21st Century Schools Being father of two it was a big challenge for me to pick up the school where I can send my children. It is not an easy task to select a school for one’s children these days. There are lot of issues that you need to keep in mind while selecting a school. Is the school good in academics? Does it have a comprehensive system and infrastructure for inculcating interest in extra-curricular activities? Will it take care of the overall development of the child? You also need to take account of whether the school is adopting new techniques of education or is believes in following the traditional systems? The point I am trying to make is that today most Indian parents have to go through lot of stress in finding a school for their children. One major issue is that the good schools have a very limited number of seats, so even if a parent is able to find a school that is most suitable, it is not necessary that he will be able to get his children placed there. School education in India has been drastically transformed during the last few decades. Today parents expect the schools to take care of not only the academic performance of their children, but also their overall development. With the entry of new private schools providing plethora of services to students and multiple curriculums, choosing right school has become really complex and brain storming tasks. This is one issue of digitalLEARNING that I think most parents would appreciate. This issue is all about rating the schools on basis of the most important factors. As you turn the pages, you will find the ranking of some of the key schools located in the country. Mainly we have tried to select and rate the top schools located in six zones - North India, Central India, West India, South India, East India and North-East India. Santosh Panda appointed as new chairman of NCTE Santosh Panda, a faculty in IGNOU has been appointed as the new chairman of Nation Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a regulator for setting quality standards and running of teacher education institutions in the country. The overall objective of the body is to achieve planned and coordinated development of the teacher education system and the regulation and proper maintenance of norms and standards in the teacher education system throughout the country. In all, 11 candidates were shortlisted for the post of which only three made it to the final list. Panda’s name was approved by HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju and cleared by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet.
CBSE to conduct MBBS, BDS exams in MP Against the backdrop of various scams in the Madhya Pradesh Pre-medical Test (MPPMT) examination in 2013, the Director of Medical Education Madhya Pradesh has decided to conduct MBBS and BDS examinations through CBSE and MDS examination through AIIMS instead of Professional Examination Board (Vyapam) next year onwards. The move has come in the light of the scam during the Dental and Medical Admission Test (DMAT) and (MPPMT) in 2013, where many students were found guilty and were disqualified after checking their copies. The disqualified students have already filed cases with the High Court and a decision is awaited. Many more may be found guilty in DMAT and MPPMT scam following the probe being made by the police and medical officials.
IMT Ghaziabad hosts Prahlad Kakar
IMT Ghaziabad organised The Eureka Effect, Tete-a-tete with Prahlad Kakar, an interactive session on Ads, Brands and Creativity by the Ad-guru at its campus. The 2-hour session was aimed at enrichment of knowledge about advertising and branding among students, faculty and members of IMT. Talking about the importance of following one’s passion Prahlad Kakar said, “Young managers begin planning for their lives when they start doing their MBA. What they forget is to ask that what it is in life that makes it worth living. Life is about the value that we create for ourselves.” The event was put together by IMT Ghaziabad’s Marketing Club, “Club MarkUp”. A student-run marketing enterprise, it aims to provide a platform for budding marketing managers at IMT to implement the theoretical constructs learnt in the classroom.

More Indian students take GRE as job prospects fall in homeland
There has been a 70% increase in the number of students from India taking up the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for admission to post graduate studies abroad. The number of candidates from India appearing for GRE increased from 33,504 in 2011-12 to 56,782 in 2012-13. India’s increase is much higher than the China’s 45% or 6% rise in US candidates. India comprise the second largest group of test takers, after the US (3,37,782) with China (42,357) in the third place. Receding job opportunities in the country have prompted students to look overseas. Also there has been an improvement in the US economy; as a result the students are no longer apprehensive to study abroad. They are more positive about getting a job at the end of their studies. US graduate schools are already witnessing a spike in foreign enrollments and with the admissions growing at the fastest pace since 2006, experts say that Indian students have fuelled this increase. In addition, the easier visa norms of US to apply for higher studies have encouraged students to apply for the courses overseas.

Gujarat University saves Rs 70 lakh In the time of soaring prices, the finance committee of Gujarat University (GU) saved Rs 70 lakh by giving tender for supply of answer sheets at lower price. Although the price of paper have gone up by almost 20% as compared to the last year, the finance committee of Gujarat University approved the price for supply of answer sheets, brown stickers and even supplementary cost which is lower than the last year. The GU officials said that the contract for an eight-page supplementary sheet was awarded for Rs 1.50 which was Rs 1.77 last year. Similarly, the brown sticker will now cost the university Rs 0.24 per piece which was costing Rs 0.26 per sticker last year. Interestingly as per the fresh tender, the 26 – page main answer sheet will cost Rs 4.08 per answer sheet which was costing Rs 4.74 last year. An eight member team was formed which awarded the tender to the lowest bidder after verifying the prices.
New veterinary university in Odisha soon In a move to improve the animal husbandry and livestock sector, the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) has proposed Odisha government to open a separate veterinary university in the state. VCI president, Narayan Mohanty has proposed the Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik to set up a separate veterinary university to improve research on various veterinary sciences. Speaking during the three-day Veterinary Pathology Congress-2013, VCI president pointed out that it is the lack of funds and infrastructure in both research and service sectors that are the main reasons for the unsatisfactory growth of veterinary sciences in India. VCI is also contemplating to uniform the syllabus of all the veterinary colleges across India and customize it according to the local needs. The proposal is under active deliberation of the state government.

Job scarcity leaving professional course seats vacant in colleges
Students are giving professional courses a miss this year. It is much evident from the increase in vacant seats in professional courses from 20% in 2011 to a significant 30% in 2013. According to experts, the reason students are letting such courses a go by is that many professional courses are not able to give value for money due to a number of reasons like poor placement policy of the institutes and scarcity of good teachers. An alarming 30% of 1.11 lakh seats in professional courses in engineering, medical, paramedical, MCA and pharmacy colleges remained vacant this year even after three rounds of admission process. One of the major areas of concern is that there are a large number of self financed colleges, especially in the interiors, which have not been able to attract even 10 to 20 students leading to losses worth Rs 2 crore.
NIT to provide free knowledge support to less privileged students The National Institute of Technology (NIT- Adityapur) has started free coaching classes for the under privileged children of the surrounding villages with the aim to provide knowledge support to aspiring engineers from the marginalized community. The Centre for Community Welfare of NIT, as part of the social responsibility program has introduced free coaching classes for the students of Class 8th- Class 12th of the adjoining villages.This is also an effort to prepare these students for entrance examination to various engineering colleges. The scheme inaugurated on Novemebr 1, 2013 will help students from marginalised community to make their headway into the institutes of high repute like NIT. The students of NIT College will be taking up the classes, if required the faculty might join them in the future. Girl students will be highly encouraged to enroll for these classes said the college administration on the inauguration of the scheme. The NIT management and students are gathering lot of appreciation for this initiative to empower the economically backward children and creating a better future for them. digitalLEARNING / December 2013

We Ranked Them
How
R
anking top schools of India is one of the most challenging tasks, given the large size of the ecosystem. To start with, we sent the ranking questionnaire format to more than 10, 000 schools across the country. Schools displayed amazing enthusiasm in the activity and 5, 476 schools sent us the filled-in questionnaire. We also collected available information from the school websites in case of missing information in the submitted questionnaire. We allotted cumulative ranks to the schools and formed a statewise ranking, seggregated in six zones of India - North, Central, South, West, East and North-East.
Schools have been evaluated based on the following indicators School Reputation: Details pertaining to the year of inception, national level awards won by the school in various summits, and the number of students who passed out of the school and are studying in different top level institutes and abroad were considered to evaluate this category. Teachers’ Competency: Under this indicator, we have considered the number of permanent teachers, their qualification, experience, and training programs organised by the school for grading. Academic Excellence: Under this indicator, we evaluated schools based on teacher-student ratio, average class size, academic achievement awards to the students, and co-curricular hours per week/ student. Infrastructure: This being one of the key

parameters in ensuring healthy learning environment. The schools were evaluated on the basis of the campus area, total built-up area, labs, auditorium and the use of ICT in teaching and learning. Students’ Development: In today’s competitive and ever changing world, an overall development of a student can be achieved only if the school acknowledge the importance of skill training programs like life skills, leadership skills, sports, etc along with academics. So, we asked schools to submit details on the number of parent teacher meetings per year, life skills training for students, vocational and other skills, personal counselling for students, career counselling, excursion and outdoor activities, social responsibility, foreign languages taught, facilities for children with special needs,
societies and clubs in the school, student-teacher exchange programmes and alumni database. Sports and Extra Curricular activities: Sports are important for the overall development of children. So, we evaluated schools based on details like extra-curricular hours per week/student, sports infrastructure and the awards and accolades in sports won by the school. Academic Performance: Academic performance for a child is of paramount importance while pursuing higher education, to be able to secure a bright and fulfilling future. The percentage of students acquiring marks above 90 percent between 75-90 percent and less than 75 percent was taken into consideration while evaluating the academic performance of schools.

The group realises that teaching a nursery student today has its impact on the individual and society for the next 50 years. However, keeping in mind the availability of limited financial resources, we devised three models of partnerships to expand the group. The three models include: Infra partner, the school land and building is owned by the individual and is leased to the Indus world Group and the running of the school is undertaken by the group without any interference of the infra partner. The second model is where the group owns the land, the building and is involved in the running of the school. There are three schools which are wholly owned by the group. The third model is the Education Partner where the owner of the school has to have a strong educational background and a willingness to
improvise and improve upon the structure provided by Indus group. The content and manuals and training is provided by the Indus group for an education partner. In addition to the above models, we have an embedded system in all the schools to maintain high quality standards in the schools spread across India. Almost 30 years back when I started my career as a teacher, the attitude towards the whole teaching community was not encouraging. Teachers were not aware, definitely not accomplished and also not open to new learning techniques. With the passage of time, the concept of e-Learning and digitisation has made its mark. The entire process of teaching-learning has become vibrant, interactive as well as an interesting process for both the teachers and students. The students today, have better access to laptops, iPads and eResources which has widened their horizons consider-

Over a period of time, teaching has become quite a challenging and yet a very fulfilling profession. Challenging because children are very open-minded
they know more, they question more. So you have to be a step ahead to be able to address their queries. And teachers will slowly but steadily have to unlearn what they have learned over a period of time and relearn what the need of the hour is. What are the major initiatives the schools has taken during your tenure? I believe in strong academic inputs, I have been able to bring up the school results. We are trying to match the bench marks in the world. We have had world toppers in Mathematics, last two years we have had national toppers in Economics. I firmly believe that not every child is out there to be an academic achiever, so we need to channelise the energies of children and give them a sense of accomplishment through some other means. My full initiative is to give a holistic education, so I lay a lot of emphasis on co-curricular activities; I refuse to treat them as ‘Extra’ curricular activities. It is something like a hidden curriculum, things like values and team-work, collaborative learning, co-operation which can only happen through these activities and of course working on the self esteem of the children. I have been trying to promote the spirit of International mindedness, which I have done through the ISA (International School Award) Program and I am proud to share that we were recently conferred with the international school award by the British Council. I feel that every child should actually experience the true spirit of International mindedness.

Possibly the biggest challenge being faced by us at Daly College is the pressure for admissions that we are unfortunately unable to meet. Would you like to comment on Supreme Court guidelines on ragging? The Supreme Court had ruled that schools must take firm action against cases of ragging. But, at the same time, the Parliament has ruled that a school cannot take any mental or physical action against any student nor can they suspend or expel them. It is indeed tough for school authorities at times to deal with such cases on campus and punish the students in case they violate the guidelines. How has education sector evolved over past last five years? The school education is not healthy. With all good intentions to provide free and compulsory education, the government has enacted a law which will defi-

What are the new initiatives undertaken in your school? Our school believes in student initiatives and student leadership. There are any number of innovations taking place on a regular basis. These include building

Nearly 30 teachers travel abroad every year. Please share your experience as an administrator. As an administrator, I realise that the major challenge is to keep up with all the suggestions and resultant changes that occur owing to student and staff initiatives. Would you like to comment on the impact of RTE on school education? Parliament has now stopped us from conducting entrance tests and therefore the very basis of our existence has been challenged. Admissions these days are merely based on lottery. Merit is no longer a key factor in granting admission to a student. This practice will obviously lead to degradadtion of quality of education in the long run.

Please share your views on changing face of education system The education sector in India is going through exciting times over past five years. As estimated, 47 million children need to get basic education by 2020. Education over the last five years can be termed as a transition phase as India has seen a mushrooming of new educational institutions, backed by resources from industrial houses, jostling for their share and recognition. We have the pre-independence schools that had a head start, and rightly can claim to be pioneers in quality value based education. Fortunately, there is space for the old and the new to co-exist and network together contributing to nation building through education. How can we prepare students for future? We have no choice but to move from the old to the new, the demarcating year 1989, that is, pre and post the impacting ‘world wide web’ but there is optimism as always in human capacity to adapt and change, the young are more comfortable with this phenomena, but it was the pre-1989 generation that created the computer, so there is no reason why the challenge of digital age in education should cause a murmur in hearts of senior and older teachers. Earlier education given by schools lasted a life time, but today what is valid this year, may be out dated next year. So, the greatest challenge is to prepare our students for tomorrow that we haven’t seen, a tomorrow that will be so different from today, and nothing like yesterday.

What are the new initiatives undertaken by your school? In our school, all the class rooms are digital class rooms. We have collaborated with NIIT and Educomp. Besides this, we have three computer labs with Wi Fi connectivity. All teachers are given training to more techno-savvy to use all the modern gazettes, multimedia, power point presentation interactive boards etc while teaching in the class. Our school has the english language lab where student can correct there pronunciation and complete their assignment online. We also have introduced robotic lab in our school. What are the factors associated with the changing paradigm of education system of the country.? The advent of television has set the change of education system in India. It has not only initiated use of technology for spreading education but also sown the seeds of distraction among the students. Gradually technology in the form of Google, Facebook and education software has become a dominant factor in changing the education pattern in India. In the present scenario the tools of technology have positive influence and negative influences. The chalk and talk method, slowly was supported by tools of technology, such as over head projectors, smart boards and now it is the ‘age of digital learning’. From being instructors, teachers have gradually become facilitators. The liberalisation of economy also had an indirect impact on education system because of globalisation. The practices of western world and the use of technology have been accepted in India. The computer revolution in the world has led to more opportunities in software sector. Services came into limelight and students started opting for different options. Earlier maximum emphasis was laid on Engineering and MEdical courses. The Education system was forced to open up according to these new demands of jobs. Are we striking the right balance between quality and quantity in schools? Over the years, education system has become commercialised as Government

has failed to deliver the required results. The demand for education has caught the attention of many existing entrepreneurs and also new budding entrepreneurs. This has led to mushrooming of new schools everywhere in India and the short supply of teachers was bound to happen. Not only there is short supply of teachers but acute short supply of ‘quality’ teachers. Today, unless the school is located in a vast area, proper teaching in a natural set up is not possible. Class Education over Value Based With the aim of providing world class education to each student, this 125 year old school still believes in the traditional value addition system among the students. Changes in the school department were dramatic. There was a steady increase in the number of day scholars. There had always been a scattering of English, French and German boys, now students from China, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand and Burma started arriving. In 1954, 28 nationalities could be found in the college, including the staff. At present, the school has 500 boarders, 700 day scholars and 81 teaching staff. The school celebrated 125 years of its existence in 2013 and Pranab Mukherjee, President of India inaugurated the Jubilee celebrations on November 10, 2013. What changes do you envision in the school education system in India? These days education has become nothing but pure business for many. Schools are keen on world class education not value based one. But some schools still care about enlightening students with knowledge and values both. With several boards coming up, say, foreign boards and many different Indian boards, children have got brilliant options to choose from.
Please share the experience of St Joseph’s School’s journey of 125 years Established on February 13, 1888 at Sunnybank in Darjeeling town, we started functioning with 18 boarders and seven day scholars. In 1899, the student body consisted of 193 boys. By 1947, the year of Independence, the number reached 422, including 93 college students.
What is the best way to adapt to technological advancements? We encourage children to do lots of practical work as I believe the more they practice it, the more tech-friendly they will become. What are your views on current value education system in schools? I think until and unless it is practiced,
it has no value at all. During the winter vacations, we open the school for the poor children. We host several courses on spoken English courses, Mathematics, Computers, extra-curricular or cocurricular activities. We arrange free lunch for them. We believe that by introducing value education books in the school, we cannot solve the ‘moral education’ problem. That is why we give our students an example by serving the society in any way possible. As far as co-curricular or extracurricular activities are concerned, I have noticed that our students have amazing talent in almost every field like music, singing, dancing, acting etc. But academics still needs a little push from the parents’ side. Last year, we had organised a workshop for parenting. We brought people from outside to conduct it which became a huge success. Recently, when I went to conduct a workshop at a school, parents who were present complained that the teachers are kept changing frequently. I asked, “how many of you want your children to be teachers?” Not a single one replied in affirmative. It’s unfortunate that most people opt for this profession not because of their passion for this but because they have no other decent option left. Nowadays more and more teachers are looking for money through tuitions, some of them actually left the institution mainly because they were not allowed to take tuitions. But exceptions are always there, as I have met many who were inspired by their own teachers and wanted to be like them.

hough the country boasts of producing the maximum number of engineering talent in the world, only 1 percent of Indian IT students have been found skilled in the information security space. According to a study done by ECCouncil, a global certification body for information security professionals, nearly 86% of student IT talent pool in India displays no awareness of cyber security basics; while a mere 13% was found to be trainable in the space. “This is very alarming news to the country’s corporate and defence establishments. India is known as the software and outsourcing capital of the world. However, recent industry data shows how vulnerable the Indian IT industry is. Lack of skills in both working professionals as well as students is a major area of concern for the nation,” says Amit kumar, president and co-founder, cyberfort . India declared its first national cyber security policy in July this year, which aims to create 5 lakh information security professionals over next five years. “Given the fact the 86% of the current IT talent has no awareness of cyber security, the role of academia becomes all the more challenging,” says Amit.
In a recent move to up the ante on cyber security, the government has hired 4,446 experts. However, the number is miniscule compared to the increasing number of attacks on websites every month. Financial institutions, telecom, mobility, internet organisations and hospitals are more vulnerable to cyber threats today, because of the data they handle. According to reports by CERT-In, 4,191 Indian websites were hacked in the month of August this year, up from 1,808 in May this year. In fact, corporates too agree that they have a tough time filling up positions in the information security space. “It is difficult to find basic engineering talent, let alone talent in information security space. The problem is not with students, but the whole system. You can’t expect them to be good at something they are not taught,” says the CFO of an IT company who did not wish to be named. “The world is recognising vulnerabilities, leading to cyber threats and attacks. India holds a key position in the global IT and IT-enabled services map. Every country is taking steps towards building a talent pipeline towards a secure future and we urge Indian industry and academia to address the concerns to retain their leadership in the domain,” Dr Rajesh kumar VP cyberfort said.

Just around 13percent of students have an understanding of concepts and can be trained in information security. More than 86 percent have not been made aware of skills or are not trainable. The world may acknowledge India as an information technology superpower, but its very own official cyber security workforce comprises mere 556 experts deployed in various government agencies.
Security Architecture Now, India is also setting up its own ‘cyber security architecture’ that will comprise the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) for threat assessment and information sharing among stakeholders, the Cyber Operation Centre that will be jointly run by the NTRO and the armed forces for threat management and mitigation for identified critical sectors and defence, and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) under the NTRO for providing cover to ‘critical information infrastructure’. The government is also coming up with a legal framework to deal with cyber security. The NSCS has identified over a dozen ‘critical information infrastructure’ sectors/ facilities requiring protection. These include the civil aviation sector (Air Traffic Control or ATC), Railways’ passenger reservation system and communication network, port management, companies and organisations in power, oil and natural gas sectors, banking and finance, and telecom sectors. The government of India along with private organizations is launching several initiatives to combat cyber attacks. However, the biggest challenge currently

Debasis Nayak, CIO, Asian School Of Cyber Laws believes there are ample opportunities in the cyber security space. He also highlights the need of public private partnership to respond to the recent cyber security challenges. “IT security is an interesting subject and we can see a growing interest among students to take up these topics. technical and law schools should partner with the government to offer subjects related to cyber security,” he says. The need of the hour for India is to create a cyber security ecosystem, where government agencies, private players including large enterprises and SMBs, students, legal entities, researchers and academicians can actively participate to strengthen the space, says Nayak. But experts also point out that in India cyber security as a subject is still evolving and may take another 2-3 years for the country to build a strong pool of cyber warriors.
