2014 marks the 10th dld conference. it’s an anniversary that i am very proud of. dld started in 2005 as an intimate gathering of curious people from business, science, media and art, trying to find out how the internet will change our world. since then, it has grown into an interdisciplinary, internationally connected platform of thought leaders, disruptors, investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, and creative minds. from our home base in munich, we have built strong links into the innovation hubs around the world – tel Aviv, palo Alto, new York city, london, istanbul, moscow and rio. today, dld is a marketplace of ideas, thought patterns, business models, and seemingly unassociated topics that connects communities across countries and continents. dld is a network of friends and good businesses. Always one step ahead, dld has accompanied the dramatic paradigm shift in our world accelerated by digitally enhanced interconnectivity, disruptive technologies and globalization. A huge wave of advanced contextual technologies that understand and learn more about us than ever before is going to wash over us. dld enables us to understand these and their impact, to create opportunities and to be the smart protagonists in these changing times by initiating debates and asking questions. i invite you to be part of this community. discuss, learn and argue with us, make new friends and find new opportunities. exciting times are ahead of us.

DLD14 nigHt Traditionally, the DLD crowd met for a night of networking and dancing at Old Congress Hall. Some dared to take a bath in the colorful ball bath, while the rest danced their shoes off to the sounds of Israeli band Terry Poison and Swedish act Elliphant.

DLD14 cAMPus This year’s DLD Campus Fireside Chat featured WhatsApp’s CEO and Co-Founder Jan Koum and Stefan Winners, Member of the Executive Board, Hubert Burda Media. More than 450 students and young founders followed the invitation by DLD and Internet Business Cluster to Ludwig-Maximilian-University (LMU) Munich. The inspiring talk about the origin of WhatsApp and its development into a messaging application was followed by a Q&A session and a lively get-together in the historical LMU Lichthof.

UNPAINTED is Munich’s first-ever fair for digital and new media art in 2014. It offered a global platform to galleries, institutions and artists to showcase artistic practices which engage in technology. Works of art produced using new technologies are no longer on the fringes of our culture. Today, artists are constantly creating new worlds of experience, and they are increasingly taking up positions that reflect the digital age.

DLD 2013 eveNTS a G L a N C e F R O M T H e Pa S T Munich, July 15-16, 2013 DLD Chairwomen Maria Furtwängler-Burda, Steffi Czerny and Co-Chairwoman Arianna Huffington, Viviane Reding and Ursula von der Leyen invited the community to join the 4th edition of DLDwomen – the conference for global pacesetters, visionaries and leading entrepreneurs with a female perspective. Digitization and increased connectivity is rapidly changing our world. DLDwomen’s focus on these shifts in society made it an inspirational event with awesome guests, excellent networking, good times and summer vibes. DLDwomen13 was indeed ‘breaking new ground’ at Munich’s unique Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory with around 600 international participants.

Munich, January 20 - 22, 2013 DLD13 was all about ‘patterns that connect’. It focused on pattern recognition in communication networks, social behavior, algorithm-logic, neural networks, genetic codes, data streams and even addressed the very serendipity of connectivity. As a true connector of patterns, DLD serves as a platform for creating crossover conversation, enabling innovation and connecting the unexpected. Over 150 speakers and 1000 attendees gathered at DLD13, the most prestigious and innovative global leaders from the fields of digital and consumer markets, media, technology, design, science, entertainment, arts and culture.

Cocktail New York, April 29, 2013 Steffi Czerny, Paul-Bernhard Kallen and Yossi Vardi had the pleasure to get together with many New Yorker DLD friends on the packed cool rooftop of Black Ocean’s new headquarters in midtown. Overlooking the stunning skyscrapers of the city, they enjoyed some tasty cocktails and chatted with over 200 guests.

Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2013 The DLDcities roundtable series addresses the challenges and opportunities for cities in the areas of governance, architecture, design, citizen engagement and the power of technology. In 2013, DLD in cooperation with Siemens, brought together 100 thinkers and influencers in Rio de Janeiro. The discussions put an emphasis on how mega-events change the urban system, how ICT and smart systems can contribute to that, and addressed the questions of how to tap into specific local qualities – informal sector, culture, creativity – to enhance all facets of resilience. Speakers included Rio’s Mayor Eduardo Paes, Social Entrepreneuer Rodrigo Baggio, and Fernanda Camargo (LiveWright) among others. The roundtable was followed by dinner, drinks, and networking on this magical night out at the marvellous Santa Tereza Hotel.

London, September 3rd, 2013 Tel Aviv, October 15-16, 2013 Welcome to the startup-nation Israel! For the 3rd time, Israel’s largest international hi-tech gathering took place and featured hundreds of startups, VC’s, angel investors and leading multinationals. A German delegation of 150 people joined the two day conference at Tel Aviv’s historic site and new hot spot ‘The Station’ just off the beach near Jaffa, and is an essential part of the DLD Tel Aviv Festival. Tel Aviv is the ideal venue for this event, boasting top technological talent, the highest VC investments per capita and multinational centers for tech industry leaders.

After a great stop in Rio de Janeiro, the DLDcities roundtable series continued at ‘the Crystal’, Royal Victoria Dock. How do soft location factors interplay with the economic success of a city? The London roundtable investigated the nexus between livability, cultural activities offered and how a city can attract top talent. The discussion was embedded in a Salzburg Opera broadcast and a spectacular illumination of Siemens’ ‘the Crystal’, enjoyed by around 250 international DLD friends.

Palo Alto Brunch, October 4, 2013 Bavaria meets Silicon Valley - once again DLD hosted the traditional lunch at the MacArthur Park in Palo Alto. A typical DLD mix of about 200 tech experts, founders, and decision makers, gathered in the heart of Silicon Valley to discuss current trends and topics for the upcoming DLD14 conference with Steffi Czerny and Yossi Vardi.

Munich, November 20-21, 2013 DLD also serves as an innovation engine for Burda. So it brought together 550 colleagues from 19 countries and selected experts to talk about growth in a companyexclusive DLD event. Within 26 hours of intense networking, everyone shared experiences and ideas around topics critical to entrepreneurial success: measuring risks and learning from mistakes, startup culture and organization, advertising markets, consumer behavior and technologies.

Breakfast New York, December 6, 2013 Networking, networking, networking! DLD had the pleasure to get together with many of our friends at the AppNexus headquarters for this breakfast in New York. We caught up with over 200 guests from Silicon Alley and shared some news about the upcoming DLD14 conference in Munich.
