EDUCATION FOR A BETTER WORLD
The IB continuum of international education for 3-19 year olds is unique because of its academic and personal rigour. We challenge students to excel in their studies and in their personal growth. We aim to inspire a quest for learning throughout life that is marked by enthusiasm and empathy. The IB aspires to help schools develop well-rounded students with character: students who can respond to challenges with optimism and an open-mind; students confident in their own identities; students who make ethical decisions; students who join with others in celebrating our common humanity; students who are prepared to apply what they learn in real world, complex and unpredictable situations.
The PYP prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child.
Research suggests many benefits to choosing the DP. The programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.
A challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, the MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.
The CP is a framework of international education addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. It leads to higher education apprenticeships or employment.

Is Indian Education Sector Ready for Industrial Revolution 4.0? As the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is all set to occur in a big way soon, the education sector may experience its influence in a major way. With modernday technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and others expected to play a major role, how does our education industry perceive this dawn of a new era? explore Sandeep Datta and Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN).

t’s likely that today not many of us may bother to visualise the probable impact of Industrial Revolution 4.0 which will involve a combination of innovative practices and approaches. It could be anything in terms of processes, services, applications or products. But it will certainly transform education ecosystem in a major way. What is immediately obvious here is that due to Industrial Revolution 4.0 the employees of the future will need to use their knowledge and skills in new ways and keep upgrading and improving their knowledge to be successful. It may mean employers will prefer employees who are able to apply a series of skills and attributes with ease. Implicit in this approach is the fact that knowledge will be constantly changing. To meet these requirements it is incumbent on educational institutions to adjust their curricula accordingly. With the arrival of Industrial Revolution 4.0, it is possible the technologies powered by AI will supersede everything else as they are so much capable of transforming

WHAT IS INDUSTRY 4.0?
When computers were introduced in Industry 3.0, it was called disruptive, thanks to the addition of an entirely new technology. Now, and into the future as Industry 4.0 unfolds, computers are connected and communicate with one another to ultimately make decisions without human involvement. A combination of cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things and the Internet of Systems make Industry 4.0 possible and the smart factory a reality. As a result of the support of smart machines that keep getting smarter as they get access to more data, our factories will become more efficient and productive and less wasteful. Ultimately, it’s the network of these machines that are digitally connected with one another and create and share information that results in the true power of Industry 4.0.
TEACHING IN THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (TEACHING 4.0)
Having a 100% digital education is not an all-inclusive solution, nor should it be the only method of teaching in use. However, benefitting from ‘hybrid education’ can only happen if teachers’ digital skills are encouraged and implemented through experimental collaborations and partnerships with tech industries. With a spike in educational technology solutions, professionals can help transform school environments to become hybrid learning communities, where teachers can truly embrace innovations, become digitally literate and assume their role as facilitators.

the present world or that of the third industrial revolution where information technology was the key driver. Some believe in the new scenario in future, the skills required will be critical thinking, people management, emotional intelligence, critical judgement, negotiation, cognitive flexibility, as well as knowledge production and management. Let’s look at how does a section of top industry experts and edupreneurs look at this enigma called — Industrial Revolution 4.0. Some of the experts feel Machine Learning is the way ahead, where computers will automatically learn and re-programme themselves as per the need, without human inputs. It’s both an exciting and challenging aspect for students and teachers. Industry 4.0 demands major skill sets in educationists for understanding the future needs and showing the futuristic vision to students. That itself is the foreseeable challenge. Then comes the challenge of preparing students for an unknown and unseen fast changing future. Dr Manjula Pooja Shroff, MD & CEO, Kalorex Group, says the revolution has already started, Industry 4.0 has kicked off the thought process for Education 4.0 as well. “The industry demands will push education to raise its standards. Skill development and sustainability has to be the focus of the curriculum in the near future.” Explaining how will STEAM learning foster innovation into the global education ecosystem in the Industry Revolution 4.0, Dr Shroff says: “Big Data processing and coding will be an integral part of all school subjects. The way forward is to introduce it at the earliest with an interdisciplinary

approach towards teaching all subjects with focus on applicability. With the high level of machine integration into our lives, while Science and Math will be required to support this technological drive, the element of Art and Humanities will be necessary to strike a balance between Humans and Machines.” According to Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman, Seth M.R. Jaipuria Schools & Jaipuria Institute of Management, the future of school is human, not institutional. “The concept of industrial scale dominates how we think about and do school. I don’t buy it; I want school to be human scale. I argue for smaller learning spaces of close to 150 students or less where we can invest in students teaching each other. This is the future, and this is where technology will change the game.” Mentioning about the aspects that Automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) may influence in the education sector, he says: “We are very bullish about technology, and see AI as the next-bigthing. We have set up AI and VR labs at our schools already. We do hope the future of school can break through the barriers we put up between ourselves and others, and the barriers between ourselves and knowledge we’ve yet to attain.” Raghav Podar, Chairman, Podar World School, opines today children are growing up in an age of VR, AR and AI. They will be auto prompted with the information they will require to achieve their next tasks. “The education system needs to dramatically transform from one where memory retention and regurgitation is assessed, to a system where the ability of the child to effectively apply the knowledge that he has, is valued.” Ryan Pinto, CEO, Ryan International Group of Institutions, believes one of the biggest challenges is to find solutions beyond the textbooks. “It’s time for educators to part ways with the old ‘lesson delivery model’ and shift more towards an adaptive model which leads to a more customised teaching-learning processes which is driven by students themselves. Additionally, students will ‘learn by exploring /doing’ especially for STEM subjects.” “Second challenge is in creating a teaching community (and beyond that an ecosystem) which can help the young generation get ready for the future. With the rapid adoption of technology we need to equip our teachers to become facilitators who can leverage the new tools to enhance learning outcomes,” he adds.
DECEMBER 2018
Industrial Revolution 4.0 is a multifarious, dialectical and exhilarating prospect which can potentially alter and revolutionise the education sector across the globe for the better. The fourth industrial revolution is powered by artificial intelligence and it will transform education from tasks-based characteristics to human centric characteristics, states Anirudh Gupta, CEO, DCM Group of Schools. “Because of the convergence of man and machine, it will reduce the subject distance between humanities and social sciences as well as science and technology. This will necessarily require much more interdisciplinary teaching, research and innovation,” he says. K Lakshmi Rao, Academic Director, JGI Schools, opines the Industrial Revolution 4.0 certainly would revolutionise the education sector, as Automation which is the most important feature of Industrial Revolution4.0, is going to impact the career options as early as 2020. “There will be more than 20% new job opportunities that emerge, some of them being: Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, 3D printing, Digital marketing, Cyber Security Specialists so on and so forth. These careers were not heard by most of the 19th Century and 20th Century educators. Hence, there is a dire need for quick change in the education sector with a curriculum revamping from Elementary Education to Higher Education. Talking about challenges in education sector in near future due to Industrial Revolution 4.0, Rao says: “The major challenges I foresee in the education sector is the lack of adaptability skill of educators along with apprehension. The present educators are following 19th Century systems and teaching 21st Century digital natives as they feel that the Education system that they had under gone is still good to make a good living.” In essence, the future will belong to the ones who are ready to accept change and adapt technology like new rules of the game. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 in education domain will be a beginning of new era making all of us look at learning and exploring things a distinct way. Let’s be ready, as the change is the ultimate reality of life.

IS MBA STILL A SOUGHT AFTER COURSE? Even if a huge number of management schools have opened in different parts of the country, MBA continues to charm a lot of youngsters who join it despite not being business graduates. For many, it is a ladder of success. But is MBA still as much fascinating as it once used to be a decade ago? finds out Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN).
“
But, nowadays, with industries transforming at a rapid rate, it is important to figure out that is there any scope left for MBA graduates.

O
ther than the graduates from top 20 B-Schools of India, only seven percent Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from Indian business schools got jobs immediately after the completion of the course, according to an ASSOCHAM report. Similarly, in 2016-17, more than half of MBA graduates could not get hired in campus placements, says the data by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) shows. The above data is sufficient enough for students to determine whether pursue an MBA/other business courses or not. Moreover, the present economical conditions and job crunch across the globe is also a big reason of worry for students to check if investing a huge amount in MBA is still beneficial or not?
Economic liberalisation in 1991 in India started unshackling the private sector leading to a growth in demand for business managers. Companies were willing to pay a handsome amount to this new breed of executives who seemed capable of putting family-held or other traditional businesses on fast track. MBA became a sought after career among the youth. But, nowadays, with industries transforming at a rapid rate, it is important to figure out that is there any scope left for MBA graduates in coming years or a new course aligned with the latest industry-trends is needed. It has become fashionable of late to cast doubt on the merits of getting an MBA degree, especially one from a two-year programme that costs well into the six figures. Yet, there has been no shortage of

being well linked with industry offers such set of skills to every candidate pursuing them.
Specialisation There is an increased specialisation of careers in the service sector. This has led to emergence of specialised subjects in which students can pursue courses in business administration/ management. Through subjects such as finance or marketing, candidates will not only learn the basics of business, but also be able to create a niche for themselves. Students can look for the availability of a course as per their interest in best B-schools of India online or through appearing for their entrance exams, if any.
Better Pay and Scope for Promotions Pursuing a course such as MBA, PGDM or PGPM may change the direction of one’s career. It is an added academic achievement, which may increase the likelihood of getting a raise and promotion. It may also open up opportunities for jobs that one was not eligible for before because of its orientation towards leadership and teambuilding.
Entrepreneurship Skills
As per the survey, desire to acquire new skills and knowledge about business was at the top of the list, cited by 57 percent of the prospective students. Second on the list, cited by 49% of the respondents, was access to job prospects, including the opportunity to transition into a new career, with the degree. Not far behind was access to a strong network and the opportunity to advance a career within the same industry (both checked off by 48% of the sample). In addition to that the business courses across the globe have some unique features which make it one of the most sought after programmes in higher education.
Unique Knowledge Cut-throat competition is a reality and to lead others in this competition, it is necessary that a candidate has unique set of skills and knowledge in his/her respective domain. Business courses

Startup India and other initiatives have made the Indian economy conducive to the establishment and growth of businesses. The curriculum of a business courses inculcates the capability of differentiating between a good and bad business strategy. Candidates will learn how to give their business a global outreach, how to adopt techniques to attract external funding, and how to hire the best minds in the job market. Having an MBA on CV may translate into job security because one will still be able to find a job even if your business does not perform favourably. Emerging economies are proving to be fertile ground for MBA graduates, because it is easier to navigate unstructured markets with a structured mind. Companies are constantly looking to expand in such economies, and they need professionals trained in business and management to give direction to their growth. The increase in domestic and foreign demand coupled with expansion in finance, real estate, education and investments are expected to cause a surge in India’s growth story, and a business degree is best designed to take advantage of it.

applicants to any of the most highly selective schools that routinely reject the vast majority of candidates who apply to them. So what are the key reasons that influence people to still dream of having an MBA degree? The Association of International Graduate Admissions Consultants (AIGAC) released its annual survey on MBA/business courses applicants who had quite a bit to say about this question. 1,377 candidates who have recently applied to at least one business school responded to the web-based survey. Majority of the people think that top reason for a student to pursue an MBA is good salary and a good position in an organisation. RGUKT: Catering to the Educational Needs of Rural Youth Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), Basar in Telangana State has been giving wings to the dreams of the gifted rural youth by catering to the educational needs. Sudheer Goutham of Elets News Network finds how the RGUKT, Basar nestled in the hinterlands of the State of Telangana, stands as an example to be emulated in how to take quality higher education to those who cannot afford it, but who wish to receive it.
R
ajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) was established in 2008 as a full-fledged University in the then united Andhra Pradesh by a special act of Legislature. Subsequent to the bifurcation of the State, the new Government of Telangana adopted the lone campus in Telangana state at Basar as a stand-alone University. The University has a unique 6-year integrated programme under which the top 1% of the rural students are admitted into the University after their X class. They complete their PUC and then move into a 4-year B Tech programme. The University takes 1,000 students every year into the 6-year programme. Since the academic year 2018-19, the intake has been hiked to 1,500 students.
Ahead of the Curve RGUKT, Basar, is located in pristine rural surroundings in the holy temple-town of Basar. The campus is sprawled over a vast 275-acre that houses close to 7,500 people at any point of time including students, faculty and support staff. The University offers a conventional 2-year PUC program followed by a 4-year B Tech degree program in seven branches of engineering – Chemical, Computer Sciences, Electronics and Communications, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, and Metallurgical and Materials. Academic pedagogy is highly ICT intensive and carefully crafted with a judicious mix of mentoring, teaching and a unique “learning-by-doing” methodology where the students bolster their learning capacity at their own pace and time.

HITS: Explore Once in a lifetime Opportunities
W
hen most of the people give up on big dreams just because they were born in a middle-class family, there are some who rise over such notions and create their own destiny. One such person was late Dr K C G Verghese, who through his hard work and perseverance evolved as one of the top-ranking educationists in the country. Founder of the Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI), Verghese ventured into the education sector in 1966 after realising the need for an institution that offers non-formal technical education. He envisioned a country, which will be devoid of poverty and immense scope for employment. Today, Hindustan Group of Institutes (HGI) is a renowned name to impart quality education in the fields of Engineering, Aviation, Applied Sciences, and Management. Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science (HITS) under the umbrella of HGI was established in 1985. It was earlier known as Hindustan College of Engineering. The institute was conferred University Status by University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2008. Higher Education – Insights
Is Higher Education preparing youth rightly for challenges ahead? Internal reformulations, regulations, reformations are necessary in higher education, as the later has the crucial role in introducing change and progress in society and is also considered a key agent in educating new generations to build the future, writes Dr Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor, Chitkara University, Punjab, for Elets News Network (ENN).

he renowned scientist Albert Einstein once said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” Therefore, we must explore newer vistas and ways to learn - nothing short to view the world - in a creative way. Historically, the objective of education was to create good citizens and it still is, but recently, it got supplemented with the desire to awakening of critical spirit. Today, innovation and creativity is a key element to assess whether an education system is good or not. Universities must continue their mission to educate, train and carry out innovation and research by providing a conducive environment to its stakeholders. At Chitkara University, we stand tall with 70 start-ups and 160 (filed) patents, because we believe and train our people to innovate and contribute significantly for nation building. our belief and commitment in producing globally responsible professionals. It also gives us an opportunity to continuously weigh ourselves against global benchmarks. This is a world of interdisciplinary approach – Why should an engineering student be taught only how to make airplanes, Why can’t a mass-comm student fly drones, and why can’t a hotel management student repair his own microwave oven. It is also about skilling and making. We must be adequately diverse in our approach to education, yet giving the depth at the right time to the right candidate. The basic premise of this approach is to bring sense of responsibility and accountability towards all disciplines and trades amongst student and faculty. Diversity is the key driver in the effort. We must evolve new teaching-learning approaches and propose newer models of education, where creative thinking can be integrated inclusively. The new education models should be driven by newer challenges of integrating required competencies and yet giving room for exceptions. Thus, it should be a system that can transform its takers form confused rockets to guided missiles: rockets capable of changing direction in flight, adjusting to flexible circumstances, and continually course-correcting. Teaching and learning must be more active, connected to real life, and designed with students and their unique qualities in mind. The role of higher education is critical and paramount in this makeover and the strategies and implementation needs to be more dynamic than ever. We at Chitkara University have syllabuses in place for different courses but curriculum comes from Industry. Our curriculums are latest (in terms of present requirements of Industry and society) and challenging (in terms of future requirements of industry and society). “What Industry requires” is our “Curriculum”. This has changed the entire teaching-learning process. We need to act – and the time is now – because in the Higher Education, what we build today, becomes the future. he economic success of any nation largely depends on the quality of education provided by its educational institutions. This is even more pertinent for India, where more than 50 percent of its 1.36 billion citizens are under the age of 25 and 65 percent are under 35 years of age. Consequently, this makes India’s higher education system the third largest in the world (in terms of number of students). The problem is that we as a nation are not effectively able to utilise such a large pool of prospective employees and assimilate them into the workforce. Of the educated citizens of India, a mere 45 percent are employable. While this statistic represents a big jump from the 33 percent employability five years ago, the situation still remains concerning. These abysmal numbers do not come across as a surprise because the disparity can be seen clearly when we look at the demand and supply gap in the higher education system of India. With
the largest population in the world between the age bracket of 5 to 25, India requires hundredthousands of universities, schools and colleges to reach out to the dynamic talent pool it has. The next gap comes to fore when we see that quality education, especially at the higher level is limited only to a few institutes such as IITs, IIMs and some others. The conversion rate for IIMs itself is very low as only 1 out of 150 applicants manage to get admission there. This fact is partially due to the smaller number of seats available for candidates in the premier institutes of our nation. But the situation is not that bleak all around, for one, around 75 percent of global STEM graduates will be concentrated in BRICS nations by 2030. Another development to be optimistic about in recent years is the rise of online education in India, with its market value standing at $247 Million, as of 2016 with 1.57 Million users. The more traditional and rigid teaching models are now being replaced by adaptive and personalised

1,000 executives from private and public sector have been trained using the digital learning platform in last one year. Similarly, long duration programmes for sports professionals and working executives have been the key initiatives of the institute. All the programmes are devised to be delivered on ‘Interactive Online Learning Platform (IOL)’. The unique IOL provides a live, interactive ‘Direct to Desktop/Device’ capability where participants in any part of the country can listen and discuss questions directly with IIM Rohtak faculty members, cutting across geographical constraints. “Great institutions are faculty led, administrative supported, and technology enabled. Therefore, one must provide facilitative environment for academic research, offer a caring and keen administration, and provide cutting edge technology in any institution for it to achieve greater success,” said Prof Dheeraj Sharma, Director, IIM Rohtak. India today stands at the crossroads where it can either become the growth engine of the world, leveraging its demographic dividend, or lose out on the opportunity. The level of excellence in higher education will be a key factor in determining the role that India will play, globally, in the immediate future. Technical education in Madhya Pradesh
Technical Education in Madhya Pradesh: Challenges and Solutions In line with the industries’ requirement, educational institutes in Madhya Pradesh are imparting skill-based higher education. How the education sector in the State is handling various challenges and imparting quality education? Explores Dr Upinder Dhar, Vice Chancellor, Shri Vaishnav Vidyapeeth Vishwavidyalaya, Indore for Elets News Network (ENN). The availability of job-oriented quality education ensures an increase in the working capability, productivity and employability of the students. Madhya Pradesh is one of the fastest growing States in the country with a growth rate of more than 10 percent. To sustain and enhance the present growth rate, it is necessary that available human resource is technically trained as per demand in the global market. It is well known that the role of trained, skilled and productive human resource in technical sector is paramount for overall economic development.
Need for Integrated Development The State Government has played the key role in ensuring the availability of ever-increasing demand for skilled human resource in the State and the country. As a result of this, it has been made possible to set up around 1,350 Technical Training Institutes with an intake capacity of about 2,59,000, and the State has emerged as an important educational hub in the technical education and vocational training. The offerings of various types of institutions include programmes in engineering,

architecture, computer applications, business administration, pharmacy, polytechnic, hotel management, catering technology, industrial training and skill development. In recent years, the development of technical and vocational education took place at a fast pace. However, as per available data, the State is still behind the national average of available seats per lakh population in any discipline. As per data of the Ministry of Labour, the State stands at 11th position in the country on the total number of seats available in the government and private ITIs. The short-term training programmes are in great demand in the State. Currently, there are only 135 skill development and vocational training centres offering short-term programmes. This

education at par with the global standard To provide training opportunities along with appropriate employment to every needful youth • To invite institutions and universities of national as well as international repute to establish centres in Madhya Pradesh • To forecast need for technically trained human resource on regular intervals based on skill mapping and skill gap analysis • Start new programmes as well as revise existing ones to bridge the gap • To develop certification mechanism for the informally trained people • To expand training facilities through an alternative framework with the inclusion of private education and training providers • To provide programmes in digital format for distance education and online system of education. Tours should be conducted for the students of senior secondary schools to technical education institutions with the objective of enhancing their awareness and interest in technical programs so that more students are motivated to work in the field based on technical skills without any gender bias. State and district-level guidancecum-employment fairs should also be organised for the promotion of technical education. The State should also ensure a transparent and fast system through the use of information technology, and encourage the institutions to obtain accreditation as per national and international standards. Further, the State should encourage greater private participation and innovation in the management of government institutions. (Disclaimer: Views expressed are a personal opinion). •

has also been repeatedly emphasised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to take action on imparting good quality technical and vocational education in the State. It will help the youth of Madhya Pradesh to grab the opportunities arising on account of economic development. In the opinion of several national level industrial organisations, the human resource currently being trained by the technical educational institutions is not as per the demand of the market and industry, and the quality is also not of expected level. There are still several trades for which there is a high demand for skilled human resource. However, neither the institutions have the vision and required capacity to train as per demand nor the programmes available are as per requirement. Although there has been a sharp increase in the technical educational institutions offering graduate and postgraduate programs in the State, the number of institutions and programmes, availability of seats and intake capacity at the Polytechnic and ITI level has not increased in the same proportion. Thus, there is a need for a policy that promotes a balanced and integrated development of technical education at various levels.

ELV: Enabling Students to Preschool Perspective
Succeed Globally in Future At Early Learning Village (ELV), we understand that development in a child’s early years is crucial for lifelong well-being and success, says Pradeep Jolly, Co-Founder, Early Learning Village & Wonderland, in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN). How does Early Learning Village help its students to grow and develop while reading, listening and playing? Our team of internationally experienced educators work closely with students to ensure that the time spent at Early Learning Village (ELV) is enjoyable and enriching. The International Early Years (IEY) Curriculum underpins all learning at our preschool. It is a comprehensive curriculum focused explicitly on the developmental needs of young children. The globally accredited IEY curriculum clearly defines learning and development goals and helps your child to be internationally minded. Children use childfriendly cameras, bee-bots, learning apps and voice recorders to develop skills in technology at ELV preschool.
Infrastructure wise, what facilities are provided at early learning village to make the learning delightful for students, yet keeping them safe? Children learn in an environment that provides stimulating spaces and exciting experiences. A child’s day at Early Learning Village has a balance of open-ended activities, exploration, child-initiated play supported by adults, focused-learning with adult guiding, and learning through playful and rich experiential activities. Our outdoor activities provide children with a range of engaging and challenging opportunities to explore freely, develop physically, and solve problems while playing independently and collaboratively. All the activities are on the lines of international practices. Focusing on the idea that every child learns in a healthy and safe environment, we ensure learning spaces both indoor and outdoor are designed to involve our students.
How various programmes at Early Learning Village help the students to develop holistically? All our programmes have been purposefully designed to support
32

every child’s educational needs. The Adult and Child Programme allows parents to be present while their children learns in an informal educational setting. Our Early Year programmes for students aged 2-4 allow them to learn at their own pace, discover areas of their interest and be creative. Expressive arts and creativity are an important part of the ELV curriculum. Our play space is a safe, rich and dynamic environment to grow confidence, take risks and solve problems while playing independently and collaboratively.
How the curriculum helps the preschool students face real-life challenges? Learning happens when a child’s natural curiosity is enabled in a safe environment. Independent earning experiences create a context for personal development and are the foundation of nurturing global citizens. Our curriculum involves ongoing assessment in the form of evaluation and reflection of the activities. Outdoor play opens up a vast universe of learning for children which, in return, helps in developing skills like critical thinking, problem-solving and crisis management.
How do you see the road ahead for the Early Learning Village? We are currently focused on being consistent with our care and quality measures while making sure that we create a beautiful closed community of parents. We aim to touch the lives of more children, ensuring that we continue to create a positive impact in their growth and learning.

Industrial Revolution 4.0 is much talked about term nowadays, how important is the skill and training for students? Researches reveal that the graduates lack the fundamental skills required by businesses. Further, formal training of employees in basic business frameworks and concepts is relatively missing. It is imperative that we demystify the gap. The missing threads are confidence building, application of concept into practice and the efforts from the institutes to fulfil the requisites for helping students to sustain in this dynamic and volatile job market.

We started working on our portal only after we have done our due diligence, and post extensive consultations with eminent teachers, educationists, principals and parents. On a higher level, we segregated our content into 3 grade categories [Grade 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12]. This we have done keeping in mind that the language and comprehension capabilities differ across age levels, and one size doesn’t fit all. At a granular level, we have divided the content into various interesting domains. For example, to make students understand Science better, we present situations and events with proper explanation of the concept behind it. Similarly, under the technology section, the latest Technological breakthroughs across the world are presented before the children in a lucid language.
What is the vision and mission of The Ultimate Knowledge for the future? Our mission is to ensure that the perfect blend of information and knowledge is imparted to students. We see ourselves as a perfect ally of all educational institutions whose aim is to create awareness among children. We would be the go-to portal for students to get an all-round and holistic knowledge. Our vision is to help the society by creating a heightened level of awareness among the youth to face future challenges with their knowledge and capabilities. India enjoys a prestigious global presence, and our students need to be well-equipped to make the most of the opportunities looming large on the horizon.

It helps them to remain updated and competent as per the global scenario. We are also looking forward for few student exchange programmes.

Teaching methodologies like E-Learning, hands-on activities, debates, seminars, group discussions, and Mentor-Mentee system etc, make the learning more object-oriented and skill specific. On one hand, it helps slow learners to cope up with the challenges and on the other hand, it moulds gifted learners into curious ones. A range of activities like seminars, fieldtrips, inter and intra school competitions in school help students to identify their core competencies. Student Clubs and House System enable them to sharpen their leadership skills along with being holistic.
What challenges were faced by the school initially and steps undertaken to resolve them? The educational scenario at Seoni, (Madhya Pradesh) is very conventional. The awareness among public was not as expected by us. It was a challenge to run a premium school at such a conventional place. After resolving the initial challenges, we made a mark as one of its kind school in nearby districts. We adopted unique practices like -- No homework, No copy paste projects, Apple I-pad education, extra attention on slow learners, individual attention, along with several outdoor/indoor sports and extra-curricular activities. We believe in spreading our vision with leaders and educationists and get good exposure which in turn will motivate our team to do its best in future and contribute to the field of education.

Nurturing Thinkers and School Perspective
Innovators Through Education We strive for maintaining quality and thus achieving excellence by preparing students for learning beyond their school years and assisting them to become lifelong learners, say Sandeep Goenka and Archana Goenka, Founder Trustees, C P Goenka International Schools, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). To manage with the rapidly evolving world, students must be responsive to change and receptive to new ideas, how does C P Goenka International School maintain such environment for its students? At C P Goenka International School, we have created an environment that exposes students to different cultures, value systems and practices in different ways like student exchange programmes, model United Nation sessions, interactive learning activities, debates, and research projects etc. This enables them to understand different perspectives. Such activities encourage students to appreciate cultural diversity. This helps them to accept the change positively.
What are the best practices followed by the school in its curriculum to nurture lifelong learners? The curriculum is planned in such a way that creativity, collaboration, learning by doing, online and differentiated learning, self-regulation and problem solving are regularly undertaken through projects that focus on solving real-life problems. Students’ confidence and selfesteem are fostered through activities like MDM (My Delightful Moment) where students showcase their unique talents, debates, quiz, street plays, elocution, etc. The curriculum also incorporates differentiated learning strategies to nurture students’ strengths, integrate multiple intelligence-based activities, flipped classrooms and the right use of technology etc, to develop skills and create the most competent learners and citizens.
How growing use of technology in education sector is improving the teaching-learning practices, assessment methodologies and improving the learning outcomes?
Sandeep Goenka and Archana Goenka
Founder Trustees, C P Goenka International Schools
What measures are adopted by the school for active engagement of parents along with teachers for holistic learning amongst its students? Parents play a fundamental role in the development of our school and students. The active collaboration of the student-parentteacher has had its impact on the holistic learning of the students. Active involvement of the parents in the PTA, framing of activities, organising events and functions has nurtured a compassionate attitude towards teaching and learning.
The effective use of technology in education has changed the face of education and created more educational opportunities for teachers and students. Use of online activities, educational games, high-tech lessons and collaborative learning sessions with the children of the world has brought out a global perspective amongst our students.

School Perspective
Seth M R Jaipuria Schools— Nation Building with Quality Education With a rapidly transforming education sector across the globe, Seth M R Jaipuria Schools focuses on nurturing global leaders by imparting quality education to its students, says Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman, Seth M R Jaipuria Schools and Jaipuria Institute of Management, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). What practices are followed at the school to develop leadership qualities among students? Leadership can’t be taught in a traditional classroom setting. It is developed through practice. From a primary level, the school should make students participate and take responsibility both within and outside the classroom to inculcate such qualities.
In what ways Seth M R Jaipuria reaches out and connects with its neighbourhood ? Understanding the community around us is an integral part of a good education. We have multiple programmes and opportunities through which our school and college students reach out to the community around them. These include community services, group projects, and cultural activities.
What are teachers’ expectations and how does the school help them work towards achieving the organisation’s vision? We have a strong belief that teachers’ development and learning pave the way to succeed in any educational institution. We provide multiple training opportunities in the school and outside too for teachers on pedagogy, and subject knowledge. Moreover, we provide them with new teaching ideas for every topic in the syllabus through nearly 1,00,000 lesson plans developed by us.
What are the most required qualities needed to inculcate among students? The most important skill in today’s world is the self-learning ability. We try to inculcate self-learning in our students, and try to make them self-motivated from a very young age. In today’s world no success is possible without the ability to work with people as a team. This requires empathy and listening skills. It gives not only a pathway to success but also makes one a better human being, who understands and helps people around himself or herself.
What is the biggest challenge for country’s educational system? How it can be resolved? The greatest challenge is to improve access of quality education.

Shreevats Jaipuria
Vice Chairman, Seth M R Jaipuria Schools and Jaipuria Institute of Management
We need to build schools that invest in improving the skills of teachers, and enable students with the skills to be successful in today’s and tomorrow’s world. There are very institutions that are able to do this outside metropolitan cities. Moreover, though there are many world-class institutions both at the school and higher educational level but the average quality of institutions is very poor. We need to bridge this gap between a few great and mostly poor institutions.
As an educational institute, what kind of help Seth M R Jaipuria Schools expect from the Government of India to improve the status of education in the country? The Government should create a legal framework, which promotes investment in education and competition amongst schools. Schools should be forced to deliver better quality and affordability through market competition and transparency rather than regulation.

seminars and conferences in India and abroad. Infrastructure: Infrastructure of a B-School holds importance especially when it comes to providing various facilities to students for education and health purposes. The institute basically turns a second home for students as it helps them identify themselves, shape up their career and have the expert guidance to follow in professional life. This parameter refers to campus area, built-up area, how well kept the institute’s building is, laboratories, playgrounds, ITenabled classrooms, books and journals in the library, electronic databases, hostels, and pastoral care etc. Curriculum: Management education plays an essential role in today’s dynamic business environment because of the positive consequences associated with the curriculum and pedagogy practiced in B-Schools. For schools to be competitive, it is very important to consider how much balance is required in loading the curriculum with theories from the western world and those from the emerging world. Considering the above fact, digitalLEARNING in its B-schools ranking has considered the curriculum as an important parameter. Along with how updated is the curriculum with the best and latest global teaching-learning processes, it is also very important for B-schools to inculcate the skills which are satisfy the industry demands. Innovation in curriculum and in pedagogy is an important factor to keep the students ahead in future.
Be it any institute or B-School, the admission process involves entrance exam followed by various other processes. The examination process for admission to business courses is one of the toughest entrance exams in the country. To discern the best talent from the rest, these exams include written tests, group discussions and personal interviews before the most eligible student is finalised for a course. Under the parameter, the digitalLEARNING magazine has tried to find out how stringent the selection process of students to ensure merit of intake is. Tougher entrance process decides the enrollment of better quality of students. Moreover, under this parameter, we have also tried to find out that how diversified is the student intake of any institute. Faculty Profile: In an institute, it is very important to develop an environment for the growth of faculty members. The educational context created by faculty behaviours and attitudes has a dramatic effect on student learning and engagement. Institutions where faculty engage students in and out of the classroom and place a high priority on offering students an enriching educational experience. Under this parameter, we have tried to figure out that what measures have been undertaken by the institute to recruit experienced faculty and also for their training to keep them abreast with latest trends. It is also very important how faculties are encouraged to pursue research and participate in

Industry Interaction: Industry interaction is essential for ensuring that practice meets theory across all functional areas. It goes a long way in enhancing students’ inter-personal skills and making them industry-ready. Such interactions are not always limited to just case discussions or internships. Panels and summits may also be organised by institutes to bring together thinkers, experts and practitioners. It gives them an in-depth knowledge about what they can expect and how they have to groom themselves to achieve success. The parameter rates B-schools on the industry exposure that they provide its students through live projects, partnership with industries, industry visits of students, internships and guest lectures from industry experts like chairpersons, board of directors, managing directors, etc. Alumni Network: Today, alumni relations are an important part of an institution’s advancement activities for many reasons. Alumni generate invaluable word-of-mouth marketing in their social and professional networks. Alumni are great role models for current students and are often well placed to offer practical support to students as they start their careers. Under the parameter, digitalLEARNING magazine has tried to explore that how good is the alumni network of a B-school. Being an ambassador of the institute, how well they are connected with it and also how they are helping the institute to

boost its brand value at national and global level. Moreover, the better alumni network of an institute help it to develop greater legacy. Entrepreneurship: The supporting environment for start-ups in the country is encouraging. More students pursuing business courses to start their ventures instead of taking up steady jobs at any recognised organisation. B-schools are also nurturing an entrepreneurial environment by establishing entrepreneurship cells or incubation centres within the campus. These centres mentor students and support them financially to become a job creator. Seeking the importance of inculcating entrepreneurial behaviour among the students, B-schools are required to emphasise on it and make students understand the social benefits of entrepreneurship. In this regard digitalLEARNING also consider it as an important parameter that helps in job creation and economic growth in broader terms.

Foreign Collaboration: International collaborations simply means opening windows of exposure, training, and learning in a global environment. For students, it is a coveted opportunity offering the kind of exposure not possible within one’s country or city. Forming international university partnerships helps students in two key ways: For domestic students, it offers the opportunity to travel internationally via any programme. It also enables universities to better understand the culture of other nations, thereby facilitating their marketing success there. Moreover, pursuing higher education is the preparation it affords for life in the working world. In the globalised society we live in, international collaboration programmes help by providing students the ability to study, work and travel in an international capacity. Under this parameter, digitalLEARNING explored the steps taken by an institute to promote global outlook among faculty and students through exchange programmes. The parameter also considered the number of MoUs signed with globally renowned Business Schools to make students and faculties aware about the latest trend. Placements: Campus placement is a defining moment in the life of a student/graduate. It brings to students the opportunity to make practical application of their technical and employable soundness to the representatives of the corporate management of an industry. Ensuring a good placement holds huge significance for any student as it influences his or her career ahead. Placements can be considered as the most important parameter in ranking a B-school. Good placements become, in a way, a certificate of entire educational institute’s excellence in preparing actually employable students, equipped with the latest industry trends. This parameter involves the percentage of students of the graduating batch placed, average salary offer and type of companies visiting the campus for campus placement.

CONFERENCE REPORT
When Experts Brainstormed Rajasthan’s Educational Journey
Rajasthan, the State fast emerging as an education hub of the country, recently hosted the 2nd Higher Education & Human Resource Conclave Jaipur. Organised to promote an environment of innovations, employability and entrepreneurship across the country, the conclave witnessed many significant discussions such as on: “Ensuring Employability and Entrepreneurship through Technical Education”, and “Higher Education Leadership Programme (HELP): Our Initiatives for Educational Quality”. Inaugurated by Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar along with Rajasthan’s Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Sanskrit Education and Science & Technology Kiran Maheshwari, Uttarakhand Higher Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat, Manipur Education Minister Th Radheyshyam Singh, and AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabuddhe, it was a grand congregation of various other distinguished stakeholders of the world of education from every nook and corner of the country. Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister said, “In its endeavour to provide interest-free loans to 10 lakh students, the Government would increase the annual budget to Rs 2,200 crore in next three years.” Talking about the Government’s plan about digitisation of education, he said, over 15 lakh classrooms from standard nine to post-graduate levels would be digitalised under “Operation Digital Board”. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Minister Kiran Maheshwari listed the State’s various innovations and reforms in higher education in the last four and a half years. She shared: “81 new colleges were set up in the state and 75 others were provided funds to add to their infrastructure.” Also present was Manipur Minister T Radheshyam Singh who urged educationists participating in the conclave “to connect, engage and participate” in his State for upgrading its education system. “People believe the Northeast is limited to Assam and Guwahati, but it is much more beyond that,” he said. Uttarakhand Higher Education Minister Rawat stated: “Uttarakhand would organise ‘Gyankhumb’ – an important, two-day conclave on education, in Haridwar from November 3 to 5. The event will be inaugurated by the President Ram Nath Kovind.” AICTE Chairman Sahasrabuddhe attended the conclave as a special guest. Here is a bird’s view of the educational extravaganza held in Jaipur:

INAUGURAL ADDRESS
CONFERENCE REPORT
PRAKASH JAVADEKAR
Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India
There is a new vibrancy in the education landscape of Rajasthan. A number of path-breaking measures have been implemented across the length and breadth of the State – a number of which are IT-led innovations that have transformed the whole educational content delivery across Rajasthan State’s schools. In addition, reach of education to far-flung areas of the State has also been enhanced to a large extent. The State Government’s continued focus on building more smart classrooms, ICT enabled classrooms and smart labs is very well evident on the ground - a testimony of which we witnessed in the form of our video-conferencing activity with 44 smart classrooms. I also applaud the work of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) being done across the State in line with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision to provide not only “Sabko Shiksha (education to all)”, but also “Achchi Shiksha (quality education)” and we are working in this direction only. Also important is the progress achieved so far under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of Government of India. It is aimed to improve quality of technical education system in the country. Today, training of teachers as per the new changing dimensions in education and keeping them abreast with the latest methodologies and teaching paradigms is also much needed to groom our students as future leaders. Therefore, it remains our priority. Also, there is a need for making teaching interesting and more engaging for our students.

INAUGURAL ADDRESS
KIRAN MAHESHWARI
Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Sanskrit Education and Science & Technology, Government of Rajasthan
Today, across the State, there is an increased focus on harnessing a holistic educational ecosystem, characterised by a culture of promoting industry-academia connect by employing best practices and innovations, and furthering participation of all education stakeholders to enhance synergies across the domain. Rajasthan government has been the frontrunner in all policies being implemented by the central government. A total of 62 new colleges have been started in last year in Rajasthan and many more in the offing. Efforts have been made to initiate Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Programmes for students to optimise their placement and career-oriented opportunities. Without RUSA’ assistance, we could not have improved the quality of our infrastructure in Higher Education. In RUSA’s first phase, Rs 352 crore have been allotted to Rajasthan, of which Rs two crore have been given to 100 colleges each for improving their infrastructure. In all, 18 parameters have been taken into account for this exercise. And this way, we have managed to turn around the image of many government colleges across the State. Through this two-day educational Conclave, we aim to create an effective knowledge-sharing platform for thought leaders, edu-experts and industry stalwarts belonging to the education space. These officials would deliberate on the nuances relating to existing and emerging issues in the higher education paradigm of the State, best industry practices, and ways to enhance the overall efficiency of the higher education ecosystem of the State of Rajasthan.

Dr Th Radheyshyam Singh
Minister of Education, Government of Manipur
CONFERENCE REPORT
Education is in an ever-evolving paradigm. Addressing challenges on a routine basis, finding their solutions and implementing innovative ideas to improve the educational landscape of Manipur, remain my key priority. Manipur is a small State with a great diversity and I am here in this conclave to follow the very slogan of this event -- connect, engage and participate. I invite all the edustakeholders here, including the industry and private players to come and visit Manipur and explore many win-wins in the educational space that my State offers.
Dr Dhan Singh Rawat
Minister of Higher Education, Government of Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand received Rs 150 crore under RUSA and we are very thankful to Shri Prakash Javadekar for this. Under his guidance, the whole landscape of the education has now been given a radical transformation. Further, under the visionary leadership of HRD Minister, we are organising Vigyan Kumbh in Uttarakhand on 3-5th November, 2018. A large number of VCs, directors of NITs, IITs and more than 20,000 edu-leaders are being invited for this mega event and for the same. I am hopeful that I would be able to pick useful takeaways from this summit.

DR SUBODH AGARWAL CONFERENCE REPORT
Additional Chief Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, Government of Rajasthan
The Government of Rajasthan is taking various initiatives for the benefit of students in the State. Nowadays, the Government is focusing more on equipping students with vocational and entrepreneurial skills. These skills will make our students job-ready for the corporate sector and the industries of their respective streams. In order to make the skill-based learning more effective, the Government has encouraged strengthening the vocational education at college-level. In their efforts, the respective departments of Government are trying to attract more students to skill-based courses at polytechnics through aggressive marketing and appropriate counselling. On similar lines, curriculum revision has been done for universities to make their regular courses more flexible.
Ashutosh A T Pednekar
Secretary Higher Education & Commissioner College Education, Government of Rajasthan
To create synergy among students, corporate, government researchers and various other educational stakeholders, a number of initiatives are being implemented. Various best practices, at par with global standards, are also being followed upon at institutions across the length and breadth of the State. These new measures would certainly help students on the path of excellence. The Rajasthan Government’s Dishari educational mobile app contains a rich collection of educational videos, ranks and leaderboard, online live tests news, and updates is being downloaded by more than 1,000 people daily. This is a testimony of our efforts in this direction. Further, bottlenecks concerning faculty, infrastructure and human resources are also now being proactively taken care of.

Quality and excellence are the two important guiding forces in today’s educational space. Without them, no institute can survive. AICTE has taken many important efforts to spread best practices among colleges and universities. Further, I believe, we need to add those subjects in our curriculum that are relevant today such as IoT, robotics, data mining and analytics etc. Along with promoting knowledge, training of faculties is also one aspect that is very crucial and we are taking various efforts for this cause. We are also launching, country’s first ATAL Academy in Jaipur that will further enhance the educational landscape of the State.

Panel Discussion: Ensuring Employability and Entrepreneurship through Technical Education CONFERENCE REPORT
Pushpa Satyani
Joint Secretary Technical Education, Government of Rajasthan
One of the issues that come up whenever we interact with technical educational institutes is that the admission rate is slowing down and many engineering colleges and technical institutions are closing down. The major reason for this is employability. There are three pillars -- education, employment and employability -- and there is some mismatch among the three. The fourth pillar is entrepreneurship. If there is a balance among the first three pillars then the fourth pillar, for which we are striving hard through ‘Make in India’, ‘Startup India’, etc, can be strengthened further.
Panelists: Pushpa Satyani, Joint Secretary Technical Education, Government of Rajasthan, Dr Saroj Kumar, Special Secretary, Technical Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Surja Raam Meel , Chairman, Swami Keshwanand Institute of technology, jaipur Dr P K Jain, Director, Geetanjali Institute of Technology & Science, Dr Vinay Kumar Chandna, Principal, JECRC Foundation, Dr Arun Arya, Director, Arya College of Engineering & IT, Dr Puja Agarwal, Vice President, Arya Group of Colleges, Jaipur, Dr Praveen Agarwal, Vice principal, Anand International Engineering College, Abhishake Nandan, Consultant, Kalam- Centre for Innovation and Incubation of startup (K-CIIS), Uttar Pradesh, Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, Director, NIMS University

INDUSTRY PRESENTATION Shantanu Mishra
Marketing Manager, South Asia, Turnitin
CONFERENCE REPORT
Today, everybody is serious about plagiarism. We have to take a step back and try to learn how western countries have evolved in this space. There was a thesis scandal at the Harvard Business School recently and along with that many other similar cases have now been reported. Plagiarism is also rampant in domestic news. A study from the Harvard Business School clearly indicates that if there is an act of plagiarism at a very significant level and that particular issue gets 9-10 press coverage, it impacts the intake of that particular institution by 10 percent. There are too many models or frameworks that we can talk about to counter plagiarism. That’s why the National Council for Economic Integrity (NCEI) has come up with 10 principles in this regard.

At AU Small Finance Bank, there are many industry-firsts measures that we have implemented. Some of them include: Being the only bank in the country to offer interest on savings accounts on a monthly basis rather than on a quarterly basis. We also offer interest rates as high as 6.75 percent, thereby offering a better yield to retail customers on his deposits. Further, we are the only bank that has extended not only its banking hours but its locker-operating hours too. Further, small changes such as doing away with the withdrawal and deposits slips have resulted in saving a lot of time for our customers and make our entire process paper- free. Most of the accounts opened last year were opened on tablets using the latest biometrics tools. This way, we have improved efficiency across our operations.
Special Address: Dr Arvind Agarwal President, Arya Group of Colleges, Jaipur
Engineers are the backbones of the nation and the backbone of the engineering education is the selffinancing engineering colleges. We are amidst the tsunami of private universities and IIT openings and we are struggling to survive ourselves. I am very sure 80 percent of the engineering education is being helped by the self-financing education sector. It will deliver to the nation and the nation would be obliged to continue with the selffinancing engineering colleges.

KUNWAR VIJAY SHAH MINISTER FOR SCHOOL EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT OF MADHYA PRADESH “A teacher can nurture thousand successful youths but thousand successful youths cannot nurture a teacher. To recognise the teachers’ contribution in the nation’s development, we call them as ‘Nation Builder’. Teachers’ contribution in development of a nation is beyond comparison. Education nurturing cultural values among students is beneficial otherwise it is worthless. It is necessary for students to know our Indian heritage and cultural values. Through various initiatives under the State education ministry, we are trying to inculcate patriotism among the students. It is necessary for every school to nurture cultured, and learned future leaders who can drive the country on growth path. In an important initiative, we have made it necessary for every school to conduct parentteachers meeting in every two or three months. It will help parents to know about their wards’ progress as well as the shortcomings and ways to improve them. In another initiative, we have tried to help students with poor grades. We ensured that teachers must help such students in improving their marks and also not to behave indifferent with them. Only a teacher can help poor students to improve and become successful in life ahead.”

hile struggling to make ends meet years ago, my mother, a single parent, once came across Visamo Kids Foundation (VKF). It provides free boarding and lodging for underprivileged children, ensuring their education in the finest English medium schools. Driven by curiosity she approached the VKF office, an NGO being run under the Kalorex Group. The group has a number of K-12 schools under its banner, and headed by a dynamic and passionate entrepreneur Dr Manjula Pooja Shroff. The visit changed our family’s life. It was surprising for my mother to learn how despite hailing from a royal family of Odisha, Dr Shroff had to face challenges to get higher education due to the parochial mindsets. Girls’ education was not a priority even amongst the Royals. The only reason that girls were given basic education was for them to be able to get married in a good household and raise their families. Our family had similar experiences even though in a totally different setting. Dr Shroff, who later evolved as an accomplished edupreneur, felt strongly about propagation of knowledge and education. She developed strong concerns for children, especially girls who were deprived of quality education. She wanted to provide this opportunity to all possible target groups. Personally, Dr Shroff would have almost missed out on higher education had it not been for her sheer determination to break away from the curbs of her Royal upbringing and pursued what she was passionate about. After completing her desired higher education, she decided on playing a larger role in this field, instead of confining herself to being a teacher. Having launched in 1996 the first Delhi Public School in Gujarat, today her Kalorex Group runs a range of K-12 schools and Pre–Schools in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
Dr Manjula Pooja Shroff MD & CEO, Kalorex Group
The Foster Home In 2003, Dr Shroff decided to give back to the society by opening this foster home where children or teenagers coming from underprivileged families could realise their potential by availing an opportunity to have quality education. In the same year that VKF was established and I was taken in as one of the first few students. Following initial formalities, I gained admission in Anand Niketan School, a well-known co-ed English medium school in Ahmedabad. My boarding and lodging were provided for by VKF and the school gave me free tuition. The 100-odd students staying in the foster home became my family and the teachers, volunteers and Gruhmata’s became my mentors, guides and caretakers.
Transformation of A Childhood My childhood memories turned bright after my experience in VKF. Like a Guardian angel Dr Shroff took personal interest in all the children living in VKF. She made sure that there was no compromise on the care and attention that was given to us.

The safe and secure environment of the VKF facility enhanced our learning and creativity and gave us many opportunities to showcase our skills and talents in various programmes and events organised for this charitable cause. I got an opportunity to meet successful people from all walks of life who donated towards the VKF cause and contributed to making our lives better. The fun birthdays celebrated in VKF which made everyone feel special, as all gifts were shared with all children. The outings and picnics organised through the VKF support group were much awaited events for all of us. The exposure developed immense confidence and communication skills in me and other children of VKF. The humble beginnings of all of us living in VKF created a unique bond between us. As I grew up, I too started to play a role of big sister and a mentor for my younger friends who kept joining VKF. Being of a creative disposition, I could hone my skills further in art and craft, sports and dance

through my school as well as during my evening classes in VKF through the volunteer teachers. It helped me win many State and district level competitions and tournaments in Kathak and Basketball. The best memories for me are of all of us children dancing in abandon to the lilting music of the Garba during every Navratri festival year after year with Dr Shroff joining us with total abandon and gaiety. I pursued my higher school and cleared it with flying colours in board exams for 10th and 12th class. My interest in Engineering inspired me to take up Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with English and Environmental studies in Grade 12. My dream to pursue Engineering as a professional qualification was realised when I completed the ASIC Design Engineering Programme and interned with eInfochips – which is a is a Technology Design Services & Solutions Multinational Company. have asked for anything better. My timid dreams had turned a reality. I had also nursed an aspiration to enter the Civil Services or UPSC exams. My brother and mother motivated me and firmly believed that I will be able to crack the exams. I put in two years to prepare for it, but unfortunately missed selection by a small margin. I do not wish my hard work gets wasted. I now wish to enter the Kaun Banega Crorepati contest and use that platform to show the world how my mentor and role model Dr Shroff and her VKF changed my destiny. It will also give me a feeling of satisfaction that the hard work put in for preparation for the UPSC exam has finally paid off.

Even after all these years of passing out of VKF, now happily married and independent, it now dawns on me how different my life would have been if one kind lady had not thought about children in my situation. Her own life experiences motivated her to give back to the society what may have been a lost opportunity for many. She has managed to turn around the lives of hundreds of children who didn’t even dare to dream of a life outside their slums and impoverished state. I have realised that the opportunity of education does not present itself to everyone. I understood now why Dr Shroff felt so passionately about education and did her best to provide it to whoever she could. Only a person who had a threat of being denied something much desired, could empathise with people in a similar situation. Every time I returned to my mother during my summer break I felt immense gratitude for Dr Shroff and her organisation. I saw so many children still dreaming of a better life and my childhood flashes before my eyes. I wish that good Samaritans like Dr Shroff would step up and ensure that no child gets left behind. She believes in being the change that you want in the world, and I am sure that others will take motivation from people like her to turn around the fate of young children and make their future promising. Dr Shroff always says: “Dare to dream, be passionate about whatever you want and give it your best shot”. Today, it holds so true for me. TIHS: WE PREPARE FUTURE-READY
ASSERTIVE CITIZENS: ARCHANA NARAIN SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE
At The Indian Heights School (TIHS), students are encouraged to develop creative and logical thinking so that they can set high standards to achieve success in life, says Archana Narain, Principal, The Indian Heights School, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN).
How does The Indian Heights School encourage its students for creative and logical thinking? The school conducts numerous student-oriented activities that foster creative and ethical thinking. Value-based education and awakened citizen programmes explore students’ unique capabilities and develop rational thinking among them. The concept of developing the right attitude, an aptitude, skill and knowledge-ASK-in every subject and activity further nurtures the problem solving skill amongst learners.
What are the latest assessment practices followed at the Indian Heights School to evaluate the learning outcomes of the students? The students are assessed on the basis of activities conducted with specific learning objectives. Students’ response is not limited to the standard set of questions and answers. For every activity, students are given options to choose the topic of their interest and work accordingly. For every event, festival or competition in the school, innate talents of the learners are highlighted. Facilitators sit with the subject team and grade the learners accordingly. Moreover, the learners are assessed on their best performance in any two or three activities and their best score is taken into consideration.
How does the curriculum at the school help students to be the globally competitive citizens? The students constantly participate in events that are developed with the objective of empowering the learners to become globally competent citizens. The students participate in many international competitions like Spellathon, Movie Review, Story Writing, World Scholar Cup to name a few. Field trips to overseas and NASA further provide them a rich experience. The school has won the International School Award (ISA) for three times in a row.

and
The school nurtures the qualities of leadership, confidence, team work at the grass root level. The elections to the Students’ Council for example, both at the Primary and Secondary levels are based on fair play-just as it is conducted in a Parliamentary election. The entire election process starts right from filing nominations, campaigning and exercising the right to vote. The students are exposed to hands on activities, and experiential learning, throughout the year. They are encouraged to work on the layout plan, share with peers and finally execute as a group. ‘Peer Educator’ group members in the school constantly visit the classrooms and sensitise the students on upcoming events and current alarming issues. Therefore, theme-based weeks like, ‘Joy of Giving’, ‘Health Our Principle Asset’, Magnificence of Manpower’, ’Be a Green Saviour’, ‘Salute to the nation week’, ‘Technophile week’ and ‘Road Safety Week’ etc along with trips and tours are followed in the school.
What is the vision and mission of the school?? The Mission of The Indian Heights School is to empower students to become confident leaders and trendsetters, who are creative, articulate and lifelong learners. The Vision of the school is to nurture students, who are competent, conscientious and compassionate individuals.

Tata ClassEdge: Paving Way for Sustainable Education System Industry perspective
Tata ClassEdge constantly innovates in pedagogy, technology and content aimed at enhancing learning experiences. More than 1,300 schools and 70,000 teachers across India have already adopted the Tata ClassEdge way of teaching, says Milind Shahane, CEO, Tata ClassEdge, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). How do the solutions developed by Tata ClassEdge help the education sector to identify and resolve various challenges? Our core product, ClassEdge Lx, is based on our own proprietary instructional framework called Multiple Learning Experiences (MLEx), which recommends a variety of activities, both digital and offline, to cement understanding as well as to improve creative and critical thinking among students. It may be worth recalling that schools vary not just in terms of affiliation to boards, but also in terms of the textbooks prescribed. In order to make this solution as user friendly as possible for teachers, we map our digital assets to the textbooks followed in each school.
To provide end-to-end support for schools’ academic and administrative needs, what are the various products developed by Tata classedge? Tata ClassEdge LX – To facilitate teaching and learning in classrooms, using videos, animations, games, interactivities, simulations, quizzes, and worksheets along with teaching ideas to conduct hands-on activities and projects PlanEdge – To facilitate academic planning activities in school, from timetables to term planning TestEdge – To help teachers print ready-to-use well-formatted question papers, adjusted for difficulty levels SchoolConnect - Understanding that it is difficult for parents to keep track of students’ education and that they may miss out important information, we created a mobile application for parent communication ‘School Connect’, which is available on Android as well as on iOS. Thinking About Values – A series of textbooks from classes 1 to 8 addressing the Values and life skills curriculum through a nonprescriptive, story-based methodology where children make ethical decisions given a specific context. Language Lab – A platform where comprehensive and interactive digital content catering to listening and speaking skills is put to use in a stimulating lab environment or audio-visual room After School – E-books for students with the ability to make notes, enhanced with Tata ClassEdge videos, animations, interactivities and worksheets. Teachers can use the platform to assign homework to students and view student progress.

Milind Shahane
CEO, Tata ClassEdge
Being the two most important stakeholders of education sector, how Tata ClassEdge help teachers in imparting effective and interactive learning and also students in enhanced understanding of concepts? Technology does not and should not drive education. Therefore, we need to separate the wheat from the chaff – that is, identify technologies that strengthen teaching-learning experiences and reject those that divert students’ attention from real learning. Schools cannot do without good teachers. Therefore, technology solutions targetted at schools should ensure that they are designed to improve teacher capability—not replace teachers with technology. Our solution has been designed primarily to support teachers to teach better, drawing more interaction and participation from their students.
What is the vision and mission of the company to support the India’s education system to be effective and sustainable? Our vision is to be the market leader in digital education and our mission is to improve the effectiveness of education systems through our high-impact digital learning products, solutions and services.
