21st Century Schools Being father of two it was a big challenge for me to pick up the school where I can send my children. It is not an easy task to select a school for one’s children these days. There are lot of issues that you need to keep in mind while selecting a school. Is the school good in academics? Does it have a comprehensive system and infrastructure for inculcating interest in extra-curricular activities? Will it take care of the overall development of the child? You also need to take account of whether the school is adopting new techniques of education or is believes in following the traditional systems? The point I am trying to make is that today most Indian parents have to go through lot of stress in finding a school for their children. One major issue is that the good schools have a very limited number of seats, so even if a parent is able to find a school that is most suitable, it is not necessary that he will be able to get his children placed there. School education in India has been drastically transformed during the last few decades. Today parents expect the schools to take care of not only the academic performance of their children, but also their overall development. With the entry of new private schools providing plethora of services to students and multiple curriculums, choosing right school has become really complex and brain storming tasks. This is one issue of digitalLEARNING that I think most parents would appreciate. This issue is all about rating the schools on basis of the most important factors. As you turn the pages, you will find the ranking of some of the key schools located in the country. Mainly we have tried to select and rate the top schools located in six zones - North India, Central India, West India, South India, East India and North-East India. India is witnessing a big leap in school education sector, which is fuelling the demand for strong leadership abilities among school leaders to take this growth forward. Taking this aim forward, we are organising school leadership summit 2014 on 31st January 2014 at New Delhi. We will be delighted to felicitate schools featured in this issue at the event for their excellence in performance in school education. We look forward to see you at the event!

CBSE to conduct MBBS, BDS exams in MP Against the backdrop of various scams in the Madhya Pradesh Pre-medical Test (MPPMT) examination in 2013, the Director of Medical Education Madhya Pradesh has decided to conduct MBBS and BDS examinations through CBSE and MDS examination through AIIMS instead of Professional Examination Board (Vyapam) next year onwards. The move has come in the light of the scam during the Dental and Medical Admission Test (DMAT) and (MPPMT) in 2013, where many students were found guilty and were disqualified after checking their copies. The disqualified students have already filed cases with the High Court and a decision is awaited. Many more may be found guilty in DMAT and MPPMT scam following the probe being made by the police and medical officials.

More Indian students take GRE as job prospects fall in homeland

There has been a 70% increase in the number of students from India taking up the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for admission to post graduate studies abroad. The number of candidates from India appearing for GRE increased from 33,504 in 2011-12 to 56,782 in 2012-13. India’s increase is much higher than the China’s 45% or 6% rise in US candidates. India comprise the second largest group of test takers, after the US (3,37,782) with China (42,357) in the third place. Receding job opportunities in the country have prompted students to look overseas. Also there has been an improvement in the US economy; as a result the students are no longer apprehensive to study abroad. They are more positive about getting a job at the end of their studies. US graduate schools are already witnessing a spike in foreign enrollments and with the admissions growing at the fastest pace since 2006, experts say that Indian students have fuelled this increase. In addition, the easier visa norms of US to apply for higher studies have encouraged students to apply for the courses overseas.

New veterinary university in Odisha soon In a move to improve the animal husbandry and livestock sector, the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) has proposed Odisha government to open a separate veterinary university in the state. VCI president, Narayan Mohanty has proposed the Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik to set up a separate veterinary university to improve research on various veterinary sciences. Speaking during the three-day Veterinary Pathology Congress-2013, VCI president pointed out that it is the lack of funds and infrastructure in both research and service sectors that are the main reasons for the unsatisfactory growth of veterinary sciences in India. VCI is also contemplating to uniform the syllabus of all the veterinary colleges across India and customize it according to the local needs. The proposal is under active deliberation of the state government.

Job scarcity leaving professional course seats vacant in colleges

Students are giving professional courses a miss this year. It is much evident from the increase in vacant seats in professional courses from 20% in 2011 to a significant 30% in 2013. According to experts, the reason students are letting such courses a go by is that many professional courses are not able to give value for money due to a number of reasons like poor placement policy of the institutes and scarcity of good teachers. An alarming 30% of 1.11 lakh seats in professional courses in engineering, medical, paramedical, MCA and pharmacy colleges remained vacant this year even after three rounds of admission process. One of the major areas of concern is that there are a large number of self financed colleges, especially in the interiors, which have not been able to attract even 10 to 20 students leading to losses worth Rs 2 crore.

NIT to provide free knowledge support to less privileged students The National Institute of Technology (NIT- Adityapur) has started free coaching classes for the under privileged children of the surrounding villages with the aim to provide knowledge support to aspiring engineers from the marginalized community. The Centre for Community Welfare of NIT, as part of the social responsibility program has introduced free coaching classes for the students of Class 8th- Class 12th of the adjoining villages. This is also an effort to prepare these students for entrance examination to various engineering colleges. The scheme inaugurated on Novemebr 1, 2013 will help students from marginalised community to make their headway into the institutes of high repute like NIT. The students of NIT College will be taking up the classes, if required the faculty might join them in the future. Girl students will be highly encouraged to enroll for these classes said the college administration on the inauguration of the scheme. The NIT management and students are gathering lot of appreciation for this initiative to empower the economically backward children and creating a better future for them. digitalLEARNING / December 2013

Methodology

We Ranked Them

How

R

anking top schools of India is one of the most challenging tasks, given the large size of the ecosystem. To start with, we sent the ranking questionnaire format to more than 10, 000 schools across the country. Schools displayed amazing enthusiasm in the activity and 5, 476 schools sent us the filled-in questionnaire. We also collected available information from the school websites in case of missing information in the submitted questionnaire. We allotted cumulative ranks to the schools and formed a statewise ranking, seggregated in six zones of India - North, Central, South, West, East and North-East.

Schools have been evaluated based on the following indicators School Reputation: Details pertaining to the year of inception, national level awards won by the school in various summits, and the number of students who passed out of the school and are studying in different top level institutes and abroad were considered to evaluate this category. Teachers’ Competency: Under this indicator, we have considered the number of permanent teachers, their qualification, experience, and training programs organised by the school for grading. Academic Excellence: Under this indicator, we evaluated schools based on teacher-student ratio, average class size, academic achievement awards to the students, and co-curricular hours per week/ student. Infrastructure: This being one of the key

12

December 2013 / digitalLEARNING

parameters in ensuring healthy learning environment. The schools were evaluated on the basis of the campus area, total built-up area, labs, auditorium and the use of ICT in teaching and learning. Students’ Development: In today’s competitive and ever changing world, an overall development of a student can be achieved only if the school acknowledge the importance of skill training programs like life skills, leadership skills, sports, etc along with academics. So, we asked schools to submit details on the number of parent teacher meetings per year, life skills training for students, vocational and other skills, personal counselling for students, career counselling, excursion and outdoor activities, social responsibility, foreign languages taught, facilities for children with special needs,

societies and clubs in the school, student-teacher exchange programmes and alumni database. Sports and Extra Curricular activities: Sports are important for the overall development of children. So, we evaluated schools based on details like extra-curricular hours per week/student, sports infrastructure and the awards and accolades in sports won by the school. Academic Performance: Academic performance for a child is of paramount importance while pursuing higher education, to be able to secure a bright and fulfilling future. The percentage of students acquiring marks above 90 percent between 75-90 percent and less than 75 percent was taken into consideration while evaluating the academic performance of schools.

Q& A

Preparing Students for Future An alumnus of IIM, Bangalore and St Stephen’s, a visionary who has led CL’s dramatic growth from a one-man startup to one of Asia’s leading education corporate. He has trained thousands of students, teachers and corporate executives. Satya Narayana R, Founder and Chairman, Career Launcher and Indus World School shares his insight on various aspects of education in India Please share the genesis of Indus World School. The journey of Indus World began in 2005. The rules and law in India makes it an arduous task to open a new school but the journey of our School has been quantitatively challenging and qualitatively rewarding. What is the USP of your group? The group realises that teaching a nursery student today has its impact on the individual and society for the next 50 years. The responsibility of the schools is to be able to dig into their imagination and devise a system which is wired into today’s world rather than being a photocopy of the past. The Indus World School’s prime focus is on delivering quality education through dynamic classroom practices and new teacher capacity building practices to be able to provide an education to the students which is wired into the future. How do you ensure quality is maintained across all Indus World schools? The group continuously invents and reinvents its policies and teaching methodology by understanding the need of the area in which the school is operational. Maintaining the quality of the schools is an operationally intensive, day-night continuous improvement job. Education imparted at various locations across India has to be improvised according to the area and the same framework does not apply to all the institutions.

24

December 2013 / digitalLEARNING

Satya Narayana R with school kids Do you have any plans to expand the group in coming years? The group has a vision to establish schools across India. However, keeping in mind the availability of limited financial resources, we devised three models of partnerships to expand the group. The three models include: Infra partner, the school land and building is owned by the individual and is leased to the Indus world Group and the running of the school is undertaken by the group without any interference of the infra partner. The second model is where the group owns the land, the building and is involved in the running of the school. There are three schools which are wholly owned by the group. The third model is the Education Partner where the owner of the school has to have a strong educational background and a willingness to

improvise and improve upon the structure provided by Indus group. The content and manuals and training is provided by the Indus group for an education partner. In addition to the above models, we have an embedded system in all the schools to maintain high quality standards in the schools spread across India. What are the challenges of opening schools in India? The major challenge is to gather finance and get approvals to set up and run the schools. Relentless effort goes behind getting regulations approved in order to start a new institution. The people with the right attitude also suffer cause of the humongous effort required to get the requisitive approvals and that system has to eventually change.

Q& Learning, Unlearning A

and Relearning

Neeta Bali, Principal, GD Goenka World School talks about the importance to learn, unlearn and relearn for teachers. In conversation with Praggya Guptaa, Elets News Network

Major challenges upfront Seizing the students to use Internet effectively and in a manner which does not compromise their moral values.

l

Ensuring that the values that are taught in school are not loggerhead with the values that children learn at home.

l

Ensuring that you upgrade the qualification of your teachers as it is constantly about unlearning and relearning so how receptive are teachers to the professional development programmes as there are these old timers who resist change, how to inspire these old timers to keep pace with the changing times.

l

You have been associated with the education sector for a long time, what have been your experiences of working in this sector? Almost 30 years back when I started my career as a teacher, the attitude towards the whole teaching community was not encouraging. Teachers were not aware, definitely not accomplished and also not open to new learning techniques. With the passage of time, the concept of e-Learning and digitisation has made its mark. The entire process of teaching-learning has become vibrant, interactive as well as an interesting process for both the teachers and students. The students today, have better access to laptops, iPads and eResources which has widened their horizons consider-

l Striking a fine balance between counseling and teaching, how to disseminate information in an interesting manner. It is very important to teach in a manner where you are able to sustain the interest of the students.

ably. Earlier the teacher controlled the environment of a classroom but now the teacher has become a facilitator who creates a conducive learning environment, allowing children to learn at their own pace and in their own way. Over a period of time, teaching has become quite a challenging and yet a very fulfilling profession. Challenging because children are very open-minded

they know more, they question more. So you have to be a step ahead to be able to address their queries. And teachers will slowly but steadily have to unlearn what they have learned over a period of time and relearn what the need of the hour is. What are the major initiatives the schools has taken during your tenure? I believe in strong academic inputs, I have been able to bring up the school results. We are trying to match the bench marks in the world. We have had world toppers in Mathematics, last two years we have had national toppers in Economics. I firmly believe that not every child is out there to be an academic achiever, so we need to channelise the energies of children and give them a sense of accomplishment through some other means. My full initiative is to give a holistic education, so I lay a lot of emphasis on co-curricular activities; I refuse to treat them as ‘Extra’ curricular activities. It is something like a hidden curriculum, things like values and team-work, collaborative learning, co-operation which can only happen through these activities and of course working on the self esteem of the children. I have been trying to promote the spirit of International mindedness, which I have done through the ISA (International School Award) Program and I am proud to share that we were recently conferred with the international school award by the British Council. I feel that every child should actually experience the true spirit of International mindedness.

An alumni of Doon School and St Stephens’ College, Sumer Singh, Principal, Daly College, Indore has been Head of the Lawrence School, Sanawar for seven years and Director of the Asian School. He also taught at the Doon School and at Gordonstoun, Scotland, Boxhill, St Anne’s, England and UWC, Wales. He was Advisor (Education) Government of Punjab. Author of three books-’Doon The Story of a School’ and ‘Unity in Diversity’ and ‘The Daly College’ share his experience on changing school education system in India.

nitely lower the educational standards and competency in this country. Would you like to share any major obstacle faced by Daly College? More and more Indians desire to provide good education to their children. The demand for admission in good schools is growing much faster than the number of seats available. Possibly the biggest challenge being faced by us at Daly College is the pressure for admissions that we are unfortunately unable to meet. Would you like to comment on Supreme Court guidelines on ragging? The Supreme Court had ruled that schools must take firm action against cases of ragging. But, at the same time, the Parliament has ruled that a school cannot take any mental or physical action against any student nor can they suspend or expel them. It is indeed tough for school authorities at times to deal with such cases on campus and punish the students in case they violate the guidelines. How has education sector evolved over past last five years? The school education is not healthy. With all good intentions to provide free and compulsory education, the government has enacted a law which will defi-

What are the new initiatives undertaken in your school? Our school believes in student initiatives and student leadership. There are any number of innovations taking place on a regular basis. These include building

of hostels in the school for hearing impaired and mentally retarded in the Missionaries of Charity Home; toilets for girls in government schools; a green club with demonstration centre; garbage management; resource centre for students of Indore; and a course for foreign students on Indian Culture. What are the special training programmes undertaken by your school for teacher development? Our teachers are supported to take part in workshops and regular educational upgrades. Nearly 30 teachers travel abroad every year. Please share your experience as an administrator. As an administrator, I realise that the major challenge is to keep up with all the suggestions and resultant changes that occur owing to student and staff initiatives. Would you like to comment on the impact of RTE on school education? Parliament has now stopped us from conducting entrance tests and therefore the very basis of our existence has been challenged. Admissions these days are merely based on lottery. Merit is no longer a key factor in granting admission to a student. This practice will obviously lead to degradadtion of quality of education in the long run.

Q& Training students for A

tomorrow is Challenging Carl Laurie, Principal, Christ Church School, Mumbai talks about changes in school system from pre-independence to post independence era. In conversation with Seema Gupta, Elets News Network

Please share your views on changing face of education system The education sector in India is going through exciting times over past five years. As estimated, 47 million children need to get basic education by 2020. Education over the last five years can be termed as a transition phase as India has seen a mushrooming of new educational institutions, backed by resources from industrial houses, jostling for their share and recognition. We have the pre-independence schools that had a head start, and rightly can claim to be pioneers in quality value based education. Fortunately, there is space for the old and the new to co-exist and network together contributing to nation building through education. How can we prepare students for future? We have no choice but to move from the old to the new, the demarcating year 1989, that is, pre and post the impacting ‘world wide web’ but there is optimism as always in human capacity to adapt and change, the young are more comfortable with this phenomena, but it was the pre-1989 generation that created the computer, so there is no reason why the challenge of digital age in education should cause a murmur in hearts of senior and older teachers. Earlier education given by schools lasted a life time, but today what is valid this year, may be out dated next year. So, the greatest challenge is to prepare our students for tomorrow that we haven’t seen, a tomorrow that will be so different from today, and nothing like yesterday.

ing tech savy students and experienced teachers together so that the beneficiaries are the students at the end. Please throw light on special training programmes for teachers’ development? Real life is the ultimate open book exam for students, hence it’s imperative that we, as educators prepare ourselves to prepare our students. We at CCS invest a substantial part in teacher development, and staff development programmes Right from training in fire-fighting equipment, disaster management to training in soft skills, computer based teaching, motivation and

“Value is the most important principle that governs every decision and is something that never grows old, outdated or stale Please highlight some initiatives that CCS took up under your leadership. Value is the most important principle that governs every decision and is something that never grows old, outdated or stale. If values can be inculcated in our young, they will emerge like a tree that withstands all pressures. The system of having Mentors for smaller groups of 8-10 students helps the children to confide and stay motivated academically. Being an old school, nearly 200 years, we have a rich blend of experienced and not so experienced staff. Technology bridges this gap but bring-

counseling skills to dealing with children with problem and an inclusive education to leadership workshops. It is a continuous and happening process ingrained in the psyche of all in the school. What has been your priority as an administrator? As an administrator, the biggest challenge is not educating the child, but the parent. We have to make parents understand that their child is the only star for them, but for a teacher, all the children in our care, are stars. We love them, we believe in them and we want the best for each of them that is why we are teachers.

Q& Teachers Getting Trained A

to Become Techno-Savvy

Besides providing an all round education, Sanjay Godhawat International School, Kolhapur, Maharashtra offers guidance in critical thinking, social openness and purposeful research. Principal Sasmita Mohanty, in conversation with Seema Gupta, Elets News Network Please elaborate on key issues faced by schools. The challenges today faced by the institution are: installing and retaining the value system among the stake holders, disciplining the students, making faculty competent to use of technology, and retaining the good faculty members. Do you think that government policies been instrumental in bringing about changes in education? Government policies have brought about both negative and positive impact in the system. For instance, CBSE introduced CCE pattern which gives scope for teachers to identify the interest of the students in co-curricular activities and students have a stress free education. However, it has also has reduced the seriousness of the students towards learning. It might prove difficult for the students to qualify for the further bigger competitive examinations in life. What are the new initiatives undertaken by your school? In our school, all the class rooms are digital class rooms. We have collaborated with NIIT and Educomp. Besides this, we have three computer labs with Wi Fi connectivity. All teachers are given training to more techno-savvy to use all the modern gazettes, multimedia, power point presentation interactive boards etc while teaching in the class. Our school has the english language lab where student can correct there pronunciation and complete their assignment online. We also have introduced robotic lab in our school. Recently our school had organized the west zone girl’s football tournament. In near future we have the plan of establishing Science Park. Please elaborate on the strategies used by your school to enhance learning experience of students. We follow some simple means to ensure a better learning experience for students. We keep them busy in constructive activities, give them practical experience through various projects on community service, organise student exchange programme and talks from different professionals. Apart from these, we also train them to set goals, know their aptitude for a subject. We also mentor and counsel the students and ensure good exposure for them in various fields. K-12 Speak

Q& Government Should give Land A to Schools at Lower Cost A Murali Mukund, Chairman, Jubilee Public School, Hyderabad talks about changes in education system over last 25 years. In conversation with Seema Gupta, Elets News Network.

What are the factors associated with the changing paradigm of education system of the country.? The advent of television has set the change of education system in India. It has not only initiated use of technology for spreading education but also sown the seeds of distraction among the students. Gradually technology in the form of Google, Facebook and education software has become a dominant factor in changing the education pattern in India. In the present scenario the tools of technology have positive influence and negative influences. The chalk and talk method, slowly was supported by tools of technology, such as over head projectors, smart boards and now it is the ‘age of digital learning’. From being instructors, teachers have gradually become facilitators. The liberalisation of economy also had an indirect impact on education system because of globalisation. The practices of western world and the use of technology have been accepted in India. The computer revolution in the world has led to more opportunities in software sector. Services came into limelight and students started opting for different options. Earlier maximum emphasis was laid on Engineering and MEdical courses. The Education system was forced to open up according to these new demands of jobs. Are we striking the right balance between quality and quantity in schools? Over the years, education system has become commercialised as Government

74

December 2013 / digitalLEARNING

has failed to deliver the required results. The demand for education has caught the attention of many existing entrepreneurs and also new budding entrepreneurs. This has led to mushrooming of new schools everywhere in India and the short supply of teachers was bound to happen. Not only there is short supply of teachers but acute short supply of ‘quality’ teachers. Today, unless the school is located in a vast area, proper teaching in a natural set up is not possible. The cancerous

High cost of land and infrastructure, shortage of quality teachers and restriction by Government in respect of fee collection are major challenges for opening schools growth of cities and match box homes culture has put a lot of demand on the land and the land costs have shot up beyond the roof. Hence, government should allot land to schools at a lower price to encourage setting up of new schools. Whilst, the government can impose restrictions on the fees as they have subsidised the land cost. The challenges today for opening a new school include, high cost of land and infrastructure, shortage of teachers, shortage of quality teachers and restriction by Government in respect of fee collection. Please share some initiatives taken up by your school. Our school was established more than 25 years ago and has a good reputation

in providing quality education at an affordable cost to all sectors of people. Though our fees structure is kept at a very reasonable level, we have ensured that we provide the best of facilities like in any other corporate school. During the last 10 years, we have understood the importance of utilising technology in the school and began implementing the same in the best of way and changed our slogan as Tradition and technology. Our school is now a technologically equpipped institution. We have digitised classrooms, modern English labs, a very advanced professional audio- visual studio set up along with focused development on all aspects such as sports, extracurricular activities.

“Looking Beyond MCQs in Computer Based Testing”

T

raditionally computer based tests have largely focused on MCQs or True/False type questions for creating assessments which aren’t viewed favorably while evaluating a student’s learning. Pedagogically designed computer-based tests, going beyond standard multiple choice questions will help measure knowledge and skill levels of learners and several strategies can be applied to motivate learners using Online/Computer-Based Assessments. This is the philosophy behind the design of marksplus- Test Authoring and Online Assessment System. marksplus- Test Authoring and Online Assessment System provides an intuitive platform for examination/assessment authors, administrators and participants while providing easy customizability options for institutional branding. A highly configurable tool, marksplus can be customised to every organisation’s assessment or test requirements. Most importantly, the tool is secure, robust and can easily scale. marksplus - Test Authoring and Online Exam System enables institutions to author, administer and schedule participants for tests for critical functions ranging from student admission tests, campus placement, certifications, internal assessments, compliance training, process training and others. marksplus Author is a comprehensive and intuitive exam authoring module which allows for examination providers to create 13 different types of questions to suit various testing objectives and has powerful tagging features like Bloom’s, Topics and Difficulty levels. marksplus allows for the scheduling of assessments in a flexible manner with multiple rules in play. Examiners can use it to deliver assessments on a date and time of choice to specific batches

of participants and build in further restrictions based on IP address, locations, participant identification etc. marksplus Participant module ensures that participants effectively use their assessment time. With options like flagging for review and a live indicator of answered and unanswered questions the participant is free to navigate within the assessment and focus on areas that need specific review or attention. Additional features like marksplus Secure provides an optional lock-in browser that provides security to the test delivery by preventing participants from moving out of the test interface. Participants will be unable to copy screens or access another application or browse the Internet. The software also provides several standard reports catering to all the stake holders of the assessment. These include analysis on individual performance, group performance and question analysis. marksplus is used by many academic and corporate customers globally to conduct internal assessments and certification exams. Yokogawa, a Japanese engineering company is

successfully using marksplus to certify their employees in Middle East on critical processes, thereby enhancing their employees’ skills and readiness to tackle critical issues. TUV SUD uses marksplus for the acclaimed Cloud Computing Certification exam. marksplus provided them the advantage of conducting certification tests at very short notice for any number of test-takers. livery patterns, experiential learning, small class sizes, healthy student - teacher ratio and digital learning processes, values and discipline are also tending to become quite hazy.

Please share your thoughts on evolution of education over last decade. Education is quite significant at the moment. Global boundaries are blurring which automatically leads us to a plethora of knowledge reciprocity. Naturally, there is a very positive momentum about knowledge of world culture, international mindedness in terms of curriculum plan and design, understanding, tolerance and empathy. To be able to embrace this momentum and channelize it positively, is the most significant facet of this evolution. What are the challenges faced in imparting education in schools? Children and parents are more involved in the process of learning than being mere spectators. As a result, orienting and changing the mindsets of the teaching community to accept the child as an equal stake holder in the teaching learning process is a great challenge. Besides, with children being supported with child-centric curriculum and de-

Q& Most Schools Opting for World A

Class Education over Value Based With the aim of providing world class education to each student, this 125 year old school still believes in the traditional value addition system among the students. Fr Santy Mathew S J, Principal, St Joseph’s School, in conversation with Pragya Gupta, Elets News Network

Changes in the school department were dramatic. There was a steady increase in the number of day scholars. There had always been a scattering of English, French and German boys, now students from China, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand and Burma started arriving. In 1954, 28 nationalities could be found in the college, including the staff. At present, the school has 500 boarders, 700 day scholars and 81 teaching staff. The school celebrated 125 years of its existence in 2013 and Pranab Mukherjee, President of India inaugurated the Jubilee celebrations on November 10, 2013. What changes do you envision in the school education system in India? These days education has become nothing but pure business for many. Schools are keen on world class education not value based one. But some schools still care about enlightening students with knowledge and values both. With several boards coming up, say, foreign boards and many different Indian boards, children have got brilliant options to choose from.

Please share the experience of St Joseph’s School’s journey of 125 years Established on February 13, 1888 at Sunnybank in Darjeeling town, we started functioning with 18 boarders and seven day scholars. In 1899, the student body consisted of 193 boys. By 1947, the year of Independence, the number reached 422, including 93 college students.

What is the best way to adapt to technological advancements? We encourage children to do lots of practical work as I believe the more they practice it, the more tech-friendly they will become. What are your views on current value education system in schools? I think until and unless it is practiced,

it has no value at all. During the winter vacations, we open the school for the poor children. We host several courses on spoken English courses, Mathematics, Computers, extra-curricular or cocurricular activities. We arrange free lunch for them. We believe that by introducing value education books in the school, we cannot solve the ‘moral education’ problem. That is why we give our students an example by serving the society in any way possible. As far as co-curricular or extracurricular activities are concerned, I have noticed that our students have amazing talent in almost every field like music, singing, dancing, acting etc. But academics still needs a little push from the parents’ side. Last year, we had organised a workshop for parenting. We brought people from outside to conduct it which became a huge success. Recently, when I went to conduct a workshop at a school, parents who were present complained that the teachers are kept changing frequently. I asked, “how many of you want your children to be teachers?” Not a single one replied in affirmative. It’s unfortunate that most people opt for this profession not because of their passion for this but because they have no other decent option left. Nowadays more and more teachers are looking for money through tuitions, some of them actually left the institution mainly because they were not allowed to take tuitions. But exceptions are always there, as I have met many who were inspired by their own teachers and wanted to be like them.

“Quality Education”

The Ultimate Desire by Parents! Quality education is the need of the hour and with the result, at the same time the boards of education and learning must develop a plan to help schools, teachers and parents educate children about safe, responsible use of the Internet By Team Next Education

Q

uality is defined as an art of fellowship in academics. The polished preface defines and desires the requisite towards the requirements of the 21st century learners and it is ultimately a new phenomenon in totality. Quality education is the need of the hour and with the result, at the same time the boards of education and learning must develop a plan to help schools, teachers and parents educate children about safe, responsible use of the Internet. For example, one must encourage schools and families to place computers in rooms that are shared (such as family rooms, dining rooms, offices or libraries), where children can use the internet with others around them. And teach children never to share personal information (name, address, telephone, or credit card number) online. This may go a long way in making this a success. The day-to-day activities at school and home education will provide a healthy liking for computer and this is required to foster appropriate use of the Internet among school-goers. It is also a point to debate despite the increasing use of computers in elementary schools, there hasn’t been a decrease in the formal teaching of penmanship. The children use just as much paper as they did before computers be-

came a classroom standard. Hence one has to keep in mind that writing with a pencil involves an equally important set of skills as typing on a keyboard. Exposure to the internet can help pre-schoolers and children in the early elementary grades master literacy and other cognitive skills and also can spur integration of these skills early in their development. Parents and school leaders who look for online opportunities for younger children can be guides to engaging, age-appropriate content. The internet can reinforce everyday learning opportunities and be a powerful tool for fostering interaction among adults and young children. It takes much to

conduct the new tool of knowledge in this regard. The task of the teaching gentry must ponder in regard to computing of this sort, they must help teachers, parents, and children use the internet more effectively for learning. For example, they ought to suggest education-related websites for parents and children to visit together - and give them learning activities to do once they get there. Offer education-related help for students online, like after-school tutoring. Provide teachers with professional development opportunities to help them model effective use of the Internet as a tool for students’ learning, including integrating Internet learning with regular

useful for daily survival, both in and out of school. The risk associated with this myth comes from placing too much emphasis on the computer as a “must” for children’s future welfare. It’s better to regard computer use as simply one more experience or tool that can support the development of the good old-fashioned learning skills such as being able to read and write, think logically, and solve and analyse problems. It can also enhance the learning process by allowing children to have experiences not possible without a computer. Ultimately out of the study it capsules more of the truth to have this machine as a tool rather than an aid for all times. One must utilize its measures as and when required from the children point of concern.

FUTURE SCOPE classroom learning. If teacher training takes place outside of regular school hours, offer teachers incentives to participate when possible. If teacher training pulls teachers out of the classroom, parents should be made to know why it is important to support this professional development. The usage of the internet to communicate more effectively with parents and students goes a long way to generate interest for all. For instance, launch school district or school websites or publicize websites in newsletters and places where parents are likely

reference only for generating pulses of craze and interest of being a netizen. And finally, engage the community. This can be very easily done through holding computer and Internet training classes for parents or hosting convenient opportunities for parents, community leaders, librarians, teachers, and others to talk together about children’s use of the Internet. Schools may want to collaborate with libraries, community computing centers, local colleges and universities, and other places that offer alternative access to computers.

The day-to-day activities at school and home education will provide a healthy liking for computer and this is required to foster appropriate use of the Internet among school-goers” to be. Update websites frequently with relevant, timely information. Post exemplary student work online, with teacher commentary explaining why this work meets academic standards. Make websites interactive by soliciting comments or holding public forums about education issues online. Encourage teachers, parents and students to communicate through email, make their email IDs and even communicate off-line with that

Educators and parents have been quite concerned over the years about possible negative effects of computer and internet on children’s desire to interact with others. Unlike television, however, the more interactive, child-controlled nature of some computer software can be conductive to sharing, taking turns and playing games together. Also the fact lies to the versatile saying that the familiarity and comfort with computers is certainly

The ultimate is ‘Quality Culture’. It counts in a big way to promote the very cause of darkness out of the old traditions. It is very easily encapsulated into the minds of the workforce, the users, and the public opinion and to the masses. IT has paved as the irresistible mantra for Survival, the capsules for Quality Culture, the tablet for Prosperity at large. Pressing it with the opinion of the masses is the fact that it is a Reality in practice. The boom of technology is bound to promote and enhance the image of Quality in Education and the Society in a big way. Thinking of Society, aiming a future, working for…. Without IT has become a Joke of the day. IT is there is stay and mandatory to breathe into…… As a matter of fact, Regardless of one’s career choice, one can benefit from knowledge of computer hardware and software, and how these components function together. Even if one’s job does not require him to work directly with a computer, this knowledge may help him to envision new ways of using computers in the work, resulting in a more productive work environment. This can also lead to career advancement opportunities. If one thinks this case is being overstated, and that computers are not being used that much, consider this: computers are popping up in places and professions that may seem unlikely.

According to a study done by ECCouncil, a global certification body for information security professionals, nearly 86% of student IT talent pool in India displays no awareness of cyber security basics; while a mere 13% was found to be trainable in the space. “This is very alarming news to the country’s corporate and defence establishments. India is known as the software and outsourcing capital of the world. However, recent industry data shows how vulnerable the Indian IT industry is. Lack of skills in both working professionals as well as students is a major area of concern for the nation,” says Amit kumar, president and co-founder, cyberfort . Cyberfort Technologies is one of the fastest emerging IT security and consulting firm in the most emerging field of Cyber Security. While the study is indicative of the fact that when the current curriculum has some introductory topics on the subject, focus via its inclusion as a separate subject is missing. India declared its first national cyber security policy in July this year, which aims to create 5 lakh information security professionals over next five years. “Given the fact the 86% of the current IT talent has no awareness of cyber security, the role of academia becomes all the more challenging,” says Amit.

In a recent move to up the ante on cyber security, the government has hired 4,446 experts. However, the number is miniscule compared to the increasing number of attacks on websites every month. Financial institutions, telecom, mobility, internet organisations and hospitals are more vulnerable to cyber threats today, because of the data they handle. According to reports by CERT-In, 4,191 Indian websites were hacked in the month of August this year, up from 1,808 in May this year. In fact, corporates too agree that they have a tough time filling up positions in the information security space. “It is difficult to find basic engineering talent, let alone talent in information security space. The problem is not with students, but the whole system. You can’t expect them to be good at something they are not taught,” says the CFO of an IT company who did not wish to be named. “The world is recognising vulnerabilities, leading to cyber threats and attacks. India holds a key position in the global IT and IT-enabled services map. Every country is taking steps towards building a talent pipeline towards a secure future and we urge Indian industry and academia to address the concerns to retain their leadership in the domain,” Dr Rajesh kumar VP cyberfort said.

By 2015, India will need at least 5,00,000 cyber professionals. Government, IT/ ITeS, financial institutions, telecom organisations and hospitals are more vulnerable to cyber threats.

...Supply Situation Is Bleak Only 0.97 percent of Indian students have the basic skills in information security. Just around 13percent of students have an understanding of concepts and can be trained in information security. More than 86 percent have not been made aware of skills or are not trainable. The world may acknowledge India as an information technology superpower, but its very own official cyber security workforce comprises mere 556 experts deployed in various government agencies.

Security Architecture Now, India is also setting up its own ‘cyber security architecture’ that will comprise the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) for threat assessment and information sharing among stakeholders, the Cyber Operation Centre that will be jointly run by the NTRO and the armed forces for threat management and mitigation for identified critical sectors and defence, and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) under the NTRO for providing cover to ‘critical information infrastructure’. The government is also coming up with a legal framework to deal with cyber security. The NSCS has identified over a dozen ‘critical information infrastructure’ sectors/ facilities requiring protection. These include the civil aviation sector (Air Traffic Control or ATC), Railways’ passenger reservation system and communication network, port management, companies and organisations in power, oil and natural gas sectors, banking and finance, and telecom sectors. The government of India along with private organizations is launching several initiatives to combat cyber attacks. However, the biggest challenge currently

India needs five lakh cybersecurity professionals by 2015 to support its fast growing Internet economy facing the country is the lack of cyber security professionals. According to recent data, India currently has around 556 certified cyber security professionals, which is miniscule when compared to China having nearly 25 million cyber experts or commandos. Experts note that the country would need 500,000 cyber security experts by 2015 to protect its IT infrastructure. As a result, they believe that the country should gear up to create a strong poThere are of course a few exceptions with some organizations across the country actively working towards this initiative. The inspiration to take up these subjects should be inculcated from the school level,” mentions Eugene Kaspersky, Founder and CEO-Kaspersky Lab. At a recent cyber security summit, he mentions that it is important for respective governments to partner with engineering and computer schools to offer courses in information security. The awareness however should be created at an even

preliminary level to combat the evils of cyber space. Like, recently the Gurgaon police organized a series of cyber security campaigns to sensitize students about threats of cyber crimes and make them aware of safe Internet practices and security measures to minimize this concern. Debasis Nayak, CIO, Asian School Of Cyber Laws believes there are ample opportunities in the cyber security space. He also highlights the need of public private partnership to respond to the recent cyber security challenges. “IT security is an interesting subject and we can see a growing interest among students to take up these topics. technical and law schools should partner with the government to offer subjects related to cyber security,” he says. The need of the hour for India is to create a cyber security ecosystem, where government agencies, private players including large enterprises and SMBs, students, legal entities, researchers and academicians can actively participate to strengthen the space, says Nayak. But experts also point out that in India cyber security as a subject is still evolving and may take another 2-3 years for the country to build a strong pool of cyber warriors.
