it comes to early childhood education? Can these assessments be used to ensure that a child gains the most when it comes to their journey of learning? Unlike standardised tests, that all our little ones may be exposed to as they grow older, preschool assessments do not come with right or wrong answers. They are in fact means of evaluating a child’s social, emotional and cognitive skills so that the programmes can be fine-tuned to meet their development needs. Regular assessments, therefore, help an educator plan individualised instructions for a child as well as for a group of children who are in the same developmental stage. Methods of assessments are widespread from observing a child interacting in their different learning zones to the maintenance of regular records for every child and to assessment tools that are useful in evaluating a child’s social, emotional and cognitive abilities. The assessment methods range from formal methods to those that guide decisions around a child’s performance in a particular programme. According to Priya Krishnan, CEO and Founder, KLAY Prep Schools and Daycare, “It is important for us to understand that no child learns at

the same pace and what may work for one child may not for another. However, it is only through observing and documenting a child’s performance over the course of a year or over a few months, that an educator can gather details on a child’s development. Incorporating changes post-these assessments can go a long way when it comes to making programmes richer and more beneficial for our little ones.” It is important to stress on early learning systems and educational assessments but at the same time it is equally important to keep in mind that a programme can have maximum impact on a child’s life only when parents and teachers will be in coordination with each other for kids’ education. They have to work together towards supporting a child intellectually and socially in their crucial formative years. Assessments, if correctly and carefully conducted, are a valuable aid when it comes to discovering and nurturing children to reach their maximum potential. However, in the process, we as parents and educators must not forget that at the end of the day, learning is also about having lots of fun. The moment we eliminate fun from a child’s life, an entire educational programme will be meaningless. Let us, as educators and parents, make learning a joyful experience and proudly watch our children turning into confident and sensitive human beings ready to take on the world!

The brand has spread over to 200 locations in India and neighbouring countries in less than 9 years. The child-centric curriculum and approach towards early childhood learning have been widely appreciated by the industry and the parent community, says Sneha Rathor, CEO – Academics & innovations, SANFORT Group of Schools, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). What have been the key factors behind the success of your school’s brand?

We have circle times where we allow children to express themselves, and explore their own thoughts and understand themselves better

34

september 2018

We have a strong branding, demographic research, and child-centric curriculum that parents love. Our curriculum involves effective, time-tested elements of traditional learning infused with cutting-edge technology, which bridges the learning gap. Our curriculum is crafted in the hexagram of ‘Core Value Circle’ which helps children in the Refinement of their senses, Gross & Fine Motor Development, Creative Development, Social development, Psychological & Personality Development and Practical life care for Self, Others and for the Environment. Sanfort with their unremitting research system have created an innovative curriculum and interactive pedagogy for preschoolers and have revolutionised the Indian preschool learning system. Sanfort is pioneer partner of TRINITY College of LONDON for The Trinity Stars Award to encourage the teaching and learning of English language through drama, music and performance for early learners. We are also an active member of “British Association of Early Childhood Education” – U.K. & “Preschool Learning Alliance- U. K.”

What kind of infrastructure & facilities are provided at Sanfort to make the learning delightful, yet keeping children safe? We believe that learning initiates from the environment itself, hence we have a beautiful childfriendly infrastructure with colourful thematic classrooms, activity area with lots of role play models, puzzles, blocks, educational games, toys and play equipment, our infrastructure is so attractive that children are not willing to go back home. Dealing with little one’s safety and security is our prime concern; hence we have anti-skid flooring in all the

classrooms & activity area and soft spongy flooring in the play area for the safety of the children. All the doors are fitted with finger-guards and the school premises remains under CCTV surveillance.

Sanfort uses “True Smart Learning System”, how it helps the students in their learning? Our classrooms are set up with world-class technology-enabled teaching tools with the objective of making teaching more effective and funfilled. Children play on the large touch panels with specially designed software and simultaneously learn alphabet, numbers, shapes and various early learning concepts. Our software is in sync with our curriculum, which gives students an experience of joyful learning.

What is Sanfort’s approach for the Holistic Development of children?

Moreover, we believe that to create an engaging learning environment you need skilled teachers. At Sanfort we empower our teachers by equipping them with in-service orientation, education and intensive training programs to help them become a skilled and powerful early year educators.

You are on Franchise Model and in a franchise model, a lot depends upon your franchise partner what are your criteria to choose the right franchise partner and how well you bond with them? Franchising is a great way to expand as we have people to manage our schools without tapping much of our own capital because franchisee owns the cost to open and operate the branch and will work much harder than employees. But in a franchise model success or failure of a brand depends on the success or failure of the franchises. So, it is very important to choose the right partner. We look into their financial status, social reputation, their educational background and their passion towards this profession. Once we chose a partner we give them proper training and inputs to run the school and complete handholding to make the venture successful.

preschool Perspective

As times change, so does our approach to teaching and learning. Though we are a technology-enabled preschool chain but we never forget about the basics. Our teachers are being encouraged to get back to the basics by focusing on the classic teaching methods with a holistic approach to support early childhood development. We strongly believe in the principle of exploring and discovering. Childhood should be about free play, where children are allowed to play with sand & mud, fall and dust themselves up and discover their natural self through play. We strive to provide an enriching learning experience to early learners by creating a tranquil, curious and challenging environment that foster’s their social, physical, emotional and cognitive development. We create an engaging environment by using colourful and intriguing concepts, activity areas and space for creative and free play. Supporting children as they learn at their own pace is important for development in the early years and we always encourage and take every opportunity to explore their interests by valuing and nurturing their individuality. We have circle times where we allow children to express themselves, and explore their own thoughts and understand themselves better. We believe in understanding every child individually, which helps us to guide children to discover their passion and turn it into a learning opportunity. By building a strong relationship with them we create a strong engaging and communicating environment. At Sanfort we aim to imbibe social, moral and cultural values in early learners through various events and celebrations, which induces in them the feeling of respect and concern towards people, society and environment.

Childhood should be about free play, where children are allowed to play with sand & mud, fall and dust themselves up and discover their natural self through play

What is the vision and plans of Sanfort? Today, we have more than 200 schools and adding 10-12 preschools every month. We are targeting to reach 500 schools by the end of the financial year 2020 and we also have strong plans to open company-owned primary and K-12 schools in tier2 and tier3 cities.

MySchool: Celebrating Childhood and Learning

M

ySchool is a premium preschool in Lucknow that redefines how parents, mentors, educators and practitioners look at early childhood learning. MySchool brings together the most comprehensive set of practices, values and experiences that have evolved in recent times. Our state-of-the-art infrastructure combined with innovative teaching methodologies makes us pioneers of new-age education in the city. We are an emerging brand in the city and with our progressive and enterprising approach we are looking forward to becoming trendsetters of the education sector. We endeavour to deliver education that is not just at par with metro cities, but also with the international standard. In our attempt to bring together a multitude of experiences and best practices, MySchool is the only preschool in Lucknow to have collaborated with one of the most reputed names in the field of learning, Shri Educare Limited (SEL) of Shri Ram Schools. Most parents don’t give preschool education the importance it deserves. They think it doesn’t really matter in the long-run and that the real learning starts with primary education. However, according to education experts, preschool is essential for a child’s education. It’s the time when brain development is at its fastest. Many researches corroborate that the skills such as life skills, good habits, attitude towards life, etc learnt during preschool years remain helpful throughout one’s life. Children who have been to a good preschool perform better in life ahead. We consider it as our responsibility to give the right start from the very beginning to each of our student. Our curriculum is an amalgamation of all the best techniques of the three methods of teaching: Montessori, Play Way and Reggio Emilia.

Education at MySchool is completely experiential. Our entire curriculum is activity based and we are strictly against rote learning. Students are given hands on learning of every concept. Values and etiquettes are taught through storytelling and role play. Our activities are designed to tickle the curiosity of the child and they are encouraged to ask questions. We inculcate decision-making capabilities among the students by exposing them to different situations. This makes the children independent and confident. Our building is built on the BaLa concept that is Building as a learning aid. Its spaces have been decorated and furnished in a way to provide a wide-ranging stimulus to children to explore and learn through play. The School has been designed and developed in full conformity with the WHO norms for education spaces. The design complies with the best international standards, which is the first for Lucknow. We aim to be not only Lucknow’s, but Uttar Pradesh’s first green preschool, with closely monitored carbon footprints and sustainable design and processes.

Little ONE – Offering Kids Home-Like Centre of Learning When a child enters the portals of a school for the first time, he looks for something similar to his home which has a warm, welcoming environment, to feel secured. At Little ONE we ensure this. Once the child is feeling secured then there is active learning taking place, says Marina Cyril, Principal, Little ONE - The Jaipuria Preschool, Kanpur, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). What are the measures required to bring the Indian preschool education sector at par with the global standards?

We at Little ONE believe that the early years of children are most important as they lay the foundation to form their character

38

september 2018

Children by nature are enthusiastic and curious. They are eager to explore and play provided they get a scope to do this. It is essential that in preschools the focus should shift to make our students self expressive and critical thinkers rather than products of rote memorization. A lot of learning through playful activities should be encouraged. Though it is messy but it takes them to unknown territories. Child development should be initiated through active play across all domains i.e. physical, cognitive, social & emotional. Ageappropriate activities such as structured hands on learning, group story-time and themed activities should become the base of the curriculum.

How do preschools help in the growth of children and what are the basic principles that Little ONE The Jaipuria Preschool adopted to be a successful preschool brand? When a child enters the portals of a school for the first time, he looks for something similar to his home which has a warm, welcoming environment, to feel secured. At Little ONE we ensure this. Once the child is feeling secured then there is active learning taking place. There is a lot of emphasis on building the overall personality of a child with focus on learning social skills in a group setting. Everyday is a blend of songs, stories, outdoor activities, art, skating, football, dance etc. We lay our full trust in every child and with a positive

approach try to bring about a positive change. Most of the activities are theme based and children thoroughly enjoy the practical knowledge imparted. Activities like drive to the river side, biscuit factory, sitting with friends and savouring the ice lollies, nature walk, observing simple science experiments give a learning environment to our children. Music and movement classes help a lot in developing motor skills. Actions like Finger play stories make children build upon their conversation skills and be expressive.

In this modern era of innovations, what special methodologies have been adopted by Little ONE, The Jaipuria Preschool for students’

holistic development? We at Little ONE believe that the early years of children are most important as they lay the foundation to form their character. Therefore we provide diverse experience of learning and adopting social skills which will be required in the years ahead. We know that the brain development is highest in the first four years of a child. Children at this age are very good learners and want to seek new information. Hence, we have ensured that our curriculum is rich of relevant content and appropriate information & materials. We have worked on a curriculum which is eclectic and combination of best methodologies. The curriculum is based on thematic units through which the teachers construct an integrated approach to learning, thereby leveraging the early childhood domains. We believe that children gain a deeper understanding when they make connections across multiple domains. For example, if we take the theme to be ‘Monsoon’, the vocabulary building words would be related to this season. Word problems could be related to insects found during the monsoon. The rhymes / songs for the month would also be based on the theme.

“People generally remember 10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear, 30% of what they see, and 50% of what they see and hear.” Combining the senses, therefore, is of benefit to students of all learning styles. During the preschool years, young children are actually developing a sense of taking initiative and enhance creativity. They are curious about the world around them and about learning. They are exploring their ability to create and communicate using a variety of media. Digital technologies provide one more outlet for them to demonstrate their creativity and learning. These digital technologies can be handy to celebrate children’s accomplishments being displayed on a digital projector or on a school website. Digital activities include recording of children’s stories about their drawings or their games, making digital audio or video files to document their progress, exploring digital story telling with them, co-creating digital books with photographs of children’s game or creative work and attaching digital-audio files with the child as a narrator. The Smart Board technology too ensures better engagement and understanding.

Learning: A Fun Exercise Not a Burden Real education begins before a person learns to speak and continues throughout their entire life. Children learn through their surroundings and all their success in future depends on their ability to learn from these surroundings, writes Sonal Ahuja, Founder, House of Learning and Co-Founder, Shri Ram Foundation preschools, for Elets News Network (ENN).

A

ll of us have significantly observed that learning ability is stronger in infants than adults. As we grow up and start dwelling ourselves into the prevailing education system, we start adopting clichéd methods of learning and ultimately what we gain is not wisdom but just information which doesn’t stay with us and withers away in no time. It’s crucial to understand that learning is the key to a child’s future. But, do we know there are tricks to learn? Have we ever thought of teaching our children those tricks or methods that can make learning a joyful experience for a child? There are ways to make children and adults undergo the process of learning in the most systematic and organised manner. Listed are a few pointers that one should work on:

Nurturing learning habits among kids “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Most of the times, the concepts, and learning structures are designed in a way that the learner starts finding ways to escape studying. The idea is to create the habit in a learner to know and gain knowledge. If children want to learn something, they’ll do it in every possible way. We must make them believe that there is no end to the plethora of knowledge in this world and thinking ‘you know it all’ wouldn’t work. The idea is to drive the urge for knowledge in them that will make learning fun in itself.

The art of questioning Learning is not only about reading anything and grabbing the information. It is actually about studying and asking a lot of questions. We must leave children free to be open to clearing all their doubts while they learn. This will help them explore and discover more. The problem is that people are not aware of the right way to study and therefore learning becomes difficult for them.

It’s not about passing exams Are you telling your child to learn from a textbook because he/she has a test to pass? The race to finish curriculums, score exceptionally great and be

the topper of the class leads to practices like rote learning and muddling information. Every child has a pace with which he/she learns but the whole rat race finishes their thirst for knowledge and leaves them helpless.

How is your learning?

child

actually

Someone rightly said if you’re not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you. It’s imperative to acknowledge that how we learn is a much more important question than why we learn. There are some tricks and techniques that educators have to make learning an interesting endeavour for a child. Overcoming barriers that disrupt the learning process is an extremely important step. The solution is to identify them. We have to follow the right process to learn anything. With this if schools also start looking into their own culture and setup, they will find many loopholes

[ dl.eletsonline.com ] The Largest Portal on Innovation in Education in Asia and the Middle East

There is no room for mistakes As Jim Rohn, an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker, once stated: “If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.” Our education system follows the standard set of rules and regulations that have been passed over the generations. Mistakes and risks are the last things schools and parents allow the child to take. How will children learn unless they experiment? This ultimately forces them to follow the mainstream and shuns their ability to think out of the box.

The fear of failure Since childhood, we are forced to work hard on different subjects where we’re expected to score magnificently well in each one of them. What if the child is good at literature and mathematics doesn’t interest him/her? But the kind of pressure and fear of failure parents and teachers inculcate in a child’s mind leads him/her to focus on abilities

digitallearningonline

rather than the creative capacity and expertise. Schools believe that it is imperative to create a standard curriculum for students to follow. However, it is not mandatory. Schools can create divisions depending upon different areas of interests which students can freely choose from.

Studying and learning are not same Attending school, memorising facts and reading lessons is entirely different from gaining knowledge and experiencing learning. It is not important if a student is studying or doing something else, he/she might learn out of it too. Learning is an experiential concept. Being in environments that are learning-oriented, moving beyond textbooks and indulging into discussions is much more important than memorizing information.

Strive for excellence, not for grades Competition and comparison have led to severe problems. Students, from the very beginning, are encouraged to be amongst the “top five” in the class, thereby, igniting the spirit of competition. It is this pressure only that has led to suicide cases over the years. Therefore, it is crucial to accept how every child is unique, has different interests and will find a way to a sustainable life. The purpose of education is to bring out the best in a child. Let’s make sure they don’t lose themselves in the process.

It’s crucial to understand that learning is the key to a child’s future. But, do we know there are tricks to learn? Have we ever thought of teaching our children those tricks or methods that can make learning a joyful experience for a child?

in their processes. Recently, during a talk at one of the reputed schools, a question from senior student made me ascertain some crucial aspects of the education system. The question was, “What should I do for better grades?” I asked why were grades so important to him? He replied: “That’s how you get into a good college which ultimately gives you a stable job.” I don’t need to emphasise the importance of education in building a strong nation. But there are loopholes that are destroying the actual abilities of children and killing their creativity as individuals. Let’s have a look at some of them:

Ranking Preschools

The Methodology “India’s Top Preschool Ranking 2018” is divided into two categories -- Standalone Preschool Ranking and Franchise Preschool Ranking. The rankings to different preschools have been allotted on the basis of various parameters listed below under the aforementioned categories. In this perception-based ranking, standalone preschools have been covered in five zones -- North, South, East, West and Central, whereas franchise preschools have been covered from various cities of the country. Ranking top preschools of India is one of the most challenging tasks, given the large size of the educational ecosystem. To start with, the ranking questionnaires were sent to over 1,500 preschools across the country. The response on this ranking activity was overwhelming, with over 1,200 schools replying to our queries.

Methodology for Preschool Ranking Parameters for Standalone Preschool Ranking: Standalone category includes the preschools which do not sell their franchise. Preschools under this category set up their own early childhood education centres in a city or across different cities of the country. The self owned centres are managed by a single committee or trust. Following parameters have been considered to rank Standalone Preschools:

Holistic Development of Students: Ranking under this parameter is done on the basis how preschools focus on addressing all of its students’ emotional, physical, relational, intellectual, creative and spiritual needs. This perspective to development encourages caregivers and teachers to look at the child in entirety instead of focusing on individual aspects of personality. Infrastructure: This is one of the key parameters in ensuring healthy, safe and hygienic

learning environment for kids in preschools. The schools were evaluated on the basis of campus aspects of classrooms and transitional spaces and supervisable circulation spaces (such as hallways and corridors).

Pedagogy: It refers broadly to the deliberate process of cultivating development within a

given culture and society. From this point of view, ranking of preschool is adjudged based on three basic components: (1) Curriculum or what is being taught (2) Teaching methodology or the ways followed to teach the toddlers and (3) Methods followed by preschools to develop cognitive and affective skills essentially required for successful functioning of kids in society that education is designed to promote.

Student Enrollment: This factor of ranking focuses on the number of students enrolled annually. Under this parameter, a detailed study of student enrollment for last five years along with enrollment of girls and boys in the preschool is done. After a comparative analysis of last five-year report, ranks are allotted to a preschool in this segment.

Innovation in ICT Usage: In today’s competitive and fast changing world, Information

preschool ranking 2018

Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role for a student’s overall development. Under this parameter, factors like, promoting latest technology tools for learning, keeping best security practices through ICT, innovative teaching and use of ICT to link home and school effectively have been considered to rank the preschools.

Parameters for Franchise Preschool Ranking: Education is India’s fastest growing franchise business sector after food and beverage. The preschools by selling their franchises establish centres across the country for fulfilling basic educational needs of the children in their early learning years. The ranking of preschool franchises is done on the basis of following parameters:

Success in Franchise: To determine the ranks under this parameter, various important factors like, standards followed by all the franchise of a brand are followed or not, employee training, services provided to customers, involvement with the community, communication rate between franchisor and franchise are considered. Infrastructure: This parameter is very important to ensure healthy, pleasant yet

comfortable learning environment for kids in preschools. To rank a preschool, factors like campus area, total built-up area, safety and security, classrooms conditions and transitional spaces are considered.

Innovation in Pedagogy: Pedagogy is the discipline that deals with the theory and practice of education. Innovation in pedagogy draws more interest of kids towards the subject. So, it is an important parameter to decide rank for a franchise preschool. Quality Assurance: Quality assurance is the systematic process to check whether a product or service being developed is meeting specified requirements or not. For a preschool, quality assurance is to boost customer confidence and a school’s credibility. Quality assurance helps a preschool franchise to improve work processes and efficiency, and enable it to compete with others. In order to get ranked among the top preschools franchises, they have to follow and abide by the certain quality standards. Preferred Preschool Franchise: The parameter is about the preschool preferences of parents for their wards. Usually the preference is decided on the basis of a preschools chain’s goodwill among the public, its quality of education, facilities like security and safety of kids, hygiene and transportation arrangements. Basically the parameter decides how a preschool is better than others in every aspect.

Government Speakers Dhan Singh Rawat conference report

Higher Education Minister, Government of Uttarakhand

“Uttarakhand has 31 universities and over 500 educational institutes including IITs and NITs. Around three lakh students are pursuing Higher Education and around 12 lakh students are pursuing school education in the State. For the first time, we are going to oraganise “Gyan Kumbh” in Uttarakhand in September and October in which we are inviting 832 chancellors from across the country. We are also inviting education ministers, education secretaries and heads of all the premier institutions across the country in the conclave.” “The Uttarakhand Government has recruited teachers through State Public Service Commission which resulted into improved attendance of students in the institutions of the State. The attendance increased to 68% from 47 % within a short span of time. When we talk of Higher Education, we are talking about the future of the state and the nation. Our professors and teachers are capable and qualified enough to impart world class education if given the chance and facilities. I can see zeal in our teachers.”

Temjen Imna Along

Minister, Higher & Technical Education, Government of Nagaland

“India is a young country with 65 percent of its population under 35 and half the country’s population is under 25. Education is needed for the youth and country to grow, but due to lack of funds education institutes are suffering in the country with shortage of faculty and facilities. Country’s education institutes are becoming more of ‘Education Industry’ by adopting smart classes and western culture but losing our traditions and culture. Similarly, the education policies are made sitting in Delhi by government on pan-India basis without knowing or verifying the culture of region or State.” “Due to such policies Higher Education in Nagaland and other states has been neglected for far too long, this was one reason why students from Nagaland spend crores of rupees every year in pursuit of quality Higher Education outside the State. This underscored the need to revamp Higher Education in the State to impart quality education and to check huge money being drained to outside the state.”

Dr A Ashok

Principal Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, Government of Gujarat

Secretary and Commissioner, Board of Intermediate Education, Government of Telangana

“By the time students start pursuing Higher Education, most of their character is formed. Whenever anyone thinks about education, it is more to do with primary education and secondary education which is the root for Higher Education. The country’s present Higher Education system was aimed at creating machine out of human being and showcasing students as models for selling a product. Students are being taught learning books and instead of innovations. The Government in Gujarat is now focusing on innovations and start-ups at college-level.”

Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education has around 10 lakh students. Education in class 12 is very important as it helps students to give a direction to their higher education. It acts as bridge between school education and Higher Education. Class 12 is the stage at which if quality education is imparted, it helps them realise their dreams. We in Telangana are trying to empower school students digitally. We are using Information Communication Technology (ICT) education paradigm and it is acting as a game changer for teachers as well as for students.

Ashutosh A T Pednekar

Secretary, Higher Education and Commissioner College Education, Government of Rajasthan

“Rajasthan Government is tying up with various companies and IGNOU for skill based development of students. It has already tied up with CISCO and Microsoft for training of students and faculty from colleges in the State. Students will be awarded certificates on successful completion of the various courses. Another pain point of Rajasthan’s Higher Education system is lack of faculty. In last couple of years, we have recruited more than 2,000 faculties resulting into 60 percent increase in the number of faculties.”

Anil D Sahasrabudhe

Director(PMSSS & SWAYAM), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India

When we talk about School Education and Higher Education, we divide them into two segments but education is a continuous process. Education begins when a child starts learning from his/her parents, brothers and sisters and goes to school then high school then intermediate, graduation and continues for whole life. Education helps us to showcase our inert talents with the help of teachers and educators.

The conferences like this are the best platform to discuss pain points of students and teachers as they are the most important stakeholders of education sector. The first thing any baby does just after his/her birth is crying. It is his/her way of communicating that I am hungry or sleepy to mother. The same communication is needed to influence students.

Additional Commissioner Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan

Secretary, Higher Education and Commissioner College Education, Government of Rajasthan

We have established 1,200 Kendriya Vidyalyas so far including three abroad. Almost 1.3 million students are studying in these schools. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has 25 regional offices and five zonal institutes of education and training. As a commom teaching-learning process followed by us at Kendriya Vidyalayas, teachers and books are the source of knowledge and students are at receiving end. One thing in this process is very important that the processes should always be interactive for effective learning.

We have a world which is changing rapidly due to technology which is advancing at a scorching pace. The way we are experiencing the world is very different from the world it was experienced seven years ago. 3-D printers are revolutionising the way manufacturing is happening in the world. Cloud services are enabling you to reach the remotest corners of the world irrespective of the purposes. Whether it is knowledge delivery or access of knowledge, technology is helping the education sector to transform at a rapid rate.

In 2000, every country in the world, their presidents and prime ministers agreed on 2,000 millennium goals for countries across the world to be at the same basic standard of living. Those global goals also include one course of education under which the people will be nurtured with the basic reading and writing skills. Other countries are supposed to plan and complete those developmental goals in 15 years whereas Venezuela achieved those goals in only eight years.

Ralph Brenner

Estonian education system is among the top ranked education systems of the world. One of the possible reasons for such a good ranking is that the first thing students learn is the Estonian language. After mastering this language, elementary school seems relatively easy to the students. From an early age, Estonian school system offers a safe and positive learning environment encouraging both creativity and logical thinking.

There is greater value in getting the happiness what you are doing rather than doing it again and again half-heartedly. I travelled more than 70 countries and learnt more about social-emotional learning. I convert my experience into study material which is being used in almost all the countries I visited. Our material affects over 14 million children of nursery to class 12 in a year. We have also partnered with Delhi Government in its recently announced initiative “Happiness Programme.

We work across the education spectrum from school to vocational and Higher Education, research institutions and Government. We are trying to enhance employability outcomes as well as learning outcomes among young people. But the kind of talented students we got here was overwhelming. We also have a branch of our school at Lakhimpur, a small town in Uttar Pradesh. I feel proud to say that this year’s ISC topper is from that branch. So, India has great pool of talent irrespective of the location. The only thing is that we need to nurture that talent in the best possible way.

I urge all the policymakers and all the edu-leaders present here to rethink that is it really needed for our children to gather such huge amounts of information? The quantum of skills gathered against the quantum of information is really being skewed. We also take care of this thing while hiring the professionals at Ebix. Rather than giving them test, we crosscheck their skills to gather information.

We have a chain of 625 preschools, primary schools, 10+2 schools across India, Nepal and Bangladesh. IT helps in teaching learning process. We have been using smart class programme, audio-video supplement to help students. Backend infrastructure of our schools is all IT-led. IT is also helping on the front of safety and security of students. At the same time, we should not become over-dependent on technology.

Reading with comprehension and analysis will help them to gain the skills at faster pace.

We believe that unleashing the maximum potential in every child is one of the highest leverage actions we as a society can take to build a better future. We won’t stop until every student in our country graduates with clarity of concepts given not only in text books but also are ready to contribute to the world with the highest level of confidence.

A school is not only about classrooms and books. The school is about the experiences that your teacher brings in to make the curriculum come alive. Another thing which is very important for a school is the wealth collected by every school year after year. This wealth is the alumni who completed their studies from Kindergarten to class 12th or even completed one academic year in the school. It is very important to harness this wealth.

Perspective of a university two-three decades back was to produce worthy citizens and talented professionals. In last two-three decades, things have changed as nowadays, perspective of university includes participation of stakeholders, academic environment along with many other factors.

I have been participating in conferences for 18 years. In those years we have seen Vision 2010, Vision 2015 and Vision 2020 of the universities. Now, we are talking about vision 2030. But we don’t need such long duration visions now. As these long term visions will restrict us from incorporating the much needed reforms at the most appropriate time.

Brijesh Karia

National Business Head Robomate+ Around three years ago, we conducted a survey with around 5,000 - 6,000 students. The revelations in the survey were very surprising. Almost 70 percent students revealed that studying in schools is very beneficial as teachers are connected to us, they give examples, they create humour and many more activities. But, at home it is very difficult to study at the same pace as there is no such connect which forced us to join a coaching or tuition. That is where Robomate + help students to study in home the same ways as of school.
