Welcome

Welcome 10 years of DLD and still “It’s only the beginning”. No matter how much we think the internet has disrupted our world so far, the real digital revolution hasn’t happened yet; it’s just starting to unfold. Digital connectivity is becoming omnipresent – just like electricity. Algorithms, sensors and data are making machines and applications smarter. New technologies, new products and new business models are being developed at an incredible speed. I believe that a new view on humanity in the face of data and transparency is also necessary. That’s what we explored at DLD15 with our usual set of intelligent, engaging, mindful, and disruptive speakers as well as our curios audience.

Steffi Czerny, DLD Co-Founder and CEO

The “Highlight-Tour” through the palace included a number of museums and beautiful halls – including the venue of this year’s DLD Chairmen’s Dinner.

Lenbachhaus Munich www.lenbachhaus.de Among the greatest artists of Munich of all time, most can be found at the Lenbachhaus. The expressionistic art of the Blue Rider avant-garde artists as well as the Joseph Beuys collection of object art “Human, All Too Human,” were on view at the Lenbachhaus as well as many more highlights of art history during DLD 15.

City-Tour through Munich Delving into Munich’s architectural past, the “Historic Town Walk” included the most beautiful places and buildings of Munich’s historical center, among others the St. Peter’s Church and the Viktualienmarkt.

Museum Brandhorst www.museum-brandhorst.de This art museum focuses on classical avant-garde artists such as Picasso and Schwitters, and postwar European Modernists among the likes of which include Beuys and Polk, but the main interest became increasingly drawn to American art, highlighting the works of artists like Twombly and Warhol. The unique compilation of varying styles of art was collected by Udo Brandhorst and his wife Anette from the 1970s onwards. 30

Chairmen’s & Speakers’ dinner

A night to remember! Distinguished guests of DLD15 came together for an exclusive dinner hosted by DLD chairmen Hubert Burda, Yossi Vardi and Paul-Bernhard Kallen at Munich Residenz, the historic palace of the Kings of Bavaria. The night was filled with familiar faces and DLD legends including Uber’s Travis Kalanick, famed VC Ben Horowitz, Arianna Huffington, Accel’s Joe Schoendorf, LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman and many others. DLD is all about connecting the unexpected, and there was nothing more unexpected than Ryan Leslie’s unbelievable hip hop performance causing an eruption of loud praise from the audience, followed by a pair of stunning opera singers from the Salzburg Festival, for which “Brava!” was the cheer of choice.

Impressions “It’s only the beginning!”

Although technology has made enormous strides in recent years, DLD15 demonstrated that the digital revolution is nowhere near finished. 1400 participants and over 160 speakers joined us to explore these groundbreaking developments and were put on the brink of experiencing the incredible potentials that new technologies have to shape our future. What will these new set of technologies and new set of business models be? Should we be scared? “Quite the contrary,” said DLD director Steffi Czerny, “I am convinced that these developments predominantly yield opportunities for innovation.” Opportunities for innovation were presented in many forms. Speakers such as Travis Kalanick, co-founder and CEO of Uber, discussed the possibilities of job creation that have now become feasible through the advances of technology. Additionally, Andrew McAfee from MIT talked about how the current state of automatisation is actually opening the door to a new humanism enhancing creativity.

It’s Only the Beginning: The Internet R.I.P. Mikko Hypponen, F-Secure Corporation

It’s Only the Beginning: The Fragility of the Internet Yobie Benjamin, Avegant

Security expert Mikko Hypponen warns about the monster we have created with our connected world.

Benjamin walks us through the birth of the Internet itself, the browser and the dot com boom, it's implosion, the social web, and big data.

It’s Only the Beginning: Communications in an Age of Lost Control Sean Garrett, The Pramana Collective

It’s Only the Beginning: Linda Boland Abraham, Comscore Nirav Tolia, Nextdoor Joe Schoendorf, Accel Partners Albert Wenger, Union Square Ventures

Sean Garrett looks at the ways to succeed at communicating including a focus on transparency, radical truth-telling, and mildly subversive techniques that run counter to the often self-perpetuating media/corporate news creation paradigm.

Linda: The landscape of Digital Media Measurement is changing, the audience is changing - but how does this change the monetization? Devices collecting measurements and data surround us, and Linda explains the challenge of finding what measurements are meaningful.

It’s Only the Beginning: Industry Overview Henry Blodget, Business Insider

Nirav: There are many American neighborhoods in which people don’t know the names of anyone they live next to. Tolia explains how Nextdoor is here to introduce you to your neighbors once again.

Henry Blodget asked his crystal ball about the future of digitalization and business.

Joe: Schoendorf argues that next big thing is building technology to replace labor, and walks us through our technological advances of the past, and how the future is being paved for this huge societal shift in our midst. Albert: Everyone is online, but for Wenger, the internet is not the answer. An impressive overview of why we really are just at the beginning of the developments that will change our ways of life. 68

Over 160 speakers from around the world shared their insights and innovations on the DLD stage. Both panel and keynote speakers alike acknowledged the great amount of progress humanity has made thus far, but challenged the audience to entertain the idea that this is just the beginning. In 2015 we are just starting to see the enormous potential of the digital world to change our future in ways that only DLD speakers can imagine. The following few pages take a closer look into a selection of exciting topics.

Future of Work

“F

rom the perspective of a business customer, and from the perspective of everyone who is using software at work (which will be every single person here), it’s a much better world. Software is much cheaper, it’s more powerful, it’s easier to use, it’s simpler to deploy and manage, and I think in every respect it’s better than it once was, with one exception. Nothing works well together.

“I

f you can’t communicate what the product is, what the service is, or what the business does in such a way that the person you’re telling it to can then go on and communicate it to someone else, it is very unlikely to be successful.

“T

here is a huge opportunity by giving this time back to people. Time is the only resource we can not replenish. We are given so much time and once it’s over we’re gone. We have to use that in a better way.

“W

e need a lot of new ideas, we need to deal with climate change, we need to deal with that we are getting older, and that our social systems are not really working anymore. We need to deal with a global world where you have immigration, and we also need to deal with the question of do we really need extremism and things like this. This is where we actually need people.

“P

eople frequently worry that online disconnects you more because even though you are quote on quote “connected online” you spend more time looking at your devices, less time interacting with people. Perhaps I am an optimist, because I actually think that where online ultimately heads to is facilitating more in person connection, I think that is actually where it will gravitate to.

“A

n employee signs up for this finite time, somewhere between two and five years, to have a transformative impact on the company, and a company signs up to having a transformative impact on my career; essentially trading lifetime employment for lifetime employability, and mutual investment.

“T

oday, a lot of people are in their hamster wheel. A lot of us go to their work in the morning, eight hours we work, work, work, work, work, with no purpose whatsoever, go home, and then they’re tired. There is no time left. What is going to happen is that people actually get their time back and rethink what they want to do with this time. And there is lots to do!

In flight we had mechanical problems, where to operate the propulsion system the engines that drive the spacecraft, we’re operating them in a different way. And all this is done by passion, by human beings themselves. There is nobody else who can do it; you cannot plan it in a computer.

We are trying to correct that at the Huffington Post by every year developing more and more resources, more and more journalists, into telling the good stories and treating it as seriously as we are covering the crisis, the beheadings, and the terrorism. DLD14 NYC Conference

DLD cities 14 SFO Conference

New York, April 30 – May 01, 2014

San Francisco, June 12, 2014

“WOW!” That was the reaction to our very-first DLD conference in New York City. Held in Frank Gehry’s design-oriented IAC building the event gathered a staggering number of 1000 people. From industry leaders to startups, guests came from Europe, Israel and the US. A Bavarian party that took place at The Standard High Line Hotel was the perfect addition to this wonderful event: The beer garden atmosphere showed the roots of DLD, and gave everyone the opportunity to casually network over a nice cold Bavarian beer. Prost!

What are the latest developments in the intersection of the digital revolution and urbanism? This is exactly what DLD spin-off DLDcities conferences aim to explore. The dynamic events’ latest edition was held in San Francisco at the Fort Mason Center overlooking the spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The event was sponsored by Siemens and gathered more than 40 speakers and over 200 guests. Topics included the evolution of software and its impact on infrastructure, the urban removal of the economy, civic engagement, creativity, social physics, Internet of Things and VCs. Amongst speakers were Alexander Pentland from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stefan Denig and Sven Scheuble from Siemens, The National Geographic’s star photographer Rick Smolan and many others.
