Ranking the Finest in Indian Private Engineering Education The meaning of education is steadily acquiring a new definition with each passing year, creating a huge scope to learn, unlearn, and educate in new fashion. Finding out the most suitable institute or college as per one’s academic prowess and financial means most often proves a Herculean task, especially in engineering stream. Considering the complications of zeroing-in on the most suitable option, we decided to devote our Digital Learning magazine’s latest issue to “State-wise Ranking of Private Engineering Institutes and Colleges -2017”, conducted by a perception-based methodology by a jury involving experts. We’ve tried to highlight how various engineering institutes and colleges are fairing in different areas to enhance quality of education. Hence, in a novel bid which involved the service providers inviting service seekers to rank their performance on an open platform, we have brought out this ranking issue. The objective is to serve all those linked to an engineering college, i.e., parents, teachers, educators and the college management, decipher the average to the top-class private engineering institutes and colleges in India. Annual Resource Guide: Sourcing Educational Prerequisites

Digital Learning Annual Resource Guide 2017, is taking forward its legacy and previous years’ success. A high demand of resource guide in the market has compelled us to bring out a new and improved version for better insights. The guide hopes to enable various stakeholders including engineering aspirants to make an informed decision, writes Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN).

O

ver the years, education sector has gone through several transitions. Along with the world, the learning industry has witnessed a string of technological innovations in the sector. Adoption of technology has changed the face of education industry from “chalk and talk” methods to digital learning that has streamlined the teaching-learning experiences. Tech-

nological innovations in the sector have also paved the way for rapid expansion in the number of education e-solution providers in the country. From preschool admissions to campus management solutions for higher educational institutions and from K12 education technology providers to cutting edge education products – there seems to be no dearth of solution providers in the market. Technologies in education sector are becoming more and more viable and user-friendly. The objective of this re-

source guide is to provide the education stakeholders a clear understanding on the technology solutions to ease the teaching, learning and school management processes. The issue hopes to help readers in not only getting the highlights of existing technologies but also inform people about the latest and prospective development and innovations in the education industry. Nowadays, technology-enabled learning and teaching have become essential for educational institutions, from preschools to universities. Globally, not only governments or school leaders but teachers and

parents are also considering technology as a crucial part of children’s education. Nurturing students’ knowledge and skills related to Information Communication Technology (ICT) during their studies provide an important ground to them in life. The huge expansion of IT enabled learning in India also necessitates a guide, which can help academicians to be informed and also choose from the various solutions available. The Digital Learning Resource Guide, since past, has been playing an instrumental role in helping academicians and education stakeholders in choosing e- services and infrastructure to suit their requirements. With the influx of new technology and increased connectivity, a focused strategic planning is important to ensure digital learning opportunities for all students and educators. Most school districts have made investments in technology equipment, bandwidth and networking, training teachers and are supporting both the technology and those using it. In 2017 so far, Digital Learning magazine has brought a platform to engage global eduleaders and thought leaders of the industry under one roof during the 8th Elets World Education Summit 2017, Bahrain, held in March. The event was a perfect blend of innovators exhibiting their products and showcasing and synergising learning at a new level. It also encouraged a large number of private players to come up with new solutions and productively utilise their existing technology services for educational concerns. With the help of annual resource guide, we have tried to bring diversified t e ch n o l o g i cal innovations at one place. We have tried to classify the companies as per their products. Details about the classification are as follows: E- learning: There is a plethora of different e-learning systems (otherwise known as Learning Management Systems, or LMSs for short) and methods, which allow courses to be delivered. With the right tool, various processes can be automated such as a course with set materials and automatically marked tests. E-learning is an affordable

(and often free) solution that provides the learners with the ability to fit learning around their lifestyles, effectively allowing even the busiest person to further a career and gain new qualifications. Infrastructure: Even though it is generally said to study one doesn’t need much as he or she should better focus on the study material at hand rather than getting affected by the sundry factors sounding hurdles. But a section of educationalists have a different take on the factors influencing education. They suggest that the basic infrastructure at educational institutions must have following parameters: l The basic facilities like adequate space for students and teachers, a proper temperature to study or teach in besides ventilation, lighting, water, electricity and Internet services, as well as sanitary services and the respective drainage of sewage water l Spaces for the development of rehearsals and practices such as libraries, and natural sciences, information technology, and other labs l Spaces for the development of talents and entertainment, sports, and culture A review of the most recent literature indicates that investments to improve school infrastructure has effects on the educational quality at least in the following three dimensions: College management software: There are many collegemanagement software in market and its use help schools to save time and money both… How? Answer is in elaborated way. The definition and objective has witnessed a transformation. The education, which used to be acquired and treasured in notebooks, is today a mission for many to acquire it while accomplishing various targets linked to it for bright future. Today, colleges face a lot of challenges

on a daily basis just to operate the daily administration. Processes like declaration of results, data management, fees collection, timetable management, attendance management of both staff and students and other similar functions are done manually. Manual work involves a lot of time, energy and resources. Such things can now be performed easily, thanks to college management software. The challenges faced by educational institutions to manage the day-today running of the school are immense. That is why it has become imperative that every engineering institution should have management software to increase efficiency and reduce time and effort. Listed below are twelve reasons why every institution should have a college management system: l E-Communication l Accessible any time any place l Monitoring attendance l Easy knowledge sharing l Customisation and configuration l Comprehensive graphical analysis l Personalised teaching and learning Educational Institutes with Diversified Teaching Techniques: A number of different teaching techniques have evolved due to the transformation in education sector. Interestingly, most of these teaching techniques are very new. The new teaching methods not only involves the use of technology but it also uses the senses of a kid to understand a concept better. Such practices have simply given the classroom education a new lease of life allowing us to approach old ideas in new ways: l Flipped Classroom l Design Thinking l Self Learning l Gamification l Social Media There is an array of free learning and teaching tools available for students and teachers which can be used to encourage engagement, participation and a sense of fun into the classroom. Teachers can create an interactive and dynamic classroom environment to test and enhance student’s knowledge. n digitalLEARNING

GL Education:

FINER METHODS

for Enhanced Learning Schools around the globe are using innovative methods effectively to support teaching and to ensure better learning among students, writes James Neill, International Director, GL Education for Elets News Network (ENN). His association with various schools in last few months revealed that effective use of data and assessments is catering to better teaching and learning.

V

arious schools in India and abroad are using and exchanging technologies, methodologies and pedagogies to nurture global leaders. James Neill has surveyed various schools around the world and tried to find out the best schools in terms of teaching methodologies.

Ashoka Universal School (AUS), Nashik, India

In India, it has been traditional for schools to emphasise children’s learning by rote, a one-size-fits-all approach. But education systems elsewhere focus on the understanding and development of an individual’s abilities and attitudes to allow each student to reach their full potential. Ashoka Universal School (AUS) in Nashik has decided to take this more personalised approach to the education it

offers to its students. Shallu Sethi, Vice Principal, explains: “Children are often taught to succeed in exams by remembering and reproducing data, but we felt our students had deeper capabilities. Over 4,000 children of 3 to 18 years attend our school. They come from a diverse range of backgrounds, nationalities and religions. We wanted a way to explore their individual abilities.” The school now tests their students with the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4), which measures reasoning ability across four areas: verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial ability. It gives valuable insight into students’ strengths and weaknesses, and enables teachers to adapt the teaching methods suitable to the needs of the students. “For example, there was one eight year old boy in Grade three who didn’t excel in class, yet it turned out his spatial ability was the highest in the class – an important indicator for success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. We observed that

his low verbal reasoning was holding him back. Now we focus on his verbal reasoning to help him realise his potential within science and maths.” By analysing whole school data, AUS has been able to clearly identify two weaker areas affecting their students. “The first was the verbal battery where our scores were comparatively low,” Sethi explains. “We’ve realised that some children are not working at the level their abilities suggest. Low literacy among these children is holding them back. We are now taking steps to increase our literacy interventions so that the children are able to realise their potential across science, maths and social sciences”, she said. “The second was quantitative reasoning. The results from two different classes were comparatively low, indicating the need for greater support. Identifying these areas has given us the chance to work on ways to enhance clarity around topics and give additional training to teachers on how to meet learning requirements if appropriate”, she added.

digitallearning.eletsonline.com

Ensuring that teaching staff are supported through this change, the school has shared results with parents so that they can talk about it during open days and effectively enhance their children’s learning. This is only the start of the journey, but with careful planning and providing strong support to the teaching staff, the school is already seeing the benefits. As Shallu Sethi concludes, “I have learnt a lot from CAT4 – it helps in ensuring that we are on the right track for a world class education”.

GEMS Wellington Primary School, Dubai, UAE

Alongside ability, the other key driver of student attainment is attitude. Several studies, with focus on Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), have found that “students can only achieve the highest levels, when they believe that they are in control of their success”. When the OECD looked specifically at the issue of student confidence or self-efficacy on performance in maths, it discovered a definite correlation. “On average, across OECD countries, greater mathematical anxiety is associated with a 34 point lower score in mathematics – equivalent to almost one year of school.” Young people’s attitude towards learning and school therefore matter enormously. Yet educators have not, with some notable exceptions, given them the weight they deserve or identified when attitudes start to change. At GEMS Wellington Primary School in Dubai, the school’s guiding principle is the belief that children need to be happy in order to learn successfully. The school decided to introduce GL Education’s Pupil Attitudes to Self and School (PASS), a robust survey that measures students’ attitudes as learners towards themselves and their school. It helps teachers drill down into any negative mind-sets that may not be obvious in the classroom. In January 2016, the school screened students belonging to grades 2 to 6, across nine factors proven to be linked to key educational goals, such as feelings about school, self-regard and confidence in learning. This led to a target group of 56 children who were identified as at risk of low attainment due to their negative attitudes towards themselves and school. The school’s Senior Leader for Standards, Rosemary Elmes, says: “The results were surprising, as the ‘at risk’ list included children we really didn’t expect. In fact, when we put together a photo gallery of

these children, one senior leadership team member expressed surprise that a particular girl was bubbly and confident in lessons. Yet she didn’t ever do as well at tests as we expected, so it was important to delve further and explore why that might be.” Armed with this information, various programmes of intervention were introduced. The school then re-assessed these children four months later to see what had changed. They were delighted with the results. A 33 per cent improvement across the target group was achieved, which placed all but three children into the top percentile for high satisfaction level in terms of their school experience. A huge change has also been seen

senior school, using CAT4 data alongside coursework, internal and external exams to monitor and improve students’ performance. In 2014-15 they also required all senior school students to sit through the PASS survey, so that they could begin factorising social and behavioural elements into their understanding of student academic potential. The school’s reasoning for this change in data use was based on the need to have a stronger grasp of both students’ outcomes and their true potential so that they could set and deliver more demanding aspirational targets and help them towards more successful entry into tertiary education. Before this, the school had focused more on analysing raw achievement, rather than also considering value-added.

among specific children. For example, one boy in Year three had achieved an 80 per cent improvement across the nine factors. His confidence in himself as a learner had been extremely low, but with targeted encouragement and partner work focusing on how other children achieve, he was able to take those risks and experienced success. His teacher couldn’t believe it was the same child!

Has it been worth it? Unquestionably yes, says Adam. “At a whole-school level, our improvement has been significant, and has been fully ratified both by examination results and by external inspection processes: l Delivery of our best IB 5-Year Review l Our best-ever ISI Inspection Report. Graded ‘Excellent’ in all areas within the school’s remit l Three consecutive years of our bestever IB Average Points Score, reaching 35.5 in 2015 l likewise consecutive best-ever years for our IB Average grade per entry: 5.6 in 2015 l A rising trend across 4 years at IB Grades 6 & 7 l IGCSE: Three of our best years of A*-A performance; IGCSE best-ever A*-C pass rate l The evidence seems clear: knowing our students better has helped us, and them, to reach their full potential.” n

St George’s British International School, Rome, Italy

Can this focus on assessment have an impact on student’s achievement? Yes, when it’s part of a clear strategy supported by strong leadership and high quality teaching, according to Adam Oliver, Vice Principal & Head of Senior School at St George’s British International School in Italy. The school introduced CAT4 in 2010 alongside a redesign of their internal reporting and assessment system. At the same time ,they introduced a new tutoring model in the

learning, whether that’s new teaching methods or the technology used in the classroom. There are a number of innovative subjects that are offered and taught across Cambridge schools. Subjects like Cambridge Global Perspectives, Enterprise and Media Studies provide opportunities for both teachers and learners to think out of the box, practise interdisciplinary approaches and bring creativity into the classroom. These subjects are aimed at enabling learners to take a hands-on approach, such as creating their own media products or setting up and running an enterprise – and this engages them in their own learning, enabling them to communicate in new ways and produce exciting work.

Technological Innovations and Learning

Cambridge continues to become increasingly innovative in using technology in assessment. The board introduced optional on-screen tests for lower secondary learners in 2016 and will consult with schools before introducing on-screen tests for Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Levels. Cambridge understands that not every school is equipped to run computer-based exams and so will continue to offer paper-based alternatives. ith almost all career streams, becoming tough to contest for by each passing year, sending one’s wards to the most suitable and useful edifice of higher education has become literally a Herculean task. But how to determine what is best available option? What should be the benchmarak? Is a highly decorated private engineering college is good enough reason to send one’s young child there or should there be some yardsticks to evaluate any institute considering future challenges of academics and professional career? The purpose of higher education, therefore, should not only limit to building careers but also catering to develop a generation of vibrant minds for the nation. All this was the drive behind conducting a comprehensive ranking of

the private engineering colleges for the fourth consecutive year. The latest ranking also includes information about the world of Indian private engineering colleges, factors and methodology to rank them. The ranking is for all those, who are somehow attached to an engineering college i.e. parents, teachers, educators or the school management.

CRanking Parameters:

The first parameter describes how efficient and learned are the college faculties. It includes their teaching and industry experience as well. Number of full time and visiting faculties is also part of the parameter. Students and admissions defined the sanctioned intake and actual intake of students in the institute. The process followed for the admission is also taken into account while ranking a college. In the process, the institutes have been ranked on the basis of infrastructure, facilities and learning. The hostel

facility in the college, library, laboratories, workshops and other facilities come under this ranking parameter. Learning includes a number of available engineering branches, accreditations from various government and non-government organisations and global collaborations with foreign universities and MNCs. The last parameter, Output has been done by giving 75 per cent importance to placement and 25 per cent to alumni. In placement, the college is ranked on the basis number of students placed, average salary package, list of hiring companies, students opted for entrepreneurship and for higher education. In alumni, marks are given to number of alumni meets, alumni status and industry interface. Engineering college is the phase of youths’ learning where they shape their future while learning basic concepts of a specific engineering trade. The impulse for creation of centres for technical training came during the British Rule in

HIGHER EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

AISECT: Improving Higher

Education Standards from the root level (i.e both in Hindi and English. We are one of the first to provide technical education in Hindi, since 1982). l We include and promote research oriented study to expand the scope of application and new possibilities. l We provide hands on practice with the best state of art lab and training facilities by certified trainers and well qualified experienced faculties. How do you compare the cost of technical education vis-à- vis, say management education?

With adoption of latest technology in higher education, it is very important to match higher education standards with global leaders, says Prof Ashok Gwal, Vice Chancellor, AISECT University in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

W

hat is the importance of innovative pedagogy in the field of technical education?

We are in practice of innovative technical teaching methodology since the inception of our organisation and that is like: l Our teaching and training methodology focal point is skill development. l Most convenient mode of communication is used in our teaching methodology to impart global competency

34

APRIL 2017

digitalLEARNING

As technical education’s base is its practical and skilling up orientation which is possible only with the realistic facilities and provisions in all respect in comparison to management studies technical education has a great scope of cost involvement in keeping pace with the fast changing and technological scenario. India has over 785 Universities, should we expand or consolidate?

We must have some realistic approach for implementing or we say imparting the true education to our society which keeps our heritage, nature, which keeps us upgrading, which keeps us united, keeps us growing, developing and most important keeps happiness of togetherness which is somewhere the true objective of any education system. We believe and think beyond the figures of universities’ numbers although to meet the huge demand it is one of the important aspect. How can India’s higher education system be made robust?

We have some points in this context: l First we need to make realistic and standard justified evaluation and grading system before awarding any degree and certificates. l Need to adopt and align National

Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) on global standards. l In place of generalise form, we must implement very specific application oriented system. the system must be updated in sync with current industry demand. l Need to standardise the professional requirements of trainers and faculties. l Teacher’s special and professional training programmes in positive inspirational atmosphere is required to nurture best talents in teaching. l Authorities to approve and authorise institutions should be very implementive and continuously monitored on some specific standards. In past few years a large number of engineering institutions have closed down. How do you analyse it?

Yes it’s really a noticeable experience and it has many aspects for this situations some of them are as follows: l Lack of skilled trainers and result oriented institutions. l Lack of ethical approach while establishing the institutions. l Lack of fulfilment of prerequisite conditions in admission procedures. l Gap between the industry demand and educational institutions’s supply eventually creating mismatch leading to great unemployable mass. Do you think traditional engineering disciplines are being eclipsed by emerging ones?

To meet the demand, inclination towards emerging disciplines has increased but traditional branches of engineering education can’t be ignored. So traditional approach and specialised emerging disciplines should be synchronised with some special vocational inclusions in the curriculum to inculcate it’s both aspect. n

VIT: Revamping Higher Education in India Seamless efforts for more than three decades made Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) a brand name in the field of engineering education, says Bharat Agarwal, Managing Trustee, Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, in a conversation with Elets News Network (ENN).

G

ive us an overview of your University and its vision.

Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) has become a brand in the field of engineering education and is amongst the most sought after institute in Western India. Having started with three UG programmes in 1983, the Institute now offers nine UG, eight PG and six PhD Programmes. VIT was the first private institute to obtain academic autonomy in 2008. Since then, the institute has successfully evolved its “learning model” which is acclaimed by all strata of society. The institute envisions gaining global recognition while staying focused on its contribution in the development of the Country. Is there any distinct branch of engineering that your institute offers? What is its scope as far as career prospect is concerned?

Since 1983 VIT offers a unique programme in Industrial Engineering. It is a blend of

engineering management, ergonomics, optimisation and supply chain related concepts. The programme inculcates a holistic approach in students to solve broad level problems of industry and society in general. There are immense opportunities of higher studies in Industrial Engineering after graduating in it. Apart from manufacturing, Industrial Engineering principles are applied in service sectors such as health care, transport etc. The diversity in knowledge acquired by industrial engineers enables them to hone the entrepreneurial skills. Are you employing some distinct teaching methodology to equip your students with an edge required in the market in near future?

The institute practices DT-enabled teaching methodologies to place its students in good companies. Effective use of platforms such as Google Classroom, submission of video assignments, use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) etc allow the students to learn beyond the conventional classrooms and

laboratory environment and think on their own, rather than borrowing and sharing ‘within the box’ ideas. Effective use of course projects enables the student to not only learn technical skills but also social and interpersonal skills. The institute firmly believes in the principle of ‘Learning by doing’ and has provided opportunities for summer internships as well as semester internships. How do you provide industry interface to make students better skilled and more technically sound?

The institute has started professional development courses in collaboration with Industry experts. Professional experts from industry give training in these courses to develop competence expected in the industry from an engineering graduate. Besides, college regularly arranges industry visits, guest lectures from industry experts and from successful alumni entrepreneurs. An Industry Advisory board of more than 15 industrialists is formed in each of the nine departments who suggest amendments in the academic content for industry ready engineers. What steps has your institute taken towards retaining students for higher education in India, to match global education standards?

The students of the institute admitted to Masters and PhD courses in the institutes of National and International repute, such as IITs and IIMs. To that effect, the institute not only has designed its curriculum, but also provides ample co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Sessions by professionals regarding preparation for technical and competitive examinations are also arranged. n

We provide an internship to give students an opportunity to consolidate and ehance what they’ve learned in class by working in a professional setting under a supervisor, a practitioner in the field. Students need to work three hours a week. A five-credit internship would require that students work 15 hours per week for 10 weeks in a quarter of total internship period. Do you also have any refresher courses for your faculty to stay updated about latest trends, technology, and upcoming requirements of the education world?

IIE itself does not provide any faculty development programme. It is a governing body that governs the set of rule and regulation to its study centres across the world. We provide them with best quality material, training modules, and other parameters focused to nurture them on basis of communication skills (verbal and written), commercial awareness, attitude towards work, lifelong learning, self-management, team solving, problem solving, initiative, self–motivation, adaptability, stress management. Faculty’s role needs to change and it needs to be flipped around in a way that the teacher facilitates the overall learning of students rather than distributing notes. n

What is its scope as far as career prospect is concerned?

No branch is distinct. All branches have equal value. We work hard for students of all the branches to make them employable. Career prospect depends upon the individual capability of the student. The branch or the area of study may restrict a particular scope of work, but we believe that any student if is employable, then market conditions won’t hamper his/her career. How do you provide industry interface to make students skilled and technically sound?

We conduct training sessions for our students before they appear for employability test. Personality development programmes are being conducted time to time. Students attend the workshop with latest technologies such as R language, business analytics, big data analytics and Intelligence using TABLEAU, Cyber Security etc. We explore all available opportunities for our students. We also invite corporate doyens to train students on the current market situation. We conduct industrial visits to enhance students’ practical learning. Our students visited various manufacturing plants like Yamaha motors, Yakult, Pepsico Food & Agro Ltd etc.

What are the steps taken by your institute to curb the Brain-Drain?

Globalisation has opened the doors for students to be a part of MNCs and foreign corporations. To acquaint students with the intricacies of operations in foreign lands, we have been taking our students on global business pilgrimage. In the past, our student along with senior faculty members have visited the following premier universities and had intensive experience of global management education: l Nanyang Technological University, Singapore l University of Auckland, New Zealand l Management Development Institute of Singapore l National University of Singapore We expose our students to global universities to have a hands-on experience of what life is like in corporate of these countries. Students also get a glimpse of what cultural barriers stand in their way and get an insight as how to overcome them. Students on such trips are also awarded certificates for a three day workshop which further strengthens their profiles. Do you also have any refresher course for your faculty to keep them updated with latest trends, technology and needs of the education world?

We enhance and update our faculty’s knowledge time to time through Faculty Development Programmes (FDP). The programme helps in: l Managing multiple roles and new responsibilities such as problem-based tutorials, case-based discussions, become mentors, and develop and evaluate new curriculum l Integrating latest global technology into teaching-learning process l Research and master latest technology based teaching skills l Leadership and management proficiency. n

Learning by Doing With its professional courses, the university is promoting the “Learning by Doing” among its students, says Dr Vijay Gupta, Vice Chancellor, Sharda University, in an interview with Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN).

W

hat is the vision of Sharda University?

Do most of the Indian B Tech students readily opt for the first job-opportunity during placements? What is your view about it?

It is a university setup by state legislature and the vision is to provide avenues for useful education to students. By useful here we mean something that make them capable, employable and learned so that they can make their place in society.

Is there any distinct branch of engineering that your institute offers and do share its scope as far as career prospect is concerned?

We are a professional university. All the courses in engineering/technology domain, design, journalism, medicine etc are the ones which make people employable. We do offer science programmes which are designed for specific kind of jobs. While starting a programme, we look at what are our educational goals, professional objective of the course, and what are we preparing students for? Unlike other universities, professional goal of our courses is clearly defined. For instance, we have started a programme in visual arts with a motive to nurture professionals with artistic abilities. It will help them to show creativity in their jobs. How much job-oriented your courses are, especially in the light of latest trends and technologies taking place around the world and

prime focus of students’ interest. It is also attracting all practitioner engineers. There are no purely mechanical instruments any more. ICT is embedded in mechanical instruments. For example 50 per cent of automobile is of electronics and ICT than of metal used. For the past 30 years electronics has provided acceleration to every industry. ICT also helped the industries in reducing the product planning and manufacturing cost. Electronics and ICT permitted us to reduce metal being consumed, reduced the time and that’s why the cost of production has come down.

DR VIJAY GUPTA Vice Chancellor, Sharda University the education industry creating global products in terms of fresh pass outs?

Programmes at our University like Automobile Engineering, where we have tried to develop actual automobile workshop. In workshop, students work on engines, fabricate cars and test ride the cars. These are the kind of things our students showcase with the help of professional courses. At Sharda University, we believe in application oriented programmes. For example, second year students of our Computer Science and Engineering branch work on developing mobile applications. So it is largely “Learning by Doing”. Do you think traditional engineering discipline is being eclipsed by the emerging ones?

It is happening largely in Computer Science and Engineering field. In last 40 years, the penetration of Information Communication Technology (ICT) is a

In our country, we have a very stagnant industry. There is a good number of jobs in the area of ICT rather than other branches of engineering. So, if the students are accepting the first job offers irrespective of the fact that whether the job is of their field or not, they are not doing anything wrong as they can see few people are getting jobs. The students are impatient because they are not getting the jobs of their choice but they can’t sit idle and they have to do something. What are the latest and upcoming products in the pipeline as far as your University/ Institute is concerned? Can you share some of the prominent ones with us?

We are in the process of complete revision of the syllabus. With the approach of “Learning by Doing”, we are going to enhance multiple folds. We are having meetings for developing new ideas of how to make our programmes more practice oriented. We started scheme of six months of industry internship, we permit students to take Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). We give our students time to work on their individual products; we have found out that the students learn more while doing a job rather than studying in campus. n

HIGHER EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

Redefining Academic Excellence

T

he Manipal Education Group, with its heritage of excellence in higher education of 63 years, launched Manipal University, Jaipur (MUJ) in 2011 on an invitation from the Government of Rajasthan. It is a self-financed State University and is redefining academic excellence in the region. University provides excellent ambience to enhance the teaching-learning experience and to promote creativity and innovation. MUJ, being a multi-disciplinary university, offers programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level across various streams. The streams include Engineering, Architecture, Planning, Fashion and Jewellery Design, Fine Arts, Hospitality, Humanities, Journalism and Mass Communication, Basic Sciences, Law, Commerce, Computer Applications, and Management. Over 6,500 students from diverse backgrounds have already been enrolled across all programmes. A well-qualified team of faculty members with more than 50 per cent having PhD is the asset of the university. First in India

The university’s campus is the first in India rated with LEED India Platinum and GRIHA – Five Star. It also is a zero discharge campus through rain water harvesting, waste water recycling and reuse, and ground water recharging. Water and Electricity consumption on the campus is monitored through smart metering to minimise the losses and arrive at optimum consumption levels. The University has been conferred with Digital

DR SANDEEP SANCHETI President, Manipal University, Jaipur India - Smart Campus Award by NDTVCISCO. As the first digital campus of the country, MUJ provides academic information and support to its students through an Academic Management System (AMS). The campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled with 10 Gbps optical fibre backbone and has 100 per cent surveillance through 600 CCTV cameras. MUJ - The New-Age University

Manipal University, Jaipur, being a newage university, has not only adopted the best practices from reputed institutions, but also initiated some innovative ones, to be ahead of the competition and provide excellence in higher education. The university tries to leverage technology in a big way. Laptops are provided to all faculties and students so that learning may continue outside the class room also. The students and faculties are encouraged to take online courses like MOOCs to enhance domain knowledge. Education at MUJ is fully geared up in terms of its preparedness to impart the right type of skills and knowledge. The university has introduced many innovative concepts in the pedagogical process. These include open book tests, moderation of question papers, showing examination/test answer books to students and moderation of final grades.

These all bring in transparency in the evaluation process. In addition, many interdisciplinary/open elective courses are available to students wherein they can opt for credits from specialisations other than their own. Introduction of a compulsory course on “Value Education” and “Ethics” for all first year students is again an innovative step in higher education. The university has set up an entrepreneurship cell wherein students and faculty members learn about innovation, incubation, technology transfer, patenting and IPR. MUJ has already incubated five technology companies through “Technology Business Incubation Centre”. The effectiveness of the academiaindustry relationship underlines the use of the latest tools and techniques to make the pedagogy effective. Emphasis is made on industry component of the academic curriculum. The University offers basic and advanced training programmes to its students. It exposes them to research related in contemporary and futuristic technologies by continuous improvement and innovation. Under “Practice School Concept”, final year students have to work for their projects in the industry to get hands-on experience. It helps them in getting good placements by converting their project work/internship into jobs. The university facilitates students for short duration stints abroad under more than two dozen MOUs signed with reputed global academic institutes to expose them to the culture and work ethos and prepare them for global leadership. Choice-Based Credit System

The university has adopted choice based credit system where students can decide their pace of learning. Students firstly have to register for courses according to their interests and capabilities. The university reviews the curriculum constantly and revision is done to reflect the latest international trends. Curriculum is designed to include skill development courses for gainful employability. n

HIGHER EDUCATION PERSPECTIVE

Sinhgad Engineering Institutes: Nurturing Skilled Technocrats New measures in education help the students at Sinhgad Engineering Institutes to rehash their skills according to latest industry trends, says Rachana NavaleAshtekar, Vice President (Admin), Sinhgad Technical Education Society, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

W

hat are the new ways of teaching incorporated in your institute?

The Audio-Visual content under “K-Point Programme” help students to ease the learning process and refresh the same during the exam as per the curriculum. Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test (AMCAT) is conducted twice a year to know strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of each student. In order to develop quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning, training as well as online tests are conducted every semester. Along with students, development of faculty members is also essential. Teacher Advancement Programme (TAP), Train the Trainer (TTT) Programme and faculty development programmes at Singhad Institutes are conducted to bring uniformity in the teaching process. What measures does your institute take to keep students updated about upcoming technology?

At Sinhgad Institutes, measures are taken to make students aware about the latest technologies. Few of them are: MEASURES IN ASSOCIATION

ing platform founded by Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to nurture students’ interests and to acquire relevant technical skills. IIT Bombay (IITB) Spoken Tutorials: The IITB Tutorials Project is about teaching and learning open source software. Microsoft Certification: A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed with Advanced Training Institutes (ATS), New Delhi to conduct Microsoft certification program (.net) for enhancing competency skill among students. Thermax Graduate Programme: The programme provides theory and practical skills in specific areas of Mechanical Engineering to the graduate trainees selected by Thermax Limited. Intel Intelligent Lab: This laboratory facility enables students for technological inventions that are compatible with Intel’s architecture-based devices in the Internet of Things (IoT). VIDIA CUDA Teaching Centre: The centre facilitates institute’s students to attend webinars on CUDA related programming from experts in various fields. HP Summer Training Programme: HP Ltd conducts summer training programme for undergraduates

in the areas of programming techniques, network management and security, embedded and robotics. IN-HOUSE MEASURES

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU): The institute has signed MoU with local companies, MNCs and foreign universities to allow our students to attend internships/short term courses. Industry Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC): IIIC in each department conducts expert lectures on latest technology, offers industrial visits, internships (of four week duration) to students. How do you view innovative pedagogy in the field of technical education?

Innovative Pedagogy in technical education is all about exploring and thus developing the tools that can be used by the teacher to transmit knowledge and skills to students effectively. In the Indian context, where student diversity is very dynamic, it is important to meet the needs of all the students. Do most of the Indian B Tech students readily opt for the first jobopportunity during placements?

In most of the renowned, well established institutions, around 70 per cent of students readily opt for the first job opportunity. Out of this, 50 per cent of the students find recruitment and the remaining 20 per cent, who are not job ready, apply for certain finish school courses to make themselves job ready. Do you think traditional engineering discipline is being eclipsed by the emerging ones?

Students today are faced with a time that has made it necessary for a non-traditional set of capabilities to aid the evolution of their careers. n
