he Government of India is all set to release the National Educational Policy (NEP) to address the changing dynamics of the population’s requirements with regards to quality education, innovation and research. The aim is to make India a knowledge superpower (Vishwa Guru) by equipping the students with the necessary skills and knowledge and to eliminate the shortage of manpower in science, technology, academics and industry. A committee headed by Dr K. Kasturirangan submitted the Draft National Education Policy to the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Minister of State for HRD, Shri Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre in May earlier this year. For this, the MHRD had initiated an unprecedented collaborative, multi-stakeholder, multi-pronged, bottom-up people-centric, inclusive and participatory consultation process. Since the government has invited suggestions from the education fraternity for the National, Elets Technomedia, the premier technology and media research organisation of Asia and the Middle East, in association with digitalLEARNING Magazine, presented an open platform – World Education Summit— for the educationists to put forward their ideas, views

especially at who the NEP is targeted at. India is such a diverse country; we have schools ranging from – socio-economic strata, demography, cultural differences, state-wide differences, language differences. It is difficult for one Education Policy to cater to the needs of all. I would have appreciated if the members on New Education Policy had someone on board who’s actually inside a school day in day out, somebody who knows how things work on the ground; rather than very eminent personalities who don’t have the experience of running the schools. Anirudh Gupta, CEO, DCM Group of Schools The government needs to be very careful while drafting the new education policy and must ponder if we are over-regulating the private school segment or taking the progressive step towards making the players contribute their heart and soul in the making of new India. There are some very interesting and important takeaways and thoughtful suggestions and policies which the government has formulated. However, there are certain aspects which, as a stakeholder, I believe will be counterproductive in the long run. The government needs to come up with a clear policy (whether they allow the schools to run for profit or not) and clear environment, as people are investing a lot of money in technology and innovative products at present. We need to have an environment where people are excited about doing quality work in education, energized to open new schools; thrilled to bring new technology. Reekrit Serai, Managing Director, Satluj Group of Schools Running a school nowadays is like running a jail, or even worse in some cases. It is very stressful in certain places and people in the management side would relate to it. Owing to the regulatory framework and, local bodies, most of our time goes in filling forms and taking NOC’s that our main motive ‘quality of education’ is not getting the desired education. World Education Summit is a great platform to talk about the issues related o running of schools, but how do we get out of it? Do we form a common voice? Do we talk about these things

here and then forget about it? Do we want to be regulated to a certain extent or do we want less regulation or do we want more even? We need to come to a point of consensus and we should leave this venue with some sort of action planning in mind Roshan Gandhi, Director of Strategy, City Montessori School The New Education Policy (NEP) would have implications on all schools, including CMS. Though it has certain things which are stepping in the right direction and when it comes to the overall regulatory framework, it does make one big step in the right direction. Because, previously the government used to provide the education, fund the education and regulate the education; which means there was no real accountability in the system. Now it has separated those functions, which hopefully will lead to a new level of accountability. The rest of the policy paints a great vision of what quality education can look like. But the question is how relevant it is going to be for the majority of schools on the ground level. One academic put it as – “Rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic” – which means the ship is already sinking but they are making changes on the surface level because, it fails to address and underline the structural issues, which are faced by the education sector, today. A good policy would be the one which opens a regulatory framework to help private schools flourish, and that’s a missed opportunity in the current NEP. Besides, theoretically we talk about ‘one nation, one policy’ but is it practically possible to implement it in a country such as India, which changes in every 50-100 kilometres? We need to come together as educationists in the true sense and exchange ideas, thoughts and processes. Dr S K Rathor, Chairman & Managing Director, Sanfort Group of Schools In Delhi/NCR, we are facing a lot of problems with the regulatory framework. The departments are not in sync which is making the case even more difficult for us. Moreover, with the population explosion, there is no space left with the government to allot for the opening of new preschools. In my opinion, the central government should intervene and direct all the state governments to frame policies regarding the opening of preschools, because it is the need of the hour. We all have nuclear families today, which make the presence of preschools even more important. Talking about the K12 sector, it comes with another set of policy hindrances. We cannot increase the fees every year but the expenses are rising; plus there are certain obligations that we need to fulfil when it comes to giving admissions to children of eminent personalities. We should collectively raise or voices so that it reaches to the Government of India and necessary actions. we are excited and happy to implement at ground level. But if we will not raise our voices when it is heard; we will never get what we want. Government is asking for suggestions regarding the new education policy but the no-participation from schools has forced them to extend the deadline. It has happened twice. 1.5 million Schools exist in India but only 68000 recommendations have reached to the drafting committee so far. We need to talk, participate and make our opinion count. The new education policy is very good in terms of futuristic thinking, adapting things from across the world but it’s only a general framework. It is like saying “choose any colour car as long as it is black”. Liberty should be given to schools to choose their board and make them participate in the process of progress.

Having 630 schools across India with 30,000 children, we have been facing a lot of hindrances with the policy frameworks. Different states in India are following different policies, which makes it difficult to function. However, in the last 2-3 years, early childhood education has received due attention. Early Childhood Association (ECA) has got one of the world’s best curriculums designed by NCERT, which led us to follow that. But when we talk about a basic policy for early childhood education, it should be the same across India, no matter, if we talk about curriculum framework or safety framework. NEP should focus on the quality of education and the basic rules & regulations but it should not make the functioning of preschools so hard that people refrain from investing time & money in the segment. Bangalore is the only city in the country to develop a model which has some set norms when it comes running and operations of preschools.
K Dilip, Principal, CMCL School, Lumshnong, Meghalaya There are certain aspects in the Draft New Education Policy which should be reconsidered. I have three observations, 1. Define the nomenclature for public and private: the definition given in the policy is very tricky as of now, 2. Clarity on language policy: the current NEP doesn’t specify the number of additional languages requisite for higher secondary and senior secondary. 3. Formalising of pre-primary: Children should be developed first and should learn naturally by playing and enjoying, the formal education must start after 5-6 years of age. I congratulate all the educators, ministry and the government who have worked hard and dared to come up with the new education policy. for political debate and not a temple of learning. Secondly, I strongly recommend that there should be a separate school for Class Nursery to Class 2, considering their teaching-learning practices are different from the other classes. Plus it is not safe to keep a 3-year-old child with an 18-year-old grown up in today’s environment. Thirdly, I recommend the inclusion of vocational education in schools. It should be made mandatory especially for students who aren’t performing well in Class 10, allowing them to learn and earn. One thing that our curriculum lacks is that it is academically centred. In the new education policy, cocurricular and extracurricular activities have been emphasized and most importantly, they will not be treated separately but as part of the overall development of a child. The second good thing is the focus on teacher training program The government aims to make every child literate and educated but my concern is for the students who are studying just for the sake of it and can’t even write their names. So there must be a provision to make sure that the students can learn minimum skills and not just boast with the degrees in hand. Dr Pranavi Luthra, Principal, MRV International School, New Delhi The education that we are imparting today has no relevance when it comes to individual development, social development, or national development. We are failing as a nation to develop human resource. If learning was happy and joyful, students would have been happily coming to schools and not committing suicide. In this scenario, an absolute restructuring of education is required. The policies need to change and the consideration should be what outcome we are looking for and not what the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is. The SOP is already their basis on which school functions; but we need to go in the roots and figure out that in which way an individual can be transformed into a useful and purposeful citizen.

Surbhi Arora, Saint Bachanpuri International School, Chandigarh There is a big gap in our education system which is resulting in one student committing suicide every hour. As per the statistics, 75,000 students have committed suicide in the last few years, which is a staggering figure to ignore. Besides, we cannot ignore the fact that almost 2000 students have dropped out of IIT, the biggest institute of India, in the last two years. When we talk about new education policy we are not talking about – how to bridge that gap, how to educate our students towards career and how to develop education in them. Until and unless students are made aware of the career choices available, how they will be able to make a choice. At present they only know about six subjects which are taught in the class, however, these six subjects cannot determine a person’s career and scope in life.

But when the draft came out, all the apprehension was put to rest. It is a very forward-looking policy which is going to strengthen not only school education but higher education as well. The first interesting thing about NEP that I noticed was -Dr Kasturirangan, the Chairman, saying that Ministry of Higher Education should be renamed as Ministry of Education, this way the focus would be primarily on education. As with ‘higher education’- the focus will deviate to training HRs. Another interesting thing is that we are going to do away with the system of affiliations. And the focus will be on three kinds of institutions: teaching universities, research universities and degree awarding institutes. One is – how we are preparing the students to have the right skill set to face the future with confidence; Second is- how adept are the faculty in giving the effective teaching-learning process to students and making them industry ready, which is a challenging issue as far as engineering education is concerned. The components of NEP just highlighted in the draft that how we equip the teachers, how do we build the right skill sets to the students. We at Krishna institute have gone away with chalk and talk method and have only smart classrooms. We are following the peer learning concept with My Google; quizzes, assignments and assessment are all done online. In short, it’s blended learning with the flipped classroom model. We encourage MOOCS, mandatory internships to make students understand the requirements of the industry. the New Education Policy. It should set some short term and long term goals to make sure where we are heading and where we want to reach. With regards to education, we must follow the ASK model – first attitude/character building; then skill development and finally knowledge. Previously, it was KSA (Knowledge, Skill and Attitude) but nowadays the biggest problem is ‘attitude’. Rahul Noel Ambati, Academic Director, Vidya Degree College, Palamuru University, Telangana New Education Policy, at the beginning of higher education segment, mentions about ‘liberal arts’ which might present a solution to ease the stress & pressure being built inside the students. The Higher Education Institutions in India is majorly towards technical education, i.e., focusing on ‘STEM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). And then we start pressuring our students to adapt to the learning style. The NEP talks about introducing humanity subjects (like psychology, practising yoga) that will provide some relief to the students. With regards to overcoming the faculty problem in higher education, my suggestion is that we must invite experts from the industry in our institutions as teachers. It will not only ensure the availability of adequate faculty but also help students in understanding the industry perspective.

How to release the pressure of teachers and students: Being an institute with a spiritual background, we have included yoga in our curriculum. 2. Continuous Teacher Education: There should continuous teacher education field just like the medical field where doctors need to attend seminars, lectures and conferences. In the wake of new technologies and innovations coming up, there is an urgent need for a dedicated teacher education program that can help them upgrade their knowledge and enhance skill set.

The draft NEP emphasizes on quality and real-time research, something which is lacking as of now. But, if put into practice, India will undoubtedly stand ahead of other countries in this segment. Besides, the introduction of liberal arts in professional education is going to bring a big change in the way students are pursuing it at present. Studying an interesting and hobby-based subject will definitely make them productive in regular academic subjects.NEP talks more about autonomy and categorisation of the institutes, but it should bring more clarity on how to fix the syllabus or curriculum of higher education, especially higher education.

The academic world is becoming more convenient and personalized, all thanks to the numerous applications of AI for education. This has changed the way people learn since educational materials are becoming accessible to all through smart devices and computers. AI is also allowing the automation of administrative tasks, allowing institutions to minimise the time required to complete difficult tasks so that the educators can spend more time with students. Highlighting the essence of Artificial Intelligence in education, Yashendra Mishra, Regional Manager- North, Global Channel Resources said, “Artificial Intelligence in Education is the need

Changing the role of teachers Due to the new technological rage, there will always be a role for teachers in education, but what that role is and what it entails may change due to new technology in the form of intelligent computing systems. As already mentioned, AI taking over tasks like grading can help students improve learning, and may even be a substitute for real-world tutoring. Presently, it is becoming an emerging tool, helping students to ask questions and find information or could even potentially take the place of teachers for very basic course materials. In most cases, however, AI will shift the role of a teacher to that of a facilitator. Teachers will supplement AI lessons, assist students who are struggling, and provide human interaction and hands-on experiences

by teaching the students but also involving the parents so that there is a consistency between what is being taught at the school and at home as well. The teacher is not just to focus on reading and numeracy, but also to provide experiential learning. Quoting the curriculum ‘PEARL’ followed at Jain Cambridge, Sai Kumari said, “For an educator to execute a plan there has to be a robust curriculum. Our curriculum is child centric.” Demonstration of a certain concept in the form of a collaborative activity is a simple means of teaching yet it has been found that it has far more impact on the mind of the child. Teachers are able to think more outside of the box to involve the children and maximise the level of learning. Sharing a similar example, Mansi of Scottish Early Years delightfully narrated a story about how conducting a fire drill at their campus gave the right exposure to the children at the school towards disaster management which eventually helped a child and her family from an actual fire at their house a week later. She emphasised on not just delivering the curriculum, but making sure the child actually understood how ‘what is being taught’ is to be used. This is where Sunita Jain of Hello Kids added a very valuable point that we cannot expect for all the kids to learn in the same way the way we are teaching. An early childhood educator should be a felicitator, and flexible to apply, adapt and add on new ways of teaching. Especially as an early childhood educator, one has to give up the traditional ‘teacher’ role and abstain from controlling the outcome of the classroom. Sharing a similar thought, Preeti Kwatra of Early Childhood Association mentioned that at our schools, we as educators focus on positive reinforcement. She insisted on paying attention on the positives to kill the negatives automatically. Most of the children in such early years are dying for attention. Therefore, looking at negative tantrums of a child gives incentive to other children in the class and promotes a domino effect of negative behaviour. She also stressed enough on giving the child the opportunity to explore, “Instead of letting the cat out of the bag immediately, let the child figure out the process,” she added. Infusing the energy of a preschool teacher, Manjit Legha of Little Millenium Preschool replicated a fun storytelling act to depict how teachers at her school think outside the box right in the moment using rhymes and fun activities. “We have coined ‘Teachers Excellence Awards’ to keep the preschools teachers motivated, and also have carved a series of joyful parenting sessions for the parents to encourage them to enjoy their child.” she said. Sneha Rathor of Sanfort also mentioned that at Sanfort, for the past two years, they have been conducting orientation programs for parents to explain that helicopter parenting hampers the overall development of the child. On a concluding note, the framework of early childhood education in India still has a lot of ground to be covered as major challenges stand ahead of it. First foremost the aim is to provide education to all of the nation’s young future of our country especially the disadvantaged stratum of the society. Second on the list is to give the early childhood educators an elevated status with proper remuneration and teacher training facilities. Early childhood education programmes set in the right context can change the future social and economic development trajectory of the nation.

We need to relabel things as to what is safe and unsafe. The experiences that a child goes through in his or her early years contribute a lot in their overall development – emotionally, physically, psychologically, socially and these experiences are a precursor to developing the right attitude towards teachers in the later grades and schooling in the later years. Satnam Sandhu, Founder and Director, Fun Rangers Preschools had a very interesting take on the subject. He referred to the preschoolers as the young future of the country. Quite beautifully, he described, “What we get is a body, very soft & tender, a mind so innocent, and a soul so pure. We need to build them. We need to guide them to a future.” he said. There are various studies in the early childhood education ecosystem that found that engagement of the child in activities that stimulated his mind around the age of four increased the development of their cognitive abilities at a faster and healthier pace. Mansi Aggarwal, Director, Scottish Early Years was also of the view that stimulation of the intelligence of the child certainly increases the chances of the child to learn how to survive, develop EQ, and understand for themselves what is safe and not safe. In contemporary India, where our children are raised in nuclear families, or single parent families, they get very less time to spend with their parents. On the other hand, children residing with grandparents learn a lot through various stories. They talk about values, safety, sharing and caring. Sharing her concern on the similar lines, Sai Kumari, Principal, Jain Cambridge School, Hyderabad said, “Absence of joint family structure brings a lot more responsibility on the early childhood educators to train the children while they are at the school.”

What is the vision and mission for the future? We are planning to set-up approx. 15 new centers till the end of financial year 2019-20 for achieving our 1st-year target of 20+ centers. We are planning to divide our targets, like, COCO model preschools in Vadodara, India- 1 new centre; FOFO Model Centres in India-7 centres and FOFO Model Centres in Nepal-7 centres.

Play based activities increase flexibility and improves potential for learning in later life. Keeping this in mind, we have focused our curriculum on holistic education by including yoga, value education, different dance forms, singing, instruments like keyboard and tabla, self defense activities, musical bands etc. It is a matter of pride that Little Wings have the youngest band troop of Jharkhand and has performed in the presence of Hon’ble Governor and Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Engaging in several activities help in building their leadership qualities during any school programmes.
What are the initiatives taken at Little Wings that make you one of the best preschools in Ranchi? It is very important for us to provide a healthy, happy and relaxed atmosphere for the children. Making the classrooms environment friendly for the students, providing training to teachers are some of our initiatives. Keeping the safety in mind, we implemented some features like CCTV cameras, well equipped GPS tracking for the vehicles, etc. Students take part in the activities like to fulfill social accountability too by visiting orphanage, distributing, fruits and sweets and spending time among them, distributing clothes to the poor, plantation drives, etc.

That particular policy is having a hugely damaging effect on providers too of course but we know that we win the argument by making the case for children, something which was clearly missing when the government first developed its policy.

Tell us about the journey of the Early Years Alliance. Our journey started as ‘Preschool Playgroups Association’ in 1961, where a young London mother, Belle Tutaev had set up a preschool in the absence of a state nursery place for her young daughter. The response was overwhelming with many parents following the similar footsteps. Within a year, Belle and other parents had rallied 150 members together and organised the first Annual General Meeting of the Pre-school Playgroups Association, today known as the Early Years Alliance. In May 1963, the Alliance gained official charity status and has championed the voice of the early years sector ever since. Today, we are a national education charity and the largest early years membership organisation in England, representing the interests of 14,000 Alliance members who deliver care and learning to over 800,000 families every year,

This is a hugely challenging time for the early years sector in England. We’ve seen around 9,000 providers close in the last few years due to underfunding. There’s currently a £662 million shortfall in the funding providers receive for delivering the government’s funded hours. It clearly had an impact on the training and personal development opportunities available to the workforce, and our providers are struggling to recruit and retain staff. Despite the challenges we face, we’re delivering some of the best childcare in the world. We’re supporting the sector in their professional development by providing free online education courses with Alliance membership.
Highlight the Teacher training programme that your brand holds onto? The Alliance has a comprehensive training programme supporting Level 2 and 3 qualifications, as well as, specialist themed courses. Our online training has been a huge success and it’s available free as part of membership and that every single employee of a member group can access over 20 courses. Courses range from safeguarding to early years nutrition and to date, we have delivered over 250,000 courses. In an ever changing sector, we are constantly expanding and updating our portfolio of training.
What is the driving force behind this evergrowing organisation?
Are there any plans for establishing roots in India?
Good early years policy should always put children first but sometimes they are forgotten. We campaign not only to change that but also make sure our members are supported, through books and training resources. What takes up most of our energy as a campaigning organisation, is the concern that some children have no access
Last year, I was appointed to the Department for International Trade’s Education Advisory Board representing the early years sector in the UK. We do have a small number of members based in India but are always keen to talk to international providers about the work we do. Usually, this is by way of speaking at conferences or international events.

The Indian Preschool Industry has a huge scope for private players as market size of pre-school segment was valued Rs.13cr in FY 2017 and is expected to grow with a CAGR of over 31% over the next three years. Currently it is contributing 32 billion USD to country’s GDP. Sanfort aims to reach a number of 500+ branches by 2021. The brand is adding 12-15 branches every month. Sanfort plans to open 5 more company-owned K12 schools in India as well as in neighboring countries and we also plan to venture into corporate day cares. The Methodology “India’s Top Preschool Ranking 2019” is divided into two categories -- Standalone Preschool Ranking and Franchise Preschool Ranking. The rankings to different preschools have been allotted on the basis of various parameters listed below under the aforementioned categories. In this perception-based ranking, standalone preschools have been covered in five zones -- North, South, East, West and Central, whereas franchise preschools have been covered from various cities of the country. Ranking top preschools of India is one of the most challenging tasks, given the large size of the educational ecosystem. To start with, the ranking questionnaires were sent to over 1,500 preschools across the country. The response on this ranking activity was overwhelming, with over 1,200 schools replying to our queries.
Methodology for Preschool Ranking Parameters for Standalone Preschool Ranking: Standalone category includes the preschools which do not sell their franchise. These are self owned centres managed by a single company, committee or trust. The location can be in any part of the city or across different cities of the country. collaborate to rethink and figure out a variety of emerging opportunities in the education landscape at present and in future.
Besides, the World Education Summit, Delhi, also witnessed an impressive congregation and participation from the Indian education sector as well. Key decision-makers including education ministers, top government officials, college/ university directors and vice-chancellors, school owners and principals leveraged the platform to analyse, understand, and share their vision and modern-day practices to bring improvement in the education landscape. The first day of the summit was inaugurated by Thokchom Radheshyam, Hon’ble Minister for Education Labour and Employment, Government of Manipur in the presence of other eminent dignitaries. On this occasion, the special edition of digitalLEARNING magazine – ‘Game Changers in Education’ was also launched. Bhanwar Singh Bhati, Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education, Government of Rajasthan and Temjen Imna Along, Hon’ble Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Nagaland performed the lamp lighting ceremony to commence the second day of the summit. All the three ministers are responsible for transformation of their respective state-wide spectrum of education sector spanning early learning, school, higher education, and skill and vocational training institutes. Government of Uttarakhand; Government of Manipur; Government of Nagaland, Government of Telangana, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE); Gujarat Skill Development Mission; Assam Higher Secondary Education Council; Board of Secondary Education Manipur; Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB); and Atal Innovation Mission were among the Government Supporting Partners. The summit witnessed the congregration of a galaxy of edu-leaders from different parts of the world, deliberating upon the latest policies, innovations, practices, strategies and challenges of the global educational landscape.

The two-day conference had two parallel sections: School Education and Higher Education. The school education section witnessed various brainstorming sessions including: Draft New Education Policy; Need of Innovation to Impart Quality School Education; Incremental Innovation in Education; Physical and Mental Well Being of Teachers and Students; Vocational and Skill Development; Role of Early Childhood Educators; Future Paradigms of Learning in Globally Acclaimed Schools; Emerging Content Delivery Mechanisms and much more. Similarly, the Higher Education section witnessed sessions on Scope of Automation in Enrolment; Importance of PPP model; Nurturing Industry-ready Workforce; Role of Assessment, Accreditation, Evaluation and Quality; Importance of MOOCs, Distance Education, E-Learning, and Blended Learning; Importance of Global Collaborations; Creating a Framework for Developing a Research-ready Institution and many more. During the summit, two government roundtables were also organised. Day 1 witnessed the roundtable with Government of Manipur and Government of India officials. On Day 2, it was with Government of Rajasthan and Government of Nagaland along with key government officials from both the states. Bhanwar Singh Bhati Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education, Government of Rajasthan We need to impart education which can provide employment opportunities to students in the future. The recent budget of Rajasthan presented by CM Ashok Singh Gehlot was dedicated to education, especially Higher Education. To promote education in the State, the government has opened 45 new colleges and now we can boast that not a single subdivision in the state is without a college. We have also opened 10 “Balika Mahavidyalaya� to boost girl education in the state. Besides, the Government of Rajasthan is also focusing on enhancing the agriculture scenario in the state; helping the farmers in yielding better crops in less expenditure. India, being an agricultural-economy, there is an urgent need to introducing new universities, new curriculum, technologies and innovations. In this budget, we have announced 5 new agriculture colleges in the state that already boasts of 18 universities in government sector, 10 deemed universities and 51 private universities.

The North-Eastern part of the country is also an integral part of India. Unlike before, the state of insurgency is long gone from north-east and there is no law and order problem anymore. I request the education fraternity to come and do some hand-holding, mentoring and investment and let us develop north-east like the rest of the country. Talking about the education system today, we, as teachers and parents have stopped listening to our children. It has become a one way traffic system. We are not been able to make our children innovative and creative. Technology cannot replace teachers but technology in hands of great teachers can transform the world. The purpose of education should be to ignite and to make students curious.
It is very rare to even comprehend the trajectory at which our country India is growing today. The growth of the country is always much dependent on the education level of the countrymen. Today, we are thinking about Quantum Physics, Artificial Intelligence, and all other advanced technologies but we as a nation should also ensure that all these programms are made accessible, affordable understandable and broken down to the most basic places of this country. I urge the ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource and Development and AICTE to ponder upon while making policies towards the North-east, the region which is facing a quantum problem of geography and needs. The policy drafted for north-east should be separate from the policy of mainland India, because it is unfair to compare the institutions in Delhi, Chennai, Rajasthan or Punjab with the handful we have, somehow, in the north-east region.

What we are learning is getting obsolete by the time we master it because changes are happening so fast. We have brought up the Gurukul system, where the students went and lived with the teachers. With the advent of Britishers, the industrial revolution happened and we followed the assembly line system and made boxes called – classrooms, where teachers came, taught the lesson and went back home. Then the culture of home tuitions came, where teachers went to students home, and now with online teaching platforms neither teacher nor students need to know each other. Students don’t need knowledge today, but they need to have the ability, the skills to survive in the world which is changing so fast.
I took over as BSEB Chairman few years ago when the infamous topper scam took place. Though, it was one of the turning points because that brought to knowledge some of the malpractices existing in the state examination board. It led to identification and initiation of so many reforms that helped in transforming BSEB- from being among the low performing boards to becoming the first board in the country to declare results this year. We did it in a record time of 28 days, despite conducting the examinations along with other state boards. It is a rare feat considering the huge volumes that we deal with - 17 lakh students appear for matriculation examination and 13 lakh appear for intermediate examination every year.

Technology seems to provide a very natural solution to many of our challenges and problems. In Telangana, we have empowered the students with mobile application integration – that allows them to download their certificates on mobile along with 15 other types of services. We have eliminated corruption, red tapism, extra expenditure, and provide the services in a time-bound manner. For this, we have been awarded the Order of Merit in SKOCH under smart governance category.
Education is the key factor that determines how a country is going to progress in the next 30-40-50 years. Rajasthan has 252 government colleges and additional 50 colleges have been declared by the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in this year’s budget, taking the figure to 300. These colleges have more than 4 lakh students, out of which 51% are girls and 49% are boys. Besides, we have 1600 private colleges, thanks to the liberal policy of the state that allows the private players to come up. In fact, we allow new colleges to come up even on a land which is not even converted by the appropriate local authority.

Navoadya Vidyalaya Samiti caters to the most disadvantaged section of the society, i.e. SC/ST/OBC, girls and poor talent living in remote areas of the country. At present, we have 3 lakh students living in different hostels in different parts of the country. There are around 1.25 lakh girl students, so it is a major challenge to maintain the campus with this kind of gender ratio. The admission is strictly on the basis of merit and for this we conduct the examination with the help of CBSE. Last year, around 31 lakh students of Class 5 registered and 22 Lakh appeared for the examination. Out of which 45,000 students were selected for admission.

In the context of Draft NEP, there are certain segments which are nicely covered but there are certain challenges as well, on which we need to voice over together for the holistic growth of education in this country. At present, we are conducting examinations for Class 10 and Class 12 of only 5-6 subjects but in draft NEP there are 24 compulsory subjects yearly marked. So, all school leaders, state boards representatives, education ministers, education stakeholders need to introspect whether we are able to face this challenge from 2020 or not. It’s high time to ponder upon, whether we can implement the NEP framework considering the current and the future scenario of education in country.
In the present education system, pedagogies are changing everyday but our ancient Gurukul system is still relevant today. But unfortunately, we ourselves have left behind our tradition and culture and thus can’t expect our children to possess those values. Talking about the Draft New Education Policy, this is the first time that Government is asking for suggestions. I request all the educationists to kindly share their ideas, suggestions and innovations for the better education system.

The Madrasah education system in West Bengal is similar to the regular school system, where we teach all the same subjects - English as the second language and Bengali/Urdu as the first language. We have physical science, life science, mathematics, geography, history; the only difference between a madrasa and a regular school is that we teach an extra subject, i.e, Arabic as a foreign language. We have 1300 madrasas under our directorate, mostly in Bengali medium and few in Urdu medium. Interestingly, 6570% of our students are girls with zero dropout-rate in the last 5 years. We have already introduced ICT and pedagogy plus we also have smart class system operational.
I have been attending Gita classes for a while and I chanced upon this discovery that the learning of the religious novel is similar to what we see in our present day bollywood movies. ‘Gita Ki Kahani – Bollywood ki Jubaani’ – is a novel and embarking experiment through which I want to showcase the world that both Gita and Bollywood are strangely interconnected. For example: Gita says our life is unmanifest in the beginning, manifests in the middle and again unmanifests in the end. Bollywood song ‘Ek dhundh se aana hai ek dhundh me jaana hai’ means exactly the same.

In most schools in India, one of the biggest challenges that we face today is the English language itself. We want children to be articulate and confident users of English not just for enhanced communication skill but we believe that English is extremely important for learning to take place. Having a smart board in the classroom is not necessarily technology. So, we are looking at how pedagogy can be used in an innovative manner. We use actions, objects, visuals, stories and also have a year-long module that can be implemented in schools to create a complete language immersion in English for children.

For that, we have a technology called ‘campus tracking’ wherein for example, if the child is spending more than 10 minutes in the washroom, the school administrator will get an alarm to check on the child. If we talk about safety or what we impart to students, we have smart classroom, smart campus, smart learning or smart process. In terms of classrooms, we have interactive display boards, interactive classroom computers, lecture recording and broadcast.
