Dia de Los Muertos Skull Painting at

The Craftroom

Beer? Good. Therapy? Good. Beer Therapy? Hell yes. Albuquerque is arguably the place to be for exploring new breweries and locally crafted beer. Fortunately, there are many businesses that work in conjunction with these breweries to provide relaxing and fun activities—all while enjoying your favorite brew. This issue’s highlight for our beer therapy event is the Duke City Paints-n-Pints Dia de Los Muertos Skull painting that took place at The Craftroom. The ticket covered a free beer or cider, plastic skull and all of the materials needed to complete the project. There were several staff members available for assistance and guidance as we painted. A few of us at the table I was sitting at had to google some pictures to get a little inspiration going. Once we did, though, it was so much fun! Painting, creativity, laughing, music and good drink all made for a great beer therapy experience. I was able to take my creation home after it had been sprayed with a protective coatcontinued on next page

ing. The atmosphere was extremely positive and encouraging as we all admired everyone’s efforts. I’ve not ever considered myself a naturally skilled visual artist but I was happy with what I created. Even with a lack of personal knowledge about painting technique I was able to enjoy, relax and have fun at this event. As always, I found friendly people to enjoy a little moment of life with in this city. I left with a beautiful piece of art for my home, new confidence in my abilities and a definite desire to participate in another activity with this group. Please like the Facebook page for Duke City Paints-N-Pints, visit the website www.dukecitypaintsnpints.com or follow them on Instagram dukecitypnp. The Craftroom brewery can also be followed in Instagram at the_craftroom_nm as well as on Facebook. The website is www.thecraftroomnm.com.

S easonal Beer Review

Whiskey Ginger Ale 6.3% ABV 20 IBU

WHISKEY GINGER ALE

By Jerald Slamp

Brewery: Kaktus Brewing recent winter season brew

W

ith so many variables involved in the process of creating unique craft beers such as temperatures, cooling, varying lengths of time, types and amounts of ingredients, and varied combinations thereof. Brewers end up with pretty much an endless number of creative possibilities to produce a desired finish. This particular beer is a bourbon aged barrel beer involving a process of infusing the ingredients ginger and lime zest during the boil. Then instead of just cooling and aging it inside a bourbon barrel, it is placed into a wood barrel then aged with bourbon barrel chips added inside the beer for a period of six weeks. The finish here produced an enjoyable aroma with a mild hint of wood barrel, mixed with crisp malty citrus. This beer had a light to medium body and unique in that it is an American pale ale as opposed to the typical barrel aged styles known usually as stout or porters. This one is just not as roasty. With an ABV at 6.3 and IBU of 20, upon first taste, it reflected a non bitterness with a mellow whiskey and citrus finish, without a long lasting after taste. I found this beer quite refreshing and worthy of a revisit. KAKTUS BREWERY is located in Bernalillo near I-25 & US 550 Special thanks to Michael Waddy, BREWER

Meet the B artender Chantalle Hinojos

C

hantalle Hinojos is a bartender/manager at Lava Rock Brewing Company, which has been operating on Albuquer-

que’s west side for 2 years. Chantalle has been

with Lava Rock since its opening and loves her job there. An Albuquerque native, she started

in the industry with serving and hosting before beginning to bartend and manage. She has worked with other professionals at Lava Rock to fine-tune her knowledge and skills. Chantal-

le has spent a great deal of time observing and

learning about the process of brewing from the professionals in the establishment. She has discovered an enjoyment of trying new brews and

having recommendations ready for the people she serves. She has a personal favorite of the Ash Cloud Hazy IPA mixed with a cider.

When asked about what she enjoys the most

when working at Lava Rock, she states that

being with people and helping provide an en-

vironment that is relaxed and welcoming for the neighborhood is very fulfilling. Walking

around the brewery she speaks with the cus-

tomers, knows her regular patrons, and has a

working knowledge of the food and drink to

offer. When she is not at Lava Rock interacting with and serving her community, Chantalle

enjoys spending time with her daughter and going to the gym.

You can meet Chantalle and sample some fan-

tastic brews and Italian food from the M’Tucci’s restaurant located in the same building. There

are weekly and seasonal specials so make sure to check out their website at lavarockbrewpub.
