EDITORIAL Recognising the Game Changers of Education

Indian education system has witnessed numerous transformations over the past few years. The country has embraced innovative teaching-learning practices, adapted to advanced technologies and the concept of international collaborations, with open arms. All this has resulted in India emerging as the biggest pool of talent and competitive global citizens, across the world. The New Education Policy, which is likely to be introduced soon, will be a step forward towards making India a global education hub. All this would not have been possible without the efforts of country’s educationists and educators, who with their policies and path breaking initiatives have reshaped the way education is being perceived and imparted in the country. In line with this, our cover story “Game Changers in Education” is a sincere effort to put the spotlight on all the dynamic game changers in the field of education – be it education ministers, bureaucrats, vice chancellors, school principals and education philanthropists. The story talks about their journey of accomplishments and contributions in renovating the education ecosystem. On the other hand, our special story – “Impact of Technology in Educating Gen Z: Global Perspective” is a take on the role of technology as an enabler in educating the next generation. It features the views of top school and higher education leaders on adopting the latest technology for holistic development of Gen Z. Apart from this, our special feature carries the rich legacy of World Education Summit – the biggest summit on innovation in education. Last few years have witnessed sea changes in the Indian education sector as it has been reshaped by the introduction of innovative teaching-learning practices, effective use of technology, collaboration with foreign universities for global standard of education and many others. Prakash Javadekar Prakash Keshav Javadekar (born 30 January 1951) is an Indian politician. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and currently serving as the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Following the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014 Indian General Election, he was appointed Minister State (Independent Charge) for Environment, Forests and Climate Change. He was also the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and briefly held the portfolio of Information and Broadcasting. He was made the HRD Minister in 2016. For a while, he was also the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting. As the Education Minister, he ensured the establishment of the National Testing Agency as a premier and self-sustained testing organisation to conduct entrance examinations for admission/fellowship in higher educational institutions. He was also the Chief Guest at 2nd Annual Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave. The summit was held to promote an environment of innovations, employability and entrepreneurship across the country. During his address, Javadekar said, “There is a new vibrancy in the education landscape of Rajasthan. A number of path-breaking measures have been implemented across the length and breadth of the State – a number of which are IT-led innovations that have transformed the whole educational content delivery across Rajasthan State’s schools.”

Dhan Singh Rawat Dhan Singh Rawat (Born on October 7, 1972) is a Member of Legislative assembly of Uttarakhand. He represents the Constituency of Srinagar Garhwal, and is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He completed basic education from his village School, and higher education from Hemvanti Nandan Bahuguna (HNBGU) and holds a PHD degree. During various events organisesd by Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd, his gracious presence as a chief guest and valuable thoughts have made the audience know about latest policies and Government’s key focus areas in future. Guest in 12th World Education Summit Delhi, he inaugurated it and shared his thought provoking ideas on various aspects important for holistic development of the nation and necessary to impart quality higher education in the country. His efforts in Uttarakhand have helped the State to improve the higher education and bring it at par to the global standard. Sharing the efforts of the Uttarakhand Government for betterment of the education sector, Dr Rawat during the 12th World Education Summit Delhi said, “Due to shortage of funds in education that too mostly in the higher education, institutes are facing faculty shortage and lacking quality education. The Uttarakhand Government has recruited teachers through state public service commission which resulted into improved attendance of students in the institutions of the State. The attendance increased to 68% from 47 % within a short span of time.”

Temjen Imna Along Temjen Imna Along, Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Government of Nagaland, is also the president of Bhartiya Janta Party’s Nagaland unit. He strongly asserted that his involvement in politics is simply to be able to influence the policies that would reign in ‘Sustainable and Equal opportunity for all round development, so as to ensure a healthier future for the next generation’. Temjen Imna Along is a nonassuming, soft-spoken and a philosophical person whose aim is to serve the people with a sense of social responsibility. During his address at 10th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Chandigarh in March 2019 as a Guest of Honour, he emphasised that quality of higher education plays an important role in the development of youth and country holistically. He said, “I’m glad that we have come to realise the importance of higher education and technical education in our country. There is a huge gap between industry and academia. I belong to North East part of the country which is a cluster of eight small states. In Nagaland, the minimum qualification to teach is a Doctorate degree and in our department there is a dominance of women. So, it can be said that in Nagaland, women are more educationally empowered than men.”

Thokchom Radheshyam Thokchom Radheshyam, Minister for Education, Labour and Employment, Government of Manipur, has been elected as a Memeber of Legislative Assembly from Heirok (Vidhan Sabha constituency) of Manipur in 2017. He has participated in various events of Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd including 2nd Annual Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Jaipur where he motivated the attendees to bring sustainable change in education sector. While sharing his thoughts at our events, Radheshyam always emphasised on the importance of maintaining standard of education not only in Manipur but also across the country. Sharing his thoughts during the Summit, Radheshyam said, “Education is in an ever-evolving paradigm. Addressing challenges on a routine basis, finding their solutions and implementing innovative ideas to improve the educational landscape of Manipur, remain my key priority. Manipur is a small State with a great diversity and I am here in this conclave to follow the very slogan of this event -- connect, engage and participate.”

Anil Swarup Anil Swarup started his career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in, 1981. His assignments in various Ministries of the Government reflected his indepth knowledge and experience in visualising, conceptualising, articulating and implementing various schemes. Swarup holds a Masters degree in Political Science from Allahabad University, where he was awarded the Chancellor’s Gold medal for the best all-round student. At the very beginning of his administrative career he was awarded the Best officer Award at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration amongst the officers of 1981 batch. As a strategic thinker and an innovative leader he has won several awards and nomination, the prominent ones being: Nominated as one of the “policy change agent” by The Economics Times during the years 2010, 2012, 2015 & 2016. He was selected as one of the 35 “Action Heroes” in India Today’s 35th Annual Edition. Swarup attended various educational events organised by Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd where he shared about the various

Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe Prof Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe joined All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) as Chairman on 17th July 2015. Prof Sahasrabudhe graduated from BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, in Mechanical Engineering with first rank and Gold medal in 1980. He obtained Master's and Doctoral (with UGC Fellowship) degrees from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in 1982 and 1989 respectively. In his illustrious career of 31 years, Prof Sahasrabudhe held several important Academic, Research and Administrative positions. He started his career as Scientific Officer, at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1983 and moved to Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) as Engineer in the same year. He served as Lecturer and Assistant Professor at North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) from 1987-1988 & again from 19891995, before joining IIT Guwahati as Associate Professor in 1995 and has been serving as Professor since 1999. Also, he served as Director, College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) since 2006 on deputation from IIT, Guwahati prior to joining as AICTE Chairman.

Dr Subodh Agarwal Dr Subodh Agarwal, a 1988 batch IAS officer of ACS rank, has been formulating public policy in the Central and State governments, managing public sector organisations and leading administrative districts for the past three decades. Known for his strong and effective interpersonal and communication skills, the senior IAS officer is noted for building effective teams and providing hands-on leadership. He has always been the first choice for demanding assignments or managing organisations in crisis with specific mission. He is a highly focused, motivated, analytical and organised with an eye for details. Dr Agarwal is a graduate from IIT-Delhi. He earned Post Graduate Diploma in Systems & Management from IIT Delhi in 1988. Dr Agarwal also holds a Master’s degree in Public

Policy from Princeton University and a PhD in economics from Rajasthan University. Dr Agarwal has always graced the various summits organised by Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd. His deliberations during the summits always helped the participants to know about the policies and initiatives that may help them to improve outcomes. As one of the key speakers at Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Jaipur in September last year, he said, “The Government of Rajasthan is taking various initiatives for the benefit of students in the State. Nowadays, the Government is focusing more on equipping students with vocational and entrepreneurial skills. These skills will make our students job-ready for the corporate sector and the industries of their respective streams.

Anju Sharma Anju Sharma is a member of the prestigious Indian Administrative Service and has been serving in the Government at senior leadership positions for more than 26 years. She currently holds the office of Higher Education and Technical (H&TE), Government of Gujarat, as Principal Secretary. She is also the Director General of Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management (GIDM). During her administrative career she worked as collector & DDO in various districts of Gujarat and has worked in various departments like Food, Revenue, Environment and Forests departments in the State Government. She has also worked as Director in Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. She has received several awards, viz., the ‘Prime Minister's Award for Administrative Excellence for implementing the Sickle Cell Anemia Control Program in the State (2011)’, ‘Individual Contribution Award for Health Insurance Scheme - Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna (RSBY) (2011)’, ‘NASSCOM Social Innovation Leaders Award’, ‘National E Governance Award’, ‘E World Award for the project e-Mamta-MCTS (2012)’, and ‘India Tech Award for the project e-Mamta-MCTS (2012)’. She has also written a book – ‘I of the Storm - Discover your true self’. Ms Sharma has also received range of national and international trainings and has pioneered pathbreaking projects like e-Mamta for Mother and Child Tracking, "Khilkhilat" vans for drop back of new born infants with mothers from maternity homes, 181 "Abhayam” helpline for women, School Safety Week for disaster management education, Student Start up and Innovation Policy and so on.

Navin Mittal Navin Mittal is currently serving as the Commissioner of Collegiate and Technical Education for Government of Telangana. He belongs to the 1996 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and allotted to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He is an engineering graduate (B Tech) in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He stood 3rd in All India Civil Services exams in 1995. In 2009, the Rotary Club of Hyderabad East honoured Navin Mittal, with Vocational Excellence Awards. He is always of the view of adopting latest innovations and technologies for the improvement of any sector. The same was reflected during his address at the 10th Higher Education and HR Conclave 2019, Chandigarh, where he was one of the key speakers and inaugurated the same along with other key dignitaries. Elaborating his thoughts on the fourth Industrial Revolution, Mittal said, “There are three significant trends which we are seeing all over the world. The first one is industry 4.0, which is a big shift from industry 3.0. It was about basic use of Information & Technology, basic development of Information & Technology in last five to six decades. India was somehow not a leader in the previous three Industrial revolutions.

Game Changers in Preschool Education Dr S K Rathor and Kavita Rathor Dr S K Rathor and Kavita Rathor stepped into the preschool arena way back in 1999 and together they launched their preschool brand Sanfort a decade later in the year 2009. olleges are focusing a lot on enhancing academic skills of students. However, students lack in the most important skills i.e. life skills. We are working with campuses across the country to built programmes that help in nurturing life skills among students,” says Dr Dhaval Mody, Director, RoundGlass College Wellbeing. “Nowadays, colleges are talking about three things: Admissions, Placements, and Retention of students. When Colleges talk about admissions, they emphasise on how their curriculum is different and the infrastructure they are providing to the students,” he added. Dr Mody suggested that the institutes are needed to focus on things that may help students to be successful in life. He stated, “Placements has been a big thing when it comes to higher education institutes. The colleges are striving hard to get their students placed in the reputed organisations. But the industry requirements are very different and colleges are required to bridge that gap. We have collaborated with various colleges in all the aforesaid domains working for the mental health and well being of the students.” He also described about the programme offered by his organisation. According to him, “Our programme has two modules: one is on campus and the other one is online. In today’s scenario, we are into so many things that we forget to be happy. Nowadays, students don’t feel happy despite having various facilities whereas earlier students

INNOVATIONS PAVING WAY FOR QUALITY HIGHER EDUCATION IN RAJASTHAN Our priority is to make youth employable and to make the college campuses conducive for the holistic development of the students. Keeping this in focus many entrepreneurship and skill development programs are now being started and some of them are underway in colleges, says Bhanwar Singh Bhati, Minister for Higher Education, Government of Rajasthan, in conversation with Kartik Sharma of Elets News Network (ENN). What has been your top most priority as Minister of Higher Education? Our priority is the holistic development of the students. We want the State Higher Education to reach the level where it can match the Global standards. We want our students to grow in an environment where they can become job oriented and are capable of getting jobs globally. The Government is endeavouring in this direction through its scheme and programmes for students so that they can get career and job oriented opportunities as employment is the major challenge for the youth. We do not want to create just graduates or postgraduates; in fact, we want skillful graduates and postgraduates who can sustain in the fastchanging global world and economy.

What policies and new initiatives have been undertaken by the Government in the last 6-7 months? Our priority is to make youth employable, and to make the environment conducive for the holistic development of the students. Keeping this in focus, many entrepreneurship and skill development programmes are now being started and some of them are in progress in colleges. We aim to make students employable along with learning which can help them in the creative utilisation of their time and money. Our summer camp programme “Kaushal Unnayan” has met with great success which was organised in 163 government colleges of the State in June.

What specific has been done for the betterment of the education ecosystem? Our Government is dedicated towards improving the quality of higher education, its development and creating a healthy educational environment in the State. In a departure from the protocol, we have decided to decentralise the entire process of brainstorming for development plans and creating them. For this, CM Ashok Gehlot had announced the Resource Assistance and College with Excellence (RACE) for all the colleges. Under this, one college from each district has been nominated as ‘nodal’ and a total of 33 district resource aid committees have been formulated. Through this initiative, we are promoting the process of resource redistribution in the state education system and kick-starting a new chapter of development of the colleges. Besides, for the first time, we are going to conduct the annual auditing of all the

government colleges under Annual Auditing Programme, which was again announced in the budget speech by the Chief Minister. This initiative would be a great tool in monitoring the performance and development of the colleges.

Technology is taking over education in a grand manner. What are the technological initiatives in pipeline that can empower the weaker section? We are going to start an online 24*7 Quick Response System (QRS) scheme to answer the queries of the students on a real-time basis. It is specifically been created for the students who belong to the weaker section of the society and cannot afford to attend expensive coaching classes. Besides, an application has been created for the Universities through which helpline facility for students, monitoring the academic & extracurricular activities of universities, the transmission of orders, and overseeing the work of district resource committees. We are heavily focusing on imparting employment-related training to students while they are still studying. For this, we have collaborated with Rajasthan Skill and Livelihood Development Corporation (RSLDC). Under this, we will be rendering 34 regular courses for skill development in selected government colleges. 25 Language Labs are being planned to be established in the selected government colleges to help students in grasping the requisite language skills for acquiring jobs in the future.

We have initiated the process of making college campuses secure, safe and free for the girl students. Girls mentoring cells and internal complaint committee have been set up so that our daughters feel safe and secure when they are away from home. Many programs are organised by our colleges to train girls in self defence. To promote education in the State, Government has opened 45 new colleges and now we can boast that not a single subdivision in the state is without a college. This shows our determination towards making education accessible to all. To encourage physically challenged students, our Chief Minister has announced higher education scholarship which is a valuable contribution and help to the students.

You have to have a big vision and take very small steps to realize that vision. These little steps and innovations that the government has taken in last few months will help in creating something large and better.

Moreover, the Government is also emphasising on improving the quality of higher education institutes in the State, says Vaibhav Galriya, Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, Government of Rajasthan, in conversation with Kartik Sharma of Elets News Network (ENN).

What are the unique schemes recently launched by the Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Rajasthan to improve higher education sector of the State? Quality education is our aim and underlining this objective, we need few changes in our educational structure. We believe in responding to collegesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; preferences and requirements. We have come up with decentralisation measures with our scheme of RACE. The scheme is for the colleges and by the colleges. It involves redistribution of resources at local level and it will surely help in improving the condition if colleges that lack resources. Another innovation has been Annual Auditing Programme which is soon to be launched in colleges. The scheme will bring the institutions at par with the standard of other higher education institutes in the country which indirectly helps in improving the higher education sector in Rajasthan. Pratiyogita Dakshta Programme has been launched in all the Government Colleges of the State to enhance competitive attitude and to increase their chances of getting employment.

The department is also opting for skill education initiatives along with regular studies to make students after their graduation and postgraduation degree.

Please provide a brief description about the administrative initiatives taken for smooth functioning of the department. The review meetings with the concerned officials of the respective department on regular basis are among the major initiatives that helped in smooth functioning of the department. We have also installed Biometric attendance system for principals and professors. What message would you like to give to students? Education is the secret for the success of any human being and the roots of good learning lie on healthy competition. Keeping his in mind, the department conducted a State-level General Knowledge competition for the students of all the government colleges. It also helped the students to evaluate their calibre. Such competitions are necessary for developing skills and effective knowledge. Moreover, Education breeds confidence and to sustain in this competitive world, it is necessary to develop confidence among our students to prepare them for the future challenges.

RAJASTHAN REFORMING EDUCATION SECTOR THROUGH INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMES Rajasthan Government, in line with its vision of bringing the education sector at par to the global standards, is adopting latest innovations and practices across the State’s educational ecosystem. Pradeep Kumar Borad, Commissioner, College Education and Special Secretary, Higher Education, Government of Rajasthan, throws light on such initiatives in an interview with Kartik Sharma of Elets News Network (ENN). What is your approach to initiate new plans in higher education sector of Rajasthan? I wish to initiate innovations and reforms with the resources available in the system without any complain about lacking of resources. I am fortunate that I am dealing with three components of education that are College, School, Sanskrit education, therefore I always try to link innovations and reform with the students and youth studying in schools and colleges. That is the reason why I initiated Bal Sabha programme in school education which I conceived almost one and a half decade ago. This idea has now flourished across state with full support of government departments and public. This program is aiming to assure holistic development of child involving community, especially parents to watch over the performance of Institutions and receiving by their wards. Similarly in college education, I am focusing on multifold task to create vibrations among higher education Institution such as: • Fixing on students welfare centric programs • Promoting environment for quality education • Involving community through alumni meet • Increasing faculty members to contribute their best for the excellence of Institution • Focusing on better infrastructure and faculty in colleges

What are your plans for the department? We have targeted to ensure maximum attendance of students in colleges and to ensure the best of facilities for students so that a positive environment towards education gets created in the state and these government colleges get more recognition in the state. Secondly, we want to make our students excel in sports. To ensure the development of sports skills in our students the department has introduced program ‘Arjun Drishti’ and to regularise the sports activities in colleges we have launched an annual sports calendar for all the government colleges in state. It is very important in terms of overall development of students. We aim to create lively environment in the colleges so that students and their parents like to visit the colleges.

What are your plans to provide employment opportunities to the students? We want to provide maximum job opportunities to the students. As I mentioned earlier, the Pratiyogita Dakshta program is up and running very successfully, we are gradually trying to expand this program so that we may add the state’s youth other then these students also in this program of giving free coaching for competitive exams. Arjun Drishti, as I said earlier is one crucial program for creating an environment for sports in the colleges. One new innovative program which we are planning is ‘Idea Bank’. In this program we are seeking ideas from the faculty and other stakeholders of higher education domain. We will evaluate the best of the ideas and will implement them in the higher education ecosystem of the state. The department is reaching to colleges to collect maximum ideas. We are engaging the current and retired teachers of universities and colleges to voluntarily teaching our students. This way we will be able to take help of the vast experience and pool of knowledge that these teachers possess.

What are your future targets to improve higher education in the state? We are focusing on quality education to all. The department is providing required infrastructure and other facilities to students to make campuses cordial for their development. o you remember a 2014 advertisement where a newborn baby cuts his umbilical cord on his own, seconds after coming out of his mother’s womb, simply by learning it from the Internet? No matter how exaggerated it came across then, in present times we are metaphorically moving towards that era where children see technology right after they open their eyes in the world. The impact of technology has become so huge and intermediating that our present generation is living and breathing it.

Dubbed as Gen Z, the next generation of students thinks, behave and learn differently, because they have been born and raised in the technology-immersed environment. It will not be inappropriate to say that members of Generation Z are predominantly digital natives.

On the whole, technology should be intertwined in such a manner that it becomes an enabler in educating Gen Z. Chithung Mary Thomas, Secretary, Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, said, “Born in the ecology of technology Gen Zers are technology-fluent digital natives. They are a highly informed lot who are likely to be highly independent and competitive. Learning is fully self-directed and autonomous to highlight their best talents. Investments, therefore, ought to be in technology so that experiences are seamless and integrated. Method of learning should move from structured auditory method to visual hands-on method. Connected classrooms with multiple digital platforms will be the norm to acquire problem-solving skills and peer-to-peer learning”. Interestingly, Gen Z learners don’t see technology as a tool; they see it as a regular part of life. And this phenomenon can be leveraged by the educators to cater to the ever-changing educational needs of students. Speaking on the topic, Ryan Pinto, CEO, Ryan International Group of Institution, underlined the ever-growing role of technology and shared how Ryan Group is recognising technology as a regular part of Gen Z’s lives - as well as the world they live in. “Smartboards and video in classroom are widespread. However, we must not overlook the fact that there are certain disadvantages of overuse of technology. Generation Z finds it more challenging to pay attention for long periods due to constant technology use. Thus, the role of educators becomes crucial in terms of dealing with the issue while also preparing students to use technology in the real world. Sharing her view on this, Sneha Rathor, CEO Academics & Innovations, Sanfort Group of Schools, said, “Don’t take away or restrict technology from generation Z but enable them with the right kind of technology as it is a crucial part of their life. AICTE’s role is how to promote entrepreneurship while students are graduating, not after completing their course. We have instructed institutes to encourage their students for the courses that will empower them to be entrepreneurs. And also create incubators, accelerators and support system in terms of entrepreneurship cell, innovation cell where students will start working right from their first year. So by the time they will graduate, instead of seeking jobs, they will be able to create jobs for others.

Because engineering education is one where you methodically study physics, chemistry and math on one side, lot of hands on wherein you learn many things – experiments, critical thinking, analytical ability, mathematical ability which will help in any domain you go outside later. Secondly, India due to its demographic dividend, the entire world which is aging, there are enough opportunities for jobs not only in India but the rest of the world. CBSE: COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION The main objective of the Central Board of Education (CBSE) is to serve the educational institutions effectively and to be responsive to the educational needs of those students, says Dr Biswajit Saha, Director (Training & Skill Education), CBSE, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

In line with Government’s vision of skilling the Indian youth, what initiatives have been undertaken by the CBSE? The CBSE has tried to include various skill-oriented subjects in its curriculum both at secondary and senior secondary level. In class ninth and tenth, we are offering 17 skill-oriented courses catering to the requirements of all sectors. Similarly at Senior Secondary level, CBSE is offering 43 courses ranging from Artificial Intelligence to early childhood education, yoga, retail, tourism, media etc. We have tried to cover all the areas such as engineering, healthcare, banking and finance along with others through these courses. Out of 21,000 schools affiliated to CBSE, 8,000 schools are imparting skill-oriented education and training with enrollment of around seven lakh students so far. It is also important that higher education sector must encourage the skill training among its students as there are still visible gaps between Industry and Academia despite the efforts of Union and State Government. Government is also aiming to develop the schools as Skill Development Centres as their excellent infrastructure is underutilised after two pm. It will boost the skill training, community service and social empowerment. Such training will also support in nurturing globally competitive citizens who will be ready to work in any country of the world. Ultimately the quality education and effective skill training help in India’s economic development.

With New Education Policy (NEP) likely to release in few months, how is CBSE improving its guidelines to be in line with the needs of two most important stakeholders i.e. teachers and students? The New Education Policy is still at draft stage. There are so many components in it that are really encouraging but at the same time we are also raising our concerns about school education. As far as promoting skill education and vocational training in schools is concerned, the NEP is focusing on the same in a good way. To impart quality education in schools,

CBSE is emphasising on category-wise teachers’ training. With the help of good teachers, we are now trying to convert classrooms into learning spaces. In this regard, CBSE has so far established 16 Centres of Excellence across the country. With these centres, we are conducting various workshops and seminars on teachers’ training. Moreover, under the guidance of our Chairperson Anita Karwal, we have developed several manuals for principals, school management, officials and other staff. We are targeting for holistic development in schools and that’s why several initiatives have been taken by the CBSE in this regard. NCERT: PAVING WAY FOR ONE NATION - ONE SYLLABUS CONCEPT The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is the apex resource organisation to assist and advice the Central and State Governments in the formulation and implementation of their policies and programmes in the field of education, particularly school education and teachers’ training, says Major Harsh Kumar, Secretary, NCERT, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). NCERT has completed more than 50 Years of “Leading the Change” in Indian education, what are the major achievements of the educational body in the last five decades? If you ask about the achievements of NCERT, one can see that in the entire country, NCERT books are being read in order to maintain standards of education. Since education is on the concurrent list, it is not a compulsive thing. Today, 28 States follow NCERT curriculum subject to the changes as per their requirement. We are trying for “One Nation One Syllabus” concept though we have different boards with different policies but this is presently a guideline only by NCERT but not a compulsion. Besides, NCERT is conducting NAS (National Achievement Survey) after preparing a document on learning outcomes. The document describes about what a child should learn at a particular stage and what should be the outcome of that. On basis of that, we have been able to find out the gaps and it will be helpful in formulating the New Education Policy (NEP).

It starts with the basics. When you see the books you will find the difference how it is has been explained. We have got a channel on SWAYAM platform where the programme is run for the students. How does the New Education policy likely to help Assam in transforming the education sector?? The National Education Policy 2019 is built on the foundational pillars of “Access, Equity, Affordability and Accountability”. For Assam, a major reconfiguration of curricular and pedagogical structure is proposed in school education with Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) as an integral part it. With the proposed structure of 5+3+3+4 curricular and pedagogical structure based on cognitive and socio emotional developmental stages, the schools will be re-organised into school complexes. The Curriculum load of the learners will be also reduced. The burden of curriculum will also be reduced in terms of examination by transforming it into semester system. Students

There is a huge educational gap between rural and an urban area of India, what role does Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is playing to bridge it? To minimise the gap between the education scenario of rural and urban areas, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has organised zonal-level training programmes on teaching pedagogy, different competitions, and tournaments etc. Students and teachers irrespective of either they belong to rural or urban areas are allowed to join it. The selection of teachers has been done with utmost care so that they are selected in equal proportion from urban as well as rural areas. The objective is to develop the homogeneous academic atmosphere across the State. The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council feels proud to announce that the Higher Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges from rural areas also exhibited excellence in final examination with 100% of passing rate.

from paying admission fee, examination fee of Class X and Class XII. Also the Government is providing free textbooks to the students of Class X and XII. This year budgeted amount seems to be meager than the previous years. It will depend upon utilisation of the last year’s budgeted amount by the State Government.

How do you think the technology is helping students in improving their learning outcomes and teachers in their knowledge delivery methodology? The 21st century is the era of technology. To make the teachinglearning process effective, integration of technology in and outside the classroom is inevitable. Though there is also a fear that the technology would eventually replace the teachers, but the more prevalent view now is that it is a tool which can be applied to enhance conventional teaching rather than replace it. BOSEM TAKING MODERN EDUCATION IN ITS STRIDE The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, is the apex school education regulatory body in the State. With 786 high and higher secondary schools (226 Government, 103 Government aided and 457 Private), BOSEM also takes care of conducting examination and conditions for granting recognition, says Dr Chithung Mary Thomas, Secretary, Board of Secondary Education, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

What are your expectations from the “National Education Policy” with regards to the meeting the educational requirements of North East, especially Manipur? The draft National Education Policy 2019 can be viewed as highly futuristic (and technology-driven) which merits justification considering the rapid technological advancements made in recent years. The challenge lie in assimilating the policy in view of the disparities and developmental gaps between the different regions across the country in terms of physical, technological, social and manpower infrastructure. The North Eastern States of India have lagged behind in all development indices. It is only recently that concerted development efforts have trickled in with the initiatives of the “Act East Policy”. In Manipur, the State Government has taken up such bold steps as amalgamation of non-performing schools which will pave the way for opening new schools categories of such as are in line with the NEP 2019. However, the opening of ‘Special Education Zones’ as cited in the policy contradicts the survival of single schools in remote villages of Manipur. Thrust areas for Manipur would have to be sports, performing arts, vocational skills and crafts, computer & IT.

How do you see the Union Budget 2019-20 as far as education sector is concerned? Do you think allocation of Rs 400 crore for building world class institutions will bring the required change? The overall direction of the budget 2019 seems

progressive for the education sector. Allocations reflect that it is driven by ground realities. The budgetary allocation of Rs 400 crore for building World class institutions is encouraging. World class institution however, is not solely dependent on finance but also on the understanding, inspiration, motivation and quality of all the stakeholders involved in education. I strongly feel that standards of schools at K-12 level should be emphasised. Unless done so, big universities may not be able to stand on the loose soils of a weak elementary & secondary level education.

Technological advancements in the recent past have been explosive and irreversible. The dismay is that NCF-2005 framed 15 years ago is being followed till date leading to a mismatch in knowledge and curriculum making both obsolete. What makes Board of Secondary Education (BOSEM) stand apart from the rest of the Boards of the country? Any exclusive initiatives have you undertaken that you want to highlight? Established in 1972, the BOSEM develops curriculum and publishes text books up to secondary level in line with NCF and NCERT specifications. The state is a mini-India in all its diversity. 13 tribal dialects have been introduced in the curriculum as first language. To enhance academic values of the rich and varied culture of the state Thang Ta (local martial art), Eshei Nongmai (Music), Manipur Jagoi (dance) and Fine Arts are also introduced. BOSEM has been one of the first boards in the North Eastern States to have introduced computerised codification of answer scripts in 2014, Bar code and OMR based evaluation since

How content are you with the BOSEM 2019 result of HSLC and SSLC? The result of HSLC 2019 has recorded the highest pass percentage since its inception in 1972. Examination reforms like conversion of all examination centres into Board centres, Bar coding in answer scripts, multi level coding, live monitoring of evaluation were successfully implemented. Government schools showed marked improvement both in terms of student enrolment and pass percentage which can be attributed to the “School Fagathansi Mission” initiated by the Govt. of Manipur. It aims at overall improvement of government schools in terms of physical and manpower insfrastructural gaps. Another initiative is ‘Lairik Tamhallasi Mission” (No child left behind). This is aimed to bring ‘out of school children’ within age group of 15-18 yrs back to the formal school system. With the co-ordinated efforts from the fraternity of Education and with the implementation of the NEP, 2019, I hope that the challenges will be overcome so that the objective of education is achieved.

Chitkara University’s project, a farm engineering start-up called MOKSH bagged the First position and a Gold medal among all 17 International projects. The winning USP of MOKSH was the global importance of an innovative idea that simplifies the life of a farmer’s post-harvest and helps them earn more from crop waste. MOKSH is headed by its Founder Dr. Nitin Saluja, an entrepreneur from the Chitkara Innovation Incubator, Chandigarh. The second winning project from Chitkara University was DAT, an incubated company which makes Braille Education for the blind easy across the globe. It was declared as the ‘Best International Project’ at the event. They won 10,000 UK pounds by Hayden Green Foundation, UK. E-Braille Slate is a project devised by DAT for making education for the blind painless and comfortable. What are your expectations from the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new education policy? How will it change the face of the education in India? The present education system is designed as one size fits all specially in primary and secondary schools. In this system students get limited chance to explore their interests in arts, music and sports as the curriculum is rigid. This system gives no freedom for students to choose their interests thus leaving the students to feel bored or uninteresting, which further leads to failure. We think that the students should enjoy learning, which can only happen only if, their interests are aligned with the curriculum, which further improves students self confidence. We believe this helps the student to develop an attitude towards learning, which further enhances the personality of the students and gives him/ her enough courage to tackle any circumstances in life and contribute for society. At undergraduate level, the main focus of the education policy is to make students tested on the theoretical skills and awarded degrees on the marks . We feel that this can easily be obtained by reading prescribed text books and reproducing the same in the form of an answer in semester exams, thus getting a good GPA and recognised as a good engineer/doctor. But, this mere knowledge is not helping the brilliant students in their performance in the industry. We believe that on the job training and hands-on working as a part of curriculum will give more practical approach of the concept to the student. For this to happen, we proposed to bring in Industry experts and professional professors from the renowned University all over the world to come together to redesign the syllabus. Another challenge for many schools in India is that they have to be registered as with state department of education and also at the central department ( specially in case of CBSE ) level creating too many departments to deal with and too

much documentation to support this leaving the less time and resources to schools to focus on education. With multiple education departments, there is too much confusion, for example state board says Local Language is compulsory in the list of subjects that are taught to the student, but CBSE says Hindi as compulsory subject to be taught. In such a scenario, I can only imagine a student position, whose parent frequently transfers from one state to another. Another Policy of Government which is quite confusing is that State boards try to cap the maximum fee that can be charged by the schools and the Central Government wants to impose the Right to education Act. We have tied up with Nature Nurture in developing a theme based curriculum, where our children are exposed to education content in various different forms (digital CSS, books, activities, classroom decoration, Theme assemblies, student conferences) and bringing them closer to real life usage of the education content. This year, we have started Hobby clubs like Astronomy club, Photography club, Cookery club, Art club etc and we are a making sure that student participate in at least one such club to explore his/her interests. What are your plans regarding the expansion of ‘Futuristic Edu Initiatives’? We are trying to develop a framework, to assess the students’ interests, their learning levels in different subjects and create a student learning profile, and our teachers will be using it to understand students’ progress. Using this student profiling we would like to introduce differentiated learning in the classrooms. We believe that, in future this would help us in customizing the lesson plan to individual student level thus helping the student to make learning easy and enjoyable. We would like to use this framework to develop a digital system to track student progress.

It needs to be reviewed as additional infrastructure, teachers, and FAR (Floor Area Ratio) will be required in the School Buildings. It will also levy additional financial burden on the private institutions resulting in at least 40% hike in tuition fees for the students in this regard.

he Education system is not static, it is quite dynamic. What works well today, may not work in near future. In context of education sector, the aforesaid is true as traditional chalk-and-talk method of teaching is now being replaced by digital ways of learning,” Dr A Ashok, Secretary & Commissioner, Board of Intermediate Education, Government of Telangana and Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Basar, Telangana. As a Co-Programme Chair at 9th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Hyderabad, Dr Ashok has deliberated on various topics, issues and opportunities related to higher education ecosystem of Telangana. He was also among the key dignitaries who inaugurated the conclave. Revealing about how the Government in Telangana is implementing various initiatives to improve the higher education in the State, he said, “Despite being the youngest State in the country, we are the pioneers in the education sector. We have set several landmarks in Indian education landscape. Telangana Government has taken various initiatives for different sectors with emphasis on education sector under the dynamic vision of our Hon’ble Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.” “We are heading towards ‘Golden Telangana’ to achieve a considerable development in the State with education as the key focus area. Since the inception of the State, huge investments have been made into education sector. Along with providing equal opportunities of growth for every domain of education sector including pre-primary, school, higher education, and skill and vocational training, the Government has also established several universities across the State,” he added. t’s 04:30a.m. Reejul, Mihir, Kripa, Sidhhi, Sai, Adhip, Asmita, Pooja, Rohitesh and some more students arrived at school in their uniform with school bag, tiffin and water bottle. When other children were in their deep sleep, these students started their class of the chapter ‘Animals and Birds’ from environmental science book. But, their class was not going to happen in their daily classroom. After some instruction and briefing they boarded the school vehicle which departed towards a swampy land at the outskirt of the town where they were going to see variety of Local and Migratory Birds, observe what they do, understand their habitat and know their names. Lot of questions and discussions started among them immediately after the vehicle started. Sai asked, “Sir, what is that bird?” This was one of the many such outdoor classes happens in every academic session at different times in Kiddy Kids. Students visit many different places, interact with variety of people; experience numerous new things beyond their text books and smart classes. Answering a question and asking a questing are not same. While answering a question may not need any brain exercise, but, asking a question definitely need some energy to create a spark in the neuropath of the brain. ‘Use it or Lose it’ is a very famous line used by the neurologists and psychologists across the world to explain

how real life observation and experience are extremely important to create a very effective and intelligent brain. Developing the Brain to its maximum possible level through experiential learning is what the school’s academic policy has adopted since its inception in 2009, says, Manas Ranjan Mohanty, the Principal of the school. He adds that the school had never believed in just syllabus completion, exam and class promotion without actual concept clarity in the mind of the students. Therefore, each and every class everyday starts with an experiential learning activity followed by discussion and sharing among students and most importantly developing question from self observation. Text Books and Copies are always second to hands-on activity which gives real life experiences to students of KKPS, helps them to improve their observation skill, analytical skill and creativity skill. Questioning every question, every concept, every theory and every definition ignites the mind to think more in deep and relate it to day-to-day life situations. QUANTUM JUMP TOWARDS EDUCATION REFORM MOVEMENT

his article presents a case study, conducted to investigate how integration of technology in K-12 education sector, in different school environments, and different student demography, can impact learnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s engagement and academic performance. Our findings clearly indicate that the suggestions made in the proposed National Education Policy (NEP) are easily doable, and, if implemented with right kind of tools and strategies, as used in this study, can have tremendous positive impact on several outcomes envisioned in the NEP. Initial findings in this study can open the door for implementation at a much wider scale in a shorter time span. Tools used in the study: 1) Digital content aligned with the National Curriculum (NCERT) for teaching-learning-assessment with dynamic graphics and animations that can be delivered on-line through/via any web enabled smart gadget including Tablets/PC/Ipads/(Smart Mobile phone); 2) Learning Management System (LMS) that provides tools needed to/for delivering and managing instruction, and 3) Structured instructional approach for regular teaching, and Adaptive practice testing before any summative assessment that empowers the teacher to engage students in class and at home; 4) Teacher training and professional development process designed in such a way that it becomes a part of their teaching and student evaluation. The delivery on content and use of LMS tools requires no downloads and no installations, because content is in HTML5 and LMS is programmed in Dot.net Implementation requirements: 1) Projection systems in class rooms, 2) preferably one computer lab with as many computers as class size in school, 3) at least 4-5 hours per week after-school internet access for students to complete their weekly home assignments.

Teacher training for two days face-to-face meetings, and then continuous training as they teach, requiring them to complete student assignments before these are assigned to students every week, all managed through digital controls through LMS tools. each subject to be completed in that sequence, enforced electronically by making tutorial as pre-requisite to homework and homework in turn as pre-requisite to quiz on the same assigned topics. The first term of the school started after the teacher training. During the first week of this term, teachers provided orientation to students through pre-recorded orientation videos, and conducting one period in the lab for students to complete their first online assignment in the presence of the class teacher. Thereafter, weekly lesson was followed as designed in the digital Master Lesson Plan. All weekly assignments became active after every Sunday mid-night, automatically, and expire just before mid-night the following Sunday. Weekly routine for teachers included two types of tasks, i) every day, and the other every week. Every day, teacher was expected, and most of them did so, to check and respond to messages in her internal e-mails from her students. (Student messages, sent while studying online, contained screen shots of the page from where the message of help was sent). They were expected to mark electronic attendance in every class period, the LMS allowed different options for marking

Student engagement: On average the students spent 5.25 hours per week on online assignments for all five subjects. All students had different assignment questions with the same degree of difficulty, minimising the scope of any unfair means. Students received instant feedback with solutions on all assignments and option to retake assignments if score was not satisfactory, minimising anxiety level. Student survey conducted, using system’s survey tools, had more than 90% positive response to all the survey questions, indicating total freedom from anxiety and forward looking approach for every assignment The principal reported that student’s reading and writing skills have improved as reported by the teachers to her. Teachers reported that their work load of doing traditional routine tasks like grading, recording, reporting, and even counseling has significantly reduced, and time saved is used for their other professionally rewarding engagements like: studying before taking class for completing the cycle (Tutorial

as lecture notes-homework-quiz), watching students activity reports of their work online, and staying in touch with them through e-mails and weekly online announcements. For feedback video please visit: bit.ly/educofeedback • Service providers, staff of “Educo Development Foundation”, spent extensive amount of time in providing support to students and teachers during the first year, but that was reduced, just after one year, to courtesy visits to school. New batch of sixth graders picked up from their student peers, and teachers knew what they had to do. The yearly lesson plan created in the first year was virtually duplicated with small adjustments for the second year, meaning there was no need of additional teacher training in the second year except for one meeting of EDF staff for overview of the first year results and orientation of new features of LMS updated based on their recommendations during the previous year. Best student performers, judged exclusively based on their online activity records and performance in online assignments, were recognised with trophies. One of the most interesting observation was that there was a strong positive correlation between the time spent online on assignments and their grades in online assignments and paper-pencil tests. Because of the commitment of the school administration, all teething issues, and problems related to EWS students not having internet access at home were carefully managed and resolved by the school. The objective of this study was to establish that given proper guidance, tools and training to the teachers, effective well planned integration of the use of technology can make a real difference. Resistance to change and initial teething problems can be easily resolved if the service providers and the school administration are committed to be the partners of change, as was the case in this study. Findings of this study clearly indicate that what is envisioned in NEP can be achieved, at a national level. Resources needed are available, as mentioned here. What is needed is to officially conduct such pilots at a larger scale for greater awareness and acceptability. Every week, teacher had two major tasks: i) to complete the cycle of activities (Tutorial-Homework-Quiz) before discussing in class and before assigning to students; ii) check her class’s online activities and send reminders to those who lagged behind in completing their assignments. Teacher had the option to modify any assessment item, if considered inappropriate based on what she was to discuss in class. Hopefully, during her own study, she was better prepared to conduct her presentation in class and gain more confidence on what students would get in assignments. This is what we call continuous professional development. The lesson plans included summative assessments at the end of school terms and the final. Every summative assessment had an online Adaptive Practice Testing (APT), for the students to prepare for the main tests. All types of real time student progress and activity reports were available to teachers and the school principal under their own logins. Parents received automated weekly reports on their child’s performance through emails and text messages.

It is creating doubts in the minds of young students.” Questioning the media’s role in improving the education ecosystem across the country, Dr Rao said, “With a population of around 140 crore of which 50 crore — a bit less than half of the population belongs to the age group of 5-24. We have got 900 universities; 40,000 colleges; nine lakh faculty members;

and 3.5 crore students out of 140 crore. Nowadays, it is very common in media publications and news papers to create panic about Indian education sector.” Suggesting the measures for improving the current scenario, Dr Rao suggested that the educators can play major role in that. He said, “It has been done by publishing the stories like: Engineering colleges are closing down!!! Is there a problem and others? It is very important for us as educationist to come together and reveal the truth that there is no such crisis, only a mismatch. This mismatch has to be tuned right without being panic.” He also defines that what exactly are the changes required for education sector. Emphasising that not the basic education rather we need to change the practices, he said, “Another very common thing we hear nowadays is that the education system needs to be changed. It is important to note here that we need not to change the education basics rather we just need to change education practices and adopt latest technologies. We need to inculcate confidence among the youth so that they don’t get stressed due to ridiculous stories.”

So, the State has over 2,700 colleges with more than 9 lakh students.” “Every Year, over 1,20,000 students in undergraduate arts, commerce and science courses (BA, BCom, BSc) are admitted to government colleges across Rajasthan. We received more than four lakh applications in this regard,” he added. He also described how the department focuses on bringing

ne important thing that comes to everyone’s mind that after digitisation of education, will teachers be required? Teachers will always be required as technology can assist a teacher but cannot replace them,” said Dr R S Panwar, Director, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Rabindranath School of Excellence, Pune. He was speaking at the Inaugural session of 12th School Leadership Summit Pune. Dr Panwar discussed various important aspects that may support in improving the education sector. Sharing his thoughts on technology’s role in education sector, Dr Panwar said, “The use of technology and digital tools in education is growing at a rapid rate. It is likely that after 50 years, we may find that there are no physical schools. Practices like Flipped Classrooms are on similar lines. We must be thankful technology and educationist who helped us to realise that how digital tools can improve teaching-learning processes.” Describing about how the school was started, Dr Panwar

said, “Bharati Vidyapeeth started functioning with certificate examinations in English and Mathematics for the school going children. Nowadays, the schools under the aegis of Bharati Vidyapeeth assists in holistic development of students right from pre-primary to higher secondary classes. She shared her thoughts during a panel discussion on the topic – Changing Dynamics of Higher Education in a Globalised Context: Envisioning Strategies for Future. These parameters will not only help the institutes to improve their ranking but it will also help students choose the most suitable institute as per their requirements,” she added. Prof Mahor also suggested that the higher education must serve every community in India for sustainable development. According to her, “In order to have sustainable development in the country, it is necessary to serve the local communities. It means that the higher education must empower our grass root level workers like farmers, labourers, mechanics and others. Education will help them to know about the best practices of respective sectors and boost their productivity.” Sharing her thoughts on encouraging innovation in higher education landscape of the country, she said, “Innovation in higher education should not only be limited to adopting new technologies rather we also need to focus on adopting the latest pedagogical practices. It is often heard from the institutes that our curriculum is at par to the global standards which is a good thing. However, the curriculum must also serve the needs of our country’s requirement then only we can be successful.” She also raised a very important issue of brain drain in the country. Suggesting a solution for the same, Prof Mahor said, “A huge portion Indian taxpayers’ money is being spent on teaching the students who lately work in a foreign country. It is bad for country’s growth and the Government must bring such policies which may help India to retain its talent.”

‘TECHNOLOGY IN HANDS OF GOOD TEACHERS, A BOON FOR EDUCATION SYSTEM’

“W

e don’t need technology geeks which are good teachers; we need teaching geeks who are good with technology. Because I firmly believe, no technology can replace a teacher but definitely good technology given to a good teacher will absolutely change the environment,” said Brijesh Karia, National Business Head, Robomate+. He was speaking at the 12th School Leadership Summit Pune, organised by Elets Tchnomedia and powered by digitalLEARNING on May 18, 2019. Karia was among the key speakers who graced the inaugural session of the summit with their presence. In his address, Karia talked about certain pressure points students are facing and best practices being followed in the last 2-3 years. Highlighting the fuss created around Class 10 board exams, he said, “I am working with 300 plus schools across the length and breadth of the country. We have been seeing a lot of changes. Everyone would agree that board has become the centre of a child’s life, especially Class 10 students. I was talking to one of my students recently and it made me realise that children are put under so much stress, pressure, and durance for no reason whatsoever”. Sharing his personal communiqué with a child over the matter, Karia said, “When we talk to students, when we counsel them, we ask one question – “What is your biggest problem? Their biggest problem is lack of time. After spending 6 to 7 hours in school they are forced to go to tuitions for 2-3 hours. So, 10 hours of a day either they are sitting in

the school or a coaching class plus 1-2 hours of travelling. Then after coming back home from coaching, they have to finish homework given at school as well as tuition. Moreover, the problem increases if any surprise test is there. Such a huge stress confuses all the students and eventually they end up studying nothing.” Thereafter, he talked about what the schools pan India are doing to solve the problem of the students. Karia said, “One best practice that I have seen across the country is use of technology. Most of the schools are using technology in an excellent manner. I know about some schools which are doing flipped classroom pedagogy. They are telling the students in advance that tomorrow I am going to teach you certain topic, why don’t you read/watch that topic and come. So children know beforehand that this is going to happen.” “Singhania School in Thane – which is one of the top ICSE schools of the country, has created an app for the students where teachers are giving recorded video lessons. So what happens is – students have learnt from the teacher, once they go home they don’t feel the need to go to tuitions. They open the app do the revision and their studies are done. So that’s what schools are doing,” he added. “Another best practice is conferences like the one we are attending today. Schools must send their teachers here. There are certain wonderful discussions that happen in the panel. Believe me we have learnt a lot by just listening to some of the key industry speakers. This is one thing that I feel will help in changing the dynamics in the school,” Karia concluded.

he present teaching system involves lectures, readings, demonstrations, and audio-visuals but we have understood that it doesn’t help in enhancing grasping power of a child. Instead, hands on learning, teaching others, group discussions have a higher retention rate. And this has been proven as well that by involving kids in learning process balances education and enjoyment simultaneously,” said Pravesh Mohey, Regional Manager – Marketing & Sales, Butterfly Edufields. He was speaking at the 11th School Leadership Summit 2019, Chandigarh, on the topic: ‘Bridging the Learning Divide – Experiential Learning is the Way Forward’. The summit was organised on April 12, 2019 by Elets Technomedia, a premier media and technology research organisation. Explaining about his company’s narrative in providing hands-on learning experience to students, Mohey said, “We at Butterfly intent to address and bridge this learning gap by offering affordable Hands on Solutions in Science & Math. This might not answer all the whys but will surely bring out the fear of ‘why’ among children”. As per the National Training Laboratories, Maine, USA – the average retention rate among students is highest with Hands on Learning – 75% whereas with discussion it is 50%. On the other hand, it is 30% with demonstration and 20% with audio visual whereas shockingly it is lowest in reading and learning with just 10% and 5% respectively. The data was revealed in an industry presentation given by Mohey during his address at the summit. Explaining the reason for the name ‘Butterfly’ and his company’s vision, Mohey said, “We know the evolution of

caterpillar to a butterfly. Every child has that potential and should get that opportunity to evolve like a butterfly from a caterpillar. We want to develop every child in a way that he gets a chance to learn from different formats”. “Just like caterpillar every child has the potential to transform into a unique individual. Our vision is to make learning more enriching, engaging and fun for all sections of children in developing world and around. When children apply what they learn, they become doers and that’s what we want in the world right now. Doers are the ones who succeed in their chosen fields in the future,” he added. Further, highlighting the importance of answering questions of kids, Mohey stated, “We cannot make a kid understand something by simply telling it – Ye Aisa hi hota hai (it is like this only) rather it is important to explain ‘why it is so’. So at butterfly, we make sure to appropriately explain “why” to the kids.” “Interestingly, so far, Butterfly has been able to impact the lives of 11, 00,000 students, touched 9,000 schools, covered 18 states and expanded in 3 countries. Skills like scientific temperament, observational and critical thinking, curiosity and perseverance have been inculcated by the students while involved in hands on learning,” he added. In Butterfly Edufield’s presentation – it was reported that an improvement of 40 percentile in Science was recorded in schools where Butterfly Edufield’s Hands on Activity related to Conductivity, Electric Circuit was done whereas a 25 percentile improvement was measured in Maths subject in which Hands on Activity related to geometry was conducted.
